Helps you hit high hygiene standards It has been a strange year so far but our usual winter warnings on being prepared come with additional precautions for coronavirus where Aero-Sense has a range of products to help the fight… Every single November edition of GA Buyer Magazine this past decade, Aero-Sense was on the front cover, reminding you about the fact that winter is fast approaching — and reminding you that now is the perfect moment to stock up on TKS De-icing Fluid and CE-5 Fuel System Icing Inhibitor. If 2020 were a normal year, this edition would be no different. We would stress once again that safety is of paramount importance and to advise you to stock up for the winter that is coming. While that’s of course still the case, safe flying has gotten an entirely new meaning this year. Taking “the necessary safety measures before the flight” has a lot more implications in the world we live in today. It no longer only means making sure your TKS tank is full and your fuel anti-icing additive has been well mixed before a FIKI flight. Now you should also make sure the aircraft cabin has been disinfected properly, with aviation certified products. It means having alcohol hand gel on board to ensure the necessary hand hygiene for passengers and crew. Safety has intertwined with hygiene to a degree never seen before, but Aero-Sense has got you covered. As always!
New Focus on Hygiene Products Although commercial airlines have been quick to implement higher standards in terms of aircraft hygiene, many people, business travellers and tourists alike, are avoiding or at least delaying flying commercially for the time being. Flyers have many concerns, leading some to more heavily rely on general and business aviation for their travel needs. Therefore, general aviation must not stay behind in terms of hygiene standards. While Aero-Sense, as your reliable partner in aviation chemicals, is of course very proud to supply world-class airlines with cleaning and hygiene products, we are rooted in general and business aviation, which remain dear to our heart. In order to support our loyal customers as best as we can, the Aero-Sense team has been working hard these past months to update certain product formulations, in order to make our products even more effective and efficient, as well as develop new, aviation-certified products. Trusted products in our range, used by airlines and private pilots alike, include of course our Aero-Sense Cabin Disinfectant, which is available in both a ready-to-use version (750ml spray bottle and 20L cans) or as a concentrated liquid that has to be diluted. Cabin Disinfectant is often used in combination with Cabin Cleaner (same pack sizes) for a good scrub of the cabin before disinfecting the hard surfaces, creating at thorough two-step cleaning process. New in our range since the pandemic are our Aero-Sense Hygienic Hand Gel, available in 300ml bottles and 5L cans, as well as in small single-use sachets. Additionally, we also recently added single use Hand Gel Wipes to our hand hygiene range, which are a very convenient way to quickly sanitise your hands on the go. Let’s not forget that ensuring that your hands are clean is the easiest way to keep the spread of the novel coronavirus to a minimum. But of course Aero-Sense has a track record in providing products to help stop the spread of diseases. Our Aircraft Insecticide products (which are used according to World Health Organization recommended disinsection procedures) also help prevent the spread of vector borne diseases through air travel. Aero-Sense is the only manufacturer in the world with an EU approval for sale and use in the EU. And that’s not all! New products are in the pipeline, such as the Aero-Sense Triple Action Cabin Cleaner, which cleans, disinfects and deodorises all at the same time, in a single convenient 150ml spray bottle. Keep an eye out for it! We’ll be sure to let you know when it launches.

Six Things to do Prior to Winter Storage…
… and ONE NOT TO DO! Winter is on the way, but there’s still time to prepare your aircraft for winter storage to ensure that it’s ready to go when the spring flying season starts.
and dirt out that could later form a blockage. Plugging all holes will also prevent moisture that could get into your engine and cause corrosion.
Your best guidance comes from your A&P, but here are some tasks to consider with the goal of keeping corrosion and other damage to a minimum:
Cover What You Can
Change the Oil It may seem counter-intuitive to change the oil now rather than starting with new oil come spring, but remember that the oil in your engine is old and contains dirt and contaminants that can cause rust and corrosion. Not only should you change the oil, but you should replace it with a preservative oil mixture. Then take a quick flight with your new oil to make sure the oil is distributed throughout your engine.
Prepare your Sparkplugs Remove the sparkplugs and spray the holes with a preservative oil mixture. Then replace the original sparkplugs and they’ll be set for winter.
Remove the Battery! Another item to consider is the airplane battery. It probably won’t hold the charge, at least enough of a charge, to start in the spring after sitting for a few months. Bringing the battery home and storing it out of a super-cold location is good. Or a trickle charger can be used every few weeks while it’s in the airplane to maintain the charge and enhance battery life.
Guard Against Critters Mice and other animals will seek refuge from the cold both in your hangar and in your airplane. Of course, no food of any kind that could provide enticement for pests should be left in your hangar or in your airplane. Plug all the holes. Use pitot tube covers and static vent covers, which will keep insects
Your airplane’s windows, canopy, prop blades, and tail should be covered. That will reduce damage to those surfaces, and also help reduce damage to the panel and upholstery caused by exposure to the sun and moisture from rain, ice, and snow.
Keep the Fuel Tanks Full Storing your airplane with full fuel tanks reduces the moisture that can condense in a partially full tank. If your airplane has a flexible, rubber fuel bladder, a full tank will also minimise cracking. And don’t worry about the age of fuel — most avgas is good for up to a year. These six items are what you should do. But what shouldn’t you do during the winter storage period? Here’s one thing:
DON’T GROUND-RUN YOUR AIRPLANE! It is tempting to visit your airplane every few weeks and start it up, thinking this is good for your airplane, but this is a bad idea. Ground running your airplane is not a substitute for an actual flight, where the engine heats to a uniform appropriate temperature. In fact, the uneven heating as a result of ground running is worse for your airplane than doing nothing at all. Leave it alone! Preparing your aircraft for its winter hibernation takes time and effort that will pay off when that first perfect spring flying day comes around again. Consult your pilot’s operating handbook, maintenance manuals, and your A&P for the best winter storage solutions for your specific make and model. COLLINS AEROSPACE GOODRICH DE-ICING EXPANDS SERVICES IN EUROPE
With 12 easy-to-reach locations throughout Europe, Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing Authorised Service Centers give you access to factory trained de-icing systems specialists capable of providing dedicated inspection, repair and installation services. THE IMPORTANCE OF DE-ICING
Under certain conditions, ice can accumulate rapidly on leading-edge surfaces, destroying smooth air flow, increasing drag and decreasing lift. While severe icing has the potential to destabilise an aircraft, the availability of de-icing equipment gives the pilot the tools to combat ice buildup and to fly out of icing conditions. Pilots who fly in regions prone to icing depend on aircraft manufacturers for recommendations on proper operation of de-icing equipment that has been flight tested and certified by the aircraft manufacturer for use on those aircraft. When deciding which type of de-icing system to install on an aircraft, OEMs have a number of choices. The selection is often dictated by the aircraft’s size, power, engine type, operating altitude, acquisition and life-cycle costs. Systems that combat ice accumulation are typically installed on the leading edge of wings, stabilisers and engine air-intake cowlings to prevent or remove ice build-up. Systems vary from inflatable pneumatic boots, to heating systems (engine bleed-air, electric heating elements), to chemical systems (weeping-wing) that weep freezing point depressant liquids. While all of these systems are designed to prevent or dislodge ice buildup on leadingedge surfaces and give pilots time to exit the icing environment, pneumatic de-icing boots continue to offer multiple advantages for general aviation, corporate aircraft, and commercial turboprops.
THE ADVANTAGES OF PNEUMATIC DE-ICING Pneumatic de-icing systems are lightweight, which is an obvious advantage for smalland medium-size aircraft where the extra weight of accessories can make a significant dent in payload capacity. The total weight of a complete pneumatic boot system on a typical twin-engine business aircraft is approximately 50 pounds (22 kg). Secondly, since the power to operate a de-icing system must ultimately come from the aircraft’s engine(s), low power draw pneumatic systems save fuel and draw minimal power from the engines. For example, less than one horsepower is drawn off the engines continuously to operate an ejector that provides vacuum hold-down for the boots and assists in deflating them following an inflation cycle. A maximum of one amp of electrical current is required for six seconds at 28 VDC to cycle the inflation valve solenoids. Bleed-air systems and electric heating systems all require more power to operate, making these system types better suited to larger multi-engine turboprop and jet aircraft that have larger airframes and more available power.
Additionally, pneumatic boot systems are a proven and effective de-icing solution that are economical to purchase and operate. Pneumatic systems also have one of the lowest operating costs — even when the cost of maintenance and eventual boot replacement is considered. Pneumatic de-icing systems have been deployed on small and medium-size aircraft for nearly as long as planes have been flying. This technology has proven itself in countless airborne icing encounters worldwide. Today’s pneumatic de-icing systems are simple to operate, rugged and effective.
DE-ICE BOOT MAINTENANCE “Unlike engines and other mechanical systems – where maintenance is often scheduled based on flight hours – de-ice boots can be subject to wear or damage whether an aircraft is in the air, on the tarmac, or even in a hangar,” says Molly Stibaner, senior product support engineer with Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing. “This means the boots used in pneumatic de-icing systems require ongoing attention and care.” A critical factor in maintaining the de-icing system is a regular schedule of inspection, repair, and/or replacement. De-ice boot inspections should be performed before and after every flight. After landing, wash the boots with mild soap and warm water to remove insects and other debris before it dries. After boots are cleaned and dried, perform a visual inspection for damage of any kind. It is relatively easy to detect even minor surface imperfections by looking along the length of the boot’s leading edge under a good reflecting light source. While physical damage to pneumatic de-ice boots can happen at any time, most agerelated deterioration affecting longevity or reducing de-icing performance can be forestalled by proper preventive maintenance. In addition to frequent cleaning and inspection, regular preventive maintenance consists largely of using manufacturer-approved care products. These treatments protect the neoprene from ozone damage, reduce cosmetic UV fading, and often enhance the performance of the de-icer. “Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-Icing Authorized Service Centers can provide detailed inspections and regular maintenance as they are critical to the proper performance of pneumatic de-ice boots and their contribution to overall flight safety,” said Jeremy Henry, senior program manager with the Collins Aerospace Goodrich De-icing Authorized Service Center Network. “By identifying problems early and implementing immediate repairs or boot replacement, the airworthiness of the aircraft can be assured.” I

Another Brexit Update - Read why Brexit is not so complicated - Should you be afraid of a hard or no-deal Brexit? The UK and EU are still negotiating the terms for the trade arrangements covering the post-Brexit time, but it seems as if the two parties can only agree about disagreeing and that a deal cannot be reached before New Year’s, when the so-called transition period is ending. This is, of course, a negative situation as it leaves uncertainties for the general economic situation. On the other hand, the positive news is that a deal will eventually be made as it is needed by both parts, but it can still take months or years before they are ready to settle things. This means that the relationship between the two parties will be unregulated in the meantime.
Should you be afraid of a hard or no-deal Brexit? The answer is NO
The big question remains whether or if the aircraft operators should be afraid of the so-called hard or no-deal Brexit. Our clear answer is NO. The results of a hard or no-deal Brexit will be the same for most operators as if a deal were to be made. Brexit is not complicated; things are just a bit different. Below, we will explain and discuss the most common issues.
What is the situation right now?
The UK is no longer a part of the EU but is still a part of the EU customs territory until the end of 2020. Therefore, nothing will truly change in 2020 for operators flying within the EU or the UK. An importation or admission into the EU/UK will still give access to both the 27 remaining EU member states and the UK, covering all flights within these territories.
What is the situation in the new year?
Once the UK has left the EU customs territory, the UK will be seen as a separate economic zone or jurisdiction, just like Norway, Switzerland, Russia, the USA, Canada, etc. Anyone can basically fly into e.g., London Biggin Hill and out again without any restrictions by following the simple Temporary Admission (TA) rules for a customs entry. Internal UK flights can happen by complying with the same TA regulation and adhering to the same limitations and restrictions as now enforced within the EU (including the UK). But please remember not to confuse this with immigration and passport issues. The EU has traditionally been more complicated due to the size of the area and the different opinions of the various member states. This is the reason why an aircraft owner/operator will often want to have some kind of approved customs paperwork when operating within the EU; in our opinion, this is not needed for the UK. The UK has fully adapted all aspects of the TA regulation, allowing corporate flights and/or residents as passengers onboard internal flights. Consequently, there are no grey zones when using TA in the British Isles. Nevertheless, following the same guidelines as before Brexit (mirrored to the UK as a jurisdiction instead of the EU) will keep the aircraft operation 100% compliant with the future UK post-Brexit rules.
If you are a EU27 or UK operator and have already imported an aircraft before the end of 2020 in the “wrong zone” The EU Commission has already sent out guidelines on how a EU27/UK operator can naturalise/grandfather an eventual importation performed within the UK. The UK has, so far, not been very precise for the opposite scenario, but clarification is expected.
If you are a EU27/UK operator, what about unrecognised earlier importations or new aircraft?
The safe approach is to fly in accordance with the guidelines in the TA regulation when leaving the home economic zone and flying into the opposite zone.
When is a full importation actually needed?
A full importation into the UK will only be needed if the aircraft is owned/operated/registered by a UK-entity or going to be based within the UK, or if the aircraft spends the majority of its time within the UK. The same set of rules goes for the EU. We often hear the following questions from non-EU operators: “We have earlier chosen to fully import our aircraft into the EU will we now have to fully import the same aircraft into the UK?” and “Shall we fully import a potential new 2021 aircraft into both the EU and the UK?” There is no logic behind fully importing an aircraft into every new economic zone or country that the aircraft flies to. A full importation should only be performed if you “have to” as you commit to only use the aircraft in a very limited way. Please, try to imagine the scenario complying with 2 or 3 different and conflicting sets of regulations on how to handle non-business use correctly, which will be the situation. Take, for example, if a US part 91 operator chooses to import in both the EU and the UK. The FAA rules are often conflicting with the EU/UK rules for the mentioned area. It is also a common misunderstanding that a full importation is a one-off transaction. Any wrong use can have a huge economic impact with a future VAT/tax-liability for up to 5 to 7 years. Our suggestion is that you simply always use TA, if possible.
These aircraft registrations can be used in 2021 within the EU for Temporary Admission The UK (G-reg), Isle of Man (M-reg), and the Channel Islands (2/ZJ-reg) will no longer be part of the EU customs territory and can therefore be used for TA. This is indeed positive news.
These aircraft registrations can be used in 2021 within the UK for Temporary Admission All the national aircraft registrations belonging to the EU27 member states can be used for TA.
Temporary Admission is easy, both within the EU and the UK
The use of the Supporting Document is not mandatory when arriving. Just remember that an operator must always be ready to document the following: 1. the flight pattern within the EU and the UK (use the Supporting Document and flight logs OR just flight logs, etc.) 2. compliance with the TA regulation; all criteria are met with the correct application of the limitations TA can be used for aircraft where the purpose is private, corporate, or charter, both for a single entry and on internal flights. This has several times been confirmed by the EU Commission.
How can OPMAS help - including our free service
We will be glad to prepare the Supporting Document (SD) for both the EU and the UK with the correct declarant and aircraft data on the correct form so that the crew can use the SD themselves and ask local customs at the arriving airport to stamp the SD. This is available at no charge. We also offer an analysis of the owner/user/operator scenario to secure compliance with the TA regulation and provide guidance for the correct use of the TA. ❙

RAISBECK: TAKING THE 90 SERIES KING AIR TO NEW LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE Raisbeck Engineering has been designing and certifying performance enhancement systems for the Beechcraft King Air family since 1982. The company’s legacy of engineering expertise, innovation and customer support has built a solid reputation for enhancing the performance and utility of the world’s most popular business turboprop. No matter which 90 Series King Air model you operate, Raisbeck’s EPIC PERFORMANCE PACKAGE is the most cost-effective solution for operators who seek improved performance, increased payload and operational flexibility out of shorter runways and hot-high scenarios. Engineered and certified as a bundle, Raisbeck’s Swept Blade Turbofan Propellers, Dual Aft Body Strakes and Gross Weight Increase offer operators improved performance gains and value. In fact, every new C90GTx, LJ-2121 and after, are factory-equipped with the EPIC Performance Package! The 90 Series EPIC Performance Package will truly transform your aircraft with new levels of improved takeoff and landing field length performance, higher engine operating ITTs for better climb and cruise performance as well as a quieter cabin and cockpit. The following table of FAA-certified performance data shows the capabilities of even the latest King Air C90GT/GTi/GTx models, as well as C90/A/B models equipped with PT6A-135A engines, are improved across the board by Raisbeck’s 90 Series EPIC Package: TAKEOFF DISTANCE
WHAT’S INCLUDED? Raisbeck’s SWEPT BLADE TURBOFAN PROPELLERS (SBTP) feature larger (96˝) diameter propellers that produce more thrust while reducing noise and vibration by eliminating undesirable drag and prop tip noise. Constructed of high-strength 4-blade aluminum forgings, Raisbeck’s Swept Blade Propellers boost performance in all flight phases with dramatic improvements in runway acceleration, accel-stop, engine-out climb, landing deceleration, and prop reversing. Factory installed on new C90GTx production aircraft, DUAL AFT BODY STRAKES (DABS) improve directional stability, enhancing passenger comfort and pilot control while reducing drag for improved climb and cruise performance. As an OEM feature, Dual Aft Body Strakes have come to define the look of the modern C90GTx and 350/360 King Air. GROSS WEIGHT INCREASE (GWI) raises Maximum Takeoff Weight to 10,500 pounds and landing weights to 9,700 pounds for all C90 Series King Airs starting with LJ-527 and after, and the E90. Optional CROWN WING LOCKERS (CWLS) add 17 cubic feet of external cargo storage capable of carrying up to 600 pounds total cargo including skis, fishing rods and golf bags along with luggage.
All Raisbeck Performance Systems and EPIC Packages are fully compatible with all leading aftermarket modifications including engine upgrades and digital flight displays.

Atlas Air Service's Role in Bringing in Germany's First Embraer Phenom 100EV
RAS Completions / Interiors Ltd London Biggin Hill Airport www.rascompletions.co.uk Atlas Air Service supported the purchase, inspection, acceptance and import of the first Embraer Phenom 100EV for Germany. Starting from the manufacturer's plant in Melbourne (Florida, USA), the light jet landed in Norfolk (USA) for American export customs clearance. Afterwards the life rafts, which are required for an Atlantic crossing, were picked up in Bangor (USA). After further stopovers the jet finally landed in Bremen. Atlas Air Service took care of the technical acceptance of the aircraft at the manufacturer's facility, organised the transfer, and managed all necessary import, customs and registration formalities in Germany. The Bremen-based company will also be responsible for monitoring the airworthiness (CAMO) and maintaining the aircraft. The Phenom 100EV is the latest development of the previous version with a
larger aisle range, and robust stairway. In addition, more powerful engines allow an increased top speed of 405 knots and a range of 2,182 km. The cockpit is equipped with the Prodigy Touch avionics package, which is based on the Garmin G3000 and is typically installed in the bigger Phenom 300. The Prodigy Touch is the first touchscreen flight deck to be found in a light jet. Atlas Air Service has turned 50 this year and has established a Europe-wide reputation for the aircraft brands Embraer, Cessna and Beechcraft. "We really do offer all the services required for a complex aircraft purchase transaction: Consulting, purchase brokerage, certification, maintenance, aircraft management and charter. With many years of experience we have handled countless aircraft transactions - our customers appreciate our quality and independence," said Hans Doll, Director Sales at Atlas Air Service AG.

Eastern Atlantic Helicopters to Run European Office of Aviation Sales International KING AIR B200
FOR SALE
The sales team behind Eastern Atlantic Helicopters, Simon Oliphant-Hope and Jamie Chalkley, have increased the pulse of their sales radar to now extend and provide cover in an exciting new move to work with rotary- and fixed-wing sales company, Aviation Sales International (ASI). Simon and Jamie, while still running Eastern Atlantic, will now also run the European office of ASI, thus surging forward with a huge range of aircraft for buyers throughout Europe as well as now providing cross-platform brokerage sales opportunities to existing owners looking to either sell or move into something else.
Who is ASI? BOMBARDIER GLOBAL XRS
FOR SALE
So who is ASI? The founder is a South African aviation businessman by the name of Angus Money who, together with Nico Grobbelaar, heads up this fast-expanding global sales company. With offices in Johannesburg, Singapore, and now the UK, ASI has strategic coverage for the African continent, Asia-Pacific region, and now Europe, via the UK.
CITATION MUSTANG
FOR SALE
The ASI concept has been to find experienced sales teams in well-placed locations in order to expand services around the world. Each office brings with it not just the experience of the personnel based at that location, but also all of the accumulated knowledge and, most interestingly, the contacts and connections of those people, such that global coverage really is an achievable position to reach and maintain. Between the team there is almost nothing that can’t be found or dealt with given the vastness of contacts and collective experience. ASI approached Simon and Jamie (already existing customers of ASI) during the early part of lockdown and while navigating that unprecedented time, a new European team was formed and has settled comfortably into today’s ready-to-perform global team.
AIRBUS EC120
FOR SALE
If you don’t already know Simon and Jamie, here’s their background: Eastern Atlantic Helicopters was started by Simon in 1994 with Jamie joining the team in 2001, primarily to project manage Simon’s record-breaking around the world flight. Both Simon and Jamie are commercially rated pilots and instructors and have experience flying multiple types. Eastern Atlantic is best known in the Enstrom and MD Helicopter market as well as having a lot of experience with the Bell range (and the odd Bond movie!) Over the years, Eastern Atlantic also crossed into the world of fixed-wing aircraft with various corporate jet sales taking place and, at one time, the company even owned its own Citation, operating the aircraft for just under two years. Together Simon, Jamie, Eastern Atlantic and ASI make a formidable team with real-time global presence. Their combined experience, resources, knowledge and wealth of personal connections brings together a sales force to be reckoned with. Whether you’re buying, selling, looking for parts, charter or just need plane old advice (no pun intended!), contact the team today.

Thales’s Reality H flight simulator for the new Airbus Helicopters H160 has achieved a key milestone with Level D Full Flight Simulator (FFS) certification by the French civil aviation authority (DGAC). Reality H ensures that pilots benefit from high-level training with the most comprehensive and versatile simulation equipment on the market. The simulator incorporates Airbus Helicopters’ flight models and the Helionix avionics suite. It also features various Thales innovations to “make training exercises more immersive and realistic than ever for pilots and instructors,” says Airbus Helicopters. These include a unique allelectric motion system to reproduce physical sensations realistically and ensure smooth movements; the intuitive Alexia touchscreen interface for instructors; 4K high-definition imagery with a wide field of view to train pilots in an even more realistic environment; high-fidelity simulation models and flight instruments; and the capacity to create a broad range of training scenarios, including operational exercises in extreme conditions. The Thales Reality H simulator has been installed at the Helisim centre in Marignane, near Marseille, where pilot training was due to start in September.

R66
Serial Number 1000
The R66 Turbine Marine delivers the same power and performance as a standard R66 but with inflatable pop-outs floats for overwater travel.
R66 Turbine 1060 TXi instrument console with Garmin GTN 750Xi and SAS/Autopilot.
In July, Robinson delivered its 1000th R66 Turbine helicopter. A significant milestone that demonstrates the R66 is the top performer and leader in its class. Powered by the Rolls Royce RR300 turbine engine, the R66 recently surpassed 1. 2 million flight hours without a single reported in-flight engine failure. This accomplishment demonstrates a level of reliability that exceeds EASA’s stringent requirements for single-engine helicopters. A derivative of the Alison 250 series, the RR300 features a simplified single-stage centrifugal compressor for high reliability and less maintenance. The engine burns Jet A fuel, at a rate of approximately 23 U.S. gallons (87 liters) per hour. In 2007, Frank Robinson announced the R66 after a deal was struck with Rolls Royce to develop the RR300 engine. The R66 was FAA certified in October 2010 and the first production R66 was delivered the following month. Since then, the R66 has proven itself on a daily basis and has risen to the challenges of flying to the North Pole and circumnavigating the globe multiple times. S/N 1000 was delivered to Robinson dealer Les Gillespie of Gardner Aviation. When asked about the R66, Gillespie said, “Because the R66 can be configured to meet the needs of any pilot or helicopter flight department, it quickly became our number-one selling helicopter.” Today’s R66 is also available in police, news, and float configurations. Options include air conditioning, cargo hook, lithium-ion battery, fuel flow system, auxiliary fuel tanks, impact resistance windshields, state-of-the-art touchscreen avionics, and a SAS/autopilot, making it a multipurpose helicopter suitable for private and commercial applications.
Small auxiliary tank installed in the R66’s baggage compartment.
R66 Impact-resistant windshield
Touchscreen Avionics & SAS Autopilot
The R66 is available with Garmin’s latest TXi displays and GPS/COM/NAV GTN Xi navigators. Genesys HeliSAS autopilot is also an option offering heading hold, altitude hold, navigation signal tracking, and approach guidance.
Auxiliary Fuel Tanks
Two sizes, large and small, of auxiliary fuel tanks are offered. The small fuel tank holds 23.2 gallons (88 liters), adds approximately 1 hour to helicopter endurance, and extends its range by as much as 100 nautical miles (115 statute miles). The large tank holds 43-gallons, adds approximately 2 hours to helicopter endurance, and extends the helicopter’s range by as much as 200 nautical miles (230 statute miles).
Impact-Resistant Windshields
R66 Impact-resistant windshields provide protection from bird strikes.
Cargo Hook
The cargo hook carries external loads up to 1200 lb and, for external load operations, the R66’s maximum gross weight increases from 2700 lb to 2900 lb. The cargo hook installation includes right and left-seat controls, allowing for solo flight from either seat.

Maintaining Lift How Boeing supports the helicopter lifecycle Boeing is known around the world as a leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners, defence, space, and security systems, and a service provider of aftermarket support. In recent years, Boeing has focused on expanding its services capabilities by bringing Aviall, ForeFlight, Jeppesen, KLX and other companies into the Boeing family. Operating under the Boeing Global Services (BGS) business unit, Boeing is able to provide a broad range of products, services and solutions to meet the needs of the global helicopter market. Boeing provides integrated flight operations and technical solutions to its global customers in the civil, commercial and military rotorcraft market, and helps operators maintain and sustain their rotorcraft throughout their lifecycles.
Innovative Service Strategy Boeing’s storied history of more than 100 years of building airplanes drives the services and solutions it provides to the helicopter OEM business. Whether it’s a helicopter OEM or a supplier to a manufacturer, Boeing has the right answer to today’s challenges.
With more than two million parts in stock and 3,000 suppliers around the world, Boeing spans all areas of consumables, chemicals, and specialty materials in the aviation production space. All products are fully traceable and compliant with international environmental standards. And with 24/7/365 AOG shipping capability in Dallas and Hamburg, parts arrive quickly and efficiently to support supply chains and production capabilities. Boeing continues to develop an innovative, proactive and progressive service strategy. It merges the parts and products world with the services and solutions world. By taking this holistic approach, Boeing is uniquely equipped to service complete external and internal supply chains, and help solve logistics challenges.
Analysis, Forecasting, and Planning Boeing can even partner with customers to analyse internal value streams by mapping As-Is and the To-Be states from planning to Point of Use (PoU). Changes, investments and business decisions are brought together in an interactive, tailored and collaborative project for transitioning to new suppliers and processes. During the analysis process, potential risks are clearly defined and captured, so the teams can address them at the earliest opportunity, while ensuring fast execution with no interruption to production. Boeing’s vast manufacturing experience and inventory management tools set the foundation for accurate forecasting and planning. Backed by data analytics and competitive pricing within the aerospace market, Boeing’s tools help customers with their decision-making and process automation, leading to lower costs and more efficiency.
Helicopter Operators and Lessors Jeppesen provides global data and chart services (some coverages are available with helicopter procedures) including NavData, Terrain, Obstacles and OEMsupplied data. Tailored data is also available for certain unique operational needs. Jeppesen electronic charts can be used on mobile devices and/or on front panel multi-function displays, which provides redundancy and improved cockpit workflows. ForeFlight’s leading mobile apps are well-known in the U.S. market, and now the European helicopter community is starting to realise the benefits ForeFlight can bring to their operations. ForeFlight Mobile combines the most advanced flight app with powerful rotorcraftspecific features that support a variety of mission profiles. Supplemented with International Trip Planning from Jeppesen and the ForeFlight Dispatch service, all business aspects of an operation are covered. When managing leased assets, Boeing is able to provide Lease Data Management and Technical Records-Management services. Digitising and reviewing data for redelivery compliance is part of the work by Boeing’s experienced specialists. They perform near-live completeness reviews to let lessors stay on top of their technical records.
Training Schools and Academies Even with the recent global challenges associated with the Covid-19 pandemic, helicopter operations remain essential around the world. Helicopter flight activities dropped only slightly, and in June 2020, exceeded the number of movements recorded in June 2019. And continued operation means continued demand for helicopter trainees. 26 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2020

Worldwide Service Network Boeing strives to offer a wide range of services to helicopter operators and maintenance technicians within this fast-growing community. As of today, service stations are conveniently located around the world in multiple countries, ensuring their customers have easy access should an urgent need arise. Many of Boeing’s current services within the helicopter industry include: rotables, hose fabrication, kitting, battery repair, chemical management, and wheel and brake repair maintenance.
The LIFT Programme Training offerings from Jeppesen are helping to meet these market demands with courseware and knowledge test materials for new or advancing helicopter pilots. Flight schools and training academies benefit from Jeppesen’s integrated learning system by delivering flexible training options with self-study, ground school and distance learning in today’s virtual environment. Various platforms (Windows, MacOS and iOS) are supported in online as well as offline versions. Through a simple, intuitive and informative user interface, schools and students can keep track of all content and progress made throughout the course.
MRO and Aftermarket Boeing has the expertise and ability to assist in specialised repair and exchange solutions. A number of benefits that aim to drive additional value, but reduce cost to the consumer, are key. Some of these benefits include: regionalised stocking of high-demand parts to ensure accessibility and availability is maintained; credible support from more than 240 product lines; and convenient, effortless ordering through shop.boeing.com (or Electronic Data Interchange (EDI)). Boeing has a large range of offerings within the rotables industry, and its classified inventory of helicopter parts and accessories is incredibly vast. Within Boeing’s expansive catalog, consumers have direct access to more than two million parts to cater to customer requests and needs when it comes to maintenance and quality control.
LIFT is an exclusive programme Boeing currently offers to provide needed services to companies who utilise sizable or diverse helicopter fleets. With its integration fifteen years ago, Boeing recognised an opportunity to expand its general helicopter inventory to support this much-needed initiative. A highly qualified customer support team will carefully analyse a customer’s fleet, methods of current operation and outlined locations. Boeing’s exceptionally trained team will then uncover and recommend helpful solutions that provide adequate support and cost-reduction measures. These defined solutions are then prioritised into a cohesive plan of action that is tailored to the unique needs of each customer. By utilising the LIFT program, customer benefits are exponential. Fewer suppliers and purchase points are needed. There is also a noted decrease in overall purchasing costs when services are rendered. With strategic global stocking locations in place, local inventory needs are consistently adequate for customers. An accurate and heavily stocked inventory is in place, thereby often diminishing work stops. With an extremely accurate transaction process, Boeing has been able to put into place through this noteworthy program an acutely efficient and meticulous transaction processing, alleviating the probability of manual errors. By providing support before and after a sale, Boeing is able to ensure the longevity of rotorcraft by ensuring customer satisfaction is top priority.
This allows consumers to purchase materials from Boeing directly without having to shop multiple distributors, which streamlines the procurement process and reduces downtime. Parts range from test equipment, to headsets, to emergency and safety materials. Rolls-Royce lists Boeing as an exclusive distributor for their M250 and RR300 engines, including spare parts and tooling. This sole partnership garners a valuable selection of trusted, reliable parts available to consumers within the helicopter industry.
Offering USM Parts
Boeing entered the USM market as a natural extension of being a manufacturer and service provider. It began the programme with many offerings from the Bell helicopter models, including major drive train components, avionics, and airframe items for the B206, B407, B212 and B412. Based on the success of those programmes and overall customer demand, Boeing expanded into the AS350 B2 platform. Boeing continues to evaluate future platforms to be used for parts supply and fleet support as part of its one-stopshop services model. Boeing continues to acquire parts for the USM programme through multiple avenues including teardowns, consignment and brokering. Many of Boeing’s suppliers are OEM-approved and under strict contract in order to ensure all expectations of their consumers are met. With a broad rotable exchange pool currently available, Boeing is able to help reduce incurred maintenance downtime and inventory investment. Boeing has the distinct ability to scale this programme rapidly, and is incredibly enthusiastic about its future.
Learn More
In addition to OEM-certified new parts and spares, Boeing now offers Used Serviceable Material (USM) that exceeds company standards. This capability was born from an understanding of the needs within the rotorcraft community for a lower cost alternative when performing routine maintenance and service. It also includes an expansive list of USM for single-engine light helicopters.

Managing Yachts & Helicopters: an Easy Mix? In almost every area, yacht and helicopter regulations are different, so how can owners manage the difficult task of successfully operating in both worlds?
By Charlotte Pedersen, CEO, Luxaviation Helicopters Cleverly and lucratively combining yacht and helicopter operations is a hot trend right now. And, based on our experiences at Luxaviation Helicopters, it’s a trend set to continue and thrive for years ahead. Often, we’re supporting companies with demanding transportation needs or private individuals sailing around the Mediterranean or Caribbean. Sometimes, though, our clients have particularly adventurous requirements. Presently, for example, we’re working on a project to provide commercial helicopters for an expeditionary cruise ship heading to locations from Greenland to Antarctica. With capacity for 200 passengers, the ship will carry two helicopters for trips to shore and medevac missions if necessary.
Find the Right Helicopter and Pilots You’ll need to choose a suitable helicopter for maritime missions. We always stress to clients the reliability of twin-engine helicopters for yacht operations. Twin engines provide much more than just doubling up on your systems: you also get autopilot equipment and IFR capability which, combined, provides you with a much safer operation at sea. In fact, in many places, including the UK, it’s a requirement to have a twin-engine helicopter to fly commercially to a yacht.
And so, as operating yachts and helicopters together grows in popularity, we find that we’re being involved in discussions at an increasingly early stage.
Two Sets of Regulations Firstly, owners must understand the need to comply with both yacht and helicopter regulations. A helideck on a yacht might, for example, be certified correctly (to meet yachting regulations) for a specific type of helicopter but have the aviation regulations for operating the helicopter to and from that deck been met too?
An expert management company can, for example, quickly advise on the need for a different kind of float on a potential client’s planned helicopter purchase, saving money on expensive future alterations. Owners should always take professional guidance to avoid overlooking critical requirements.
Yacht regulations only cover the operation/interaction of the vessel with the helideck, not the actual operation of the helicopter.
Smart manufacturers even take input on yacht operations from managers and operators when planning new helicopters to avoid costly and time-consuming redesigns.
You might, for example, have carefully checked your yacht regulations and found that they make no mention of needing lights on the helideck. But what if you would like to fly at night? Have you overlooked the complementary aviation regulations, which stipulate that for night operations the helideck must not only have lights, but that those lights must be dimmable?
32 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2020
Early Advice is Invaluable As in so many areas of transportation management and operation, planning is critical when working with yachts and helicopters. Good advice at the start of a project minimises the need for costly work and refits later.
So what should owners know when bringing the maritime and aviation worlds together?
Local regulations vary too, which could cause frustrations and restrictions as you travel the world if you’re not working with a globally knowledgeable and experienced management company, operator and crew.
Safe helicopter operations to and from sailing vessels demand highly qualified, experienced pilots. What else might you need from the pilot, though? Perhaps someone who is trained to fly in snowy, mountainous terrain, so you can take skiing trips? And, if you're travelling globally, you need a pilot who understands the local regulations and can speak the local language of wherever you’re flying to and from. Above all, you need an instrument rated pilot who can take you safely from A to B, even if the weather changes.
Commercial Gains
www.luxaviation.com
It’s important to know regulations are particularly strict if you wish to charter your yacht and helicopter. But the financial benefits of helicopter and yacht ownership together are beyond dispute, not just in chartering income, but also in the fact a helideck increases a vessel’s resale value (especially if certified for commercial operations). Castle Air Corrects Some Misconceptions About Helicopter Operations
Castle Air Group have been providing VIP Charter missions for the last 45 years out of three facilities, one based in the South West, one conveniently based at Biggin Hill Airport, London and one at Gloucestershire Airport reaching Southern Ireland, France and Europe. It is a proven solution for the most convenient way to get people around whether passengers are going to meetings, city breaks, sporting events or family retreats. We are market leaders offering eight A109’s and now the AW139. Here are our answers to the top queries we get, to help you better understand helicopter operations:
1. Can you only land at an airport/airfield? A common misperception is that helicopters can only land at airports and airfield following the correct guidelines, however, that is not the case. On most occasions the passengers have sufficient space within their property grounds to allow safe landings and take off, completely surpassing other modes of transport. We use thousands of landing sites like helipads, estates, field and golf clubs and are constantly expanding on these to offer a better choice of pickup/drop off points. The option of landing off airfield can often be a more cost-effective solution for the client, saving on landing fees and handling charges.
2. Do I have to pack light? Whatever you need a helicopter for we have the capability to suit your needs. The AW139 with its flexible cabin and large hold allows you to carry up to 300kg of luggage with either seven or nine passengers whilst the A109 with a six seat configuration offers a hold of 200kg.
3. Do helicopters only work for short trips? The AW109 and AW139 are more capable than you think. Often people assume helicopters are only effective for short trips such as Biggin Hill to Battersea, but did you know we can fly from London to Paris? The AW109 has a range of 2hr 20 minutes and the AW139 a range of 3hrs.
4. Is it safe? All our aircraft are twin-engine with IFR rating, giving maximum safety in the air allowing us to fly both night and day and in bad or good weather. During these present times each helicopter has protective screens and are sanitised before each flight. Each pilot is tested daily for Covid-19.
5. What kind of people do we fly? We fly everyone…taking approximately six minutes to fly from Castle Air Biggin Hill to Battersea, business passengers can be taken directly in to the heart of the city without stress and time wasted on the roads and rails. Chartering can be quite seasonal with such interests as game shooting, horse racing and music festivals which find us extremely busy during these times. We employ permanent pilots and there is always one on standby and ready to fly within an hours’ notice. We often meet private jets, landing the helicopter within 20 steps of the plane so the customers journey is seamless. If its convenience, privacy and flexibility the customers are looking for then we offer all of this making it a comfortable and relaxed journey. To find out more and to book, please visit www.castleair.co.uk or speak to your travel planning department or broker.

GAMA.qxp_Layout 1 12/10/2020 10:30 Page 1
GAMA Data Show Mixed Picture For 2020 Airplane Shipments The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) released its Q2 business aircraft shipment report recently, and though the numbers were disappointing, in light of the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic they were not surprising, says analyst Mike Potts. Total, worldwide GA aircraft (jet, turboprop and piston) shipments in H1 2020 amounted to 893 units, down 21.5% from the 1,137 units delivered in H1 2019. Billings were $7.9bn, down 20.2% from the $9.9bn recorded last year. The downturn was not shared equally among the aircraft segments, however: • •
•
Jet deliveries for H1 2020 were down almost 26.7% (244 units versus 333 in H1 2019). Turboprops (as listed by GAMA) were the hardest hit segment, down 34.2% (152 units versus 231 units in H1 2019). Actual business turboprops were hit even harder, as we will discuss... Piston-powered aircraft were comparatively unscathed, down only 13.3% from the prior year, totaling 497 this year versus 573 in H1 2019.
The Turboprop Market Turboprops were already in trouble before COVID-19 came along, so it is a little hard to tell how much to blame on the pandemic and how much is due a falling demand for business turboprops in general. There is little doubt that COVID has accelerated the problem, however. Like the jet market, the turboprop segment has a new market leader: Pilatus. In fact, there has been a fairly significant re-ordering of positions since the end of last year. At the close of 2019 Textron’s Beechcraft unit was the leader, while Pilatus and Textron’s Cessna unit tied for second with Daher in fourth. Now, behind Pilatus is Beech (second), with Daher (third), and Cessna, level with Piper, in fourth place.
Weak Turboprop Sales Business turboprops as listed by GAMA are down 34.2%, but in fact the damage is much worse than that. The agricultural airplanes, which GAMA continues to group with the more traditional business turboprops, were only down 10%. Taken by themselves, the traditional business turboprops are down 44.72% (89 units in H1 2020 against 161 units for H1 2019). In rising to the number one position, Pilatus is doing very well compared to the rest of the market, having delivered 29 airplanes in H1 2020 compared to 31 a year ago. The Q2 result was even better, with 18 deliveries, down just one unit from the 19 shipped in Q2 2019. Second-placed Beechcraft had a much harder time, with 20 deliveries in H1 2020, down from 39 the year
34 PISTON BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2020
before (a reduction of 48.72%). In Q2 Beechcraft had nine deliveries, down from 16 a year earlier. Daher, meanwhile, achieved third place in business turboprop deliveries with 15, compared with 32 the year before. Eleven of Daher’s 15 units came in Q2. Tied for fourth place are traditional competitors Piper and Cessna. Each reported 11 deliveries for the halfyear period. In H1 2019 Cessna had 39, which at the time tied for first place with Beechcraft, while Piper had a more modest 14. For Q2 2020, Piper had eight while Cessna had six. Sixth place went to newcomer Epic with three units (two in Q2), and tied in seventh were Pacific Aerospace and Piaggio, neither of which reported any airplane deliveries this year. At this time last year Pacific Aero had four and Piaggio two.
Piston Did Better… The piston aircraft market seems to have been the least affected by COVID-19, perhaps because many of the piston airplanes being built today are earmarked for training fleets. While the overall segment numbers are down by 9.6 percent, of the 15 companies reporting piston deliveries to GAMA this half, four have positive results and at least two posted what can legitimately be called significant gains. Another company reported even results, but 10 recorded fewer sales than a year ago. So while there are some bright spots, overall the news isn’t particularly good. Unlike the other two segments, the same leader that finished out last year, Cirrus, is still easily ahead this year. Interestingly, though, the gap between number one and number two is not as wide as it was this time last year. In fact, unlike the prior three or four years, the gap between Cirrus and Cessna is narrow enough that it is not inconceivable that Cessna could catch up.
Can Cessna Catch Cirrus? For decades Cessna was the unchallenged leader in building piston single-engine aircraft. The company doesn’t like being number two; I know because they told me so! Anyway, for the moment at least Cirrus is ahead. It has recorded 128 deliveries so far this year, compared with 172 last year. For the second quarter Cirrus had 61, against 106 a year ago.
Cessna was in second place with 107 at the end of the first half of 2020, so at mid-year they were are only trailing Cirrus by 21 units. Last year, at the same waypoint, the gap was 106. Somewhat incredibly, Cessna’s numbers are actually up this year by a significant margin. With 107 airplanes delivered, Cessna leads last year’s total of 66 by 62.12 percent. At the same time the Cirrus total is down by 25.58 percent, so it is pretty clear how the gap between them is narrowing. With a motivated number two chasing a lagging but still very strong number one, it will be interesting to see how the balance of this year plays out in the piston market.
Piper Leads the Rest… Number three in piston deliveries for the first half of this year is Piper with 68 units, down from 89 the year before. For the second quarter alone, however, Piper reported 50 deliveries, up more than 6.38 percent from the 47 the company had a year ago – not a huge gain but in this market any improvement deserves to be applauded. Diamond, in the number four position for piston deliveries, did have a significant gain. With 55 deliveries at the end of the first half Diamond was up 14.58 percent over the 48 it reported a year ago. In the second quarter alone Diamond had 41 deliveries, up more than 38.48 percent from 31 in the same period last year. Tecnam is in fifth place with 46 deliveries, down slightly from the 51 the Italian manufacturer reported last year. The company had 22 in the second quarter, down from 26 in the prior year. German manufacturer Extra delivered 10 aircraft in the first half to capture sixth place. That was down from 14 the year before. Newcomer Sonaca is in seventh place with six deliveries so far this year. The Belgian company reported eight deliveries for the whole of last year but didn’t provide a breakout by quarters. It seems reasonable to suppose, however, that with six in the first half so far they are likely to finish the year in positive numbers. If they do they’ll be among very few companies in our industry to accomplish that feat. Rounding out the piston market are eight companies that have delivered fewer than five aircraft so far this year. They include Textron’s Beechcraft unit with four; American Champion with three; Pipistrel with three; Waco with two; Cubcrafter with one; and AVIC, Mahindra and Mooney all with zero. I

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Quote, says Approach Aviation Insurance. Many businesses are guilty of not requesting insurance quotes in good time when approaching renewal dates, and often end up paying higher renewal premiums. Don't just wait for your existing insurer to send their renewal quote… act well in advance! According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) / Approach Aviation Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”
PRODUCT LIABILITY COVER Approach Aviation Insurance can also arrange product liability cover, for example it is in discussions about providing such cover for the Aircrew traffic-awareness system for light aircraft. Pictured are Chris Varley (left) and James Rose (right), inventor of the new device (see www.aircrew.co.uk). The company has also provided product liability insurance for other aviation products such as heavy duty batteries/starter devices. Please contact us for a quote on +44 (0)7973 509961.
ABOUT APPROACH AVIATION INSURANCE
“Last-minute requests mean it’s unlikely we can find you competitive cover. And once you have renewed it will not be economic to swap insurance providers until the next annual renewal.”
Approach Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General insurance Services Limited (E&G), The Clubhouse, Wimbledon Rugby Football Club Limited, Barham Road, London SW20 0ET.
Varley says that Approach Aviation Insurance takes a broad view of business cover in the aviation sector, and is happy to ‘audit’ a business for its risk-cover needs, even if that includes aircraft, hangars, PI cover, etc.

Registering in Trust: How These
Best Practices Can Ensure a Smooth
Aircraft Transaction Aircraft transactions can be complex and take a while to close, as mentioned by our sister company, Wright Brothers Aircraft Title. But why – and more importantly, how – can we fix that? And registering an aircraft in trust can sometimes add to the complexity of a closing, but it does not have to if the transaction itself is as sound as it possibly can be. We are constantly looking for ways to save our clients time and money, with efficient and secure practices. Over the years, we have dealt with numerous issues involved in buying and selling an aircraft, and registering in trust, that we believe can be remedied – providing a smoother closing. We do not, however, need to reinvent the wheel here. After all, many other industries have seemingly been able to streamline their sales process and reduce the time it takes to close, with three common business practices – standardisation, transparency, and automation.
Standardisation One of the things that can make aircraft transactions complicated is simply putting together a purchase agreement. There can be a big lag between the Letter of Intent (LOI) and the aircraft purchase agreement. Sometimes, the escrow company will not receive the agreement (which contains the specifics of the deal) until the day before closing. Time is needed, however, to study the aircraft purchase agreement and make sure everything is followed properly – one day is not enough and can wreak havoc on the closing. Similarly, a lag can occur with the pre-buy process and inspections, where items can be found that must be fixed. On the flip side, some transactions can go from LOI to the aircraft purchase agreement and close in a matter of days. It depends on whether the aircraft is ready, and whether the buyer has their funds in place. These things speak to the need for standardisation in aircraft transactions, from the purchase agreement itself to the processes followed, setting up the groundwork needed for registration. Aircraft transactions are often international with many entities involved – each with their own input and way of doing things. Our industry, accordingly, touts the need for tailored transactions, often unnecessarily complicating the process. The details of a deal can be upheld in a standard format though – making the specifics easier to spot and follow through on. This is why Aircraft Guaranty uses standardised trust documents that have been pre-approved by the FAA. The use of standard language within a standard framework allows parties to address the real outliers of a transaction more quickly. Additionally, standardised documents could streamline getting from an LOI to an aircraft purchase agreement – eliminating the need to weed through a 45-page contract to potentially find something unexpected buried within. It would accordingly make registration paperwork more efficient as well.
Transparency In addition, many times the buyer will put their personal funds into the deposit, and then set up a company to own and operate the aircraft, which can also cause a delay – setting up a new company and then vetting that company. While that company could easily be the beneficiary of a trust, transparency is essential for registering in trust. Another issue can occur if the buyer decides to pursue financing late in the transaction – it usually does not work out well and can ground the transaction altogether. After all, appraisals and inspections of the aircraft take time, along with adhering to Know Your Customer protocols, all of which a financier will require. While wanting anonymity in owning an aircraft is not unusual, it is just not possible when it comes to financing. Nor is anonymity an option in registering in trust. All parties, all the way down to the bottom, must be known – there must be true transparency. There is a lot that goes into purchasing, financing, and registering an aircraft. Ultimately, the financier, the escrow company, and the trust company must know the aircraft and the parties involved – and the sooner the better. It is important to have everything together financially, trust papers prepared, documents ready to file at the FAA, and parties registered on the IR, all in advance of closing.
Automation Automation can help speed and secure the closing and registration – allowing, for instance, a documented trail to follow in the exchange of information between parties. Many businesses use project management tools internally to track correspondence and procedures, which is of immense help, especially in the event of an error. The use of digital signatures via a secure platform is another great advancement in this respect – helping to close transactions quickly. The international nature of trust deals, with signatures to be gathered around the world, can really benefit from this development, and make things faster. This does not, however, take away from the due diligence required at the beginning of an aircraft transaction for safety and compliance at every step.
In Closing While the global nature of aviation, with multiple entities involved, will always have the potential to weigh down aircraft transactions, lift-off could be smoother with the adoption of these best practices across the industry. Standardisation, transparency, and automation are key in this endeavour, and Aircraft Guaranty Corporation is happy to be at the forefront of this push for progress and modernisation in the aviation industry, helping our clients register in trust.

Diamond Aircraft DA50 RG Receives EASA Certification Diamond Aircraft announced in early September that its DA50 RG single-engine piston aircraft with retractable gear had received certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). “This achievement marks a significant milestone in Diamond’s history as well as for the General Aviation community and paves the way for initial EASA customer deliveries in Q1/2021,” said the Austrian manufacturer (which is Chinese-owned). General Aviation’s new piston single features retractable gear, double-slotted flaps for high lift, and offers “superior slow-speed behaviour, remarkable handling and flight characteristics, and a spacious true five-seat luxury cabin with a generous rear baggage compartment,” said Diamond.
Green Credentials The aircraft has, according to the company, “striking ramp appeal and an environmentally conscious and fuel-efficient jet-fuel engine” and is “perfectly suited” to single-engine pilots looking for more seats and utility, as well as charter operators and corporate flight departments wanting to complement their larger aircraft with a low-cost alternative for shorter trips.
“We are extremely proud to have received EASA type certification for our single-engine flagship, the DA50 RG. The Diamond Aircraft team has done a tremendous job to make this possible,” said Liqun (Frank) Zhang, CEO at Diamond Aircraft Austria. “With the DA50 RG we are introducing an innovative 21st-century retract single that we are convinced the market is missing. Bringing the aircraft to the market is a great accomplishment that we are very pleased to celebrate with our Diamond Aircraft family and the aviation community all over the world. “We are simply overwhelmed by the huge interest, the number of enquiries and feedback we have been receiving for this game changer since the launch in June. We are looking forward to welcoming many proud DA50 RG pilots over the coming months and years,” concluded Zhang. The DA50 RG is powered by a twin-turbo-charged, liquid-cooled 6-cylinder 300 hp Continental CD-300 with Common Rail Direct Injection, offering a dual redundant FADEC (full authority digital engine control) system, integrated gearbox and propeller governor. The pilot benefits from easier engine operation, improved high-altitude performance, “globally available” jet fuel and very low fuel consumption — nine US gallons per hour (34.1 litres/hr) at maximum range.
60/40 split folding three-seat second row bench, premium materials in several styles and colours, middle armrest, overhead LED interior lighting and many optional features.
Avionics The DA50 RG features the latest development of Garmin’s G1000 product line the Garmin G1000 NXi with standard 3-axis GFC700 autopilot combined with simple single-lever power controls, offering great control and situational awareness reducing pilot workload. “First customer feedback has shown that the innovative package is going to meet the needs of almost any private pilot’s flight mission in an unrivalled way. The traveling experience aboard the DA50 RG impressively stands out in terms of space, convenience, luxury and aerodynamic efficiency due to the retractable gear,” said Reinhard Schwaiger, Team Leader Civil Aircraft Sales at Diamond Aircraft Austria. “We are now going to work on FAA certification that we are expecting by the end of 2021 and are very excited to present the aircraft to a thrilled US market,” he added.
Composite Fuselage The all-carbon composite airframe of the DA50 RG incorporates advanced aerodynamics with the latest in passive safety technology for high performance, great efficiency and superior occupant protection, says Diamond, which claims it is “durable, easily maintained and will keep looking great for many years to come… “The roomy luxury limousine-like interior features generous ergonomic genuine leather seats, a

The Surprising Role Aerial Work Aviation Plays in Environmental Protection By Patrick Ryan With growing concern about climate change and environmental pollution, how is the aviation industry playing its part in protecting our world? Patrick Ryan looks at this question and how Aerial Work aviation supports international and national efforts to understand, monitor, and combat environmental changes and pollution. Over the past few decades, the aviation sector is considered to have been a significant contributor to pollution, be it noise, CO2, hazardous waste, etc. However, at the same time, aviation has also been a significant player in protecting the environment. Aircraft manufacturers and other aviation stakeholders from General Aviation to airlines are currently developing and implementing new technologies and processes that are more environmentally friendly. Additionally, the Aerial Work sector is busy supporting many organisations and institutions worldwide to research the cause and effect of pollution, monitor changes in the environment, and enforce policies that protect humans and the planet. Within the effort to protect the environment equally at the local and international level, the primary areas Aerial Work aviation is currently supporting are surveying and monitoring; science and research; and enforcement.
Regarding these efforts, both manned and unmanned Aerial Work aircraft make a major contribution.
Science & Research
It is a primary necessity for many environmental protection government agencies, institutes, and nongovernmental organisations to understand the dynamics between Earth systems, flora, fauna, and humans. In this area, both manned and unmanned aircraft operate in the many fields of science such as geology (Earth structure), oceanography and hydrology (marine and freshwater systems), and atmospheric sciences (weather and climate). As an example, and there are many more, studying volcanoes is an essential and necessary activity which provides us with a deeper understanding of a part of the environment that can affect not only local inhabitants and eco-systems, but the whole world — in a flash, boom and plum of ash that floats around the world for years.
Studying Volcanoes
As we've seen in our lifetimes, volcanic eruptions have been devastating to both man and nature. The people who try to keep us ahead of knowing when a volcano becomes a threat are volcanologists. One of the significant jobs or aims of a volcanologist is to improve eruption hazard assessments and predictions. Capturing data on active volcanoes has been a challenge for volcanologists for a long time. Volcanoes present extraordinarily dangerous, volatile areas where the earth can fall beneath you, or globs of molten lava can suddenly fly at you at any moment. A critical tool volcanologists utilise to stay an arm’s length from trouble is both manned and unmanned Aerial Work aircraft. The specific types of operations Aerial Work aircraft provide are gas sampling, remote-sensing, and even airdropping sensors into or on to a volcano crater's edges. In the past, manned fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters were the primary platforms used by volcanologists.

However, with the advancement of unmanned aircraft, they are starting to rely on unmanned platforms to monitor deadly gases, ground deformation, and a volcano’s thermal activity. The bottom line is that Aerial Work platforms are doing the dirty and dangerous part of the volcanologist’s job. The primary type of unmanned aircraft used today are quadcopters (e.g., DJI, Inspire 1 Pro), octocopter (e.g., DJI, S1000+), and light fixed-wing platforms like the AeroVironment Dragon Eye used by NASA. However, with the expanding development of Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft, we are likely to see increasing use in the future of VTOL platforms by volcanologists for both practical/operational and economic reasons.
Surveying & Monitoring
Another critical effort for the environmental protection sector is monitoring, analysing and reporting the degradation or change of the land, water, vegetation and air components of the biosphere. The core of environmental surveying and monitoring involves evaluating specific environmental elements to control the risk of mankind’s interaction with the environment, and identify natural ecological trends. When it comes to aircraft and the environmental monitoring sector, the Aerial Work aviation sector allows specialists from all areas of the environmental protection community to leverage the unique capabilities that today’s flying machines provide. These aircraft provide the reach, view, and flexibility that land, sea and, in some cases, space systems cannot fulfill. With this, Aerial Work aircraft monitor a broad spectrum of efforts regarding protecting our environment. For example: • Monitoring rivers to help predict flooding • Identifying illegal logging • Monitoring the spread of algae in water bodies, as well as saltwater intrusion • Identifying bio-species and detecting forest tree disease • Identifying leaks in oil and gas production, and monitoring pipelines and wind/solar installations. • Tracking sea mammals, counting animal populations, and monitoring marine conservation areas. However, out of all the specific ways Aerial Work aircraft support the environmental surveying and monitoring sector, the number one area that directly affects every person on this planet is the air we breathe.
Measuring the Air
When it comes to measuring air (Ozone, Particles, SO2, NO2, NO, CO, and various meteorological parameters), most air measurement data come from ground measurements. However, Aerial Work aircraft enable scientists to gather additional critical data about pollution or the air’s health above our heads at different altitudes, which provides scientists with a comprehensive understanding of our air’s well-being. The primary types of aircraft Aerial Work aviation provides are manned fixedwing (propeller and jet) and unmanned balloon platforms. Fixed-wing aircraft and balloons give the environmental community the means to reach areas of the atmosphere that other vehicles cannot operate consistently and economically. Related to manned fixed-wing aircraft, they can measure not only vertical profiles by flying a wide spiral pattern above designated geographical locations, but they can also sample across large distances by flying transects between different geographical regions. Regarding the type of equipment these platforms carry, they’re configured with passive and active sensors that either capture actual air particles or measures them accordingly at altitude. The type of aircraft that you’ll see used to sample the atmosphere vary from GA light airplanes (e.g., Cessna - C182, Piper - PA-23 Apache/Aztec) to heavily modified widebody or specialised aircraft like the McDonnell Douglas DC-8, Gulfstream III, Beechcraft B200 King Air, and even the high-altitude Lockheed ER-2 (U-2). With unmanned aircraft, the primary type of platform used to measure the vertical profile (up to 100,000 feet) of the atmosphere is the balloon. In this case, they are free-flying latex or neoprene weather balloons filled with helium or hydrogen. The standard instrument packages these balloons can carry are ozonesondes, radiosondes, and navigation/tracking systems.
Enforcement
Besides understanding how the Earth’s biosphere works, and monitoring changes, the environmental protection sector also enforces laws established to protect human health and the environment.
CAMCOPTER S-100
Schiebel Camcopters Measure Ship Sulphur Emissions Unmanned air system (UAS) manufacturer Schiebel has reported successful results using a Camcopter S-100 to monitor ship emissions off the French coast. Working with its partners Nordic Unmanned and the NORCE Research Institute, Schiebel is nearing the end of a three-month operation to gather data on ship sulphur emissions for the French Maritime Authorities, checking that the emission levels from ships comply with European Union legislation. A Shiebel Camcopter S-100 has been flying over “one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, in the strait of Pas-de-Calais,” said the German company. Schiebel is contracted by the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to supports its Remotely Piloted Aircraft Service (RPAS), providing maritime surveillance services to EU member states and EU bodies. Through EMSA,
The environmental enforcement sector includes investigating timber thefts; endangered animal poaching; improper use or application of pesticides; commercial vehicles/facilities producing excessive emissions; wetland encroachment; illegal mining; and almost any area that affects air, land or water environment protection laws. page 50
Camcopter S-100s have also been operating in Denmark for emission monitoring and in Finland in support of the coast guard. In addition to the EMSA contract, Camcopters have been operated by the French Navy to conduct maritime surveillance. Hans Georg Schiebel, chairman of Schiebel Group, said: “Due to its multi-payload capacity, the applications for the S-100 are limitless. The sulphur- sniffing capability is one of the latest innovations and we are very proud to play such an important role in enforcing marine fuel sulphur content regulations.” The S-100 has a flight endurance of more than six hours and operates day and night. It is equipped with an Explicit mini sniffer sensor system, an ElectroOptical / Infra-Red (EO/IR) camera gimbal and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver.

Like environmental research and monitoring, environmental enforcement leverages both manned and unmanned aircraft to identify, track, and prosecute violators. The kinds of Aerial Work aircraft can vary widely from fingertip rotor nano unmanned (drone) platforms up to widebody fixed-wing manned jet aircraft. These Aerial Work aircraft’s operating areas can vary from hovering in confined ship structures, flying over vast national wildlife parks, to patrolling the world’s shipping lanes. Probably the most heavily invested and equipped environmental protection enforcement force is aerial maritime patrol. Over the past 30 years, nations worldwide have expanded their coast guards, border guards, and defense forces’ roles to included environmental enforcement. Their primary environmental mission is to battle marine water pollution — to protect their citizens, ecosystems, and economies from destructive oil spills and other hazardous contaminants.
Marine Water Pollution
When conducting water pollution missions, most aerial marine patrols focus on the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), and applicable national laws, to ensure ships don’t illegally dump liquid or solid waste into oceanic waters. Regarding the types of aircraft used in marine water pollution, one of the most common platforms is medium-range twin-engine transport aircraft modified with cameras and other types of surveillance systems, e.g., the CASA CN-235MP, Dornier DO328, De Havilland Canada Dash 8, and the Dornier Do 228 MP. In general, the mission profiles of these environmental enforcement patrols track ships traveling in waterways and looking for indications of oil spills or other forms of marine pollution. Specifically, aerial patrols are looking for oil or any pollution within the vicinity of a vessel, and anywhere in between.
In Summary
As you can see, the Aerial Work aviation sector plays a critical part in many global environmental protection efforts. Specifically, both manned and unmanned aircraft of all types are used to study the environment, monitor changes, and enforce the laws meant to protect or environment. Because of the unique capabilities that aircraft provide, the environmental protection community is more effective and efficient in its efforts. Even though the aviation sector is just one part of the global problem regarding climate change and environmental pollution, it is also part of the solution. Besides aircraft manufacturers and other aviation stakeholders developing and applying new technologies and more environmentally friendly methods, the Aerial Work aviation sector is on the front line, directly working with scientists, researchers, conservationists and many others to make a difference. Unless we can change planets, Aerial Work aviation will continue to help to preserve our one-and-only biosphere. I

TECNAM.qxp_GA 09/10/2020 13:00 Page 1
Tecnam Rolls Out P2012 Sentinel SMP Tecnam has unveiled the Special Mission version of the P2012 and is bullish about the prospects for its new aircraft in the market. The new Sentinel SMP (Special Mission Platform) aircraft unveiled recently by Italian aircraft manufacturer Tecnam is based on the “sleek, modern and seductive” P2012 Traveller, says the company.
A Sentinel equipped with full mission equipment, at its maximum takeoff weight of 3680 kg, will provide up to nine hours’ endurance for up to six 90kg-crew members, sensor operators and observers.
The Traveller was the reference platform to develop the P2012 Sentinel SMP, which Tecnam also describes as “the perfect combination of cutting-edge technology and efficiency with its unique Italian-style design” and “the ultimate Tecnam Special Mission Platform aircraft, without compromises on any front.”
Meanwhile the P2012’s twin-engine design provides an exhaust-free field of view to the sensors, granting increased accuracy and “noise-free” operations. The position of the hatches under the fuselage ensures a carbon-monoxidefree cabin that will enhance the safety of the crew members (one or two pilots and up to five mission operators).
Its colour scheme consists of air-superiority grey with black vertical fin and a dedicated logo, which Tecnam says “immediately recalls the aircraft’s vocation: being the earth’s Sentinel from the sky.” The company believes it has “elevated the already world-renowned Tecnam P2006T to the next level, thanks to a more capable and advanced surveillance platform for short- and medium-range operations.” It says that continuous investment in R&D, and the passion and attention to detail of the Tecnam engineers, has made it possible to reach such a high level of technology without having to settle on a “cost-effective” solution. “The result is a truly unique combo in the Special Mission Platform market.”
Following the P2012 SMP roll-out, Tecnam says it foresees increasing demand in the SMP market. “The Sentinel’s increased capabilities and superior efficiency in its role, coupled with its competitive entry price and operating costs, will allow the operator to perform the mission with results that were previously relegated only to higher-class platforms, and at costs that are just a fraction of those,” says the company. The Sentinel, as with all P2012 aircraft, benefits from the Tecnam “DREAM” concept: an aircraft built and designed for Durability, Reliability, Employability, Affordability and Manageability.
The P2012 Sentinel SMP, compared to the P2006T Twin SMP, integrates higher payloads, additional operator and observer stations and new capabilities, including approval for FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing), while simultaneously preserving the recognised Tecnam efficiency in mission accomplishment.
Tecnam says it has “even anticipated the growing desire for versatility” in that the P2012 Sentinel SMP can be equipped, upon a customer’s request, with a quick-conversion kit that transforms it from Special Mission Platform to the Airline version, providing up to 11 seats and the consolidated P2012 Traveller transport capabilities.
Whether it is used by a government or a private organisation, the operator will benefit from increased range, endurance, cabin volume and crew space, Tecnam says.
Giovanni Pascale Langer, Tecnam managing director, commented: “Tecnam is very proud to expand the Special Mission Platform offer with a highperformance but still cost-efficient solution to the market.
The company has also initiated a dedicated programme to integrate L3 Harris Wescam MX series electro-optical sensors on the new SMP platform.
“Here at Tecnam, we all recognise the importance of providing a high-capability platform that will allow our customers to perform aerial surveys and mapping as well as protect borders, save lives, and detect criminal operations.
“This will greatly improve the law-enforcement mission efficiency when performed with the P2012 Sentinel, taking advantage of its twin-engine safety and its capability of accommodating [in addition to one Wescam MX-10, MX15 or MX-20 turret] other mission sensors, such as a SAR radar, providing the P2012 SMP with the mission capabilities normally pertaining to CS/FAR 25 platforms at a fraction of their acquisition and operating costs.” The large cabin volume and payload will allow for excellent mission performance and plenty of space for sensors installation and operator’s console, Tecnam says.
“Our effort has been focused on the development of a system with higher-class capabilities at a fraction of their acquisition price, making such vital services accessible to those countries and operators that simply couldn’t afford them before.”

HORTON’S STACK DOOR
In 1955 Frank Horton, an avid flyer, was looking for a hangar door that met his needs, i.e.; easy to operate, bottom weighted, stacked out of the way, and requiring no electricity. Finding none, he designed and built his own. In 1976, the Horton Stack Door went into production. During the first nine years of operation the production of the Stack Door was contracted out to an independent shop with sales being handled in Wichita, Kansas. In 1976, with growing acceptance of the Horton Stack Door in the market, there became a growth period where Mr. Horton decided to start production of the Stack Doors in his own manufacturing plant. Also, in 1976, Horton Stack Door merged with what is now known as Horton STOL Craft and started
production of the Stack Doors at the Wellington Municipal Airport, where the plant is located today.
WHY THE STACK DOOR IS GREAT FOR ANY BUILDING! The Horton Stack Door installs on virtually any type of building, saving money and space.
…the heart of your aircraft®
Stack Doors have been specified worldwide for aircraft hangars, tee hangars, industrial and agricultural buildings….and even floating barges! Anyone can open this door with ease. Simply turn the handles located on every other panel, push gently, and the Stack Door glides on its bottom track to stack neatly out of the way. The stacking design allows for complete or partial opening.
We have 8 full-time employees with a combined 165 years of experience here at
Horton, Inc.

HIGH PERFORMANCE STARTS WITH THE RIGHT PARTS
Get the best engine for your airplane: Everyone says that they’re the best, but few can prove it. At RAM, we build to a higher standard than the OEM. We use the best parts: We use a higher content of new parts in our engines than any other overhaul shop. We hold our parts to a standard beyond the overhaul manual, rejecting parts other shops use. All of our engines are built with new cylinders. From premium parts, to precision balancing and then stringent inspection, our engines are built to a higher standard.
APS has designed a high quality brake disc that has established itself as the benchmark among aircraft brake discs. A true blend of strength and durability. CNC machined from a rigid one piece design these brakes are built to provide unparalleled performance. Heat treated to give it the appearance, with our name proudly engraved on the side; APS offers the ultimate in braking performance.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
