Industry Sends Out ADS-B Reminder The US NBAA and the FAA have issued a reminder to the US business aviation community that they are required to install ADS-B Out equipment on their aircraft by 1st January 2020. A similar EASA mandate comes into force in Europe in June 2020. In each case it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t include uncontrolled or all controlled airspace so will mainly affect commercial operators. A looming problem could be that MRO shops have backlogs of customers but that many have not planned their upgrades yet. In Europe, Commission Regulation (EU) No 1207/2011, of 22 November 2011, stipulates that, from 7 June 2020, all aircraft with certificates of airworthiness issued on or after 8th January 2015 that weigh more than 5,700 kg, or have a maximum cruise speed greater than 250 knots, will need to be equipped with ADS-B capabilities to be operated IFR in European airspace. The U.S. requirements do not filter our smaller aircraft or those flying VFR. www.nbaa.org

The CAA describes EC as â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the most important airspace modernisation initiatives, because of its potential to unlock safety benefits and save lives by reducing the likelihood of infringements and mid-air collisions.â&#x20AC;? The CAA states: â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are not proposing an immediate general mandate to require all airspace users to be fully EC compliant. Instead we think a rolling programme of highly focused, location-specific mandates deployed over the next few years can be used to target areas with the greatest potential to deliver benefits.â&#x20AC;?
In describing the â&#x20AC;&#x153;current situation,â&#x20AC;? it recognised there has already been work in the UK to develop EC â&#x20AC;&#x153;which we are now building onâ&#x20AC;? and an EC Working Group has â&#x20AC;&#x153;enabled stakeholders to share their goals and requirements to help develop future proposals.â&#x20AC;? The CAA noted that new lower power / lower cost EC devices are available for airborne carriage, and that Traffic Data Displays (TDDs) that present the outputs of EC devices to air traffic units without primary or secondary surveillance radars (SSR) â&#x20AC;&#x153;are being trialed with some success.â&#x20AC;? The CAA said that the voluntary adoption by some of EC solutions had delivered benefits but â&#x20AC;&#x153;has not led to fully interoperable solutions or the 100% adoption that is essential to maximise the benefits. XTI Plans First Flight of TriFan 600 XTI Aircraft has fitted new electric motors in its 65% scale, proof-of-concept TriFan 600 and was hoping to fly the aircraft for the first time in March, according to Robert LaBelle, CEO of the Denver-based company. The TriFan 600 is a six-seat hybrid-electric VTOL that is due to enter production in early 2023, priced at $6.5 million a copy. XTI says 76 TriFan 600s are now on order, which it says represents $494 million in gross revenues. The company says the TriFan 600 will fly at 300 knots with a range of 1,200 miles, equivalent to a business turboprop, while also being able to take off and land vertically. www.xtiaircraft.com
Sikorsky Latest to Research UAM
ERAU: Urban Air Vehicles Are Coming
With urban mobility prospects firing the imaginations of so many would-be entrepreneurs, Sikorsky has become the latest major aerospace company to outline its efforts.
Researchers at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) and specifically its Eagle Flight Research Center have said urban mobility vehicles will â&#x20AC;&#x153;transform what airplanes look likeâ&#x20AC;? over the next few years.
The US helicopter manufacturer suggests that congested cities means the air will become the obvious solution with helicopters the obvious answer, but the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research efforts are aimed at identifying whether it too could enter the urban mobility sector.
Dr. Richard Anderson, the centreâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s director, said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Airplanes are not going to look like theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve looked for the past 115 years.â&#x20AC;? He sees hybrid-electric propulsion as the best near-term source of propulsion.
It has developed the Sikorsky Autonomy Research Aircraft (SARA), which is a modified Sikorsky S-76B that now acts as an â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;optionally piloted vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; demonstrator. The company has also been working on electric propulsion linked to its rapid prototyping program, Project Firefly.
Echoing the thoughts of many, he suggested vehicles would be used for cargo delivery initially. ERAU students created the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first piston hybrid aircraft, the Eco Eagle. www.erau.edu

Honeywell Joins eVTOL Throng With the eVTOL fledgling market turning heads in the aviation world and beyond, Honeywell Aerospace turned up at Heli-Expo in Atlanta in March to display for the first time a hybrid-electric engine suited to the task â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an electrified version of its 1,100-shaft horsepower HTS900 gas turbine engine, used by Kopterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new SH09 helicopter.
Meanwhile at Heli-Expo in Atlanta in March, the company said S-92 operators flying to North Sea oil rigs can receive real-time meteorological information from helidecks via its iFly Sikorsky app. The service is being facilitated by MM Aviation of Norway. NASA has selected the Tecnam P2006T twin for its LEAPtech initiative, with the aim of developing safer, more energy efficient, lower operating cost and greener general aviation aircraft.
The hybrid engine, with batteries, will produce 30 to 50 percent fewer carbon emissions than the traditional HTS900 engine, estimates Honeywell.
Maxwell will be the first all-electric X-plane and will be flown to validate and demonstrate the benefits that distributed electric propulsion may yield for the future of aviation.
XTIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s TriFan 600 will be the first application airframe, while Honeywell is looking beyond to pure electric and fuel cell technology.

Daher has congratulated the success of two TBM pilot-owners – Dierk Reuter and Phil Bozek – who set a new world speed record between New York and Paris aboard a TBM turboprop aircraft.
The additional fuel increased the TBM 930’s 7,398-lb. maximum certified takeoff weight to 9,200 lbs., which required an approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA’s authorization was issued just a few days before the flight, which took off from Westchester County Airport at midnight on March 8.
Flying the TBM 930 owned by Reuter, they crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 8 hours and 38 minutes with an average speed of 364 kts, taking off from Westchester County Airport (KHPN) north of New York City, and landing at the historic Le Bourget Airport (LFPB) near Paris – where Charles Lindbergh landed after his pioneering transoceanic crossing.
“My thanks go to those involved in obtaining the airworthiness approval, in particular Joe Robbins from the Rice Lake TBM Service Center, who was instrumental in dealing with the FAA,” Reuter added. The TBM 930 was equipped for satellite communications and inflight tracking using an Iridium GO! device, and with dedicated support from Iridium Communications.
The TBM 930 beat the previous 325.2knot record in the C1e category (turboprop aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight under 13,200 lbs./6,000 kg. as established by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale), which was held since 1985 by the renowned test pilot, Chuck Yeager, on a twinengine airplane.
“After encountering moderate winds during the first part of the trip, we experienced very favorable winds later, which propelled us at astonishing ground speeds up to 458 knots,” explained Bozek.
“You are true trailblazers,” stated Daher CEO Didier Kayat, who greeted them at the airport. “With a spirit of true pioneering aviators, combined with extensive preparations, you demonstrated our TBM aircraft’s capabilities – and beat the previous record by nearly one hour. What a performance!”

They landed at Le Bourget Airport 2:38 p.m. on March 9, having consumed a total of 520 U.S. gallons – near to the previsions – with sufficient fuel remaining to reach an alternate airport if needed. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed at Luxaviation lounge, and its partner of the SkyValet handling agent. Greeting them were Daher executives, as well as Jacques Lemaigre du Breuil, a winner of the Lindbergh trophy who flew a similar New York-Paris trip 25 years ago in a TBM 700 at an average speed of 287 kts.
Planning for the speed record attempt took the crew a year. “It was 366 days ago when we first discussed the potential of attempting an around-theworld speed record with the Daher team, which suggested that we could begin with a transatlantic speed record,” Reuter explained. “After a detailed examination, we found that the current record in the TBM aircraft category was achievable.” The TBM 930 was equipped with a custom-made fuel tank to carry 300 US gallons of jet fuel – bringing the aircraft’s total usable fuel quantity to 600 US gallons, ensuring more than 10 hours of flight time.

Unrivalled Aerial Surveillance Capability Proven Force-Multiplier for Police Worldwide Policing for many countries has become increasingly demanding for many different reasons, including changing crime patterns; organised criminal enterprises operating at local, national and international levels; terrorism; as well as budgetary constraints. To mitigate these limitations, police services globally choose to operate fixed-wing aircraft. The Britten-Norman Defender is seen as a highly versatile, low cost, all weather option. The main addition is an autothrottle, which the company says represents the first time an autothrottle has been used in an aircraft weighing less than 12,500lbs (c5,700kg). Automatic de-icing is also being i ntroduced, along with further ergonomic refinements in the cabin. The TBM 940’s launch was announced during the Safety Seminar meeting of the TBM Owners and Pilots Association (TBMOPA), held in Pompano Beach, Florida in March. Certification of the TBM 940 by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to be received in April. Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president of the Daher Airplane Business Unit said, “This newest TBM family member underscores our firm commitment to constant improvement for the ownership and operational experience with our very fast turboprop aircraft.”
The new autothrottle is fully integrated with the autopilot, and automatically adjusts the aircraft’s speeds based on the preset flight profile – from climb-out to the landing approach. In addition to reducing pilot workload, the autothrottle enables a TBM 940 to be operated to the edge of approved power regimes for its Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-66D turboprop engine, providing optimum performance and efficiency, said Daher. The engine parameters display has also been “simplified through an intuitive single smart gauge.” With the automatic de-icing system, when icing or ice accretion is detected, if the pilot doesn’t take action, the system activates automatically for deicing of the airframe, windshield, propeller and the engine’s particle separator. An amber CAS (Crew Alerting System) message is displayed, advising the pilot to clear the automatic activation and revert to the manual control mode. The TBM 940 retains the same range and handling qualities as the other variants in the family, of which more than 267 examples have now been delivered. www.tbm.aero

Britten-Norman operates an EASA Approved Training Organisation (ATO) for the Islander and Defender aircraft, offering BN2T Type Conversion training under this approval. The aircraft manufacturer is delighted to be providing these services to pilots of the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) in a threeyear long contract, which it was recently awarded after entering a competitive tender process. In the first two quarters of 2019, pilots are undertaking initial Type Rating training on the Defender, a militarised variant of the Rolls Royce B250C powered BN2T turboprop Islander, involving a comprehensive ground school followed by flight instruction and examination. This is to be delivered in three separate phases by Britten-Norman’s Head of Training, Captain V. Jones and Head of
the Groundschool, Theoretical Knowledge Instructor Mr M. Hynett. This training will be delivered at the same time as recurrent training for some of the unit’s more experienced pilots. Further training will be delivered to AFM in 2020 and 2021. Training on the Islander and Defender is part of a suite of air, ground and technical courses available from Britten-Norman, delivered under its EASA Part ATO and Part 147 approvals. As a representative of the OEM, the company also offers a range of exclusive, tailored courses that can be delivered in the UK, Malta or internationally at customer premises. Piaggio Aerospace has responded to operators requesting cheaper brakes than the carbon brakes currently installed on their aircraft, teaming with Parker Aerospace to develop a steel variant for its P.180 twin-engine turboprop. The Villanova dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Abenga, Italy-based manufacturer, which is owned by Mubadala of Abu Dhabi, said steel brakes would maintain performance with lower acquisition and overhaul costs. In late February, a Supplemental Type Certificate approved by the FAA last October was approved by both EASA and Transport Canada, â&#x20AC;&#x153;making this upgrade available for P180 Avanti customers across the globe,â&#x20AC;? said Piaggio. This came under a series of rigorous TSO qualification tests at Parkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s laboratory in Avon, Ohio on an Avanti II equipped with Magnaghi (Evo) landing gear, and on one equipped with the Safran landing gear, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to verify physical fit and the retraction and extension sequence.â&#x20AC;?

German company MT-Propeller has started the test programme for what it says is the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first 9-blade propeller. The testing started on 11th March with MT-Propeller reporting that initial results were â&#x20AC;&#x153;very promising.â&#x20AC;?

Enstrom Helicopter’s updated 280FX light piston single helicopter’s launch customer – the Golf Tango flight training school at Aéroport de Toussus-le-Noble, near Paris – will soon take delivery of its first aircraft, following a sale announced last Ocober and brokered by local dealer, François Gatineau, CEO of Rotor & Aircraft. Being Enstrom’s first sale to a French customer for several years, the Menominee, Michigan-based company’s director of sales and marketing, Dennis Martin, said, “We look forward to the first of many new Enstroms going into France.” The aircraft has some improved features drawing on the design of Enstrom’s turbine 480B helicopter, including its collective system. “For pilots that are training in this, when they go to the turbine aircraft, it’s going to be a real natural transition,” said Martin. Kopter to Build SH09 Plant in Louisiana Kopter Group CEO Andreas Löwenstein announced at the HAI show in early March that the company plans to establish a new production facility for its SH09 helicopter in Lafayette, Louisiana.
This new glass cockpit solution is now also being made available to other Bell 212 operators seeking to update their aircraft, said Bell.
Kopter will lease a 84,700 square-foot facility from the Lafayette Airport Commission. “This future production and support center comes in addition to the already existing and soon to be expanded Kopter sites in Switzerland, and will serve customers throughout the Americas.
Jeff Denomme, president of Alpine Aerotech, noted, “The partnership approach to this upgrade worked very well… [allowing] us to provide a complete upgrade of the cockpit and the aircraft simultaneously, providing a truly modernised aircraft,” The STC includes incorporation of dual, large format Garmin GTN 750 touchscreen navigators. Ageing, heavy Tarsyn gyros are replaced with Rockwell Collins AHC-1000 Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS).

Geosafe will be based on a one-year long flight-test campaign, assessing a number of commercially-available geofencing solutions that could also lead to their use with automated flying craft. Other programme participants include Aeromapper, AirMap, Atechsys and SPH Engineering. Geosafe is supported by SESAR Joint Undertaking under the European Commission’s U-space initiative.
Cobham Aerospace Communications and Inmarsat have launched an SB-Helo X-Stream helicopter satcom for Cobham Aviator SP systems. The new satcom is designed to improve data transmission quality for video imagery, which can be a challenge due to rotor interference.
Larose said the Skytrek tour would be the first circumnavigation by French helicopter pilots, and the first such flight by a twoseat, and French-made, helicopter. The trip will include around 70 legs and Larose and his co-pilot plan to stop off at AirVenture in Oshkosh in late July.
Thales has been selected to manage the Geosafe project, designed to keep drones away from protected perimeters and critical infrastructure such as power plants and airports.
Christian Bardot, head of Thales’ helicopter and UAV avionics business, said, “Thales is playing a leading role in shaping the autonomous world. Together with SESAR JU and the Geosafe partners, we will strengthen the foundations of safe and secure operations, unleashing the potential of this tremendous market.” Some 280 flight tests will be conducted in France, Germany and Latvia over the year in urban and rural areas. Pilot Error: Getting to Know the ‘Dirty Dozen’ Gordon Dupont established his ‘Dirty Dozen’ list to increase awareness of how human factors can contribute towards accidents and incidents. Simon Newbold continues his series with a commentary of the first six issues as they might apply to pilots… 7) Lack of Resources
Sometimes defined as failure to use or acquire the appropriate tools, equipment, information and procedures for the task at hand. If all the parts are not available to complete a task, then there may be pressure to complete that task somehow either by an inappropriate alternative, taking a shortcut or by using old, or incorrect parts. Regardless of the task, resources also include personnel, time, data, tools, skill, experience and knowledge etc. A lack of any of these resources can interfere with one’s ability to complete a task. It may also be the case that the resources available, including support, are of a low quality or inadequate for the task. When the proper resources are available, and to hand, there is a greater chance that we will complete a task more effectively, correctly and efficiently. Therefore, forward planning to acquire, store and locate resources is essential. It will also be necessary to properly maintain the resources that are available; this includes the humans in the organisation as well.
8) Pressure
Sometimes the pressure to “just get the job done” results in human nature finding a solution – but is it safe? Does it follow a procedure? What would happen if the solution went wrong? How many times in the last week have you done something that does not follow a procedure, is unsafe or breaks the rules? How often in the past week have you broken a driving speed limit?” Pressure comes from many sources, just like distraction, and is often caused by pushing for something despite opposing odds, creating a sense of urgency or hassle. Pressure is to be expected when working in the dynamic environment of aviation. However, when the pressure to meet a deadline interferes with our ability to complete tasks correctly, then it has become too much. It is the old argument of Quantity versus Quality; and in aviation we should never knowingly reduce the quality of our work.
A lack of assertiveness is a lack of positive communication of one’s ideas, wants and needs. Being both unable to express our concerns and not allowing others to express their concerns creates ineffective communications and damages teamwork. Unassertive team members can be forced to go with a majority decision, even when they believe it is wrong and dangerous to do so. Assertiveness is a communication and a behavioral style that allows us to express feelings, opinions, concerns, beliefs and needs in a positive and productive manner. When we are assertive, we also invite and allow others to assert themselves without feeling threatened, undermined or that we’ve lost face. Speaking one’s mind assertively is not to be confused with aggression. It is about communicating directly, but honestly and appropriately; giving respect to the opinions and needs of others, but not compromising our own standards. Assertiveness techniques can be learnt and they focus on keeping calm, being rational, using specific examples rather than generalisations, as well as inviting feedback. Most importantly, any criticisms should be directed at actions and their consequences rather than people and their personalities; this allows others to maintain their dignity, and a productive conclusion to be reached.
10) Stress
Stress can be a silent killer. It can build and build and build to breaking point, then suddenly we're overwhelmed to the point we can no longer function or inflict harm on ourselves, friends or family. Just like pressure, know how to recognize the signs and know where to turn for help are vital. It's not a sign of weakness. There are many types of stress. Typically, in the aviation environment there are two distinct types - acute and chronic. Acute stress arises from real-time demands placed on our senses, mental processing and physical body; such as dealing with an emergency, or working under time pressure with inadequate resources.
Pressure can be created by lack of resources, especially time, and, from our own inability to cope with a situation. We may come under direct, or indirect, pressure from a job requirement, from clients and even from colleagues. However, one of the most common sources of pressure is us.
Chronic stress is accumulated and results from long-term demands placed on the physiology by life’s demands, such as family relations, finances, illness, bereavement, divorce, or even winning the lottery. When we suffer stress from these persistent and longterm life events, it can mean our threshold of reaction to demands and pressure at work can be lowered. Thus, at work, we may overreact inappropriately, too often and too easily.
We put pressure on ourselves by taking on more work than we can handle, especially other people’s problems, by trying to save face, and by positively promoting super powers that we do not possess. These poor judgements are often the result of making assumptions about what is expected of us.
The situation of stress arising from lack of stimulation at work has been covered above under Complacency. Some early visible signs of stress include changes in personality and moods, errors of judgement, lack of concentration and poor memory.
Learning assertiveness skills will allow a worker to say ‘No’, ‘Stop!’, and communicate concerns with colleagues, customers or themselves. These skills are essential, and when deadlines are critical, extra resources and help should always be obtained to ensure the task is completed to the required level of quality.
9) Lack of Assertiveness
Following on from the above, this factor links well. If we did want to react to the requirement of pressure, then being assertive is often the skill required to counteract it. 70 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE MAY 2019
Individuals may notice difficulty in sleeping and an increase in fatigue, as well as digestive problems. Longer-term signs of stress include susceptibility to infections, increased use of stimulants and self-medication, absence from work, illness and depression. It is important to recognise the early signs of stress and to determine whether it is acute or chronic. Coping with daily demands at work can be achieved with simple breathing and relaxation techniques. However, perhaps more effective is having channels of communication readily available through which to discuss the issue and help to rationalise perceptions.

It is entirely appropriate that some of these channels involve social interaction with peers. As with fatigue, sleep, diet and exercise are all important factors in helping to reduce stress and build resilience to stressors. If the stress is chronic, then definite lifestyle changes will be required; this must be achieved with support from an employer.
Be aware of the norms or the normal or the way things are routinely done. Be particularly vigilant for negative normal that detract from what we consider acceptable safety standards and practices. With changing technology and structures, we must no longer be sucked into the whole, "That's how we've always done it".
Companies therefore should offer employee assistance or wellbeing policies that include stress reduction programmes.
Workplace practices develop over time, through experience, and often under the influence of a specific workplace culture. These practices can be both, good and bad, safe and unsafe; they are referred to as “the way we do things round here”. Unfortunately, such practices follow unwritten rules or behaviors, which deviate from the required rules, procedures and instructions.
11) Lack of Awareness
Situational awareness is so important when working in all manners of the aviation environment. Simply knowing what's going on around you all the time is a skill but also a requirement. Lack of awareness occurs when there is a lack of alertness and vigilance in observing. This usually occurs with very experienced persons who fail to reason out possible consequences to what may normally be a good practice. One of the safety nets for lack of awareness is to ask more “what ifs” if there is conflicting information or things don’t quite seem right. Working in isolation and only considering one’s own responsibilities can lead to tunnel vision; a partial view, and a lack of awareness of the affect our actions can have on others and the wider task. Such lack of awareness may also result from other human factors, such as stress, fatigue, pressure and distraction. It is important to build experience throughout our careers, especially concerning the roles and responsibilities of those we work with, and our own place in the wider Team. Developing our foresight is essential in pre-empting the affects our actions may have on others. This is an attitude of professionalism and involves constant questioning “what if …?” Asking others to check our work and challenge our decisions is useful in gaining the relevant experience and expanding our awareness. Vigilance is closely related to situational awareness, and workplace procedures, such as scanning, two-way communication and use of checklists will help to maintain vigilance. Situational awareness is vital when driving on an airfield. Understanding where you are and what you need to do safely is vital. It is so easy it to become distracted and to become too focused on one thing meaning that you then forget or cannot see what else you need to be doing. It is easy to lose the ability to carry out a task safely and successfully because you are trying to do, or have been given too many things to do at once Lack of situational awareness and be summarised with: • Distraction • Focused Attention • Task Saturation
12) Norms
Commonly accepted practices where assumptions are made that the course of action or procedure is correct based on history without re- validating or verifying the current procedures is known as “Norms.”
These Norms can then be enforced through peer pressure and force of habit. It is important to understand that most Norms have not been designed to meet all circumstances, and therefore are not adequately tested against potential threats. Rules and procedures should have been designed and tested, and therefore ought to be enforced and followed rigorously. Where workers feel pressure to deviate from a procedure, or work around it, then this information should be fed back so that the procedure can be reviewed and amended, if necessary. That concludes the list of 12 but as mentioned earlier it is not exhaustive and the description I’ve commented on beneath the headings is only a view and can be expanded on. Just try and think of when an error occurred was it solely the action of the brain, or which, or which combination of the above can the situation be attributed to and is there is anything that could have been done differently. Finally, and as I alluded to at the start, the whole situation of the mistake or error may have been triggered by a poor design, something or a process that was not fit for purpose or could have been planned better. Quite often the reason for a human to undertake a task that is unsafe or requires us to adapt is because the process or equipment is wrong, and we must be prepared to report and suggest improvement. There are also many studies on this topic, but I’ll conclude and leave space for further articles in the future. Common human behaviour is to look for the easier way of doing something. A way that is quicker, is more straightforward despite the impact of that action maybe. Is it the design or the human?
