Pilatus Prepares to Start PC-12 NGX Deliveries Having launched the latest iteration of the PC-12 late last year with a range of improvements, Swiss manufacturer Pilatus is confident of the type’s continued success. Pilatus revealed its PC-12 NGX at the NBAA’s flagship annual event in Las Vegas last October, and although the evening “unveiling” – in front of 200 guests – came minutes before Gulfstream’s spectacular reveal of its new G750, it managed to hold its own in the news pages. Pilatus has been busy turning heads for several years now both with PC-12 enhancements and the development of its “Super Versatile” jet, the PC-24. According to the Swiss manufacturer sales were not long coming, with three aircraft sold on the first day of NBAA-BACE alone — the day following the unveiling. First deliveries are due in the second quarter of this year (2020). The standard aircraft list price is $4.39 million airplane with the executive configuration listed at $5.37 million. The PC-12 has now surpassed 1,700 deliveries worldwide, many coming since the introduction of the PC-12 NG, which was launched at the 2007 NBAA event. Textron’s move to create the Denali single-engine turboprop served to further validate the prospects for this market, as acceptance of operations with one reliable turboprop grows worldwide. While the original PC-12 was a solid all-rounder with Pratt & Whitney’s PT6 engine, the NG added a glass cockpit while an enhanced PT6 offering gave it better performance in takeoff, climb and cruise (280 knots). The NGX bumps that max cruise speed to 290 knots. The latest enhancement adds a completely new interior from Designworks, larger cabin windows (inspired by the PC-24) and fully reclining executive seats. The engine is upgraded again, with the PT6 E-Series that has electronic propeller and engine control (thus single power lever), while a fully integrated digital auto-throttle (an optional extra) can also be enabled.

The Honeywell avionics moves up a gear also, including a touchscreen controller, emergency descent mode, tactile roll feedback and protection, and a low-speed propeller quiet mode. Synthetic vision gives crews a high level of situational awareness at all times. According to Pilatus, the company first flew the PC-12 NGX prototype in December 2017 before carrying out more than 600 hours of testing in Europe, USA and Canada. The aircraft then received EASA certification just before the NBAA show, on 14 October 2019. The first three customers to sign up were Australian-born Dion Weisler, president and CEO of HP (upgrading from a PC-12 NG); Shon Boney, cofounder of Sprouts Farmers Markets (the first US customer, the aircraft will be his fourth PC-12); and João Carlos Marinho Lutz, who became the first Brazilian customer. Dion Weisler commented: “As an existing, proud and active owner-pilot of a 2017 PC-12 NG, I am amazed by the substantial innovation improvements in what I thought was an impossible aircraft to improve on. I am thrilled to be customer number one for the new PC-12 NGX. Pilatus has done it again – reimagined aviation and taken an already perfect aircraft and magically redefined perfection.” Lutz is currently flying a non-pressurised turboprop, he chose the new Pilatus aircraft, because “only the PC-12 NGX can reach farms in remote places where I need to go and amazing destinations in Brazil with comfort, speed and efficiency.” During the unveiling last year, Pilatus Aircraft CEO Markus Bucher said, “To maintain the PC-12’s leadership in the general aviation marketplace we continuously seek innovative solutions that benefit the safety, comfort, and productivity of our customers.

“The PC-12 NGX is a showcase for the advanced technology collaboration between Pilatus, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Honeywell. Together, we took the best, and made it even better.”
A choice of six interior design schemes (from BMW Designworks) is available with the executive version of the NGX, along with bespoke interiors and paint schemes for customers.
The PT6E-67XP turboprop produces 1,825 shaft horsepower (shp) and is flat rated to 1,100 shp in cruise – a 10-percent increase over the PC-12’s PT6A-67P. The novel low-prop-speed mode reduces prop speed from 1,700 rpm to 1,550 rpm, lowering cabin noise but – thanks the electronic propeller and engine control system – very litte degradation in performance.
What Pilatus says is the most popular configuration with its customers has six large passenger seats, with the option of simply adding a seventh and eighth. All the interiors come with a private lavatory.
The Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACE) is based on a Honeywell Epic 2.0 avionics suite with a new touchscreen avionics controller, and the aircraft has a new emergency descent mode and tactile feedback to assist pilots in avoiding excessive bank angles. The cockpit also has brighter, more vivid colour flight displays, pilotdefined visual approaches, high resolution 2D airport moving maps, night-mode charts, plus Honeywell’s SmartLanding and SmartRunway systems. Furthermore, it has electronic checklists linked to crew alerting system messages, worldwide graphical weather, and support for the European controller-pilot datalink communications (CPDLC) mandates.
Passenger Comfort
The PC-12’s cabin has been upgraded in the NGX with the windows reshaped (drawing on the PC-24’s design) and 10 percent larger, giving improved views and more natural light.
The cabin has a completely flat floor and the baggage area is accessible in flight and fully pressurised. If more cargo area is needed, seats can removed as required and a cargo net installed. The cabin in equipped with an entertainment system that provides WiFi for all passenger devices. On the maintenance side, the interval between scheduled checks has been extended to 600 flight hours. Pilatus estimates that hourly direct operating costs for the new version of the PC-12 have been reduced by more than 9% which also means it is more environmentally friendly, with CO2 emissions approximately 125g per km per passenger (assuming eight passengers on board). The Stans, Switzerland-based company, which has dealers offering support worldwide, is offering a new “nose-to-tail” maintenance program, based on the PC-24’s CrystalCare programme. This covers all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance for airframe, engine (and prop), avionics and systems – including all mandatory and recommended service bulletins, and an AOG (aircraft-on-ground) recovery service.
The executive seats have been redesigned to provide more headroom, while fully reclining and offering improved lumbar support.

FOREFLIGHT MARCH20.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 10/02/2020 11:10 Page 1
ForeFlight Makes SETOPS Planning Easy ForeFlight’s SETOPS feature simplifies EASA compliance for single-engine-turbine operators In late 2015, the European Aviation Safety Association announced new regulations (EASA part SET-IMC) meant to improve the safety of commercial single-engineturbine aircraft operations in IMC or night conditions. Fully implemented by the spring of 2017, these rules imposed strict limitations on the routes that may be flown by commercial SET operators, requiring them to stay within gliding range of suitable alternate airports for the majority of the flight. To ensure compliance, SET operators were also required to create a risk analysis document that provides a snapshot of the route’s “total risk”. Complying with these rules added considerable time and difficulty to flight planning, and the Danish company Copenhagen Air Taxi (CAT) was among those struggling to keep up. Among its more than 20 airplanes and helicopters, CAT operates five Pilatus PC-12s, a single-engine turbine aircraft subject to EASA’s new regulations. The process of calculating each optimal flight route by hand was incredibly time-consuming and costly, since weather data had to be reconsidered every time in order to calculate the total risk. The manual calculation for the flight to Santorini in Greece, the longest PC12 route in the company's history, could take up to a day to complete. SETOPS iPHONE
In its search for an automated solution, CAT approached ForeFlight, the leading aviation app in the US and a growing presence in Europe. Before long the two companies had drawn up official plans to develop SETOPS, an extension of ForeFlight’s existing automated route planning capability that would comply with EASA’s regulations, incorporating all external factors to identify the flight’s risk. Here was the ideal integrated solution that Copenhagen Air Taxi needed. The completed SETOPS feature is involved in two phases of flight planning: routing and briefing. In the routing phase, ForeFlight automatically calculates a route that is SETOPS compliant and EUROCONTROL valid, while also optimising the route for time and fuel usage. Next, in the briefing phase, ForeFlight generates a graphical representation of the route displaying risk periods and airport glide circles. It also calculates risk exposure time — the total flight time at which the risk exposure is greater than or equal to 50% — as well as a cumulative risk factor, and combines these in an EASA-compliant risk analysis document. In generating the route and the risk analysis ForeFlight incorporates all available factors, both external and internal, that play a role in the aircraft’s ability to reach proposed alternates. These include the aircraft’s best glide speed and ratio, its specific runway requirements, terrain, and weather forecasts. Particularly helpful is that the graphical route representation provides a continuous overview of where the nearest alternative airport is located for each point in the route.
SETOPS MAP
The Danish Civil Aviation Authority approved CAT’s use of the SETOPS feature in June 2017, and they began using it to plan their commercial flights. The process immediately became easier, faster, and more flexible, with ForeFlight seamlessly incorporating changes that previously would have forced them to start over from scratch. With only two airports and a departure time ForeFlight can calculate the optimal route in under a minute; a route that is both EASA compliant and EUROCONTROL valid, ensuring that every flight meets all regulatory requirements. Since adopting ForeFlight, CAT’s pilots can now find better routes, saving time and associated costs, and their use of iPads makes large amounts of paper unnecessary. They can easily plan and file their own flights by entering the required data, updating parameters as desired, and ForeFlight handles the rest. With ForeFlight’s Integrated Flight App, pilots have all the capabilities and data they need in one place. All of CAT’s PC-12 flights now utilise ForeFlight, and with its help they have extended their flight schedule to include even more routes. Copenhagen Air Taxi has thus benefited in two important ways by adopting ForeFlight: the SETOPS feature has eliminated the burden of EASA’s new regulations for SET aircraft, while also improving the safety of such flights, and CAT’s pilots can now plan, file, and fly more efficiently than ever before thanks to the multitude of features available with ForeFlight.

For the first time at
Kodiak and TBM at AERO 2020
AERO Friedrichshafen, Daher will be exhibiting on its booth (Hall/stand A3-321) its new range of aircraft: the Kodiak 100 series II and the TBM 940 model year 2020. The Kodiak 100 Series II is an unpressurized 10-seat airplane equipped with Garmin’s G1000 NXi avionics, capable of operating on uneven and ultra-short runways, or on water in the amphibious version. Its unique combination of robust construction and remarkable 3,530-lb (1,605 kg) payload capability has resulted in many additional applications for the Kodiak, including special missions, medevac, as a skydiving platform and many more applications. The Kodiak line of aircraft was founded in the Pacific Northwest with a mission — to design and produce the next generation of short takeoff and landing aircraft capable of bringing services and heavy supplies to the most remote regions on the planet. The Kodiak 100 was first introduced in 2007 by Quest Aircraft Company, which was subsequently acquired by the Daher Group, which is among the top 10 business aircraft manufacturers in the world. Although the company’s founding may be rooted in humanitarian aid, it did not take long for the rest of the world to realise that this ultra-modern, ultra-safe and extremely rugged plane had a place in business and general aviation. The Kodiak fills a niche somewhere between helicopter and business jet — able to haul cargo or passengers in refined luxury, takeoff under 1000 ft. and fly 1000 miles with amazing economy. Of course, best known Daher aircraft currently in production are the TBM 910, equipped with Garmin’s G1000 NXi avionics system, controlled by a keypad; and the TBM 940, featuring Garmin’s G3000 avionics with touchscreen controller and an autothrottle. Both models offer increased automation and superior performance – a maximum cruise speed of 330 kts. – and high efficiency with a 1,730- nautical mile maximum range and a fuel consumption of 37 U.S. gallons per hour at economy cruise. The very fast turboprop TBM 940 introduced last year, features an increased level of automation to reduce the pilot’s workload and optimise performance and safety. It incorporates an automated throttle and an automated icing detection system – both of which are installed for the first time on a standard production turboprop aircraft weighing less than 12,500 lbs. (5.7 metric tons). Their integration in the aircraft further builds on Daher’s TBM e-copilot® strategy of introducing functionality for improved operational safety on the TBM product line. The 300th TBM 900-series (which includes TBM 900, TBM 910, TBM 930 and TBM 940) very fast turboprop aircraft delivered last year was a TBM 940. This incorporates a personalised paint scheme for its owners – Dr. Ian Blair Fries and his wife Susan Fries, who received this TBM 940 version as the fourth TBM-family airplane they have acquired over the past 20 years. “Based on the TBM’s proven design, the upgrades that Daher brings to each new model amply justified our purchases of the four aircraft,” explained Dr. Fries. “The TBM fits our transportation profile: I can plan for a 1,000-nautical mile flight under almost any conditions. And it is a pleasure to work with many of the same people for years, which is a credit to Daher. Additionally, I consider the five-year warranty of significant value alone in justifying a new acquisition," he added.

Dr. Fries is a Federal Aviation Administration-certified Senior Aviation Medical Examiner specialised in Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) – trained in evaluating pilots for substance- or alcohol-related conditions or other mental conditions. As an active pilot, Dr. Fries has logged more than 6,000 flight hours and holds an ATP license with a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument rating. He is a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association’s (AOPA) Board of Advisors, and serves as aeromedical consultant for the AOPA and the Teamsters Airline Division. "We are grateful to Dr. and Mrs. Fries for their more than 20-year-old loyalty to the TBM. So it was very appropriate they received the symbolic 300th TBM 900-series aircraft as their latest acquisition,” commented Nicolas Chabbert, the CEO of Daher Aircraft and Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division. "Their enthusiasm for the TBM 940 reaffirms that Daher is on the right path as we continue to evolve the TBM family through a combination of efficiency and safety, providing the ultimate flying experience for owners and operators.” Some of the TBM 940’s enhancements, such as cabin upgrades for style, ergonomics and comfort, are applied as well to Daher’s entry-level TBM 910 version, along with the automated icing detection system. Both aircraft also benefit from the latest Garmin cockpit features: Surface Watch™, which gives pilots better situational awareness in the airport environment; BARO VNAV, allowing approaches with vertical guidance when the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is not available; and visual approach assistance in the execution of visual approaches at uncontrolled airports with vertical guidance.
“Our acquisition of this aircraft company is perfectly aligned with Daher’s strategy to intensify its business footprint in America,” said Didier Kayat, CEO, Daher. “In addition to adding the Kodiak to our aircraft portfolio, we have now gained a major competitive advantage for all of Daher’s aerospace business lines in North America.” Daher now joins the list of aircraft manufacturers that have final assembly lines on multiple continents. The company builds its family of TBM turboprop aircraft in Tarbes, France, while Kodiak Aircraft assembles the Kodiak utility airplane in Sandpoint. With Daher’s addition of Kodiak to its aircraft portfolio, the 2019 sales results were the first to include both the Kodiak and TBM in the company’s annual tally of new business. The 2019 business results for its expanded turboprop-powered aircraft family, with the company logging sales of 48 TBMs in the TBM 910 and TBM 940 versions, along with 20 Kodiak 100 Series II airplanes. Deliveries of Kodiak utility aircraft were primary in North America: 11 in the United States. and three in Canada. Asia ranked second with three Kodiak aircraft delivered in China and one in Thailand, followed by two deliveries to European customers.
Since the official acquisition of Kodiak Aircraft official acquisition in October last year, Daher, a leading industry and service equipment supplier, is now also a Franco-American aircraft manufacturing company.
For the TBM very fast turboprop aircraft, deliveries continued to be focused in the U.S., involving 38 airplanes; followed by Europe, with three in Germany, two in the United Kingdom and one in Russia. Daher provided three TBMs in Latin America: two for customers in Brazil, and one in Mexico. Completing the 2019 activity was a TBM 940 version delivered in Japan, marking the first sale of a TBM in this country since the acquisitions of several TBM 700s by Japanese customers during the TBM programme early days.
With this acquisition, Daher strengthens two of its strategic pillars by: – reinforcing its aircraft manufacturing business and consolidating the company’s leading position in the turboprop segment by widening the product family. – Achieving a major milestone in the growth of its North American industrial and services operations.
"We thank our customers for their continued support of Daher’s turboproppowered aircraft,” said Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Airplane Business Unit. “We remain committed to building the most efficient, cost-effective and safe airplanes that provide the ultimate flying experience for owners and operators.”
The Daher Group states it is now able to deploy its full range of activities in North America, including aircraft manufacturing, the production of systems and equipment, and the supply of logistics and services.
To date, a total of 275 Kodiak and 977 TBM aircraft have been delivered to international owners and operators, with the global fleet accumulating some 2 million flight hours.

TECNAM P2012 Traveller The Future of Short Haul
With more and more of the of the world’s population travelling by air for speed and convenience, Tecnam’s new P2012 is rapidly filling a gap in the ever-growing commuter market.
side, divided in three separate hatches for passenger access only or for cargo/baggage loading purposes. The Traveller’s cabin measurements are constant along the cabin, so that the ergonomics remain the same for all passengers and seats, as opposed to ‘legacy’ aircraft in this class which traditionally feature a tapered fuselage in the back portion, thereby providing less space and disadvantaging passengers seated in the rear rows.
Aptly named the ‘Traveller’, this smart-looking, 11seat twin-engine aircraft has been getting a lot of well-deserved attention from regional airlines all around the globe. It was specifically designed for the short-haul sector and offers high efficiency and low maintenance costs with its simple and easily accessed airframe and systems.
The P2012 Traveller has the option to arrange its internal design in four versions, used for different types of missions, from medical emergency services to full cargo operations. Actual configurations are Standard Airline, Combi, Medevac with single or double stretcher, or Full Cargo.
The Tecnam P2012 features a sleek, modern design with state-of-the-art equipment. Other features are the fixed landing gear, robust interiors and easy-toreplace parts. These attributes, and many more, make it the ideal aircraft for regional airlines such as Massachusetts-based Cape Air which, back in 2012, first approached the Italian aircraft manufacturer TECNAM with a request to create a more contemporary commuter aircraft. With the many hundreds of ‘heritage’ aeroplanes in the FAR23/CS23 category that would eventually need to be replaced, Tecnam seized the opportunity to provide a revolutionary piston engine alternative. The P2012 Traveller was developed by the Tecnam Research and Design team that was led by Tecnam’s renowned and award-winning expert, Professor Luigi Pascale. Designed with the passenger in mind, the large cabin accommodates up to 11 seats (with a maximum of nine passengers). The aircraft is powered by two Lycoming 6-cylinder turbo engines. It is the first piston-powered aircraft with electronic management of engine power, which, coupled with the Garmin autopilot, enables a reduced workload for pilots and a better lifetime of the engines. The mixture lever is no longer present on the cockpit pedestal since the entire control of mixture is made automatically. “High-frequency is where this aircraft really shines. The P2012 would also excel at transporting executives on short flights or routes involving multiple stops”, says Tecnam Managing Director, Giovanni Pascale.
Already established as a leader in both the Flight Training and Private General Aviation sectors, Tecnam’s P2012 Traveller will undoubtedly herald success for Tecnam in the very competitive commuter airline market. On the right, Tecnam MD Giovanni Pascale, Pilot In Command of the Ferry Flight with his crew.
The P2012 Traveller, as per its design specification, is characterised by a maximum cruise speed of 194 kts at 10,000 ft. One of the essential features potential operators also requested for this next-generation aircraft was to have short take-off capability, enabling them to operate on very short or even semi-prepared runways. The P2012 has been designed to have a very low minimum control speed and this results in a take-off distance of about 2159 ft (658 m) over obstacles. The design of the aircraft incorporates the following specifications: robust and solid design; operations in FIKI conditions; easy and low-cost maintenance; ease of cabin access and cabin comfort; spacious luggage compartments (nose and tail located); reduced takeoff run and take-off from unprepared runways; range exceeding 950nm. Access to the cabin is via three doors, two for flight crew and one in the left rear
ZIL Air took delivery of its first Traveller in November for their aerial limo service in The Seychelles. Eleven sales in two days resulted from the first public appearance of the P2012 Traveller at the National Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAABACE) in Las Vegas, last October, where one of the first Tecnam P2012 Travellers, bearing Cape Air’s emblem, was proudly on static display. Cape Air has already received three of their P2012’s and has an additional 20 on order with options for another 90. Tecnam’s Global Sales and Marketing Director, Walter Da Costa, was delighted to sign contracts with TAMIFIELD (PTY) LTD — a member of the AMRHO Group, South Africa — which ordered six P2012’s with the option of an additional twelve. Another contract was with Charter Express SAS, Columbia, which ordered five P2012’s with the option of an additional five. Mr. Da Costa stated: “We were thrilled to present the new P2012 Traveller in Vegas. The impressive number of sales signed here at NBAA confirms the P2012’s leadership in the general aviation marketplace.”

GARMIN ROUNDS OFF DISPLAY RANGE instrument while if they select the SVT feature, a 3D topographic view of terrain, traffic, obstacles, airport sign posts etc can be overlaid on the display.
Fresh from amazing the flying world with its innovative “Autonomi” autoland feature, avionics manufacturer Garmin has “reimagined” flight instrumentation in an attempt to enable and encourage the modernisation of ageing cockpits.
The instrument also overlays a flightpath marker within the SVT view, which takes into account crosswind, angle of attack and other factors.
The company unveiled its GI 275 electronic flight instrument in January. Being round, the unit can “directly replace legacy primary flight instruments,” it said, “including attitude indicator, attitude directional indicator (ADI), course deviation indicator (CDI), horizontal situation indicator (HSI) and engine indication system (EIS).”
When used as a back-up for navigation information, the unit has built-in VFR GPS positioning allowing directto navigation guidance, displaying aircraft position information on a moving map. When installed as a CDI or HSI, the GI 275 allows up to two GPS sources and two VHF navigation sources. It has an Omni Bearing Resolver that allows the flight instrument to interface to a variety of legacy navigators without the need for an adapter.
Capable of serving as a 4in-1 flight instrument, the GI 275 can also be installed as a standby to a number of glass flight displays and is available with a 60-minute back-up battery. Lightweight and compact, the GI 275 is intentionally designed to take advantage of the common 3.125-inch flight instrument size, reducing installation time and preserving the existing aircraft panel.
With an optional magnetometer, it is also capable of providing magnetic-based HSI guidance. Vertical and lateral GPS, VOR/LOC and glide slope deviation can also be viewed and CDI source selection can be accomplished through the touchscreen interface; and course/heading selection is completed using either the touchscreen or dual-concentric knob.
Garmin said that it is also compatible with a variety of third-party autopilots and does not require a separate interface adapter, further reducing installation time. The GI 275 has received US FAA approval and is available now for installation in over 1,000 single-engine and multi-engine aircraft models, said the company. It notes that several variants of the GI 275 are available “to meet the needs of over one thousand business and general aviation aircraft models.” The GI 275 is also capable of displaying multifunction display-like features, such as traffic, weather, terrain, SafeTaxi airport diagrams, and Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT). Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation sales and marketing, said Garmin was “redefining the aircraft cockpit…with the introduction of the GI 275, pilots can take an economical and scalable approach to their avionics upgrade, while saving on the installation labour and cost.” It describes the capability of the unit as “amazing” as it can provide ADAHRS, autopilot interface and replace ADI, HSI, standby and EIS indicators, along with 60-minutes of battery back-up for primary or standby applications, “or it can just be the coolest-ever CDI.” “If it’s round and in their panel, pilots can likely replace it with the GI 275 to receive modern flight display features and benefits in a powerful, yet compact touchscreen flight instrument,” said Wolf. GI 275 has a standard 3.125-inch form factor and rear-mount design that minimises panel modification. It has a bright, high-resolution touchscreen display and wide viewing angle, while a dual concentric knob allows pilots to access a variety of key functions within the flight instrument, such as adjustments to the baro setting or the airspeed bug. Garmin suggests aircraft owners can start with a single GI 275 and add up to a total of six in a single panel. When installed as a primary attitude indicator, the GI 275 offers improved reliability, potential weight savings and reduced maintenance compared to vacuum-driven AIs. Pilots can also view altitude, airspeed and heading on the
If used as an engine information display, the GI 275 is capable of interfacing with single-engine and multi-engine normally aspirated or turbocharged aircraft with select powerplants, including Lycoming and Continental 4/6-cylinder engines. When the GI 275 replaces mechanical gauges and is configured as primary for engine information, the GI 275 can display RPM, manifold pressure, oil pressure and temperature, cylinder head temperature (CHT), exhaust gas temperature (EGT), turbine inlet temperature (TIT), fuel flow, fuel quantity, fuel pressure, volts and amps. Lean assist functionality is also available so pilots can choose to operate rich of peak or lean of peak. The GI 275 is also capable of displaying additional page information including a multifunction display (MFD) with a moving map, and when interfaced to a GTX 345 or GNX 375, traffic information can be displayed on the dedicated traffic page or moving map. Garmin’s TargetTrend relative motion technology and pop-up traffic alerts further enhance situational awareness, says the company, which adds the unit can also interface with traffic systems such as TCAS. Built-in Wi-Fi enables wireless transfer of aviation databases to the GI 275, while pilots can also transfer databases to the GI 275 using a USB flash drive and the USB charger. Databases can also be synced among multiple GI 275 flight instruments in a single cockpit. When configured to display engine information, the GI 275 can wirelessly send engine data to display within the Garmin Pilot app on Apple mobile devices. This data is also automatically synced and can also be viewed on the flyGarmin website. Wireless flight plan transfer via Bluetooth is available when the GI 275 is paired with a GPS 175, GNC 355 or GNX 375. Garmin has confirmed that the GI 275 available and already approved for installation in over 1,000 single-engine and multi-engine aircraft models.

GATS! Coming Soon to a Country Near You The Global Aircraft Trading System, or GATS, is an initiative stemming from one of the most successful multi-country treaties. The Cape Town Treaty, signed in 2001, set up uniform rules and regulations to help facilitate asset-based financing and leasing of aviation equipment worldwide. As discussed in our previous blog, The History behind the International Registry (another initiative of Cape Town), the treaty established a set of laws more favorable to lenders that would expand international financing opportunities and open doors for new market entrants around the globe. The Aviation Working Group (AWG) was a central participant in this process as a not-for-profit legal entity contributing to the development of policies, laws and regulations that advance international aviation financing and leasing. Their latest project, coming soon to a country near you, is GATS, which specifically aims to “increase the transparency of and confidence in aircraft trading, and further protect rights, by introducing a secure, live and searchable electronic ledger displaying details of ownership and security interests.” Both the International Registry and the Global Aircraft Trading System are designed to modernize and facilitate, via electronic registries, the efficient and secure trading and financing of aircraft equipment, while protecting the rights of all parties. GATS, however, focuses on “reducing the burdens on lessees, lessors and financiers” and even more so, protecting the lessee’s rights. Out of necessity, the trading and financing of aircraft equipment subject to leases continues to grow in the aviation industry. Likewise, the need for trusts. You can read more about this in our blog, Why an Aircraft Should be Registered in Trust. Subsequently, the need for more efficient lease and trust transactions has become increasingly important, especially in
commercial aviation where ownership interests in leased collateral changes hands on a frequent basis. Every time the ownership changes, the lease between lessor and lessee must also change, creating a heavy burden on the lessees. One airline employee once complained that they had to alter a lease agreement 11 times in 2 years. Placing aircraft in trust transfers the burden of these ownership changes to an owner trustee, allowing lessees to focus on operating their airlines. While the benefits of GATS can clearly be seen in the commercial airline realm, the benefits to the business and general aviation sector remain to be seen. The fully electronic system will be voluntary and open to all industry participants. With e-signatures, e-delivery of documents and use of a secure e-ledger to record transactions, the platform will detail the trust history of aircraft that are registered on GATS. The rights of lessees will be specifically protected by prohibiting transfers unless agreed upon conditions in favor of the lessee have been met. GATS will also further “reinforce ‘no increased obligations’ lease provisions in favor of lessees”. At first, any GATS trust will be formed in Ireland, Singapore or the U.S., and subject to the applicable jurisdiction for the creation and transfer of security interests. Available jurisdictions may expand in the future. The GATS platform for electronic trading is practically here. The static URL was activated on December 10, 2019, and from March 1st to 31st a ‘simulated transaction period’ will be open. The full launch is targeted for April 1, 2020. With the FAA issuing an opinion on January 22nd concluding that “the GATS transitional trust documents comply with applicable federal law and will support aircraft registration in the name of a GATS trustee”, it appears that GATS is ready for takeoff.
Stay tuned for more GATS developments

AERO Friedrichshafen: April 1 - 4, 2020 The Global Show for General Aviation
AERO 2020 to take flight with many debuts Friedrichshafen – On April 1 of this year, the 28th AERO will be lifting off with a total of 700 exhibitors from 38 countries and a range of products and services that is even more extensive than in previous years. Ultralight aircraft, motor gliders, touring planes, helicopters, and business jets will be on display in Friedrichshafen. In addition, civil drones and electric flying taxis are playing an increasing role in aviation. The e-flight-expo range will also be even wider in 2020. Special exhibitions such as Avionics Avenue, Engine Area, Be a Pilot and Aerodrones/UAS Expo will be part of the fair again this year. Helicopters of all sizes and drive types will be found in the Helicopter Hangar, and the Flight Simulator Area will again be located on Lake Constance. Immediately prior to the AERO, the two-day Lindbergh E-flight Rally for electric aircraft will take place for the first time. The participating electric ultralight trikes, as well as three-axle and hybrid aircraft, will then be presented on the exhibition grounds. Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann, Roland Bosch as “Head of AERO,” and project manager Tobias Bretzel emphasise that the opportunities at this stage of the economic cycle remain encouraging for general aviation. In any case, AERO 2020 ensures that every aviation enthusiast will be able to find the aircraft that fits their requirements. The exhibited aircraft will include drones, ultralight aircraft, helicopters, gyrocopters, single- and multi-engine aircraft with piston engines, turboprops, or business jets, as well as the first electric flying taxis. New propulsion systems, intelligent avionics, and services and accessories relating to all aspects of flying will be the focus of attention at the AERO, along with pilot training and career opportunities in general aviation. Powered Aircraft Traditionally, the complete range of all established manufacturers can be seen at Lake Constance, from piston-powered single-engine or twin-engine planes to aircraft with propeller turbines. This enormous variety has formed the backbone of general aviation for decades. The prevailing high demand for training aircraft is giving an additional boost to aircraft manufacturers. In addition, the latest model years of proven Echo class machines, as well as several aircraft never before exhibited at the fair, will be on display. One of these planes is a world premiere: a German-Chinese joint venture is expected to be presenting its new turboprop amphibious flying boat at the AERO. Ultralight aircraft today includes a huge range of gliders, motorised aircraft, flying boats, gyrocopters, and now also helicopters. Several new aircraft, from a classic side-by-side training machine to a 300 km/h tandem seater, will be presented at Lake Constance, with inexpensive 120 kg machines in the ultralight range also being exhibited for the first time. With simple motorisation and just one seat, ultralights are inexpensive to acquire and maintain and offer flying enjoyment in its original form. For new two-seater ultralight aircraft, the increase throughout Europe in the maximum possible take-off weight from 472 to 600 kg also ensures greater attractiveness and flexibility in terms of payload. Numerous new 600 kg models as well as classic 472 kg machines will be presented at the AERO, including aircraft and gyrocopters from Russian manufacturers. Several companies will be presenting options for retrofitting their UL aircraft to take advantage of the new 600 kg take-off weight. Business Aviation Business Aviation has developed into one of the focal points of the AERO. Multiengine piston aircraft, especially turboprops and jets, form its core. Since EASA’s approval decision three years ago, which allowed turbine singles to provide commercial air transport also according to instrument flight rules, manufacturers of these single-engine aircraft with propeller turbines have been enjoying increasing demand. Conventional turboprop twins will also be able to be spotted
36 GA BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2020
on Lake Constance. For manufacturers of business jets, at present there are also signs of a healthy economic trend, as demonstrated by the latest positive figures from autumn 2019 provided by the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). The entire range of business aviation, from turbine singles to multiengine jets, will be on display at the AERO in the new Business Aviation Resale Area.
e-flight-expo The 11th edition of the e-flight-expo will take place in 2020. Today, more and more aircraft are equipped with an electric or hybrid drive. In view of the many problems related to CO2 emissions, large corporations and numerous start-ups are also offering solutions through the development of electric flight projects, including numerous aircraft with vertical take-off capabilities. For example, one of the industry giants in the field of aircraft propulsion systems will be represented for the first time at the AERO with its new “Electric Propulsion” division. Since 2018, electrically powered taxi drones have been in test operation, and flights of prototypes from German manufacturers are already taking place with manned aircraft. More and more car manufacturers will be participating in urban air mobility projects in 2020. Several flying taxis are already being flown in test operation. Several of them will also be on display on Lake Constance. Lindbergh E-flight Rally The Lindbergh E-flight Rally, taking place right before the AERO in Friedrichshafen for the first time, underscores the steady increase in the importance of electric flight within aviation. Aerodrones/UAS Expo: Civilian aircraft drones are playing an increasingly important role in aviation, whether they are used for aerial photography, surveillance or special tasks. This is reflected by the steady growth in participation in the special exhibition Aerodrones/UAS Expo, which on the first two days of the fair is dealing in particular with the topic of “Drones in Use by Security Agencies and Organisations.” Both manned and

unmanned aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art sensor and measurement technology will be exhibited at the AERO. On the Inflight Airfield for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), these can also be experienced live. The Engine Area has now become one of the cornerstones of the AERO: This special exhibition shows modern aircraft engines and motors from a wide variety of manufacturers. This can involve electric, combustion and hybrid propulsion systems but also includes maintenance and engine/motor management as well as alternative and sustainable fuels. The special exhibition Avionics Avenue has also been an established part of the trade show for years. Its programme and agenda relates to collision warning, flight planning, communication, flight control and navigation. The fact that a major avionics manufacturer is offering an autoland system for a turboprop as well as a business jet for the first time this year is already causing a stir in the industry. Many of the new devices can be tried out directly at the fair. For the third time, the Flight Simulator Area will have a presence at the AERO. It will include pilot training as well as offers for everyone interested in piloting an airplane or helicopter, which can be tried out live at numerous exhibitor stands. The Flight Simulator Area offers experienced VFR or IFR pilots training opportunities for further development as well as the opportunity to pilot a wide range of aircraft on a simulator. Rotary wing aircraft will again have their own hall in the Helicopter Hangar. Helicopters with piston engines or turbines from the areas of training, air rescue, aerial work and police duties will be on display. Since 2019, the first ultralight helicopters for training purposes have made it both easier and less expensive for prospective helicopter pilots to get a start. The search for young pilots With “Be a Pilot 2020,” this special exhibition is continuing its successful run. Here, pilots and those interested in flight training can come together at an opportune point in time: At the moment, pilots for steadily growing airline fleets are being sought in many parts of the world. The current growth in demand for training aircraft from flight schools underscores this trend. “Be a
pilot” provides information and offers from both flight schools and institutes of higher education as well as public authorities and associations.vehicles will also be taking part here with its AERODrones Symposium. AERO Conferences The agenda of the AERO Conferences will include more than 200 presentations, conferences and workshops on aviation topics in 2020. Interest groups such as AOPA, certification authorities such as EASA and FAA, and the manufacturers associations GAMA and LAMA will be present. At the AERO Conferences, experts from the entire spectrum of general aviation will provide information and discuss current aviation topics. The umbrella organisation for unmanned aerial vehicles will also be taking part here with its AERODrones Symposium. Flying to the AERO: New “aeroPs” app for payment Anyone traveling to the AERO in Friedrichshafen with their own aircraft needs a PPR slot. Starting at 9 am local time on March 18, 2020, you can request one on-line by visiting www.bodensee-airport.eu. Something that is new this year is that the handling can be paid with the “aeroPs” app. Every pilot landing at EDNY will receive one day of free admission to the AERO. An alternative landing option without slot reservations for ultralight aircraft (no Echo class, no touring motorised gliders) is offered by the nearby Markdorf Glider Airfield from April 1 to 4. You can take off and land between 8 am and 7 pm local time. Arrangements have been made for a bus shuttle to the AERO. The AERO will take place in Friedrichshafen from April 1 to 4, 2020. ■ More information is available at www.aero-expo.com

LOCKHEED INDAGO
An Overview of Unmanned Multi-Mission Aviation In the Overview of Manned Multi-Mission Aviation (see GA Buyer February edition) we elaborated on what Multi-Mission operations are, the types of Multi-Mission aircraft operations, and the benefits manned aircraft bring to this aviation sector.
Here, we’ll discuss the major role Unmanned aircraft have in the Multi-Mission aviation sector – and specifically, the roles, platforms, systems, and benefits unmanned aircraft provide.
What are Multi-Mission Unmanned Aircraft Missions, Platforms and Systems?
There are many different types of applications or services that fall under this aviation sector. Unmanned aircraft have and are currently complementing or expanding the availability of these services from the air.
Why are Unmanned Aircraft Part of Multi-Mission Aviation?
Unmanned aircraft are used for multi-mission operations because they’re no different than manned aircraft when it comes to specific services like aerial surveying, photography, advertising, force protection, and many more.
• Multi-Mission operations are civil aircraft used for specialized services outside of General Aviation and commercial air transport operations; • An aircraft is an airplane, helicopter, or other machine capable of flight; • Unmanned aircraft are machines capable of flight with the technical means to provide utility or service. Therefore, over the last 20 years unmanned aircraft have become active in the Multi-Mission domains of Commercial, Public Safety, and Defense, providing specialized services in industries such as agriculture, construction, media, recreation, law enforcement, medical, training, and more. Civil aviation authorities around the world have recognized the importance of unmanned aircraft in everyday life, regulating such operations to normalize this innovative technology concerning safety and security in support of society.
What Types of Unmanned Aircraft are Used for Multi-Mission Operations?
The types of unmanned aircraft operated, especially in the Multi-Mission sector, are fixed-wing, rotor, and Lighter-ThanAir (Airships/Blimps) with heavy use in the category of small to medium size platforms.
40 AERIAL WORK EUROPE MARCH 2020
Like manned Multi-Mission aircraft, the following are a few examples of currently established roles unmanned aircraft have entered and continue to expand in:
Civil (Commercial Providers): Monitoring & Inspecting
INSITU SCANEAGLE
Unmanned aircraft and the technology associated with them bring the same flight capabilities, functionality and reliability as manned. Compared to manned aircraft, unmanned aircraft have the same engineering aspects of flight regarding airframe structure, propulsion and avionics. The main difference is the replacement of humans in the flight experience with sensors, GPS, autonomous flight control management systems, and servo actuators. Besides unmanned aircraft having the means to fly themselves, today’s platforms can carry and control various utility payloads, systems and equipment. When it comes to Multi-Mission operations this is essential, making unmanned aircraft a new and effective capability for this aviation sector.
Aerial monitoring and inspecting operations are a method of making visual or remote-sensor assessments of transmission and distribution towers, bridges, buildings, and pipelines; or for damage assessment. The primary end-users for this type of application or service are the engineering, construction, utility, insurance and energy industries. Because unmanned aircraft size and design can vary from micro to large high-altitude long endurance platforms, their implementation and application can vary to serve specific needs. For example, if an end-user wants to inspect the condition of a very confined, but open space that could be hazardous for humans to inspect, a small or micro unmanned platform with sense-and-avoid and anti-collision capabilities can be deployed. The main classes of drones used are multi-rotor, fixed-wing, single-rotor helicopters, hybrid, and Lighter Than Air (LTA) designs. The class of unmanned aircraft utilized in aerial monitoring and inspecting can vary, based on the type of sensors, propulsion, endurance and autonomy systems required. Generally, common aircraft in everyday operations for this
Manned MMA March.qxp_Layout 1 07/02/2020 15:25 Page 2
specific industry sector are multi- and single-rotor helicopters and, in some cases, fixed wing platforms. The preferred aircraft are multi-rotors like the DJI Inspire, Matrice Enterprise Drones, Intel/AscTec Falcon 8, Lockheed Indago 2 and the Aeryon Skyranger. Some of the standard Aerial Monitoring and Inspection systems (in addition to the primary flight operating systems) for these platforms are: • Sensors (Aerial zoom and thermal cameras, Electro-Optical Infra-Red (EO/IR), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Gas detectors); • Gyro-Stabilized Mounts; • Flight Management, Tracking and Data Processing Software (3D Mapping, etc.); and • Data recorders.
Public Safety (Commercial & Public Providers): Police Surveillance/Investigation
In the field of law enforcement operations, aerial police surveillance and investigation (and beyond routine aerial patrol) is the use of aircraft in support of routine criminal activity monitoring and forensic data collection. Law enforcement organizations commonly use aircraft for crash reconstruction, crime scene processing, general investigations, tactical reconnaissance and crowd monitoring. Like the commercial aerial monitoring and inspecting sector, the preferred aircraft for the public safety sector tend to be the multi-rotor craft. The most used aircraft are small and light-size multi-rotors, including the DJI Inspire, DJI Matrice Enterprise Drones, Lockheed Indago 2 and the Aeryon Skyranger. Other types of platforms that are still on the fringe but growing in use are fixed-wing, Vertical-Take-Off-Land (VTOL) and LTAs (airships/blimps) for wide area persistence surveillance of criminal activity, or persistent monitoring of large crowds. Just as an example, Sensefly eBee (fixed-wing), Birdseyeview FireFLY6 Pro (VTOL) and WASP Aerostat (LTA) provide platforms that satisfy this role. Common or ancillary types of systems and equipment integrated or utilized onboard a Police surveillance and investigation aircraft include: • Sensors (aerial zoom and thermal cameras, Electro-Optical Infrared (EO/IR), Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Gas detectors); • Gyro-Stabilized Mounts; • Flight Management, Tracking and Data Processing Software (3D Mapping, Augmented Reality, etc.); • Ground base tether systems; • Loudspeakers; and • Searchlights;
Defense (Commercial Providers in Support of Public Contracts): Persistent Surveillance and Force Protection Persistent surveillance emphasizes the ability of collection systems to linger on demand in an area to detect, locate, characterize, identify, track and target in near or real-time.
Along with this, Force protection is the operational effort to prevent or mitigate hostile actions against military and civilian personnel, resources, facilities and critical information. Because of the dull, dirty, and dangerous aspect of this mission, unmanned Multi-Mission operations have filled a critical need to dwell 24/7 protecting military personal and facilities in recent conflicts and monitoring geo-political porous borders and shipping lanes around the world. The preferred aircraft for this industry sector are fixed-wing, LTA (airships/blimps), and single rotor helicopter platforms. The commonly used platforms are fixed-wing and LTA like the Insitu ScanEagle (fixed-wing), and TCOM Tactical Class aerostat systems (LTA). In the category of single rotor helicopters, you’ll see platforms like the Schiebel Camcopter S-100 and UMS SKELDAR V-200 employed. Some of the systems integrated or utilized onboard Persistent Surveillance and Force Protection aircraft are, in many ways, the same systems used for Intelligent, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations but with a different intent. These include: • Sensors and Communication Receivers (Electro-Optical Infra-Red (EO/IR); • Full Motion Video (FMV); • LiDAR; • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR); • Hyperspectral Imagery (HSI); • Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) Systems; • Maritime Patrol Surface Search Radar; • Recorders; • Designators; • Mission Management Software/Hardware; • Ground Control Stations and Launch & Recovery systems; • LOS/BLOS Air-to-Air/Air-to-Ground Radios; • Electronic Support Measures/Countermeasure systems; and • Ground tethered systems
2) They’re Scalable (Technically Flexible, Effective & Interoperable): Because of this innovative spirit, the technology associated with Multi-Mission unmanned aircraft is scalable regarding their size, interoperability and cost per unit compared to systems 30 years ago. This scalability allows for quicker adjustment of systems with changing market needs. Overall, this makes it easier to configure and adapt different technologies together to match the client’s requirements with the right platform, hardware or software. 3) More Options (Alternative Planning, Purchasing & Sustainment Choices): With a wide spectrum of unmanned Multi-Mission technology and product availability, there are more options to turnkey the right solution for the right job. Besides a manned aircraft option, the Multi-Mission sector can now provide an unmanned aircraft with its specialized capabilities. For example, an unmanned aircraft could fill the need for a low, slow and narrow focused requirement while a manned aircraft can provide a high, fast and wide area operating solution. The unmanned aircraft sector has inspired or allowed the industry to develop many usable and affordable products, which makes it easier to plan, purchase and sustain aircraft to include all the ancillary systems and equipment associated with running a Multi-Mission operation. 4) More Opportunities (New Applications & Services in the Sector): The positive force multiplier effects of unmanned innovation, scalable technology, and more product options have opened new markets that didn’t exist before, or expanded operations and services within traditional end-user industries (i.e. agriculture, land management and public safety). Consequently, there are more opportunities for stakeholders in Multi-Mission aviation to establish, expand or diversify their tradecraft.
What are the Benefits of Multi-Mission Unmanned Aircraft?
What is the Future for Unmanned Multi-Mission Operations? The future for unmanned Multi-Mission operations is positive and getting better. If you scan all the market reports that are published yearly, the potential market value for this sector runs in the billons.
The benefits that they bring challenges old thinking, simplifying and enlarging the scope and importance of MultiMission operations. The specific benefits unmanned operations bring to the third pillar of aviation are:
Without question, we are going out of our way to entertain the idea of unmanned aircraft becoming an everyday part of life. However, just like manned aviation in the twentieth century, unmanned aviation has its challenges to overcome before it’s truly accepted in society. The top hurdles facing unmanned operations today include:
1) Innovative Catalyst (Challenging Others): Since the expansion of unmanned technology in aviation, the innovative spirit and thinking that came with it have spurred new and improved capabilities in the Multi-Mission arena
• • • •
Even the manned Multi-Mission aircraft have benefited by leveraging the spin-off research efforts of developing new unmanned aircraft construction materials, methods and designs, avionics, power sources, sensors and more.
Once these are overcome, both the unmanned aircraft and the Multi-Mission sectors can maximize their potential. Ultimately, unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft operations will share the same high expectations manned aviation enjoys today.
Unmanned aircraft, and operations in Multi-Mission aviation have been a positive ‘Force Multiplier’.
The continuing synergy of this unmanned technology phenomenon has/will continue to challenge all stakeholders wanting to make a difference, expand their customer base and brand their services in the Multi-Mission arena.
SCHIEBEL CAMCOPTER

AIRBUS H125 Upgrades boost aerial work credentials
Airbus Helicopters’ powerful and versatile H125 single-engine helicopter is an industry fixture in the aerial work sector worldwide. Now this remarkable aircraft is even more attractive to its vast range of operators following the announcement at Heli Expo of a substantial performance increase as well as a redesigned cockpit to improve visibility and situational awareness.
VEMD is an Airbus development for the management and control of the primary aircraft and engine parameters. It reduces pilot workload and fosters a heads-up approach to flying, giving the pilot more time to focus on the external environment thanks to a quick and easy instrument scan, excellent visibility and optimised ergonomics.
The performance gain is achieved by making full use of the available power from the helicopter’s Safran Arriel 2D turboshaft engine. Certifying the additional output will mean that external and internal payloads will increase by up to 140kg (308lb) at higher density altitudes, and the hover ceiling out of ground effect (OGE) will be improved by more than 1,500ft – up to 12,600ft.
The H125 will also now provide increased operational simplicity thanks to new options that enhance visibility and pilot awareness. A more compact and simplified instrument panel with its surface area reduced by 40% incorporates a Garmin G500H TXI touch screen. A remote First Limit Indicator (FLI) solution developed by Californiabased AKV Inc enables the display of the main VEMD engine parameters on a smartphone or a tablet via a Bluetooth connection, while keeping external loads in sight.
When the H125 is equipped with the BLR FastFin tail rotor enhancement and stability system, the total gain is up to 190 kg (419lb) of external and internal load lifting capabilities and the hover ceiling OGE rises by 2,300ft - up to 13,400ft - compared to the current H125 performance. Use of the extra power is due for certification this summer and will be included as a standard feature on all new-build H125s with no price increase. A retrofit solution will be available by the end of this year for all H125s equipped with the Vehicle and Engine Multifunction Display (VEMD) and will consist of only a simple VEMD software upgrade.
42 AERIAL WORK EUROPE MARCH 2020
Two additional upper windows are provided to greatly improve upward visibility and the Maximum Pilot View Kit (MPVK), provided by Swiss Rotors Services, boosts the precision and safety of aerial work operations by considerably increasing the downward field of view of pilots. Airbus Helicopters Head of the Intermediate Single Programme, Axel Aloccio, said: “I am very happy to be presenting these new H125 features, which are the result of a continuous dialogue with our customers.
airbus.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 07/02/2020 15:39 Page 2
“The extra power offered by the H125 raises the bar within the single-engine helicopter market to reach levels never attained up to now by such platforms and confirms the superiority of the H125 in terms of payload and value for money. And our new options for the aerial work market segment will not only simplify our customer’s daily missions, but more importantly, will further increase the safety of these very demanding operations.” With more than 4,000 helicopters in service with about 1,500 global customers, the H125 continues to lead the single-engine helicopter market thanks to its high performance and multi-mission capacity. In the last 10 years 630 H125s have been delivered for aerial work, representing a 74% market share. There are currently about 1,600 H125/AS350 helicopters dedicated to aerial work operations, having accumulated more than 10.6 million flight hours. The H125 is only the lightest of the Airbus Helicopters range of aircraft offered in the aerial work sector for multiple roles. In the air crane role for example the H125 currently can carry up to 1,500kg in a cargo sling, but at the heavier end the H225 can take up to 4,750kg, allowing safe carriage of heavy loads in hostile or inaccessible areas. For the growing offshore windpower support task, helicopters are increasingly being used as wind farms are located further out to sea. They offer greater speed and comfort compared to surface
vessels, particularly in rough sea conditions. The new H160 and H175 are ideal for passenger transport to and from the platforms, but the H135, H145, Dauphin and Super Puma are all used for construction, repair, and inspection crews as well as search and rescue. Airbus helicopters are equally at home onshore in support of electrical grids around the world. In France AIRTELIS operates the H225 for maintenance and construction work on high-voltage power lines while in Italy, grid operator Terna flies two H125s on surveillance and maintenance missions along more than 63,500km of lines. The H125 is also the helicopter of choice in the global electronic newsgathering (ENG) world in which its low vibration levels support professional filming requirements and its large cabin allows the carriage of the full complement of news equipment such as gyrostabilised cameras, downlink transmission systems, and radio communications. In Japan, where ENG is widespread, the H135 and AS365 Dauphin are also used in the role and collectively Airbus Helicopters provides some 70% of the national fleet.

Brexit!
Time to update you on our plans! Following the UK General Election in December 2019, the dust has settled a little and things are becoming clearer. We are now able to clarify where we at Adams Aviation are, and what we have in place, to ensure that we are ready for “Brexit and able to continue to serve our partners across Europe with no disruption.
Preparation
HIGH PERFORMANCE STARTS WITH THE RIGHT PARTS
We have had a dedicated in-house Brexit task force in place working hard for over 3 years making preparations for all eventualities. It is fair to say that the process has been something of a rollercoaster with different political groups appearing to have the upper hand at different times. Most of any uncertainty now seems to be about how close a relationship the UK can have with the EU from 2021 onwards. We all hope that it will be as close as possible and have plans in place to ensure uninterrupted business, both immediately and for as long as necessary.
APS has designed a high quality brake disc that has established itself as the benchmark among aircraft brake discs. A true blend of strength and durability. CNC machined from a rigid one piece design these brakes are built to provide unparalleled performance. Heat treated to give it the appearance, with our name proudly engraved on the side; APS offers the ultimate in braking performance.

As things stand: NOTHING CHANGES! The approved transition period sees us through until the end of 2020 and so no immediate changes are necessary.
Going forward From 2021, we hope that the UK and EU will have negotiated continuing unfettered access to the EU Single Market. Once the transition period is over, or if for any reason it fails to come into effect, we will be using a subsidiary in mainland Europe to import into the EU, clear customs, pay any VAT on imports and then invoice our customers so that you DO NOT experience ANY delays, ANY cost increases or ANY additional bureaucracy. Our new link with Pattonair with its worldwide presence also gives us further options should they be needed. Rest assured that, no matter what happens, our focus and top priority will always be to the service that we give to all of our business partners. We aim to make your interactions with us as easy and pleasurable as possible!

The European Helicopter Association (EHA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have launched a new annual trade show and conference. The first staging of “European Rotors” will take place 10-12 November 2020 in Cologne, Germany.

The event is being organised in partnership with Messe Friedrichshafen, which organises Aero Friedrichshafen, Europe’s leading general aviation event that takes place in April each year. European Rotors show director Frank Liemandt said the intention is to keep the new event in Cologne for 2-3 years and then move it to various locations around Europe in following years.
The show will include an indoor static display of aircraft and there will be an arrangement whereby helicopters can be moved to the downtown Koelnmesse convention centre from nearby Dusseldorf Airport. Members of the public will be allowed to come to the event, with admission being free on Day 3 of the event (Thursday). David Solar, head of EASA’s VTOL department, stated: “The event is the perfect opportunity to talk about safety with the whole community, and the timing is right because we have recently launched our new safety road map.” The conference programme will include EASA’s annual Rotorcraft Symposium, which has in previous years been held at its headquarters in Cologne. “This is the first time there has been a common rotorcraft and VTOL event that is fully supported by all EHA members in partnership with EASA,” said Peter Möller, chairman of EHA. “It is the one show organised by the industry for the whole industry and with participation by the regulator.”

Monaco-based Blueberry Aviation said recently that it had reached the milestone of 400 helicopter transactions, representing more than US$1 billion total asset value, since it was formed in 2003. It has also reached 150 commercial aircraft transactions, totalling US$3.3 billion in value. In 2019 Blueberry Aviation completed 28 helicopter transactions covering all major helicopter brands, mission types and regions. François Gautier, Blueberry Aviation’s founder, president and CEO, commented: “We believe used equipment is the key to operators regaining profitability in a difficult economic environment, and Blueberry Aviation is keen to support its customers to acquire used aircraft, in particular by sourcing financing solutions.” The company claims it has achieved “consistent results in spite of a market that remains tense.” “I am extremely proud we have reached this incredible result of 400 helicopter transactions,” said Gautier. “This is a great opportunity to thank our longstanding helicopter customers for their continued trust and loyalty, and my

“Kopter’s SH09, a new single engine helicopter, is a perfect fit for Leonardo’s state of the art product range offering opportunities for future technological developments.” It also noted that the Swiss company’s competencies will “boost future developments towards more disruptive technologies, mission capabilities and performances, including innovative hybrid/electrical propulsion solutions.” Leonardo confirmed that the acquisition replaces the planned investment aimed at the development of a new single-engine helicopter. “Within the Helicopter Division of Leonardo, Kopter will act as an autonomous legal entity and competence center working in coordination with us,” said the Italian company.

Gian Piero Cutillo, managing director Leonardo Helicopters, said: “We are proud to welcome this innovative company as an integral part of our world-leading helicopter business. It complements perfectly our existing product portfolio adding a promising rotorcraft that will greatly benefit from our industrial know-how, service and training experience and commercial network.” Marina Groenberg, CEO of Lynwood, said: “Lynwood is very proud to have strongly supported the development of Kopter and its SH09 programme over the past ten years. It is now the right time for Leonardo to take over as they are a perfect match for Kopter at this stage of development.” Kopter’s CEO Andreas Loewenstein added: “Kopter is very excited to have won with Leonardo a solid industrial investor. Within Leonardo, we get the support to finalise our development on various fronts while keeping the ability to remain the agile single-engine pioneer that we are.” Swiss-based Kopter has been operating since 2009, originally designated Marenco SwissHelicopter and rebranded in 2018 as Kopter Group AG.
