Charity to Upgrade/Sell Grob Motor Gliders Charity to revamp ex-RAF motor-gliders with new engines and avionics, keeping some and selling some. Blackbushe Airport, UK-based charity Aerobility has acquired 63 former air cadet motor-gliders form the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). The aircraft have been grounded for some years due to airworthiness issues which gave Aerobility an opportunity to create “Project Able” to being some of them back into service. The decommissioned Vigilant T1s (based on the Grob 109B, which first flew in March 1980) will be given a new name — Grob 109 Able. They were previously used “to train thousands of air cadets,” said the Royal Air Force, “but will now get a new lease of life and bring joy to people with disabilities and injured ex-military personnel.” The first batch of 10 gliders will be modified and refurbished by German company Grob — the original manufacturer and Design Authority for the type – to meet civil certification standards. The remaining aircraft will be engineered and recertified in the UK, where Aerobility has “identified a qualified engineering partner in Southern Sailplanes.” Some will be modified and some will be sold. The cost of the aircraft is being covered via a grant from the Department for Transport (DfT), said the RAF, which added that Aerobility will eventually “be able to help about 2,600 people into the air every year compared to 1,000 currently.” Modifications will include new Rotax 912iS3 engines, new propellers and refurbished cockpits incorporating “the latest Garmin glass cockpit avionics.” The charity hopes the first glider will be ready to fly in the summer of 2021 at Blackbushe. Aerobility currently operates four modified aircraft — a Piper PA-28 Warrior, a PA-32 Cherokee Six, a Tecnam P2002, and a Zenair CH 750 STOL. They operate at its Blackbushe base and from Tattenhill Aerodrome in Staffordshire.

UK Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “General aviation is the engine room of the entire aviation sector, so it’s vital that people from all backgrounds can access it. Some of our most successful pilots learnt to fly in a glider and I’m encouraged to see the work of charities like Aerobility offering similar experiences to people who may otherwise miss out.” Clive Walker, head of the UK Defence Equipment Sales Authority (DESA), said: “I am very pleased to see the RAF Vigilant T1 gliders move on to a new lease of life, in particular supporting the excellent work of Aerobility in creating flying experiences and opportunities for those who might otherwise never get the chance to fly.” According to Aerobility CEO, Mike Miller-Smith, “Acquiring these aircraft will help us transform the lives of an even greater number of disabled people by giving them the unrivalled sense of freedom through the magic of flight. “We are extremely grateful to the Ministry of Defence, Department for Transport and our various partners for supporting us in this ambitious project. Not only will it help us build capacity for our future operations, it will enable us to expand the charity to support more disabled people and to do so at additional locations around the UK.” Some of the aircraft will be refurbished and sold to generate revenue for Aerobility, for example to pay for the ongoing costs of operating the fleet and help the charity “to branch out into other parts of the British Isles.” For example four full-time engineering jobs will be created, along with a project management role and an administration position. In addition, the charity plans to add a full-time co-ordinator and a part-time flying instructor, with Aerobility hoping where possible to fill all the positions with candidates with a disability.

Aviation businesses are not just about flight risks! So says Approach Aviation Insurance, a trading unit of Export & General Insurance Services Limited (E&G), which provides specialist insurance to aviation businesses focused on the UK and European markets. Insurance is a topic that has become more of interest than usual with COVID19 hitting aviation so hard, but at the same time economic life needs to tickover and be ready to restart in earnest when restrictions start to lift. A recent new client for Approach Aviation Insurance was Insight Aviation Group at Bournemouth International Airport. A specialist maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) provider to the general aviation sector, insight has been growing fast after being founded by experienced licensed engineer Chris Beddis in 2015. Planning for new hangar space meant looking for public liability cover but it was only when Beddis came across Approach Aviation Insurance and met with E&G chairman, Chris Varley, that a sensible package could be put together with leading insurers. “With Insight it was all about responsiveness and listening to what they needed — hangar-keepers liability and professional indemnity,� said Varley, who finds his aviation background (originally an engineer and still a private pilot) helps secure aviation clients. Ground handling provider/loadmaster Pro4aviation (Pro4aviation.org), which specialises in Boeing freighters and in particularly the B747F, was another recent client for Approach Aviation Insurance. Pro4aviation managing director John Organ told GA Buyer that he’d spent six weeks searching for insurance to cover his workers for public liability and professional indemnity. “Most companies I found wouldn’t deal with my kind of operation — UKbased but with workers worldwide, mainly the United States, Africa and Europe,� said Organ. He eventually found Approach Aviation Insurance and Chris Varley was able to secure cover with a leading London-based insurer. Organ said responsiveness — the willingness to find a solution having fully understood what was required — was the other main differentiator that set Approach apart. A final illustration of how Approach Aviation Insurance has been succeeding covering a broad range of aviation businesses, through knowledge of the sector and attention to real customer needs, is Eden Flight Training at Teeside International Airport. The Pilot’s View: Human Factors & Safety in Avionics Have avionics become so sophisticated that human factors don’t matter? How is the role of the pilot changing regarding best safety practices and eliminating human error in an increasingly simplified, digital cockpit? Andre Fodor shares insights… Annual recurrent training is an opportunity to recycle knowledge and skills. An annual review of systems dusts away cobwebs that may have settled over the previous twelve months. More importantly, it serves as a reminder that what’s happening ‘automagically’ behind the instrument panel is dependent on highly advanced aircraft systems and technology. While simulators give pilots the opportunity to toggle switches that otherwise gather dust thanks to the automation and high reliability of today’s cockpit, recurrent training also serves as a priceless opportunity to connect with other pilots and to hear of emerging trends and real-life lessons. Truth be told, it’s hardly surprising that most of these exchanges include mishaps that result from an over-reliance on technology and automation in today’s cockpit. One colleague who flies an older jet relayed a story of the time his crew was on a routine climb to the higher flight levels. The aircraft was hand-flown before the autopilot was engaged at 18,000ft. At that point the crew shifted their focus from scanning the primary instruments to discussing an upcoming trip. A few minutes into their conversation, they were surprised to see the aircraft’s stall warning system activate. Although they responded correctly and regained positive control of the airplane before they reached the stall envelope, to their surprise the autopilot had never captured, and they never procedurally confirmed autopilot engagement. This was a clear violation of procedure and could have yielded a bad outcome. The story also serves to highlight the continued importance of understanding how human factors affect the interface between man and machine. All phases of flight must be considered critical, regardless of how automated the cockpit seems. By developing SOPs (Standard Operational Procedures) that cover the transition of flight states, the levels of automation, and enhancing awareness during different flight phases, you will help enforce a solid interface between pilot and automation. In today’s highly automated and advanced cockpits, we must be vigilant, and be aware of how easily we can disconnect and be distracted from the business of flying the aircraft. It’s also imperative to understand what the aircraft will do when we engage systems. During an LPV/WAAS approach, for example, what are the annunciations that we should expect to see and hear outside the final approach fix, once the glideslope is intercepted? And, if a system malfunctions, or fails to behave as expected, what actions should be taken (either manually or automatically) to correct or abandon the approach?

Avionics & Automation: Staying in the Loop

During a conference held by one major business jet OEM, the concept of ‘Deviation from Normal’ was discussed, and the theme included how much the machine should attempt to manage system malfunctions before sharing with the crew that something is wrong. With monumental computing power already available in the cockpit, and artificial intelligence algorithms emerging that will far out-perform human performance, how should pilots be kept in the loop to manage the processes and systems? This technology could deliver ‘Deviation from Normal’ information as workload permits. For example, does a pilot really need to know that the airplane’s automation sensed a pressurization fault that it can easily correct during a critical approach phase of the flight? Or should the logic manage the fault and tell the pilot what happened after they have landed? It is important for the industry to be thinking about the best ways to strengthen appropriate human interface in the cockpit – particularly today where it’s possible to cross the Atlantic with barely a word spoken on the radio; with redundant triple navigational systems; and with a flight plan constantly uplinked to ATC. The aircraft I fly will autotune the ILS frequency and set the inbound course autonomously. It will also load the Missed Approach Procedure (MAP) and, if I press the correct buttons, it will fly the approach and the MAP without my intervention. Of course, there are steps that I can be taking to make a conscious effort to stay interfaced with the machine. For example, I still set the localizer frequency, the inbound course and minimums manually on the pre-selects. I do so during a complete briefing that includes reviewing the FMS route page to make sure the guidance looks correct. With the potential gross navigational errors reduced to a minimum through automation, however, what are the new risks? As highlighted in our previous example, having a distracted crew with very little to do during a seven-hour international crossing poses a whole new set of challenges.

In Summary…

Though I don’t have the room or all the answers to describe the ways to strengthen and solidify the safe use of modern cockpit technology, what is clear is that a sterile cockpit environment, with reduced distraction and focused awareness, is essential. This will be helped through developing solid procedures that keep us ‘in the loop’ and in charge while technology supports us in our job of flying airplanes with more accuracy and efficiency. Regardless of the avionics, we must always remember who the Pilot in Command is, and act accordingly… ❙

Important Changes to the FAA’s Public Documents Room Procedures

The FAA Civil Aviation Registry has issued several important new procedures affecting the Public Documents Room (PDR) in light of the continued spread and impact of COVID-19, or Coronavirus – possibly affecting the timeliness of aircraft transactions. The change in processes comes in an attempt to minimize exposure to employees, permit-holders who regularly access the PDR, their families and the public at large. There are now temporary, but significant, measures in place to help this endeavor and maintain efficiency at the Registry.

The FAA intends to keep the PDR open and “provide essential services while maintaining social distancing and restricting physical public access.” While the PDR remains open for their usual hours, 7:30 to 4:00 CDT, the “filing” window has been closed, which removes the ability to immediately file documents.

For now, document submissions will be collected from drop boxes located directly outside the PDR. However, all incoming physical documents, including priorities, will be quarantined for 72 hours. During this time, the Registry will not provide “minute-by-minute” filing stamps. Digital submissions are allowed if all closing documents are digitally signed and less than 20 pages. This restriction has been lifted for priority cases – multiple submissions can me made if the file is too large to be accepted at once. Documents can still be mailed via the usual means, but there is now an email option as well. Again, certain requirements must be met: all documents digitally signed, attachments 20 pages or less per document, one aircraft per email, and priority indicator. The FAA has indicated there should be no change in processing timelines of priorities submitted this way. Another notable change is that the FAA cannot guarantee “in by 11 out by COB” expedited processing of documents for imports. There are also changes to payment services, which should now be completed online. These changes have been evolving with the situation and could continue to do so. It may be a while before we fully see the effect they have on document filing and transactions, but there will certainly be some delay while we become accustomed to the new procedures. The FAA continues to try to mitigate transmission of COVID-19 while providing essential services and minimizing negative impacts. While disruptions inevitably continue for industries worldwide, we are encouraged by the actions our leaders and communities are taking to protect our health and help businesses continue to run. Completes “Sniffer” Demonstration

A Schiebel S100 Camcopter has completed a two-day “sniffer” capability test in a shipping lane outside Gniben, Denmark, designed to monitor harmful emissions from shipping. The trial was run by Vienna, Austria-based Schiebel in conjunction with Nordic Unmanned. Ships operating in Europe’s busiest sea routes are permitted to emit exhaust fumes with a sulphur oxide content limited to 0.1 percent under the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) 2020 regulation. Monitoring in support of enforcement takes several forms, including using Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), such as the Camcopter S-100, equipped with a sulphur sniffer which flies through the ship’s exhaust plume to measure the sulphur emissions, and uses its Automatic Identification System (AIS) to identify the ships. “The Camcopter S-100 performed two successful flights of about four hours

during the trial and provided compliant measurements of sulphur emissions,” said Schiebel.

According to Schiebel, the S-100 “can operate by day and by night, under adverse weather conditions, with a beyond line-of-sight capability out to 200km (108nm), over land and sea. “Its carbon-fibre and titanium fuselage provides capacity for a wide range of payload/endurance combinations up to a service ceiling of 5,500m (18,0000ft). A typical payload weighs 34kg (75lbs) for up to 10 hours.” The S-100 is powered with AvGas or JP-5 heavy fuel. Nordic Unmanned is a drone company founded in 2014 and has offices in Stavanger, Oslo and Frankfurt, Germany.

What is a Multi-Mission Aircraft? (Part 1) What are the primary aircraft flown today in Multi-Mission operations, and how do they differ from General Aviation and commercial air transportation platforms? Patrick Ryan explores this question and more in this two-part series. When it comes to which pillar of aviation (General Aviation, Commercial Air Transportation, and MultiMission) utilizes the most types of aircraft in the world, Multi-Mission operations wins hands-down since these have leveraged, and continue to leverage the many different types of aircraft designs or classifications that make-up the entire spectrum of the aircraft world. And with the introduction of unmanned technology and platforms has expanded three-fold the depth and width of Multi-Mission platforms available or used in providing specialized aerial services around the world.

Defining Aircraft and Type Classifications

To answer what a Multi-Mission aircraft is, the following should provide a refresher for some and new information for others. In a simple description, an airplane (manned or unmanned) is a vehicle that can fly by gaining support from the air. It counters the force of gravity by using either static lift or by using the dynamic lift of an airfoil. The primary factors that categorize the different types of aircraft are ‘Heavier-Than-Air’ (Aerodyne) and ‘Lighter-Than-Air’ (Aerostat) aircraft. The next level of classifying is powered and unpowered aircraft. From this point, aircraft designs, technology, and capabilities differ in many different aspects and categories. As you can see on Figure A (right), aircraft types take-on their unique technical characteristics (i.e., from Kite to Balloon; Fixed-Wing to Rotary-Wing, Amphibian, or Float; Propeller Propulsion to Rocket Propulsion; Tethered or Non-Tethered; Manned and Unmanned, and more).

Why are so Many Different Aircraft Types Used in Multi-Mission Operations?

Simple, civil Multi-Mission operations have more diverse tasks than General Aviation and commercial air transportation. Overall, General Aviation and commercial air transportation is primarily focused on transporting people, luggage and cargo from point A to point B. Multi-Mission operations go beyond just transporting, to conducting various specialized dull, dirty and sometimes dangerous data collection or utility task (e.g., Glider Towing, Aerial Mapping and Surveying, Aerial Firefighting, Aerial Lift Services, Flight Training, Aerial Targets, etc.). Because of this, the civil Multi-Mission industry sector is very innovative and adaptable when it comes to matching the right aircraft to a specific task or service. In other words, one size doesn't fit all for this industry sector, and for a good reason. Since the needs and wants of humanity are diverse, physical nature is fluid, and technology is continually changing and resources are not endless, the civil Multi-Mission industry sector has a culture of constantly experimenting with different platforms to fulfill a new or existing need in society, or supporting a specific industry sector with the right level of effort, technology, investment and return. An example of this is Aerial Advertisement.

In the 1930s and with the world fascinated by this new thing called ‘Airplanes’, small fixed-wing aircraft were used to tow banners for advertisement purposes. Over the last 80 years, as different classes of aircraft developed and advertising evolved, Aerial Advertisement expanded to Airships, Kite Balloons, and Rotary Wing aircraft. Today, both manned and unmanned platforms are employed in this business sector to provide Mobile billboards, Banner Towing, Flogos and Skywriting.

As You Can See

Multi-Mission aircraft are in a class of their own. Because there's more to this sector of aviation than just transporting people and luggage, the stakeholders of Multi-Mission aviation have leveraged pretty much every type of aircraft from unmanned tethered balloons to manned highaltitude jet aircraft to accomplish a specific or unique task. The reason for this is that the different types of aircraft used today have different operational and performance capabilities. When it comes to manned and unmanned platforms, the differences can be substantial. Next time, we will continue this series (Pt 2) with a look at what are the general differences between today's manned & unmanned Multi-Mission aircraft?

What is a Multi-Mission Aircraft?

In general, a civil Multi-Mission aircraft is an aircraft used for any specialized service other than General Aviation and Commercial Air Transportation. Centered on Figure A, a Multi-Mission aircraft can be any aircraft, from a Kite with a camera to a Boeing 747 configured with a telescope. Essentially, it all comes down to the intent of the operator, compensation, and how local Civil Aviation Authorities perceive, define, or regulate it. If an aircraft is designed, modified, or just used to accomplish a specific task or service (other than for general transportation or recreation), it can be considered a Multi-Mission aircraft.

Heli Air Limited, the charter subsidiary of British European Aviation (BEA), has launched its innovative “EscapeTime” service after receiving UK CAA approval to add Single Engine Turbine (SET-IMC) operations to its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). This approval becomes the first SET-IMC approval in the UK, and is based on the use of Piper M600 turboprops. EscapeTime fills a niche between other, slower means of transport and the traditional business aircraft market that has tended to start with the Pilatus PC-12. It will be a new business tool and open up business aviation to more people, whether for business or private use. “Utilising the Piper PA-46 M600 single-engine turbine, this CAA approval is the first of its kind in the UK, giving BEA customers the chance to fly in comfort, safety, speed, and at prices never before experienced in the luxury air-charter world,” said Sean Brown, CEO of Booker Airfield (Wycombe Air Park)-based BEA. The M600 is powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42A turboprop engine with Hartzell four-blade constant speed propeller, and typically flies at 28,000 feet and a speed of 275 knots. It has a luxury interior and is equipped with a Garmin G3000 avionics suite, giving pilots a high level of situational awareness. With a range of 1,209 nautical miles and a pressurised cabin, passengers and crew do not have to use oxygen at high altitudes. “At last, business users can enjoy the true benefits of private air charter at a reasonable cost without a reduction in comfort, quality or safety,” said Brown, adding, “the luxurious cabin has ample leg room and its large windows give passengers an excellent view.” He said EscapeTime’s aircraft can, for example, take four or five passengers from London Wycombe Air Park to Paris in under an hour — and for as little as £599 each. “The service cuts out hours of waiting at major airports and is offered to hundreds of destinations around the UK and Europe.” With EscapeTime, customers buy a number of hours up-front.

In March 2017, EASA brought in the new SET-IMC rules to bring it into line with other countries that allow commercial flights with such aircraft. However it imposed certain strict requirements to ensure safety as many of the flights would be in poor weather and sometimes also at night. BEA was already the exclusive Piper dealer in the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands, and already had a charter operator, Heliair. The Piper M600 was identified as the highest quality, best value, single engine turbine aircraft available for SET-IMC charter, said Brown, as it formulated plans for EscapeTime. “The launch of the SET-IMC operations is a revolution in General Aviation and coincides with the launch of the CAA fly legal campaign,” said Brown. “The BEA Heli Air team has been working with the CAA for three years to ensure the safety and quality standards required for AOC operations are exceeded prior to the issue of the AOC.” New, an M600 costs $2.9 million with BEA providing all the required training — BEA plans to offer sale-and-leaseback deals to potential M600 owners so it can build the EscapeTime service. The company has a long lease on its home airfield, where it has added a new lounge dedicated to private customers using the service.

SUN-AIR Aviation Group, a franchise carrier for British Airways based in Denmark, has selected a Garmin ADS-B solution for its fleet of 18 Dornier 328JET aircraft. Garmin says it now offers a “plug and play” installation kit provided by its certification partner, Scandinavian Avionics. An EASA STC approval for the solution was obtained earlier this year covering both the Dornier 328 turboprop and Dornier 328JET. “This cost-effective Garmin ADS-B upgrade provides operators with an economical solution for complying with the ADS-B mandate in Europe,” said the US company. Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president aviation sales and marketing, said: “We are thrilled to provide SUN-AIR with a technology solution that is cost-effective, easy to install and keeps them flying so they can continue to serve their valued customers.” The ADS-B upgrade for the Dornier 328 is comprised of a pair of GTX 3000 ADS-B transponders and a GPS 3000, a high-integrity SBAS/WAAS position source, and a complete installation kit comprised of a pre-wired shelf, wire harness and consumption material. Garmin says the solution is designed to easily interface to existing equipment on board the aircraft, reducing installation time and lowering the overall cost of compliance. “Together, the GTX 3000 and GPS 3000 serve as a rugged, standalone ADS-B Out solution that meets the stringent demands of transport category aircraft around the globe,” it adds.

The aircraft sold to the USA is a twinengine turboprop aircraft with a pressurised cabin. With a range of 2,334 km, the King Air C90 is designed to carry 6-8 passengers. The turboprop was transferred last week by flying from Germany via Scotland, Iceland, Greenland, Canada to Tampa in USA.

Such companies handle the title work as well as the funds and filings at the FAA, while acting as an intermediary to the buyer and seller, ensuring funds and document transfers are handled per a fully executed and verified aircraft purchase and sale agreement. You are unequivocably advised to use a well-vetted escrow company that your aircraft broker and legal team can agree on. Anything less than that, however, would carry huge amounts of risk. Following are some tips for you to keep in mind when working with an escrow agent. While we cannot cover every angle within the scope of this article, the following should provide guidance on how business aircraft brokers and aviation attorneys will work with the escrow agent to manage your risk and protect your interests.

Escrow Agreements: Verify the Policy

The escrow company should have a standard procedure in place (and verified) that all deposits remain refundable to the depositor unless notified otherwise. Notification should be in writing or with a signed aircraft purchase and sale agreement. While it is good to verify this policy before sending a deposit, you should also consider adding a consent and joinder, tying the escrow agent directly into the purchase and sales agreement. This extra step will often secure the deposit more closely, especially when there are multiple parties to a transaction or an intermediary is involved in the contracting, and the deposits need to be clearly tied from one end of the deal to the other.

Escrow Funds: Look out for Scams!

Never pay upfront for escrow fees. There was a time when a Nigerian company set up a fake escrow to induce sellers to agree to sell at a price using the escrow in the UK. The catch was that the seller had to pay up-front fees to open escrow before the buyer would send funds. Don’t fall for it! As stated above, many international buyers and sellers turn to Oklahoma City escrow agents for funds management. Additional security considerations, such as hacking, can be mitigated by using an escrow agreement whereby the agent verifies all wire instructions by telephone prior to sending. Hackers are gaining access to more emails lately, and have been known to wait until the last minute to send an email from the victim’s own email address issuing a change in wire instructions. One final consideration is corruption, and specifically the ‘Know Your Customer’ procedure. The end parties in a transaction are often unable to vet the customers to the level that the Federal banking system will. While an escrow company is not a guaranteed security blanket it certainly helps to have another link in the wire transfer chain, where the escrow bank and the Federation will help act as a barrier to prevent funds moving to or from questionable sources.

Escrow agents are high volume and don’t work as any one party’s agent. The best escrow companies will move large volumes and have exceptional experience and efficient processes that help your transaction go smoothly. But you have to be on your game, too. As highlighted above, you need to take care when working with the best escrow agents to make sure that your transaction is protected from start to finish. Escrow: What are the International Considerations?

Buyers and sellers based in the United States or the European Union are subject to liens in Ireland. There are currently 72 states which agreed to the International Registry of Mobile Assets in Dublin, Ireland taking precedent over the FAA (or other local) lien registry. The title company will check the International Registry and make any filings, if needed, in addition to those at the FAA. It is noteworthy that many international transactions will still use an Oklahoma City-based escrow for funds, even where both parties are from outside the US.

Mark Gascoigne, managing director Europe Air for Gama, said the spare aircraft would be used for “other roles” such as windfarm support and VVIP work, while it has also been speaking to other HEMS operators, and is open to managing helicopters for corporations and private individuals. GAMA has had the Scottish contract for some years and has been running the fixed wing element using King Airs. The contract with NHS Scotland stipulated that it used H145s so there was no new selection process, and Gascoigne said there is another three years to run on the current contract.

Organisers of the European Rotors show due to be held 10-12 November in Cologne believe it is already shaping up, some seven months before it takes place, to become an important event in the aviation calendar. “Numerous companies and institutions have already committed to participate in the first edition of European Rotors,” stated organiser, the European Helicopter Association (EHA). Around 300 exhibitors from all over the world are expected to be present in Hall 8 of Koelnmesse, in Cologne, Germany. “The positive response is an answer to the pooled forces of the organiser, EHA, together with EASA, as they have come up with an entirely new concept: a platform that combines a leading international trade fair with a unique conference and training programme,” said EHA, “including the EASA Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium as one of its highlights.” Registrations have already come from market leaders and major players within the industry, such as Airbus, Bell, Leonardo Helicopters, Safran Helicopter Engines, Kopter, Robinson Helicopter Company supported by Heli-Flight , Boeing Global Services, Pratt & Whitney Canada Corp., H+S Aviation Limited, Heli One, JSSI, Skytrac Systems, Autoflug GmbH and many more. “A lot has happened since we announced our event at the beginning of the year,” explained EHA chairman Peter Möller. “We are receiving a very positive response from the industry. The quality and international character of the exhibitors demonstrates the relevance of the new platform.” EHA believes its new event will become “the international meeting place for the rotorcraft community, where content is created, relationships promoted, enthusiasm aroused and growth potential

identified.” It adds the new concept should offer added value to all market participants — “from students and start-ups, via medium-sized companies, all the way up to global brands.”The major aim of the annually held platform is to bring together the entire helicopter industry and its subsectors as well as the various stakeholders.” It believes the show will appeal to the whole diversity of VTOL operations, ranging from HEMS/SAR, law enforcement/public security, disaster relief/firefighting, via passenger transport and offshore construction/offshore energy through to smart city/urban air mobility and new technology & innovation. Another key constituent of the three-day trade show is the additional strong focus on a comprehensive programme of training and education, with a unique programme tailored to the needs of the VTOL operators being put together. It will include safety promotion, best practice workshops and technical briefings provided by the OEMs. Integration of EASA know-how, in particular, will boost the line-up. David Solar, head of the VTOL Department at EASA, elaborates: “The EASA Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium will reach a new stage in its developments thanks to the dynamic created around European Rotors. The benefits of having joined forces to create a bigger event are becoming apparent. The Agency is now taking European Rotors as a deadline to progress its activity and make announcements to its stakeholders on the latest regulatory changes. “The well-known EASA Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium will be re-shaped in 2020 to enable participants to attend the EASA conference but also have time to join one of the numerous training sessions and seminars proposed and to see the latest rotorcraft and VTOL developments on stage.”

European Rotors, The VTOL Show and the Safety Conference will take place from 10 to 12 November 2020 (Tuesday to Thursday) in Hall 8 at Congress Centre North of Koelnmesse, in Cologne, Germany.
