WHAT IS THE

LYCOMING STANDARD? Lycoming holds itself to its own standard – the Lycoming Standard. The Lycoming Standard is a bar, continuously raised, to be better than everyone, including itself. One example of the company’s commitment to the Lycoming Standard and its customers is Lycoming’s recent 200-hour TBO extensions on a significant number of engine models. Through Lycoming’s materials science and research, the company was able to enhance durability of components which enabled Lycoming to extend TBOs on a significant number of engine models. TBO extensions give customers more flying time, increased cost efficiency, and peace of mind. In some cases, 400-hour TBO extensions can be approved.

Genuine Lycoming engines and parts are held to high quality standards, offer improved wear characteristics, and incorporate Lycoming’s latest innovations and enhancements. Lycoming continually invests in the materials science research and development needed to increase the durability of genuine Lycoming engines and parts. Lycoming’s Materials Laboratory is one of the most advanced labs of its kind in general aviation, staffed by some of the most capable scientists in the industry. The Materials Laboratory performs research that enables Lycoming to develop significant enhancements to its engine components. Whether it’s improving wear characteristics to extend the component life of genuine Lycoming parts or improving materials to help boost the horsepower of the latest Lycoming engine models, the Materials Laboratory’s efforts spur innovations that cannot be duplicated in the industry. The Lycoming Standard has been in the making since 1929, when Lycoming began producing piston aviation engines and parts from its factory in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. This standard can be experienced by using genuine Lycoming parts and genuine Lycoming engines. Because an engine is the sum of its parts, and genuine Lycoming parts make all the difference.

CYLINDER KITS

Lycoming’s industry-leading cylinder kits go beyond containing the power your engine delivers. From specially treated barrels to the materials used in Lycoming valves, valve seats, and head castings, genuine Lycoming cylinders provide the most demanding operators with exceptional durability and less downtime. CRANKSHAFTS Lycoming’s decades of research and development enable the company to discerningly understand how a crankshaft not

only unites the power of your engine’s cylinders, but also how its performance drives your experience in the air. Today, Lycoming crankshafts undergo an advanced ion-nitriding process, making the heart of your engine even more reliable.

TAPPETS

The specialized proprietary coating on Lycoming tappets is but one example of the materials science that goes into genuine Lycoming parts. With extremely low friction and superior wear resistance, this coating decreases tappet wear and improves the durability of Lycoming engines. These parts are just a few examples of 90-plus years’ worth of research, innovation, and dedication to the Lycoming Standard. It’s Lycoming’s commitment to innovation and quality that gives Lycoming parts—and, thus, Lycoming engines—their reputation for excellence. For more information on Lycoming engines and parts, visit www.lycoming.com.

Airpart Supply is a proud distributor for Lycoming Engines. Supplying Factory Engines and genuine spare parts to private owners, flying schools, FBOs and high-quality engine overhaul shops. A ‘myth’ about purchasing a Lycoming Factory engine is that there will be chargebacks once the core engine has been inspected at the factory. This cannot be further from the truth. In fact, so long as the like-model, operating core engine follows the policy outlined in Lycoming SL250A, there will be no penalties or chargebacks. Furthermore, your eligible factory engine will be upgraded to Roller Tappet Technology at no extra cost. More information can be found at the Airpart Supply website: www.airpart.co.uk/page/lycoming-engines.

Airpart Supply’s trained staff are also ready to help with any enquiry you may have.

CESSNA

Dave McFarlane, founder and CEO of McFarlane Aviation Products.

MT-Propeller, located in Attig, Germany, has over 75,000 blades in service throughout the world. In 1996 MT Germany expanded in the United State to create MT-Propeller USA, Inc., which is located in DeLand, Florida. MT Propeller (www.mt-propeller.com) offers has in excess of 40 years of experience in the design and manufacture of composite propellers. “The lighter weight composite propellers absorb vibration instead of generating vibration, yielding amazing smoothness and service life improvements,” said McFarlane. The company stated that merging Flight-Resource with McFarlane was “a logical move forward” as McFarlane has spent years designing replacement airframe and engine related parts that mitigate the effects of aircraft engine vibration.

McFarlane Aviation Products is an engineering, manufacturing and distribution company that specialises in providing affordable, high quality FAA-PMA aftermarket parts for Cessna, Piper, Grumman, Beechcraft, Lear, and many other types, as well as homebuilt aircraft. In addition, the company offers a complete line of custom-designed products for aircraft manufacturers and aerospace support groups including door and flight control cables, push-pull controls, seat rails, steering systems, fuel system, actuators, sheet metal, and numerous other products for the broader aerospace industry.

McFarlane Aviation Products has acquired Flight-Resource LLC, making the newly combined company the world’s largest volume MT Composite Propeller distributor.

“Flight-Resource is a strategic add-on that continues McFarlane’s commitment to be the first choice for engineered aviation products”, said Dave McFarlane, founder and CEO of McFarlane Aviation Products. “The ability of the MT Propellers to eliminate vibration fits extremely well with our full line of engineered vibration control components,” he added.

Smart Aviation, an Air Training Organisation (ATO) based at Poznan Lawica International Airport in Poland which has a fleet of Tecnam and Diamond aircraft, has purchased an Alsim AL250 flight training device. The company, the biggest flight school in Western Poland, already has an Alsim ALX, which was certified in April 2017 and has already notched up more than 5,500 hours of training.

effectiveness and helps save numerous aircraft hours.”

The Alsim AL250 is a generic and compact simulator for single and multi-engine piston (SEP/MEP reconfigurable) private (PPL), commercial (CPL) and instrument (IR) pilot licence/rating training. The device meets all current regulatory standards and responds to training requirements of smaller and mid-sized ATOs, flight schools, and universities, said Alsim. “With more than 30 devices installed worldwide, the AL250 has a proven track record for cost-

Mateusz Dzialynski, CEO and head of training at Smart Aviation, explained: “Our decision to purchase this new simulator was determined by huge demand for aviation training, but also the opening of a new base at Zielona Gora International Airport. Smart Aviation students are very successful in applying for jobs at airlines thanks to very high standard of aviation training provided by experienced flight instructors.” “The purchase of Alsim simulators was a giant leap for Smart Aviation to become one the biggest flight schools in Europe offering students complete training program from Zero to ATPL including MCC and JOC training,” said Anna Lezoray, sales account manager for Alsim. www.smartaviation.eu www.alsim.com

BAA Training Orders Alsim AL250 Lithuania-based BAA Training, one of the largest independent flight training schools in the world, has chosen French company Alsim to provide its Spanish base at LleidaAlguaire International Airport with an Alsim AL250 simulator. Egle Vaitkeviciute, CEO of BAA Training CEO, commented: “Being one of the biggest independent aviation training centres in Europe, and working with major airlines, we are looking for the most advanced training equipment. With more than 300 student pilots in ab Initio training, a device such as the Alsim AL250, which simulates both single and multi-engine piston aircraft, is a valuable addition to the academy’s training equipment ranks.” Audrey Jeffroy, Alsim sales director, added: “We are very pleased to welcome BAA Training as an Alsim customer. Meeting our customer’s tight timing and technical requirements for installation was our main concern. Our team took up the challenge of installing a simulator in less than a month from order!”

Certified as an EASA Approved Training Organisation (ATO), BAA Training offers fixed and rotary wing ab Initio training and type ratings, as well as cabin crew, ground handling and flight dispatcher training, and various online training courses. Clients include Wizz Air, SmartLynx, Small Planet Airlines, Avion Express, and Lao Skyway Airlines. The ab initio school has three bases in Lithuania and one in Spain with more than 300 students in total. “With the extensive network of 80 full-flight simulators in 30 locations, BAA Training is ready to provide training worldwide for 14 aircraft types,” said the company, which operators Tecnam and Cessna aircraft. BAA Training is a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group, one of the largest aerospace companies in central and eastern Europe with 67 offices and production locations. www.baatraining.com www.alsim.com

The Difference between Filed and Recorded FAA Documents & Why it Matters There is a difference between the filing and recording of documents at the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), and it matters when it comes to properly registering your aircraft in trust. This article explores the differences between the two and the effects both unrecorded and improperly recorded documents can have on an aircraft’s title and therefore registration in the U.S.

How are documents filed at the FAA?

document has been recorded by the FAA. They are then placed in the main aircraft file. Interestingly, in most cases, the priority of recorded documents relates back to the filing date, giving “first in time, first in right” status to recorded documents based on the time they were filed, not recorded. In other words, generally, first to file wins (although this is ultimately decided by a court of competent jurisdiction). If a document is rejected by the FAA because it doesn’t meet their regulations, it is not stamped as recorded and it is placed in a separate file called “suspense”. The suspense file is publicly available, so anyone can view what was filed and by whom, but questions always arise about the validity of these rejected documents.

The FAA has strict rules about how documents being filed need to look. The seller’s name must match the FAA records, only certain titles under signatures are acceptable, there are boxes to check for buyers, and lenders need help releasing outstanding loans or filing new ones. If any documents are not properly filled out when filed, the FAA could refuse to record them, causing problems for a buyer or owner trustee on down the line. The FAA reviews all documents that are filed at or received by the central registry in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For the time being, there is a window in the Public Documents Room (PD Room) where anyone can walk up and hand in a document for filing. The window attendant will stamp the document with the date and time it was received. This document has now been filed at the FAA. With the digitization of all records, required by the FAA Reauthorization Bill passed on October 3rd, 2018, the PD Room is likely to be less of a factor in timely filings. However, whether in person, by mail, or via the internet, the rules and processes for filing documents remain the same.

How does the FAA record documents that have been filed?

Any unrecorded documents that remain in the suspense file of an aircraft create a “cloud” in the title that will have to be addressed before registering in trust. These unrecordable documents have a profoundly negative effect on an entity’s title, and they can be costly and time consuming to fix.

Are all documents that are recorded with the FAA valid? While the review process is thorough and careful, it is not always the case that a document is properly recorded. In other words, just because a document is recorded doesn’t mean it’s 100% accurate or valid – clouds may exist even for documents that have been recorded by the FAA. In general, the FAA does not validate the documents that are filed or recorded there. Rather, the registry will record documents if they are submitted correctly and within the allotted time frame. The validity of all documents is ultimately determined by a court of law in the relevant jurisdiction, but you can be pretty sure that there will be challenges to the validity and priority of documents that have not been recorded by the FAA.

What does this mean to an aircraft owner in trust?

Filed documents are put through a rigorous review process, which can take up to six weeks to complete. The FAA has an extensive list of rules and regulations that documents must meet in order to be eligible for recording. If you’re not familiar with the rules, specifically those that apply to your situation, there’s a good chance that your document will not be in the proper recording format. Documents that meet all the requirements are stamped a second time with the new date and time reflecting that the

Navigating the rules and regulations related to filing documents with the FAA can be tedious at best. The filing of documents is not necessarily the difficult part of the process – meeting all the necessary FAA requirements to get them properly recorded though is a challenge without industry knowledge and experience. There are many possibilities for error in the registration process, increasing the amount of time and money spent. It’s complicated and requires experts for error-free and timely filings. The main role of an owner trustee is to represent the interests of the beneficiary, and as such, it is our responsibility to ensure that all documents filed at the FAA are recorded and kept up to date.

What are Aerial Work Operations? Are you looking for a better understanding of the complex multi-mission/aerial work sector? What’s its history, what areas does it cover, and which aircraft are used? Patrick Ryan of the Airborne Sensor Operators Group provides an overview of the sector: Aerial Work operations fly everything that General Aviation (GA), the airlines and air charter operators don’t. The sector essentially comprises civil aircraft used for specialised services in industries such as agriculture, construction, media, recreation, law enforcement, medical, and training. Confusion can exist around this sector because multiple terms with the same meaning are used to describe it. These include ‘Multi-Mission’ and ‘Special Mission’. The bottom-line is that Multi-Mission, Aerial Works, Special Mission, and other terms are all used to define this same third pillar of aviation.

What is the History of Aerial Work Operations?

The Aerial Work sector has a longer historical tradition than General Aviation, the airlines, or air charter operations. It can trace its roots back to 1858 when Gaspard-Felix Tournachon ‘Nadar’ first took aerial photographs of Paris from a hot air balloon. The different applications of multi-mission aircraft/aerial work continued to expand from there. After World War I, with a surplus of aircraft and a large pool of unemployed aviators, innovative and adventurous pilots began using airplanes for aerial work. As with the drone phenomena of today, many saw the utility of using aircraft for a wide number of applications. Once the surplus market of aircraft had dried up, and through the Great Depression of the 1930s, aircraft manufacturers continued to produce better, more capable aircraft that incorporated closed cockpits, improved engines, and more. This expanded the lifting capabilities and the reach of aircraft to carry a new range of loads and specialised equipment that the Wright Brothers could have only have dreamt of. Following World War II, an even greater surplus of aircraft existed, and with global manufacturing capacity and a growing world economy, aerial work operations continued to expand.

The use of mass-production techniques (like those of the auto industry) reduced the cost of GA aircraft, with platforms such as the Cessna 172 and BrittenNorman BN-2 Islander seeing widespread use. Because of this, aircraft came to be used increasingly in specialist roles such as crop spraying, policing, firefighting, air ambulances, and more. Additionally, as helicopter technology developed, rotorcraft came into widespread use. Today, with the advancement of digital technologies and with smaller and more economical manned and unmanned platforms, the multimission/aerial work industry is developing in line with many other expanding industry sectors that in the past could not afford or realize in their business models.

What do Aerial Work Operations Cover Today?

Aerial Work operations cover almost anything. With ever-expanding technology, the application of aircraft to provide aerial services is constantly evolving and new innovations abound. However, the core industries that the sector has, and will, continue to support include: • Agriculture • Environment Management • Construction and Land Development • Real Estate • Energy • Public Safety • Advertising • Education • Recreation • Maritime Management • Animal Management • Meteorology • Science and Research • Defense • Media

What Defines an Aerial Work Aircraft?

Traditionally, Aerial Work aircraft can be defined as General Aviation aircraft utilised, modified, or adapted with specialised equipment or systems to accomplish a specific task for hire. With the advent of unmanned aerial vehicles or drones in the aviation community, however, this is not just a manned aircraft sector anymore, and the types of platforms now used in aerial work operations are both manned and unmanned. To further sub-divide the type of air vehicles used in routine utility operations, you’ll see every kind of platform from fixed-wing, rotary-wing, and even lighter-than-air (i.e. weather balloons) used for many different specialised applications. Moreover, these platforms are flying underground in mines, around and above your house, and even in the Stratosphere. Internally and externally, many aircraft used in these operations are modified or integrated with systems or components that support the specific task the aircraft is intended to accomplish. Some of these aircraft will have these components either integrated with the airframe or attached via pods/hardpoints for quick configuration, allowing the aircraft to be used for multiple roles as required. Some aircraft can even be converted from a manned aircraft to an unmanned air vehicle with a few simple procedures and system changes.

The components and systems that make an aerial work aircraft a ‘workhorse’ can vary from a kneeboard, towing brackets, spraying systems, searchlights, rescue hoists, right up to a radar system. In the aerial remote-sensing aerial work sector, for example, you’ll see aircraft with sensors, mission management systems, recorders, datalinks, and more. The interior of an aircraft operating in the sector might be reconfigured from its original layout to make it more functional for a specific operation (with passenger seats removed, an operator station and equipment rack installed, and additional systems in the luggage compartment).

What’s the Difference Between Aerial Work and General Aviation Operations?

Aerial Work operations are civil aircraft used for specialised services. General Aviation operations are civil aircraft used for flights that are not commercial air transport operations or aerial work operations. Because commercial air transport and GA have been the dominant sectors in aviation since World War II, the multi-mission sector has become a specialised yet extremely important sector. Looking to the future, with so many changes happening around the world with the adoption of unmanned technology, global economic shifts, and environmental concerns, it’s plausible to see a future where multimission/aerial work becomes more dominant than General Aviation...

Integrating Manned and Unmanned in The Same Airspace

What is the right answer that allows manned and unmanned aircraft to integrate safely? Matt Williams explores this existing aviation problem and the road ahead on how all airspace users can fly safely together.

Combined Drone and Camera Operations at the Americas Cup, Bermuda.

Heavy Lift Drones being used alongside H125 Helicopters with less than 10 metres separation at times

Sharing the Air – Safely

The massive increase in the proliferation of unmanned aircraft systems (commonly referred to as drones), over the last four years in particular, has caused the potential for a problem which hasn’t really existed in aviation before. The estimates are that there have been more than 1 million drones sold in the UK alone since 2015, with around 180,000 people actively using their drones on a regular basis. Whilst this number of additional aircraft operating in the already congested airspace above the UK might initially seem rather worrying to manned aviators, some solace should be taken from the fact that the majority of these drones are very small in nature, have minimal mass and are very unlikely to be encountered at anywhere near the maximum legal height for a drone to be operated in the UK; which currently stands at 400 feet above the surface. That being said, the biggest issue surrounding this huge increase in ‘air operators’ seems to be a lack of education for recreational or casual drone operators regarding the risks associated with operating an aircraft (albeit potentially, a very small one) and the impacts that object could have were it to interface with a person, vessel, vehicle or structure. In essence, what we are saying as a community is that there are in the region of 1 million ‘nonaviators’ who are now able to exercise the rights and privileges granted to them by the civil aviation authority to operate small aircraft in the lower airspace regions. Over the last few weeks in particular, the CAA have begun to implement measures which should help to educate all recreational and casual drone operators in the form of the ‘Drone and Model Aircraft Registration and Education Scheme’ (DMARES), which now levies a £9 annual fee from anyone who is responsible for the operation of a drone which weighs in excess of 250g and dictates that anyone who will be physically flying a drone (who hasn’t completed a CAA Approved commercial drone training course or holds another form of exemption through training) must pass a basic 20 question

ICARUS TM

International Certificate of Approval for Remote Unmanned Systems

competency test and obtain a ‘Flyer ID’ in order to be able to operate a drone UK. This is a great mechanism for ensuring that anyone entering the drone industry (particularly recreational drone pilots), are aware of the regulations surrounding drone use. However, there are many people who already own or operate drones who are not aware of this requirement. We would suggest that this is primarily due to a lack of advertising and awareness campaigns from the CAA thus far. So how does this relate to manned and unmanned aircraft integration? As with all flying disciplines, it is important that we all aspire to maintain active lines of communication and we must be willing to help educate and inform other airspace users with regards to how to utilise the shared airspace. This is in everybody’s interests, particularly from a safety and risk mitigation standpoint whereby manned aircraft operators should endeavour to understand how, where and why drones are being operated and vice versa. We have operated manned and unmanned assets all over the world in high-risk scenarios and often in combination with full sized aviation assets, without incident. But this is only achievable if we work together as airspace users rather than against each other in a manned versus unmanned mindset. Unfortunately, for those who wish it weren’t the case I hate to spill the beans but it would appear that the drones aren’t coming… They’re already here, and they’re here to stay.

Not all drones are small 'quadcopters' - This Freefly ALTA 8 weighs 19.5Kg and can travel at upto 60Kts

there needs to be a modicum of sensibility applied; particularly in the low-level environment (below 500’), where most drones operate. Those of us who are, or have been involved in lowlevel aviation operations are aware that systems such as ADS-B and Mode S aren’t hugely effective in this environment. This is down to a number of factors, including signal shadowing, ghosting, echoes and the pure fact that the time it takes for a receiver to acquire a signal, process the data, display the resultant and for the pilot to interpret a warning or alert is finite… And unfortunately, often greater than the ‘intercept time’ at low-level. There is also the issue that there are a number of different EC systems and protocols which don’t have any levels of interoperability… So, aircrews ‘relying’ on EC to help them deconflict from other airspace users, drone operators included, may be in for an unpleasant surprise until ICAO provide some additional direction on the implementation of EC and associated protocols for all airspace users. What does this mean for the drone world when it comes to adopting EC as a risk mitigation measure? Should we just ignore it, given that there’s every likelihood that it won’t help anyway? Absolutely not – any system or process that allows manned and unmanned aircraft to integrate more safely, can only be a good thing and if it helps prevent ONE incident or accident; then it’s more than worth the efforts required to ensure its adoption.

Conclusion

Electronic Conspicuity (EC) – which forms a large part of the concept of UTM, is a bone of contention throughout the aviation world at the moment and is being touted by some as a ‘magic bullet’ that will keep all airspace users safe and deconflicted.

To wrap things up – there’s only a finite amount of airspace in the world and each day it is becoming more and more congested. Therefore, it’s imperative that as a community, we find new and innovative ways to ensure that all airspace users can work together to share the air SAFELY and remember; the drones aren’t coming… They’re already here!

Whilst it’s impossible to argue that the introduction of EC into a larger cross section of aviation is a good thing in terms of its potential to mitigate risk and thus, hopefully reduce the chances of collision –

How Will the Pilatus PC-12 NGX Impact the Market? Oriens Aviation’s Edwin Brenninkmeyer spoke with Rebecca Applegarth to discuss the recent release of the

PC-12 NGX. What’s the potential impact on the used PC-12/PC-12 NG market, and where could Pilatus go next? The PC-12 has been certified since 1994 and was significantly upgraded in 2008 as the PC-12 NG. The latest similarly major upgrade, the PC-12 NGX, was introduced at NBAABACE in Las Vegas during October 2019. Edwin Brenninkmeyer, founder and CEO, Oriens Aviation is both a private and commercial pilot who as well as corporate jet flying, often transports his family and business colleagues privately around Europe. Having owned his own aircraft for fourteen years, he’s gained an invaluable business tool, with the ability to undergo missions that would be difficult or impossible with the airlines. His company has been a prominent representative of Swiss aircraft OEM Pilatus since 2015, and it’s with that background that AvBuyer spoke with him about the prospects of Pilatus’ newest version of its venerable PC-12. AvBuyer: What does the new PC-12 NGX add to an already popular single-engine turboprop model? Brenninkmeyer: The PC-12 is already popular and proven, so fundamentally this is still a PC-12. The main improvements include even more commitment to safety through enhanced engine, avionics and systems. The addition of Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) and the first dual channel integrated electronic propeller and engine control provides a 10% power increase in cruise and 5 KTAS more speed with over-torque/over-speed and surge/flame-out protection. And a new fuel system is fitted in the PC-12 NGX, which no longer requires “PRIST” (a fuel system icing inhibitor). Meanwhile, the Honeywell Advanced Cockpit Environment includes a touchscreen controller and auto throttle with only one power lever and no condition or manual override levers. Also, the cockpit includes emergency descent mode, tactile feedback for overbank protection, SmartRunway and SmartLanding, 2D airport maps with surface traffic, CPDLC,

VHF Data Link with AFIS and in-flight textual and graphical weather for Europe, TCAS II 7.1, TAWS A/B, visual circuits with VNAV.

AvBuyer: What impact do you see the introduction of the PC-12 NGX having on the used PC-12 market?

And the PC-12 NGX offers greater interior comfort, with 10% larger cabin windows (the equivalent of adding an extra window). An improved, quieter cooling system allows for increased air flow and improved performance, with quieter operation, while a new headliner with upwash lighting and dimmable cabin lights makes for an even more pleasing cabin environment.

Brenninkmeyer: The NGX is still a PC-12 at its core but with significant enhancements which are a step change from the NG – and, as such, there’s a price increase.

Adding new USB ports and redesigned power outlets, new executive seats that now lie completely flat and are all quick-release with dual cupholders, the PC-12 NGX offers more electronic accessibility and versatility for all crew and passengers. Finally, the aircraft offers even more predictable and further decreased direct operating costs, with improved value retention. The TBO has been increased by 40% to 5,000hrs and maintenance intervals have been increased by 100% to 600hrs. A new tip-to-tail maintenance program is also available, payable by the hour, that covers all maintenance (including unscheduled), mirroring that of the PC-24 and further enhancing value retention while eliminating the uncertainty of maintenance cost variation. AvBuyer: In your view, was there a market gap Pilatus needed to fill with the PC-12 NGX? Is it looking to strengthen its grip on the market it’s in, or expand into something different? Brenninkmeyer: One of Pilatus’ many strengths with the PC-12 is a thoroughly proven product. As a company, Pilatus is a leader in continuous innovation, Swiss quality and retaining the best relationship with its customers. With the PC-12 NGX, Pilatus is combining its core strengths to assure continued dominance in a segment which it pioneered; a segmentleadership it has no plans to surrender.

This will help keep demand for the PC-12 NG strong and is therefore unlikely to affect residual values of the earlier PC-12 models (as was evident from the similar step-change that occurred in 2008 when Pilatus launched the NG, versus the older legacy PC-12). The residual value of all PC-12 variants has remained strong throughout the aircraft’s history, despite the innovative changes over the years. For new PC-12 NGs, Pilatus carefully manages supply and demand, keeping residual values strong. For this reason, there are hardly any factory-new PC-12 NGs remaining on the worldwide market as production transitions away from NG models to exclusively NGX models - and orders for the NGX are already being fulfilled in large quantities. The price increase of the PC-12 NGX has ensured that there is still strong demand for the last remaining factory-new PC-12 NGs. AvBuyer: Finally, with the PC-12 NGX raising the bar for this model, looking even further into the future, if Pilatus were to develop its PC-12 further still, what are the areas they’d look to develop? Brenninkmeyer: The PC-12 NGX has been developed largely based on feedback from customers. Most importantly, we will need to learn what customers think of the NGX when they start putting it into service. This will inform which direction Pilatus’ continued commitment to innovation leadership will take in future.

The aircraft join BMI’s existing Airbus H135 and AS350 helicopters and will operate from Innsbruck and Salzburg on behalf of the Tyrolean Government, in the Tyrol and other mountainous areas of Austria, according to Trakka. The first aircraft was handed over at a ceremony in Innsbruck on 17th October 2019 in the presence of Austrian Interior Minister, Wolfgang Peschorn, and Governor of the Province of Tyrol, Günther Platter. The helicopters feature a comprehensive suite of mission equipment in a customised configuration designed by Airbus Helicopters in the UK and fitted at the company’s Oxford headquarters. The package includes the A800 Searchlight.

E

S/N: 4093, REG: SP-HED, TTAF: 800, Location: Poland. Please call for details Price: €1,450,000 Excl. VAT

Austria’s Ministry of the Interior (BMI) has introduced two Airbus H125 helicopters into its fleet equipped with the TrakkaBeam A800 searchlights, “to assist with law enforcement and rescue missions.”

The H125 was selected by the BMI due to its versatility and all-round performance which are critical to delivering mission availability in Austria’s Alpine regions throughout the year. “We are extremely pleased that the TrakkaBeam has, again, been chosen for an international search and rescue helicopter programme. We look forward to supporting Airbus and its customers around the world,” said Fabio Presicce, vice president business development of Trakka Systems. The TrakkaBeam A800’s optical design utilises lamp technology requiring half the power of traditional searchlights to deliver a more intense and consistent beam where needed, said Trakka.

“The precision design of the optical elements in relation to the lamp’s arc source is responsible for the effective collimation and reduction of stray light,” the company explained. “This design eliminates the black hole in the wide field of view and the bright spot generated in the centre of the narrow field of view previously experienced in conventional mirrorreflector searchlights, while providing an even beam with energy all the way to the edges, resulting in far fewer lost targets.” The A800 includes the industry’s only embedded in-flight, multi-filter solution, said Trakka. Up to six different filters can be activated at the touch of a button from inside the cockpit. “Filters can range from extremely covert Infrared to Soft Red to Amber,” it said. These different filter options reduce the glare from the fog, snow or moisture and can enhance natural colour in the target field. This internal design reduces bulk, weight, and costly maintenance and allows for greater mission capabilities, as flight speed does not have to be reduced for filter change. The A800 system has been rigorously tested and certified to DO-160F standards by internationally recognised laboratories in the United States, Germany and Australia, and has been qualified by all major helicopter OEMs. Trakka said the A800 offers the highest proven MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) in the industry, which, coupled with Trakka’s comprehensive warranty, delivers overall lowest life-cycle cost for the user, making it the most cost-effective searchlight package available.

Is Now a Good Time to Buy a Helicopter?

What are the challenges for buyers and sellers in today’s used helicopter marketplace? Is today a good time to be buying rotorcraft? Dave Higdon gains insider insights from Mark Clancy and Michael Roberts… Mark Clancy

Michael Roberts

Often it seems history plays out like a video on a loop. Periods of time apparently replay from past eras, at once familiar yet strangely new and unfamiliar. So goes today’s market for used helicopters. “It's definitely a good time to buy,” offers Michael Roberts, president and founder of JETVEND. “Generally, yes,” confirms Mark V. Clancy, founder of HelicopterBuyer, Inc., “but it depends on the buyer, sector, and the model/configuration/location being considered.” In other words, as is typical in aviation, the answer is ‘it depends’. “I would say that corporate/private and EMS [helicopters] are driving most of the acquisition demand today,” Clancy expands. “Utility appears to be in a slow climb. And offshore markets vary widely by region but are generally down.” “Two things,” notes Roberts of today’s marketplace. “There are not long waits if you want something new, and used prices are very reasonable right now.” One segment has particularly helped make the availability and affordability of pre-owned helicopters in today's market possible. The offshore segment “has created some difficult moments in the industry over the past five years or so and prompted some restructuring of the large support companies,” Roberts observes. “Many commercial twin-engine, late model, and legacy helicopters are not in demand,” Clancy elaborates, “especially those that are offshore- and corporate-configured, as they make up a disproportionately large number of twins being offered for sale. “Sales of these configurations have also been fueled by a new generation of replacement helicopters,” he adds.

What Else Impacts the Helicopter Sales Market?

Much like the fixed-wing aviation market, the helicopter segment enjoys significant diversity. Each market has its own issues and challenges. And each helicopter category has its strengths, Clancy observes. “From the private buyers’ perspective, there are some very good opportunities with single- and twin-engine turbine helicopters for sale,” he adds. “Many private or corporate buyers typically prefer to buy new, but many OEMs have specific backlogs on high-demand models that are causing increased lead-times, which may give some buyers reason to consider purchasing a preowned helicopter.”

What are the Challenges for Helicopter Sellers?

There are usually challenges on both sides of the aircraft transaction table, and helicopter transactions are no different. “The biggest challenge for someone wanting to sell their helicopter is sorting through the bad price information they get and arrive at a value that actually reflects the market,” Roberts suggests. 46 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE JANUARY 2020

Clancy agrees that one of the biggest challenges facing sellers seems to be trying to establish a market price based on other recent transactions in the region. In addition, he notes, “Understanding how to best position the helicopter for resale is a challenge – as is competing with other sellers that may be more motivated to negotiate favourable terms with buyers. And locating buyers for the late model and legacy helicopters being offered for sale may be problematic.” Clancy suggests some steps to help the prospective seller, among them: • • • • •

Hire an agent or broker to research the market and obtain sales prices and technical data on other recent transactions, and make a detailed comparison to affirm whether yours’ is a competitive market price. Know the expectations of buyers. Many potential buyers desire at least 500 hours of life remaining on major components and at least two years remaining before major airframe inspections become due. Negotiate the sale with buyers based on all the favorable aspects unique to your helicopter (residual component value, maintenance status, condition, completeness of records, damage history, available spare parts, etc.). Target a different market sector for resale configuration if there does not seem to be any demand for the model being sold. Consider your options. Could you continue to operate the helicopter, or offer it for dry lease?

If these strategies are unsuccessful, Clancy suggests, buyers should be prepared to wait out the market, or investigate selling to a helicopter or spare parts dealer.

What are the Challenges for Helicopter Buyers?

“The challenge for someone wanting to buy a helicopter is to have already lined-up a good maintenance facility, and to have a good handle on maintenance and parts availability,” Roberts advises. “If buyers can do that in advance, they should have a better ownership experience. Occasionally it's a problem. It's not specific to any niche – it's essentially a matter of researching the model you want to buy. Buyers should find the actual maintenance shop they will use for that particular make and model and get input from other owners about their experience with that make and model,” Roberts continues. “And these are not just hypothetical questions, it's necessary to sit down at the facility and talk to the people who will be doing the maintenance work.” “I would say there are four big challenges facing buyers today,” adds Clancy. “They are: 1) Assessing whether available helicopters are priced consistently with the market; 2) deciding which helicopter offers the best opportunity given the numerous helicopters for sale; 3) judging whether the inspection investment to verify helicopter integrity is worth the initial agreed price for the helicopter, and 4) if a post-acquisition reconfiguration is necessary (assessing feasibility and costs).

Aircraft Insurance due? Fresh, competitive insurance policies designed for you Before you look elsewhere don’t forget to contact one of the leading UK GA insurance brokers for a great combination of Cover, Price and Service.

“The solutions to these buyer-related challenges include doing your homework on the market and the helicopter under consideration,” he continues. “Ask the seller for key technical specifications and data prior to agreeing on a price and by performing a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection.

“Buyers may want to solicit the assistance of an agent and/or service center to help make an ‘apples-to-apples’ type comparison with other competitive helicopters. Decide whether the helicopter’s integrity is intact and is ‘as advertised,’ and determine which issues would need to be addressed post-acquisition, along with the associated costs.

Aviation people you can talk to!

“Leverage any of those issues in the final negotiation with the seller,” he adds.

Given the specialised nature of some helicopter operations, a natural question is to wonder whether some helicopters are more difficult to sell than others, such as those equipped for helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS). “Occasionally we see ambulance interiors go out of date and lose their demand,” says Roberts. “There's a cost of returning those helicopters to their original configuration. But it goes both ways – and one in three [helicopters] has an interior that's out of date and there's a cost associated with upgrading it.” Clancy adds, “One of the challenges and opportunities is to decide whether it is economically viable to reconfigure a helicopter from one type to another. An EMSor law enforcement-configured helicopter will require substantial cost and effort to not only remove the existing equipment and wiring, but then also time and effort to source a pre-owned standard corporate interior seating. “It’s typically easier, and more economical to reconfigure a corporate helicopter to HEMS or law enforcement than the other way around,” he adds. “This is similar to the challenges facing the offshore-configured helicopters for sale, which can be converted to a utility role relatively easily but are not candidates to reconfigure for corporate use since it’s uneconomical for a number of reasons.”

Ultimately, Expertise Matters!

Clancy and Roberts both strongly advise would-be buyers and sellers to seek out experts in the make, model and mission profile they're trying to satisfy. “Get people on your team who are experienced in helicopter transactions,” Roberts concludes. “It is an interesting time to be buying and selling helicopters,” Clancy adds. “I encourage sellers to make an investment in value improvements that allow the buyer to operate for a year or two without having to spend considerable sums after the acquisition. “This will help differentiate your helicopter from a crowded field, maximise the resale price, and result in fewer days on the market.” And for buyers? “I encourage buyers to analyse on paper to narrow down the choices available, then follow-up with inspections on finalist helicopters. Buyers should also be patient, consider the MRO, reconfiguration, relocation, and direct maintenance costs carefully, and enjoy the process,” Clancy concludes. ❙ More information from www.helicopterbuyer.com and www.jetvend.com Dave Higdon is a highly respected aviation journalist who has covered all aspects of civil aviation over the past 36 years.
