y first job was with a regional airline that operated a handful of classic Boeing 737s to coastal resorts. I will always remember the feeling of first being told to report to the operation for duty. As a university student, finding a job in Commercial Aviation hadn’t been easy. In fact, that regional airline didn’t have to make a special effort to attract me. With genuine enthusiasm, I was reporting for duty day or night just to have the chance to schedule real airliners alongside a team of real aviation professionals! Sleeping through the morning university lecture following a night-shift wasn’t uncommon. But still my academic results improved. It was a win-win solution. While the remuneration wasn’t bad, that wasn’t the most important aspect of the job. What mattered was that I had begun a career I was passionate about, and started building an impressive CV. It was a few years later with an employer in the Business Aviation industry that I first had a chance to interview prospects for the operations team. Again, we didn’t have to make that much effort to attract the applicants. I observed the same enthusiasm from people who were mad about aviation and looking to break in on a career in aviation. It wasn’t easy to choose just one person.

So, is it still the same today? Certainly not. I’ve heard many recent stories about hiring new staff. The common theme is that the younger generation is proving harder to attract, since they have many options available to them, along with a different set of priorities. Moreover, once they join a company they are quickly seeking to leave for something else. But is it really that difficult to attract, engage, and keep the newer generation? Working with people naturally brings challenges, and people management is a difficult – but crucial – task for every boss. It is mostly the staff that build the company product and reputation, and team spirit that drives a company forward, so retaining them deserves a good portion of our attention. We know that the job expectations of ‘Generation Y’ are high. But this is also a generation that has a lot to offer. With new ideas and a sense for innovation and effectiveness there is definitely a need and a place for them within our industry.

At a time we are hearing much about looming staff shortages it is essential for those leading the industry to understand this new generation and learn how to manage and engage them. We may need to change our expectations from our interviews with them, and instead of looking for the ready-made fit for the team, look to their raw innovation.

“ The common theme is that the younger generation is proving harder to attract, since they have many options available to them, along with a different set of priorities.” It could certainly be said that Generation Y is less patient, seeking faster progress into managerial positions. That means that some within Business Aviation are going to need to become savvy in how they provide opportunity to progress, rewarding innovation brought by this new generation of employees. Business Aviation is certainly an interesting environment, but it’s never without its challenges. And with the challenges the upcoming Generation Z will certainly bring once we’ve got to grips with Generation Y, we’re all going to need to continue to be creative in this industry! T

GREENLAND AIR TROPHY 23 JUNE - 5 JULY 2019

Air Trophy is back! As part of our world series of

STOL competitions in unlikely places, our next,

Greenland, is no exception. With maximum leg

lengths of under 250nm, we will find ourselves flying

through beautiful scenery and into remote strips

across Greenland, Iceland, Canada and the Faroe Islands. This is the trip that every pilot should

experience - but very, very few will.

As the ‘Ryder Cup’ of STOL competitions, the

North American (USA and Canada) and European teams will make their way to Narsarsuaq for the ultimate short takeoff and landing showdown at

the northernmost STOL competition in the world!

This is Prepare2Go’s fourth transatlantic adventure

so we know how to make the journey as easy and enjoyable as possible, which is exactly how it

should be experienced. You will have option of

returning home or continuing onwards from

Narsarsuaq (to Oshkosh if you want), and then

using our ‘Airbridge’ link to return later (either as a group or individually).

Non-STOL aeroplanes (and helicopters and

floatplanes) are also welcome to join the journey! For more information contact Air Trophy Director, Sam Rutherford Email: sam@prepare2go.com or request to join the Facebook group: “Greenland Air Trophy 2019” here you will find many answers and can ask anything you are still unsure about.

We look forward to welcoming you on this adventure 6 PISTON BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2019

UHI has 58 training helicopters and has now “set its sights on the fixed-wing training market,” said founder and CEO, Dr. Gordon A Jiroux. “As we watched the shortage of fixed wing pilots increase and the hiring requirements change, I felt compelled to assist the fixed wing industry as we have done for decades with regards to the helicopter industry.” Universal Fixed Wing (UFW) will be utilising the high-wing P2008 LSA for initial through IFR introduction training, the Garmin G3X two-screen system with Garmin autopilot and Garmin GTN 650. Students will then move to the P2010 4-place single with G1000Nxi and GFC700 for completion of instrument, commercial and flight instructor certificates. Finally, students will fly the P2006T light twin with Garmin G1000Nxi to complete their multi-commercial and multi-instructor certificates. www.universalheli.com

After one year under the new management of the Diamond Aircraft Group, the company is on a very good way to achieve its goal to be the leading company in General Aviation in its class worldwide. After a huge staff increase in 2018, the company now is looking to employ even more people in 2019 as “production is doubling.”

Cessna Incorporates New Cockpit Features Textron Aviation has unveiled enhanced flight deck features for its Cessna and Beechcraft piston aircraft including new standard and optional equipment as part of Garmin’s G1000 NXi next-generation integrated flight deck. New equipment includes the latest Garmin GMA 1360 audio panel with enhanced audio capabilities and Bluetooth audio link to pair portable electronic devices to the flight deck. Other equipment includes the GFC 700 Autopilot with Enhanced Automatic Flight Control System (E-AFCS), now standard on 2019 production Cessna Skylane, Cessna Turbo Stationair HD, Beechcraft Bonanza G36 and Beechcraft Baron G58 pistons, and optional on the Cessna Skyhawk. With E-AFCS, pilots benefit from a lineup of automated features designed to help maintain an optimal flight envelope, while enhancing situational awareness. The added features include Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) with autolevel functionality, Underspeed Protection (USP) and Coupled Go-Around. Factory-new Baron G58 aircraft are also equipped with Garmin’s new GWX 75 Doppler weather radar – turbulence detection and ground suppression technology is optional. Also optional for all Cessna and Beechcraft pistons is Garmin’s GSR 56 Iridium satellite receiver. www.cessna.txtav.com

In late 2017 Wanfeng Aviation Industry Co., Ltd. acquired Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH (DAI Austria), Diamond Aircraft Inc. (DAI Canada) and Austro Engine GmbH (AE). Liqun Zhang, CEO Diamond Aircraft Austria, said: “We do not see the takeover of Diamond just as an investment opportunity. We are here for the long-term and want to grow Diamond on its existing sites.” He added: “Diamond’s headquarters in Wiener Neustadt have been appointed as the global lead and technology centre and are strongly developed further over the coming years. We are ramping up production from 90 units, close to almost 200 units per year, more than double the volume. “In 2018 we have already added more than 100 employees in Austria and we are hiring more people from the local area that are interested in a fascinating position at one of the leading GA manufacturers in its class. We are planning to increase our staff capacity from more than 600 to 800 for 2019 due to high production increase. Especially for our aircraft manufacturing we are urgently searching staff. We also have lots of job opportunities in research and development, sales, and administration.” Also the Canadian branch of Diamond Aircraft, currently employing over 300, is further growing and still searching for more workers, especially skilled trades as business is booming. “We are doubling our production in 2019 to 150 units as global demand is growing,” said Scott McFadzean, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Canada. “After adding more than 100 workers in the past year, we are hiring another 100 people in all departments in 2019 to meet global demand. Our biggest challenge is getting good, skilled people. The labour pool in London, Ontario is pretty shallow right now. We are looking for motivated people in the greater London area that want a unique opportunity to join our world class aircraft manufacturing company.” wwww.diamond-air.at

Iceland Flight Schools Come Together Keilir Aviation Academy has been acquired by Iceland Flight Academy to create a combined school that will operate more than two dozen training aircraft and sophisticated flight simulators in Iceland’s major airports, with a student body of close to 500 pilots. “Keilir Aviation Academy is a relatively young school, although we have grown rapidly over the past few years,” said Runar Arnason of Keilir Aviation Academy. “Our collective background as well as teacher and administrative experience will have a positive impact on pilot training in Iceland.” www.aviationacademy.is

German aircraft manufacturer Flight Design says it is already building its CT aircraft with the increase of the Maximum Takeoff Mass (MTOM) to 600kg, in anticipation of regulations allowing their operation. The change will greatly enhance the capabilities (payload and/or range) of CT aircraft, in line with US LSA operation. “Once the official [EASA] requirements for the conversion from 472.5kg to 600kg are out, the Flight Design conversion program for your airplane will be offered with the lowest effort and reasonable costs possible for you. “The new building code was adopted by the plenary session of the European Parliament on 12th June 2018. As expected, there were no further changes. The next step is for the transport ministers of the EU Member States to approve the text. Publication in the Official Journal will (hopefully) take place this summer. The change involves installation of a Ballistic Recovery System, whole airplane parachute, the BRS 1350, which Flight Design is able to install at Eisenach. Flight Design was recently awarded EASA production organisation approval (POA), following the rescuing of the company by Lift Air of Eisenach, Germany (shareholders being Lindig Group and Aero Jones of Taiwan). The company is now based at Kindel Airport, near Eisenach, where final inspection, test flights and engineering management are performed. Daniel Guenther, Flight Design chief operating officer, said of the new approval, “This is good news for owners of CTLS-ELA aircraft currently operating under EASA’s Permit-to-Fly and for new customers looking for an advanced EASA certified light aircraft. We can now offer owners of CTLSELA aircraft operating across Europe to bring their planes back to Flight Design for upgrading and conformity confirmation to allow them to have a permanent Restricted Flight Certificate (RTC). Flight Design is also taking new orders for CTLSi-ELA aircraft certified to EASA CSLSA. The new CTs are powered by Rotax 912iS engines and have Dynon SkyView HDX avionics. www.flightdesign.com

APPG Reviews 2018, Sets 2019 Goals On 29th January Grant Shapps MP, chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for General Aviation, gave briefed journalists at Westminster. He said 186 MPs and Lords now support the Group, and the aim is to surpass 200. “We are by a long distance the largest APPG and we have a good cross-party mix, remarked Shapps. He added that six working groups had now been set up. Electronic conspicuity equipment for a ‘known aviation environment’ is a key area, he said. Attending the EASA GA conference last year it was clear to Shapps that “EASA is in the right place on this–interoperability while the CAA “is in the wrong place. He welcomed that the new head of the CAA GA Unit, Rachel Gardner-Poole, who will replace Tony Rapson, will report to CAA chief executive, Richard Moriarty. This should also free up progress on establishment of more GPS approaches, with the UK being well behind France, Germany and the US. Shapps said he believed in having one big UK general aviation show, this being AeroExpo (this year taking place at Wycombe/ Booker Airfield, 13-15 June). Finally, Shapps said he believed other European countries should have the equivalent of the APPG for GA, to influence lawmakers. In the U.S. the equivalent is the Congressional Caucus, which is a strong supporter of general aviation. He also said that the UK APPG for GA was now sufficiently established to survive through general elections, as was proved last year, while recognising the need to work with the GAAC as the collective lobbying body for 40 aviation associations. www.generalaviationappg.uk The General Aviation APPG’s Heritage Working Group (Grant Shapps MP is second from right).

Why should I register in the US? • It helps non-US Citizens register with the FAA. • It makes it easy for foreign nationals to make frequent trips to their US homes. • The FAA’s maintenance and registration requirements are favorable for GA aircraft. • It helps publicly traded corporations meet FAA requirements. • It enables foreign businesses to lease planes in the US. • Short-term trusts allow non-US citizens to temporarily register while preparing for deregistration. • Repossessed or stored aircraft can be registered, maintained and remarketed to US buyers. • Foreign manufacturers can register in the US to demo and sell aircraft to US buyers.

Highlights of the 5 Year FAA Reauthorization Act There were several proposals put forward for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Act of 2018 (HR 302), but not all of them made it through. While privatizing air traffic control will not be happening, the rules regarding re-registration have once again been changed. The bill also includes an edict that all documents will be digitized soon, along with opening records electronically to the public for the first time. The 462-page bill passed on October 3rd, 2018 contains many provisions, a few of which we’ve highlighted here. There are changes on the horizon, and while the overall effects are uncertain, we can surmise some of the possibilities.

Re-registration

In years past, registration was only required once per owner of the aircraft. In 2010 that changed in an attempt to make FAA records more current, with re-registration required every 3 years. While this involved more work, the change helped update and maintain more accurate information on aircraft owners. In Section 556 of the 5 Year Reauthorization Act, reregistration is changed to every 7 years, to be enacted within 180 days of the bill passing. We can’t be sure why the FAA is modifying the requirement to less frequent updates once again but are optimistic that the integrity of registration records will not be affected.

Digitization

There are already a lot of FAA documents consistently digitized, making some functions involving registration and record searches more efficient. What isn’t electronically maintained is held in the public documents room at the FAA and available to those who have access to that room. Section 546 of the new bill states that everything will be digitized within the next 3 years, including all registry information such as paper documents, microfilm images and photographs, as well as the registry manual, business operations and functions, and all paper-based processes. It’s certainly an earth-friendly endeavor but could produce some complications of its own regarding access and security.

Public Electronic Database

Possibly the most significant aspect covered in Section 546 of the bill and happening within 3 years is that the FAA records will be made electronically available to the public. For the first time in history, the general public will be able to view any record and file any document they want at the FAA. Furthermore, anyone using the public documents room to perform any acts that could have been done with the same efficiency by electronic means, will be charged a fine. The implications of this switch could be quite far reaching.

The ability to submit documents electronically might make it more appealing for anyone to do individually, but it does not mean they should. While the FAA is opening their records, they are not changing the rules for submitting documents to them. With the extensive rules in place for filing documents, there is a good chance it won’t be done correctly without industry knowledge of FAA rules and regulations for filing of documents. Furthermore, as the registered owner of the aircraft, an owner trustee is going to want to maintain high standards for creating and maintaining the title to the aircraft. They would therefore be filing all documents affecting title in accordance with their own standards. It would likely mean an unrecordable document otherwise. They also know What to Look for in Owner Trustee Documents, and would never rely on documents created or filed by someone else. They would also perform any title searches since an outstanding lien or break in the title can be easily missed without an experienced eye, resulting in the need for Clearing Clouded Aircraft Titles as discussed by Wright Brothers Aircraft Title.

The Owner Trustee’s Role

There are many possibilities for error in the registration process, increasing the amount of time and money spent. It’s complicated and requires experts for error-free and timely filings. There are many Benefits to Registering an Aircraft in Trust since the main role of an owner trustee is to represent the interests of the beneficiary. It is the owner trustee’s responsibility to ensure that all documents filed at the FAA are recorded and kept up-to-date. For an owner trustee then, less frequent re-registration filings do not mean less work since they are regularly in communication with their clients. In sum, the changes coming forward could be both helpful and harmful. We’re hopeful that all will go smoothly for the FAA and progress will continue. The risks involved with registration, title searches and filing documents will not change though, and representation by an experienced owner trustee company is key. One question remaining: what will happen to the public documents room? Will it become a part of a bygone era where people and paper mixed? Special Mission Platform

The Cirrus Perception™

Revolutionising Special Mission Aircraft

Born from a small barn in Baraboo, WI came a company that would revolutionise general aviation aircraft and bring an unparalleled product to the industry. From the beginning, Cirrus Aircraft has been committed to delivering an aviation experience that is the pinnacle of innovation, quality and safety. This vision has led Cirrus to become one of the bestselling aircraft manufacturers in the world. In 2016, Cirrus was able to bring that same approach to special mission aviation.

The Cirrus Perception

TM

At the foundation of Cirrus Aircraft is the motivation and focus to always be looking for ways to improve and enhance the products and services the company provides to its customers. In 2014, Cirrus expanded this vision in announcing a revolutionary, costeffective, dual-use solution for special mission applications - the Cirrus Perception. The design of the Perception focused on missions such as airborne traffic and law enforcement operations, aerial surveying, mapping and photography, search and rescue missions, disaster management and support, border surveillance and many more. In July of 2016, Cirrus achieved FAA type certification for the Cirrus Perception special mission platform and the first aircraft was delivered shortly thereafter to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Cirrus Perception starts with the most sophisticated models of single engine aircraft in the world, the Cirrus SR22 and SR22T, equipped with the Cirrus Perspective+TM by Garmin® flight deck. Operators have the opportunity to tailor the aircraft to host an array of lightweight, compact sensor and user-station options including multi-spectral imaging systems with ultra-long range and electro-optical infrared capabilities. The Cirrus Sensor Mounting System (SMS) can accommodate a wide array of third-party sensors and is designed to be modular, removable and reconfigurable. Cirrus has also partnered with expert third-party companies who deliver comprehensive equipment and payload integration services for Perception customers.

The market introduction of the Perception platform provides special mission operators with the most technologically-advanced and cost-effective aircraft available. Missions that would have formerly needed large, multi-million dollar turbine aircraft or rotorcraft in order to carry dated, heavier technology can now utilise compact, advanced lightweight systems that Cirrus Perception supports. In addition to the special mission features, Perception-tailored aircraft come loaded with all the other benefits that come standard in the SR22 and SR22T airplanes. These features include the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System® (CAPS®), Cirrus Perspective+ flight deck, 210+ knot cruise speeds, Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) capability, a useful load in excess of 1300 pounds,

optional air conditioning, and the widest, most comfortable cabin in its class.

“Special Mission operators are continually looking for ways to improve their mission capabilities while reducing operational costs,” said David Moser, Vice President of Fleet and Special Mission Aircraft Sales at Cirrus Aircraft. “Cirrus Perception delivers on both fronts and sets the new global benchmark as the most capable, flexible and cost-effective ISR platform available today.” As aerial sensor and observation systems are quickly becoming more advanced, as well as lighter, more compact and affordable; missions that previously required heavier, more expensive, platforms can now be flown with the Cirrus SR22 and SR22T. With an innovative sensor mounting system, which is designed to be removed and reconfigured in minutes, operators can reconfigure the aircraft with different sensors or remove them entirely to make a “clean” configuration. It is one aircraft that can fulfill multiple missions. “Cirrus Perception is revolutionary in the special mission market,” continued Moser. “Our customers in military, law enforcement, surveillance, search and rescue, land surveying and more can look forward to the adaptable nature of the PerceptionTM. We are excited to see this new platform utilised across a variety of industries.

TBM Sets Up New Paris Support Base Tarbes-based aircraft manufacturer TBM (part of Daher) has opened a new customer support base at Toussus-le-Noble Airport, some 20km south-west of central Paris. The company said the new location is “strategically situated in a technology cluster zone that has earned the designation as ‘Europe’s Silicon Valley’.” As a subsidiary of the primary TBM Service Center at Daher’s Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport facility, the latest customer support base is Part 145 approved by EASA and the FAA. The station ensures handling and customer care during opening hours of the airport, weekends and holidays included, with a two-hour prior notice. “With more than a dozen civilian TBMs based in the Paris region – plus the French Ministry of Defense’s TBM fleet at the nearby Villacoublay Air Base – it was essential to offer our customers local maintenance services,” said Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice-president of the Daher Airplane Business Unit. Hugo Delpi, manager of the TBM Service Center at Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrenees Airport, also will be responsible for the new Toussus-le-Noble operation. www.tbm.aero

EASA Issues NPR On Runway Safety EASA has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking aimed at mitigating the risks in runway operations, in particular focusing on preventing runway incursions/ excursions, and enhancing monitoring and reporting of runway conditions, pavement maintenance and foreign objects. One aim is to review how vehicles and drivers are managed, with consideration also being given to towing, and direction of pedestrians. It also includes snow control plans, and performance standards for runway surface-friction measurement devices. New ICAO rules are due to be in place on the latter by November 2020. Comments on the NPA are due by 18th March. www.easa.eu

The company also operates an Embraer Legacy 500, the smaller jets allowing it to operate shorter trips while for longer range trips it has a Gulfstream G550 and Bombardier Challenger 605. The Phenom range is around 1,800nm, allowing it to fly routes such as London to Moscow. SaxonAir Charter sales manager Jack Hellewell said the aircraft “strengthens SaxonAir’s European-wide presence significantly.” He added SaxonAir has aircraft based at Stansted, Luton, Farnborough, Norwich, and Cannes in Southern France, flying 3,500 hours annually on missions throughout Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa. www.saxonair.com

The company is expecting court approval for its reorganization plan once creditors agree on terms. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2018 and, according to AINonline.com, the court approved a financing arrangement by Citiking, which is owned by a Chinese national who is looking to relocate manufacturing to China. www.oneaviation.aero

Piper Increases M600 Warranty Hours Piper has increased the warranty hours for the M600 single-engine turboprop from five years/1,000 flight hours to five years and 1,500 flight hours, three years after deliveries began of the aircraft. With 100 now in operation they have been flown more than originally expected, so the change brings the time period and hours limits more into line. The change applies to all M600s produced and was based on customers requesting the change. www.piper.com

Pula Acquires Guernsey’s ASG Pula Aviation has acquired Guernsey based MRO, ground handling and aircraft sales specialist ASG. It is combining ASG with its own aviation company, Centreline AV, to create Pula Aviation Services. Pula says the new entity will “realise synergies and offer a ‘one call’ service.” Together the companies have 100 employees. ASG Group owns approximately 40,000 square feet of aircraft hangarage in Guernsey and supports types including ATR (twin turboprops), Eclipse, Beechcraft, Cirrus, Piper, Cessna, and Commander. Centreline’s CEO Tanya Raynes will become chair of Pula Aviation Services in March, with Steve Page, who has led ASG Ltd since 2014, becoming CEO of the new company, which is headquartered at Pula House, St. Martins, Guernsey. The company was advised on the acquisition and restructure by Guernsey law firm Carey Olsen. Pula Aviation Services becomes a subsidiary of Pula Aviation Ltd, part of the family office of Stephen Lansdown CBE. Pula Aviation was established in 2014 and acquired Bristol-based Centreline AV in 2016, and a 25% stake in Aiglle Flight Support of Guernsey in 2017. www.pasl.aero

NEWS ROUNDUP Whelen Acquires LoPresti Lighting Co. Prop & Wing Boots for General Aviation Aircraft

Smarter. Better Value for your Money

Better.

Whelen Engineering of Chester, Connecticut, has acquired LoPresti Aviation and combined it with its own aviation division to create a new aviation lighting company, Whelen Aerospace Technologies (WAT). LoPresti was founded in Sebastian, Florida in 1991 and has grown to become well known for its aviation lighting and aircraft speed modifications. It holds more than 500 FAA STCs. Founded in 1952, Whelen Engineering designs and manufactures warning lights, white illumination lighting, sirens, controllers, and high-powered warning systems. “WAT enables both companies to combine resources and deliver distinct technologies to the market,” said Whelen president and CEO, George Whelen. “This transaction allows us to...even better serve the industry globally,” he added. www.flywat.com

Dart Adds Bell 505 Float Approval Dart Aerospace has received EASA approval for its emergency float system for the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X. It had already received approvals from Transport Canada, the FAA and Japan’s JCAB. The first system was delivered to the Japanese Coast Guard. Wesley Reid, product strategy and business development manager for Dart, said, “We’re pleased to be given the green light to promote and distribute the EFS in Europe, where there is a consistently high demand for light Bell aircraft.” The EFS, developed jointly with Bell, is available for retrofit or factory installation. It incorporates a six-pod, tri-bag design to allow for enhanced stability without impeding egress. www.dartaerospace.com

ACSS Delivers 10,000th ADS-B Transponder Phoenix, Arizona-based ACSS, a joint venture between L3 and Thales, has delivered the 10,000th example of its ADS-B compliant NXT Mode S transponder. The company says the upcoming ADS-B mandate has led to a “surge in orders.” The 5,000th unit was delivered in March 2018 with it entering production in 2014. “The industry has worked hard to put plans in place to meet the upcoming FAA and EASA deadlines,” said Terry Flaishans, president of ACSS. “There is a number of smaller carriers and business jet organisations that still need to complete the necessary planning. We strongly recommend that they conclude this.” www.acss.com

NEWS ROUNDUP Garmin Releases Software Update 6.51 Alsim Celebrates Bumper 2018 French simulator manufacturer Alsim sold a record number of simulators last year, in excess of 40. Examples were Egnatia Aviation of Greece (6); Aeropyrenees, Astonfly and Trimaille Aero Formation in France; Super T Aviation and Montair (Canada); and Tayside Aviation (Scotland). In addition, the first Alsim AL172 model 2 was delivered, installed and certified in early 2018 to Banyuwangi Pilot School in Indonesia. This was followed by AL172 orders Cirrus Aviation and Paragon Flight Training, Liberty University in Florida, USA. Lent State University in Ohio, USA also purchased two AL172s and two AL250s for its new FedEx-supported College of Aeronautics and Engineering Academic Center, scheduled for completion in July 2019. Alsim also won a tender with five AL172 sold to CAFUC (Civil Aviation Flight University of China). Alsim devices are now being operated in more than 50 countries, said the company. “With this exponential growth, we are redesigning our infrastructure to ensure our current and future customers are well taken care of and to ensure our innovation continues. We hired more than a dozen staff in 2018 in all departments across France, China, and the United States. We have acquired extra space near our headquarters in France. We also announced future production plans in the USA to help support and grow the Americas market, said the company, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2019. www.alsim.com

Garmin says its new version 6.51 software for GTN 650/750 navigators has received an FAA STC for light helicopters, following last year’s approval of version 6.51 for FAA and EASA certified installations in aeroplanes. EASA approval for helicopters is still pending.

Le Loroux Bottereau, France-based simulator manufacturer Alsim has achieved another FSTD sale, to Aeroclub di Verona, a long-term Alsim user. The club has been operating an Alsim AL200 for more than 15 years together with one of our customers in the region. After attending a demonstration of the Alsim ALX in Nantes, the company decided to purchase an ALX for its new MCC and APS MCC training courses. The device is designed and approved for ATPL, CPL/ MCC and JOC. Marino Palla, head of training at Aeroclub di Verona, said: “With almost 100 years of history and experience we are one of the oldest flight schools in Italy...to provide up-to-date and top-notch training we chose the Alsim ALX.” “Together with our joint venture company Flysim, we will offer IR, multi-engine, JOC and MCC training through our knowledgeable team of flight instructors in our unique facilities, located in the northeast of Italy. We also look forward to welcoming other flight schools in the area to train their students using our simulator.” Nicolas de Lassus, Alsim sales account manager, added: “We would like to welcome Aeroclub di Verona into the Alsim family. This is the seventh ALX customer in Italy. Aeroclub di Verona’s facilities are located at the foot of the Alps, near Lake Garda and very close to the Adriatic sea and Venice. The club also helps disabled people to learn to fly through the “Ali per Tutti” organisation, whihch was founded by one of the aeroclub’s flight instructors. https://www.aeroclubverona.it 36 PRODUCTS AND SERVICES BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2019

Alsim Sells FSTD to Aeroclub di Verona

Version 6.51 brings a host of new features and fixes to the GTN such as terrain alerting, data logging, visual approaches and Enhanced VNAV. Data-logging records GPS position, course deflection and attitude (if available) for use in replaying the flight on the fly.garmin website. Alternatively, the information can be exported to other third party apps such as CloudAhoy. Visual approaches guidance provides a cheap and cheerful straight-in approach to a runway end including vertical guidance. “While the software does consult the terrain database in constructing the approach, the intent for the tool is to help find the correct runway end under visual conditions,” said Garmin. “Think hazy days at an airport with runways ends closely aligned, not a DIY instrument approach to every runway.” Meanwhile Enhanced VNAV allows the pilot to fly a vertical path, with multiple crossing restrictions along the way, making descent planning a simple matter. Enhanced VNAV requires baro-corrected altitude input to the GTN, which in most cases means the GTN has to be connected to a compatible PFD to get the most out of this feature. www.garmin.com

Nationwide, DRF uses helicopters at 29 air rescue stations in Germany and at two stations in Austria for rapid emergency rescue and for urgent transport of intensive care patients between clinics. Every year, it provides around 38,000 missions.

“When AERO Friedrichshafen started the e-Flight-Expo in 2009 it was the world first show for electrical Aircraft. For the upcoming 2019 jubilee edition, the e-flight-expo will focus on innovations, recruitment and creating social acceptance. People say time flies. With electric propulsion, time seems flying even faster. This year will be the 10th e-flight-expo. When the e-flight-expo was founded, at the AERO Expo in 2009 by AERO and Flying Pages GmbH, it was the world’s first and only trade show dedicated to electric aviation. “Our commercial performance in 2018 demonstrates the resilience we have developed as a company to help us navigate what remains a challenging environment,” said Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even. He also noted that the company had increased its share of the military market in 2018 with orders for H225s and NH90s, including two large orders from Qatar and Spain for the latter for a combined 51 helicopters. “These positive trends give us the means to prepare the future and continue our transformation,” Even said. Meanwhile Airbus Helicopters and Helisim (an Airbus joint venture with Thales) have started to build a $40 million helicopter training centre in Grand Prairie, Texas. It will include a Thales Reality H level-D full-motion flight simulators for the Airbus H145 and H175; simulators for the H125/ AS350; and an H135/H145 training device. www.airbus.com/helicopters Krystian Pracz. “The location of Bautzen also benefits from the fact that we are highly specialised in the requirements of night-time rescue operations.” The non-profit organisation developed special procedures for approaching locations at night years ago. The concept includes the use of two IFR pilots, a digital map satellite navigation system, compliance with specific approach profiles, the use of night vision goggles (NVGs) and instrument-equipped helicopters with high performance headlamps. Their nightly usage profile ranges from the islands of the North Sea to the mountain ranges of the Alps. In DRB the DRF Luftrettung is starting operations with a red and white Airbus H145 rescue helicopter. It also has a permanently installed rescue winch. www.drf-luftrettung.de “think about electric airplane back then, if not too lunatic. “Since then, smart phones, 4G & 5G network, consumer drones, electric cars, auto drive, air quality, extreme weather and connected mobility solutions have become prevailing commercial products and social subjects around the world. Propelled by these technologies and the associated changing mindset of the market and the society, electric aviation has been evolving from ‘impossible’ into ‘inevitable.’ As a good indicator of the market trend, e-flight-expo has become larger and large in scale within the last years and introduced the world’s first e-flight-show at AERO 2017.” The 10th e-flight-expo will be held from April 10 to 13 at AERO in Friedrichshafen, Germany. “It will be a good opportunity to celebrate what have been archived in electric aviation in the past decade and to look into the future. We are making great efforts to organise a historical event with the largest ever electric aviation expo in terms of numbers and diversity. Looking forward to seeing you on the banks of Lake Constance,” added the AERO organisers. www.aero-expo.com

The companies will work together to integrate Honeywell avionics, navigation, flight control systems connectivity, and other beneficial products and services onto a future Pipistrel vertical takeoff and landing air vehicle. “This is the beginning of a long-term relationship to collectively pursue the future of urban air mobility,” said Ivo Boscarol, founder and president of Pipistrel, which is one of Uber’s vehicle development partners for urban mobility solutions. Pipistrel was first to fly an electric twoseater in 2007 and first-to-fly an electric four-seat airplane which went on to win the NASA Green Flight Challenge in 2011. The Pipistrel Vertical Solutions team has designed eight different electric aircraft since 2007 and have developed aircraft propulsion systems for NASA and Siemens’s aircraft. The company is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2019 and has introduced new corporate branding to mark the occasion. Introducing the new look, Boscarol remarked: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is Pipistrel’s new look: Yes, the bat is here, sharper and better!” www.pipistrel.si

Boeing Flies eVTOL

Boeing has flown a prototype of its unmanned passenger air vehicle (PAV), which complements its autonomous all-electric cargo air vehicle (CAV), which is designed to transport up to 500 pounds (227 kg) within a radius of up to 20 miles. The PAV has a range of up to 50 miles (80 km). “In one year, we have progressed from a conceptual design to a flying prototype,” said Boeing chief technology officer, Greg Hyslop. The flight, which took place in Manassas, Virginia, tested the autonomous functions and ground control systems of the air-taxi concept demonstrator. Upcoming flights will test forward, wing-borne flight, as well as the transition phase between vertical and forwardflight modes. Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences assisted with the development of the electric VTOL aircraft, which is now part of Boeing NeXt ( launched at the Farnborough Airshow last year). www.boeing.com/NeXt

“We are excited to see our industry demonstrating the viability of sustainable alternative jet fuel at general aviation airports for business aviation users,” said General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) president and CEO, Pete Bunce. “This event will help raise awareness of the safety and accessibility of the fuel, and demonstrate our industry’s commitment to building the necessary demand for SAJF that will be integral to achieving industry climate emissions goals.” NATA president Gary Dempsey said, “Van Nuys Airport was the perfect backdrop for today’s activities… We look forward to continuing to spread the message of the impact and benefits of SAJF throughout the industry and across the world.” The day-long series of events included demonstration flights conducted by business aircraft, establishing Van Nuys as the first GA airport in the U.S. to offer SAJF on a trial basis, and served as a model for offering the fuels at other airports. “As one of the world’s busiest general aviation airports – with 231,000 annual operations supporting diverse private, business and government aviation needs – Van Nuys Airport is committed to leading the way in environmental sustainability,”

said Van Nuys Airport Association (VNAA) president, Curt Castagna. The trial flights, which were first announced at the European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE) in 2018, are an extension of the SAJF initiative, reflecting the industry’s long-standing commitment to emissions reduction, including, among other aims, carbon neutrality from 2020. International Business Aviation Council (IBAC) director general Kurt Edwards said, “SAJF represents a critical measure to help meet the sector’s global commitment to halve carbon emissions by 2050 relative to 2005 levels. “I am proud to say, on behalf of the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), that we fully endorse this initiative and appreciate all of the coalition’s efforts and are looking forward to continuing this momentum on the European continent,” said Athar Husain Khan, secretary general of EBAA The main industrial participants are Avfuel, Bombardier, Gevo, World Energy, and World Fuel. “SAJF will enable a future of clean, efficient propulsion in business aviation: their advantages are real and current – we can benefit from the regular use of SAJF not just in our lifetime, but immediately, starting today,” said David Coleal, president, Bombardier Business Aircraft and Chair of GAMA’s Environment Committee. futureofsustainablefuel.com

How to Choose the Right Corporate Helicopter

What are the key considerations when buying a corporate helicopter? Aircraft broker Michael Roberts offers insights and tips to help

ensure the rotorcraft you buy is the best fit for your mission needs. The corporate helicopter market could certainly be larger than it currently is. There are companies and individuals whose time and travel needs could be met by helicopters, but who are not currently utilizing rotorcraft. Those choosing the right corporate helicopter, however, enjoy a truly competitive advantage and enhanced travel safety. The best helicopter is ultimately the one which you will use. It may sound overly simple, but this idea will ultimately assist those seeking to buy a helicopter in their selection of the right make and model, down to the selection of which serial number to purchase. In many cases, there will be several different models which could work almost equally well for corporate missions, and in these cases other factors come in to the selection process.

Mission Suitability

The first question is ‘mission suitability’. To determine the mission suitability of a model, buyers need to create a list of role-suitable helicopter models they’re considering. For example, are you an organization which doesn’t allow its executives to travel in single-engine aircraft? Does the corporation have policies ruling out operations over certain areas or restricting night operations? Irrespective of the merits of many turbine helicopters, if company policy prohibits single-engine aircraft or certain types of operations, your selection of models will be reduced to twinengine helicopters, or those performing within the confines of that policy. After determining which of the remaining models meet the published range and payload you require, it’s worth asking pilots rated in the models you’re considering to run flight plans over an anticipated route you plan to fly on a typically hot summer’s day, with the typical number of passengers you would anticipate transporting. Pay attention to the time of flight and fuel used as part of your consideration. It pays to repeat this process as many times as necessary to confirm that the helicopter make/model is suitable for your mission need. Having visited helicopter operators in over 40 countries, you’d be surprised at the number of times I’ve heard of somebody buying something that ‘can't take off’. 50 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2019

Parts, Mechanics and Pilot Availability

The next major factor in choosing your model is the availability of parts, rated mechanics and the pilots you plan to use. Do not assume a helicopter does or doesn’t have parts available based on model year alone. All the major OEMs work diligently to have worldwide availability of parts, but things do happen, and supplier issues or a sudden demand for a part can result in a (mostly temporary) shortage. The best way to obtain this kind of data is to visit the maintenance facility you’re consider using. While you’re there, ask if they are consistently able to complete work on time, keeping down-time to a minimum. After all, when things go wrong it is not unheard of for a helicopter to be grounded for a six-month period. Be diligent and current in your research. While it is tempting to simply list and recommend certain models, the models that work best for your needs absolutely depend on the location of the intended base of your operations. Do you have pilot(s) on staff who are already trained in the model you’re considering? Or do you intend to send them to flight school? Are you planning to use local contract pilots on an as-needed basis? You will need to know who’s going to fly your machine. Many clients have long term professional pilots on their staff whose requirements are a critical part of their selection process.

What’s Your Budget?

Narrowing down the right tool for the job will reveal the price it will take to acquire one of the helicopters on your list. While many people begin with a price range and select helicopters that fit that range, it’s worth doing things the other way around first to see if the process reveals another model(s). Remember, the best helicopter is the one that you will use. A bargain-basement machine that’s stuck in the hangar for any reason is no bargain at all!

Personal Considerations

Don't forget the personal and non-financial considerations. Comfort and

appearance are driving factors in many areas of business and should not be overlooked here. If you find the right machine with the wrong colors, ask about seat cover changes, stripes or paint jobs as a part of your overall consideration. On the flip side, don't buy the wrong helicopter because it looks great… Awesome-looking ‘hangar queens’ will do nothing to meet your mission need if they don’t fit the bill, regardless of how impressive they look in the hangar.

Communicate to your team, pilot, broker and potential service providers special considerations which may have an impact on your choice. For example: • Will the helicopter be shipped or flown to another region or country? • What are the seasonal changes like in the places you plan to operate? • Will it be based on a yacht, at a private residence, private airfield, at a standard FBO, or at a private hangar? • Do you need to rent or charter? • Will the helicopter fly only as corporate transportation, or for other uses too?

DirtyDozen March19.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 08/02/2019 14:49 Page 1

Part 1

Pilot Error: Getting to Know the ‘Dirty Dozen’ Simon Newbold highlights the problem of human error in the aviation world, referencing the well-known ‘Dirty Dozen’ causal factors. Picture the scene: It is early evening on a glorious summer’s day; the sun is still shining, and the sky is a deep blue without a single cloud in the sky. Heathrow Airport is a complete buzz of activity with aeroplanes everywhere as 1000s of travellers are moved in and out of the bustling hub. I am on duty. My job is as an Airfield Operations officer is to patrol the vast wild expanse of the miles of concrete in my shiny yellow vehicle ensuring the safety of the Aerodrome.

The shades get repositioned, ear protection is on and with my trusty bats the arms start to swing and flow and swing and flow like they’ve never swung before. Up and down, up and down, the rhythm is poetry. A little bit left, a little bit right and the mighty beast creeps onwards towards me following every single flick of my wrist. I can hear the applause, I can hear the cheers, I feel 1,000 eyes following my every move just in complete awe of my show. I’m a hero! My arms continue to wave almost sucking, beckoning the 400 tonnes of aircraft. It’s vital the wings do not hit anything, it’s crucial the plane is stopped in the correct position.

I have a smile on my face as I love my job working at the real front line, diving on and off the capacity constrained runways carrying out vital surface checks, keeping that constant eye out for an opportunity to move birds away from danger and armed with my marshalling bats, ready to ensure the safe arrival of that aeroplane at the terminal building.

The safety of the 500 people on board and the airlines pride is all down to me and my fingers. On we go, I’m not tired, I’m in my element, up and down, up and down on we go.

The shades are on, the arm gently resting – elbow pointing outwards of the window. The tan is coming along nicely as I cruise the manor, eyes scanning all around and the ear glued to the radio waiting to respond or react to anything that I can do to ensure all is well.

It’s all happening like a dream, not far to go now, come on, come on, left a little more, straight on, straight on, now right a touch, come on, up and down, up and down, that’s it – just right, up and down, up and down then all of sudden the cheers turn silent, as all of a sudden the show goes horribly wrong.

Suddenly I hear that call. What’s that? A plane needs help... a plane cannot park using the guidance system. I hear the message from the mighty control tower “Any Leader vehicles available?” I grab the microphone. “Heathrow Ground Leader 7, I’m on my way.”

The show turns to a disaster. I hear a huge gasp all around as the performance of a lifetime becomes a disaster. As I stepped backwards beckoning the plane onto to its final position, I hadn’t seen the chocks.

I arrive at the aircraft parking stand to find a 747 with its mighty engines turning and burning, the heat haze causing a mirage of sea behind but sat patiently waiting in a stationary position. All around the docking spot is an army of vehicles filled with ready and eager workers.

Those chocks that shouldn’t have been there. Those chocks that were in the wrong place. Those chocks that If I had only glanced behind me rather than showing off, those chocks, those silly bits of rubber, what happened?

I glance at the window of the terminal where there is a team of airline staff standing, twitching in anticipation. The dispatcher is perched in the mouth of the airbridge – the audience is set, this is now my stage.

As I swung, as I smiled, as I winked, as I walked backwards, suddenly bats and shades fly in all directions, legs in air, backside on ground as I collapse into a heap on the floor. Looking out of the corner of the bruised eye, what do I see? Palms clasped tightly over eyes, groans all around and I’m not sure but way up high in the cockpit – I’m sure I can see laughter.

I hastily drive onto the stand, a swift handbrake turn, the door swings open and out I step ready for the performance of my life. Help! Help! I hear the cry. I drop half of my sunglasses to one side and with I wink and a smile, I shout: “Do not worry, I am here…”

Hastily I gather the bats, not the shades they are smashed to pieces. No longer is the full swing of the arms in motion. It’s a quick wave, a cross of the bats – job done and let’s get out of here. I limp back to the sanctuary of my yellow vehicle number 7 and disappear as quickly and as quietly as I could.

Awareness of Human Factors in Aviation

Have a look at the picture below and decide

An understanding of human factors in aviation is crucial to the safe and efficient contribution of a human in the work place. There have been many studies, scientific theories, books and training material about the subject that are either directly scribed for aviation or as a general topic.

if the face is looking at you, or to the right?

When writing these words, I thought that I would try to keep it very high level, light and simple. I could just leave this with the opening story as it is self-explanatory, but I’ll write on. The piece is not designed to try and educate, but just perhaps to stimulate some thought. By thinking, maybe a situation that may have occurred due a failure can be averted. This perhaps is because of improved awareness, or maybe something as simple as a trigger that reflects to these words.

What are Human Factors in Safety?

To start with the high level, the subject of human factors is quite simply the study of behaviours and actions that make it easier to understand the ability to undertake a task. It applies everywhere where humans work or play. It has also been described as the study of all the factors that make it easier and safer to do the work in the right way.

Have a look at the picture below and ask yourself

are the lines crooked or straight? It is of course arguable

Over the years some studies have also looked at the design and process implementation as a root cause that then has either led to a human behaviour, influenced it, or has directly created the end situation. In the perfect world the design and the human interaction along with interpretation should be in a place where everything is done in the right way and decreases the likelihood of an error occurring.

that these are well designed optical illusions and have been cleverly created to in fact mean that straight or right, crooked or straight they are the same.

There is always opportunity to introduce design improvements in the work place and the equipment should be matched to fit all human capabilities. The study of this subject always has acknowledged the underlying fact of the universal nature of human fallibility and that errors will occur. The study of human factors is based on how we think and what actions we take. These thoughts of course stem from that mass in our heads called the brain. How the brain is working, and processing is the sole reason for our actions. The brain is of course extremely powerful, it is very flexible, and it is particularly excellent at finding shortcuts quickly. It is very good at filtering all that information being fed into it and then great at making sense of things. Sometimes, however, our brain is just too clever for us, and mistakes will occur.

The Trickery of the Brain

Our brain unfortunately has a down side and often when errors occur it will be the brain’s fault, rather than being down to a design fault. Sometimes what you see is not obvious or maybe is totally different to what someone else sees. Sometimes the brain will play a trick on you to alter or change what you see. This can be a direct reason for an error, a mis-judgement, however severe the consequence is.

Introducing the Dirty Dozen

It must be assumed and recognised that mistakes will always happen and sometimes they are basic. Unfortunately, they will OFTEN also have severe outcomes. We have already touched on the brain and it is therefore understood that very intelligent people who are very experienced, and fully motivated and being very careful, will still make a mistake. How many aircraft incidents have been attributed to pilot error? Why would a pilot make a mistake? What is an error or a mistake? There are several ideas or the dictionary definition, but I prefer to think along the lines of the failure of a planned action to achieve its intended outcome. Or a deviation between what was done and what should have been done, doing the wrong thing when meaning to do the right thing. Although I promised to avoid some of the scientific references one previous study that is high level enough and I believe is very valid is Gordon Dupont’s Dirty Dozen.

Norms

Following several incidents in Canadian aviation, he published a list of 12 causal factors in 1993, which has come to be known as Dupont’s Dirty Dozen. It is not a comprehensive list of human error accident precursors, for example, ICAO Circular 240-AN/144 lists over 300 human error precursors. However, since 1993 all areas of the aviation industry have found the Dirty Dozen a useful introduction to open discussions into human error in their businesses, organisations and workplaces. While the list has increased awareness of how humans can contribute towards accidents and incidents, the aim of the concept was to focus attention and resources towards reducing and capturing human error. Therefore, over the next few months, we will offer examples of typical countermeasures designed to reduce the possibility of any pilot error, based on the Dirty Dozen. I’m sure you will find many recognisable elements.

Simon Newbold, an airfield operations consultant, began his career at then BAA Heathrow in September 1990. During his time spent there, he worked in a variety of front line operational and managerial roles before spending four years as an Airfield Planning Manager, before returning to the front-line operation as a supervisor. Dedication to the role and his knowledge meant that he was in demand to lead on training for all new starter and existing staff. His work soon expanded to a wider audience, and even saw him co-chair a special interest group feeding into the Aviation Industry Skills Board. Simon’s passion and knowledge for all things in the operation and the airports’ history has seen him train over 100 staff. After 27 and a half years Simon left Heathrow in February 2018 to take on a new challenge working for the high-profile Airport Management Consultancy firm APMC.
