Pooleys is a family owned and operated business, founded in the UK by Robert Pooley on leaving the Royal Air Force in 1957. For seven decades, Pooleys Flight Equipment has been a highly respected name in the Aviation Industry as a leading manufacturer of Flight Equipment and publisher of Aviation and Flight Training materials. During that time, we have expanded our product range and our geographical reach. Our products are sold through flight training organisation and our network of loyal dealers across EMEA and beyond. We continue to manufacture, at our factory in the UK, the worlds largest range of pilot’s kneeboards, flightboards and flight computers and we now stock over 2800 different products from many of the worlds most recognisable aviation brands. In the last 4 years, we have invested heavily in our systems, processes and infrastructure. Indeed, we have completely refurbished our offices, factory and warehouse. This included doubling our factory and warehouse area at our Cranfield site and purchasing new manufacturing equipment. In addition, now that the UK has left the EU, we have set up a new company, Pooleys Flight Equipment EU Ltd based in the Republic of Ireland, that continues to offer our European distributors and FTOs frictionless trade. We believe that excellent customer service lies at the heart of our business as well as a passion for aviation that underlines everything that we do. Since we opened our first pilot shop at Elstree Aerodrome in 1961, we have sought to provide the best face to face service in the industry, whether that be at one of our 4 Pilot Shops in the UK, our new Pilot Shop at Wilson Airport, Nairobi, Kenya or at one of the 17 exhibitions we normally attend across EMEA each year or indeed when we are out on the road visiting flying schools and dealers. Our success is not just down to our dedicated, knowledgeable and loyal team but also to our customers - pilots, schools, dealers and enthusiasts. Much of what you see in Pooleys today is due to the passion and commitment of many people from around the world within our aviation community. It is that community which Pooleys has always sought to try and support. We want to give a little something back and to open up aviation to those who in their normal lives would not have access to the world of flight or who do not have the means to make their dreams of becoming a pilot a reality. Each year, Pooleys donates product and some of the proceeds from our sales to aviation charities and community interest groups. Since we set up our promotional code scheme over a decade ago, we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities and have been delighted to see the incredible results they have achieved. If you are interested in finding out some more about the charities we support and the amazing work they do, please use the QR code at the bottom of this page. Perhaps you can find a way to support them too…

Established 2018 Five years ago, following the UK’s decision to leave the EU, we took the decision to set up a new company in the Republic of Ireland. The plan was to protect our customers in the EU and to mitigate any potential consequences to the flow of trade between the UK and EU. On 24th December 2020, the new EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement was agreed in principle and came into force on 1st January 2021. The result was customs checks, duties, tariffs and other additional costs that our EU customers would face every time they received an order from us directly from the UK. In March 2021, we successfully shipped our first order via our new hub in Ireland. We paid the import duties and tariffs as the consignment entered the EU and our end customer in Greece received the goods under intra-EU terms – no customs paperwork or checks and crucially no additional costs. Since then, 100s of orders to companies across the EU have been successfully shipped. If you are interested in using this trade service for your Pilot Shop, FTO or Airline, please contact us: Email: trade@pooleys.com Tel: 44 (0) 208 953 4870 We look forward to working with you!
. . . . and giving back to the aviation community To celebrate our 65th Anniversary, we are teaming up with a number of organisations and charities to support the work they do and to offer opportunities for individuals to get involved in the world of aviation.

Avionics — The Best is Yet to Come! The avionics industry has undergone major changes in recent decades, bringing instruments and devices to market that make flying safer and pilots’ jobs easier. But it is not standing still. It is an innovation driver that constantly brings technical progress into cockpits.
The world of avionics can be confusing, as it thrives on abbreviations and acronyms like no other area of aviation: GPS, COM, NAV and XPDR are familiar to most pilots, but when it comes to ADS-B, EGPWS, AHRS, CVR, FANS and ECU, the air already gets thinner. Nevertheless, avionics is an exciting area of aviation because nowhere else is there such a high pace of innovation with new devices and sensors that improve safety, make flying easier, increase efficiency and assist pilots in their tasks. Thanks to integrated avionics and large displays, the alltoo-familiar mechanical instruments and monochrome displays from ancient times are disappearing at an increasing pace from the cockpits of general aviation aircraft. Garmin and Avidyne triggered this digital revolution in cockpits at the turn of the millennium with their G1000 and Entegra avionics suites, respectively.
However, aircraft are very durable products compared to personal electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops, which means that avionics manufacturers cannot keep up with every technological leap in electronic components. Instead, they must introduce modernisation in blocks, as Garmin has done, for example, with the introduction of the latest generation of the G1000, the G1000 NXi. Obsolescence of existing equipment and the associated problem of missing spare parts is not a new issue in avionics. NASA’s Space Shuttles flew with avionics using Intel i486 chips, which became completely obsolete during the last 15 years of the Space Shuttle era. Redesigning them would have been too expensive, so NASA sought old computers from which to harvest the coveted chips as spare parts for their Space Shuttles.
Do I have to upgrade? Not all pilots and aircraft owners want to part with their cherished instrument panels. They prefer round instruments. That’s why Garmin surprised the general aviation community with the GI 275, a digital instrument designed to circumvent the ‘glass cockpit or round instruments?’ question. The GI 275 is designed for the 3.125-inch panel cutouts and can be swapped out for the instruments installed there. It is a 4-in-1 instrument, meaning it replaces up to four instruments — such as the Attitude Indicator (AI/artificial horizon), the Course Deviation Indicator (CDI), the Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) and the Engine Indication System (EIS).

In addition to the classic functionalities familiar from the individual circular instruments, the multi-instrument also offers additional display functions, such as weather,

terrain, synthetic vision and ‘SafeTaxi’ aerodrome charts. Thanks to the integrated WLAN interface, updates to the instrument’s databases can easily be made via Database Concierge.
Growing Connectivity Connectivity of aircraft — including general aviation aircraft — continues to grow as pilots and passengers want to be constantly online, including when in the air. The ‘Connected Aircraft’, on which all major manufacturers such as Honeywell, Collins Aerospace and Garmin are working, is a convenience for occupants, but it can above all make an aircraft’s operation more efficient, as data can be exchanged online with a maintenance centre or an operations centre. Safety also improves significantly when weather data is available in real time and shown on the display for pilots.
Get Me Home! Avionics progress makes aircraft more autonomous, too and enhances safety if a pilot is incapacitated. In October 2019 Garmin unveiled its Autoland system, a revolutionary feature for general aviation aircraft focused on improving safety. In an emergency, the system can fly an aircraft to the nearest suitable airfield without human intervention, where it can automatically land, taxi and shut down the engine. It takes into account factors such as wind, weather, terrain, obstacles, the amount of fuel remaining on board and the aircraft’s performance parameters. Factors for selecting a suitable airfield include the availability of a GPS approach procedure and runway length. To activate Autoland in an emergency, a human on board must press the appropriate Autoland button. However, the system can also activate itself if necessary.
Avidyne offers a full suite of panel-mounted avionics with synthetic vision, including its flagship IFD550 GPS/NAV/COM with integrated attitude sensor, and the IFD440 GPS/NAV/COM. Both feature built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, shown here running the IFD100 App on iPad. © Avidyne
Connectivity of an an aircraft also involves integrating flight planning and navigation software such as that offered by SkyDemon or ForeFlight. Pilots do their flight planning on their own tablets and send their flight plans online to air traffic control.
The GI 275 is an electronic multi-function touchscreen display that fits in a traditional round instrument cut-out in an instrument panel. © Garmin
The system was first certified by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in May 2020 aboard the Piper M600 single-engine turboprop aircraft, followed by the Daher TBM 940 turboprop single, and the Cirrus SF50 Vision single-engine personal jet.
In 2020, the Garmin Autoland system won the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy, awarded annually for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America with respect to improving the performance, efficiency, and safety of air or space vehicles, the value of which has been thoroughly demonstrated by actual use during the preceding year.
required for flights can be seen still even more easily sound like science fiction today, but they will become everyday reality for future generations of pilots. The best is yet to come!

The Way Ahead for Avidyne Cirrus Pilots Erik Gundersen explains why he’s excited about upgrading the Avidyne avionics in his Cirrus now this option is available. It is hard to believe that the first ‘all-glass’ Cirrus aircraft are approaching 20 years old. Thanks to the Avidyne Entegra PFD/MFD system and the Garmin 430/430Ws the Cirrus was revolutionary! The aircraft often had much more advanced avionics than business and commercial jets. Even the Bombardier CRJ700s at Atlantic Southeast Airlines, where I worked right after college, didn’t even have GPS!
pilot input via touch screen or with buttons and knobs, or a combination of both.
Introduced in 2002, the all-glass Avidyne package became standard equipment in 2004. That held true until mid-2008 when Cirrus switched to the Garmin G1000-based Perspective System, now Perspective+. This was a fully integrated system, much like Avidyne’s R9 system, which was an optional upgrade for existing Cirrus owners. This put nearly 4,000 Cirrus aircraft in need of an eventual upgrade in the fleet.
Synthetic vision adds greatly improved situational awareness to the cockpit. The familiarity with the existing Entegra displays is natural, as is the addition of touch. Just touch the VSI bug and drag – it’s that easy! Split screen functionality is provided on the new MFD. This provides the ability to show full and split screen displays of maps and flight plans, Jeppesen approach charts and airport diagrams and other data. Boot times are reduced substantially.
Despite Cirrus moving away from the Avidyne package, Avidyne continued to support the existing Cirrus fleet in several ways: • A complete avionics upgrade path to a new system, the Avidyne R9. • Certification of an advanced digital autopilot – the DFC90. • Certification of new and improved GPS/Nav/COMM slide-in replacements with their IFD navigator series. • Plus active traffic and ADS-B solutions. All the time supporting the existing hardware with support, repair, and warranty options. Despite these upgrades, Cirrus users were still left longing for something to upgrade their old PFD and MFDs.
Vantage Unveiled at Oshkosh ‘21 That time has come! Just before AirVenture at Oshkosh last July, Avidyne announced the Vantage Flight Display System. This new system is comprised of a pair of 12-inch screens, one dedicated PFD and one MFD. Both make use of Avidyne’ s hybrid interface, like the IFDs, allowing
I had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with the Avidyne team at AirVenture and used the system firsthand. I was very impressed! It is very intuitive, and the displays look fantastic; the 12inch screens are quite the upgrade. The colour and brightness are stunning.
One of the biggest improvements, however, is the dual ADHRS. The MFD provides full reversionary capability with dual attitude reference sensors that are tightly coupled with the DFC90 autopilot for fail-safe, redundant operation. Since Avidyne is starting with Cirrus certification, we will be the first to use the new system. As of this writing, Avidyne is hopeful that certification will be achieved in the second half of 2022. So how much will this cost? Avidyne lists them at $12,500 USD for each display, and they must be installed as a set, so $25,000 USD, plus installation. There are a few important things to note: • You are required to have dual IFD navigators and the DFC90 autopilot to use the system. • A new instrument panel will be required for each installation. • Vantage will be compatible with all Cirrus/Avidyne engine instrumentation configurations (SIU/DAU systems, and other factory equipment like Skywatch, XM Weather, etc.)
While I was initially disappointed that I could not use my existing Garmin navigators, after utilising the system in person and talking with the Avidyne engineering teams, it makes complete sense now on multiple fronts. The main ones are that certification will be quicker and the overall user experience is more consistent and uniform. For those of you with IFDs already, this upgrade will be much easier on the wallet. However, for those of us without them, there is still good resale of even the Garmin 430W navigators on the used market. Because of this, I am personally obtaining the Dual IDF440 upgrade this year, in anticipation of getting the Vantage upgrade sometime in 2022 or 2023. That way I can experience the benefit of the new navigators earlier. For those with the Garmin GTN navigators, you can also switch to dual IFD navigators, albeit it is not a slide-in replacement, and an increased installation cost would be incurred. I think it’s also important to note that Garmin also has its upgrade path that you may want to consider — the dual Garmin G500 TXi installation — but this upgrade requires much more rewiring, new engine monitoring equipment and sensors, etc. It will be significantly more expensive to go the Garmin route. Installation ease and cost is what makes this Avidyne Vantage upgrade attractive to many of us Cirrus G1, G2 and G3 owners. Utilising the existing engine monitoring equipment and existing wiring harnesses should keep the downtime minimal. The estimated installation time is around 40 hours. Avidyne will supply wiring diagrams, CAD files and other installation instructions to the shops and owners. Avidyne is currently taking deposits from Cirrus owners who have already upgraded to IFDs. If you have not upgraded to Avidyne IFDs you can get a reservation with the purchase of an IFD or DFC90.

Cirrus Aircraft and ALSIM Form Alliance to Provide ‘Next level’ Training At Cirrus Aircraft’s CX 2022 event in Knoxville, Tennessee, Cirrus and ALSIM Simulators revealed a new alliance to provide Cirrus customers with “a complete flight training solution.” Le Loroux-Bottereau, France based ALSIM displayed its ALSR20 simulator, an exact replica of a new Cirrus SR20 G6, at the conference. It was due to be installed at the Cirrus Training Center in Knoxville after the event. ALSIM launched the ALSR20 simulator in December 2020. The Flight Training Device (FTD) is Level 5 compliant with the latest aviation standards from EASA, the FAA, Transport Canada and the CAAC. The high-fidelity device contains the latest G6 specific interior cockpit and flight deck including a real Garmin GDU 1050A and GFC 700 Autopilot. The ALSR20 is further equipped with a Garmin GMA 350C all-digital audio panel and a Garmin GCU 479, and can simulate the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS). Adding SR22/SR22T Models ALSIM, over the coming months, will sell the Cirrus SR22 and SR22T simulators to help meet the training demand of Cirrus pilots and the Cirrus Training Centers.

(Left to right) Audrey Jeffroy, ALSIM Sales Director, David Moser, Cirrus Aircraft’s VP of Fleet & Special Mission Aircraft, Dr. Scott Firsing of ALSIM’s North America
At the same time, Cirrus is providing input into ALSIM’s new streamlined SR-series Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD), which is currently being developed at the ALSIM Headquarters in France. Like its larger simulator counterpart, it will contain elements such as real Garmin Perspective+, but will have a much smaller footprint, and be more affordable. Dr. Scott Firsing, of ALSIM’s North America office, explained: “We have built a strong relationship with the Cirrus Aircraft leadership over recent years. Both companies have always
been on the same page regarding the necessity for high-quality equipment that utilises the latest technology to train professional pilots.” David Moser, Cirrus Aircraft’s VP of Fleet and Special Mission Aircraft, added: “Our cooperative sales alliance with ALSIM will allow us to provide flight training devices, along with our SR-series aircraft, as part of an integrated flight training solution for our fleet customers.” ALSIM’s latest ALSR20 can be demonstrated with Cirrus in Knoxville. Additionally, both the SR series FTD Level 5 and the smaller ALSIM Cirrus SR AATD will be available to ‘fly’ at EAA Airventure Oshkosh 2022 in July. www.cirrusaircraft.com
ALSIM: Still Growing
ALSIM has been developing and manufacturing FAA and EASA certified flight simulators since 1994. Today the company has more than 400 certified flight devices installed with 350 clients worldwide in over 60 countries. The French company provides a wide range of solutions covering PPL, CPL & IR/ME training needs up to MCC-JOC, APS MCC and part of MPL phase 1 & 2. www.alsim.com

CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

Insure Your Fleet! Soon it will be two years since virus chaos hit the world but many of us have also been aware that behind the scenes there’s been a squeeze going on in the aviation insurance industry. Being a broker trying to get the best option for our customers, whether they are pilots or aircraft owners or businesses such as flying schools and maintenance organisations, E&G Aviation Insurance is acutely aware that the number of underwriters has dwindled and those remaining are looking for reasonable margins. For many years aviation as a whole was a loss-making area for them and even the regulators now say they can’t run loss-making ‘books’! That said, according to Chris Varley, Chairman of E&G Aviation Insurance, if you operate a fleet of GA aircraft, he may well be able to find a good package arrangement for your insurance – especially for those offering training and self-fly hire (but also for those chartering aircraft). “But please do give us plenty of time to get quotes,” said Varley. Finally, for fleet operators who also have various types of business insurance needs, please do think of E&G as a friendly broker that can help get you the best quote.

▲ 189 FOUND IN WOODS
There are very few aircraft that can be referred to as the only one left. But the picture aircraft herewith is exactly that. This Focke Wulf Fw 189; ‘v7✚1H’ is believed to be the only surviving example left in the world!
By Jamie Chalkley The Fw 189 “Uhu” (Owl), is a German twin-engine, twin-boom, three-seat tactical reconnaissance and army cooperation aircraft. The aircraft’s origin came from the drawing board of Focke-Wulf’s chief designer himself, Kurt Tank. The test aircraft first flew in 1938 and production aircraft entered service in 1940 (and were produced until mid 1944). A total of 846 were built and the aircraft was used as the main reconnaissance aircraft of the German Army on the Eastern Front. Due to its success as an observation aircraft, it was known by many as ‘The Flying Eye’. At Pontsalenjoki (on the fringe of the Russian Arctic Circle near the Finish border) on 4th May 1943, v7✚1H prepared for a photoreconnaissance mission to Loukhi. At 03.06 hrs the crew, Lothar Mothes (pilot), Kurt Lebrecht (senior officer/observer/mid-upper gunner), and Gunther Albrecht (rear gunner) took off on their last mission…never to return! Some 50 years later and from deep inside a Russian forest, the aircraft was recovered by warbird specialist Jim Pearce (my Grandfather!). The aircraft was returned to the UK whereupon research and some initial pre-restoration work began. That fateful final mission was investigated and the pilot, Lothar Mothes, was not only found, but contact was established and he travelled to the UK to be reunited with his aircraft. 22 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE FEBRUARY 2022
First Look at The Flying Eye The Fw 189s were assembled at one of three production facilities: the Focke-Wulf factory in Bremen, Germany; at Avions Marcel Bloch’s factory in Bordeaux-Merignac (which was in occupied France but after the war became Dassault Aviation); or at the Aero Vodochody aircraft factory in Prague, (occupied) Czechoslovakia. Total production was 864 aircraft. This aircraft was built in early 1941 by Aero in Prague where it was assembled as the fourth of only ten Fw 189s built there. The aircraft was assigned Werke Nr (S/N) 2100 and it was test flown, on the 23rd and 24th July 1941, by Aero test pilot Karel Vanek. It was released ‘airworthy’ and passed over to the short-range army cooperation unit. The Fw 189 was designed to carry a crew of three, although at times it carried up to five. With a maximum speed of 217mph it had an operating range of 416 miles. And it was a tough and rugged aircraft — on one occasion an Fw 189 returned after combat with one entire tail boom missing! This was caused either by flak or possibly even a ramming manoeuvre. This is testimony to the sturdiness of the design. For ease of replacement, both booms were interchangeable to minimise the number of spare parts needed.
The aircraft had, as part of its defensive armament design, an innovative rear gun station designed by the Ikaria Aeronautical Equipment Company. This included a rotating conical rear turret which was manually rotated within a metalframed glazed conical fairing. This provided the operator an open section for either a single or twin-mount machine gun. The unique design provided not just an effective weapons platform but was also a very well thought-through, streamlined shape, which complimented the aircraft’s manoeuvrability. Many pilots, including Mothes (the pilot of this one) commented on what good handling the aircraft had. In the role that it was designed for, principally reconnaissance, it was regarded as a superb aircraft. The Fw 189 managed to combine all the attributes needed on the Eastern Front — strength, manoeuvrability, toughness and reliability — with the capacity to operate from short, rough airstrips. The aircraft also carried underwing bomb racks, two on each wing. These were fitted so that the aircraft could carry four SC 50kg bombs. This aircraft was eventually stationed with 1 (H)/32 based at Pontsalenjoki, carrying the code letters ‘v7 ✚ 1H’. The ‘v7’ represented the squadron, the ‘1’ the unit, and the ‘H’ was the aircraft letter.

Last Mission At Pontsalenjoki, on 4th May 1943, v7✚1H departed for a photo-reconnaissance mission to Loukhi. The task: To photograph Loukhi III Airbase from an altitude of 20,000ft and then continue north up the Murmansk-Leningrad Railway. At 03.06 the crew departed. At exactly 03.37hrs, 31 minutes into the flight, a radio message was received at their base to say that after arriving over Loukhi they were under heavy attack by enemy fighters (Russian Hurricanes). This was the last radio message received from the aircraft. Both the gunners were wounded during the airto-air combat. The aircraft made a forced landing and struck the tops of trees before finally stopping, ‘elevated’, in the canopy of the forest, at which point it dropped down and backwards, dislodging the tail booms, before finally coming to rest upside down in the middle of a densely wooded area. Lebrecht and Albrecht died as a result of their wounds, whereas Mothes survived after the landing. Mothes hid behind Russian lines for two weeks, living off grubs he found behind bark on the trees. He was eventually spotted and rescued by German soldiers. He spent nine months in hospital and convalescing as a result of the crash. But Mothes made a full recovery and returned to his duties as a pilot, flying a further 100 missions in Fw 189s. Mothes survived the war and in later years worked as an architect in Germany. Following extensive research about the aircraft, he was located and invited to the UK during a large airshow in 1996 to be reunited with the aircraft some 53 years since he left it. His visit caused total silence among the surrounding crowd, and he looked rather emotional as he surveyed the condition of the aircraft, undoubtedly remembering his fallen crewmates. He took a moment to compose himself, walked up to the cockpit and, leaning in, he placed his hands on the throttles and commented “just where I left them!”
The Owl and The Bear! The FW 189 spent an extensive period of its untouched life in arctic conditions in the Murmansk region of Northern Russia. Jim Pearce, a warbird recovery specialist from the UK, inspected the aircraft ‘as found’ on the forest floor. Most moving components in the aircraft still moved. This included the navigator/bomber’s swivel seat which still slid backwards and forwards. Multiple other hatches could still be opened and operated with ease. Other than a local bear which took some
JIM PEARCE AND PILOT LOTHAS MOTHES SITTING IN PILOT SEAT
interest in Jim’s presence, causing some concern he told me, the location remained an eerily still and timeless place. The aircraft had a number of visible bullet holes, one of which had a clear line of fire from an acute angle from the starboard side fuselage skin near to the rear cone, and up over the pilot’s right shoulder. Another visible strike had come from the port quarter, which damaged at least one of the engines. The glazed canopy had also suffered heavy damage from aircraft combat firepower and the subsequent forced (crash) landing. A very capable Russian team was assembled and tasked with extracting v7✚1H by helicopter. Following a challenging movement, the aircraft was transported back to the UK in 1992 by air, road and sea. The aircraft and squadron codes of v7✚1H were still clearly visible following the recovery and inspection in the UK. Back in the UK and still evident on one of the wingtips were the main factory plates for the aircraft. This had been partly concealed by yellow theatre paint. It clearly states ‘Focke-Wulf Flugzeugbau GmbH, Bremen’; ‘Nachbau Aero’; ‘Prag-Praha’; Muster 189 and the full Werke Nr of 0112100. Although 0112100 is the full works number, all the other plates on the aircraft, and especially the painted number on each fin, simply refer to ‘2100’. The clearest marking on the aircraft was found on one of the fins, which displayed a Swastika. Other visible markings include a white stork which was displayed on both exterior sides of the cockpit. This was the emblem of the Unit the aircraft belonged to, 1(H)/32, a short-range army cooperation unit. The camouflage paint of the upper surfaces had been painted over in a whitewash for winter missions — this had been crudely brushed on by hand which is still clearly

visible on the original surfaces today. The Fw 189’s two Argus As 410A-1 12-cylinder inverted-vee air-cooled engines both had been broken at the firewall upon impact with the ground (after crashing into the forest canopy). Both engines were quite severely damaged, with one having taken a number of small-calibre hits to the engine casing. During the crash, both two-bladed wooden Argus propellers disintegrated. Following recovery, Jim spent many years making painstaking progress preparing the aircraft for an eventual restoration. And in 2009 the aircraft was sold to a well-known collector in the USA. The aircraft was shipped to their facility in Seattle, Washington. Shortly after its arrival, they asked Jim to come over and share his knowledge of the aircraft. I accompanied him on the trip. The collector’s team had laid out all the parts (every single bit!) in isles, up and down a huge warehouse. We sat my grandfather on a wheelie office chair, armed him with a good English cup of tea, and literally rolled him up and down from isle to isle while he identified and described in detail each part. Their team of engineers hurriedly made notes and could barely keep up with him. When he got going, his passion for aviation surpassed his age (around 80 at the time) and it was like chasing a kid around a sweet shop! Following Jim’s visit the aircraft was placed into storage, alongside a few other WWII aircraft, awaiting its turn in the workshop. Some work was started a few years later in the USA and then the entire project was relocated to the UK and placed with world-renowned warbird specialists The Aircraft Restoration Company (‘ARCo’) at Duxford. And it could not have gone to a better home. ARCo has a wealth of experience and specialist knowledge in working with warbirds. Since its arrival there, ARCo has done a tremendous job and has made not just excellent progress but has produced yet another example of outstanding craftsmanship.
At a Crossroads… The aircraft is now at an advanced stage of restoration and is at a unique crossroads for the next owner, who will have the choice of whether to return the aircraft to static condition or to flying condition. As the only surviving example of its kind, this Fw 189 is considered a rare piece indeed and would be the prized possession of many collectors. It will be very exciting to follow its journey once more and to see where it ends up. I hope I get to see it fly one day!

Atlas Air Service
Expands Through
Acquisition of AAL At the turn of the year 2021/2022, Germany’s Atlas Air Service expanded internationally by acquiring
100 percent of the shares of business aviation service provider AAL AG (formerly Altenrhein Aviation).
AAL, based in Altenrhein, eastern Switzerland (on Lake Constance) is a business aviation maintenance company and an authorised service centre for aircraft manufactured by Embraer Executive Jets, Gulfstream Aerospace (G150, G200, G280) and Daher (the TBM family). In addition, business aircraft of Cessna and Pilatus are also serviced. 50 employees generate a growing annual turnover of over 12 million Swiss francs. Natascha Rode, Managing Director of AAL AG, said: “In association with Atlas Air Service, we can serve our customers even better, for example through joint AOG services and better availability of spare parts within the group. In addition, Atlas can support us in digitalisation and marketing.”
John van Emden, Managing Director AAL, added: “Together with Atlas Air Service and Augsburg Air Service, we are a group that is five times larger than AAL AG. High-value test-equipment and tools can now be used within the whole group; thus we expand our competence — to the benefit of our customers.” Nicolas von Mende, CEO of Atlas Air Service, stated: “The employees and management of AAL AG have achieved a pleasingly positive development in recent years. We will support the future growth and secure it with our experience — as Atlas Air Service has already proven with Augsburg Air Service. The ambitious management in Altenrhein will remain fully responsible for running AAL AG.” Gregor Bremer, COO Atlas Air Service AG, noted: “Aircraft maintenance requires knowledge and experience — the more, the better. That is why our maintenance customers in Augsburg and in Bremen also benefit from the cooperation with Altenrhein.”

Buying a Jet in 2022? Tips to Start the Process If you are planning on buying a used business jet or turboprop in 2022, where do you begin? Dave Higdon shares some tips to help get your foray into the market off to the best start…
A
ccording to JETNET iQ’s December ‘Pulse’ report, what appeared as the nascent easing of business aircraft market pressures at mid-year took a battering from a pair of Covid-19 variants as the year rolled toward its inevitable conclusion. “Would-be buyers of late-model pre-owned aircraft have had few, if any, good alternatives to select from for much of the past 12-plus months, further bolstering OEM sales in an environment of stronger pricing,” the report said. For most of 2021, good, late-model pre-owned business aircraft have been in short supply. So much so that pricing helped make new-production models a financially competitive alternative to those attractive, late-model pre-owned aircraft – providing, of course, that you can find one that matches your operating needs. “For the OEMs, 2021 has been – and will continue to be – a year to long remember, when orders were well in excess of deliveries, and firm order backlogs were replenished,” said JETNET. “We expect that business jet manufacturers will deliver just shy of 700 new business jets in 2021, up approximately 11% over the Covid-reduced levels of 2020. “Year-over-year delivery volume increases will be broad-based across all aircraft size categories, led by a resurgent Textron Aviation.” Price competition helped boost those orders, at least in part because of demand for pre-owned jets and turboprops under 10 years old. And now, due to the two new Covid-19 variants, higher demand looks set to continue well into 2022. So, what should a would-be buyer do? If you hope to find the perfect business aircraft for your operation in 2022, you are going to need some trusted dealers and brokers on speed dial. At a time where buyers are already active – and prices are rising – shop early, and shop diligently.
The Fundamentals Still Apply…
Hard times may tempt the unwise to hurry the process and jump on the first “good deal” to present itself. The old proverb “act in haste, repent at leisure” would certainly apply here. Rushing the process could cost the buyer in many ways. It is always best to define and use the process that’s helped many a rookie buyer land their best deal knowing that their choice was wise and wellinformed.
While it is difficult to imagine starting the shopping process too early into the New Year, to do so you will need clear definition of what exactly is needed. Following, we’ve provided some tips and pointers to help establish that definition. Defining your needs could be the toughest step, especially if you are a first-time owner who is new to the processes, terms, and common knowledge. Here are some tips to help get the process off on the right footing…
1. Mission Minima
You will need a well-defined vision of the mission need for your private jet or turboprop to help ensure you do not buy too much, or too little performance and capacity. Establish how many seats need to be occupied on a typical trip in the cabin, and how often additional or fewer seats may be needed. Will the airplane need to provide more than the average luggage space? And who will be flying aboard the aircraft most of the time? Executives, technicians, or others? By establishing this, you can build a picture of how the cabin needs to function, and the types of equipage your passengers will need to have on your newly-acquired aircraft to enable them to function at optimal capacity.
“Chartering for the occasional longer-range or higher capacity needs beyond your regular mission profile would be the prudent way to go.” 2. Where Will You Fly?
What is the ideal range of the aircraft you need to buy? Are you planning on flying shorter legs within your own continent, or to traverse vast swathes of ocean on lengthy trans-continental trips across multiple time-zones? With capabilities ranging from just over 1,000 nautical miles, to approximately 7,500nm, the options available from today’s business jets can be dizzying – especially when you consider that the published range number of an aircraft can be impacted by the payload it’s carrying (and various other factors). So, the answer to ‘where will you fly?’ needs to be married to ‘with whom?’ It is wise to determine what percentage of anticipated travel the aircraft will need to cover as well, and what percentage would it make better sense to utilize supplemental lift (charter)? Factoring in the costs of ownership, it would make little sense to buy a bigger jet that can cover
WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com
an extra 10% of your flying needs, when a smaller (less costly to buy and operate) airplane can cover 90% of your mission needs. Focus on your core mission needs. Chartering for the occasional longer-range or higher capacity needs beyond your regular mission profile would be the prudent way to go.
3. Budget Matters
A business aircraft can do wonders for the company that owns it. That’s why so many successful businesses use them in their day-to-day work. Business aircraft pay off. Nevertheless, the sums of money involved to own one can be daunting – particularly for a new owner. It’s vital to understand all of these, and have a budget for a projected period of ownership. Some costs will vary, while others are fixed. Maintenance; hangar rental; insurance; crew costs; fuel; navigation charts; software updates for the pilots’ devices; and any upgrades a candidate aircraft on the pre-owned market will need – these all add up. But you should create a budget for them once the aircraft type has been determined.
Start the Process Now
It’s impossible to predict how many of any given aircraft type will be available at any given time on the market, according to various experts polled. They recommend starting the search process early in 2022 – right after agreeing on the need. Consult with a trusted broker, dealer, or wellversed consultant to help answer mission-related questions, the search, and finally the selection, including pre-purchase inspections, and registration issues. They will ultimately save you a lot of time and expense, and maximize the chance of success for your upcoming foray on the market. With your mission questions answered, you can get a running start right off the bat. So give your company the benefit of putting time on your side as you enter the pre-owned business aircraft market in 2022. T

AERO-DIENST
Celebrates 15 Years in Vienna Aero-Dienst, the Nuremberg-based full-service provider for Business Aviation and air ambulance services, is celebrating 15 successful years of operations for its maintenance line station in Vienna. In 2006, Aero-Dienst began providing line services to Vienna-based Learjet operators and has steadily expanded the range of both its services and its authorisations to work on a wider variety of aircraft models and manufacturers, thereby continually increasing its capacity over the years. In 2017, Dassault Aviation designated the Vienna line station as an Authorized Service Center. According to Aero-Dienst, this success story has only been possible due to the efforts of the enthusiastic and highly competent Vienna team, which has grown to 10 employees in the last five years. It includes five licensed technicians with multiple type ratings, each of whom has more than 20 years of experience in aircraft maintenance. The team currently completes up to 500 maintenance events per year.
Christian Weigl (left), Manager Maintenance Line Stations Austria, and André Ebach (right), Head of Maintenance at Aero-Dienst
A component shop for wheels and batteries has been integrated into the Vienna line station, making replacement parts available as required. “In general, our work is guided by our customers’ requirements, as well as those of potential customers,” said Christian Weigl, Head of Aero-Dienst’s Vienna Station. “So, we have set ourselves the goal of steadily expanding our maintenance portfolio to new aircraft types, and growing in a circumspect way.” In addition to the Vienna station and its headquarters in Nuremberg, AeroDienst operates a station in Klagenfurt, and this year saw the opening of a maintenance station in Oberpfaffenhofen, near Munich. Meanwhile, its component shop in Landsberg am Lech allows Aero-Dienst to provide fast and local repairs for maintenance operators in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The Image Makers of Aerial Work Aviation Do you really know what Aerial Photography is? Or, put another way, do you know what this devoted Aerial Work aviation sector does? Patrick Ryan ‘captures’ the right aspect of this industry for you and highlights many informative and interesting qualities of this unique ‘Image Maker’ aviation business sector. You’ve probably heard it many times: “One picture is worth a thousand words.” In the case of Aerial Photography, that is the primary purpose or ‘focus’ of this sector of Aerial Work aviation, i.e., the effort of visually fixing time within the framework of space or to communicate and document moments in time using aerial imagery. Aerial Photography is an interesting niche that the Aerial Work aviation sector uses for many different purposes, including countless types of Aerial Photography applications. In Aerial Work aviation, Aerial Photography refers to capturing different types of images or photographs from an elevated position using an aircraft. So, what really is Aerial Work Aerial Photography? Symbolically, Aerial Photography has to adopt all the parameters of taking a good camera picture — that is, ‘Depth of Focus, Depth of Field, Composition, Light, and Focus.’ With this proven professional photographic approach to taking useful, informative, and effective pictures, the Aerial Photography sector is no different and aims to ensure that aerial imagery is captured safely and accurately for the average casual viewer. 30 AERIAL WORK EUROPE FEBRUARY 2022
Depth of Focus: What is Aerial Photography?
air balloons, early innovators also used kites, pigeons, and rockets to carry their cameras aloft.
Aerial Photography is the endeavour or effort of taking photographs or video images (i.e., Aerial Videography) from a commercial aircraft, be it a manned or unmanned airborne platform.
Following this, the first aerial photograph taken from an aeroplane was in 1909, by Wilbur Wright. Wilbur was in Italy, engaged in selling planes to the Italian government, when he carried a passenger who filmed motion pictures of a military field near Rome.
Aerial Photography is one of the most conventional, versatile, and economic forms of remote sensing. Even more so today with the advent of unmanned technology. But, again, it is a means of fixing time within the framework of space. Aerial Photography was the first method of remote sensing and is still heavily used today in the era of satellites, laser scanners, and many other types of sensors. Not to be confused with other types of elevated bird's-eye views or aerial imaging efforts, Aerial Photography typically refers to aircraft taking aerial images that focus on landscapes, earth surface objects, and man-made structures. Aerial Photography is not Airto-Air Photography (which will be a separate article in the future), where aircraft are used as chase planes to photograph other aircraft in flight. Additionally, Aerial Photography is not the process of capturing elevated images from structures firmly fixed to the ground (e.g., pole-fitted surveillance cameras, Skycam at indoor events, or crane-mounted cameras). The bottom line that ‘Aerial Work Aerial Photography’ captures an image from an airborne aircraft to satisfy a commercial purpose, i.e., a service provided to a private person, business owner, or government decision-maker.
Depth of Field: Where Did It All Start? Even before the Wright Brothers took flight in 1903, aerial photographs were taken from hot air balloons as early as the mid-1800s. In 1855, Gasper Felix Tournachon took the first aerial photograph from a balloon over Paris. Progressively, improvements in photographic technology made it easier to take cameras into the skies. Besides hot
With the advent of World War I, Aerial Photography soon replaced sketching and illustrations provided by aerial observers. The majority of the battle maps used by both sides were produced from aerial photographs and, by the end of the war, both sides recorded the entire front at least twice a day. Additionally, with a constant demand for intelligence, new types of cameras and other remotesensing sensors were specifically designed and produced for use in aircraft. During World War II and the following the Cold War, Aerial Photography (i.e., Aerial Reconnaissance) continued to expand and provide critical intelligence to military and world leaders. New types of aircraft or modified aircraft, practices (flying high and fast) and imagery technology increased dramatically during this period. Examples of this evolution include: World War II (Tactical Reconnaissance) •
Spitfire PR (Photographic Reconnaissance) Configured with two to five cameras (e.g., F24 cameras) and a camera bay heating system to prevent camera parts from freezing at high altitudes.
•
P-38 Lighting or F-4/F-5 Variants – Configured with four cameras (e.g., K-17 cameras) in the nose compartment replacing the nose-mounted machine guns and cannon.
Cold War (Strategic Reconnaissance) •

Composition: What are the Applications of Aerial Photography? When it comes to identifying the types of Aerial Photography applications that support a diverse set of commercial, industrial, agricultural, governmental, and private clients, the sector seeks to provide Aerial Photography and Videography services to business owners, managers, and individual decision-makers. These end-users recognise the value of both visual and quantitative information to drive their decisions, or even private citizens wishing to memorialise a special event, occasion, or place. Some of today’s primary, sought-after applications and services the Aerial Photography community provides are: Mapping – Aerial Photography mapping allows for capturing almost any type of terrain, from construction sites to farms. Aerial Mapping is vertical aerial Photography (a.k.a., satellite view, aerial survey, orthophotos, or orthomosaics) taken straight-down (nadir) from an aircraft. Mapping images are used as workable data, such as for aerial photo maps, or to produce Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). Inspection – Aerial inspection photography or videography provides the means to inspect construction projects, mining management activities, utility structures (tower, solar & windmill) from an elevated 2D and 3D perspective. Volumetrics – Aerial volumetrics photography measures the volume of a subject, e.g., measuring the volume of dirt stockpiles, the amount of dirt removed from a hole, or checking an area’s flatness. Primarily used by the gas, oil, and mining industries, aerial volumetrics surveys acquire images, process data using photogrammetry, and compute stockpile volumes. Over the past ten years, unmanned aircraft have made this type of measurement quick, safe, and significantly less expensive than traditional ground or manned aircraft-based measurement methods. Real Estate – Commercial and residential real estate aerial photography and videography provide imagery to help buyers and sellers assess and market their properties. Aerial Photography has been a part of the real estate market for a long time; however, images taken of property have traditionally been captured from manned aircraft and reserved for only the most expensive listings. Like volumetric photography, unmanned platforms have significantly reduced the cost of Aerial Photography and have expanded the demand for this type of service over the past decade.
Fixed-Wing
Focus – Who are the Image Makers of Aerial Photography? fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft support the Aerial Photography (and Videography) sector. Aircraft and effective equipment are selected for individual tasks based on their suitability for the assignment and return on investment. Manned Aircraft Regarding manned aircraft, the primary class is light highwing GA aircraft, i.e., from single-engine to twin-engine, light helicopters and ultralights, and from piston to turbine engine. Besides many makes and models of aircraft used in Aerial Photography operations, the following aircraft can be observed regularly around the world capturing professional photos and videos: Fixed-Wing
Regarding the Image Makers who provide such critical Aerial Photography services, and like many Aerial Work aviation sectors, the industry generally consists of small, decentralised manned and unmanned aircraft businesses with a one-person owner and operator, to a small staff and fleet of aircraft. Along with this, some firms only provide Aerial Photography services while, for others, it is one of many services they offer, e.g., charter flights, flight training, aircraft sales, scenic flights, etc. Additionally, when it comes to Aerial Photography, these firms will provide full-service video and photo pre-shot planning, production, and post-flight editing — or they may support existing teams that require their aerial expertise. Plus, some firms fly both manned and unmanned aircraft while others solely operate helicopters, drones, or light fixed-wing aircraft.

Unmanned Aircraft On the unmanned (drone) side of ‘Aerial Work Aviation Aerial Photography’, the dominant platform for taking images is the rotor-wing type aircraft. Currently, unmanned rotor-wing craft dominate because of their stability and flexibility whether focusing on a target that can be captured indoors or outdoors. However, new Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) type fixed-wing aircraft designs will slowly compete with the rotor-wing drone community because of their ability to leverage the benefits of both rotor and fixed-wing capabilities. As with manned aircraft, the following unmanned platforms are designed and steadily used to capture expert photos and videos for numerous types of clients in all industry sectors:
The Last Image Without a doubt, the committed photographers, operators, and aircrew members of the Aerial Work aviation sector of Aerial Photography guarantee the elements of taking a good camera picture of ‘Depth of Focus, Depth of Field, Composition, Light and Focus’ is reliable and detailed. Also, the term ‘Aerial Photography’ for this Aerial Work sector is more than that. It consists of many practical applications or services that provide valuable information to commercial, industrial, agricultural, governmental, and private clients. As you can see, the Aerial Photography sector of Aerial Work aviation is a critical ‘focal point’ of the imagery world and the aviation community. Without imagery and the birds-eye view, we would have a hard time learning about the past, understanding our current world, or planning for the future.
Light: What are the aircraft used in Aerial Photography? As mentioned before, the Aerial Photography sector has leveraged everything from fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, balloons, blimps, rockets, kites, and even pigeons. Today, the sector has expanded even more. It takes images from various new platforms like unmanned aircraft, ultralights, and even the basic human body, i.e., skydiving and wing-suiting. Along with this, the cameras and associated capabilities have expanded beyond a photographer manually operating a camera to digitally controlling a camera remotely or pre-programming it to take an image at the right place and time. Like any unique enterprise, many manned and unmanned

Héli-Béarn to Operate Multi-Mission Kodiak 100 for Paratroop Dropping Tests
Héli-Béarn has been contracted by France’s defence procurement agency to perform paratroop drops that will test and validate parachute systems for the French armed forces. Based at Pau-Pyrenees airport, Héli-Béarn is the first operator in France of Daher’s Kodiak 100 multi-mission aircraft. The contract was awarded by the aeronautical techniques expert centre of France’s General Directorate of Armament (DGA-AT) and covers the rental of a Héli-Béarn Kodiak 100 for a period of five years at the rate of 200 flight hours annually. “The contract acknowledges the Kodiak 100’s multi-mission efficiency and performance, as well as the quality of HéliBéarn’s flight operations,” said Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division. “It also represents another DGA recognition of Daher’s products and services. We have performed operational support maintenance for the DGA’s TBM 700 aircraft for

nearly 30 years, along with avionics modernisation on its helicopters. More recently, the DGA ordered a fleet of four new TBM 940s for its support and training missions – with all of these aircraft now delivered.” Héli-Béarn operates two Kodiak 100s, both of which entered service with the company earlier this year in southwestern France. One of them is equipped for the deployment of paratroopers, and has already logged nearly 200 flight hours performing some 600 rotations for civilian skydiving centres in France. The Héli-Béarn Kodiak 100 also has welcomed students from the French military’s School of Airborne Troops (ETAP), which trains paratroopers for the country’s armed forces and its Gendarmerie national police force. Héli-Béarn says it performs transportation and aerial work with both fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters, while also providing aviation maintenance, training and consulting services.

A 400-HOUR TBO EXTENSION IS REAL VALUE Lycoming holds itself to its own standard – the Lycoming Standard. It is a bar, continuously raised, to be better than everyone, including ourselves. For example, our recent 200-hour TBO extensions give our customers more flying time, increased cost efficiency, and peace of mind. In some cases, 400-hour TBO extensions can be approved. Genuine Lycoming engines and parts are held to high quality standards, offer improved wear characteristics, and incorporate Lycoming’s latest innovations and enhancements. Add all this to our customer service, which is unmatched in general aviation, and a factory warranty, and you quickly realize that a genuine Lycoming engine is the right choice. There is no substitute for the reliability and durability that you expect and receive from Lycoming. Don’t trust your safety to imitations. Choose a genuine Lycoming.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation
They help to keep you safe
