hat versatility is part of the Kodiak heritage. Originally built to fly services and supplies to the world’s most remote regions, the Kodiak continues to build on its rugged humanitarian mission roots. Today the unique sport utility aircraft masters many missions. The Kodiak 100 is now used for air ambulance evacuations, firefighting support, skydiving operations, surveillance, and wildlife management. Not to mention exciting getaways to the back-country, or your favourite hidden fishing lake.
T
“I flew different multi-mission aircraft in the past,” said Mark Brown, Kodiak chief
demo pilot, “But believe me, if you ever fly a Kodiak, you will not want to fly anything else any more. It’s just fascinating.” With its carbon-fibre floats (amphib floats and straight floats), and corrosion proofing inside and out, the Kodiak offers exceptional water operation performance. In addition, the new skingap sealant on the lower fuselage of the Series III provides improved corrosion protection. Meanwhile the Kodiak’s pitch-latch propeller maintains a fine pitch when shutting down, giving pilots greater control and safety when using floats. And this also allows you to manoeuvre around docks easily.

When you are not dealing with docks, the Kodiak’s exceptional short takeoff and landing (STOL) capabilities will amaze you as well. You can take off and land in less than 1,000 ft (300 m), conquering even the roughest terrain or unimproved backcountry airstrips. With plenty of power and a reduced possibility of stalling due to the discontinuous leading-edge wing design, the Kodiak flies where others cannot. No runway, no problem.
EASA Certified Seaplane The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified the Kodiak 100 for seaplane floats use in the following configuration: • Kodiak 100 aircraft • Aerocet 6650 amphibious floats • Standby battery STC • MT five-bladed propeller We will take a close look at these individually. But, first, let’s see how the EASA type certification came about – with the help of Kodiak’s long-time European dealer, based at Mönchengladbach Airport in Germany. Rheinland Air Service (RAS) has been the European Dealer and Authorized Service Center for Kodiak Aircraft since 2014. RAS provides Kodiak sales, maintenance, service and training all from one convenient source. The company has been an Approved Training Organization (ATO) for the Kodiak since 2017, and is the only European ATO offering EASA certified training for the Kodiak 100 on floats. RAS just delivered its first Kodiak 100 on floats to a customer in southern Europe, the first Kodiak seaplane in operation there. But another two Kodiak Seaplanes were also sold by RAS and will soon be delivered for use in northern Europe.
location would interfere with optional equipment like the TKS tank for the deicing system or with the hydraulic hand pumps for the floats. To overcome these limitations the subcontracted German engineering company, an EASA Part 21J design organisation, developed an STC that reorganises the battery arrangement. The company implemented a larger battery, housed in fireproof casing which can be installed in the nose of the aircraft. Besides allowing EASA-registered owners to use floats, the solution provides about a 20 percent weight saving, compared to the normal European battery installation. That’s a nice bonus.
“With its carbon-fibre floats and corrosion proofing inside and out, the
MT Propeller and Aerocet Floats Add Flexibility
Kodiak offers
Another important component of the EASA certified seaplane configuration is the fivebladed MT propeller from Germany. Long known as a high-performance upgrade, an MT propeller provides numerous advantages resulting in a significantly improved take-off performance. The prop’s advanced vibration damping leads to a noteworthy reduction in cabin noise, up to 5 decibels, while also reducing vibration-related pilot fatigue. With their greater ground clearance, MT propellers offer unlimited blade life with fewer foreign object debris (FOD) concerns. In fact, the blades are FOD repairable.
exceptional
Because of their long business relationship with the propeller manufacturer, RAS was instrumental in the engineering and EASA approval process, even providing extensive test flights. The MT propeller most of all complies with the strict German enhanced noise regulations, allowing unrestricted airport operation.
water operation performance.” The Aerocet 6650 amphibious floats complete the package. Lighter than aluminium, the lightweight carbon-composite floats allow you to land on both solid ground and water. The floats feature a gear advisory system that provides an audible announcement for gear positions and “check gear” conditions. There are illuminated indicators for each gear wheel and position. The backlit display makes for easy reading, while a dimmer adjustment and test feature are available as well.
®
Rheinland Air Service Aids EASA Certification Rheinland Air Service was also instrumental in gaining the EASA supplemental type certification (STC) for Kodiak Aircraft in parachute and floats configuration. RAS worked closely with its partners and service providers to make this happen. Unlike the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), EASA required its registered Kodiak 100 owners to retrofit a third battery to initially comply with European regulations. But the Field Service Instructions in FSI-148 for the standby battery system created some challenges for floatplane use. In normal use, the third battery is installed behind the engine firewall in the cabin, between the crew seats. But in a seaplane, that space is needed for the lever controlling the float landing gear. . A creative solution was needed. In preparation for EASA certification, RAS commissioned the development of a Kodiak 100 battery modification. RAS worked with the aircraft company, EASA, and a German engineering firm to develop and gain approval for the necessary modification. RAS even furnished its own Kodiak aircraft during the development in just eight weeks. The plane was made available for engineering processes, installation, testing, and final STC approval by EASA. As mentioned, the normal standby battery location is unsuitable for seaplanes. The normal WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com

The amphibious floats have an electric hydraulic pump system. It works with low average pressure to reduce maintenance. Built-in pressure relief guards protect against thermal or hand pump pressure. The system is designed for simplicity and user-friendliness, such as easy fluid level reading. These advanced floats let the Kodiak go where other planes cannot. That is the charm of the Kodiak – the ability to adventure everywhere. The aircraft is as strong and reliable as a truck, with the refinements of a sport utility vehicle. A choice of interior packages lets you customise the Kodiak for business, pleasure or both.
Executive Option The Series III aircraft offers an eight-seat Executive Edition cabin option. This choice includes club-style seating for passengers, air conditioning with separate zone controls for both cockpit and cabin, plus increased oxygen capacity. Whether you choose the preferred Summit package or the Timberline, comfort and flexibility await. Speaking of flexibility, the Timberline’s leather seats can be removed in about 30 seconds! This lets you convert from passengers to cargo, with easy cargo loading through the large square door in no time.
Powerful Performance, Advanced Avionics Powered by a reliable 750 horsepower Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 turboprop engine, the new Kodiak delivers the performance needed for any mission. The Kodiak has a power-to-weight ratio of 9.67lbs/horsepower. That is 20 percent better than the closest competition. Newly integrated into the Kodiak Series III cockpit is the next-generation Garmin G1000
NXi avionics suite. The G1000 NXi offers a combination of standard and optional features that ease pilot workload, while increasing situational awareness and safety. One of the most popular new standard features is the Flight Stream 510. This technology allows pilots to transfer flight plans and databases to the G1000 NXi from their mobile devices over Bluetooth. Other technology and safety upgrades in the Series III are the first integration of Garmin’s GWX 75 Doppler-capable, fully stabilised colour weather radar. The high-resolution radar’s colour palette visualises more detailed contouring of storm cells. It also provides exceptional range and adjustable scanning profiles. Cockpit technology also includes the GFC700 autopilot with full envelope protection and level mode, an angle-of-attack (AOA) indicator, SurfaceWatch runway monitoring, ChartView capabilities, and the Synthetic Vision Technology useful for virtual flight reference.
Peace of Mind Maintenance Policies Furthermore, with the Series III, Kodiak is now including several maintenance policies with their aircraft. These help protect your investment, so you can continue flying memorable adventures for many years. All-inclusive Kodiak Care covers scheduled maintenance for up to your fourth annual inspection, or 1,000 flight hours, whichever comes first. The PT6A-34 turboprop engine is protected with 400 hours of Pratt & Whitney Canada’s Gold-level ESP Maintenance Plan coverage. One year of CAMP maintenance tracking as well as a one-year Garmin NavData subscription are included with the Kodiak 100 Series III. Kodiak also offers 24/7/365 technical support and aircraft on ground (AOG) response. Another reason for peace of mind is the manufacturer of the Kodiak, Daher. Daher produces two leading families of turboprop airplanes. The company builds the very fast, pressurised TBM aircraft in Tarbes, France; and Daher also builds the rugged, versatile Kodiak in Sandpoint, Idaho, USA. “With a familyowned company history dating back to 1863, and a current presence in 13 countries worldwide, you can depend on Daher,” said the company.

Empowering Your Next Adventures The Kodiak was born as a rugged bush plane, capable of humanitarian missions under the worst possible conditions. Since then it has seen improvement continuously, resulting in the Series III. The 10-seat Kodiak 100 is now the safest, most modern and versatile STOL turboprop. “With these latest upgrades and quality improvements,” said Nicolas Chabbert, CEO of Kodiak Aircraft, “the most modern, rugged and reliable aircraft in its class is now even better with the Kodiak 100 Series III.” The Kodiak offers incredible performance. Imagine being able to take off and land in less than 1,000ft (300m). That lets you tame even the toughest terrain or roughest runways. Combining that remarkable STOL capability with its heavy payload capacity, the Kodiak 100 is ideal for governmental or institutional missions. But with its comfortable interior, ample storage, and economy, the Kodiak can also fill gaps in your corporate fleet, freight operation, or charter service. No other aircraft in the world today matches the Kodiak’s seaplane performance, efficiency, cost and safety. The plane is extraordinarily stable in the air and on the water. A water landing is like “touching down on a cushion” and a takeoff from water is very quick. The Kodiak also handles rough water very well. The Kodiak is at home in the air or on the water.

Bucharest Aerospace Museum Needs Old Airframes! Romania has a rich aviation history. The country is situated in the south-east of Europe on a sunny and beautiful plain with mountain landscapes. It had great aviation pioneers and engineers, such as Aurel Vlaicu, Traian Vuia, and Henri Coanda. Mechanical engineer Marian Madelin explains how he started the Bucharest Aerospace Museum at Clinceni Airfield, approximately an hour’s drive from the Romanian capital city, and how he is seeking donations of historic aircraft. In their memory and to honour aviation in general, not only Romanian aviation but aviation history all over the world, I decided to initiate a project called Bucharest Aerospace Museum — a new museum, with new ideas, based on education and educating people about aviation science, its history, and its impact on our lives. Since the old Romanian Air Force Aviation Museum is now more like a junk yard, I decided it’s time for a new chapter, a chapter with something never seen before in this part of the world. But the road ahead is tough, and the museum cannot take shape without the support and help of donors and sponsors. We are happy for them to help with whatever they can, especially donations or sponsorships of items, material for exhibition, such as old airframes, aircraft, no matter if it’s a fixed-wing or a helicopter. The museum will be run and maintained by volunteers, so it will not have any relation or connection with finance or business programmes, in order for the misinterpretation to be avoided. The museum will be a static display or exhibition in open space, in an open field, outside, so no indoor space will be dedicated for this project. Because the indoor space has its own rules and regulations,
sanitary, medical rules, security and safety protocols etc. But a museum in open space like this project will be a very good source for summer camps or summer trips for children and students who want to be part of the aviation community. Students and children will have the opportunity to get involved in the learning process about the history of each item on display, with a short history lesson for each craft, how it was built, when, where — quick things that allow our visitors to become familiar with the environment. Each item will be properly taken care of — volunteer security and guard-watch will be put in place including for parts in storage before they are assembled. The museum will be more of a community, and both national and international visitors will be allowed from every corner of the world, no matter their religion, race, or colour. The museum will also have a national campaign of friends, donors and sponsors enlisting in the project in the near future, as it evolves and grows bigger. Seeing some old Russian airframes in very poor condition in the Romanian Air Force Aviation Museum, totally abandoned and
ignored by authorities who are not interested in them, got me wondering why people fail to do things. It is because they lack the management vision and coordination with groups, and teams of people who are willing to help. Aviation communities nowadays in Romania are just a shadow of their mighty past. Everything was destroyed, scrapped, thrown away, abandoned, forgotten. There are some small civilian flying schools and airfields, plus military aviation which is not so committed in preserving the past. I am trying to change that by establishing something nice, something to inspire the people, something that shares a bit from the life of the aviation sponsors who will support the museum — something that will resurrect a fraction of the beautiful aviation past that this country had. And something that will tell the world a different story about international aviation, what it was, when it was, how it evolved. Vlaicu, Vuia and Coanda had a dream: to make aviation free and accessible for all. A very beautiful universe with its own magic. It could be an opportunity for people to actually sit in a fighter jet and even, possibly, participate in a demo flight in an aircraft. It all depends on the people that will be joining this quest!" ■
Some aircraft have already been donated from Germany, the USA and Canada — including a Rutan Long EZ (pictured – from Toronto), Piper PA-28 in need of rebuilding, BD-5, and a SZD-30 glider. According to Marian Madelin, even when aircraft are donated, there is still the cost of transportation and logistics of these aircraft from their current locations to think about, and there is no funding available in Romania. He hopes to one day offer free demo flights to visitors using one or two functional aircraft from the fleet, “to offer a unique experience.”

CHOOSE YOUR AVIONICS WITH CARE, SAYS AVIDYNE Avidyne is always adding capabilities to its product line, many of which are unique and ground-breaking. BREAKING DOWN THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURES OF THE AVIDYNE IFD With so many FMS/GPS/NAV/COM options on the market it can be difficult (not to mention confusing) to know which flight management system offers the best features. Just as important, which GPS navigator best suits your flying needs and upgrade budget.
All IFDs are equipped with Avidyne’s beautiful Synthetic Vision (SVS) for improved situational awareness. SVS is fully integrated and requires no additional boxes or wires, providing 3D display of terrain, obstacles, airports, traffic and more on the IFDs. All IFD systems offer Terrain Awareness capability which can be displayed over the color-contoured terrain base map for easy pilot alerting of a potential encounter with nearby terrain.
It should be noted not all GPS navigators are built the same. Some offer more in special features and capabilities while others are more simplified and offer the basics. To help you make a truly informed decision, we thought we would break down the most unique features of the IFD5-Series and what makes this a true FMS.
For an even greater measure of safety, Forward Looking Terrain Alerting (FLTA) actively projects the aircraft’s flight track in time to determine whether a collision with terrain or obstacles is imminent. Yellow caution alerts are provided when a collision with terrain is projected within approximately 60 seconds, and red warning alerts are provided for terrain projected within approximately 30 seconds.
Hybrid Touch: Touchscreen with Knobs and Buttons
3D Traffic, Obstacles and Airport Flags
Hybrid Touch is an amalgamation of both touchscreen and knobs and buttons. This exclusive feature Is not only unique to the Avidyne IFD Series, but it is also popular among pilots. Many pilots prefer knobs and buttons for frequent pilot actions, especially in turbulent weather when touchscreen can become difficult to manage. Pilots have the capability to perform virtually all the same functions via the touchscreen interface or using the knobs and buttons. Additionally, the IFDs offer multi-touch functionalities such as pinch-zoom, map panning, and graphical flight plan editing that can be implemented using the touchscreen, or knobs and buttons, depending on the pilot’s phase of flight.
The IFD uses standard high, low, and grouping symbology clearly depict obstacles on the SVS display. 3D Traffic uses standard traffic symbology with traffic depictions indicating relative threat level by their size and relative altitude and bearing. As traffic draws nearer to you, the traffic symbols increase in size on the IFD screen with clearly depicted obstacles using color-coded threat levels based on hazard level.
SBAS/LPV Vertical Guidance Approaches As an SBAS/LPV-certified approach GPS navigator, the Avidyne IFDs meet the equipment performance and functional requirements to conduct RNP terminal departure, arrival, and approach procedures. This feature allows pilots to enjoy coupled Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) Approaches and it has never been easier. The Avidyne IFDs provide automatic flight control guidance to a robust list of certified autopilots, navigation indicators and EFIS systems. And, for turbine aircraft equipped with legacy EFIS flight decks such as Collins Proline 21 and Honeywell Primus 1000, the IFD system offers Avidyne’s exclusive GPS Legacy Aviation System (GLAS) software capability which enables full LPV approach capability without the need of external LRUs or costly upgrades to the integrated flight deck. GLAS provides a simple-to-install method enabling legacy pre-WAAS EFIS flight decks to fly GPS approaches with vertical guidance. It offers different configurations appropriate for most legacy EFIS flight decks. IFDs provide approved ADS-B position data as well as being the least expensive, quickest, and most functional way to add LPV capability to these legacy EFIS aircraft.

3D Synthetic Vision with Terrain Awareness and FLTA
Worldwide Electronic Charts and Airport Diagrams The IFD5-Series includes Electronic Approach Charts & Airport Diagrams. Utilising Jeppesen’s Jeppview charts subscription services, which provides worldwide approach charts and a database of over 6,000 airport diagrams, most of which are geo-referenced, the IFD allows for the display of your own-ship and flight-plan position right on the chart or airport diagram.
Integrated Bluetooth & WiFi: Access ForeFlight, SkyDemon, and the IFD100 App for iPad Avidyne’s IFD GPS navigators are the only flight management systems in aviation that offer both built-in Bluetooth and WiFi. This unique feature allows you to connect your IFD to your iPad to provide access to thirdparty EFBs like ForeFlight and, most recently, SkyDemon, Europe’s most popular VFR planning app. Pilots also gain access to Avidyne’s exclusive IFD100 App for iPad. The IFD100 App mirrors all functions of the IFD and acts as an additional instance. You can edit your flight plan, monitor your map for traffic (with SkyTrax600 TAS or SkyTrax ADS-B In solutions), and view pages independently. The IFD and IFD100 App are cross-synced, meaning tasks you perform on one platform will automatically be updated on the other. The IFD100 App for iPad is a free download available on the Apple App Store.
MODERN UPGRADE MADE SIMPLE Avidyne’s modern panel upgrade sets a new standard in aviation navigation systems. Designed with real world flying conditions in mind, Avidyne’s IFD Series FMS/GPS/NAV/COM incorporates a feature-rich, affordable solution that will dramatically increase flight deck capabilities while decreasing pilot workload. The Avidyne IFD Series is a WAAS GPS Approach certified navigation system that integrates the latest in navigation technology.

JUNE 2021
FERRY FLIGHT SERVICES The "Movers" of Aerial Work Aviation Ferry flight services is not a ‘one-off’ activity of transferring an aircraft from Point A to B. Rather ferry flying is a unique flight service that brings together a wide and rather complex range of operational functions and expertise. In this month’s issue of the ‘Aerial Work’ section of GA Buyer Europe, Patrick Ryan highlights what makes ferry flying a unique and standalone business sector of aerial work aviation. If you ever wondered what ferry flying is, it is basically the effort of transporting or moving aircraft under their own power. Specifically, ferry flying is the flying of aircraft to deliver new or pre-owned aircraft to customers or the next owner, moving from one base of operations to another or relaying for maintenance, repair, or to conduct a special operation. Depending on the condition or airworthiness of an aircraft, most ferry flights are conducted without passengers and are non-passenger revenue-making events. Ferry flights are typically flown by dedicated pilots (‘ferry pilots’), owner of the aircraft, or both in some cases. When it comes to dedicated ferry pilots, it is more than just a loose network of freelance pilots but a standalone business sector. This business sector consists of many small and large aviation firms focused on managing the many complex physical and bureaucratic hurdles or actions associated with ferrying an aircraft. So, what is this sector of aviation, and what can you expect if you ever want to ferry an aircraft and need the services of a ferry-flight company?
Proud Beginning Before going into what ferry flight services provide today, it is interesting to see how this sector began and to explore its legacy.
20 AERIAL WORK EUROPE JUNE 2021
The concept of ferrying aircraft under their own power began in World War II. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the idea of ferrying aircraft as a service was non-existent because of early aircraft technological limitations, the tyranny of distance, and the lack of demand for such services.
Command. Another interesting legacy was the development of organised ferry routes between North America and combat theatres referred to as the "North Atlantic air ferry routes,” i.e., the forefather of the North Atlantic Tracks (NAT-OTS) and many other international air traffic routes.
However, with the outbreak of World War II and the loss of much military kit on the continent, the need for Allied forces to purchase replacement gear, i.e. aircraft from the United States, became critical.
Ferry Flights & Aircraft
Initially, aircraft were flown to airports in north-eastern Canada, partially disassembled before being loaded on ship for transportation to the UK, where they were unloaded and re-assembled. This process could take several weeks, not counting repairing any damage to the aircraft incurred in the shipment. In addition, German Uboats operating in the North Atlantic Ocean were a constant menace to shipping routes, making it very dangerous for merchant shipping with the loss of much strategic war material. With this, allied forces focused on ferrying aircraft that had the flight range to cross the Atlantic region vs. shipping, i.e., the beginning of organised ferry-flight operations. Some of the noteworthy organisations that led the way for the ferry flight business sector were the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA), Atlantic Ferry Organization (Atfero), RAF Ferry Command, and Air Transport
Today, the Ferry Flight service sector has gone beyond moving military aircraft on a wartime footing to supporting the needs of a quickly expanded post-war civil aviation industry. Stakeholders from recreational aircraft owners, to business jet operators, to the major airlines of the world routinely rely on the need to move aircraft outside of their primary use or intent, i.e., ‘ferrying.’

In the ferry flight service sector, ferrying is just not ferrying but can be broken up into specific types of operations that each have their unique intent and requirements. Some of these are: Delivery Flights - A delivery flight refers to the actual handing to another an aircraft to complete a transaction. In most cases, it is the delivery of a new aircraft from the manufacturer like a Diamond DA-42 assembled in Austria to its customer in Singapore, or the physical transfer of a Gulfstream III from one private owner to another.

ASOG 2.qxp_GAB Master LEFT 07/05/2021 15:12 Page 2
Positioning Flights - A positioning flight moves any plane from one point to another for an operational purpose other than to accomplish its primary task and is not a transaction, e.g. the aircraft needs to be relocated for repairs or maintenance, or it could be because the flight ended at a different airfield from the location its next scheduled route begins. Airlines and air charter companies routinely use these types of flights to minimise disruptions in their schedules. Aircraft Repossession (‘Repo’) Flights - On the unpleasant side of the ferry-flying business, aircraft repossession flights consist of collecting and delivering an aircraft far away with a backlog of unpaid bills back to its title owner. Repo flights usually require coordination with local courts and authorities and obtaining a repossession order. As you can imagine, this is not a standard ferry flight service but a specialised service that is required occasionally.

Types of Aircraft Ferried
No matter the type of ferry flight, the ferry-flight service sector can fly any aircraft, from a light Piper J-3 Cub to a heavy Airbus A380. The spectrum of aircraft that have or can be transported are: • Light Single and Multi-Engine Props (e.g. Cirrus SR20, Diamond DA42, Vulcanair P68R, etc.) • Light Single Engine Turboprops (e.g. Cessna 208, Pilatus PC-12, etc.) • Multi-Engine Turboprops (e.g. Beechcraft King Air 100, Bombardier Dash 8, etc.) • Light Business and Passenger Jets (e.g. Cessna CJ1, Bombardier CRJ, etc.) • Narrowbody Jets (e.g. Boeing 737, Airbus A320, McDonnell Douglas MD-90, etc.) • Widebody Jets (e.g. Boeing 747, Airbus A330, etc.) • Experimental and military types (e.g. Van’s Aircraft RV-8, Mikoyan-Gurevich MIG-15, etc.)
Secondary Services
FLYING THEIR DA 42 TO JAPAN.
Administrative Support When it comes to the paperwork associated with ferrying, ferry flight firms can support the processing (or obtain) the appropriate documentation that ensures the client, the ferry pilot, and the aircraft legally conform. The primary administrative services such firms provide are: Permits - In some cases, an aircraft is non-airworthy for many reasons but is safe to be ferried from its present location to another (e.g. repair facility). In this case, a permit is required. Ferry-flight service providers can obtain authorisation from the appropriate National Airworthiness Authorities before conducting a ‘One Hop’ flight.
Outside of just transporting an aircraft, the ferry-flight service sector also offers additional services to its clients that relate to some aspect or reason for the ferry, e.g. purchasing an aircraft, helping to navigate government registration to the disposition of an airplane. In general, these services can be divided into either technical, administrative, or ferry support.
Aircraft Customs Clearance - With all international travel, “clearing Customs" for both an individual and an aircraft is no different. Many ferry flight firms partner with expert customs agents worldwide to ensure that their clients can get customs clearance support when they import or export any type and category of aircraft.
Technical Support
Registration - Along with supporting a client’s need to inspect and move an aircraft, ferry firms can support the requirement to register the platform. Ferry firms will coordinate with the appropriate National Aviation Authority for a registration certificate.
On the mechanical side of helping clients, the ferry-flight sector can support the many technical needs of taking delivery or moving an aircraft. Many aircraft mechanical unknowns are associated with the reasons for ferrying an aircraft or conducting a ferry that requires special attention, e.g. purchasing a pre-owned, unseen aircraft and ensuring it can conduct an oceanic flight. Here are some of the services which are provided: Ferry Modifications - Sometimes an aircraft can’t meet the demands of an international ferry flight. When this happens, ferry modifications are required to equip an aircraft to meet unique needs for ferrying over long distances or in non-controlled airspace. The types of ferry modifications routinely conducted are installing range-extending fuel tanks, HF radios, and even antiicing fluid delivery systems. Besides installing these systems, ferry-flying services will prepare over-weight certificates, weight and balance certificates, and insurance cover to ensure their clients are compliant.
A unique registration service some ferry firms provide for non-US citizens who want to obtain an American (N) registration for the aircraft (which requires the owner to be a US citizen) is to establish a US Trust. The US trust only fulfills the US citizen’s requirement while the aircraft owner (trustee or beneficiary) takes legal, financial, and operational responsibility from anywhere in the world.
Ferry Support Besides supporting a ferry flight client’s technical and administrative needs, if a customer wants to directly
Pre-buy Aircraft Inspection - An aircraft pre-buy inspection refers to the process by which a qualified entity or inspector examines an aircraft during a potential sale or transaction. During this process, ferryflight service providers (using experienced and certified inspectors) aim to identify any preexisting damage, potential maintenance issues, Airworthiness Directives, and so on to protect the buyer’s interests. Aircraft Acceptance/Demonstration/Test-flights Beyond the pre-buy inspection of an aircraft, it is important to ensure that an aircraft is fully operational and is not going to present any serious maintenance issues after (or even during) the ferry flight. Ferry-flight service providers can conduct maintenance test-flights to determine how the aircraft handles and detect any abnormalities that could only be discovered during a test flight.
WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com
ferry their aircraft versus having a trained ferry pilot take control, many firms will support them in this effort as if the owner was a professional ferry pilot. Here are three types of services you’ll see advertised: Flight Planning - For international flights from any location to any destination, ferry-light firms will provide flight-planning services, plus organise overflight permissions and landing permits, detailed weather briefings, fuel releases, crew hotel and transportation services, and crew visa documentation. Additional services these firms can support or provide an aircraft own are: • Worldwide Charts & Approach Plates • Ground Handling • Electronic Advance Passenger Information System (eAPIS) • Life Raft Rental • Survival Suit Rental • HF Radio Rental & Spot Tracker • Satellite Phone Rental • And much more… Safety Pilot - If an owner requires a co-pilot or extra insurance to ensure the ferry flight proceeds smoothly, ferry-flight firms will provide an experience ferry pilot to assist the client. The safety pilot is not there to hold the owner’s hands but to help if asked. En-Route Flight Instruction – In line with the safety-pilot service, if a client just purchased a new aircraft and wants to leverage the cross-country time to learn more, some ferry firms will dispatch an experienced instructor ferry pilot to highlight the new aircraft’s best piloting techniques, it's handling, and limitations.
Summary As you can see, ferry flying is just not a ‘one-off’ freelance pilot flying an airplane ‘alone and unafraid’ and halfway around the world to his or her final destination, but rather it is a specialised business sector in the aviation and Aerial Work community. This business sector mitigates many of the technical and bureaucratic hurdles associated with transporting an aircraft under its own power. The ferry-flight service sector prides itself on extensive experience in domestic and international aircraft ferry operations. It ferries not only small piston aircraft but jets, turboprops, and aircraft of all sizes and types. Separate from ferrying aircraft, many of the leading firms in this sector also provide services that directly relate to the reason for ferrying an aircraft, e.g. transfer of ownership, positioning of aircraft, or repossession. These services could include anything from pre-purchase inspections, acceptance flights, registration, to routine flight planning and monitoring. Now you know, without committed specialists and firms dedicated to the task of moving aircraft around the world safely and effectively, the aviation community could not function and metaphorically speaking would be ‘”parked in the Hangar” forever.

FERRY FLIGHT Adventures By David Fabry
When asked by GA Buyer Europe to write about ferry flying, I was just about to leave for the USA to ferry back two airplanes we sold to France, so the timing was perfect as I could report “live”!
ARRIVAL IN KEY WEST FOR A $100 LOBSTER ROLL (DAVID FABRY FOURTH FROM LEFT)
Different equipment makes these trips either a routine flight, an experience, or a real adventure. I am right at the junction of what could be considered “an experience” but verging on “adventure” flying, in highperformance single-engine turboprops. It’s a great balance — more comfort and one would lose the excitement of the adventure; while less comfort can be a real challenge, with much less protection offered. Flying at 300 knots in the high twenties or low thirties (thousands of feet), as well as being able to go sightseeing at amazing locations with smaller runways — such as the UNESCOprotected Illulisat in Greenland (or travelling straight from Iceland to Canada if the weather rules out Greenland) — gives you the best of both worlds.
Flying smart Before starting Flying smart (we are the TBM distributor for the UK and Piper dealer for France), I had already done about 40 transatlantic crossings in our own TBM. This provided me with a solid base to plan some more with our clients, not only for their delivery at purchase (like on this occasion) but also during trips we organise for owners.
22 AERIAL WORK EUROPE JUNE 2021
Both cases are very rewarding. A new owner flying his brand new TBM across the Atlantic usually falls in the adventure category for most. Equally, being a group wingman on trips with a handful of high-performance turboprops is something I really enjoy. I can always see the pride, joy and memories these journeys build for the families traveling with us and this is priceless. Besides these enjoyable social times (if you remember what this is!) transatlantic flying is also for me a selfish journey. Ask any ferry pilot if they would rather be alone, and I bet most would agree. In my case, I am generally with at least one to three souls aboard, but I always take a bit of time to myself to reload with the energy and inner peace that remote parts of the world nourish you with. They are very scenic, powerful and serene at the same time and despite multiple trips, I have not grown bored with it. I have actually grown fond of these magical lands (such as Greenland) and their people too. The harshness of the climate (despite its change) still commands a sense of help, care and attention to othes. I have been lucky to fly there with loved ones including both family and friends, and I am hoping in a couple years to fly with my young

daughters. The experience has created a strong impression for all of them. I also have built longlasting friendships with many of the owner-pilots I have flown with along this bonding route.
Added Challenge We are currently faced with extra administrative restrictions and burden to fly these routes due to COVID. This has obviously reduced the number of leisure flights and a sense of being slightly privileged as our line of work is part of the exceptions. However, where possible we still have fun while working! On this current trip, we came to pick up two airplanes: A pre-owned TBM 700 in Connecticut and a brand-new Piper M600SLS in Florida. We flew on the airlines with two crew from Europe to New York, met up with the TBM owner, took delivery of the first aircraft, and then flew down to Florida — which was a good test before crossing. The new Piper owner had flown straight to Miami, so we all enjoyed a night out in Miami Beach and a quick trip to the Keys before the test flight for the M600 the next day. We flew up to Boston for a family dinner and spent the night. The next morning, we made a fuel stop in Goose Bay, and although we had
enough range to reach Iceland we decided to make a stop in Greenland to do some sightseeing before going to Reykjavik, where we had organised a late private dinner at our hotel to meet COVID rules.
With vaccinations well on their way, we hope this summer will allow for our normal activities to resume so we can attend Oshkosh in July with a nice group of owners who will most likely want to catch up on their flying.
After a good night’s sleep, it was a straight flight to Belgium where we cleared Customs and went home. So it had taken two days to go from the USA to Belgium going against the sun — We do the opposite route in a day, leaving Europe in the morning and having dinner in the US.
Feel free to join us and tail winds!
These days, technology has greatly improved the safety and comfort on these trips. Our airplanes are equipped with integrated avionics loaded with features such as autothrottle, autoland, envelope protection, emergency descent mode, weather etc via datalink, and satellite communications. Checking winds aloft, METARs and TAFs at your destination, avoiding convective activity with precision, listening to your favourite music from the comfort of your heated seat, making a quick call to loved ones, or even ordering a delicious Sushi dinner delivery as we did on our leg from Narsarsuaq to Reykjavik, are modern extras that range from niceties to potential life-savers (and sushi does fall in the life-saving category after a long day!)

TWIN OTTER TRIO AT THE AIRBORNE FACTORY
Airborne Technologies Receives EASA Certification for Special Mission Fixed & Rotary-wing Aircraft Austrian company Airborne Technologies (ABT) has gained Maintenance Organisation Approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). “This certification authorises the company to maintain and repair aviation components which are already in service,” reported the company. ABT is already an EASA-approved Design and Production Organisation. As a certified design organisation, ABT can produce client-required or owndesign modifications. In case of minor changes, ABT can certify these modifications itself. As a production organisation the company can produce aircraft components and issue quality certificates for them, it said. The approval “covers all relevant areas such as carbon-fibre composite parts, wiring looms, electronic assemblies, electromechanical components, and metal works and assemblies.” As a maintenance organisation it can service, repair, modify, maintain and upgrade components already in service. The in-house flight-testing department, with EASA-licensed test pilots, “completes the performance spectrum of Airborne Technologies,” noted the company.
applies “especially” to platforms with basic certification to EASA standards and labelled with original EASA type certification. Wolfgang Grumeth, CEO of Airborne Technologies, said: “The demand for extensive and far-reaching modifications to fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters in the so-called ‘Special Mission’ and government sectors is continuously increasing. Several platforms of both categories and from various users have already gone through a sensor upgrade in our halls in Wiener Neustadt, which were expanded to 7,000 square metres in 2016. In addition, aircraft manufacturers are increasingly relying on cooperation with smaller, highly specialised companies such as ABT, whose core competencies and agility fill an important niche.”
POD Example ABT’s SCAR pod illustrates its niche capabilities as no airframe modifications are required to carry these pods, said the company. Aircraft only require underwing hard points, which many aircraft have. If required, hard points can be installed, where aircraft basic design allows.
Valuable Capabilities
Complete sensor suites can be accommodated in SCAR pods, ranging from electro-optical cameras, radar, ViDAR, to electronic warfare equipment, ELINT/SIGINT/COMINT sensors etc. The pod system additionally brings modularity and flexibility to deployment and utilising assets, as aircraft role changes can be facilitated within an hour.
ABT says that it is “a common misbelief that only aircraft manufacturers are allowed to make radical changes to their designs. Nevertheless, ABT is now certified to modify airframes from nose-to-tail without any dependency on manufacturers.
“In this manner aircraft operators are not stuck with committed modified airframes — intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) equipment can quickly be moved to another platform, or a platform can be redeployed or sold,” ABT concluded.
“The benefits to customers are immense when it comes to meeting budgets and schedules, and not having to depend on OEM interest, which can be considerable when dealing with large organisations. Those customers include private companies as well as public authorities, police and military from all over the world.”
EO/IR SCAR-Pod on Viking Twin Otter
Governmental and military aircraft and helicopters are generally not subject to civilian aviation certifications but such organisations “are increasingly considering civil certification as a seal of quality.” This, ABT has observed,
With the comprehensive certifications and the in-house capabilities — from the production of carbon fibre components, via electrical and electromechanical components, up to flight testing — there is “practically no special need, in the field of modification for Special Mission aircraft, that the engineers and designers of Airborne Technologies cannot fulfil.” Airborne Technologies says the client receives competent solutions adapted to current market developments from a single source.

Piper M600/SLS HALO System with Garmin Autoland Achieves EASA Certification Vero Beach, Florida-based light aircraft manufacturer Piper Aircraft has been awarded approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its M600/SLS HALO safety system with Garmin Autoland. “The European certification is a key milestone for the M600/SLS aircraft, which has garnered substantial interest with the Garmin Autoland system. Additionally, the aircraft features competitive range, payload and safety features along with outstanding acquisition and operating economics,” said Ron Gunnarson, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Customer Support. “Our customers are looking for the kind of unique value proposition only available in the M600/SLS as well as the peace mind that comes with HALO and the Garmin Autoland system.”
As the global pandemic begins to subside, Piper Aircraft will launch a robust European M600/SLS demo tour, visiting all Piper dealer partners as well as key markets later this summer.
Autoland. The revolutionary system supports digital technology that safely lands the aircraft at the nearest suitable airport in the event that the pilot is incapacitated.
To date, the M600 SLS has flown more than 100 autoland demos. These demonstrations played a key role in delivering 67 autoland-equipped aircraft in the US market already. The first M600 SLS with HALO Safety System and Garmin Autoland will be officially delivered under European registry in late Q2 of this year, said Garmin.
Additionally, the Garmin G3000 avionics suite includes Auto-throttle, Autoland, Emergency Descent Mode, Electronic Stability and Protection, Surface Watch, Safe Taxi, and Flight Stream 510 all of which are designed to enhance safe operation of the aircraft.
About the Piper M600/SLS The Piper M600/SLS with HALO Safety System is the first general aviation aircraft certified with Garmin
Beyond the flight deck, the six-seat M600/SLS is powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A 600shp engine. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 274 ktas/507 km/h, a max range of 1,658 nm / 2,748 km, and a standard useful load of 2,400 lbs. / 1,089 kg.

Buying Helicopters: Should you go Turbine or Piston? When shopping for a helicopter, should you consider piston or turbine models? Gerrard Cowan asks the experts about the advantages of each…
urbine helicopters dominate the VIP and corporate markets, though there is ongoing demand for piston-driven platforms in tourism, training and a range of other areas. An operator’s choice should ultimately be based on a blend of budget and mission requirements, according to industry experts. Helicopters with turbine engines are generally faster and more powerful than their piston counterparts. Depending on the particular model, turbine-driven platforms can hold anything from four passengers to 15 or more, in the case of a twinturbine helicopter. However, while piston helicopters hold fewer passengers, they’re less expensive to buy and operate. There is a wide range of operators in the pre-owned and new-build sectors across the categories, with a natural degree of overlap between them. Turbine helicopters are performing more strongly in the VIP and corporate markets than in most other helicopter sectors at the moment, notes Jason Kmiecik, president of HeliValue$, a helicopter appraisals specialist. Kmiecik reports that the Bell 505, several variants of the Bell 206, and the Airbus H125 (formerly the AS350) have been popular choices recently for VIP/corporate operators. “It’s still a bad market for a lot of aircraft, but I am starting to see prices climb on some [turbine] models, so that is definitely a plus,” he adds. While there may be a number of reasons for this recent uptick, it could be partly driven by demand from “those wishing to avoid the public airport petri dish” against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, said Brian Foley, Editor, Market Intelligence for AvBuyer. While turbine platforms are more costly to acquire, the aircraft provide increased performance and payload capability, Foley adds. Additionally, small piston aircraft rely on avgas for fuel, as opposed to the jet fuel used by turbine platforms. Avgas is more expensive and less widely available worldwide than jet fuel, he notes.
T
The Corporate Appeal of Turbines
“Turbines are preferred by the corporate community for their performance, reliability and choice of twinengine redundancy,” Foley says. “They handily outsell their piston-powered counterparts in this market.” In the piston helicopter market, the options available to a business or VIP operator are ultimately limited by their speed and useful load, adds Kevin Mawhinney, 40 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE JUNE 2021
“With turbines, you’re talking about expensive aircraft, so you either need to have lots of volume of passengers, or you need someone who can [otherwise] afford the expense of those helicopters...” Helicopter Technical Advisor at JSSI. “These two performance specifications will influence the final selection of a helicopter in this segment. “In fact, much of the same criteria that applies to a fixed-wing business aircraft purchase can be applied to helicopters, too,” he explains. “Buyers want to know how many people it can seat, how far it can fly, and how fast it will go.” Due to the limited useful load and available seating configurations in current production piston helicopters, they can only offer an entry-level business or VIP option, he said. “The shortlist is reduced to nothing if other specific operational requirements are added, such as a twin-engine model or instrument flight rules (IFR).”
It’s a Matter of Cost
Ultimately, the choice comes down to money, says Zac Noble, Director of Maintenance & Technology at Helicopter Association International (HAI). “How much are you willing to spend on what's going to be most cost-effective for your operations?”, he asks. “Helicopters and airplanes are very similar to [other] vehicles – they're very mission-specific. So it depends on how deep your wallet is, and what you're going to do with it.” The reason why piston helicopters are generally used in the training market is because they are significantly cheaper than turbine platforms, Noble says. While each piston helicopter “is still going to cost you $500,000 or more per platform, that’s a lot cheaper than an entrylevel turbine, which is going to set you back close to a million dollars or more”. In addition, insurance will be a major cost factor, he noted. If the hull value of a turbine aircraft is in the $1m$2m range, this will be significantly more expensive to insure than something valued at between $500k and $700k. In functions like training, this relatively low cost can be an asset, Noble argues, as “training aircraft are going to be abused” – they have student pilots flying them and instructors trying to teach. “You don’t want to invest a ton of money.”
The Wider Appeal of Piston Helicopters
However, piston aircraft do have a wide range of applications beyond training, Noble notes, for example in tourism. They also prove useful for some “light-duty” personal transportation in the corporate sector, he adds. “With turbines, you’re talking about expensive aircraft, so you either need to have lots of volume of passengers, or you need someone who can [otherwise] afford the expense of those helicopters,” he explains. Noble says that he personally has flown both types of helicopter, and would not favour one over the other in terms of safety or reliability. “I do know from my own experience that turbinepowered aircraft cost a lot of money, but they generally last a long, long time,” he shares.
Operational Flexibility of Turbine Helicopters
Mawhinney says that turbine helicopters also provide operational flexibility. It could sometimes be as simple as an operator needing to move a relatively large group of people at once, he adds, or a need for retractable landing gear, as is found on larger platforms. Moreover, many individuals and companies prohibit travel in single-engine helicopters, and there could well be further changes to requirements in the future for dual-pilot and IFR operations. “Whichever way that plays out, I do not foresee piston helicopters having any significant role in the VIP market,” Mawhinney argues.
In Summary…
Ultimately, the choice between turbine and piston helicopters must be determined by striking a balance between cost and mission requirements, Foley reiterates. “With a lower cost of acquisition and operation, piston versions are preferred for the owner-flown and price-sensitive markets. “Missions requiring more sophisticated hot/high performance, range and payload would more likely opt for the turbine version,” he concludes. ❙

Leonardo Embraces Kopter’s SH09, Rebrands as AW09

2012 Agusta Westland AW109SP
Italian helicopter manufacturer Leonardo has redesignated the SH09 as the AW09 following its acquisition of the Swiss company in early 2020. It joins a broad family of helicopters covering almost every conceivable size and application. The company reported that the new designation “fully identifies the product as a Leonardo helicopter model while preserving its modern and distinguished features.” “One year after completing the acquisition of the Swiss company Kopter Group AG, Leonardo welcomes the SH09 single-engine helicopter as a full member of its product range by rebranding it as the AW09,” said the parent company, which added that Kopter is “set to become a centre of competence for light helicopters and new rotorcraft technologies.”
Perfect Fit “The AW09 perfectly complements the existing product range of Leonardo, allowing the company to increase its share in the strategic single-engine market, which is one of the largest and most dynamic segments worldwide,” said the company. “Furthermore, the AW09 brings nextgeneration performance and demonstrates Leonardo’s innovation leadership within the industry. This helicopter features the latest safety standards and the most advanced technologies, and this will pave the path for further advancements in vertical flight.” Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, said: “The product with the people and their skills were all important reasons for the acquisition of Kopter. As we make the Kopter team part of our family through the ongoing integration, we now have the latest addition to our product range fully identified with Leonardo, while preserving its invaluable distinguished features. With the AW09, we’re more-than-ever fully committed to pursuing a revolution in the single-engine market and setting an all-new standard.” The AW09 will continue to be developed by Kopter in Switzerland but Leonardo pointed

out that the programme would progress “with the contribution of joint LeonardoKopter teams.” It reiterated that the third prototype (P3), in its new configuration, had logged in excess of 40 flight hours in Switzerland since midJanuary. This includes enhancements in the main rotor head, gearbox, an extended rotor mast and a new design of the flight controls, combined with the modern Garmin G3000H cockpit. “All of this brings even better flight characteristics, performance and ease of maintenance,” said Leonardo. The next AW09 prototype, PS4, is expected to fly this year, followed by PS5.

Light Helicopter Specialist Leonardo said Kopter is set to become a centre of competence for new light helicopters and “an incubator of new technologies for vertical flight. As such, it will contribute to the development of new hybrid and electrical propulsion systems and will play an important role in the framework of Leonardo’s ‘Be Tomorrow 2030’ strategic plan, which aims to put the companies in the leading position on the civil rotorcraft market and modern air mobility.” The single-engine, turbine-powered AW09 offers increased modularity, modern electronic systems, high digitalisation and the largest cabin and cargo hold in its category, claims Kopter. “Outstanding characteristics – including fast cruise speeds and excellent hot-and-high capabilities – are combined with a low noise signature resulting from the newly-developed dynamic assembly and shrouded tail-rotor.”

Bell 505 Cargo Hook Receives EASA Certification Fort Worth, Texas-based aircraft manufacturer Bell Textron revealed in May that its Bell 505 cargo hook has been approved by European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to carry up to 2,000 pounds (907 kg), giving the aircraft an external gross weight capability of 4,475 pounds (2,030 kg). “The cargo hook capabilities are an important enhancement for the aircraft and an added capability for utility and public safety operations,” said Duncan Van De Velde, Managing Director, Europe and Russia. “The Bell 505 is built for versatility and being able to adapt quickly, and the cargo hook will be a great addition for our utility customers in Europe.” In November 2018, Storm Heliworks AB, a helicopter operator based in Sweden, tested the 505 cargo hook while operating in Canada. The company performed a wide range of specialised operations, such as building power lines, clearing trees from power lines, forest inspections, mosquito control, firefighting and other missions. “Our experience with flying the 505 was very positive and proved to be excellent aircraft for our missions,” said Dennis Sundqvist, Deputy Flight Operating Manager, Storm Heliworks. “Cargo hooks are pertinent for our work. The Bell 505 is the strongest helicopter we’ve flown for its size and we’re excited to see this added capability to the aircraft certified.” One of Bell’s North American 505 operators, Rocky Mountain Rotors, utilises its 505 cargo hook for search and rescue (SAR) and utility missions. It is a premier provider of helicopter services in Montana,
Wyoming and Idaho and it detailed its experience with the aircraft. “The Bell 505 is very diversified as far as the missions it can do,” said Mark Taylor, Founder/Co-owner/Chief Pilot of Rocky Mountain Rotors. “There’s been multiple times we’ve had to turn it into a cargo ship versus a passenger ship and most of those times it’s involved search and rescue. The performance of the helicopter is impressive. “There’s a big pricing difference between a 505 and a long light single’s cost of operations,” continued Taylor. “If I need to move more weight, I’m looking at my larger single-engine aircraft, but the 505 is right there as a contender and I can operate for quite a bit less than the other aircraft. Being competitive with an aircraft that’s capable of performing in rugged terrain in Montana, it definitely has helped.” With a speed of 125 knots (232 km/h) and useful load of 1,500 pounds (680 kg), the Bell 505 is designed to be safe and easy to fly while providing significant value to the operator. The customer-driven design of the aircraft places safety, performance and affordability at the forefront, blending proven systems with advanced technology and a sleek, modern design.

WHEN YOU CHOOSE GENUINE LYCOMING PARTS, YOU’RE ABLE TO EXTEND TBO BY 200 HOURS
Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
Our industry-leading cylinder kits go beyond containing the power your engine delivers. From specially treated
barrels to the minerals used in our valves, valve seals and head castings, genuine Lycoming cylinders go above and
beyond industry standards to provide the most demanding operators with exceptional durability and less downtime. It’s our commitment to innovation and quality that gives Lycoming parts—and, thus, Lycoming engines— their
reputation for excellence. Furthermore, when you choose genuine Lycoming parts for your Lycoming engine, you
may qualify for a 200-hour TBO extension. In some cases, up to a 400-hour extension can be approved.
The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.

How Good is Your Product Liability Insurance?
CHECK YOUR INSURANCE ! Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”
ABOUT E&G AVIATION INSURANCE
E&G Aviation Insurance is a leading aviation insurance broker specialising in insurance liability business cover including professional indemnity; cover for buildings including hangars and workshops; and for aircraft whether operating commercially, privately, or for training. It is a trading name of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), Beverley Meads Recreation Ground, Barham Road, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, SW20 0ET UK. For further information please contact
Chris Varley, Director, Export & General Insurance Services Ltd T: +44 (0)20 8255 0617 M: +44 (0) 7973 509961 E: chris.varley@exportandgeneral.co.uk
We rely on many of the components and tools we use in aviation, all the way up to the aircraft themselves, to perform as expected — or advertised. Indeed, in the Products pages of GA Buyer there are all sorts of items for sale from aircraft batteries to hangars, and if you manufacture, sell or repair any of these things you will need Product Liability Insurance. According to Export & General (E&G) Aviation Insurance, while it rare for product issues to lead to a claim it can happen — or manufacturers can be joined into actions where they are partly seen to be at fault. We saw the devastating effect of this with the 737 Max saga following two accidents that sent Boeing reeling, and it was found to have a flight
www.exportandgeneral.co.uk
control system that wasn’t fit for purpose — despite rigorous testing and certification.
While that’s an extreme example, it is a salient lesson that reverberates right down the supply chain. Manufacturers need to protect themselves, and as part of their Duty of Care to end-users they should have proper cover in place. This is where brokers such as E&G Aviation Insurance can help, by finding the best cover for your needs from the insurance market. To discuss further, obtain a quote, or if you are seeking to check the competitiveness (and comprehensiveness) of your current insurance against the market, please contact E&G.
