– Established 1957 –
Pooleys is a family owned and operated business, founded in the UK by Robert Pooley on leaving the Royal Air Force in 1957. For seven decades, Pooleys Flight Equipment has been a highly respected name in the Aviation Industry as a leading manufacturer of Flight Equipment and publisher of Aviation and Flight Training materials. During that time, we have expanded our product range and our geographical reach. Our products are sold through flight training organisation and our network of loyal dealers across EMEA and beyond. We continue to manufacture, at our factory in the UK, the worlds largest range of pilot’s kneeboards, flightboards and flight computers and we now stock over 2800 different products from many of the worlds most recognisable aviation brands. In the last 3 years, we have invested heavily in our systems, processes and infrastructure. Indeed, we have completely refurbished our offices, factory and warehouse. This included doubling our factory and warehouse area at our Cranfield site and purchasing new manufacturing equipment. In addition, now that the UK has left the EU, we are investing in a Pooleys branch within the single market to continue to offer our European partners frictionless trade. We believe that excellent customer service lies at the heart of our business as well as a passion for aviation that underlines everything that we do. Since we opened our first pilot shop at Elstree Aerodrome in 1961, we have sought to provide the best face to face service in the industry, whether that be at one of our 4 Pilot Shops in the UK or at one of the 17 exhibitions we would normally attend across EMEA each year or indeed when we are out on the road visiting flying schools and dealers. Our success is not just down to our dedicated, knowledgeable and loyal team but also to our customers - pilots, schools, dealers and enthusiasts. Much of what you see in Pooleys today is due to the passion and commitment of many people from around the world within our aviation community. It is that community which Pooleys has always sought to try and support. We want to give a little something back and to open up aviation to those who in their normal lives would not have access to the world of flight or who do not have the means to make their dreams of becoming a pilot a reality. Each year, Pooleys donates product and some of the proceeds from our sales to aviation charities and community interest groups. Since we set up our promotional code scheme over a decade ago, we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for charities and have been delighted to see the incredible results they have achieved. If you are interested in finding out some more about the charities we support and the amazing work they do, please use the QR code at the bottom of this page. Perhaps you can find a way to support them too…
YOUTH & EDUCATION SUPPORT
We all recognise that these are challenging times in aviation, for us and for our customers. It is therefore important for me to thank you all for your loyalty and support. It means a great deal to me and to the Pooleys Team.
Sebastian Pooley Managing Director March 2021

Pandemic Could Accelerate Rise in On-Demand Aviation ne quarter fewer business jet sectors were flown in 2020 compared to 2019. In any other year that would represent a devastating repudiation. But in 2020 the erosion in private jet sectors was barely half that seen in scheduled airline traffic.
O
In Europe, passenger airline arrivals have fallen 70% since the pandemic, whilst General Aviation was down by just over 20% for the full year. And, while airline activity saw only a feeble improvement as lockdowns were alleviated in the summer, the relaxation of travel restrictions saw an immediate surge in Business Aviation activity. August leisure travel in Europe actually exceeded flight demand in August 2019. The initial impact of the spring 2020 lockdown was on the supply of aviation services, not the demand. But as the first virus wave passed, pent-up demand for flights resurged, with declines in year-on-year business jet activity narrowing from 70% in April to 15% in July. As airlines struggled to reactivate fleets, the share of all fixed-wing flight activity operated by business jets and turboprops climbed from scarcely 10% in 2019 to more than 30%. The US trailed the initial recovery curve seen in Europe, but from mid-Summer business jet demand came surging back for the Public Holidays. The resilience in Business Aviation clearly owes to its on-demand utility. Only a relatively small proportion of the operational fleet has been taken out of service, allowing operators to respond quickly to the first signs of recovery. This is essential in a world where the scope for travel has been dramatically redefined in the shortterm, and by consumer and business demand for the longer-term. Corporate travel has been grounded, at least across the mass market of middle-tier management. Conversely, leisure travel is pent-up, and through 2020 manifested in unprecedented demand for flights to remote getaway locations.
Negative Optics Offset in 2020? Following the 2008/09 recession, the biggest constraint on business jets has been optics; the toxic image of conspicuous consumption allied to a growing concern for the environment. Those negative issues haven’t gone away, but there’s been a positive offset in 2020, and on-demand aircraft have been used on a huge range of medical,
humanitarian, government, and business-critical missions. Hygiene concerns on traditional mass-transit transportation has brought new users to Business Aviation, and the negative connotation of flying private could get repositioned as a responsible way to move executives. Besides health concerns, the key driver for Business Aviation’s resilience is connectivity. Business Aviation has historically provided more connectivity than the airline network, with three times more unique airport pairs in Europe, and ten times the number in the US. And, since the pandemic, as airline networks have recoiled, the ondemand reach of Business Aviation has only increased.
The Lasting Shift? While the shift in route preferences may only be shortterm, reverting to more familiar networks as the corporate market recovers, other changes could prove more permanent. For example, the crisis has likely increased the user market’s preference for charter services, proliferating across card, membership, and traditional ad hoc demand. Meanwhile, digital platforms are providing market transparency, taking business jet services into the mainstream. Lifestyle service providers will look to integrate business jet connections into their wider package of services, and we should see an acceleration of market consolidation (possibly with a ‘Premier League’ of international operators resembling airlines in terms of fleet size, but comprehensively organised around on-demand passenger services. The acquisition of Mountain Air by Wheels Up is a case in point).
Looking Ahead in 2021… The winter virus waves are likely to maintain significant travel restrictions through spring in the key European and US business markets, suppressing any recovery in scheduled airlines. But Business Aviation should prove resilient, especially around leisure destinations. Even as the world reopens for business in the second half of 2021, a large chunk of business travellers will stay home, and airline networks will be commensurately eroded, meaning that over the year, Business Aviation has an historic opportunity as executives, business owners and entrepreneurs get back on the road. ❙

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.

Trustflight Explains the Many Advantages of Electronic Tech Logs If you’ve ever glanced into the cockpit before or after a flight, there’s a good chance you’ll have seen one of the flight crew filling out a thick binder of paper forms. These forms make up what’s often referred to as the aircraft technical log, journey jog or, just the aircraft logbook. The digitisation of this paper-based process provides many benefits to operators including cost reduction, delay reduction, and the opportunity for greater analytics surrounding aircraft operational performance and reliability. This article will explore how electronic tech logs can achieve this and what steps operators should take to maximise the benefits.
What is an Aircraft Technical Log? The aircraft technical log (‘tech log’) is a process used to record and document the airworthiness status of the aircraft. Principally, the tech log will consist of a form completed on each flight or trip and supporting documentation on maintenance procedures and any deferred defect or damage on the aircraft. The form is used to record aircraft utilisation information such as flight times and cycles, alongside information on when the next scheduled maintenance is due, details of any open or deferred defects, and details of the last maintenance release. The tech log is regulated for European operators under EASA Part-M/PartCAMO regulations, but in other jurisdictions operators will often carry out a variation of a similar process. In some cases, these processes may be referred to as the journey log or aircraft logbook. The forms filled out in the tech log are usually completed on carbonized paper to retain a copy on the aircraft and distribute the others to ground handling agents and the operator’s maintenance management team. As a paper process, this has its challenges, primarily: the risk of induced errors; the time required to process the paperwork; and the delays in the availability of information. Errors in the paperwork are a common occurrence arising in 30-50 percent of all tech log entries, and these can cause significant risks to operators. Firstly, as the hours and cycles recorded are used to determine when to carry out maintenance, a deviation either way from the correct value can either lead to a shortened, and therefore more expensive, maintenance interval, or the risk of missing a maintenance task and generating safety implications. Additionally, on many aircraft under hourly maintenance programmes, the cost of misrepresented aircraft hours can add up quickly. Availability of data also causes challenges for operators. With a paper
16 PRODUCTS AND SERVICES BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2021
process, it can take days for details of a defect or a deferred item on an aircraft to be processed, and this can lead to reduced timescales to source parts and the risk of an aircraft left AOG. Recent changes introduced due to Covid-19, such as remote working, have also created challenges in managing a physical paper process which requires the handling of original copies of paperwork and manual entry into maintenance systems.
TrustFlight’s Tech Log An electronic tech log, as the name suggests, is an electronic equivalent of the paper tech log process. Electronic tech logs come in many different guises from basic forms through to more sophisticated digital workflow applications such as TrustFlight’s Tech Log. These allow operators to not only replace the paper system, but also leverage all of the benefits from a digital platform. TrustFlight’s Tech Log is the leading system for business aircraft operators and provides a simple and intuitive app that can be installed on an operator’s existing iPad EFB device. This iPad app provides flight crew and engineers with a workflow-based approach to completing the tech log, with pre-filled data where available, and validation on any entries by the user. This is a different approach to many other systems which take the existing tech log form and just create a digital copy of it on a tablet. In addition to the iPad app, TrustFlight’s system includes a complete management dashboard which allows the operator to view real-time information on their fleet status, open defects as well as managing integrations with popular systems in use throughout the industry such as CAMP.
Tech Log Benefits The primary reason operators adopt an electronic tech log is to save cost. This is initially gained through time savings from pilots creating the logs, and technical records clerks who must check and enter the logs into various maintenance tracking and scheduling systems. With the electronic system, initial entry is quick and data is automatically imported into the various third-party systems. In total, this can save approximately 40 hours of work per aircraft per month. This 40-hour saving greatly reduces the cost of processing tech logs. However, the hidden costs of inaccuracies can be much larger. As an example, a large business aircraft operator found they were overreporting utilisation on one of their aircraft by over 20 hours a year, amounting to an extra $20,000 unnecessarily spent in maintenance programme payments.

When it comes to managing defects on an aircraft, speed and access to up-to-date information are key. This is an area where the electronic tech log shines as defects can easily be entered in the system at which point all required personnel are notified in real-time, and work can be started to resolve the items — even if the aircraft is in the air. Additionally, being able to rapidly defer items on an aircraft in a quick and compliant manner can help significantly with reducing delays. TrustFlight’s Tech Log includes a complete digital MEL (Minimum Equipment List), which highlights relevant items and guides the user through all the requirements for deferral — an area operators commonly struggle to comply with. Finally, one further benefit of an electronic tech log is with the right system, data can be recorded to a much higher quality and with better compliance compared to a paper equivalent. This allows more detailed analytics to be conducted on the aircraft to identify trends on defect reports or items such as delay factors. Also, when it comes to selling an aircraft, being able to instantly provide a complete history of logs will prevent any risk of delays in transactions or difficulties when it comes to financing the asset.
How to get Started Moving to an electronic tech log can be easier than you may think. TrustFlight’s system is unique in that it can export the identical paperwork that an operator may already have, thereby reducing the amount of training and process changes required. Additionally, it is recognised by EASA and meets all major regulatory requirements worldwide, allowing for easy acceptance by the relevant authorities. The system integrates with many of the common maintenance tracking and scheduling systems in use today, so with a short period of running the electronic tech log alongside the existing paper process, an operator can switch over to the TrustFlight system and see benefits in a matter of weeks. TrustFlight currently has multiple major business aircraft charter operators using the system within Europe, North America and the Middle East, including Flexjet and TAG Aviation.

BUYING AN AIRCRAFT SHOULD BE TURBULENCE-FREE
Give us plenty of time to get you a Better Insurance Quote According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) Insurance, businesses are rarely proactive in looking early for better insurance premiums, which can contribute significantly to wider cost-cutting measures. “Whether you need insurance for your aircraft, hangar-keeper’s liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance, speaking to us early, perhaps a couple of months before the renewal date, can mean significant savings,” says Varley, who adds “We’re happy to remind you so feel free to let us know your current renewal dates.”

Garmin GI 275 EFI Approved by EASA Lookalike touchscreens allow owners to “modernise thousands of ageing cockpits,” says Garmin. Garmin has announced that its GI 275 electronic flight instrument has received European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval, allowing installation in over 1,000 single-engine and multi-engine aircraft models. The company says several variants of the GI 275 are available, to meet the needs of business and general aviation aircraft. “A powerful electronic flight instrument, the GI 275 is suitable as a direct replacement for a variety of legacy primary flight instruments in the cockpit — such as the attitude indicator, attitude-direction indicator (ADI), course deviation indicator (CDI), horizontal situation indicator (HSI), multi-function display (MFD), and engine indication system (EIS),” it adds. “In addition, the GI 275 can also be installed as a standby attitude indicator when paired with large format electronic flight displays.” Carl Wolf, Garmin vice-president of aviation sales and marketing, commented: “Garmin worked closely with EASA to bring the GI 275 to thousands more cockpits with ageing flight instruments. With this approval, the modern GI 275 electronic flight instrument gives pilots the opportunity to take an economical and scalable approach to their avionics upgrade while realizing tremendous potential with the extraordinary capability of the versatile touchscreen GI 275.” Lightweight and compact, Garmin says the GI 275 is a reliable flight instrument intentionally designed to take advantage of the common 3.125-inch flight instrument size, reducing installation time and preserving the existing aircraft panel. “Its bright, high-resolution touchscreen display and wide viewing angle offers superior readability in the cockpit. A dual concentric knob allows pilots to access a variety of key functions within the flight instrument, such as adjustments to the baro setting or the airspeed bug. Aircraft owners can start with a single GI 275 and add up to a total of six in a single panel, paving the way for incremental upgrades and an array of individualised panel configurations,” concludes the US company.
Primary and Standby AI When installed as a primary attitude indicator (AI), the GI 275 offers improved reliability, potential weight savings and reduced maintenance compared to less reliable, vacuum-driven attitude indicators. When the GI 275 serves as primary for attitude information, pilots can also view altitude, airspeed and heading on the instrument. Optional Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT) overlays “a rich, 3D topographic view of terrain, traffic, obstacles, airport signposts and more.” Additional features include the display of outside air temperature, groundspeed, as well as true airspeed and wind information on the attitude indicator. The GI 275 flight instrument is also approved for installation as a dedicated standby flight instrument to Garmin glass flight displays and is capable of serving as a backup to a variety of third-party flight displays on the market. When installed as a standby flight instrument to the G500 TXi, the GI 275 is capable of displaying additional multifunction display features. In installations where the GI 275 is installed as a primary or standby flight instrument, a 60-minute back-up battery is included.
CDI / HSI When installed as a Course Deviation Indicator (CDI) and Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) the GI 275 is designed to accept a variety of GPS and navigation inputs, allowing up to two GPS sources and two VHF navigation sources. The GI 275 features an Omni Bearing Resolver that allows the flight instrument to interface to a variety of legacy navigators on the market without the need for an expensive adapter. With an optional magnetometer, it is also capable of providing magnetic-based HSI guidance. Selecting the CDI source is simple and can be accomplished through the touchscreen interface, while course and heading selection is completed using either the touchscreen or dual concentric knob. When aircraft owners replace an older mechanical CDI or HSI, the GI 275 doubles as a modern digital indicator and adds MFD-like capabilities such as a moving map, weather, traffic and terrain.
Autopilot Compatibility A single GI 275 electronic flight instrument can be used as the attitude source to drive the GFC 500 autopilot, while also displaying mode annunciations and flight director indications. For added redundancy in aircraft equipped with a dual GI 275 installation, the secondary GI 275 is capable of coupling to the GFC 500 autopilot, as well. In the unlikely event of a primary GI 275 failure, the autopilot remains fully functional when paired with the secondary GI 275. Additional redundancy is extended to include the G500 TXi & G600 TXi flight displays, which also allow the GI 275 to couple to the GFC 500 autopilot if needed when serving as a standby instrument. Unique to the GI 275 and TXi, pilots will receive a mis-compare annunciation if the AHRS sources between the two do not align. GI 275 is also compatible with the GFC 600 digital autopilot, as well as a variety of third-party autopilots and does not require a separate interface adapter, “further reducing overall cost and installation labour,” claims Garmin. “The GI 275 can replace the primary attitude indicator installed with these autopilots.”

Daher Approves MecanAir Service Centre for TBMs
Héli-Béarn Becomes First French Customer For Daher’s Kodiak 100 The delivery of a Kodiak 100 to Héli-Béarn in late January made it the first French customer for the utility aircraft member of Daher’s single-engine turboprop-powered airplane product line.
Already an authorised service centre for Kodiak aircraft, Switzerland’s MecanAir has now also been designated as a TBM service centre. The move “underscores Daher’s integration of these two airplanes in the company’s single-engine turboprop product line,” said the French manufacturer. Daher announced last month that it had appointed Switzerland’s MecanAir SA as an authorised service centre for both the TBM and Kodiak singleengine turboprops. Based at Ecuvillens Airport near Fribourg, MecanAir is an EASA Part 145 certificated maintenance and repair station. It was already operating as an authorised Kodiak service centre. MecanAir is specialised in the maintenance and repair of aircraft weighing under 12,500 lbs, as well as the overhaul of turboprop engines and accessories. In addition to its Ecuvillens Airport location, the company has maintenance workshops at the Swiss airports of Yverdon-les-Bains and Grenchen. Under the expanded agreement with Daher’s Aircraft Division, MecanAir is now capable of handling all scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance services for Kodiak and TBM aircraft, and airworthiness-related control/management under the authorisation as a Continuous Airworthiness Management Organisation (CAMO).
“With MecanAir’s dual Kodiak and TBM authorisation today – to be followed by other service centres in the future – customers will benefit from more comprehensive coverage and the increased synergy of our network worldwide," added Chabbert. Raphaël Maître, Vice President of Customer Support for Daher’s Aircraft Division, added: “As a key member of services for the Kodiak aircraft family for ten years, MecanAir distinguished itself as an extremely capable support partner. Our Kodiak Care team, led by Dave Schuck, has been very pleased with MecanAir’s responsiveness at its own facilities, as well as the response to off-site maintenance calls. The next step was extending MecanAir’s capability to the TBM.” MecanAir founding-CEO Michel Devaud is a well-known professional who developed a range of auto racing engines in the Can-Am and F5000 series for teams that included McLaren and Lola during the 1970s.
Global Support Network
As an active private pilot, Devaud has built his own aircraft, and he set up an aviation engine overhaul operation.
“This is another important step in enhancing our global network after Daher’s acquisition of Kodiak in 2019,” explained Nicolas Chabbert, the Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division, and CEO of Kodiak Aircraft.
In 1976, Devaud created MecanAir as an aircraft maintenance and engine overhaul facility specialised in light aircraft – as well as for such legendary airplanes as the Tiger Moth, Bucker, Spitfire, AT-6 and Wildcat.

The Kodiak handover to Héli-Béarn, from left to right: Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division, and CEO of Kodiak Aircraft; Héli-Béarn CEO Jean-Luc Dartiailh; and Hugo Delpi, Daher Aircraft Sales Director for Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
Among the Kodiak 100’s duties for HéliBéarn – which is based at Pau-Pyrénées Airport in southwestern France – will be skydiving operations, said Daher. “In the skydiving configuration, the aircraft is equipped with a sliding door and accommodates up to 15 skydivers. Benefitting from its rapid climb capability of 9 min. 30 sec. to an altitude of 12,000 ft. (3,600 metres), the Kodiak 100 can perform an average of four rotations per hour for the deployment of parachutists,” it continued. “The Kodiak’s introduction in France marks another expansion of the global customer base for this highly capable airplane,” stated Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher’s Aircraft Division, and CEO of Kodiak Aircraft. Héli-Béarn CEO Jean-Luc Dartiailh said his company evaluated the Kodiak 100 in operational conditions and was rapidly convinced that it is the ideal aircraft – especially for skydiving flights. “It is modern, safe, easy to maintain and
efficient,” he added. “With an operating cost 25 percent lower than aircraft currently in service, the Kodiak is the ideal solution to take over from an aging fleet of skydiving platforms.” As the safest aircraft in its class, the Kodiak 100 is rugged, reliable and modern – featuring STOL (short takeoff and landing) performance. It is produced in the United States at Sandpoint, Idaho. Daher acquired the business in 2019 — adding the Kodiak to its product line of TBM “very fast” single turboprop-powered aircraft. “As an aerial services provider, we were interested in the Kodiak as soon as we learned that Daher had purchased the company,” Dartiailh added. Héli-Béarn was founded in 1996 and is focused on transportation and aerial work with both fixed-wing airplanes and helicopters, while also providing aviation maintenance, training and consulting services. Included in its airplane fleet is a Daher-built TBM 700 aircraft.

How do Multi-Mission Aircraft become Mission Capable? Suppose you ever thought about how specialised equipment and systems are integrated into Multi-Mission Aircraft. In that case, Patrick Ryan walks you through the ‘Turn-Key’ world of what makes a GA or Transport aircraft a Multi-Mission Aircraft. Introduction In my previous article, ‘What Makes A Multi-Mission Aircraft Mission Capable?’, I looked at the type of kit and systems used or considered across the MultiMission spectrum (commercial, public safety, and defense) that make the airframe mission capable. This included what are the primary considerations when it comes to selecting the right specialised mission hardware and software. The last article's logical follow-on is how does all this kit and systems find its way on-board. Here, we will concentrate on what is aircraft modifications and alterations and the ‘Nuts & Bolts’ of converting a basic airframe into an Aerial Work capable platform.
What is Aircraft Integration, Alteration & Modification? From a broad view, aircraft integration, alteration, and modifications change a baseline aircraft's physical characteristics. It is accomplished by changing the original aircraft production specifications by altering items already integrated or incorporating new components/capabilities to an established platform.
In Particular, modifications to an aircraft come in two forms: those that add new equipment or features to the aircraft (referred to as alterations or modifications) and those accomplished to re-establish the aircraft's original strength and integrity of damaged areas (referred to as repairs). For this article, we'll focus on the first form (integration, alterations & modifications) regarding who modifies these aircraft, the types of technical disciplines required to make it happen, and the standard types of modifications you'll see performed on Multi-Mission aircraft.
Who modifies and integrates Multi-Mission aircraft? In the world of aviation and aerospace, there are ‘Makers’, and then there are ‘Modifiers’, or sometimes they're ‘Both’. In general, the ‘Makers’ are those who design and manufacture the original aircraft or specialised system & component, i.e., referred to as Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). An illustration of these types of Multi-Mission OEMs and ODMs and their products are:
• • • • • • • • •
Cessna Aircraft Company – Single-engine C-172, single-engine C-208 Caravan Daher Kodiak – Twin-engine Kodiak Series II Vulcanair – Twin-engine P68 Observer 2, twin-engine A-Viator Diamond Aircraft Industry – Single-engine DA-20 Katana, twin-engine DA-42 Twin Star Tecnam Aircraft – Twin-engine P2012 SMP, singleengine P2010 Textron / Beechcraft – Twin-engine King Air 360 Cirrus Aircraft – Single-engine SR20 and SR22 Britten Norman – Twin-engine Islander and Defender 4000 and many more
The ‘Modifiers’ are those organizations or companies that modify, alter, or integrate aircraft into specialpurpose platforms. These firms are usually certified Maintenance and Repair Organisations (MRO), Design Organisations, or Production Organisations with a business model of providing ‘Turn-Key’ multi-mission modification solutions. For instance, converting a DC10 into an Aerial Firefighting ´Water Bomber`, outfitting an Airbus EC-135 into a Medevac platform, etc. The type of Modifiers ranges from Tier-1 large

corporations to Tier-3 small firms. As an example, here are a few of the companies that focus on providing ‘Turn-Key’ Multi-Mission aircraft solutions: • BAE Systems - United Kingdom • Airborne Technologies GmbH - Austria • Nova Systems Europe - United Kingdom • Field Aviation - Canada/USA • and many more
What is the ‘Nuts & Bolts’ of aircraft integration & modification? Looking under the cowling of the Aerial Work MultiMission aircraft integration and modification sector, the ‘Nuts & Bolts’ or functions of physically altering or modifying an aircraft consist of several technical disciplines. The overall or standard services and efforts Modifiers provide range from defining requirements to troubleshooting already fielded Multi-Mission technical aircraft systems. However, the specific or compartmentalised functions or services modifiers provide are: Programme Management This function or service consists of conducting analysis, managing the development of requirements, tracking milestones, and overseeing an aircraft's modification life cycle progression. This effort could include everything from determining the design specification, logistics, document development, and supporting the required work certification. Engineering Engineering involves structural, avionic, and system engineering at every stage of the integration process. Specifically, engineers, technologists, designers/ draftspersons, and technical specialists are engaged with specifying, modeling, assembling, testing, and certifying all aspects of an aircraft modification from a design perspective. Manufacturing - Fabrication Because some multi-mission requirements are unique, some modifications and alterations require a One-Off or distinctive component or part made from scratch, i.e., based on original designs or reversed engineered. The manufacturing or fabrication function or service consists of converting raw material into a finished product like a composite Radar dome (manufacturing) or combining typically standardised parts by bending, drilling, and connecting into a completed unit like a special utility cargo hatch or remote-sensor equipment rack (fabrication). Installation Once the planning, engineering, and parts are ready, installing everything involves adapting or making ready to use the specialised multi-mission component. The process could be as easy as plugging in a part (‘Plug & Play’) to significantly modifying or altering the original aircraft interior and exterior design and function. Flight Testing When everything is complete, it's time to see if the installation and modification work. Flight testing is at the core of what Modifiers must do to validate a modified aircraft's operation and performance and evaluate new and modified aircraft systems' functionality during flight. This event allows identifying and fixing any design problems, plus verifying and documenting the vehicle capabilities for airworthiness certification and customer acceptance. Other ‘Nuts & Bolts’ In addition to program management, engineering, manufacturing-fabrication, installation, and flight testing, there are other notable services or functions Modifiers might provide: • Kit manufacturing – This service consists of designing unique parts or components for a customer. These components are then

•
manufactured or fabricated, packaged as installation kits, and delivered directly to the customer. Documentation – Pertaining to required regulatory documentation associated with any modification or installation, certified Modifiers will produce mandated documents that pertain to flight, maintenance, and service operations associated with any alteration or change, e.g., Supplemental Type Certificate (STC), Instructions for Continued Airworthiness (ICA), and more. Training – Depending on the modification or installation, training might be required for both the aircraft maintenance personnel and the flight crew to correctly maintain and operate the new systems and components. Many Modifiers provide such training services as part of the overall installation contract.
What are the different types of Multi-Mission Aircraft Integration & Modifications? When it comes to types of aircraft integration, alteration, and modification efforts, the answer is — almost anything that you want to add, change, or integrate into an aircraft that is airworthy at the end of the process. However, regarding Aerial Work aviation and Multi-Mission aircraft, there are common types of integration and modification efforts regularly accomplished to change a GA or Transport aircraft into a Multi-Mission platform. In general, the kinds of integration and modification projects can range from integrating high-end specialised multi-million dollar Intelligence, Reconnaissance and Surveillance (ISR) systems, Medevac equipment to a simple, inexpensive Aerial Advertisement banner towing hook. However, the typical type of work Modifiers are asked to accomplish in the Multi-Mission aircraft sector are: • Avionics modernisation & standardisation upgrades - ADS-B, RVSM required systems, etc. • Aircraft modifications to increase utility - Range extension, Hush-Kits, aerodynamic enhancements, specialised utility doors, etc. • Aerial Surveying and Mapping sensor installations - Digital mapping cameras, LiDAR sensors, airborne GPS, inertial measurement systems, sensor access hatches or ports, etc. • Aeromedical installations and palletisation –
•
• • •
•
Specialised patient stretchers, medical equipment, rescue host, etc. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems installations – EO/IR gimbals, sensor extension/retraction lifts, mission management systems, data links, electronic warfare measures, and countermeasures systems, etc. Aerial Firefighting capabilities installations Retardant Aerial Delivery Systems, rotor-wing water bucket sling configurations, etc. High-speed data link integration – Simplex, HalfDuplex, and Full-Duplex communication systems. Police Aviation capabilities integration – Augmented Reality Mission Management systems, searchlights, Tactical Flight Officer workstations, etc. General interior modifications and reconfiguration – Optimised aircrew seating/operator positions, specialised equipment racks, dedicated storage compartments, etc.
Summary Without a doubt, the Aerial Work aviation sector could not do its job if it were not for the ‘Makers’ and ´Modifiers` of the aviation world. Because 90% of all aircraft are not built explicitly for every type of MultiMission operation, the Modifiers of the world are critical in turning a GA or transport (and sometimes an old warbird) aircraft into a viable, effective, and safe platform. Because Aerial Work aviation has a critical role in both aviation and society, the current and future need to modify, upgrade, and maintain Multi-Mission aircraft will continue. Even in COVID-19, many firms have full work-order books and forecast many more projects will come. Again, a Multi-Mission aircraft is not special because of what systems and components it flies with, but more importantly, how they are technically integrated, certified, and maintained to support their specific Aerial Work mission. Next time you observe a Police helicopter, Aerial Fire Fighting ‘Water Bomber’, or even an Aerial Mapping drone, think of those companies, engineers, and technicians who have ‘The Right Stuff’ to turn a basic aircraft into a workhorse for both the aviation sector and humanity to benefit. Kopter Flies SH09 After Major Retrofit
The SH09 third prototype (P3) recently took off at Mollis, Switzerland, following a major modification. This was part of the planned product development roadmap, towards the final Type Certificate configuration. The modification programme was successfully implemented thanks to the joint efforts of the teams from Kopter and Italian parent company Leonardo. It includes a new main rotor head design; a new main gearbox with an extended mast; and new flight controls configuration. Another significant change is the installation of the a Garmin G3000H integrated flight deck, “flown for the first time on a helicopter,” said Kopter. The expected improvement of P3 handling qualities and stability were immediately apparent to the crew, reported the company. “During the first flight it was possible to complete a set of low-speed envelope manoeuvres up to 35 knots, including forward, rearward and sideward flights as well as spot turns.” Subsequently, several flights have taken place and the crew has been able to expand the flight envelope to climbs, descents, autorotation and turns up to 5000ft. Richard Grant, Kopter Chief Test Pilot, commented: “The overall helicopter response to control inputs has been improved. All manoeuvres could be performed accurately with deliberate and precise inputs.” The Garmin G3000H performed “as expected, thus confirming the importance
of anticipating its integration in the P3 configuration to fully develop its potential and benefits in the next generation SH09 helicopter.” Michele Riccobono, Kopter CTO and Head of Flight Operations, stated: “The results of these first flights with this new configuration are the evidence of the Kopter engineering capability to accurately predict the helicopter behaviour and successfully drive the design towards the required performance improvements”. The flight test programme is now continuing with the expansion of the weight, speed and altitude envelopes while assessing the new flight deck avionics suite.

Bell Delivers First Bell 505 NXi to Europe Textron celebrates EASA certification and delivery of first Bell 505 NXi in Europe. US helicopter manufacture Bell Textron has delivered the first EASA-certified Bell 505 NXi to a corporate customer in Europe. The delivery was made at the Bell Textron facility in Prague. “We are proud to now offer the Bell 505 NXi to our European customers,” said Duncan Van De Velde, Managing Director, Bell Europe and Russia. “With receiving EASA certification at the end of 2020, every new Bell 505 comes standard with the Garmin G1000 NXi integrated avionics suite. According to Bell the new upgraded avionics provide “workload reduction, situational awareness with faster processing power, and crisper displays to aid pilots with flight, aircraft, traffic and terrain information in an easy-toread format.” “With the latest Garmin avionics and dual-channel FADEC-controlled engine, the Bell 505 NXi is the most advanced short light single aircraft on the market,” added Bell.
Some of the aircraft offerings include: • Dual-core processors to reduce boot time by more than 50%. • LED backlit and improved displays that increase resolution and brightness. • Easy LRU replacement via automatically loaded software recognition. • VFR/IFR charts available via the multifunction display (MFD). • Enhanced Horizontal Situation Indicator (HIS) with map, traffic and terrain overlays. • Optional wireless datalink allowing for easy flight-plan and database uploads via a compatible mobile device. There are nearly 300 Bell 505s operating in more than 55 countries across six continents, this fleet having now surpassed 50,000 total flight hours. “The aircraft is designed to deliver an easy, efficient flight experience while offering significant value to para-public, helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) and private operators,” concluded Bell.

Garmin Receives EASA Certification for Helicopter Touch Displays Garmin’s latest G500H TXi electronic flight display systems, clean-sheet touchscreen designs with dual-core processing power, have received further approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for normal-category VFR helicopters. This follows FAA approval last year, and now includes the Airbus Helicopters EC 120B, AS350B and the AS350BA models. Garmin’s latest G500H TXi electronic flight display systems, clean-sheet touchscreen designs with dual-core processing power, have received further approval from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for normal-category VFR helicopters. This follows FAA approval last year, and now includes the Airbus Helicopters EC 120B, AS350B and the AS350BA models. The systems build on the “proven capabilities” of the original G500H glass flight display series to offer “a vastly expanded array of features, options and panel layout possibilities,” said Garmin. “G500H TXi makes it easy to configure a robust glasscockpit solution that fits your mission today and can grow with your needs for the future,” added the company.
Flexible Configuration Options Bright LCD touchscreen displays, available in 7” or 10.6” formats, offer a variety of installation configurations to fit the available panel space and budget. The 10.6” horizontal format can accommodate Primary Flight Display (PFD) information and a Multifunction Display (MFD) side by side within the same unit. Meanwhile, the 7” portrait format displays can be individually dedicated to PFD (with HSI map) or MFD functions. Another option, where panel space is limited, allows the 7” landscape format display to serve as a dedicated PFD with instrument tapes, a half-arc HSI (without the HSI map) and optional HSVT 3-D synthetic vision. In configuring the system, “you can mix and match up to two of the high-resolution touchscreen displays in your cockpit,” said Garmin.
Helicopter-specific Mission Readiness In addition to the already extensive databases found in its fixed-wing counterpart, every G500H TXi system uses a helicopter-specific obstacles database featuring more than 200,000 additional low-altitude obstacles. To support night operations, each display is optionally available with NVG compatibility. And for increased operational capability, the system also supports multiple video input options that enable the MFD to serve as a FLIR or live-cam video monitor.
Virtual 3-D Visibility When darkness, fog, rain, haze, blowing dust, swirling snow or inadvertent flight into IFR conditions keep you from seeing the “big picture” clearly, the safety enhancing HSVT synthetic vision technology “can make a world of difference,” claims Garmin. This optional capability helps minimise visual impairment by providing a virtual-reality landscape on the flight display, showing a database-generated view of ground and water features, airports, obstacles, traffic and more. “The HSVT depictions look so real it’s like having a clear-day out-the-window view of your flight situation,” said the company.
Forward-looking Terrain Awareness G500H TXi supports high-resolution, five-colour HTAWS when it’s paired with an HTAWS-equipped GTN or GNS series navigator. HTAWS offers forward-looking avoidance capability to predict in advance where potential hazards may exist and help maintain safe separation from nearby terrain, towers or obstacles. Accompanying voice alerts also indicate the relative threat level, with messages such as “Caution, Obstacle, Obstacle” or “Warning, Terrain, Terrain” — as well as keeping the pilot apprised of his or her aircraft’s height above ground when descending below 500 feet. If the mission requires routine operation in close proximity to known terrain or obstacles, the pilot-selectable Reduced Protection (RP) mode allows the pilot to minimise alerting interruptions. Plus, for even more terrain awareness, a GRA 55 radar altimeter can be added to display the AGL on the G500H TXi display.
High-level Avionics Integration G500H TXi was designed to interface with a wide range of avionics equipment, including Garmin’s digital GFC 600H helicopter flight control system. The GFC 600H provides a more stable flight platform that helps to significantly reduce pilot workload, fatigue and stress levels in busy “hands-full” situations. Pilots can use the G500H TXi touchscreens for control/display of heading, course and navigation source inputs as well as mode annunciations and more (with compatible inputs). The G500H TXi also offers integration capability with GTN series navigators, providing full touchscreen continuity between the navigation, communication and flight display functions in the panel.
Add Weather, Traffic and Other Options For added capability, G500H TXi integrates with a variety of optional sensors and datalinks to support the latest in weather and traffic monitoring. For example, Garmin’s Doppler-capable GWX 70H onboard colour radar with optional turbulence detection and ground-clutter suppression capabilities. The company’s GSR 56 datalink can provide weather data and radar imagery via the Iridium global satellite network. G500H TXi also integrates with certain TAS or TCAS systems, including Garmin’s GTS series.
Easy Installation With installation approval available on many popular helicopter models, equipping the cockpit with G500H TXi is a straightforward proposition, says Garmin, which also provides a two-year warranty (and optional FlightLevel Select Extended Warranty). “See your aircraft manufacturer or authorised Garmin installation centre to get on board with a G500H TXi installation or upgrade for your helicopter,” concluded the company.
