Centenary of World's First Control Tower Celebrated At Croydon

A ceremony was held on 25th February at the site of the world’s first air traffic control tower, at the former site of the now-closed Croydon Airport, to mark 100 years since it was commissioned by the UK government — a move that helped usher in the age of mass air travel. The tower was built at what was then London’s main airport in Croydon and kick-started the development of air traffic control. A century later and NATS, as the UK’s main air traffic control service, manages 2.6 million flights a year carrying hundreds of millions of passengers. The concept of air traffic control emerged alongside the rise of the world’s first airline passenger services. Finding a way to safely organise growing levels of traffic saw the UK Air Ministry commission a new building at Croydon Airport, to be “erected 15 feet above ground level” and with “large windows to be placed on all four walls.” The building was to be called the “Aerodrome Control Tower” and at a stroke coined both the term that has remained synonymous with air traffic control for the past 100 years, and a design that remains instantly recognisable. Ian Walker, chair of Historic Croydon Airport Trust, said: “In 1920 there was no blueprint for what air traffic control or even an airport should look like, so it fell to those early pioneers to develop, test and implement the ideas that would enable air travel to grow safely. “Airfields before this had radio offices and ‘aerial lighthouses’, but nothing with the explicit intent of providing technical air traffic services to aircraft. The ‘control tower’ was described as an ‘essential’ development and its legacy lives on with us today.” The first controllers – known as Civil Aviation Traffic Officers (CATOs) – provided basic traffic, location and weather information to pilots over the radio, which itself was still a relatively new invention.

The progress of the dozen or so daily flights was tracked using basic radiobased navigation and plotted on paper maps and using pins and flags. These days, NATS’ 1,700 air traffic controllers handle up to 8,000 flights a day in some of the world’s busiest airspace. Juliet Kennedy, NATS operations director, said: “We’ve come a long way since the first controllers in terms of the amount of traffic we handle and the tools we use, but the motivation to harness the latest technology to help make flying safer and more efficient remains at the absolute heart of what we do.” In 2019 NATS introduced real-time satellite tracking to improve the safety and environmental performance of flights over the North Atlantic, while at Heathrow it is researching the use of Artificial Intelligence to cut weather-related delays at airports. Juliet Kennedy continued: “We have a £1 billion investment programme, but technology alone is not the answer if we’re going to both keep pace with the growing demand to fly and meet the huge challenge of climate change. Modernising our airspace is now absolutely essential.” The UK’s network of airways and flight paths were first designed in the 1950s and make it impossible to take full advantage of the capabilities of modern aircraft. NATS is playing a leading role in cross-industry plans to modernise the country’s airspace over the next five years, something that will allow aircraft to fly higher for longer, get more direct routings, and enable more continuous descent approaches, reducing both fuel burn and emissions. “The early pioneers of the 1920s laid down the foundations that allowed aviation to flourish in the 20th Century and enrich the lives of countless people around the world. Now, with over 3 million flights a year predicted by 2030, we need to do the same for the rest of the 21st,” concluded Juliet. T

Sonaca Aircraft Unveils New Assembly Site Sonaca Aircraft has unveiled new facilities at Namur Aerodrome in Belgium which will ensure it can meet demand for its new Sonaca 200 single-engine piston aeroplane. The infrastructure includes a 2,000 m2 assembly hall, offices, and a showroom. The aerodrome itself has two parallel runways and facilitates testing and take-offs all year round. “The start of activity on the Namur site has marked a decisive turning point in Sonaca 200 production and deliveries,” said Harold van der Straten, Sonaca Aircraft CEO. “Thanks to this new infrastructure, we can simultaneously assemble eight aircraft and produce around 60 aircraft per year, or even up to 80 aircraft per year in the event of peak periods."

Celebrates 50th Anniversary of it producing aircraft at Kunovice Evektor is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of two-seat training and touring aircraft. Aircraft manufacturer Evektor is marking the 50th anniversary of aircraft production at its plant at Kunovice in the Czech Republic. The history of Evektor-Aerotechnik began in 1970 when the Aerotechnik was established as a producer of GA aircraft. However, aircraft manufacturing at Kunovice dates back to 1936, when Avia established a manufacturing plant there; and the Czech aviation industry itself is over 100 years old.

EV-55 OUTBACK PRODUCTION

Aerotechnik produced almost 200 L-13 Vivat motor gliders, as well as repairing and overhauling “Zlin” and “L-60 Brigadýr” aircraft. In 1996 Aerotechnik was acquired by Evektor, a prominent design and engineering company with extensive activities in aviation and automotive industries. Evektor-Aerotechnik gradually developed into one of the leaders and biggest producers of light sport aircraft, with more than 1,400 delivered to 50 countries globally, and an estimated one million flight hours logged. The company claims its involvement in civilian as well as military GA programmes, “makes Evektor stand apart from other LSA manufacturers.”

EV-55 OUTBACK

Since the second half of the 1990s, Evektor has been producing modern light sport aeroplanes for touring and flight training. The EV-97 Eurostar has been manufactured since 1997, with almost 1,000 delivered to date. The company states that “It has become one of the best proven advanced UL aircraft on the market.” During more than 20 years of production, Evektor has introduced ten design iterations of this model. In 1999 Evektor introduced the EV-97 VLA Harmony for pilot training. It gained Czech CAA JAR-VLA certification in 2003, and EASA certification in 2005. The Harmony became the basis for development of the Evektor SportStar — the first aircraft in the world to be type approved in the FAA’s new Light Sport Aircraft category. The SportStar has become a popular training aircraft in flight training organisations in the USA, Australia and other countries. In 2011 the company introduced the Harmony LSA, a further evolution of the SportStar, “with new tapered wing, longer fuselage, and enhanced comfort.”

The sixth generation of the SportStar, the SportStar RTC, received EASA type certification in 2012 and was one of the first three aircraft types to be certified under the newly established EASA CS-LSA rules. The SportStar RTC is derived from EASA VLA certified aircraft and offers benefits of the lower acquisition and operating costs of the CS-LSA category. It boasts a modern design; a robust metal airframe proven in flight school operations in the USA, Australia and EU countries; low operating costs; and outstanding flight characteristics, which together, according to Evektor, make the SportStar RTC “an excellent training platform for PPL, LAPL, single-engine CPL, night training and time-building in flight schools and air clubs.” The company says a spacious cabin, “best-in-class” useful load, range of 1,300 km, modern Garmin G3X touchscreen avionics, ballistic recovery system option, and night operation package, makes the aircraft “popular also for touring of private pilots.” In 2012, the Evektor SportStar SL gained type certification from China’s CAAC and the Evektor SportStar and its manufacturing facility became the first and (still) the only CAAC-certified aircraft type and aircraft manufacturer from the Czech Republic.

Evektor says its long-term commitment to light sport aviation and research into new technologies for the reduction of operating costs, CO2 and noise has become the basis for the development of a new electric-powered twoseat aircraft. The Evektor SportStar EPOS, powered by a 50 kw / later 75 kw (100 hp) electric motor, made its first flight in March 2013, making it the first flying two seat electric light sport aircraft in the world. Evektor is also under EASA certification for a new generation twin-engine turboprop, the EV-55 Outback. This aircraft will transport between 9 and 14 passengers, or up to 1,770 kg of cargo, targeting utility aircraft market. The Outback is powered by two PT6A-21 engines (536 hp each) and its STOL characteristics enable operation from short runways, at high altitudes and in hot conditions, and can be operated from unpaved air strips. The aircraft has a big cabin and wide cargo doors for transportation of pallets, cabin can be flexibly modified from cargo to passenger version. The aircraft has low operating costs and compared to single engine utility aircraft the EV-55 Outback offers twin engine safety. T

Garmin unveils GTN Xi Fourth-generation GPS/Nav/Comm Systems

Garmin has introduced a “direct slide-in upgrade” for its GTN 650 and GTN 750 all-in-one GPS/NAV/COMM multifunction display units. Designated GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi, the units have received both EASA and FAA approval and are already available to order for fixed-wing single-engine and multi-engine piston, turbine and experimental aircraft, “with helicopter and business aircraft approvals soon to follow,” said the company. “After decades of innovation and pioneering the GPS/NAV/COMM, we’re excited to bring the fourth generation GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi to the market,” said Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “Garmin was the first to introduce the all-in-one navigator with the iconic GNS 430/530. Over time the GNS WAAS and the industry-first GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigators were added to the line-up along with state-of-the-art features such as voice control, wireless connectivity and more.” Modern processing power and state-of-the-art hardware within the GTN 650Xi/750Xi supports faster map rendering and smoother panning throughout the touchscreen navigator. The units have large, ultra-high-resolution displays and wide viewing angles. The displays initialise within seconds of start-up, “providing immediate access to frequencies and flight plan information, saving valuable time in the aircraft.”

Helicopter Terrain Awareness and Warning System (HTAWS), TAWS-A and TAWS-B are available as options. When paired with a GFC 500 or 600 autopilot, pilots can fly fully coupled VNAV profiles and instrument approach procedures. Pilot workload-reducing features such as Telligence voice control is also available within the GTN Xi when paired with the optional GMA 35c.

GTN 750Xi

When paired with a GSR 56 Iridium datalink, global text and voice calling can be completed through the touchscreen display on the navigator. Wireless connectivity is available with the optional Flight Stream 510, allowing pilots to connect their mobile devices running the Garmin Pilot and FltPlan Go applications.

Preserving the same form factor as the previous generation GTN 650/750, the 6-inch-tall GTN 750Xi and the 2.65-inch-tall GTN 650Xi have touchscreen displays with a dedicated direct-to button and dual concentric knob.

The GTN 650Xi and GTN 750Xi have received both EASA and FAA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) and are available immediately through Garmin authorised dealers with “suggested retail price” of $12,495 and $17,995, respectively.

When installed alongside a G500 TXi or G600 TXi flight display, the GTN Xi series brings a new level of modernisation to the cockpit, said Garmin.

Garmin says a free GTN Xi trainer app is also available for download on Apple mobile devices and a new GTN Essentials 2.0 eLearning Course provides instruction for the use of the new GTN Xi series.

ANALYSIS OF THE PISTON MARKET Mike Potts analyses the latest figures from the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). With the piston market, 8 of 14 companies reporting single-engine piston deliveries to GAMA last year were ahead, five were behind, and one was even. The market leader is Cirrus with 384 deliveries, up from 380 the year before.

Closing the FAA Gap

Following Cirrus in second place is Piper, the first time that Piper has out-sold Cessna in single-engine aircraft since Cessna resumed piston production in 1997. Piper finished the year with 203 deliveries, up from 134 the year before. Cessna was third in piston deliveries with 196, up from 193 the year before. Fourth place in single-engine piston deliveries went to Diamond with 126, up a startling 162.5 percent from the 48 the Austrian company reported a year ago. Italian manufacturer Tecnam scored a solid fifth place finish in piston singles with 97 deliveries, up from 76 last year. These five companies — Cirrus, Piper, Textron Cessna, Diamond and Tecnam — form the core of the single-engine piston market today. Collectively they build 90.55 percent of all the single-engine piston airplanes sold last year, or a total of 1006 airplanes. The other nine companies build the remaining 9.45 percent, or 105 airplanes. Of the remainder the biggest players currently are Extra with 25, up from 24 a year ago, and newcomer Pipistrel Aircraft with 24, up from 22. Filling out the rest of the single-engine piston market were Cubcrafter with 13, Mahindra with 12, American Champion with 10, Mooney with nine, Textron’s Beechcraft unit with seven, Waco with three and Chinese manufacturer AVIC with two. The piston-twin market continues to thrive, with 213 deliveries last year including 107 from Diamond, 48 from Tecnam, 43 from Piper, and 15 from Textron Beechcraft. That’s up from 185 the year before. Diamond’s total was up from 86 the year before; Tecnam up from 41; Piper up from 39; and Beech down from 19. Meanwhile GAMA shows in the business turboprop market there was an eight percent drop from 413 units in 2018 to 380 last year. No turboprop maker showed a gain in 2019 over the prior year – a clear indicator of a market in trouble. Notwithstanding the soft performance in turboprops, this is one of the strongest GAMA reports in a very long time. With jets and pistons both on the rise, perhaps turboprops will rise like the phoenix and regain vigor too. We can all certainly hope so.

The Role of an Owner Trustee There are many paperwork “gaps” that can get in the way of you and your aircraft. In our previous blog, you learned about the gap that may occur with the Difference between Filed and Recorded Documents at the FAA. In this article, you’ll learn how gaps can occur during an aircraft transaction, such as the time between paying for an aircraft and when the necessary documents are filed with the FAA, which can also affect an aircraft’s title and therefore registration in trust in the U.S.

Examining Title Liens It’s up to an owner trustee to perform a title search to uncover any lienholders on record who have an interest in the plane; whether it’s a lender, a mechanics lien, or any other source. It is necessary to contact all interests to ensure that outstanding liens are properly released before the aircraft changes hands. Without this due diligence, interests can surface from unresolved liens during the gap that is created after money is transferred in an aircraft transaction.

Preparing Ownership Documents for FAA Recording The title search information will be used to correctly prepare the documents that are needed for a seamless transfer of ownership – making sure that the new documents will represent all the lienholders on the aircraft. The owner trustee closes the possibility of a gap by preparing these documents in a format that is acceptable by the FAA for recording. Problems occur when old liens are not released, even if a new lien holder properly files the paperwork. The result is a clouded aircraft title, as it’s unclear whether the old lien holders still have an interest in the plane. When this occurs, the new liens will not be recorded by the FAA. They must be able to quickly and accurately get all aircraft documents to the FAA. In most cases, parties involved in an aircraft transaction are located throughout the United States and beyond. Even with the push to digitize all FAA documents, this proximity is still helpful in eliminating the risk of a lengthy gap that can cause problems for owners in trust. AIRBORNE HYDRO MAPPING Measuring what lies beneath Lake Constance

AirborneHydroMapping GmbH (AHM) has been carrying out airborne laser topo-bathymetry along the Lake Constance shoreline for high-resolution mapping for the EU project “Tiefenschärfe”. Airborne sensing, especially the focus on topo-bathymetric LiDAR (light detection and ranging), has grown to the key solution in joint data acquisition. Over the past ten years, the technology of airborne hydro-mapping, using a water-penetrating green laser beam to capture rivers, lakes, coastlines and also urban and technical infrastructure, has become a state-of-the-art tool for surveying large areas including land and water within one mission. One of AHM’s major ventures was the EU-funded “Tiefenschärfe“ project, for which the company surveyed the 300km-long shoreline of Lake Constance in central Europe. The airborne survey was performed with a Tecnam P2006T SMP (Special Mission Configuration) fitted with AHM’s sensor technology. The aircraft flew at an average survey speed of 80 knots and at a survey altitude of about 600m AGL. It only took about five days to capture the entire shoreline at a width of about 1km. The ground beneath the water

was detected down to a depth of 14m at high resolution (more than 30-40 points per square metre). The hydro-mapping data was later combined with echo-sounding data of the deeper lake area (down to 251m below surface level) for a completely renewed map and digital terrain model of the bed of Lake Constance. With its own software, HydroVISH, AHM supervised the data processing, management and visualisation for the project, enabling for the first time a real-time view to be constructed. The data is now being used for further ecological, limnological, and archeological studies, as it has delivered the most accurate and highresolution topo-bathymetric dataset ever produced. AHM decided in 2011 to perform its aerial work with a Tecnam P2006T SMP to fulfil the company’s strategy of “green survey” – a low noise, low fuelconsumption mission platform using unleaded aviation gasoline.

In 2020 AHM is expanding its fleet by adding Tecnam’s newest development, the P2012 Traveller SMP, to guarantee greater flexibility in mission and endurance. The new aircraft offers AHM a more versatile platform compared to the P2006T. And although the hourly fuel consumption during the mission increases by about 53%, a decrease in total fuel consumption of up to 12% could be achieved due to longer turnarounds and a reduction in ferry flights for refueling. AHM’s “green survey” strategy as it pertains to the P2012 Traveller mission platform extends even further: In cooperation with a German research organisation, the production and use of carbon-neutral high-octane aviation fuel has been arranged, with the focus being on closing the gap between carbon neutral electric short distance flying and the need for an intermediate mission range of up to 1,000 nautical miles, which cannot yet be achieved by battery-powered aircraft.

First TECNAM P2012 “SMP” Special Mission Platform Configuration for AirborneHydroMapping GmbH Tecnam announced today that the Austrian-German engineering and surveying company AirborneHydroMapping GmbH (AHM GmbH) is extending its fleet and survey possibilities with the new Special Mission Platform aircraft for aerial mapping, based on the 11-seat P2012 Traveller. With the great success of the P2006T in Special Mission Platform (about 100 platforms sold and flying worldwide), Tecnam designed the P2012 structure with Special Mission in mind from the very beginning. As an example, all the control lines have been moved sidewards, in order to keep the central fuselage section free and allow room for two 735x567mm (28.9×22.3in) hatches, capable of accommodating the majority of sensors, cameras, lidar and mission equipment available worldwide. Twin-engine configuration guarantees the hatches and cabin to be always free from exhaust, so the risk of carbon monoxide will never be an issue with the P2012 SMP.

As with the P2006T SMP, the P2012 is available in several configurations and options, allowing the customer (or the mission system integration service company) to best tune the investment. The standard configuration features, in fact, two hatches with on-ground removable covers, multiple sockets for 28VDC mission power (up to 3.360W available) and a seat retrofit kit to allow restoration of the passenger configuration. There is a wide range of options available to customize the SMP, such as 115/230VAC plugs, 14V DC connectors, mission screen for pilot, operator console, electrically operated sliding doors for hatches, antennae pre-installation and approval. Tecnam also offers a wide range of services, from dedicated fitting plates to turnkey solutions, ensuring that the customer will always be confident about its aerial platform choice: the P2012 SMP. The Tecnam P2012 features a sleek, modern design with state-of-the-art equipment, fixed landing gear, robust interiors and easy-to-replace parts. Like all Tecnam aircraft, the Traveller offers high efficiency and low maintenance costs with its simple and easily accessed airframe and systems. The aircraft is powered by two Lycoming 6-cylinder TEO-540-C1A turbo engines. It is the first piston-powered aircraft with electronic management of engine power, which, coupled with the Garmin autopilot, enables a reduced workload for pilots and a great extension of the engine life.

Three Common Mistakes About the Letter of Intent There’s a fine balance to getting your Letter of Intent right when buying a business aircraft. Aircraft broker Jet Tolbert highlights three common mistakes to avoid if buyers want their offers to be taken seriously…

f you’ve been planning to buy an aircraft, seen the right match for your mission need, and are ready to begin the transaction process, you’ll need to prepare a Letter of Intent (LOI).

Typing out a brief letter to the seller before signing the contract and flying your new purchase home sounds straightforward enough, but very little in the aircraft acquisition process is ever quite as simple as it sounds. There are a few issues that can easily frustrate the process if you don’t understand them fully. Following are three common buyer assumptions and mistakes about the LOI that have caused problems and unnecessary headaches in aircraft transactions in the past.

MISTAKE 1: The Letter of Intent can be used to gauge a seller’s interest and price…

It can be tempting for buyers to test the seller through the LOI, but this approach can have some adverse effects. Firstly, a ‘flakey’ approach to offers and LOIs can frustrate sellers in the market, and you could quickly gain a reputation as being a ‘non-serious’ buyer, which could ultimately cause you to miss out on the ideal aircraft. Second, you may sign and commit to a deal that you must follow through at greater expense (time and capital) than you anticipated. Worse, you could eventually realize that you’re overpaying for the aircraft, or have chosen the wrong one altogether.

Letters of Intent that are written with a view to sorting financing, or an existing aircraft sale later tend to fall apart later. Other that incurring needless expense (for buyer and seller), the buyer’s reputation within the selling community will be tarnished. In this scenario, future offers from the buyer tend to be downgraded by sellers.

MISTAKE 3: Perfect the Letter of Intent before paying a deposit and signing the contract…

Ultimately, sellers want to see money in escrow and a signed contract. The LOI is usually a ‘placeholder’ and contains language that it is still subject to the final contract. While buyers need to be clear enough for the seller to understand exactly how they want to proceed, they don’t need to get so entrenched in the process that the logistical questions that come into play give the seller a headache. There is a fine line to getting the right balance with your LOI. There are ways to assure the seller that you have all your ducks in a row without entering into a protracted negotiation about the minutiae. And when a seller responds to a LOI, a quick mark-up or response indicating what would be acceptable in general terms is a great way to begin. Most importantly, get the refundable deposit into escrow and start moving towards the contract.

These costly mistakes can be avoided by recognizing the insights and knowledge of a well established broker, who's experience of transaction psychology, accounting, mechanics and piloting needs will far outweigh any gained through misusing the LOI.

By hiring the right professional, you’ll gain a better understanding of aircraft for sale, and better perspectives of the wider market. The right broker will also highlight the value points that really matter as you make your offer.

Unless you have the operational and financing aspects of your acquisition lined up, you should not submit an LOI. Nearly all aircraft sales will see the LOI leading up to final contract. Get it right, and you set yourself up on the road to success. However, you should start working with your broker long before reaching that stage. ❙

Cruise speeds are increased 8 to 12 knots, depending on altitude. Wheel wells, tires and brakes are protected from the elements, keeping them clean, dry and free of ice build-up.

For 200 series King Airs, Raisbeck’s SWEPT BLADE TURBOFAN PROPELLERS (SBTP) feature larger (96-inch) diameters that develop more thrust while reducing noise and vibration by eliminating undesirable drag and prop tip noise. Available in 5-blade carbon fiber construction or 4-blade aluminum forgings, Raisbeck’s Swept Blade Propellers boost performance in all flight phases with dramatic improvements in runway acceleration, accel-stop, engine-out climb, landing deceleration, and prop reversing.
