Time To Prepare For Winter Don’t Leave it Too Late! Non-corrosive General De-icing Fluid Besides an ice-free runway and apron, there might be other areas or vehicles on the tarmac that might need de-icing treatments, such as trucks, cars, loading docks, machinery, etc. For these applications, a non-corrosive liquid de-icing liquid might be the perfect option. Simply spray some non-corrosive general de-icing fluid, either diluted or undiluted, on the surface to de-ice and you need not worry about any cross-contamination of corrosive products.

While it is still quite true that this is the perfect moment to get your hands on our de-icing and anti-icing products to make sure your FIKI flights are carried out in all safety over the next few months, we would like to take this opportunity to highlight some other import aspects of winter operations in general and business aviation.

Frostman De-icing Fluid is the ideal general purpose deicing fluid for these particular uses. It can be used for the de-icing applications mentioned above, but has many other, non-aviation uses, like the de-icing of railroads, decks of boats, windmill blades, etc. It is perfect for these applications because of its non-corrosive and pH-neutral nature, and because it is not harmful to metallic as well as painted, plastic, rubber and glass surfaces.

Flying is the fun part of course, but aircraft owners, pilots, FBOs and MROs should not forget that there is a lot more to take into account for safe winter operations besides keeping your aircraft ice-free.

Non-corrosive Runway De-icing A very simple basic principle, or “ground rule”, if you will (pun intended), is keeping runways and aprons snow and ice-free. While regular salt is still the most economical and ecological solution, in critical locations such as runways, it’s quite essential that safety comes first. A non-corrosive runway de-icer is the best way to go to get rid of ice, snow and rime that has built up on runways and aprons. Unfortunately, salt or other chloride-containing de-icers are not recommended to use for runway or apron de-icing due to their corrosive properties that may affect the body and structure of your aircraft. A good alternative is sodium formate based de-icing/anti-icing products.

A Clean Aircraft Last but not least, it is important to mention that good cleaning remains imperative in winter. Ice and snow buildup on the aircraft might be easily cured with the right de-icing product, but some dirt or oil, grease and exhaust gas stains might remain. These particles may influence the effectiveness of your de-icing product. Keeping your aircraft clean is therefore a good way to guarantee that your other aviation chemicals work as they are supposed to. Of course we must add as a footnote that it is inevitable that deicers leave small traces of residue on the airframe after use.

Aero-Sense Grandi-U2 Runway De-icer is such an alternative. It is a high performance sodium formate based and AMS 1431 certified runway de-icer that will not harm metallic surfaces, compared to road de-icing salt. The solid, irregular granules can be used for a curative (de-icing) and preventive (anti-icing) treatment. The formulation contains corrosion inhibitors and is effective down to -18°C.

Additionally, it is worth noting that a clean aircraft has improved aerodynamics, resulting in lower fuel consumption. This is another very good reason why it is vital that aircraft are kept spotless, not only in winter, but year round. The move was made possible via equity and loan financing from Veruth Holdings Ltd, Peter Kara, and Falcon Flying Services. The premises were purchased from Monarch’s administrators, KPMG. BSA directors Anoop Singh Bamrah and Shonu Bamrah (who are also directors of Biggin Hill-based Falcon Flying Services), Matt Harvey and Richard Cooper agreed the finance package with Peter Kara, non-executive director of Veruth Holdings. “BSA has chosen the former Monarch Airlines Engineering Training Academy building as the base for its first ever Aviation Academy, with plans to expand into more facilities nationally and internationally over the next five years,” said the company. “With airline passenger numbers set to double in the next 12 years, BSA plans to build a global network of world class industry led Aviation Academies, with the aim of training at least 3% of the global market by 2025,” it added. The BSA Aviation Academy at Luton will launch its first UK Civil Aviation Authority approved engineering courses in November this year, with other aviation disciplines following “shortly after.” BSA said that airlines had already booked onto the first courses at the new Luton site. “BSA will provide a new and simplified model of training for the aviation industry, which will enable airlines to outsource all of their requirements for a broad range of key specialist aviation personnel to one industry leading training organisation. The aim is to create a footprint in the UK, which will ultimately be adapted at a local level worldwide,” said BSA. The company also stressed the need for greater diversity in the aviation workforce, stating: “With BSA’s passion to produce the best aviation personnel, the company aims to open up the airline industry to all, working with local communities to encourage more students to train for careers in aviation.” David Sheridan, owner of Veruth Holdings, said: “As a long-term equity

Veruth Holdings was founded in 1936 as a manufacturing business. Growing at a steady pace during the 1950s and 1960s, Veruth became one of the most successful businesses in its sector with over 200 employees. Two divisions of the company were sold off in the 1970s to large multinational companies. The company later re-formed owning 100% of Europa Components. In 1991 David Sheridan became the chairman following the death of his father, Dr. Vernon Sheridan (the founder of Veruth). The new “START PAC GREEN” has been launched with the aim of replacing diesel power units (GPU), while providing the same service to create a greener working environment. The GPU is entirely battery powered and does not require an internal combustion engine for power. The majority of non-transport aircraft operate on the 24-volt direct current system (VDC). These aircraft need to be powered up for ground-based operations and their on-board batteries are inadequate, therefore there is a need for an external power supply source from a ground power unit. Currently, most GPUs are powered with diesel engines, which are loud, environment polluting, expensive to run and maintain. To address this problem, airports worldwide are requiring dieseland gas-powered units to be replaced with battery powered electric models. Start Pac’s “START PAC GREEN” is the first of its kind and has been specifically designed to replace these old, polluting GPUs. The START PAC GREEN has several unique features: • A larger battery bank for powering up the aircraft systems for extended periods of time. • A smaller battery bank for engine starting. • The starting battery bank can be

removed from the ground power unit when a portable unit is required. Built-in battery chargers to replenish both battery banks.

Pollution and emission standards are becoming stricter on internal combustion engines and therefore more airports worldwide are going “green” by replacing diesel- and gas-powered units with electric units. Airports account for 10% of emissions in some urban areas and conventional fuel ground support equipment is the main source, even exceeding the emissions of aircraft. The “START PAC GREEN” offers emission-free operations and consumes electricity with an efficiency of approximately 80%, while fuelpowered vehicles are typically limited to efficiency below 20%. “The total cost of operation for the START PAC GREEN (including recharging the battery bank) is about half the cost of operating an equivalent diesel-powered unit,” said the company. Protect Your Piston Engine in Winter! The onset of winter brings shorter days and cold weather conditions that should prompt every pilot to think about their engine and the oil they use. The cold weather can present a range of challenges for aircraft, including the thickening of engine oil. In some particularly remote areas, communities rely on air transportation, both for travel and for the supply of key resources – it is vital that aircraft continue to fly even in exceptionally cold weather. In the Canadian city of Yellowknife, where temperatures can drop as low as -37°C, for example, air transport is used for everything from transporting workers to importing groceries. Equally, for many aircraft owners, the cold weather can mean more infrequent flying, and engines therefore lying dormant for longer periods. Colder weather causes an increase in condensation – this is a risk for dormant engines as the water combines with engine oil and by-products from the combustion process to form an acidic environment for the engine components. Preparation is therefore key to protecting dormant engines. Every pilot and aircraft owner ultimately wants to avoid unnecessary engine wear and unscheduled maintenance, which can compromise precious flying time. No matter how often the aircraft takes flight, choosing the right piston engine oil is a simple practical consideration, but one that can be vital to the health of an engine during the winter months. We’ve put together some key tips for looking after your engine at every stage of flight. On the ground: protecting dormant engines and infrequent flyers One of the most fundamental issues in the winter months for many private pilots is overcoming the infrequent flying patterns. Engines are often left idle, and water from the atmosphere can build up inside. Used oil can be acidic, and when this combines with the water, it can cause corrosion. This in turn can lead to pitting of engine components. The problem is compounded by the formation of rust particles in the oil, which can cause further wear and damage during the next engine start. This is a typical problem that might seem difficult to avoid during a season where pilots have less control over how long they leave their engines idle.

Choosing the right AeroShell product can prevent this process, particularly the one that contains corrosion inhibitor and anti-wear additives such as AeroShell Oil W 15W-50. It is ideally suited for pilots who intend to fly through the winter, but do not manage to fly as regularly as every two weeks. For engines that are to be kept dormant for even longer, specific products such as AeroShell Fluid 2XN have been developed for aircraft that are to be kept in storage for four months or longer. In the air: protecting aircraft flying in colder temperatures The second issue is choosing the right grade of oil for colder temperatures. In Yellowknife, the blizzard-force winds and cold temperatures can make oil thicker. All oils become thicker as the temperature is reduced, but the differences between grades become larger the lower the temperature. When the oil flows too slowly on start-up, it may fail to reach and protect critical components. Issues with oil circulation during startup is ultimately one of the main causes of engine wear. Engine oils with low viscosity are therefore well suited to cold temperatures – the aim of using a ‘thinner’ oil in colder weather being that the oil achieves the correct viscosity to provide the optimum lubrication when the engine is at operating temperature. Single grade oil such as AeroShell Oil W80 and AeroShell Oil W80 Plus are perfectly suited for the winter months. Multigrade oil such as AeroShell Oil W 15W-50 can also protect critical engine parts on start-up by reaching full pressure as much as 25 seconds faster, compared to a competitor’s multigrade mineral oils, helping to prevent damage in even the coldest of temperatures. All year-round performance No matter in what capacity a pistonengine aircraft is being used, whether it is for air taxi operations or for use by private pilots, ensuring that the engine oil performs well whatever the weather is paramount. A high quality multigrade engine oil can perform well under all temperatures — whether it’s the blistering -37°C cold of Yellowknife or the scorching +49°C heat of Dubai. This means that when using a premium semisynthetic multigrade ashless dispersant oil, there’s no need to change oil with the season, and the oil selected by pilots during these winter months can be used throughout the year.

his professional competence, his inexhaustible energy, and his passion for

aviation, which guided him in establishing a strong and prosperous company. We thank Wilfried Otto for his hard work and dedication, and for the affection that he always had for those that worked with him. Our relationship was built on mutual trust and respect and we will always honour his memory.

We mourn for a personality who was unique in General Aviation and who leaves a painful gap in the company.

are destroyed, and they are currently living under dreadful sanitary conditions,” says Lepschy.

Three of the Foundation’s aircraft (a Quest Kodiak 100, Pilatus PC-6, and a Cessna 206) were engaged for more than a week lifting injured and sick people from the areas ravaged by the hurricane, and bringing in medical personnel, drinking water and food to the northern islands. The aircraft were based at Fort Lauderdale in Florida and flew to the hard-hit northeast of the Bahamas laden with food, water and other emergency supplies for the stricken people effected by the category 5 hurricane. Several hundred sick or injured individuals were flown from the ravaged islands to the Bahamas capital, Nassau, or to Florida, where they received medical treatment. Over 40 tons of water, food and other supplies were transported to the remote islands. The foundation's light, single-engine airplanes are equipped with amphibious floats and can take off and land on water or concrete runways. The Quest Aircraft Kodiak 100, Pilatus PC-6, and Cessna 206 aircraft can carry up to eight passengers or one ton of freight. They also allow for sick or injured patients to be transported lying down. They were originally purchased by the Dieter Morszeck Foundation to provide medical support to the indigenous people of the Amazon. “We are saving people who have been injured by hurricane Dorian or who have fallen seriously ill,” said pilot Sven Lepschy, originally from Germany, who lives in West Palm Beach, Florida. Lepschy initiated the relief and rescue missions of the Dieter Morszeck Foundation, and is also CEO of WACO Aircraft, a manufacturer of open cockpit sport biplanes located in Battle Creek, Michigan. “Our small airplanes can reach even the outermost islands in the northeastern corner of the Bahamas. Many people there have lost everything. Their houses

With the floats, we can land on water, but the storm has left a lot of wood and wreckage in the sea,” said Cédric Gitschenko, another of the foundation’s pilots. The Swiss aviation professional lives part-time on the Bahamas and was flying rescue missions non-stop during the crisis. “My heart bleeds when I see the destruction the hurricane brought. Thanks to the Dieter Morszeck Foundation, though, and many donations and volunteers from Florida, we can help alleviate the suffering,” he said. The Dieter Morszeck Foundation carries out its rescue missions in cooperation with Florida Seaplanes, an Orlandobased flight school, and Gold Aviation of Fort Lauderdale. David Hensch is the third pilot alongside Sven and Cédric; Sven's wife Nathalie, a Swiss native and former flight attendant, took care of the patients in the cabin. The Dieter Morszeck Foundation was established by a German industrialist from Cologne, Dieter Morszeck, in 2016. The foundation was set up to finance and operate flight rescue missions, conduct medical research, provide medical assistance and supplies, further education, and foster children and young adults living in poverty. In Brazil, the organisation is setting up a mission to provide medical services for the indigenous people of the Amazon with 'flying doctors'. To that end, it has bought several amphibious airplanes equipped for medical transportation. These are currently deployed on the relief and rescue mission in the Bahamas.

Why Bother With a Title Search Before Registering in Trust We often receive pressing and important phone calls from potential clients that require a direct response – this month’s topic stems from exactly that, with an urgent call from a man about to board a plane to Nashville, going to buy a plane from a guy he had never met. He was experiencing cold feet, wondering if the man he was about to meet really owned the plane, had the right to sell it, or owed any money on it. So, we asked him, “Have you ever had a title search done on the aircraft?” and he said, “No, should I have?” The number of deals done on a handshake in the aviation industry is amazing. No one would ever think of buying real estate like that, but it happens in aviation more often than one might think, particularly in the smaller aircraft market where buyers are more reluctant to spend extra money on items like title searches, escrow fees and legal advice. There are huge benefits to one of the most basic services in an aviation transaction – a search of the FAA records. Better known as a title search, this service can provide a buyer, or owner in trust, with valuable information about the aircraft. For less than $100 (in most cases), buyers can find out the name of the registered owner of the aircraft and whether a bank or any other entity has an outstanding interest against the aircraft. Taking the story above as an example, what if the “seller” of the aircraft didn’t really own it? What if he

had stolen it from someone else who owed the bank $50,000 for that plane? What would have happened to the buyer when the seller and bank realized the plane was no longer theirs? Think it sounds farfetched? Think again. Philko vs. Shacket is a landmark aviation case in which an unscrupulous seller sold the same plane to two separate buyers. As much as we don’t want to admit it, dishonest people exist in this world, and some of them have been known to sell unsuspecting buyers planes they don’t own or have the right to sell. A simple search of the FAA records can help prevent this from happening. This unfortunate scenario aside, searching the FAA records before buying a plane can also help prevent title issues on down the line that can result in a plane being grounded. The FAA has strict rules about how documents being filed need to look. The seller’s name has to match the FAA records, only certain titles under signatures are acceptable, there are boxes to check for buyers, and lenders need help releasing outstanding loans or filing new ones. If any documents are not properly filled out when filed, the FAA could refuse to record them, causing problems for a buyer, or owner trustee, on down the line. It is then strongly in the best interest of all parties involved in an aircraft trust to first have a title search done – so no one is at risk. In fact, it is our policy to search FAA records and clear up any issues before registering a client in trust.

Aeroscout is Proving its Worth in European Powerline Inspections Aeroscout is located in Switzerland and has two main products, both UAV Helicopters: Scout B-330 was introduced in 2018 and is Aeroscout’s latest product, offering more payload and longer flight time. Scout B-100 has been the main product since 2008, with a lot of flights and mission experience. Aeroscout provides autonomous, industrial unmanned helicopters for airborne laser scanning (LiDAR), aerial imagery and photogrammetry, aerial video recording, surveillance and inspection, search and rescue, aerial scientific measurements, and many other applications requiring a remotely piloted aerial system. The Scout B-330 is a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) helicopter drone developed by Aeroscout and has a unique payload capacity of 30kg (66 pounds), up to 3 hours’ endurance, and can operate at up to 3,000m AMSL (10,000ft Above Mean Sea Level). It has an INS (Inertial Navigation System)/GPS guidance system. The Scout B-330 can be used for customised solutions for various applications using digital cameras, video camcorders, laser scanners, infrared or hyper-spectral camera equipment. Professional system integration based on the customer’s requirements are performed by Aeroscout’s multidisciplinary team. Aeroscout can offer its proven products and experienced flight crew for various customer applications. In cooperation with clients, Aeroscout develops new customised UAV solutions for specific uses. The latest results from such applications are regularly presented at scientific conferences and commercial exhibitions. The helicopter drones produced by Aeroscout are currently on duty for several geological and surveillance companies and for universities around the world. In the field of airborne laser scanning (UAV-based LiDAR) Aeroscout works closely together with RIEGL laser scanning products.

Power Line Inspection and Corridor Scanning

The availability and performance of high-voltage power lines is essential to almost all aspects of society. Many countries have strict regulations for the continuous maintenance of high-voltage power lines and power masts in order to guarantee energy safeness and disposability. The focus of Aeroscout is to allow power line inspections to be carried out quickly and efficiently. Aeroscout inspects power lines in Switzerland and Germany as a service for electricity companies and works to improve the UAV helicopters, the inspection payload and the workflow. Today, Aeroscout UAV helicopters are used for the inspection of power line sections of 5-20km. But the trend is to increase the mission range by using longer flight endurance UAVs (e.g. Scout B-330, 3 hours’ endurance) with permission to fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS). In 2015, Aeroscout participated as a main partner in a Swiss-financed project (CTI) for two years with the goal of demonstrating the value of power line inspection with UAVs, and this was a great success. Aeroscout received the first licence in Switzerland in 2016, allowing it to fly over an inhabited area with a UAV in the weight class of the Scout B1-100 UAV and B-330 UAV (25-150 kg). Obtaining a licence from the Swiss aviation authority was possible due to Aeroscout’s many years of experience in the UAV business, and the reliability of its UAV platforms. Aeroscout is currently involved in the process of receiving the first BVLOS permission in Switzerland, and intends to make power line inspection with UAVs even more cost-effective for its clients.

Analysis of a LIDAR “Pointcloud”

Today’s network operators want to know if their power line masts are still in top condition. To be able to detect even slight distortions or bent structures of the masts, multiple scan lines must be flown over the mast to generate sufficient scan points on the structure. Having to combine these scan lines requires very accurate flight trajectories and LiDAR data. The trajectory is recorded using the new Honeywell HGuide n580, which delivers the high quality position and orientation data needed for such a highly accurate task. The LiDAR data was generated with a Riegl VUX-1UAV scanner. The different colors in the picture show the different scan lines.

TrakkaCam TC-300 Gyro Stabilised Multi-Spectral Sensor

Not content with setting new standards in the searchlight business, at the end of 2015 Trakka Systems acquired Swesystems AB, a manufacturer of non-ITAR gyrostabilised camera systems. For the Love of Turboprops Growing up, like most of you, I would look to the sky every time an airplane flew over. I still do. But of course, the sight of a Learjet flying over was always a special treat. Back then, all corporate jets were “Learjets” to me. Once I became a pilot, my dream was to fly jets, any jet, it didn’t matter which. Eventually, I achieved my dream and flew a Learjet 24D for a few years. What a ride! There was nothing like tooling along at FL450 on a beautiful winter day doing 0.82 Mach, turning a lot of jet fuel into vapor! I felt like I had arrived. Then the day came that I got a King Air check out. I loved the airplane immediately; its simplicity, its solid feel and its roominess compared to the ‘executive mailing tube’ of the Lear 24 and the Citation 500. I was impressed with the ramp appeal which towered over the small jets; that huge air stair door that – when you stood at the top – enabled you to literally look down on other aircraft on the ramp. I loved the design of the PT6 engine that made bird FOD a near impossibility. The turboprop often gets overlooked by those distracted by the glitz and glam of the ‘private jet’ lifestyle - and who could blame them? Movies and TV have led us to believe that private jets are the crème de la crème of travel. But in my opinion the allure dwindles when you consider a jet’s limitations (not to mention the optics of flying around in a private jet in today’s volatile political environment). Turboprops, especially those with the Blackhawk Upgrade, deliver elite performance and functionality at an economic value that comparable sized jets can’t match.

The Turboprop You Know; The Performance You’ll Love

OVERCOME HYPOXIA

The reduced operating costs of a King Air have always been their main advantage over a jet. Even so, they’re so much slower, right? Even the old Citation 500 was faster than most turboprops in the 1970s and 1980s. But with a range of only around 800nm it was also limited on what itcould carry. Eventually Beechcraft came up with a solution to compete with the Citation series. The King Air 300/350 would

bring the turboprop market back to life with a vengeance. Suddenly there was a 300+ knot airplane that could carry eight people, plus baggage more than 1,200nm in four hours or less. I challenge you to name a Light Jet or even a Mid-size Jet that can do that today at the same cost. Yet, as great as the King Air 350 is, Blackhawk made it even better. The Blackhawk 350 upgrade includes factory-new PT6A-67A engines as well as new MT 5-blade composite propellers. Not only does this power pairing allow your King Air 350 to climb to FL350 in just 18 minutes (something many jets cannot do), it also delivers jetlike speeds at turboprop costs. With the XP67A, your King Air 350 now boasts a maximum cruise speed of over 332kts, making it the world’s fastest King Air. At full fuel, your King Air 350 with -67A engines can carry 62% more weight than a Citation CJ2, and it can do so with a more spacious cabin. King Airs can safely operate on far shorter runways, allowing access to many more airports giving you more flexibility to get you closer to your destination, saving you time and money.

Economic Considerations

The cost-saving advantages of the turboprop hold true with the Blackhawk upgrade. Purchasing a pre-owned aircraft, you might initially spend more on an upgraded King Air 350, but the higher acquisition cost is negated by savings of about $210k per year in operating costs compared to most comparable sized jets. Reduced fuel consumption, lower ramp fees, lower insurance costs, and much lower maintenance costs are just some of the benefits. And finally, we come to resale value. Engines are the primary value center of turboprops and jets alike. An XP67A King Air 350 holds its resale value well. To highlight this, our STC test plane was a 1991 King Air 350 that sold for $3.3m after the upgrade!

Final Approach

At the end of the day, there will always be those who just want to fly a jet, regardless of the cost. But for many savvy operators, I would argue that the King Air will always be the best airplane ever built.

Helicopter training academy Helicentre Aviation has received approval from the UK CAA to deliver integrated training for the Commercial Pilot’s Licence (Helicopter). The first integrated course was due to commence in late October at the academy’s Leicester Airport training centre. It enables ab-initio cadets to attend full-time training for 12 months to obtain a professional licence. The academy’s proven track record in the delivery of modular commercial pilot training and the provision of professional helicopter pilots to industry spans almost two decades, and integrated training is a natural and positive step. With Helicentre recently joining forces with Bristow in the implementation of a fully-sponsored Cadet Training Programme (See GA Buyer Europe, October 2019, p16) the addition of the integrated CPL(H) provides an alternative route into careers like offshore oil and gas which is both cost and time-efficient.

Helicentre Aviation trains ab-initio pilots using a large fleet of single-engine piston Cabri G2 and Robinson R44 helicopters which it owns and operates. The company said the integrated approval has created “additional employment opportunities for ground and flight instructors and expansion plans are already underway to enhance the academy’s training facilities.” The start date and selection process for the 2020 integrated CPL(H) course was set to be announced at the Pilot Careers Live event at the Sofitel, Heathrow Terminal 5 on 1st and 2nd November 2019. “The Helicentre Aviation team will be joined there by global operator Bristow Helicopters to speak to future pilots about helicopter training and employment opportunities,” the company told GA Buyer Europe.

The first AW109 VIP Trekker in Europe made an appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show recently before heading to Sloane Helicopters in the UK for delivery to its private owner. The helicopter is operated by Apollo Air Services on the owner’s behalf and is available for VIP charter. Sloane Helicopters, which has been Leonardo’s distributor in the UK and Ireland for more than 20 years, will be maintaining two AW109 Trekkers in the UK. The AW109 Trekker is the newest model within Leonardo’s light twin-engine helicopter range. Leonardo VIP helicopters lead the UK and Irish market: almost 100 aircraft with nearly 90% represented by the AW109 series (Power, Grand and GrandNew). This market is second only to Brazil, where about 130 Leonardo VIP helicopters fly amongst 400 Sao Paulo helipads. The Italy-based manufacturer boasts a 44% global share of the twin-engine VIP helicopter market. The company’s fleet of 2,300 civil helicopters are used for law enforcement, offshore transport, utilities, search and rescue and VIP/corporate transport. How Hot is the Used Helicopter Sales Market?

Recent market reports indicate the VIP used helicopter marketplace is holding up well so far in 2019. AvBuyer’s Matt Harris spoke with Mark Clancy, HelicopterBuyer and Michael Roberts, JET VEND to gain their insights… Mark Clancy

The used aircraft marketplace today paints a complex picture, and the market for pre-owned turbine helicopters is no different. According to data released by JETNET, turbine helicopter sales decreased 13.3% year-over-year (YoY) during the first half (H1) of 2019. At the same time, turbine helicopters took an average 31 days less to sell than they did in H1 2018, and the fleet percentage for sale dropped from 5.8% in 2018 to 5.3% in 2019. Additional information published in Aero Asset’s recent report covering pre-owned helicopter market trends says that as many as 63% of sales in Q2 2019 were configured for VIP operations. So, while transactions appear to be down for the year generally, it seems that VIP-configured helicopters are holding up well within the current marketplace.

But why is this?

“Demand for VIP helicopters has increased during the last two years, and it comes from private buyers purchasing light single-engine turbines through to high-networth individuals seeking to purchase twin-engine VIP configured medium helicopters,” explains Mark Clancy, president and CEO, HelicopterBuyer. Clancy, with 32 years’ experience in the aviation business and 20 years in helicopter sales, started out as an aerospace engineer overhauling Garrett TFE731 turbofan engines, selling business jet and engine MRO services, before offering Lycoming T53 and Rolls-Royce M250 helicopter engine MRO sales. Eventually, in 2000, he moved into the helicopter trading business, and established HelicopterBuyer. “The prosperous business environment today, especially in North America, is the impetus behind the trend for VIP sales,” he elaborates. “We have seen many small business owners interested in learning to fly and seeking to buy their own helicopter.” Though he didn’t have percentages to hand for VIP helicopter transactions versus other applications, Michael Roberts, president, helicopter and jet sales brokerage JETVEND believes plenty of potential exists for continued growth in VIP helicopter sector.

up across all weight classes, that has not been the case in the medium-twin category - accounting for 30% of the pre-owned transaction volume, year to date (YTD). “I believe that the medium-twins in question are former off-shore or EMS Bell 412s and older Eurocopter/Airbus AS332s that generally have not been selling and are sitting idle,” Clancy suggests. “However, the trend over the last couple of years has been for these helicopters to find a second life in the utility markets. “For example, the older Bell 412s (412, 412SP and 412HP) are much lighter than the 412EP and are less expensive. There have been several examples of utility operators reconfiguring them for utility missions," he elaborates. “The Bell 412 hot and high performance is not as good as a Bell 205A-1++, 212S or 212 (for example), but not all utility operators need to fly in hot and high environments. The 412 is also much faster and smoother to fly than the older Bell two-bladed rotor system medium twins. The same could be said of former offshore configured AS332 L1s and L2s; several have been reconfigured for firefighting in Europe and North America. “The other reason why the medium twins have not been selling well is due to growing interest in heavy helicopters for forestry and other infrastructure projects, such as power line construction.”

Older Helicopters: Finding a ‘Second Life’

Remarkably, according to Aero Asset’s report, only 2% of the YTD sales of VIP helicopters are for airframes older than 20 years. Clancy points out that while aircraft like the Bell 412 might find a ‘second life’ in a different sector, others are not so easily repurposed. “Older Sikorsky S-76s do not have much of a ‘second life’ opportunity as they’re not candidates for utility work,” he explains. “They’re too expensive to reconfigure to VIP/corporate and are too costly to maintain. Generally, they’re too much for the private operator to fly and hangar.”

Roberts began his own fixed-wing brokerage in 2007, and when an opportunity arose to sell a Sikorsky which had been originally custom-ordered by the Sultan of Brunei he moved into rotorcraft sales, which forms a substantial part of his business today.

Nevertheless, some older Bell 206 Long Rangers and older AS350s are being transitioned from utility roles to private operators. “This type of transition first occurred years ago with the Bell 206B Jet Rangers and AS350Bs,” Clancy reveals. “Now as commercial operators have shifted their preferences to the Bell 407 and AS350B3e, the Bell 206L3/L4 and AS350B2s are becoming aircraft of choice for private owners.”

“There are many more people in the world who could benefit from, and can afford helicopter travel, who are not currently using helicopters,” he notes. “Simply put, the potential is massive.”

With a picture forming that some older helicopters have more traction than others on the pre-owned market, are there any big deterrents hindering more transactions of 20+ year-old helicopters in the current marketplace?

Medium Twin-Engine Trouble-spots

Roberts implies that some of the trouble could lay in the pricing. “Unless an older aircraft is priced according to its age, its current status, and particular projected

expenses, it will sit on the market,” he details. “Buyers choose newer machines for the same amount that many sellers of older machines would like to get.” “The key buyer deterrent relating to older helicopters is that most sellers are not thinking of the buyer when they decide to sell,” Clancy agrees. “Sellers really need to consider the buyer more when marketing their asset. They can do this by ensuring the helicopter is airworthy; by updating components and addressing major inspections that may be coming due soon.” “It’s also worth sellers investing in new paint and an interior refurbishment. Pre-Owned Helicopter Market Hotspots

Having discussed a couple of the sticking points in today’s pre-owned helicopter marketplace, one market is catching Clancy’s eye for all the right reasons so far in 2019. “Bell 407s are probably the hottest helicopter on the market today as there is only 2.8% of the fleet for sale,” he details. “By comparison, many other models have 5% of the fleet for sale.” What’s behind the market activity for this particular model? “While Bell has been increasing its factory production capability, it has many domestic and foreign government priority orders at present. “This is pushing out commercial lead-times, driving the pre-owned demand and pricing,” he reveals.

Sunny Horizon for Pre-Owned Helicopter Sales?

Though used turbine sales during 2019 have been down YoY, do Roberts and Clancy expect an uptick any time soon? While Roberts sees a potential for all categories within the helicopter sales marketplace to improve, Clancy points to the different factors that influence different segments. “Regional Gross Domestic Product growth and geopolitical stability drive the offshore helicopter markets, whereas private buyer demand is primarily a function of the economy,” he offers. “High-net-worth-individuals associated with the VIP markets are not affected by the economy, though. “Meanwhile, emergency medical markets are determined by private investment and government regulation, but utility markets are driven by a combination of economically-driven resource development and environmentally-compelling firefighting and disaster recovery support. “So, you see, depending on domestic and world events, and your point of view, you can develop your own sense of where the various global helicopter market sectors are headed going forwards…” More information from www.helicopterbuyer.com and www.jets.aero
