DAHER Introduces Kodiak 100 Series III

Highlights Special Mission Applications

Daher manufactures two families of single-engine turboprop airplanes, the Kodiak utility aircraft (in Sandpoint, Idaho, USA) and the very fast, pressurised, TBM (in Tarbes, France). The Kodiak 100, a utility aircraft manufactured in Sandpoint, Idaho, is new to the Daher turboprop aircraft family. This high-wing, unpressurised, single-engine turboprop has a fixed tricycle landing gear and is suitable for STOL operations from unimproved airfields. It is a utility aircraft that can accommodate 10 people, has outstanding short-field takeoff and landing capability, and a generous useful load. Its unique STOL performance comes from a discontinuous leading edge on the outboard wing and the 750 hp (559 kW) Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A34 turboprop engine. Passenger seats are track-mounted and are easily and quickly removable for reconfiguration. The Kodiak also has access doors for the pilots and the aft clamshell door, with steps for passenger boarding, and allows cargo loading with its large square door. The Kodiak’s aluminum fuselage can be repaired in the field and offers a 49.25 in x 49.25 in cargo door. Debuting in 2018, the Kodiak 100 Series II included a smarter, pilot-friendly cockpit, improved situational awareness and safety, and offered more comfort for all passengers. It featured a major avionics upgrade, to the Garmin G1000 NXi Suite. This is similar to the original G1000 with three 10-inch screens, but is more responsive and offers much more capability and feature sets, including Bluetooth connectivity via FlightStream 510. With the Series III, Kodiak Aircraft builds on its tradition of continuous improvement and delivers a standard equipped aeroplane that is “lightyears ahead of the competition,” claims Daher.

Introduced this year, the Kodiak 100 Series III is “a further refinement of a modern, safe and rugged airplane”. The Kodiak 100 was designed from the outset for float operations with no need for structural or aerodynamics upgrades. New to Series III, all Kodiaks will be equipped with pitch-latch propellers and lower fuselage skin gap fillet sealant, as standard. The Kodiak 100 Series II is an unpressurised ten-seat airplane which is equipped with Garmin’s G1000 NXi avionics. It is capable of operating on uneven and ultra-short runways, or on water in the amphibious version. Its unique combination of robust construction and remarkable 3,530-lb. (1,605 kg) useful load has resulted in many additional applications for the Kodiak, including special missions, medevac, skydiving platform, and more. Current TBM versions in production are the TBM 910, equipped with Garmin’s G1000 Nxi avionics system, controlled by a keypad; and the TBM 940, featuring Garmin’s G3000 avionics with touchscreen controller, an autothrottle, and HomeSafe – based on Garmin’s new emergency autoland system. Both models offer “increased automation and superior performance”, says Daher, with a maximum cruise speed of 330 knots and “high efficiency”, which results in it achieving a 1,730 nautical-mile maximum range (at a fuel consumption of only 37 U.S. gallons per hour in economy cruise). As of 31st December 2020, a total of 280 Kodiak and 1,018 TBM aircraft had been delivered to international owners and operators, with the global fleet accumulating some two million flight hours. “Daher’s strategy to develop Special Mission aircraft includes the Kodiak aircraft, especially in the field of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions,” said the company. Both it and the TBM can be effective airborne platforms for surveillance operations, with “a very competitive cost-performance ratio compared to existing solutions”, claims Daher. “As a result, they are an alternative – or complement – to unmanned aerial vehicles and to heavier aircraft in a platform that is rapid and efficient to deploy, with limited logistics requirements,” added Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice-president of Daher’s aircraft division.

was originally designed as a rugged aircraft capable of carrying passengers and cargo to remote places for humanitarian missions. These characteristics make the Kodiak the perfect platform for a wide spectrum of missions. Its main missions include: AIR AMBULANCE: Medevac operations have been at the heart of the Kodiak design from the beginning. The plane is quickly and easily adapted from passenger and cargo hauling to medical airlift in emergencies. Kodiak air ambulance services have been used in the aftermath of recent earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and floods. More recently Arkansas air ambulance has ordered two Kodiak 100 series III aircraft in this configuration. FIREFIGHTING SUPPORT: Because of their efficiency, excellent visibility, long-loiter, and off-airport capabilities, the Kodiak has increasingly found favour in the wilderness fire management and suppression missions. Bridger Aerospace, based in Bozeman, Montana, performs firefighting and aerial survey duties with four Kodiak 100s. Bridger’s primary missions have involved spotting for firefighting crews and aerial tanker drops. The Kodiak is ideally suited for such “Lead Plane” function as it can direct the airtankers to the target. Meanwhile the Kodiak’s short takeoff and landing characteristics enable operators to drop crews and supplies to very short and narrow backcountry strips.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT: With budgets tight and on-the-ground personnel limited, the Kodiak has proved to be an effective and economical solution for governmental management of wildlife and habitat. In Botswana, Kodiaks have supported elephant and rhino anti-poaching efforts while also serving as tourism transport and medical evacuation. INTELLIGENCE, SURVEILLANCE & RECONNAISSANCE (ISR): Meta Special Aerospace, an ISR mission provider based in Oklahoma, is the most recent customer in this category. ISR technology has become increasingly important for police and national security services worldwide. The Kodiak is the perfect platform with approximately 200 amps excess power available for mission systems. It is easily adaptable to state-of-the-art equipment and can loiter for up to ten hours at very slow speeds, virtually undetected. AERIAL MAPPING: Super accurate aerial mapping using conventional terrain measurement tools or advanced technologies, like LIDAR or Synthetic Aperture Radar, is made all the more feasible with the stable Kodiak platform. Able to carry a useful load of 3530 lbs for over 1000 nautical miles, the Kodiak enables mapping teams to complete their tasks quickly and cost-efficiently.

SKYDIVING OPERATIONS: The Kodiak is quickly and easily adapted to parachute operations with bench seating and a special roll-up door. The Kodiak has the ability to carry up to 15 parachutists to 10,000 ft altitude in 10 minutes, performing three rotations per hour, providing operators with the best return on their aircraft investment.

The TBM — Very Fast Turboprop for Special Missions

In the Special Missions role, the TBM 940 offers high speed range for sensitive missions and rapid travel time to the mission zone with reduced external noise for discretion, short takeoff and landing distances, enabling operations from 2,455-ft (750-metre) runways, and a modern human-machine interface (main functions available on control yoke, single power lever), allowing the crew to fly comfortably during long-duration missions. These modifications were already validated by Daher through several flight test campaigns, followed by the operational use of a 110 lb. (50 kg) ultra-high-definition camera as a video platform. These campaigns confirmed that the TBM retains its handling qualities and flight envelope performance in the special mission configuration. In addition to photographic duties, this TBM configuration is ultimately capable of performing ISR missions with a multi-sensor optronic pod, as well as Synthetic Aperture Radar/Ground Moving Target Indicator radar (SAR/GMTI), a communication interception system, and secure transmission means. Daher To Supply 4 TBM 940s to French Flight Test Centres The French Ministry of Defence has announced a framework agreement to acquire four Daher TBM 940 very fast turboprop aircraft for utilisation by the country’s flight test centres, along with associated services for the operation of these airplanes. Daher unveiled today characteristics of the TBM 940 ordered by DGA, the Armament General Directorate of the French Ministry for the Armed Forces. Their duties include flight testing and safety support, as well as accompanying chase airplanes, in liaison flights, and for operations away from the primary test centre locations. The four newly-ordered TBM 940s will be modified by Daher to incorporate equipment that meets a variety of flight test and training needs, with the ability to carry a wide variety of payloads under each wing. Didier Kayat, Daher CEO, said: “We thank the French Ministry of Defence for its confidence with this contract, which will enable the DGA to modernise its resources in developing defense and security systems of the future.”

About the TBM 940 This aircraft is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-66D turboprop engine rated at 1825hp (850hp nominal power). It has capacity for 291 US gallons (1,100 litres) of fuel and its maximum takeoff weight is 3,354 kg (7,394 lbs). The aircraft’s maximum cruise speed at 28,000ft is 330 knots, or 252 knots for a long-range cruise. Time to climb to the certified ceiling of 31,000 ft in ISA conditions is 18 minutes 45 seconds. It can operate out of a minimum 2,430 ft runway (ISA conditions, MTOW, no wind, and a 50ft obstacle clearance). Maximum range with max. fuel (ISA, MTOW, no wind, one pilot, 45 min fuel reserve) at 31,000 ft, at the 252 KTAS cruise speed, is 1,730 NM (3,204 km); dropping to 1,585 NM (2,935 km) for a 290-KTAS cruise speed. List price for a TBM 940 with standard equipment is $4,360,940; or in general use it is also offered with a special “Elite” package, which makes the list price $4,575,004. Daher has three main businesses: aircraft manufacturing; aerospace equipment and systems; and logistics and supply chain services. The “Eyes and Ears” of Aerial Work Aviation

Government organisations are not the only ones that conduct Aerial Surveillance operations. A highly equipped

and skilled Aerial Work aviation sector specialises in supporting such public safety and defence activities. In this article PATRICK RYAN explores the commercial Aerial Surveillance sector and how it contributes to global security.

There is a special commercial Aerial Work sector that plays a critical part in supporting public safety and defence organisations around the world to keep us safeguarded. Company-owned Aerial Surveillance operations or services provide a cost-effective and efficient option for local, national, and intragovernmental organisations to meet their public safety and national security responsibilities without stressing bottom-line public budgets. As with other Aerial Work sectors, the commercial Aerial Surveillance community has its own unique DNA of specific missions, leading-edge aircraft, sophisticated systems, and highly trained aircrew members. So, what makes commercial Aerial Surveillance different from the other Aerial Work sectors?

Let’s Start With What is NOT Commercial Aerial Surveillance? When it comes to the title “Aerial Surveillance,” many people imagine clandestine operators flying specialised equipped aircraft stealthily over neighbourhoods or

flying “under the radar” in third-world countries. The reality is that most commercial Aerial Surveillance services are not clandestine but provide routine support of open-source, public safety, and defence government programmes involving regular area monitoring or repetitive observation operations. Aerial Surveillance is the monitoring of activities for the purpose of information gathering in its raw definition form. Aerial Surveillance can include observation from a distance utilising passive and active remote sensors. It can also include simple technical methods, such as observing from an aircraft with a pair of binoculars and a set of Mk-1 eyeballs. Governments primarily use aerial surveillance for routine protection of borders, environment monitoring, intelligence gathering, and crime prevention. On the negative side of this basic definition or application, it is used by criminal or terrorist organisations to plan and commit crimes and by businesses to gather intelligence on criminals, their competitors, suppliers, or customers.

What are the different types of Aerial Work Aviation Surveillance Missions? Missions As mentioned earlier, commercial Aerial Surveillance’s primary focus is in support of national governments or inter-government operations like the United Nations. The specific types of missions fall within a spectrum between oil spills and military peacekeeping operations, and training support. The following is a sample of the most general popular type of missions the commercial Aerial Surveillance service: • Maritime Patrol • Border Patrol • Environment Monitoring/Enforcement • Drug Interdiction • Defence Airborne Early Warning and Control • Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Type of Services When it comes to servicing these missions or tenders, commercial Aerial Surveillance providers generally

Aerial Maritime Surveillance Aerial Maritime surveillance is a sea domain operation consisting of maritime and coastal Surveillance, patrol and survey of borders and strategic assets, and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) monitoring. Aerial Maritime Surveillance operations focus on sea threats such as piracy, smuggling, illegal fishing, oil pollution, illegal underwater activities, and other criminal and terror operations on the sea or coastal areas. Commercial Maritime surveillance services provide operational surveillance and security capability, including Fixed-Wing, Rotor-Wing, and Unmanned surveillance aircraft tailored with maritime mission sensors, command & control (C2) links, etc., Naval or Coast Guard Ships and command centres.

offer either COCO (Contractor Own, Contractor Operated), GOCO (Government Own-Contractor Operated), or both based on the needs or requirements of the mission. COCO means the Aerial Surveillance provider brings their aircraft, pilots, airborne sensor operators, maintenance for the aircraft, mission equipment, logistics, field support, and programme management. In some cases, they provide multi-information collection and data processing, exploitation, dissemination capabilities, and specialists to manage all the data that comes off the aircraft. GOCO is simply “Butts in Seats.” In other words, the government owns the aircraft, hardware, software, and process. The Aerial Surveillance provider provides the skilled personnel to run operations while relieving government personnel to do other critical tasks. Of the list above, the leading missions government organisations request and provide contracts for are Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, and Aerial Maritime Surveillance support. Over the past 20 years, with a rise in geopolitical issues (illegal immigration, terrorism, and environmental changes), stretched government budgets, and new cost-effective commercial technology (unmanned

systems, sensors, etc.), the demand for these commercial services has expanded two-fold. Even though both provide Surveillance, Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Aerial Maritime Surveillance are different regarding domains (i.e., land vs. sea), tactics, techniques, and procedures. Plus, the skill set of the personnel who conduct these operations can differ significantly. Aerial Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Aerial ISR is primarily a military land domain function or operation that employs sensors while managing the information they gather in peacetime and wartime environments. Information is collected in the field through systematic observation by deployed aerial platforms and an array of electronic sensors. The information is then passed to analysis personnel for processing and exploitation and then to end-users for decision making. Many government agencies rely on Aerial ISR firms to provide routine force-protection of military units in the field, international security cooperation support, and to enhance the experience of training events with surrogate forces.

Bottom line, both Aerial ISR and Aerial Maritime Surveillance commercial services provide all the endusers in the mission loop with an effective, integrated, real-time situational awareness picture of land and water environments. This is accomplished by enabling effective detection, tracking, and interception of any suspicious activity while leveraging outsourcing's economic benefits.

What are the Aircraft and Kit used in Aerial Surveillance? Like with any Aerial Work effort (i.e., Agriculture Aviation, Police Aviation, etc.), a wide range of aircraft, systems, and equipment support commercial Aerial Surveillance operations. Aircraft and systems are chosen for individual tasks based on their suitability for the task and their cost-effectiveness. Manned Aircraft When it comes to aircraft that commercial Aerial Surveillance operates, the primary class is manned fixedwing turboprop aircraft, i.e., from single-engine to twin-engine. However, a small minority of firms operate “very light” or “light” business jets to provide higher altitudes, faster response, and more extended reach capabilities. Even though many classes, makes, and models of aircraft are used in Aerial Surveillance operations, the following commercial Aerial Surveillance platforms can be seen today regularly around the world conducting routine collection missions: • Daher – Kodiak 100 Series II, TBM 940 • Beechcraft – King Air 350ER • Britten-Norman – Defender 2000 • Pilatus – PC-6 Porter, PC-12 NGX Spectre • De Havilland Canada – Dash DHC-8-200 • Cessna – C-208 Caravan, Citation CJ4 • Bombardier – CL-650 Challenger • Viking Air – Series 400 Twin Otter • Tecnam – P2012 Sentinel SMP • Diamond – DA62/DA42 MPP Unmanned Aircraft Regarding unmanned aircraft used in Aerial Surveillance, this new aviation technology is multiplying in all corners of the sector. Currently, unmanned aircraft are not utilised or deployed at the same level as manned aircraft because of regulatory restrictions and airspace restrictions. Small to Medium Yet, small to medium-sized unmanned systems (e.g., RQ-11 Raven B, RQ-7 Shadow, DJI Mavic Air 2, etc.) have rapidly increased in operational areas for which manned aircraft are either not practical or not costeffective. These unmanned systems are currently being used for force protection of small military units, protecting international airports, or patrolling highinterest migrant border crossings. Medium-to-Large When it comes to medium to large unmanned systems

(e.g., WK450 Watchkeeper, RQ-4 Global Hawk), the commercial Aerial Surveillance sector, due to the investment level plus currently a limited demand by government clients, are not highly active in a COCO manner. However, on the flip side, commercial Aerial Surveillance firms are regularly active in supporting these unmanned systems with GOCO services, i.e., aircrew, maintenance personnel, and logistical support. Regarding the future, the potential looks better. When civil aviation Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) and Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) systems and procedures are established routinely and uniformly around the world, you'll see an intensification of investment by private firms. Along with this, you will see an expanded need or desire for governments to leverage and outsource for this type of commercial longendurance unmanned, midsize to large aircraft systems and services, i.e., COCO. A perfect example of a government organisation outsourcing COCO midsize to large long-endurance unmanned system COCO services is FRONTEX (EU Border and Coast Guard Agency). FRONTEX early-on calculated it was more cost-effective to outsource versus establishing an organic fleet of Mid-Altitude-LongEndurance (MALE) Aerial Surveillance aircraft. FRONTEX recently awarded a €50 million contract to Airbus, with subcontractor Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit, to provide COCO maritime aerial surveillance services for long-endurance unmanned systems (IAI Heron RPAS) operations across the southern and eastern borders of the EU. Systems & Equipment Relating to the kit commercial Aerial Surveillance operate, this sector relies on a slew of unique, leadingedge, and sophisticated systems that most other Aerial Work sectors don't have or will not obtain any time soon. Hardwire Some of the principal or typical types of systems and equipment you'll see integrated into an Aerial Surveillance aircraft (to include unmanned aircraft) are: • Electro-Optical Infra-Red (EO/IR) Systems – Hi-Definition (HD) Full Motion Video (FMV), Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI). • High-Performance Radar Systems – SyntheticAperture Radar (SAR)/ Inverse synthetic-aperture Radar (ISAR), GMTI. • Automatic identification systems (AIS) Transponders – Automatic detection & tracking of sea vessels (like an aircraft transponder). • Secure UHF/VHF Systems – Tactical voice communications. • Long Range Line-of-Sight (LOS) Datalinks – Voice and HD video Tactical and Operational communications. • Beyond-Line-of-Sight (BLOS) Datalinks – Voice and HD video distribution via satellite. • Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Systems – Communication & electronic systems monitoring, collection, geo-locating, and Direction Finding (DF). • Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE) - Missile warning sensors and countermeasures dispensers. • Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) - Cooperative Mark XII identification IFF, mode select (Mode S), and interface with the aircraft’s traffic collision and avoidance system (TCAS). • and many more….

systems as a fully integrated aircraft without the complexity of hardwiring everything permanently. Such a unit’s benefit is to change a single aircraft’s capabilities with ease while making it a truly cost-effective and MultiMission platform.

MT-Propeller has received an EASA Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for its 5-blade Quiet Fan Jet composite propeller on the Quest Kodiak 100 series with Aerocet 6650 floats, and powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34 turboprop engine. Oriens Aviation Becomes Pilatus PC-24 Service Centre Oriens Aviation, the official Pilatus Centre for the British Isles, is celebrating becoming a fully authorised PC-24 Service Centre, which also means it has added service station status for Williams FJ44 turbofan engines to its expertise.

The London Biggin Hill Airport-based company has completed its first annual check on a PC-24 “Super Versatile Jet” for a private UK customer.

Driving this may well be health and safety concerns, suggested Brenninkmeyer. “Travelling in a secure environment is a big driver for entrepreneurs and business owners who want to keep their employees and families safe. This 10seat variant could be especially appealing as a corporate shuttle.

History of Wipaire Ben Wiplinger was the creator of Wipline floats. He studied aerospace engineering in the 1940s before moving to California to work for Douglas Aircraft. After WWII, Ben started Wiplinger Aircraft Service, an FBO offering fuel service, aircraft sales, maintenance, restoration and upholstery at South St. Paul Airport, Minnesota. Ben purchased his first seaplane in 1951 and began flying north on fishing expeditions. He developed an improved hydraulic system for his Edo 14 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE APRIL 2021

floats. In 1959, Ben sold his FBO business and in 1960 he incorporated Wipline Inc and set to work creating his first set of floats. He purchased a Cessna 185 to test them. To create a better float Ben worked with experts at 3M to develop a metal bonding technique that would allow him to use fewer rivets and therefore achieve a smoother and lighter float. It took three years and $8,000 to get the patent on this process. Another innovative idea was the flat top on the float. This allowed pilot and passengers to get in and out of the airplane with much less risk of taking an impromptu swim! In 1962 he sold his first set of floats, to Ontario Central Airlines. Soon the Cessna 185 was Certified on 3700 and 3900 floats followed by the 206 on 3700, 3900 and 3730’s. The Wipline Inc facilities were all located on Fleming Field and produced around 30 sets of floats in the first ten years. In 1971, after Ben purchased 160 acres of land along the Mississippi River. Float manufacturing moved down to the River Road facility and the seaplane base was established. In 1974 Ben’s son Bob expanded the range of services by founding Wipaire, Inc., performing maintenance as a certified Cessna service centre at Fleming Field. Wipline, Inc. and Wipaire, Inc. came together in 1979 when Bob purchased Wipline Inc from Ben. During the late seventies they decided to tackle “a huge project”, the Nomad. Though the Nomad Aircraft had a short production run and only resulted in a few sales the design for the Nomad float opened the door to other larger scale projects and became the foundation for the popular Wipline 8000 Float. 1982 saw the introduction of the Wipline 6000 for the de Havilland Beaver. More than ten modifications to the Beaver were introduced over the next few years, allowing Wipaire to transform the Beaver to “a true Seaplane workhorse”. In 1988, the Wipline 8000 floats for the Cessna Caravan were released. This was one of the company’s most popular float models until it was superseded by the Wipline 8750 float. By the mid-80’s Wipaire Inc. had grown to 35 employees and had sold 700 sets of floats.

The 1990’s saw many new modifications and float certifications. The Cessna 206 co-pilot door and “Wip” wing-tip extensions, gross weight increases for the Piper Cub and Cessna Caravan, and numerous other modifications were certified. The company’s largest ever floats, the Wipline 13000, were certified on the Twin Otter in 1992. The “Boss Beaver” was introduced in 1996, combining a selection of Beaver modifications, a turbine engine and Series 6000 floats “to create a true performance seaplane.” Wipaire’s main offices moved to the new Hangar 1 facility on Fleming Field in 2001, and in 2003 the Fire Boss was introduced. There are now more than 100 Fire Boss aircraft in operation as an initial response air tanker fighting fires around the globe.

Cessna Caravan on Floats The Wipaire engineering team then drew upon the success of the Wipline 7000 and 8000 floats to reinvent a new float for the Cessna 208 Caravan, featuring improved rough-water handling qualities and a redesigned main gear system for increased reliability and ease-of-maintenance. The Wipline 8750 was certified in July 2012 on the Cessna 208 Caravan, and certification was received for the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan and the Grand Caravan EX in July 2013.

Into the Future… In addition to creating floats for new markets, Wipaire says it “is dedicated to continually improving our existing product line.” It states confidently: “the tradition of engineering innovation and thoughtful features such as flat top decks will continue into the future.”

BushCat LSA Appeals to Adventurous Pilots The BushCat light sport aircraft by SkyReach has been a popular choice on the LSA bush pilot scene in the USA, Australasia and parts of Southern Africa for nearly ten years, since the aircraft was re-branded and refined from the base design (known as the Cheetah XLS). Appealing to both the kit builder and adventure pilot, the BushCat ticks all the boxes. The kit is believed to be one of the quickest and simplest kits to assemble in its class with an average build time investment of 200 hours needed to complete, and requires no special skills or tools. What makes the kit assembly so quick and easy is the modular concept behind the BushCat’s “rag & tube” design, where all structural tubes are bolted into brackets. This concept also makes for effortless and cost-effective maintenance. The accuracy of the kit packing by the factory as well as being supplied with a comprehensive assembly manual and excellent builder support all add to the world-class build experience.

All-in Kit The kit is supplied as a complete structure including seats, coverings, brakes, controls and all hardware, etc. Also available from SkyReach is a complete firewall forward kit for the Rotax 912ULS engine. Once complete and flying, the aircraft offers its pilots an extremely stable platform with low running costs which has made the aircraft a firm favourite for flight schools around the world. This point, in conjunction with the excellent view offered from the cabin, has also contributed to the BushCat being a favourite for conservation and security patrol organisations in Africa. The rugged

design of the BushCat allows for it to be operated with confidence from unprepared runways. Once sitting in the cabin, you immediately notice how wide the cockpit is with ample shoulder room for two burly occupants. A 94-litre fuel tank and generous luggage areas make for the perfect adventure vehicle. In 2016, two BushCats were flown from the UK to Cape Town in South Africa, as support aircraft during the Crete-to-Cape vintage aircraft rally. 7,000 miles of rugged adventure with two punctures being the sum total of snags picked up by the aircraft. The BushCat is available in both nose-gear and taildragger configurations, to suite the mission. Extensively flight tested to prove conformity to ASTM (F2245) and CS-LSA consensus standards, the BushCat is supplied as an experimental kit aircraft (FAA approved 51% rule). There are currently more than 100 BushCat-branded aircraft flying or in assembly all around the world, along with a further 140 of the earlier variants known as the Cheetah XLS (mentioned earlier). With the US and Australasian markets firmly established, SkyReach has taken steps to bring the BushCat to the European market. A SkyReach office, “BushCat Europe”, has been established in the UK with the sole purpose of supporting clients and distributors on the European continent. The BushCat is already established and is actively being marketed by independent representatives in Poland and the UK. We are however now looking for qualified distribution partners to increase our European footprint. ■

uAvionix SkyEcho Success in UK as tailBeacon EASA Certification Looms uAvionix continues to make big strides in the market for so-called Electronic Conspicuity (EC) devices, with ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast) moving ever closer to being a world standard to replace radar and give worldwide coverage. The technology goes beyond transponders, which have become commonplace using secondary-surveillance radar (SSR) techniques with ATC “pinging” aircraft and receiving replies based on a “Squawk” ID. Most recently the UK Department of Transport’s decision to offer a rebate through the CAA on devices purchased over the winter, in the midst of a lockdown, has proven very popular and follows a few years where the CAA and others, such as NATS, have become increasingly concerned about infringements into controlled airspace by general aviation aircraft. Add to that the number of near-misses, especially in the circuit at smaller airfields and busts of their Aerodrome Traffic Zones, and the move towards promotion of widespread use of devices that can give traffic visibility far superior to the “Mark One Eye-ball” is obvious. This acceptance has come in parallel with greater acceptance of the value of moving-map displays such as SkyDemon and Foreflight – just so pilots have good awareness of their location. It’s a long way from the days when such devices were seen almost as cheating! Such apps (on an iPhone for example) can now couple wirelessly with devices such as the uAvionix SkyEcho II, a portable device approved now in the UK and Australia, to add traffic to the displays while the SkyEcho also can transmit ADS-B. Shane Woodson, Director of Sales for the Bigfork, Montana-based company, told GA Buyer Europe that “an increasing number of other countries [not just in Europe] are looking” at the portable ADS-B solution, which is not currently allowed in the US, for example. “The £250 rebate in the UK has been hugely successful,” said Woodson. “We represent about 80 percent of all claims” for the rebate. He added that SkyEcho is by far the best-selling EC device in the UK. After many years of confusion and some sterling efforts by the likes of AOPA UK to develop and test a low-cost ADS-B device, uAvionix (in which Airbus Ventures has invested) seems to have cornered the niche. Its raison d’etre — to create compact devices for the UAS market has led to other applications in mainstream GA, and the portable devices are proving popular especially in areas such as ballooning, where installed equipment is not the norm.

Meanwhile many aircraft do have more advanced transponders than the Mode A/C that are only capable of being identified once ATC has given the aircraft commander a 4-digit Squawk code. But even those with Mode S need Mode S “Extended Squitter” to provide ADS-B “Out” signals, on 1090 kHz as per the ICAO standard. Although a worldwide standard, this is not mandated in all airspace – in most US controlled airspace it is mandatory (as of 1st January 2020) but due to the pandemic, the deadlines for mandates in Europe and Canada have been pushed back. For GA aircraft, however, it remains “nice to have” but for many light aircraft owners a new transponder would set them back about £2,000. Hence the recent focus on lower cost solutions, with the looming boom in drones and even eVTOLs putting even greater pressure on the CAA and other regulators to plan ahead.

Plan for Europe Not being allowed portable devices in the US, uAvionix has been successful in providing small, low-cost installed solutions such as tailBeacon, which works with existing transponders (even if Mode A/C) to add ADS-B, and the similar skyBeacon for installation on a wing-tip. Now, according to Woodson, the company is in the EASA validation process for the certified tailBeaconX. This is itself a Mode S ES ADS-B transponder that is compatible with both surface and space-based ADS-B, integrating transponder and a GPS receiver into an LED rear position light. And according to Woodson, this device “is already TSO’d for the majority of aircraft” and will “go global, with lots of opportunity to move people onto ADS-B Out.” It is also compatible with terrestrial systems such as 978Mhz UAT, long popular in the US – where ATC transmits aircraft positions from the ground for aircraft avionics to display to pilots. Woodson says that as tailBeaconX is a transponder in itself, all that is required in the cockpit is a unit such as its AV-30 display to control the transponder. “We’re also working on control integration to get us on to larger aircraft — putting transponder control software into [into glass avionics/EFIS systems], for example Dynon, Avidyne and others.” Apart from the limited application of SkyEcho — for example in the UK where the CAA accommodates low-cost, low-power EC devices through CAP 1391 — The tailBeaconX could prove very popular, believes Woodson.

He also says that uAvionix has a new AV-Link device that plugs into the back of the AV-30 display, which also offers an artificial horizon and directional gyro, to provide a Wi-Fi link to SkyEcho plus other GDL90 ADS-B receivers for traffic and added features in the future. The cost of an AV-30 is around £1,500 while a SkyEcho is £499 before CAA rebate, which has just recently been extended by the UK CAA until September 30, 2021.

ADS-B in Europe According to Mike Tetlow, of UAvioniX Europe, “EASA does not at this point allow Electronic Conspicuity (EC) devices to transmit ADS-B data — only in the UK is this permitted at all, under the auspices of CAP 1391.

Last but not least, returning to the proliferation of drones and resulting safety concerns, Woodson said uAvionix offers its “pingStation2” ADS-B dual-band receiver (978 and 1090 MHz), to receive signals from up to a 200 nautical-mile radius, depending on terrain. “In the US we have our own network being built out” — the main reason being that drones (and eVTOL air taxis) fly low-level; the US system is focused on “1400 feet and above…so we’re using pingStation2 to supplement this at lower altitudes.”

Following the release of AIC 141/2019, transmission by EC devices is now permitted in the UK in the presence of an active transponder on both permit and EASA-certified aircraft (subject to some caveats), and the CAA has requested additional data from users on the EASA aircraft employing an EC device to transmit ADS-B.

The pingStation2 is capable of MLAT (Multilateration) when used with third-party software, providing high-resolution timestamps for each message received, which allows a pingStation2 sensor constellation to be used to multiliterate on Mode S transponder traffic using TDOA (time-difference-of-arrival) to calculate aircraft positions with great accuracy.

“We understand that this data will be used to widen the discussion with EASA to recommend similar use of EC transmitting devices on the other side of the English Channel (and in Ireland). The subject will likely feature at the next meeting of EASA’s Electronic Conspicuity Working Group.”

While the US has utilised UAT for Weather (FIS-B) and Traffic (TIS-B) broadcast for many years to great effect, it is only just being introduced on a limited scale in Europe. Woodson says uAvionix is currently involved in a trial in the east of England with 4 or 5 stations rebroadcasting signals delivering free weather to in-range aircraft with an ADS-B receiver.

It is believed that one of EASA’s concerns is that the 1090 MHz frequency will become saturated if it allows EC devices to transmit. In the UK, CAP1391 sets a low power output of 20W specifically so that EC devices will not materially impact the 1090 MHz frequency. Tetlow suggests that phasing out all remaining (inefficient) Mode A transponders across Europe “would go some way to releasing enough bandwidth for a much higher number of low-power EC devices to be deployed.” He adds that the CAA has taken “a very proactive stance” on EC “and we welcome their commitment to relatively low-cost 1090 MHz ADS-B EC devices and for maximising the potential for such devices to be seen by enabling them to transmit, even when a (non-Extended Squitter) transponder is fitted to the aircraft. The CAA is to be applauded for their leadership in this respect and we can only hope that EASA chooses to follow suit someday soon.”
