Unlocking the Potential of BizAv

y all accounts 2020 was a monumental year (it’s great to write that in the past tense). The year included a global pandemic, a contentious election, a recession, social unrest, and more. Regrettably, however, these issues do not follow a calendar schedule and will not magically subside in 2021. There is, however, at least light at the end of the tunnel for some. Like many cataclysmic events, there is the potential that 2020 helped speed along slowermoving shifts and even reversed decades-long trends. Take, for example, the acceleration of remote working, and even a reversal of migration to dense urban centers, as possible outcomes of 2020. Closer to home, key indicators suggest that private aviation has received an injection of newfound awareness and utilization from a much larger percentage of the population. Time will tell whether this boon grows further or subsides, but the scene is set for growth.

The year 2020 saw an inflow of ‘new entrants’ into private aviation. Demand for safer alternative air travel solutions found an outlet in private aviation. As expected, most of these new entrants are turning to fractional and charter options, and charter operators report that up to 50% of their passengers are first-time fliers. Rough math indicates this uptick represents just a small slice of the potential private jet flyers. A McKinsey & Co. study released earlier in 2020 stated that only 10% of people with the net worth required to fly privately are doing so. Additionally, fractional and charter operators are continually releasing new products with lower price points into the market that make private aviation accessible to an exponentially larger set of potential flyers. Played correctly, private aviation has the potential for step change growth in the near-term future.

Looking further ahead, exciting advancements in electric aircraft have potential to bring even more travelers into private aviation. Ten to 20 seat electric aircraft could satisfy latent demand for 200mile road trips. While the US does not have the rail infrastructure seen in other parts of the world, it does have a vast network of airports. Using the airline metric of Cost per Available Seat Mile (CASM), efficient aircraft have the potential to unlock a new option for travel. And, looking further into the future, electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft could potentially open access into even more locations where airports do not exist. The next 5-10 years may see a much larger percentage of the population looking upward when they think about mobility.

Unlocking the Potential

There is a thread that runs through this article – potential. The conditions are set for growth, but real work is required to unlock that potential. The Signature team has been diligently at work behind the scenes, even through 2020, with this future vision in mind. Much we are doing on our own (e.g., investments in new locations like Geneva and Sion to grow the network beyond our current 200+ scale, and investments in talent development for our people). But much is also being done collaboratively with partners who share our vision. Some are in the public domain, while others have yet to be announced. And there is the key: Achieving a future where a much larger set of the population enjoys frictionless access to the third dimension will require strong partners, courage, and a new mindset. So, while 2020 was about sheltering in place, let 2021 be a year to collaboratively forge a brave new future for private aviation. More information from www.signatureflight.com

Tecnam Repurposes P2012 for Vaccine Deliveries Worldwide In addition to the refrigeration problem, distributing COVID vaccines can be costly and nearly impossible in remote areas – a logistics challenge that could lead to a disproportionate delivery of a life-saving prophylactic. Tecnam Aircraft has developed the solution for equitable COVID vaccine distribution. Capua, Italy-based aircraft manufacturer Tecnam has partnered with ultra-freezer manufacturer Desmon to repurpose the company’s P2012 airplane for COVID vaccine transportation. The aircraft platform, named the “P2012 TRAVELCARE”, was developed to help distributors worldwide “reach even the most remote and hardly accessible communities, including the areas with underdeveloped transport infrastructure, to ensure timely and equitable delivery of help,” said Tecnam. Equipped with Desmon’s ultra-freezer designed to attain, maintain and track product temperature, Tecnam’s P2012 TRAVELCARE can transport as many as 115,000 vaccines to areas with less than 1,850ft of paved or unpaved runway.

“The value of the P2012 platform will extend beyond this mission. Today, it will facilitate the vaccine transportation, tomorrow it will continue to serve communities thanks to its versatility and easy (re)configuration.”

The P2012 TRAVELCARE platform is designed to maintain product temperature at up to: -86°C during transport; and 65°C for 10-12h after the system is unplugged for further distribution.

“In addition to its unparalleled reach and refrigeration capability, the P2012 TRAVELCARE aircraft system can reduce the distribution cost to as little as USD 0.005 per dose,” said Tecnam, “several orders of magnitude less when compared to the current means of transportation.” Tecnam Managing Director, Giovanni Pascale Langer, commented: “As the first vaccine breakthroughs were announced, we realized that the communities in remote areas would face delays in receiving help. 67 percent of European airports alone have runways shorter than 5,000ft, making them inaccessible to large aircraft. “We decided to act fast. The P2012 TRAVELCARE was designed to facilitate equitable and efficient vaccine distribution. It is our contribution to the fight for a COVIDfree world. With the dedicated support of our partners at Desmon, we worked tirelessly to repurpose the P2012 aircraft and meet all the necessary regulations for this special mission within less than a month.

FLIGHT TRAINING The Classroom of Aerial Work Aviation By Patrick Ryan

What sector of aviation has the sole responsibility to ensure the men and women who fly

every type of aircraft are safe and qualified? Patrick Ryan answers this question and highlights the many aspects of Flight Training that make it the aerospace industry's backbone.

So, you want to become a Pilot, Airborne Sensor Operator, Flight Attendant, helicopter Hoist Operator, or one of many other hobbyist and professionals that slip the surly bonds of Earth? Well, to make this happen, the Flight Training sector of Aerial Work aviation is your only path to earning your wings. Even though the Flight Training sector is just one part of a much larger aerospace training industry that teaches everything related to aviation, Flight Training is the primary sector that prepares civil aircrew personnel to operate both manned and unmanned aircraft for General Aviation, Commercial Transportation, and even Aerial Work aviation. So, what is Aerial Work aviation Flight Training?

What is Flight Training? At the ground level, Flight Training is the organised effort of instructing skills and knowledge or abilities that relate to specific useful aircrew competencies. Flight Training has specific goals of shaping an individual's aircrew capabilities, aptitudes, productivity, and performance. It influences the foundation of critical knowledge needed to fly safely, and it also guides the type of content presented at academic institutes and training centres. Additionally, Flight Training supports maintaining currency, difference training, and skill upgrades throughout an aircrew member’s personal or professional pursuit in addition to the basic or

initial aircrew training required for specific aircrew positions. Bottom line, Flight Training – from initial schooling through advanced ratings and onwards to recurrent training – is part and parcel of the aircrew world.

The Flight Training Sector From a general public perspective, most people think Flight Training is a student pilot and a Flight Instructor sitting in a small training aircraft practicing steep turns, touch & go’s, and many other “eye-hand” piloting skills. However, the Aerial Work Flight Training sector is more than that. The Flight Training sector ranges from

independent instructors to academic institutions providing both primary and ancillary training equally to non-pilot and pilot aircrew members alike. Depending on what aircrew position an individual is training for, the core instructional areas the Flight Training sector provides at different levels of intensity or depth are: • Theory of Flight and Aeronautics • Meteorology • Aircraft Systems & Capabilities (Manned & Unmanned aircraft) • Aerial Navigation • Communication Operations (Radio & Aviation English) • Flight & Airfield Operations and Procedures • Aeronautical Regulations, Laws, and Procedures • Crew Resource Management and Human Factors • Mission Planning & Mission Management • Emergency Procedures Again, based on the crew position, the Flight Training sector has specialised programmes that focus on specific aircrew duties or jobs built on the fundamentals of Flight Training. Here are just a few of the specialised training and certification programmes the Flight Training sector provides: • Pilot – Instrument Rating • Pilot – Commercial Rating • Pilot – Airline Transport Pilot Certification • Cabin Crew – Flight Attendant Certificate of Demonstrated Proficiency • Operator – Unmanned Aircraft System Commercial Certification • Aircrew – Airborne Sensor Operator (ASO) Training • Operator and Aircrew -–Unmanned Aircraft System – Aerial Surveying & Mapping Training • Aircrew – Helicopter Hoist Operator Training • Pilot and Aircrew – Police Aviation Fixed-Wing & Rotary Wing Aircraft Tactics and Sensor Training • And many more….

Aspects of Training Like with any training institution or training industry providing education regarding a specific trade, the methods and platforms of instruction in the Flight Training sector are similar but, in many ways, different.

Training Methods

The Flight Training sector is similar in applying all the many different types of training methods as other training industry sectors, e.g., lectures, demonstrations, rote learning, and more. However, the Flight Training sector is different to many industry training sectors because it focuses on active learning in actual high-risk conditions or situations. For example, many student aircrew members participate in emergency landing exercises, aircrew emergency water landing egress (dunk tank) simulation training, helicopter auto-rotation practice, and various other challenging learning events. When it comes to the rhythm of training, the standard training flow applied in the Flight Training sector is theoretical studying and practical learning with an endstate of passing a knowledge test and practical exam, plus having the "Right Stuff" to operate in the aviation world. The training flow is either theoretical learning, followed by practical training, or a parallel programme that matches learning topics with practical flight or simulation training events at the same time.

Training Platforms

When it comes to the primary instructional platforms or tools that the Flight Training sector utilises, the focus is on ground school (formal academic learning), procedural training devices, and practical hands-on learning.

Ground School

As mentioned before, Ground School is that part of Flight Training where a student acquires the theoretical knowledge required for their specific aircrew position or duties. 16 AERIAL WORK EUROPE FEBRUARY 2021

PHOTO COURTESY OF ALSIM FLIGHT TRAINING SOLUTIONS

Today, like many other industry training sectors, the Flight Training sector leverages both traditional and leading-edge training delivery methodologies, i.e., fixed learning to adaptive learning. In essence, one can find general and specialised knowledge learning via human-to-human instruction, computer-based e-learning, or internet e-learning platforms.

Procedural Training Devices and Systems

Because actual flight training can be both costly and hazardous, procedural training devices and systems are heavily used to provide a good training platform for both procedural and operational routine learning tasks. Besides saving money and reducing risk, procedural training devices and systems allow for repetition in building knowledge and eye-hand memory, exposing students to critical hazardous scenarios without the risk, and training when the weather is out-of-limits or an aircraft is not available. When it comes to training devices and systems, they can generally break down to either replicated platforms or advanced Simulators.

Training Devices

Training Devices are replicas of a real aircraft down to a one-dimensional view of a piece of equipment an aircrew member must learn to operate. They can range from cardboard & glue gadgets to full-scale hands-on interactive structures. Some of the traditional primary devices used in the Flight Training sector are: • A model airplane mounted on a stick (My favorite!) • Posters of instruments & systems • Static equipment & cockpit trainers (i.e., Aviation Training Device - ATD) • Full-Scale airline passenger cabin mockups

Simulators

Stepping up to the next level of learning, Flight Training simulators are the ideal tool to start flight training as they provide a high level of actual aircraft input/output responses. The types of simulators used in this sector of training are: • Computer-based Simulators • Virtual & Augmented Reality (VR/AR) devices • Full motion cockpit simulators (i.e., Advanced Aviation Training Device - AATD) According to Mr. Monnin, CEO of ALSIM Simulators, the French manufacturer of FAA and EASA certified flight simulators for pilot training. "Simulators are as essential as the aircraft itself for truly comprehensive and safe pilot training. It's quite simply the best learning environment. Students can also learn to fly with convertible simulators, as the Alsim AL250 or ALX, which combine different aircraft classes into one device to fit the competency-based training."

The idea on which ALSIM's philosophy bases their efforts is to give pilots a better grounding in aviation fundamentals more generally. Versatile simulators are designed to encourage the transference of skills and make the students better understand the logic and procedures common to each aircraft class. Additionally, this type of device is beneficial for multicrew integration and jet orientation training. Students need to develop skills and understanding of how to operate in a multi-crew environment. Simulator training is generic to conducting multi-crew operations and is not specific to a type of aircraft, i.e., a better situation to learn and re-enforce basic aircrew resource management fundamentals.

Training Aircraft

Without saying, the best training method in the aviation world is hands-on learning. Because flying is "Not" a static environment, the final step of bringing academic training and simulation together is during flight operations. At the beginning of manned flight, the Flight Training sector focused on specialised aircraft known as “Training Aircraft”. Training Aircraft are designed with simplified cockpits or workstations, tandem controls, and forgiving flight or operating characteristics. Even in the unmanned aircraft domain, there are preferred platforms that are more “forgiving” when it comes to training vs. routine operations. To break it down even further, Training Aircraft can be categorised as basic, advanced, and specialised trainers. Basic training aircraft are basic when it comes to complexity and configuration. They are designed not to overwhelm students and provide a stable environment. On the other hand, advanced training aircraft are still configured with the mindset of not overloading the student but introducing students to complex aircraft characteristics and capabilities, e.g., multi-engine, centerline turboprop, jet, etc. Specialised training aircraft are aircraft designed or modified to train aircrew in specialised commercial transportation and Aerial Work multi-mission operations on the fringe. Specialised training aircraft support the instruction of Aerial Mapping, Crop Dusting, Aerial Surveillance, and more. Some of the most popular Trainer Aircraft used today, both manned and unmanned – from basic to specialised aircraft – are: • Cirrus, SR20 single-engine piston aircraft • Hughes/Schweizer, S-300/S300C helicopter • DJI, Phantom 4 drone • Cessna, C-172 single-engine piston aircraft

• Diamond, DA42 TwinStar twin-engine piston aircraft • BRM Bristell • Beechcraft, King Air Series twin-turboprop • BAE Systems, T1 Hawk jet trainer • And many more…

The Future of Flight Training Like many Aerial Work industry sectors, the future is incredibly positive. Even with Covid-19 and the shortterm downturn in the commercial airline sector, Flight Training across the General Aviation, Commercial Transport/Cargo, and Aerial Work sectors is too critical for an established global aerospace industry to ignore. The Flight Training sector will continue to have the sole responsibility to ensure both future and current aircrew members are always operating most safely and professionally, no matter if it’s a Recreational Pilot, Aerial Firefighting Drone Operator, or a Flight Attendant. Like with so many industries, digital technology will continue to innovate and lead above traditional platforms into all aspects of Flight Training, e.g., Ground School, procedural training devices, and even in the cockpit. You can anticipate more: • Remote or cloud-based adaptive learning platforms implemented at the Ground School level; • Increased use of Virtual Reality (VR) devices for rote learning; and • Heavy use of Augmented Reality (AR) systems in the cockpit or drone ground-control units to enhance learning and expose students to emerging flight systems. Outside of technology, you will see the Flight Training sector infuse more service, quality control, and humanfactors skills into everyday training events, vs. just instructing technical and procedural knowledge and abilities.

Because the aviation and aerospace industries are competing with other industries for customers, employees, and resources, it's become apparent that both the aviation industry and the Flight Training sector must go beyond just teaching how to operate an aircraft safely. The Flight Training sector will be critical in supporting the aerospace industry to improve by expanding the learning experience and effectiveness for all stakeholders. Naturally, this starts with Flight Training and influencing the next generation of aircrew members!

Summary As you can see, the Aerial Work Flight Training sector is more than just a student pilot and flying with a flight instructor. The Flight Training sector is a global industry

that trains all aircrew members from a pilot, drone operator, airborne sensor operator, helicopter host operator to flight attendants to operate safely and effectively in the sky. Today, the Aerial Work Flight Training sector utilises not only traditional academic and business training methods, but applies a high level of high-tech, real-world, adaptive hands-on exposure to ensure students and active aircrew members are qualified to fly. As the backbone of the aviation and aerospace industries, the Aerial Work Flight Training sector will change and grow with the times. However, and without doubt, its primary mission of training men and women to fly safely and effectively will never change. I

100th PC-24 Delivered!

Since 2018, the Pilatus Super Versatile Jet Has “Really Taken Off” Less than three years after the first delivery, the 100th PC-24 has just been handed over to its new owner, Jetfly. The PC-24 is now present on every continent, flying numerous missions every day: providing medevac flights in Australia and the USA, for example, business travel for a German automobile manufacturer, and transport for government officials in South Africa and Switzerland.

It also boasts a large cargo door with a system for securing luggage – a unique feature in this aircraft category, and one that is “much appreciated by the pilots tasked with stowing passenger baggage,” says Pilatus. The manufacturer says that from now on, the PC-24 is also available with a modular inflight catering facility. The forward galley is located in the front section of the cabin and offers additional stowage room for coffee, ice, beverages and catering items.

The 100th Super Versatile Jet “made by Pilatus in Switzerland” is now in use as a business aircraft with its new owner, Jetfly Aviation. This handover marks another milestone in the still young history of the first Swiss business jet: the global fleet has clocked up over 33,500 safe hours in the air so far, of which over 2,375 hours have been accumulated by the fleet leader.

“The Super Versatile Jet also scores extra points for its modern, fuel-efficient Williams engines and smart Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACE),” the OEM says.

Spacious Cabin

Short Runways…

With 195 cubic feet (14.2 cubic metres) of cabin volume with flat floor throughout, the PC-24’s generous interior comfortably offers sufficient space for up to ten passengers.

The PC-24 provides access to almost twice as many aerodromes around the world as other jets currently on the market. It takes passengers closer to their actual destination because the PC-24 is designed for use at small airports with shorter runways – a great way to avoid the usual administrative complexities at larger airports and keep transfers on the ground to an absolute minimum.

Pilatus says the PC-24 has earned its place in the ‘mid-size jets’ category: “Customers who opt for a PC-24 actually end up with the same cabin size as in a model of the next higher price category.” The PC-24 offers passengers individually adjustable seats, a washroom with toilet, and a baggage area which remains accessible in flight and a wardrobe.

By way of example, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia flies missions on remote strips in the Australian Outback, daily proof that the PC-24 is perfectly suited for these assignments.

Whether on grass, gravel, snow or asphalt – the PC24 can land (almost) anywhere!

100th PC-24: Jetfly Jetfly has operated Pilatus aircraft for over 20 years. With the handover of this 100th PC 24, Jetfly now runs a Pilatus fleet of 51 aircraft – the largest in Europe. Cédric Lescop, CEO of Jetfly Aviation, said on the occasion of the ceremony: “We are excited and proud to take delivery of the 100th PC-24 manufactured at the factory in Stans. The Jetfly group already operates nine Pilatus PC-24’s on behalf of more than 50 European owners and co-owners. “All our customers without exception have been impressed by the quality of the PC-24 and the incredible performance of this aircraft. After two years of operation, our customers are still enthusiastic about their acquisition, which is a sign to us of the success of this new aircraft programme, which is well on the way to becoming another market bestseller, just like the PC-12 [single-engine turboprop].” Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of Pilatus, commented: “We hit the bullseye with the PC-24… I’m very encouraged by such high demand. We’re already sold out for 2021, but the orderbook is open for deliveries from 2022 onward.” He continued: “Investment in the PC-24 helps us to secure jobs at our Swiss site on a long-term basis. We are also working on further optimisations. In short, we will spare no effort to ensure that the PC-24 stays the undisputed leader in its class – exactly as the PC12 is now.” Pilatus says it is currently taking orders for deliveries from “around early 2022.”

MT PC12.qxp_Layout 1 15/01/2021 11:46 Page 1

MT47 “SILENT 7” PROP UPGRADE for PC-12 CERTIFIED PC-12 upgrade specialist Super Legacy XP Limited has become the first Pilatus PC-12 operator worldwide to install and obtain full certification for the MT47 Seven Blade propeller on the company’s PC-12 Super Legacy demonstration aircraft. This process culminated in flight performance tests conducted in Germany and high-altitude takeoffs at Europe’s uppermost airports, Samedan in Switzerland and Courchevel Altiport, where the runway resembles a ski jump. The latest propeller from MT combined with the Super Legacy Speed Cowling demonstrated significant performance improvements in takeoff roll, accelerate-stop distance, rate of climb and cruise speed. Meanwhile a complete change of harmonics also brings additional cabin comfort to the Super Legacy. The heart of the Super Legacy concept is a Finnoff upgrade that replaces the standard PT6A-67B engine with a new 67P powerplant, warrantied for 7 years by Pratt & Whitney. Adding a further 200hp to a lighter weight airframe, the Super Legacy outperforms the PC-12NG in several key parameters. London-based Super Legacy XP Limited is the European, Middle East and Africa distributor for the individual upgrade components, engine, propeller, speed cowl and Skandia cabin noise reduction system. With more than 50 upgrades performed, mainly in the US, Super Legacy XP is on track to upgrade and modify four PC-12 aircraft to Super Legacy standard for EMEA delivery during 2021/2. Super Legacy Director Stephen Williams said, “I’m delighted with the results of our project with MT and the installation of the 'Silent 7 Propeller'. When

coupled with a price tag for a finished aircraft almost $2 million lower than the latest factory PC-12, and a much shorter waiting list, the Super Legacy offers a sensible choice for aircraft buyers seeking both performance and value. Our upgrade components also offer compelling options for existing PC-12 owners of all variants, including the NG, who want improved performance from their personal or corporate aircraft.” Martin Albrecht, Vice President at MT Propeller Company and champion aerobatic test pilot, commented: “It became clear when our static thrust tests went off the scale of our meter that the additional blades of the Silent 7 were going to make a significant uplift in performance. This was proven in flight and the reduction in tip speed and vibration now confirms a significant improvement in noise and comfort – hence our label 'the SILENT 7'.” In summary, the Pilatus PC-12 Super Legacy XP aircraft provides a value-driven alternative to the purchase of a factory-new aircraft: extra performance, comfort and safety but also lower capital cost and lower absolute depreciation than a new aircraft.

As distributors for Finnoff Aviation Products, MT Propeller Company, American Aviation Speed Cowl, Skandia Sound Systems, and Garmin Avionics, Super Legacy works with these partners to assemble and deliver customised PC-12 aircraft. The company also supplies the upgrade components to existing Pilatus PC-12 owners wishing to upgrade their aircraft. The new EASA certified Flight Manual Supplements of the upgraded Super Legacy XP enable added power, capability, and luxury to the PC-12-45/47 Legacy series aircraft as a turn-key solution. These enhancements to powerplant, propeller, cabin soundproofing and interior detail combine to provide superior levels of performance. Coupled with familiar (Garmin) avionics and a sevenyear Pratt & Whitney extended powerplant warranty, the Super Legacy XP provides outstanding value to both private owners and commercial charter operators. Super Legacy XP Ltd says it is facilitating a five-year line-up of aircraft deliveries in Europe, Africa and Middle East. What’s the Latest on the Citation Light Jet Markets? Are you looking to buy or sell a Cessna Citation Entry-Level or Light Jet on the pre-owned business jet market? Matt Harris asks Jonathan Deutsch and Tony Kioussis for their insights on how these markets are performing… Since Cessna started delivering its Citation 500 in 1971, the Cessna Citation name has become a staple of Business Aviation – particularly within the lighter end of the market. By the end of its first decade in jet production, the company had developed the Citation I and Citation II models – heralding the heavy product development and expansion that would follow over the decades. In the present day, production continues at an impressive pace with popular models being built in the Light Jet, Mid-Size and Super MidSize Jet markets. What’s more, over the years nearly 8,000 Citations have been built, and, according to JETNET, just over 7,300 of those remain in operation. Understandably the pre-owned markets for Cessna Citation jets are also vibrant, and, for Light Jets within the Cessna Citation range, specifically, “The market is very active and stable,” according to Jonathan Deutsch, who oversees the Vienna office of Mesotis Jets. For example, “although we encountered logistical problems during the first lockdown in March through to May 2020, we were still able to sell seven Cessna Citation products ranging from the CJ1 to the CJ4, as well as one Citation XLS+ within Europe,” he adds.

Reasons for Citation Light Jet Market Popularity According to Deutsch, a part of the reason for the popularity of Cessna’s Light Jet products could be down to the fact that transcontinental sales were difficult because of travel restrictions during the lockdowns in 2020 and into the New Year. Meanwhile, Kioussis highlights a better-than-average Maintenance Exposure to Ask Price ratio in the Cessna Citation Light Jet fleet as a further reason for the marketability of these jets. “The Maintenance Exposure to Ask Price Ratio (ETP Ratio) for the tracked fleet was 88.5%, compared to 76.6% for the entry-level Citation fleet,” he notes. Moreover, since the very start of jet manufacture at Cessna, the Citation name has been synonymous with steady, reliable, and predictable flying characteristics – especially in the Entry-Level and Light Jet products, making them ideal platforms for those seeking to enter business jet ownership. “Entry-Level and Light Jets are often owner-flown,” Kioussis shares. “Between turboprop owners moving up to a Light Jet (rather than resorting to airlines for longer haul flights), and first time buyers entering the market, the Light Jet category has been the beneficiary of increased sales activity.”

Tony Kioussis, President, Asset Insight agrees. His company tracks 29 Light Jet models, 16 of which are Entry-Level and Light Citation types. “The market for Light Jets was quite active during Q4, with 166 aircraft trading,” he notes. “Of those, 128 were Entry-Level or Light Citation Models. That equates to 77% of all tracked model trades.”

“We have learned from the past that every crisis [in the market] brings a shift in wealth, often creating winners and losers within the business jet owner communities,” Deutsch adds. “These, ultimately, enhance buying and selling activities amongst certain aircraft models.

And, as of Q4 2020 the lighter jets in the Citation range were on the market fewer days than other Light Jets, notes Kioussis, averaging 369 days before a sale, compared to the market average of 399 days.

“Covid-19 has created a new group of clients. These have surfaced on the market compelled by safety reasons, and are lured by the guarantee of independent mobility.”

Stand-Out Citation Light Jet Models With Duncan Aviation’s David Coleman highlighting the premiums some older Citation models, such as the Citation V, were commanded in mid2020. Clearly the lighter end of the Citation market is ideal for the type of buyer Deutsch and Kioussis outline. “Here in Europe the Citation CJ2+, CJ3 and CJ3+ has really been touching the sweet spot for buyers,” Deutsch shares. “These jets have great avionics combined with the right range and number of passenger seats, while remaining affordable.” Kioussis agrees. Sharing JETNET data he reveals there had been 23 CJ3 sales and 12 CJ2 sales during the past 90 days (at the time of writing). But it’s the CJ3+ that really catches his attention: “With only 2.9% of the active fleet listed for sale, an ETP Ratio of 9.4%, seven transactions during the past 90 days, and averaging 150 Days on Market, the Citation CJ3+ is the aircraft that stands out as we enter 2021,” he highlights. “None of the transactions we have seen went above retail values,” Deutsch reports. “They commanded wholesale to mid-point values.” However, Deutsch adds that it absolutely makes sense that some older Citation Light Jets – having reached their “depreciation bottom” – could have experienced a small increase in pricing due to the higher demand in the segment overall.”

Tips for Entry Level & Light Citation Jet Buyers and Sellers So how do the current Cessna Citation pre-owned market conditions play out for the buyers and sellers? Deutsch believes both will find value. This is because the markets are “relatively stable with good absorption rates among the Citation fleet,” he explains. He also warns that both

buyer and seller may face logistical issues, owing to the impact of Covid-19 restrictions (depending on where the aircraft and the buyer are based). “The lockdown situation of each country is highly volatile, and can change over a single day – so the best advice is to stay flexible, and be patient,” he concludes. Addressing buyers specifically, Kioussis notes a common error for “both first-time buyers and turboprop operators moving up to a jet to incorrectly interpret a low price as good value. “While aircraft offering good value do exist, an aircraft’s acquisition cost is often the smallest portion of its overall operating expense,” he elaborates. “Using industry average operating costs versus conducting a detailed, inexpensive analysis covering the time-period the buyer intends to hold the aircraft is the only way to know if an aircraft actually represents good value for money.” Sellers, meanwhile, often do not understand where their aircraft is positioned relative to other listings, Kioussis warns. “Sellers often misinterpret a logical offer as one that is too low for their asset, thereby incurring additional costs while their aircraft continues to sit on the market awaiting another buyer.” Kioussis advises sellers to collect plenty of detailed information on comparative jets on the market, as this data will enable them to position their aircraft well, and ‘justify’ their asking price. Ultimately, Kioussis concludes, the successful buyer or seller is usually the entity “that knows how an aircraft stacks up against comparable jets, correctly valuing the asset based on its maintenance condition.”

ADAMS AVIATION HAS MOVED!

Adams Aviation’s home over the past decade has been in New Addington, near London Biggin Hill Airport, but the company would like all its valued customers to know that it has now moved to new premises close to Gatwick Airport:

Adams Aviation Ltd Incora, Aeropia House, 2 Kelvin Lane, Newton Rd Crawley RH10 9TY United Kingdom Adams Aviation has invested in a new Virtual Private Network and Microsoft Teams videoconferencing “meaning that we now have the flexibility to operate, communicate and serve your needs from anywhere that we can get an internet connection. Despite the challenges that Covid-19 presents, rest assured we are well positioned to meet and exceed your needs remotely.” The company also reflected on Brexit and its plan to maintain its warehouse in the UK but service its European customers’ needs via a subsidiary in the EU. When customers are based in the EU then goods will be sent using the UPS WorldEase service. “Your order will go direct to you so that there is no delay. Your price will be the one quoted with no additional charges for duty, Customs clearance, etc. Our German subsidiary will clear Customs and handle any paperwork in the EU. Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote

According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

How to Avoid Early Aircraft Maintenance Regardless of the systems and type of aircraft you operate, the way the flight crew

operates can help a lot in avoiding early maintenance and the associated costs. Dave Higdon explains in this article from GA Buyer Europe sister publication, AvBuyer.

As much as the modern aircraft’s state-of-the-art powerplants and systems have evolved to simplify the workload of those operating them, one thing remains the same: The capability of the operator to damage them with careless or improper use. Flight crews continue to play a key role in helping ensure their aircraft enjoys a long life, free of unnecessary and troublesome maintenance events. But what are some of those potentially ‘troublesome’ events, and how can operators avoid encountering them, inadvertently? Sometimes it comes down to simple aircraft operation management; while other times it’s more technical in nature. Almost always the proper care and attention can help you avoid unnecessary inconvenience and cost, preventing the company’s aircraft from needing an early trip to the MRO shop.

Small Things Matter Several years ago a passenger asked me why we had approached the destination runway in a series of manoeuvres that resulted in slower airspeeds. We were both eager to end the five-hour flight so we could each attend meetings scheduled for that afternoon. I explained how slowing the aircraft for touchdown contributed to a shorter landing and an easier rollout, essentially resulting in reduced wear on the aircraft’s brakes and tyres, and contributing to a lower maintenance bill when the annual inspection came due. “You're also fortunate that you don't have to put your airplane into a rental agreement,” my airframe and powerplant mechanic once pointed out, highlighting how, with different pilots flying, the airplane may be exposed to the handling of those with no ownership stake. Such aircraft tend to require more expensive maintenance (not to mention the change to 100-hour inspection cycles instead of annual inspections).” That A&P helped me understand how even little changes in my flying habits could help lower the costs of maintenance and periodic inspections. Operating the aircraft with a mindset to keep maintenance at a minimum offers benefits to any operation, whether a small company flying a small Piston Single or a Large Jet flown for that large conglomerate.

Engine Care: Not too Hard, Not too Soft As noted earlier in this story, closely watching temperatures and pressures upon engine start-up can help preclude exceedances that may mandate a hot-section inspection – if not a hot-section overhaul. Both are expensive, time-consuming jobs. When in-flight, observing temperature, pressure and fuel-flow levels can help keep the powerplants running happily until they reach the time or cycle triggers for inspection and overhaul.

46 PRODUCTS AND SERVICES BUYER EUROPE FEBRUARY 2021

But that doesn't mean ‘babying’ the engines. Mechanics and powerplant engineers encourage pilots to run their engines as hard as conditions allow; not wide-open all of the time, but high in the power range to help keep the engine healthy. ‘Babying’ engines, they warn, can allow soot and carbon to build up in the power sections, which wastes fuel and contributes to even more build up. The best solution to an engine that is dirty on the inside is to run through an engine-wash system to flush out and remove the efficiency-robbing contaminants.

Manage Pressurisation Another potentially costly operating issue stems from the aircraft’s pressurization system, which is a manually-controlled system on many older jets and turboprops. (The modern ‘set-and-forget’ pressurisation controls are a relatively recent development, especially on turboprops.) Mismanaging pressurisation could incur a variety of maintenance needs, from damaging the outflow valve that modulates the cabin pressure, to causing seals to fail due to excessive pressure (potentially injuring the ears of passengers). You could even blow the outflow valve, resulting in rapid decompression – an event with a potentially fatal outcome. And failure to reduce cabin pressure to ground level after landing can result in damage to the door-lock mechanisms and could lead to the cabin door opening violently enough to damage the airframe and injure anyone standing directly outside. The result? More unnecessary maintenance and repair, at the very least.

It's (mostly) a Question of Control Most of the poor operating practices that damage an aircraft, powerplant, or components, are under the control of the flight crew, regardless of how state-of-the-art the systems are. That puts the onus on the flight crew to adhere to best operating practices, whether on a fully-crewed Large Jet, or an aircraft operated by a single pilot. Most potentially damaging completely avoided.

events

can

be

Getting the most out of the aircraft, for the least level of wear and tear, and on the minimal fuel possible, comes down to learning those practices and making them standard operating procedure. The result will be a happier aircraft that spends the least possible amount of time in the maintenance hangar. And that equates to a happier flight department, reporting to a happier CFO… I
