Oriens Aviation’s Growing Maintenance Arm Defies Pandemic This will mean that Oriens can take complete care of customers’ maintenance requirements, from the planning and oversight stages, to the completion, certification and records control. In addition, the company is set to become a fully-approved FAA repair station this year, enabling the company to carry out maintenance work more effectively on FAA registered aircraft.

Oriens Aviation, the British Isles Pilatus Centre, has gone from strength to strength since being established in 2015 at London’s Biggin Hill Airport, growing in 2018 when it opened a new facility at the airport. And in recent months, despite the aviation industry facing its biggest challenge for decades with the Covid-19 crisis, Oriens’ aircraft maintenance arm has forged ahead, ensuring continued support for its customers, security for the team and growth of the business. Speaking to GA Buyer recently, Oriens Aviation Maintenance General Manager, Stuart Locke, reflected on “more than 20 percent growth in maintenance activities in 2020,” and some key milestones. Perhaps the most newsworthy development came with Oriens’ move to expand its services to include Pilatus’s PC-24 “Super Versatile” jet. The first scheduled PC-24 maintenance is set to take place in February 2021 for a private client, said Locke, who added: “The PC-24 tooling order and the application with the CAA have been made.” In terms of work completed recently, Oriens undertook its second full 10-year PC-12 inspection this year, including the removal and refit of the wings for inspection, and it also completed some major avionics upgrades requiring significant wiring installations. Oriens now offers aircraft management services up to full CAMO control, all approved by the CAA/EASA.

Not surprisingly, recruitment has continued at Oriens Aviation adding more professionals to its growing team; two new team members have joined over the past two months (covering engineering and technical records) and the company has also expanded its workshops, for example bringing the maintenance of wheels in-house — previously it was outsourced.

Locke joined Oriens in 2018 from TAG Aviation at Farnborough, where he was Head of Maintenance, and was tasked with growing the Oriens Aviation maintenance activities. At TAG he was instrumental in doubling the maintenance business from 50,000 to 100,000 manhours per year, with an 80-strong workforce, all achieved within five years.

As well as the heavier work now being undertaken, Oriens’ maintenance services also cover routine scheduled maintenance, warranty work, unscheduled maintenance, AOG support and aircraft valeting. All in all, a one-stop-shop for business aircraft owners.

Biggin Hill – A Fantastic Location At the inauguration of Oriens Maintenance Services in February 2018, Oriens Aviation Founder and CEO, Edwin Brenninkmeyer, highlighted that his company — with its new facility — could build on its established aircraft sales activity. It has certainly taken significant steps towards this since, with AOC and pilot training advisory, MRO and warranty work. He reflected on the ideal location London Biggin Hill offered, being “the closest business aviation airport to London, with full IFR facilities, customs and extended opening hours, and competitive aeronautical fees for the abundance of services available.” London Biggin Hill has continued to specifically target new business aviation activity, with considerable success. “It can only be hugely advantageous for us to be based at a thriving, expanding business aviation hub — right where all the action is,” said Brenninkmeyer.

Oriens Aviation is set on a growth path, building on its central focus as the Exclusive British Isles Pilatus Centre and sales distributor for the PC-12 and PC24 (supporting more than 40 in-service aircraft for customers). Additionally, Oriens is looking to support new customers and hopes to be able to add more aircraft to its portfolio for maintenance.

Atlas Air Service has received EASA approval for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft components. Atlas Air Service is pleased to announce its new aircraft model independent EASA C-Rating Approval (C4/C8/C20) for component repair services.

“I am very proud of our team, which has established a completely new business unit within only six months,” says Gregor Bremer, COO of Atlas Air Service AG.

The shop floor, with an area of more than 1000 m², is located in Ganderkesee, Lower Saxony, where the company was founded in 1970.

“We will consistently add further components to our capability list upon customer request. It’s our goal to become a global spare parts supplier for overhauled aircraft components.”

With an fully certified NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) shop, a new sheet metal workshop with all tools in place, paint shop and warehouse, Atlas Air Service is able to carry out all work independently on site. Russian company Simavia has become a certified TBM service centre Tarbes, France-based manufacturer Daher has appointed Krasnodar-based Simavia to be an authorised service centre for its TBM “very fast” turboprop aircraft in five countries — Russia plus Armenia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The FAP-285 certification, issued by Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport (Rosaviatsiya), “recognises Simavia’s engineering quality and skills to maintain TBM-family airplanes,” said Daher. The certification involved Simavia personnel receiving a four-week training course at the Daher TBM factory in Tarbes.

“We salute the expanding TBM activities at Simavia, which is a dynamic, dedicated and high-quality promoter of general aviation in Russia,” said Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice-president of Daher’s Aircraft Division. “We are fully committed to supporting on-demand transportation in Russia, as well as across Eastern Europe and Eurasia – especially from remote community airports where operators will benefit from the TBM’s speed, economical operating costs, and the ability to serve smaller runways.”

Simavia is described as “a growing aviation company that offers general aviation and business aviation services.” It operates from its Krasnodar headquarters, in the Kuban region near the Black Sea. It has four main activities: aircraft sales, maintenance services, aviation training and VIP charter.

Daher manufactures two families of single-engine turboprop airplanes: the Kodiak utility aircraft in Sandpoint, Idaho, USA and the very fast pressurised TBM in Tarbes, France. The Kodiak 100 Series II is an unpressurised 10-seat airplane equipped with Garmin’s G1000 NXi avionics, capable of operating on uneven and ultra-short runways, or on water in the amphibious version. Business Aviation Market Overview Leading the November overview of Business Aviation market activity, Brian Foley notes that pre-owned business jet sales are carrying the torch during the aviation industry slump (no, really!). Here’s why… Being an independent Business Aviation strategist has its perks. Instead of being forced to toe the company line, I have the latitude to call things as I see them. Take, for example, business jet utilization, which is often quoted as having recovered much faster than the airlines. Thankfully that’s true, but what’s not always revealed is that it’s still well below last year’s levels, by a double-digit percentage, which is a challenge to FBOs, MROs, charter and other traffic-dependent entities. Or take charter activity. Press reports typically describe the sector as exploding with inquiries from flyers new to private aviation who are avoiding the airlines. There’s a difference between an inquiry and a sale, though, and some well-known providers would blush were it ever revealed that their activity was down over 50% during H1 2020. Year-over-year activity continues to be down by double-digit percentages for September, which – incidentally – is still much better than the airlines. Earlier this year I was admittedly guarded on reports from the pre-owned aircraft sales field that activity was seemingly holding its own, knowing that the industry tends to be naturally enthusiastic. Lockdown in the spring made aircraft viewing, pre-buy inspections and deliveries tedious at

best, which would normally suggest that used aircraft activity could potentially take a transaction hit of upwards of 25% for the year (the same as new aircraft deliveries, predicted by business jet manufacturers). However, pre-owned market and fleet data provider AMSTAT has moved these initial suspicions aside, and I now feel that the preowned aircraft market is poised to hold up better than most other segments of the industry. Specifically, the number of pre-owned transactions through Q3 2020, also known as “Resale Retail” in AMSTAT-speak, is just 4% below last year’s level – 1,284 units versus 1,336. I would argue that the real figure is at least on a par with 2019 since there’s always a bit of lag-time for all of the transactions to get registered, particularly internationally. The number of Light and Mid-sized Jet transactions is nearly identical to last year, whereas Heavy/Large Jets is off 10%. This is not so surprising given that long-range international travel, best served by Large Cabin Jets, has been hit hard with travel restrictions for much of the year. As one who connects the dots, I would surmise that this means it has been an okay year for the aircraft leasing and finance sector on the preowned side, but this has probably been more than offset by weakness in the new aircraft market, all classes of which have been hard hit.

Turboprops have seen slightly weaker preowned demand than business jets, with transactions falling 10% over the first three quarters compared to the same period in 2019. Turbine helicopters, meanwhile, got spanked by 20%.

Enough of the 20-20 Hindsight: Where’s This Going? Let’s start by being thankful that Business Aviation is separate from the commercial airline industry. I’m convinced the latter still hasn’t found the bottom with further challenges to come for manufacturers, suppliers, airlines, leasing companies, MRO and other support services. Over on our side of the fence, business could be off an average of one-quarter this year for many segments, with the exception of preowned aircraft sales, which seems to have bucked the trend. I’m then predicting continued improvement in the Business Aviation industry in 2021 and maybe even in 2022. After that, one could expect an economic slowdown that will affect all industries, our own included. With that said, it has been proven that the players in this business know how to play the ups and downs of any market and will continue to contribute for the foreseeable future. I

has produced more than 550 LSA aircraft worldwide, launched the Bristell B23, its next generation low-wing airplane, at the beginning of 2020. The B23 has been designed to satisfy the European CS23/U.S. FAR23 certification requirements. Bristell says it “listened to feedback from more than 550 happy customers worldwide” before designing the new aircraft. While the airplane looks very similar to the classic Bristell LSA, there is in fact far more to the new design. The fuselage is longer and the tail is larger, with an aluminium rudder; the flaps and stabiliser are bigger and better; the composite main landing gear legs have been redesigned completely to be able to carry much higher loads than previous Bristell models; and the aircraft’s handling characteristics are much improved. In addition, a twin elevator trim-tab function helps the pilot to optimise the forces on the control stick. The airplane’s maximum take-off weight is 750 kg and it has an empty weight of 435 kg, giving a 315 kg payload capability. With a 120-litre fuel tank capacity, the B23 is “a very good cruiser,” says Bristell. “The airframe is designed for long life and has a robust structure, which makes it particularly well-suited to flight training,” the company added. Basic equipment includes a steerable nose wheel and a BRS ballistic parachute rescue system. The standard equipped aircraft also meets night-VFR requirements and can be upgraded to meet IFR requirements. Alsim Unveils Convertible AL40/42 Simulator France-based simulator manufacturer ALSIM announced in late October the launch of its new convertible simulator, the AL40/42. This simulator combines two popular Diamond aircraft, the DA40 & DA42, in one device, “bringing flexibility to flight schools,” said the company. The device reproduces the Diamond-specific interior cockpits and flight decks. Changing from the DA42 to the DA40 configuration is “fast and easy” and is performed by swapping only the dashboard and the middle console. The conversion kit provides two cockpit and central panels, including all system switches, Garmin avionics, as well as the specific power levers, fuel selection and yaw trim panels. The switch of the central panel can be optional as the DA40-configuration will be compatible with the DA42’s panel.

The simulator includes real Garmin G1000 NXi and GFC 700 Autopilot / Flight Director, the latest VFR-VS image generator and visual system with 210-degree screen, along with an instructor station “designed for the instructor’s comfort.” The new simulator is specifically designed for PPL, IR and CPL training needs and is compliant with the latest aviation standards from EASA (FNPT II) and the FAA (AATD & FTD 5) to TC (FTD 2) and CAAC (FTD 5), said ALSIM. The specific ALSIM AL40 and AL42 simulators will also be available with the conversion kit “and can be upgraded at any time,” the company confirmed. “All our devices are delivered with a two-year warranty and a full range of services including installation, training, maintenance and qualification support,” the company said, while it added that “a maintenance spare parts kit is also provided to ensure independence.”

TECNAM’s P2010 TDI Achieves EASA Type Certificate After live-streaming its world premiere in May 2020, introducing the P2010 TDI to the market, TECNAM has now received a Type Certificate for the aircraft from EASA. “The P2010 TDI certification is just the latest achievement of Tecnam’s continuous development and innovation programmes, adding the Diesel/Jet A1 engine to the alreadywide range of choice of Avgas and Mogas-powered TECNAM aircraft,” said the company.

The fuselage and vertical fin, entirely made of pre-peg carbon fibre, provide the best use of space, it says, while the wings, horizontal tail and rudder, as well as all the load-carrying structures, are built “with 70 years’ experience of light alloy structures.”

The P2010 airframe, with its wide, composite, sleek fuselage design and all-metal wing and stabilator, has proven to be the perfect platform for the diesel engine’s performance and capabilities, said Tecnam.

Flight safety is self-evident in the latest certification requirements, followed by the electrically operated, adjustable-height seats with 26G-capable crashworthiness. Flying experience is “the ultimate,” claims TECNAM, with the Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit and GFC 700 autopilot, entirely integrated and tuned around the Continental CD-170 engine.

“The consolidated comfort, accessibility, safety and reliability of the ‘P Twenty-Ten’ are now accompanied by the flexibility granted by the use of Diesel/Jet A1 fuel and the extremely low operating costs provided by the dual FADEC-controlled Continental engine.

Single-Level Control Continental’s Jet A1/Diesel-powered 170 HP engine offers ease of flying with its single-lever control, full FADEC, electronic engine monitoring and redundant safety features.

Along with the 180 hp Avgas/Mogas and 215 hp Avgas engines, certification of the 170 hp TDI widens the range of choice for P2010 customers.

The CD-170 is the newest design and also the highesthorsepower engine in the CD-100 series, well-proven with more than 6,000 engines delivered and over 7.1 million service flight hours.

The turbodiesel/Jet A1 powerplant offers an outstanding cruise fuel-burn that ranges from 4.5 USG/hr (17 litres/hr), at 55 percent power, to 7 USG/hr (27 litres/hr), at 75% power. This provides consistent performance up to 8,000ft and allows operations up to 18,000ft, raising the P2010 to “new heights” (for which an optional oxygen system is provided).

“The certification of a new aircraft is always a great achievement for us and for the aviation community, especially when it involves the best professionals of the Authority and from our company, setting the latest standard for safety and innovation,” said Paolo Pascale, TECNAM CEO.

Moreover, the standard P2010 fuel tanks ensure an unrivalled range in excess of 1,000nm and endurance of up to 15 hours, all monitored through the state-of-the-art standard G1000NXi avionics package.

“The P Twenty-Ten remains a modern aircraft for flight schools and private owners. And now, with the Continental Jet A1/Diesel engine, the P2010 TDI is simply the ‘ideal aircraft’, combining a modern, sleek, ‘green’ design with consistent, robust power,” he added.

Care in Design, Safety Focus The TECNAM design team has paid particular attention to maintaining the P2010 series characteristics of great comfort, low noise and minimal vibration. Some of the many options available include premium leather interiors with electric seats; the GFC-700 autopilot, which ensures smooth and precise autopilot operations; and the additional safety that can be provided by the Garmin GTS-800 TAS system.

Registering Your Aircraft in Trust: Who Can be a Beneficiary?

Clients often wonder who the beneficiary can be when they register an aircraft in trust. It’s fairly straightforward – the beneficiary of a trust can essentially be who or what you want it to be, as long as it is legal within local structures. After all, aircraft trusts were created to solve a problem – airlines, publicly traded with their ownership changing regularly, must be registered in the US to effectively operate. With the expansion of general aviation and the global nature of the aircraft market, the use of aircraft trusts became more widespread. Approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and used legitimately for over 40 years, trusts provide a transparent and legal way for these high-value assets (just like many others) to be owned by a third party for US registration purposes, structural purposes, simplification purposes, or convenience. After meeting any legal and tax requirements there are few guidelines for who can be a beneficiary – it makes sense to have a lot of different structures available to suit different scenarios. The different structures to choose from can make the decision a bit more complex, but each provides benefits to registering in trust. The beneficiary of an aircraft trust can be an individual, a corporation, a limited liability corporation, or a kind of partnership unique to a certain country, among other structures. Regardless of the pick – the best set up for the situation – it still must be verified through Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols. Properly identifying prospective clients, whether a new beneficiary or a beneficial transfer, will always be a huge part of the aircraft trust process. The main requirement to fulfill here is transparency – visibility of the owner and operator is a must.

The beneficial owner doesn’t have to be the operator though – the operator can be anyone the beneficiary chooses. Both owner and operator must submit passport and proof of residence for verification, and information about where the aircraft is hangared is also filed with the FAA. This information, along with aircraft maintenance records and more details about operations and crew, must also be available within days of request by the FAA. Beyond transparency, with the options available for beneficiary structures, the client’s situation and preferences are paramount in the decision. One example of a beneficiary structure used in trusts that we often get questions about is the LLC. The LLC is often a smart strategy for protecting an asset, but there are restrictions and a specific course of action to adhere to, namely the FAA requirement for two thirds of the stakeholders to be US citizens. Foreign entities, however, are able to put the aircraft in an LLC and register the title in trust in the US. Registering an aircraft with an LLC is a strategy often put to use by US citizens. The purpose in both forming an LLC and registering an aircraft with it are the same: to limit the liability of an individual in any kind of recourse, protecting the asset. The approach for our clients using an LLC has the same results. An LLC can be the beneficiary of the trust instead of an individual. In this way, liability is limited to the LLC, protecting both the individual and the owner trustee. Aerial Firefighting: The Fire Department of Aerial Work Aviation

Introduction In recent years the world has seen some of the most significant and difficult wildfires, which have caused tremendous damage. When it comes to the future, it doesn't look any better. However, the Aerial Work (AW) aviation Aerial Firefighting (AF) sector is a significant resource in ensuring these fires don't continue to destroy property and habitat. The critical benefits Aerial Firefighting provides is a significant success tempo of controlling fires and providing added force and safety for the firefighters on the ground. Just like the "Fire Tetrahedron" model used in the Fire Fighting training sector to define & defeat the primary elements of fire - oxygen, fuel, heat, and chain reaction, the model also defines the elements of the Aerial Firefighting sector as well: What is the Oxygen of AW/AF, what is the Fuel of AW/AF, what is the heat of AW/AF, and most importantly what is the Chain Reaction of AW/AF?

Oxygen - What is Aerial Firefighting? At ground level, Aerial Firefighting (Air Attack) is about the suppression of a fire or specifically suppression of a wildfire. Wildfire suppression is a range of ground & air

firefighting operations used to suppress wildfires, i.e., it's a different effort from Firefighting efforts in localised oneoff urban or city environments.

Working with specially designed aerial firefighting aircraft, wildfire firefighting crews construct fire lines and extinguish flames to protect resources and remote natural wilderness. Also, Wildfire suppression addresses the areas of bordering populated urban areas intersecting with wildland areas.

Fire Detection, Reconnaissance, and Mapping As with any battle, the intelligence of a situation is critical, and wildfires are no different. The purpose of aerial detection, reconnaissance, and mapping flights is to locate and communicate critical information to fire supervisors and other firefighting assets.

Opposite to popular belief, aerial firefighters do not put out the fire directly. The aerial team is a support element to the ground firefighters. Aerial Firefighting aircraft provides a massive array of capabilities from information sharing, command & control, tactical airlift to airdropping critical fire suppression retardants at the fire zone's periphery. Similarly, smaller airplanes or helicopters focus on dumping water directly to fires to stabilize the situation to allow ground crews to establish firebreaks.

In addition to detecting and mapping fires, this operation provides ground firefighters with real-time intelligence on fire behaviour, provides commanders and supervisors recommendations when appropriate, and describes critical access routes into and out of fire areas for responding units.

Fuel - What does Aerial Firefighting Do? Aerial Firefighting is not a one-off aircraft dropping a bucket of water on a spot fire or laying a red dye cloud on a rowing Fireline. It's an international Air Force consisting of specialised missions and aircraft with a focused effort to

operate at a higher altitude than the other operational aircraft to maintain situational awareness and lead Attack Aircraft to where resources are most needed.

A top-notch aerial firefighter isn't a flyer – they're a firefighter with an aircraft. They understand fire behaviour and firefighting procedures. They know that Firefighting is the mission, and their expert professional skills are part of stopping these devastating wildfires. Though fighting wildfires from the air or the ground are deeply humbling and rewarding, it requires specific skills and a lot of sacrifices.

Air Attack (Water Bombing, Slurry Bombing) The most eye-catching and recognised operation of Aerial Firefighting, Air Attack operations, is the actual effort of applying aerial resources, both fixed-wing and rotorcraft, on to a fire. Air Attack operations consist of dropping water, foam, or fire-retardant slurries on or in front of the fire to reduce or halt a fire's spread.

Even though the Aerial Firefighting sector is crewed by many types of highly skilled professionals that ensure firefighting operations are safe and effective, here are a couple of those skill-sets that are either the core of operations or bring a unique aspect to suppressing fire from the Air:

Tactical Airlift If you compare it, fighting fires from the air is much like bringing troops into a combat zone and assisting them from the air. Aerial Firefighting tactical airlift operations rapidly deliver firefighters to remote localized fires by airdrop, rappelling, or winching.

Air Tactical Group Supervisor (Air Attack Supervisor) The Air Tactical Group Supervisor (ATGS) coordinates with other Supervisors, monitors missions in-flight to ensure safety, and updates aircrews of changes, diverts or recalls aerial assets.

Firefighters equipped with minimal life support supplies, chainsaws, and other hand tools are airlifted to the edge of remote or inaccessible fire lines to cut and smother the burning brush. Aerial Ignition The opposite of suppressing fires, Aerial Firefighters also fight fire with fire. Aerial Ignition operations are the deliberate effort of dropping incendiary devices to ignite backburns or planned fuel reduction burns to minimize the spread of fires. One method to ignite a prescribed fire on a wildfire is dispensing pyrotechnic ping ball size projectiles from specially designed dispensers mounted in helicopters or unmanned aircraft.

Heat - What are the Aircraft Used in Aerial Firefighting? Like with any complex undertaking, a wide range of fixedwing and rotary-wing aircraft supports wildfire suppression operations. Aircraft are selected for individual tasks based on their suitability for the task and their costeffectiveness. Aerial Detection and Aerial Supervision In the mission role of Aerial Detection and Aerial Supervision, fixed-wing light-twin piston-engine and turboprop aircraft are utilized or preferred. These types of aircraft tend to be fast, maneuverable, and have a large field of vision.

Some of the most popular firefighting helicopters include light, medium-lift, and heavy-lift platforms, i.e., Eurocopter - AS350 Squirrel, Sikorsky - S-64 Skycrane, Bell – 204/205, and the Sikorsky - S-70 Firehawk. Unmanned When it comes to unmanned aircraft used in battling wildfires, this new aviation technology is getting started. Currently, unmanned aircraft are not utilised or deployed at the same level as manned aircraft. Many firefighting organisations worldwide are still testing and analyzing how best to utilise this technology in their standard operations. However, unmanned aircraft are getting a lot of attention regarding the specific Aerial Firefighting missions of fire detection, command & control, and even aerial ignition. Currently, several Firefighting agencies, universities, and unmanned aircraft manufacturers are hard at work adapting drones with specialised remote sensors, communication systems, and dispenser units to enhance or bring efficiencies to current Aerial Firefighting operations.

Some of the aircraft used today for this Aerial Firefighting role is the North American-Rockwell - OV-10A "Bronco," Cessna - Skymaster, and the Rockwell International - Aero Commander. Air Tanker When it comes to aircraft that Air Attack or conduct "Water Bombing" operations, the primary class is fix-wing turbo and jet aircraft, i.e., from single-engine to quadjets. Additionally, these Air Tankers are categorized based on their fire retardant carrying capacity - light, medium, heavy, and super heavy. Even though many classes, makes, and models of aircraft are used in Air Tanker operations, the following platforms can be seen regularly around the world battling wildfires: • Light: Air Tractor Inc. - AT-802 Fire Boss • Medium: Canadair/Bombardier – CL-415 Superscooper • Heavy: McDonnell Douglas - DC-10 Air Tanker • Super Heavy: Boeing – B-747 Helicopter Like fixed-wing Aerial Firefighting aircraft, helicopters operate in all the primary Aerial Firefighting mission profiles, i.e., Aerial Supervision, Air Attack (Helitankers), and Tactical Airlift (Helitack). Because of helicopters' unique flying capabilities, they're highly effective in supporting ground firefighters by providing rapid close-quarter transportation and precision water/retardant drops.

The Air Attack Supervisor, when assigned, leads both initial attack and extended attack operations. Their responsibilities include overseeing assets, including ground crews and other aviation personnel, and aircraft needed to control the fire and establish control lines or firelines ahead of the wildfire. Air Tanker Pilot Aerial firefighter Pilots or Operators operate fixed-wing or rotor-wing platforms to contain wildfires. Their duties can include fire detection, command & control, transporting fire crews and materials, distributing water and retardant, or dropping into areas that an aircraft can only access. Aerial firefighting pilots can expect to operate aircraft under many adverse conditions like taking off and landing on a short runway, dealing with high gross weights, flying in areas of reduced visibility, and many more. Smoke Jumper and Helicopter Rappeller Smokejumpers and Helicopter Rappellers (Helitack crewmember) are specially trained wildland firefighters who provide an initial attack response on wildland fires in remote areas. They are rapidly deployed by fixed-wing or helicopter assets to inaccessible locations via parachute or lowered by rappelling gear to build fire lines using Pulaski tools and cutting down trees with chainsaws. Because both Smoke Jumpers and Helicopter Rappellers operate in isolated locations, they carry everything they need to survive and control a wildfire for up to 2 days. It's not unheard of for Jumpers and Rappellers to lug up to 120 lbs of food, water, and firefighting equipment, all while conducting strenuous and dangerous work. As you can imagine, parachuting or rappelling from aircraft is dangerous work. These firefighters are specially trained and certified to jump or descend from aircraft utilising specialised gear. Smoke Jumpers are trained to deploy at 1500 feet and Rappelers at 250 feet from light or medium aircraft and land precisely between tall trees while carrying their heavy gear and equipment.

Summary As you can see, Aerial Firefighting is truly a Fire Department and an Air Force in itself. Like other Aerial Work aviation sectors, Aerial Firefighting bears specialised personnel and machines to support ground firefighters in suppressing devastating wildfires. When it comes to the future and the forecast of ever more devastating wildfires blazing worldwide, Aerial Firefighting will do even more. Like the "Fire Tetrahedron" model, Aerial Firefighting is indeed the oxygen, fuel, heat, and chain reaction of keeping the world safe.

From May 2021, Quark Expeditions will offer “the ultimate guest experience in polar adventure to the Arctic and Antarctic regions on this technologically advanced ship, which features an innovative mix of sustainability features that will exceed all industry standards.” The agreement with Quark Expeditions, a provider of exclusive polar adventures to the Arctic and Antarctic regions (as part of the Travelopia Group), will see Luxaviation Group’s VVIP helicopter management company, Starspeed, manage two twin-engine helicopters that will serve Quark Expeditions’ first new-build, technologically-advanced polar vessel, Ultramarine.

The R66 Turbine Marine delivers the same power and performance as a standard R66 but with inflatable pop-outs floats for overwater travel.

In July, Robinson delivered its 1000th R66 Turbine helicopter. A significant milestone that demonstrates the R66 is the top performer and leader in its class. Powered by the Rolls Royce RR300 turbine engine, the R66 recently surpassed 1. 2 million flight hours without a single reported in-flight engine failure. This accomplishment demonstrates a level of reliability that exceeds EASA’s stringent requirements for single-engine helicopters. A derivative of the Alison 250 series, the RR300 features a simplified single-stage centrifugal compressor for high reliability and less maintenance. The engine burns Jet A fuel, at a rate of approximately 23 U.S. gallons (87 liters) per hour. In 2007, Frank Robinson announced the R66 after a deal was struck with Rolls Royce to develop the RR300 engine. The R66 was FAA certified in October 2010 and the first production R66 was delivered the following month. Since then, the R66 has proven itself on a daily basis and has risen to the challenges of flying to the North Pole and circumnavigating the globe multiple times. S/N 1000 was delivered to Robinson dealer Les Gillespie of Gardner Aviation. When asked about the R66, Gillespie said, “Because the R66 can be configured to meet the needs of any pilot or helicopter flight department, it quickly became our number-one selling helicopter.” Today’s R66 is also available in police, news, and float configurations. Options include air conditioning, cargo hook, lithium-ion battery, fuel flow system, auxiliary fuel tanks, impact resistance windshields, state-of-the-art touchscreen avionics, and a SAS/autopilot, making it a multipurpose helicopter suitable for private and commercial applications.

The R66 is available with Garmin’s latest TXi displays and GPS/COM/NAV GTN Xi navigators. Genesys HeliSAS autopilot is also an option offering heading hold, altitude hold, navigation signal tracking, and approach guidance.

Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

Two sizes, large and small, of auxiliary fuel tanks are offered. The small fuel tank holds 23.2 gallons (88 liters), adds approximately 1 hour to helicopter endurance, and extends its range by as much as 100 nautical miles (115 statute miles). The large tank holds 43-gallons, adds approximately 2 hours to helicopter endurance, and extends the helicopter’s range by as much as 200 nautical miles (230 statute miles).

Impact-Resistant Windshields

R66 Impact-resistant windshields provide protection from bird strikes.

Cargo Hook

The cargo hook carries external loads up to 1200 lb and, for external load operations, the R66’s maximum gross weight increases from 2700 lb to 2900 lb. The cargo hook installation includes right and left-seat controls, allowing for solo flight from either seat.
