BRISTELL: Profile of a Manufacturing Phenomenon Since 2009, they have together produced more than 650 machines that fly around the world. With 110 employees, BRM Aero now releases four machines per week. In the catalogue you will find the XL 8, fixed-gear or retractable gear, which is very well known in the ULM world and which also exists in a classic-gear version. But also there is the B8, a two-seater high-wing aircraft which is finishing its flight tests.
A year ago, the Czech manufacturer Bristell BRM Aero promised it would, by the beginning of 2022, certify (under the CS-23 standard) its B23 aircraft equipped with the Rotax 915 engine. And it kept its word! The B23 912 was already a favourite in several respects: manufacturing quality, ergonomics, piloting...and with the Rotax 915 it also obtains that of performance. Milan and Martin Bristela, father and son, founders and managers of the BRM Aero company, held an event at the Courchevel Altiport in the French Alps to present their newly certified aircraft: the B23 915. They chose a demanding environment to assess their machine in all conditions, and it also represented a beautiful setting to photograph the aircraft.
Kunovice: Cradle of Czech Innovation This CS-23 certified aircraft comes to us from Kunovice (LKKU) in the Czech Republic. Kunovice is not a field like most others. It is one of the cradles of the Czech aeronautical history, a nest where thousands of planes were born. Geographically located in the south-east of the Czech Republic, not far from the town of Zlin, the Slovak and Austrian border, it is here, around runway 02/20, that several companies are located, including the oldest, LET Kunovice. Among the aircraft produced at the airport since 1935 are the Aero 45, L-29 Delfin, LET C-11 a licensed Yak 11, LET 200 and its variants, the famous LET 410 and LET 610. This was a company that employed 5,500 people until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
LEFT TO RIGHT: MARTIN BRISTELA, EMMANUEL LAURENT, (FRENCH BRISTELL DISTRIBUTOR) AND MILAN BRISTELA.
A Family Story BRM Aero is the most modern company on the field. It has 10,000m2 of new buildings and a large hangar, built in 2019. The masters of the place are a father and his son, Milan and Martin Bristela. Milan, 63 years old and the CEO, is a discrete aeronautical engineer with an impressive CV, a true living bible with whom we spend hours discussing with passion. “The teacher” would be a nickname that suited him well. After studying engineering specialising in aeronautical development and production at the Military University of Brno at the end of the 1970s, he worked as a fatigue analysis specialist at LET alongside some of the greatest aeronautical engineers of the time. In disagreement with the catastrophic management of his partner, he separated and two years later founded his own company with his son Martin: BRM Aero.
B23: Drawing on Heritage The B23 is inspired by the NG5 (XL8), but they nevertheless have several differences. The B23 912 is 150 kg lighter and the 915 155 kg lighter. The spar and the wing are reinforced and there is a difference of one metre in wingspan. The B23 has many qualities — “the general line is beautiful, harmonious, balanced. It’s a nice little plane,” says the company. The structure is classic riveted aluminium, “a wellmastered and robust technique”. The B23 has 1,700 parts produced at the factory, and requires 4,800 rivets. The rivet-head holes are filled with a syringe with resin for sealing. The low wings can be removed quickly by releasing the four-point attachment, making it easy to put the aircraft in a container for transportation. The flight controls are rigid, with connecting rods “guaranteeing precision piloting and harmonious controls.” The tricyle landing gear consists of two composite half blades (for the main landing gear), designed for 850 kg, and a nosewheel based on a teleflex system. The only composite parts are the propeller spinner, the fairings at the wing root, the canopy support, the cowl, the winglets, the elevator, and the rudder termination. The wing is totally devoid of aerodynamic appendages, a sign of high design quality. It has been carefully studied by Milan, who chose an MS (‘Medium Speed’) profile — MS316 at the root and MS 313 towards the tip of the wing, thus giving a twist guaranteeing healthy behaviour and roll control at critical incidences. Two luggage compartments in the middle of each wing can accommodate 20 kg (40 kg total), in addition to 15 kg in a trunk behind the pilots. The tanks have a capacity of 120 litres (86.4 kg) offering 5-6 hours of flight, depending on the regime. A large oil hatch on the engine cover allows easy inspection. Mechanics will appreciate the space that the B23 allows for access to the engine, and everything is ventilated. Volume is a strong point of this aircraft, something you realise once seated on board — including 1.30 m width at the shoulders, which is appreciable.

Comfortable, Functional Cockpit Access to the cockpit is very easy thanks to a small step well located near the trailing edge. A handle between the headrests allows you to hold on before sliding into the luxurious leather interior of the cabin. The seats are comfortable, with an armrest, and the dashboard is clear and well-equipped: Garmin G3X, GMC 507 autopilot, GAP 26 AOA (Angle of Attack) gauge, emergency horizon associated with an independent battery, Garmin GNC 255A NAV/COM+VOR antenna, and a red LED lighting for night flying. A sector throttle and hydraulic variable pitch control is provided as standard (there will be no fixed pitch version), and the cockpit also features a fuel selector, flap selector, ergonomic stick with roll trimmer adjustment and electric pitch on the joystick, and a parachute handle. “We can say that everything falls perfectly to hand,” says Bristell. Small pockets at the sides allows you to store a few cards or documents. “Everything has been well thought out.” Instructors will enjoy spending a few hours flying in this comfortable environment, as will their students. “A welcoming and comfortable workplace is important.” The rudder bars are adjustable with a small pull tab. The ergonomics of the pedals is interesting because it is in two parts, thus avoiding unwanted pressure on the brakes.

Flying the Bristell B23 915 The management of the Rotax 915 is novel. It is a more complex environment than a 912 and requires greater rigour from the pilot. As it works with a great electrical dependence, everything is redundant: two generators, two alternators, two pumps, therefore two separate circuits, A and B. We start by starting the PFD (Master button) and then we launch the ELT for alignment of the HRS. Lined up on Courchevel runway 04, full throttle, the B23 915 pulled out of the ground effect before it was halfway along the runway (537 m). Quickly it accelerated to 100 kt and you have to show it a pitchup attitude so as not to exceed Vfe, and quickly retract the flaps. Courchevel is at an altitude of 6,588 ft and thanks to the turbo the B23 915 does not lose power at altitude. We climb rapidly towards Mont Blanc, displaying 82 kt at VY and 1750 ft/min. Arrived at FL150, 5000 rpm, 35 inches at the intake we have 135 kt of TAS for a fuel consumption of 24 litres/hour. A test at full intake pressure (48.5 inches) and full throttle at 5,000 rpm, the B23 915 flew at 157 kt for 40 l/h. With our 120 l in the wings we can fly over 450 nm! We descended to 8,000 ft to try the performance with an economical display, i.e. 45% power, we obtain 110 kt TAS for only 17 l/h, enough to last seven hours in the air. The stall tests in all the configurations give a parachute drop between 39 kt and 43 kt. The plane warns and shows good healthy behaviour. Handling tests at different speeds show that the controls harden with speed, especially at the ailerons and remain very soft at low speeds. The B23 915 is precise thanks to its rod controls. The most impressive thing in flight is the superb visibility offered by a magical panorama of the Alps. The return to Courchevel and the landing are a formality for the B23. This plane has all the assets: that of a fast traveller if you are in a hurry, or an economical plane if you want to enjoy the scenery. Just enough time to put on the skis once the engine is off (be sure to wait two minutes for the turbo) and the ski slopes are ours! A fabulous experience with this small plane that has everything a big one can offer!

Garmin ‘Smart Glide’ Now Available for G5 and G3X Touch Displays Smart Glide technology, which automates tasks and reduces pilot workload in engine

power loss emergencies, is now available as a free software update for G3X Touch and the G5 electronic flight instrument in certified aircraft equipped with a GTN Xi series navigator. Garmin has announced that its Smart Glide technology, a revolutionary safety tool that helps pilots in loss of engine power emergencies by automating tasks to reduce pilot workload, is now available as a free software update for the G3X Touch and G5 electronic flight instrument (in certified aircraft equipped with a GTN Xi series navigator). Smart Glide compatibility can be added to a G3X Touch or G5 through the Garmin Authorized Dealer network. Smart Glide joins Collier Trophy winning Garmin Autoland as a part of Garmin’s Autonomí family of autonomous flight technologies. In the event of the loss of engine power in a single-engine aircraft, a pilot faces the urgent, workload-intensive job of manoeuvring the aircraft from its current position to a suitable airport. Smart Glide provides assistance to the pilot by recommending a suitable airport estimated to be within glide range, as well as providing critical information to the pilot and optimising select avionics settings, helping save the pilot precious time and workload. When paired with a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide can automatically engage the autopilot and pitch for the aircraft’s best glide speed while simultaneously navigating the aircraft within the vicinity of the selected airport so the pilot can execute an approach and landing.
Smart Glide Activation, Airport Selection Smart Glide can be activated with an optional Smart Glide button or by holding the Direct-to button for two seconds to initiate an activation. It considers several factors when choosing the recommended airport within glide range including runway length and condition; proximity; terrain; and available weather from sources such as FIS-B, SiriusXM, and Garmin Connext weather, in addition to current measured winds calculated by the primary flight display (PFD). When Smart Glide has been activated, the system will alert the pilot with an aural message stating that Smart Glide is active while also providing a quick reference to the selected airport within glide range in both bearing and distance to enhance situational awareness. In addition, Smart Glide provides automated adjustment of select avionics settings including the changing of the primary COM standby to the
airport CTAF or tower and automatic switching of the CDI to GPS mode. If the aircraft is equipped with a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide activation will automatically engage the autopilot to pitch for the best glide airspeed and activate GPS mode to enable navigation to the selected airport.
Access Critical Information Using the Smart Glide Page and the Map Page of the GTN Xi, pilots can more easily access critical Smart Glide information when they need it most and to better prepare for a landing at a potentially unfamiliar airport. The Smart Glide Page displays glide speed based on the specific aircraft, airport name, an alternate airport list, arrival above ground level (AGL) altitude, longest runway information including wind components if available, as well as a Smart Glide alert banner to keep the pilot notified of glide status and any pertinent instructions. The Map Page is another useful resource for pilots during a Smart Glide activation with a Glide Range Ring showing airports within glide range (dynamically adjusting based on winds and terrain).
Approach and Landing When the aircraft is within four nautical miles from the selected airport, Smart Glide will alert the pilot that they are approaching the airport environment with both an aural alert and visual banner. Within two miles of the airport, audible airport position alerts and a flashing red alert displayed on the GTN Xi will advise the pilot to resume control and begin maneuvering for landing.
Smart Glide Support In addition to the G3X Touch and G5, Smart Glide is also available for certified aircraft equipped with a GTN Xi series navigator paired with a G500 TXi/G6000 TXi or a GI 275 electronic flight instrument. Compatible Garmin autopilots such as GFC 500 or GFC 600 can be automatically engaged when Smart Glide is activated. For aircraft without a compatible Garmin autopilot, Smart Glide will still provide critical information and features to help manage engine emergencies and help to reduce pilot workload. Further, experimental aircraft with G3X Touch and a G3X autopilot can also enable Smart Glide technology when appropriately equipped. The optional Garmin Smart Glide activation button is also available for a list price of $129.

TOGETHER, AVIDYNE & DAEDALEAN ARE DEVELOPING THE FIRST CERTIFIED AIRBORNE SYSTEM CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING NEURAL NETWORK APPLICATIONS.
AI — Coming to an Aircraft Near You! Artificial intelligence (AI) technology is bridging the gap between the capabilities of humans and machines. This emerging technology is enabling machines to view the world much the way humans do, and to actually perceive the environment…then use that knowledge for a multitude of safety-enhancing tasks. About PilotEye & AI-based Technologies
As we are witnessing in the automotive market segment, major manufacturers are implementing AI technologies and convolutional neural network algorithms in safety-critical applications such as Mobile-Eye computer vision and 3D object detection and alerting.
Avidyne’s PilotEye — powered by Daedalean — is General Aviation’s first AI-based onboard pilot aid system, and is the first product from the collaboration between Avidyne and Daedalean.
With the simultaneous increase in the amount of data available and the exponential increases in available computational power, the application of AI and machine learning-technologies is proving beneficial for the aviation industry as well.
As the name implies, PilotEye serves as an additional set of eyes in the cockpit providing visual detection of airborne hazards, including non-cooperative traffic such as aircraft not equipped with ADS-B, drones, and birds.
Avidyne Corporation, a leading provider of integrated avionics systems, flight displays, and safety systems for General Aviation and business aircraft, along with Switzerland-based Daedalean AG, the leader in certifiable AI software in aviation, are together developing, manufacturing, and certifying advanced-technology airborne systems for General Aviation, Special Mission applications, and advanced air mobility markets, to be marketed as the Avidyne PilotEye Vision System.
‘See-and-Avoid’ is a key capability for piloting but cooperative traffic equipment is not always operating or installed. Visual traffic detection thus still is the pilot's responsibility. With the airspace being increasingly crowded with aircraft and very soon with drones of all sizes, human see-andavoid capabilities reach their limit. However, neural network-based vision systems can continuously and accurately monitor a broad field of view providing the pilot with a never-tired, never-distracted second set of eyes outside.
Avidyne and Daedalean are together developing, manufacturing and certifying advancedtechnology airborne systems that can perceive the flight environment and give pilots essential and timely information to improve decision making and enable safe and successful completion of any given mission. Leveraging advanced AI technologies, these solutions include camera-based systems for visual positioning and traffic detection, hazard avoidance, and landing guidance in day or night VMC & IMC, as well as providing the data that pilots need for quicker and more-accurate ‘landanywhere’ decision-making assistance in the event of an emergency.
On-board, vision-based AI technologies: Provide pilot advisories for fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft and full autonomy for future aircraft Continuously scan the sky for traffic and other airborne hazards Identify suitable landing areas in the event of an emergency See far more than human eyes Are never distracted Provide a dissimilar, redundant guidance source, enabling safe and autonomous operation Can be combined with other data sources and merged onto a single intuitive display.
Avidyne and Daedalean will be making additional AI-based product announcements in coming months. PilotEye pricing and availability will be made public later this year.
Benefits for Pilots and Aircraft Operators These on-board, adaptive, vision-based AI Technologies can: • Detect, classify and track airborne hazards including birds and drones in proximate airspace • Identify and display areas suitable for emergency, precautionary and normal landing • Operate independent of GPS or groundbased infrastructure • Provide dissimilar, redundant guidance source, enabling safe and autonomous operation • Enhance and improve its performance in realtime operation • Provide pilot advisory in normal GA operations for fixed-wing and rotorcraft and full autonomy for Advanced Air Mobility aircraft, eVTOLS, and autonomous drones
Certifying AI Certification of learning algorithms and processes constitutes a paradigm shift compared to traditional system and software development processes for GA applications. Avidyne and Daedalean are leading the way in driving design assurance levels and certification of these adaptive, non-deterministic, AI-based aviation solutions for that will make your flying even safer and more enjoyable.

The market for aircraft maintenance and overhaul is expected to grow by 3.7 per cent annually until 2026. © Pratt & Whitney Canada
MAINTENANCE: The art of Keeping Aircraft Flying The market for aircraft and helicopter maintenance and overhaul is currently split in two. While companies specialised in the maintenance of general aviation aircraft and business jets are expanding, maintenance companies for airliners do not have enough orders. But the overall outlook for the industry is positive, even if the future holds some challenges. The pictures went around the world: with the outbreak of the Corona crisis at the beginning of 2020 and the massive slump in civil air traffic, thousands of commercial aircraft stood idle on the aprons — and in some cases on runways that had been temporarily converted into parking areas. Where there is no flying, there is no need for maintenance and overhaul services, one would think. But this is not the case, because even parked aircraft need to be looked after and regularly maintained. Even mothballing an aircraft for a longer period is labour-intensive and requires technical specialists. That is why the airline industry’s maintenance companies still had work to do at the beginning of the pandemic. But, as the crisis progressed, maintenance operations for commercial aircraft were also hit hard and some had to reduce capacity and lay off staff. 22 PISTON BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2022
GA Market Was Resilient The situation was different in the maintenance operations for general and business aviation. With the exception of a few months of restrictions, General Aviation aircraft continued to fly during the crisis, while Business Aviation not only recovered after a brief slump in movements, but even reached new records in passenger and movement figures in 2021 due to massive demand. The need for maintenance of piston-powered aircraft and business jets was and is correspondingly high. Wherever there is a lot of flying, a correspondingly large number of inspections have to be carried out and parts such as tyres and brakes have to be replaced. From this point of view,

the maintenance industry is divided: companies that take care of ‘large’ aircraft have problems, while maintenance companies that take care of smaller aircraft go about their normal business activities. The global trend in aviation maintenance is clearly geared towards growth in the medium and long term. According to a new study by ResearchAndMarkets, the global aviation maintenance market will grow by an average of 3.7 percent annually across all sectors from 2021 to 2026 — despite the impact of the Corona crisis on airlines.
A well-stocked, digitally connected spare parts warehouse is a flagship for any maintenance operation. © Paul Kaps
Example: RAS One example of this trend is the aviation service provider Rheinland Air Service (RAS) from Mönchengladbach, Germany. It has started building a third hangar at Mönchengladbach Airport in March 2021 due to the favourable order situation. The project — the largest facility expansion in the company’s history — involves investments of 15 million Euros and is scheduled for completion this summer. In addition to two maintenance halls and a large spare parts warehouse, modern offices will also be built on the site. Even before the Corona crisis, RAS was experiencing a steady increase in orders from business aviation customers — so new capacity, both in terms of space and personnel, is urgently being created. RAS will create 50 new jobs in the short term and up to 100 in the long term.
This photo shows why only specialists are allowed to carry out avionics maintenance. © V. K. Thomalla
The expansion of operations and the start of construction of the third hangar were originally planned for 2020, but were then postponed by a year due to the ongoing crisis. A difficult situation, because the permanent lack of space meant that RAS could not accept all orders for the maintenance and repair of business jets. With the expansion of operational capacities and the creation of new jobs, RAS is now embarking on a clear growth course and is looking forward to being able to serve all requests in the future, not only in business aviation, but also in the company’s division of special-mission aircraft for civil and military purposes. Currently, more than 50 ATR aircraft and more than 100 business jets are serviced, repaired and maintained by Rheinland Air Service.
Lock-Down Upgrades The mandatory equipping of business jets with ADS-B equipment had caused a boom in modification orders for maintenance shops before the pandemic, especially in the United States. In Europe, this order wave arrived with a time lag. In the meantime, it has ebbed away. During the pandemic, quite a few aircraft owners decided to have their aircraft equipped with new avionics or to have the interior refurbished and ordered corresponding modifications to their aircraft. For pistonpowered aircraft, the trend to convert from an analogue to a digital cockpit is still in full swing, as more and more pilots recognise and appreciate the advantages of glass cockpits and digital instruments over the old instruments. Moreover, the value of an aircraft is increased not inconsiderably by such modernisation. The newest trends in aircraft modification, cabin refurbishments, and engine overhaul can be seen, among others, from 27th to 30th April at AERO Friedrichshafen, where major maintenance companies are exhibiting. Closely related to the maintenance and overhaul of an aircraft is the issue of spare parts, which can lead to undesirable waiting times of several days or — if the part has to be specially manufactured — even several weeks, especially for older aircraft that are no longer in production. Especially when it comes to procuring rare parts, a good maintenance

AERO 2022 will take place in Friedrichshafen, Germany, from April 27 to April 30, 2022. The show will focus on the industry’s restart after the pandemic, and the topic of sustainability in aviation will also play a central role. The upcoming edition will offer a complete range of products for all areas of General Aviation. Aircraft ranging from civil drones to gliders, ultralights and gyrocopters, helicopters, touring and training aircraft with piston or turboprop engines and business jets will be present. New propulsion systems, electric flight, state-of-theart avionics, services, and accessories for pilots are further focal points. These topics are also reflected in the AERO Conferences, making Europe’s largest General Aviation event also an important platform for knowledge exchange and continuing education.

company network pays off for the customer. But, even today, the digital networking of maintenance companies is not universal. Companies that have not yet switched to fully digitalised goods management must take this overdue step quickly to be able to serve their customers promptly with the spare parts they need. Today, no company can stock all the necessary spare parts for all the aircraft types it supports. This would involve tying up far too much capital. But good networking with manufacturers and spare parts distributors is a worthwhile and profitable investment that pays off in terms of faster availability of spare parts for customers. That even a spare parts online shop is worthwhile is shown by the company Global Aviation + Piper Parts from Kassel-Calden. This German company always has more than 60,000 parts in its warehouse which can be ordered online. Global Aviation + Piper Parts is the largest distributor of original Piper spare parts in Europe.
schools and aero clubs to test its suitability for everyday use. For the maintenance companies, such a change in propulsion technology means a complete reorientation. Technicians who previously worked on combustion engines have to completely relearn how to maintain and repair electric motors and the associated systems such as batteries and controllers. This requires the companies to invest heavily in the training and further education of their staff, but also in new tools and test equipment.
Investing in Skills Finding qualified personnel is becoming increasingly difficult for maintenance companies. Although it is easier for staff to move from one company to another, even internationally, thanks to common standards set by EASA in Europe, the pool for junior technicians is slowly drying up. This is not a national phenomenon, but one that affects maintenance operations throughout Europe.
www.aero-expo.com and https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/aeroshow
Training maintenance technicians is a lengthy process and although the chances of finding a secure, well-paid and varied job are excellent, the word has not yet spread everywhere. A job in aircraft maintenance offers responsible tasks and rarely boredom. But it also demands constant training and regular renewal of employee licences. In its latest Pilot and Technician Outlook 2021 – 2040, Boeing projects that 626,000 new maintenance technicians will be needed for the commercial aviation sector alone. A lack of qualified personnel impairs the growth opportunities of the companies and thus the functioning of the entire industry. Because one thing is certain: aircraft cannot fly without competent maintenance. ■

Focus on Sustainability The maintenance industry is constantly changing. Although some of the aircraft in the sky today are over 40 or 50 years old, aviation is still an industry of innovation. This is also reflected in the maintenance industry. Maintenance organisations must never stop learning. They are looking for improved processes and ways of working to serve their customers faster and better. But they are also forced to adapt by new developments. One example is the goal of aviation to become more sustainable and drastically reduce CO2 emissions. For general aviation, many aircraft manufacturers and pilots alike believe that electric propulsion is a viable way to decarbonise aviation. The Pipistrel Velis Electro, the first all-electric powered aircraft, has already been certified by EASA and is currently being operated by various flying

Aero-Dienst Explains Life Raft Expertise Safety is our highest priority. We explain how we contribute to your travel safety by maintaining life rafts. In an interview, the head of the component shop at Aero-Dienst, Ralf Dohle, gives us an insight into services of the Winslow life rafts, some requirements of the authorities and our good relationship with the Winslow LifeRaft Company.
How should we visualise a life raft on board an aircraft or helicopter, and where is it located? "First of all, there may well be more than one life raft on board. Various factors, such as the type of aircraft, the maximum number of passengers, whether the aircraft is used privately or commercially and where it is registered determine the number of mandatory life rafts and their features. Depending on the regulation that the aircraft is flying under, two life rafts might be required to ensure redundancy. This means that for example even if one life raft fails there will always be sufficient capacity for all people on board."

According to some regulations, you would have to be able to accommodate at least two life rafts on board. Life rafts take up quite a lot of space in the cabin, don't they? "That’s correct. Depending on the placement options and customer requirements, there are different locations in the cabin that can accommodate the life rafts. The primary goal is to make the best use of the space in the cabin, so it may be easier to stow away three smaller life rafts than two larger ones. We are also happy to work together with our customers´ engineering about this on site and can recommend the optimal installation locations for each individually equipped cabin and the appropriate packing formats, of which there are many. The selection of options is therefore very large. We always work with the goal of using the space in the cabin efficiently to provide more comfort for the passenger during flight. We have many years of experience in this area."

Ralf, you stated that you have many years of experience with life rafts.…experience with Winslow life rafts? "Yes, exactly! We are very pleased to be able to provide Winslow life raft customers with a full range of services. We have been a WINSLOW Authorized Repair Station since July 2020 and offer all services for life rafts of the Winslow LifeRaft Company, a division of Collins Aerospace. We perform the following services for Winslow life rafts: complete overhaul, (re)programming of the emergency locator transmitter (ELT), replacement, new sales and loaner life rafts. The eight-member expert team consists of technicians with several years of life raft experience and one employee with over 10 years of consulting and sales experience for Winslow life rafts. We simply stand behind the products of the Winslow Life Raft Company, and one of the reasons is that Winslow is a leader in innovation. Winslow invented and introduced vacuum packaging, which allows for a three-year maintenance cycle instead of one year. This saves the customer valuable time and money.” The complete life raft overhaul includes the pressure test, the hydrostatic test of the cylinder, the recertification of the ELT and the check of the SEP kit. Aero-Dienst´s component shop offers a 24-hour AOG service for life rafts and other components. The component shop also provides speedy and expert service for other aircraft components such as FMS flight navigation units, main batteries, emergency power supplies, FDRs and CVRs. Please contact

MARCH 2022
The P-51 Mustang Alongside the British Spitfire and the German ME109; the American P-51 Mustang is one of the most iconic aircraft to come out of WWII. As you well know, every plane has its story, but they aren’t always what you might expect — and the same can be said for the origin of the mighty Mustang…I bet you didn’t know, for example, that one of its finest attributes (its wing) came from the organisation that put man on the Moon! With the Help of NASA… The P-51’s origin can be traced right back to the rejection of one idea, that was replaced with another. The British Aircraft Purchasing Commission had established talks with North American in 1940 to ask them if they could build P40s under licence from Curtiss. However, in response, North American proposed something different instead: they wanted to produce a completely ground-up design, an entirely new aircraft — The P-51 (nicknamed the Mustang!) North American set about its task in swift time and, using experimental data obtained from the US National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics or ‘NACA’ (which in 1958 became NASA), they achieved a giant leap in performance from the P40 by using a newly designed laminar wing profile. This moved the maximum thickness of the wing further aft from the leading edge and used 40 HISTORIC AIRCRAFT EUROPE MARCH 2022
nearly as much camber on the bottom of the wing as on the top. This feature reduced turbulent air flow across the wing, resulting in reduced drag thereby increasing speed and range. The Mustang’s aft-mounted radiator design was also something to behold for not only did it decrease fuselage drag, it also utilised the heated air exiting the radiator as a form of jet propulsion to give it an extra bit of thrust called the ‘Meredith Effect’ (named after British engineer F.W. Meredith, who worked at the Defence Research Establishment at Farnborough, during the 1930s). Less than 120 days after the British accepted North American’s proposal, North American flew the Mustang prototype. This was on the 26th of October 1940. The P-51 (‘P’ for Pursuit) entered service in Britain in early 1942, but reports were
raised about the declining performance above 15,000 ft. The aircraft was initially powered by the same Alison single stage supercharged engine found in the P40. So the British, never being shy of putting their own mark on things, experimented with fitting their powerful RollsRoyce Merlin 61 engine (the same as found in the Mk. IX Spitfire). To their delight, they discovered that the Merlin’s two-stage supercharger gave the Mustang outstanding high-altitude performance. North American quickly followed the Brits’ lead and by the summer of 1943, the Packard Merlin (licence-built Merlins) powered all P-51s coming off North American’s assembly line. The best known and undoubtedly successful variant was the P-51D. powered by the Packard V-1650-7 licence-built version of the highly

two-speed, two-stage-supercharged Merlin 66. The ‘D’ included several design changes but visibly the most notable was probably the installation of a new Plexiglas ‘bubble’ canopy for improved all-around vision (the early canopies suffered with limited rear visibility). This most celebrated version flew at a maximum speed of 440 miles per hour and if left climbing could reach a ceiling of almost 42,000 feet (that’s above the service ceiling limits of most commercial jets!).
When the North American assembly line in Dallas, Texas finally closed its doors on Mustang production, more than 15,000 Mustangs had been built. In the European theatre the Mustang destroyed nearly 5,000 enemy aircraft and destroyed more than 4,000 targets on the ground, having flown very close to 214,000 missions.
These aircraft proved a game-changer as the P-51’s performance, and therefore combat superiority, increased significantly. That, combined with the aircraft’s amazing range, meant the German Luftwaffe took a huge, unexpected knock as their recorded losses of Me109s and Fw 190s increased dramatically.
Our stunning picture aircraft was built in 1944 as a P-51D and was one of the last Mustangs built by North American. Just before the Korean War it was converted to an F-51D and was shipped to South Korea where it served with the 45th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Kimpo. But Mustangs were phased out in favour of jet technology, which in Korea took the shape of the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star jet fighter. So the Mustangs were retired back to the USA.
miles per hour and if left
You will have likely noticed already that the canopy on this one is elongated to accommodate a second pilot. During its restoration, between 2005 to 2007, it was converted to a training variant, so this is called a TF-51D (‘T’ for Training). There are two main conversions possible to add a back seat in a Mustang — one is a ‘jump seat’ and aimed to give people the ‘Mustang experience’; and the other is a full second cockpit and can be used for training pilots converting on to the type. Either way, getting airborne in a Mustang is something very special indeed.

A Plane of Firsts The Mustang was the first US-built fighter to press into the European theatre after the fall of France. And it was the first single-engine aircraft based in Britain to reach Berlin. In his comments about using the Mustang to escort bomber raids over Germany, Mustang ace Brig. Gen. Thomas ‘Tommy’ Hayes said that the Merlin-powered P-51 “had the three qualities you need most if you were going to escort bombers to Berlin – range, range and range!” Add to that Mustang ace Col. Clarence E. “Bud” Anderson’s comments about performance, when he said that the Mustang “went like hell!” It’s fair to say it was a very well-liked aircraft and it was nothing short of formidable in its military role. But one of the highest accolades formally recorded was following its review in 1944 by the Truman Senate War Investigating Committee who said [at the time] that it was “the most aerodynamically perfect pursuit plane in existence.” The Mustang served the allied forces proudly right through to the end of the war. Not only was it capable of escorting bombers all the way to Germany (and able to return) but it’s all-round performance gave it superb qualities in a number of combat applications — it had speed, superb high-altitude performance, excellent low-altitude handling performance, and of course it had the range to get to Berlin and back. And, towards the end of the war, it could go head-to-head with Germany’s incredible jet fighter; the Me262. But the story doesn’t end there as the Mustang continued its active service following WWII in multiple theatres, including notably as a ground-attack fighter in the Korean War (1950–53). During this time the ‘P’ was changed to an ‘F’ for Fighter.
Contrary Mary
“This most celebrated version flew at a maximum speed of 440 climbing could reach a ceiling of almost 42,000 feet (that’s above the most commercial jets!)”
The livery is that of ‘Contrary Mary’ - USAAF 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group USAAF (Duxford, UK) as flown by pilot Lt Col Roy B Caviness. Lt. Col. Roy Caviness was a highly decorated USAAF pilot. The Squadron was stationed at Duxford with its primary mission being to escort heavy bombers to Berlin. But they also took part in fighter sweeps and ground-attack missions.

AERIAL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
The Conservationists of Aerial Work Aviation
So commonly, we forget by definition that humans are animals, part of an ecosystem just like any other lifeform on the planet. With that, it’s critical that humans balance the needs of wildlife with the needs of people, i.e., Wildlife Management. If you didn’t know, Aerial Work aviation is a significant player in this effort of protecting and preserving the species and habitats between humans and the environment of the world.
42 AERIAL WORK EUROPE MARCH 2022
Every day, many men and women are committed to protecting species and habitats. In most cases, a handful of wildlife management professionals cover thousands of square miles on foot, SUVs, and horses across many diverse ecological corners of the globe to preserve the natural world we know. Unfortunately, they are at times out-manned and under-equipped in their efforts to end issues like poaching and illegal logging. However, when it comes to wildlife managers around the globe mitigating these challenges, the power of aviation is a critical tool in giving them the upper hand or chance to succeed. The Aerial Work aviation sector is working hard to provide aerial conservation services while taking direct responsibility to help defend endangered wildlife in remaining protected and remote areas by delivering specialised aviation capabilities to government agencies and conservation organisations.
To better understand what this Aerial Work aviation sector actually does, we need to focus on what Wildlife Management and the types of Aerial Conservation aviation explicitly provide. Additionally, like other Aerial Work aviation sectors, we need to concentrate on the specific types of aircraft and technology they employ or ‘what works best’ for the Wildlife Management community to get the right results.
Wildlife Management Triad In its basic form, Wildlife Management controls interactions among and between flora and fauna, habitats, and people to achieve predefined effects. It tries to balance the needs of wildlife with the needs of people using the best available science. Wildlife Management can include wildlife conservation, gamekeeping, and pest control.

“The Aerial Work aviation sector is working hard to provide aerial conservation services...
”
As mentioned before, today, wildlife conservation has evolved into a science. Still, its goal remains essentially the same, i.e., to ensure the wise use and management of renewable resources — maintaining a healthy relationship between the ecosystem of humans and the environment. Given the right circumstances and effort, living organisms that we call renewable resources in our world’s ecosystem can replenish themselves indefinitely. The bottom line is that conservation is the wise use of natural resources without wasting them. Simply, it’s a management environment that is built around 1. People, 2. Habitats, and 3. Wildlife — i.e., a ‘Triad’. Within this, there are two general types of Wildlife Management methods used: Manipulative Management, and Custodial Management:
Manipulative Management Manipulative Management acts on a specific wildlife population, either changing its numbers by direct means or influencing numbers by the indirect means of altering food supply, habitat, the density of predators, or disease occurrence. This effort is appropriate when a population decreases or increases to an unacceptable level.
Custodial Management Custodial Management is preventive or protective. Custodial Management aims to minimise external influences on the population and its habitat. For example, it is appropriate in a national park where one of the stated goals is to protect ecological processes through control mechanisms. It is also appropriate to conserve a threatened species where the threat is of external origin rather than being natural to the system, e.g., feeding animals by park visitors, which is generally discouraged.
Aerial Conservation Operations So, what does this unique Aerial Work sector do to support the Wildlife Management Triad? From an obvious utility and essential perspective, Aerial Work aviation provides the means to mitigate the tyranny of distance, time, and expense associated with managing large areas of habitats and specific ecosystems. However, the specific types of services and flight operations routinely requested and conducted by aerial conservationists are much different from other Aerial Work sectors but designed to support the Wildlife Management community.
Types of Services Even though Aerial Conservation services are adaptable to all wildlife and conservation operations, the primary services provided to Wildlife Management government officials and managers included: Analysis – Analysis delivers actual or near real-time situational information and monitoring of species and
habitats for all key end-users as needed, e.g., helping assess risk, monitoring, and crisis decision-making. Prevention – Prevention provides better capabilities for an organisation to help reduce the likelihood of damaging or illegal activity associated with particular habitats and species. Intervention – Intervention is people’s deliberate and targeted involvement in changing wild species’ population, structure, or distribution, particularly terrestrial mammals and birds. Transportation – Transportation moves humans, flora & fauna, plus equipment and technology associated with specialised wildlife management tasks, e.g., capturing, gathering biological samples, placing radio & satellite collars, and handling wild animals. To break this down further and as a sample, aerial conversationists routinely provide these types of focused services: •
Habitat and Rangeland Evaluation
•
Aerial Census and Classification
•
Animal Capture through Herding, Drive Netting, Corral Trapping, Net Gunning, or Chemical Immobilisation
•
Feral Animal and Predator Eradication
•
Veterinary Services from Vaccination to Transportation
•
Population Management
•
Fowl Nest Surveys
•.
And many more…
Types of Flight Operations As mentioned before, Aerial Conservation services undertake a wide variety of concentrated tasks. This could include aerial counts, drop-offs for ground surveys in remote areas, darting, chemical immobilisation, net gunning, taking, classification, herding, drive netting, corralling, and supporting research projects. To get a feel for what it takes to fly one of these operations, a typical aerial wildlife survey or count requires an aircraft to fly ‘low & slow’ so aerial observers can adequately identify their target species.

For waterfowl counts, fixed-wing aircraft generally fly 500ft between targeted waterbodies. When over the waterbody, aircraft generally descend to 100-150ft at a ground speed of 90 to 110 knots (22 knots for rotorwing aircraft) to correctly acquire, track and identify. When it comes to medium & large mammal counts (e.g., deer, wild pigs, goats, and even kangaroos), fixed-wing aircraft will be flown at a height of 250ft and a ground speed of 100 knots, while rotor-wing aircraft at a height of 150ft and a ground speed of 50 knots.
Aerial Conservationist With an ever-growing human population and shrinking natural habitats worldwide, this onerous duty of Wildlife Management primarily lies with government bodies, charities, and privately hired gamekeepers and contractors. When it comes to the aviators that support such organisations, the majority are non-profit groups, private aviation firms, or independent contractors hired to provide specific aerial services. Here are three Aerial Work organisations that genuinely specialise in or focus on Aerial Wildlife Management operations: Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Airwing The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Airwing was established in 1990 with more than 40 pilots to provide air support services to wildlife management efforts across Kenya. The airwing is based at Wilson Airport in Nairobi with an active fleet of 12 light and three medium aircraft, including a Bell 206 helicopter, Cessna 182, Cessna 206, Cessna 208 Caravan, and four Aviat Huskys. KWS Airwing provides law enforcement services and patrol flights, veterinary support services for research and translocation purposes, animal tracking, wildlife census, firefighting, rescue work, and transportation of rations and supplies, including ammunition for antipoaching operations. Canadian Wildlife Capture Canadian Wildlife Capture (CWC) was formed in 2012 to assist users in the ongoing management of wildlife. CWC is based out of Powell River, B.C., and works throughout Western Canada. CWC primarily uses MD500 helicopters to provide net gunning, darting, ear tagging, radio/satellite collar mounting, biological sampling, control/removal/culling, and animal relocations. The Bateleurs Formed in 1998, The Bateleurs is a South African nonprofit company that provides decision-makers, researchers, educators, and other non-profit companies with an aerial perspective of the environment. Since its formation, the Bateleurs has coordinated several diverse missions throughout South Africa and Africa generally to support conservation and wildlife issues. On 27 July 2021, eight African Wild Dogs were relocated successfully from South Africa and Mozambique to Liwonde National Park and Majete Wildlife Reserve, in an historic project to reintroduce this endangered species to Malawi. Bateleurs volunteers accomplished the translocation project flying a Pilatus PC-12 with its capabilities of providing a spacious cabin for eight sedated dogs, high-speed, an all-weather avionics system, and the ability to land on unpaved runways.
Aircraft & Kit Composition The composition of aircraft & kit used in Aerial Conservation varies from manned and unmanned aircraft and, in some cases, heavier-than-air (Aerodyne)
44 AERIAL WORK EUROPE MARCH 2022
to lighter-than-air (Aerostat) platforms. However, today’s predominant aircraft are still fixed-wing and rotary-wing manned aircraft.
Manned Aircraft The dominant aircraft types in the manned aircraft field are either single or twin-prop STOL/medium-lift airframes or modified light-lift rotary-wing platforms. In the task of habitat and rangeland evaluation, the most common aircraft are fixed-wing, such as: •
ICP – ICP Savannah
•
Cessna – C-172, C-180
•
Pilatus – PC-12
Nothing matches a helicopter for animal capture through drive netting, corral trapping, net gunning, or chemical immobilisation. As mentioned before, helicopters can manoeuvre like a park ranger on horseback but with many more benefits. Some of the most common cost-effective but practical helicopters used today for aerial ‘down & dirty’ operations are: •
Robinson – R22, R44
•
Bell – Bell 407s
•
M.D. Helicopters – MD530FF
Unmanned Aircraft In Wildlife Management, drone technology has become even more popular in recent years. Today, drones count animals that congregate, especially those in herds, such as snow goose and wildebeest. In addition, they’re used to finding and identifying animals in hard-to-access remote locations.
and researchers with an affordable option to make a difference between saving a species or failure. Like the manned aircraft sector, the unmanned sector is currently expanding in flying the skies over forests, oceans, and urban areas with both fixed-wing and rotary-wing unmanned aircraft, but on a much lower and smaller scale – for now. Depending on the scale of the project, the current leading providers of data collecting platforms in the unmanned aircraft OEM sector are: •
Unmanned Research – Long Ranger 7, Osprey Mark III (Gas or Electric)
•
DJI – Phantom 4 RTK
•
SenseFly – eBee Plus
Summary As you can see, the Aerial Work aviation sector plays a critical part in many global Wildlife Management efforts. Remarkably, both manned and unmanned aircraft of all types are used to protect and preserve the species and habitats between humans and the world’s environment. Because of the unique capabilities aircraft deliver, the Wildlife Management and Conservationist community are better equipped to make a difference.
Additionally, drones are utilised in counter-poaching operations and to map habitats. The benefits of using such technology are evident in many fields, including environmental sciences.
Even though mankind is just one part of a more extensive ecosystem, it has more of the responsibility to ensure the balance between all creatures and things. Besides researchers, park rangers, veterinarians, and volunteers of all types managing species and habitats, the Aerial Work aviation sector will continue to stay in the field directly working with these conservationists to make a difference.
Undoubtedly, unmanned Aerial Work aircraft are expanding in their support of the conservation sector. In addition, the unmanned aircraft industry sector is expanding its platform options to supply park rangers
Until endangered and threatened species are fully protected, Aerial Work aviation will continue to fly in the most vulnerable habitats to help preserve our physical plant. ■

WILD DOGS Special Transportation with a
PILATUS PC-12 By Raymond Steyn Authorised Pilatus Centre Southern Africa, (PTY) Ltd.
Wild animals are frequently moved around by aircraft and helicopter in southern Africa, but it is not often, however, that a PC-12 is used to transport wild dogs. Such an unusual assignment is not without its challenges, as you will find out below. Towards the end of November 2016, ‘The Bateleurs’ (see Box) received a request to move eight wild dogs by air. Five females and three males were to be relocated from KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to the Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana. The goal of the project was to expand the habitat of endangered African wild dogs in southern Africa, and also to increase the population in the region. To achieve this, they had been asked to assist in moving two groups of genetically unrelated wild dogs.
The PC-12: the Perfect Solution Tim Webster and Raymond Steyn of the Authorised Pilatus Centre South Africa are both members of The Bateleurs, and volunteer both aircraft and piloting skills to the organisation. The centre agreed to do the transfer using a PC-12. The Swiss-made PC-12 was perfect for this job, which required all the characteristics that set this aircraft apart: a spacious cabin for the eight dogs, high speed for the relatively long distance, the ability to fly in bad weather if need be, and the option to land on unpaved runways. All in all, the PC-12 proved an indispensable ‘removal van’.
sheeting was also rolled out over the floor to prevent any animal fluids from contaminating the aircraft. The two pilots were about to start on a very long day! The plan was to fly to Ladysmith to collect the three males and the vet before heading to Mkuze to collect the five females. Then there would be a stop at Polokwane International Airport to clear immigration and customs before the PC-12 could fly its precious cargo on to Limpopo Valley Airport in Botswana, where the wild dogs would be released into their new home.
Bad Weather and Sleeping Dogs The team had to wait for a long time at Lanseria due to bad weather. A gap in the front finally allowed them to depart for Ladysmith to board the three males and their vet. Further bad weather forced the PC-12 to divert to Richard’s Bay Airport, 150 km from Mkuze, to pick up the five female wild dogs. Some time later, the PC-12 finally took off from Richard’s Bay with all eight wild dogs on board.
The move involved relocating five females from Tembe Elephant Park and three males from the UmPhafa Private Nature Reserve to the Northern Tuli Game Reserve. The project required meticulous preparation and good collaboration between the numerous organisations involved: the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), in care of overall planning, plus several wildlife protection organisations such as Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the WildlifeACT Fund, Colchester Zoo, Botswana Department of Wildlife and Veterinary services and the Northern Tuli Game Reserve.
The next stop was Polokwane to clear customs and immigration. The airport officials were extremely helpful. Even for them, clearing wild dogs through customs and immigration was by no means an everyday experience. We suspect the nature of the ‘cargo’ probably helped to ensure that the stopover was completed in only 20 minutes! The customs officers were fascinated by the sleeping dogs, but also rather worried they might wake up before the PC-12 was off the tarmac again.
Good Planning is Essential
After the short stopover in Polokwane, the PC-12 continued on to Northern Tuli Game Reserve. Luckily, there were no veterinary emergencies during the flight and all eight dogs arrived at their new home in Botswana in good health, if still slightly groggy from the anaesthetic. The project has been a great success, and the dogs have settled down very well in their new habitat.
The sun had not yet risen when the two pilots, Tim and Raymond, arrived at Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, to prepare the PC-12 (ZSNYM) for the flight. Inside the cabin, all the seats except two, for the vet and his assistant, were removed. Plastic

Recently, we were asked to quote on insurance for a maintenance business and having been successful, it occurred to us how significant this area is — and how much the flying community relies on good maintenance. Pilots and aircraft owners almost always take it on trust that the mechanics and engineers are professionals who have a good safety culture, high quality workmanship, and many years’ experience of the engines, airframes and avionics they are tasked with maintaining.
Insurance is vital as even the best organisations face the risk of damage to aircraft and components in their care, or to workers and others in the hangar. Meanwhile faulty workmanship may have implications that don’t appear for days, months or years after an aircraft has returned to flying. So please do feel free to ask us for a quote and we can help you to ensure the cover you have does really cover all the aspects mentioned above in a comprehensive way.

Of all the different land, ground and sea personnel and equipment hard at work across the global energy grid, manned and unmanned aircraft are probably near the top of the list of platforms that ensure energy is delivered from the drilling rig to your home safely. Governments around the globe require oil, gas and chemical pipeline operators to conduct periodic inspections to detect risks to both the network and the general public. In addition, the possibilities of natural disasters, security threats, and product theft require even greater pipeline monitoring diligence.
With more than 2,000,000 miles (3,218,69 km) of pipeline in over 100 countries worldwide, the more traditional ground methods of inspection, survey, and repair are proving to be both slow and costly. Therefore, with the unique capabilities and reach of the Aerial Work aviation sector, pipeline operators can leverage this air power to ensure their networks are flowing smoothly without worry.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
