Airborne Technologies‘ Flying Laboratory – Behind the Scenes
What is needed to transform an AS350 into a real multi-talent, optimized for powerline & pipeline inspection?
EXPERTS FROM ALL BACKGROUNDS UNDER ONE ROOF
EXTENSIVE FLIGHT TESTING
PROFOUND INTERVENTIONS INTO THE AIRBORNE PLATFORM
EASA CERTIFIED INTEGRATION SPECIALIST
Meanwhile the integration of special equipment into the different platforms goes far beyond a simple installation of sensors. The complexity of systems and customer requirements makes it increasingly necessary to intervene in all areas.
Not only are the manufacturers allowed to make radical changes to an aircraft. As an EASA Part 21 Subpart J certified Design and Production Organisation, Airborne Technologies is certified to modify an airframe from nose-to-tail without extensive coordination and approvals with OEMs.
FROM COMPUTER ADDED DESIGN…
…TO CNC MILLING…
…TO THE FINAL COMPONENT
Airborne Technologies focuses in their design philosophy on aspects such as ergonomic design and mission flexibility – while always meeting EASA certification standards.
Both the mold construction and the production of the final carbon fiber components are carried out in their in-house Composite Workshop.
Airborne Technologies’ Engineers integrate the mission required sensors – from Surveying Equipment to complete Surveillance Systems (Airborne LINX)
Three outside mounts require extensive Flight tests to determine performance changes and handling characteristics. Airborne Technologies performs these tests with their in-house EASA certified test-pilots.
The team of Airborne Technologies’ experts has a multi-discipline aviation and system engineering background providing the basis for best value-for-money results for the customer. Since all production stages are accomplished in-house, the customers benefit from the flexibility and the ability to meet tight schedules.

Preparations for the EUROPEAN ROTORS are on track This year's EUROPEAN ROTORS (November 10 to 12, 2020) in Cologne will be one of the few trade shows that takes place in real life and not just online, on the Internet. A hygiene and protection concept will ensure the safety of visitors. The extensive trade fair and conference programme is tailored to the sector and will bring together manufacturers, industry and regulators. "We are pleased to have many established manufacturers on board — including Airbus, Bell, Leonardo, Robinson, Safran and Volocopter, as well as numerous important suppliers such as, for example, Boeing Global Services, L3 Wescam and Reiser Simulation," says Frank Liemandt, Show Director of EUROPEAN ROTORS, about the status of preparations for the new show, which will take place in Cologne from November 10 to 12. Since the event is a trade fair and not a so-called “major event”, the organisers are convinced that it will take place despite the coronavirus crisis. They are in continuous contact with the relevant authorities and, together with the venue Koelnmesse, have drawn up a comprehensive hygiene and protection concept based on the specifications of the state of North RhineWestphalia, which applies to all participants of the event. This includes, among other things, complete online visitor pre-registration, increased cleaning intervals, and compulsory masks in the aisles. Since almost all international aviation events have been cancelled this year, EUROPEAN ROTORS offers one of the few opportunities for the industry to meet and exchange ideas. Although no visitors from the United States are expected due to travel restrictions resulting from the Corona crisis, the organisers EHA (European Helicopter Association) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) and Messe Friedrichshafen, expect important industry participants from Europe to attend in Cologne. "EUROPEAN ROTORS will therefore be one of the few B2B aviation trade fairs in 2020 to take place in real terms," says Tobias Bretzel, Project Manager of Messe
Friedrichshafen. “At this stage, we have the commitment of around 100 exhibitors, a quite satisfying number for an event launching under these circumstances.” The main topics of the trade fair include the EASA Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium, but the exchange on current industry topics will include the effects of Covid-19, challenges in fire-fighting by helicopter, along with innovation and technology. Additional best practice seminars will also be attractive for trade visitors. Helicopters play an ever-increasingly important role in society and the economy, whether as rescue helicopters, as an extended arm of the fire departments in forest and area fires, for monitoring pipelines and power lines, as an individual personal transport vehicle, or as a police helicopter. Drones are increasingly complementing helicopters and are a future market that EUROPEAN ROTORS also serves. As part of the recruitment of young talent for the industry, a Rotorthon will take place during EUROPEAN ROTORS. This goes back to an idea of the European student association EUROAVIA. On all three days of the fair, two topics will be presented by Airbus and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Six selected teams of students from EUROAVIA's partner universities will then tackle these topics and work out solutions. On the last day of the fair the results will be presented to a jury and a winner will be chosen for each topic.
EUROPEAN ROTORS is organised by the European Helicopter Association in cooperation with EASA, which will focus on all aviation safety aspects, with the full support of the leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), such as Airbus, Bell, Leonardo and Safran. Messe Friedrichshafen, the organiser of the well-
known general aviation show AERO Friedrichshafen, is the service provider of this new show. EUROPEAN ROTORS The VTOL Show and Safety Conference will
take place from 10 to 12 November 2020 (Tuesday to Thursday). The venue will be Hall 8 of the North Congress Centre of Koelnmesse, in Cologne, Germany.

Skilling the Rotorcraft Community Friedrichshafen/Cologne – With the rotary wing sector gathering at EUROPEAN ROTORS (November 10 – 12, 2020 in Cologne, Germany), the aim of this high-level industry event is to set a new standard of networking, discussing and developing the skills of the rotorcraft community incorporating the challenges the industry is facing due to Covid-19. The concept of EUROPEAN ROTORS envisions a unique conference, training and workshop agenda alongside the trade show, in order to offer visitors strong insights. One of the highlights of the event is the well-established Rotorcraft and VTOL Symposium, held by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The symposium is designed to be the premier platform for European helicopter operators and the industry to jointly discuss current and future challenges with the European regulator. The integration into EUROPEAN ROTORS will allow EASA to expand its audience welcome and reach out to new entities within the rotorcraft industry. Registration is possible via EUROPEAN ROTORS website.
Euroavia to host “Rotorthon”
The European student association Euroavia teams up with the event organisers, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) and EASA, to host for the first time a “Rotorthon”. Throughout the three show days, the Rotorthon will gather aviation students to brainstorm over two rotorcraft topics, which will range from design and infrastructure to airspace organisation. Six teams of students will be challenged to find answers and/or ready-to-go solutions to be presented to a dedicated jury, on the last day of the trade show. “We think that our industry needs new and fresh ideas to keep up with the future”, said Peter Moeller, Chairman of EHA. “We are facing many challenges in the VTOL and rotorcraft sector, from integrating a complete new user group into the airspace up to questions on next generation designs.
It will be interesting to see how young talents will find answers to certain questions”, adds David Solar, head of the VTOL department of EASA.
Conference Programme focusing on Flight Safety, Innovation, Covid-19 impact and recovery assessment
EUROPEAN ROTORS also gives an overview on the latest developments, products and best practices of the rotorcraft sector: Airbus, Bell, Leonardo and others will share news and important information during dedicated customer briefings. Additionally, confirmed conference highlights are: • Covid-19 impact and recovery • industry panels on rotorcraft and urban air mobility trends • an innovation day focusing on Swiss topics • a Police Aviation Conference Europe (PavCon) • a PBN/IFR workshop for operators For the first time in Europe, visitors can take the opportunity to join an aviation trade show and book training courses, with certificates handed out after completion. Highly renowned organisations, such as Aerossurance, AECA, Leocopter and EASA, will offer a great bandwidth of subjects for pilots, engineers, and technicians. The topics include, but are not limited to, firefighting, data management, and human factors. “We are really proud to offer this comprehensive conference programme, especially the opportunity to profit from educational lessons provided by high class professionals, which is really unique in Europe,” said Dr. Frank Liemandt, Show Director of EUROPEAN ROTORS. “Having this variety of conference topics confirmed at such an early stage shows the high interest of the entire rotorcraft community and their will to engage,” added Tobias Bretzel, Project Manager of the show.

aving emerged from the busiest period in our 30-year history, which saw us complete nearly 800 hours of flying on mostly medevac missions, the charter business at FAI rent-a-jet in April was unusually (though understandably) quiet.
H
Our air ambulance division was operating at maximum capacity and averaging around six missions per day. We worked hard to fulfil all the requests coming in for repatriation and medevac flights as rapidly and as efficiently as we could. The good news is that since the beginning of July we are now witnessing something of a resurgence in demand for charter. The demand is still very limited to European traffic as the quarantine rules lift, and though we are certainly not up to pre-COVID levels it has nevertheless been encouraging. This trend has been mirrored throughout the industry (for private charter) and particularly in Europe as the recovery continues, albeit ‘bumpily’. Unfortunately, long-haul flights are still rare in conjunction with the lockdown that’s still active in the Americas and in many countries of the African continent.
an airport of their choice anywhere in the world directly to an airport closest to their chosen embarkation port in Greece or the Eastern Mediterranean.
Three Core Drivers
For similar reasons it should be no surprise that new customers are turning to Business Aviation for the first time too. However, there are three drivers that I believe are going to dominate travel patterns from now on, including: • • •
Safety and air travel (linked to the fear of infection); Moral considerations of private charter (viewed in the context of furloughed employees or those working on reduced hours); and Sustainability.
The big question that will be asked is whether a business flight is really essential. This is the year when I believe we will all become more responsible with our travel decisions. The airlines will be much slower to recover than Business Aviation, meaning that Business Aviation has a key role to play in the global recovery. All the airlines will be much smaller than they were, and Business Aviation can help bring money into the economies and help safeguard vital aviation jobs.
Over the summer months customers who can afford it have chosen private aviation for leisure travel to holiday destinations such as Spain, Greece and Croatia. Typically, they wish to start and finish their holiday in a safe and secure environment away from the big hub airports and within a protected aircraft cabin environment. That, of course, is the DNA of private aviation.
Only time will tell how the rest of 2020 pans out, but we are optimistic. We’re looking forward to welcoming more new market entrants as an increasing number of customers prefer to travel privately, realizing the huge benefits of doing so.
Our recent collaboration with Atalanta Golden Yachts to provide luxury VIP air charter services is a natural enhancement to our charter offering for HNWIs, enabling yacht charter to fly privately from
We stand ready to meet demand across the globe. As we start to emerge from the crisis of the last six months, there is much to be thankful for. More information from www.fai.ag ❙
Siegfried Axtmann is the founder and chairman of FAI Aviation Group, which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year. With its eye on the future, the company recently acquired a second Beechcraft Premier 1A on behalf of a corporate client which entered charter operations in July, taking the FAI fleet to 27 jets. The company became a Honeywell Channel Partner in July, and its long-term collaboration with McLaren Racing continues (FAI is an exclusive supplier, providing business jet flights for McLaren drivers and management). The R66 Turbine Marine delivers the same power and performance as a standard R66 but with inflatable pop-outs floats for overwater travel.
R66 Turbine 1060 TXi instrument console with Garmin GTN 750Xi and SAS/Autopilot.
In July, Robinson delivered its 1000th R66 Turbine helicopter. A significant milestone that demonstrates the R66 is the top performer and leader in its class. Powered by the Rolls Royce RR300 turbine engine, the R66 recently surpassed 1. 2 million flight hours without a single reported in-flight engine failure. This accomplishment demonstrates a level of reliability that exceeds EASA’s stringent requirements for single-engine helicopters. A derivative of the Alison 250 series, the RR300 features a simplified single-stage centrifugal compressor for high reliability and less maintenance. The engine burns Jet A fuel, at a rate of approximately 23 U.S. gallons (87 liters) per hour. In 2007, Frank Robinson announced the R66 after a deal was struck with Rolls Royce to develop the RR300 engine. The R66 was FAA certified in October 2010 and the first production R66 was delivered the following month. Since then, the R66 has proven itself on a daily basis and has risen to the challenges of flying to the North Pole and circumnavigating the globe multiple times. S/N 1000 was delivered to Robinson dealer Les Gillespie of Gardner Aviation. When asked about the R66, Gillespie said, “Because the R66 can be configured to meet the needs of any pilot or helicopter flight department, it quickly became our number-one selling helicopter.” Today’s R66 is also available in police, news, and float configurations. Options include air conditioning, cargo hook, lithium-ion battery, fuel flow system, auxiliary fuel tanks, impact resistance windshields, state-of-the-art touchscreen avionics, and a SAS/autopilot, making it a multipurpose helicopter suitable for private and commercial applications.
Small auxiliary tank installed in the R66’s baggage compartment.
R66 Impact-resistant windshield
Touchscreen Avionics & SAS Autopilot
The R66 is available with Garmin’s latest TXi displays and GPS/COM/NAV GTN Xi navigators. Genesys HeliSAS autopilot is also an option offering heading hold, altitude hold, navigation signal tracking, and approach guidance.
Auxiliary Fuel Tanks
Two sizes, large and small, of auxiliary fuel tanks are offered. The small fuel tank holds 23.2 gallons (88 liters), adds approximately 1 hour to helicopter endurance, and extends its range by as much as 100 nautical miles (115 statute miles). The large tank holds 43-gallons, adds approximately 2 hours to helicopter endurance, and extends the helicopter’s range by as much as 200 nautical miles (230 statute miles).
Impact-Resistant Windshields
R66 Impact-resistant windshields provide protection from bird strikes.
Cargo Hook
The cargo hook carries external loads up to 1200 lb and, for external load operations, the R66’s maximum gross weight increases from 2700 lb to 2900 lb. The cargo hook installation includes right and left-seat controls, allowing for solo flight from either seat.

H145
Airbus Helicopters’ dynamic new duo Just two weeks apart in the middle of this year EASA certified two new helicopters from Airbus that have been eagerly awaited by operators including a string of already committed customers. First, on 19 June, the new H145 light-twin with five rotor blades (instead of the four installed until now) was certified, laying the ground for customer deliveries to begin in the third quarter of the year. Then, on 1 July, the much anticipated H160 received its European type certificate with US approval to follow quickly ready for the first delivery to an unidentified North American customer towards the end of 2020.
H145
The certification of the new H145 covers the full range of capabilities, including single-pilot and instrument flight rules (IFR) and single engine operations (Cat.A/VTOL), along with night vision goggles capability. It was unveiled at Heli-Expo 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, immediately securing customers across the market including emergency medical services (HEMS), private and business aviation (PBA), and law enforcement.
The new H145 introduces new levels of on-board connectivity to customers and operators through the integration of the wireless Airborne Communication System (wACS), allowing seamless and secure transmission of data generated by the helicopter in real-time, including in-flight. The new rotor system is offered to current H145 customers as a retrofit option in order to deliver the same improvements in terms of useful load, simplified maintenance, and comfort to the existing version of the H145. A number of customers, notably in the HEMS and rescue sectors, have already committed to that option. In the PBA sector the new H145 has already attracted keen interest. It was launched with an order for Airbus Corporate Helicopters’ ACH145 from Advanced Flight of New Zealand and will also be the helicopter on the world’s longest superyacht – the REV Ocean research and expedition vessel – when delivered next year.
H145
The design concept was to add genuinely value-added features to a tried and tested model that has long been a market leader. It increases the useful load of the helicopter by 150kg/330lb – effectively making the useful load equal to the empty weight – and the simplicity of the new bearingless main rotor design will also ease maintenance operations, further improving serviceability and reliability. The rotor diameter and Dfactor are slightly smaller than the previous model. At the same time ride comfort for both passengers and crew is enhanced, as already commented on by customers who have flown in it. Externally its particularly low acoustic footprint makes the H145 the quietest helicopter in its class. Powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines, the H145 is equipped with full authority digital engine control (FADEC) and the Helionix digital avionics suite. It includes a high performance 4-axis autopilot, increasing safety and reducing pilot workload.

H160
H160
Hot on the heels of the five-blade H145 certification came EASA approval of the all-new H160, unquestionably one of the world’s most technologically advanced helicopters with 68 dedicated patents addressing areas such as safety, environmental friendliness and comfort. By the time of certification the H160 prototypes had already clocked 1,500 hours and 300 hours of endurance testing, helping to maximise maturity at entry into service. An extensive programme of demonstration flights has let customers experience the innovation and added value that it brings to operations. Designed as a multi-role helicopter able to perform a wide range of missions such as offshore transportation, emergency medical services, private and business aviation, and public services, the H160 integrates Airbus Helicopters’ latest technological developments. These include breakthrough safety features with Helionix’s accrued pilot assistance and automated features as well as flight envelope protection. The helicopter also provides passengers with superior comfort thanks to the soundreducing Blue Edge blades and superb external visibility that benefits both passengers and pilots. The H160 was not just designed with passengers and pilots in mind. Operators will appreciate its competiveness thanks to its increased fuel
H160
efficiency and customer-centric simplified maintenance ecosystem. Equipment accessibility is facilitated by the helicopter’s optimised architecture; the maintenance plan was thoroughly verified during the Operator Zero campaigns; and it is delivered with intuitive 3D maintenance documentation. Key features include the Safran Arrano 1A engines in their first application cutting fuel burn by up to 15% – the large canted Fenestron tail and biplane stabiliser (reducing required power and noise), and the highly advanced autopilot with its recovery mode button designed to aid pilots in the most difficult circumstances. Performance-wise the H160 offers a MTOW of 6,050kg, range of up to 850km/460nm, endurance of up to 4h 30 min, and a maximum cruise speed of 155kt. The H160 has already accrued a range of civil and military customers and has made strong progress in the PBA sector where the ACH160 variant is selling well. A recent booking from Italy bolstered an orderbook which now features customers in eight countries across North America, Latin America, Europe, China and South-East Asia. Passenger configurations vary from six seats to a maximum of ten. Customers in this market sector particularly value the 20% greater volume per passenger compared to previous generation medium-twin helicopters and 35% larger windows than its competitors, resulting in the brightest cabin in its class. The ACH160’s advanced air conditioning technology allows precise temperature control and optimal cabin air quality with highly efficient air exchange. In the ACH160 Exclusive version, mood lighting contributes to reduced fatigue. Frederic Lemos, Head of ACH, said: “This new order from a highly knowledgeable ACH customer in Italy is yet more evidence of the strong welcome being received by the ACH160 in this demanding sector even at a notably challenging time for the helicopter market.”

LUX OCT20.qxp_Layout 1 07/09/2020 12:05 Page 1
Three reasons why every owner needs helicopter management By Charlotte Pedersen, CEO, Luxaviation Helicopters
Helicopters are all about making life easier and more convenient. Whether it’s Elon Musk using a helicopter to investigate a potential UK site for a Tesla factory; a rescue team airlifting an injured hiker to hospital; or a construction team transporting parts across difficult terrain, the helicopter is often the fastest, safest and most efficient travel option. But the management of these assets is anything but easy. With extensive regulations that vary across regions, specialist helicopter crew required in transit, and very different maintenance requirements from fixed-wing aircraft, it’s a niche area. If you don’t have the necessary expertise, it’s very easy to fall into financial and regulatory traps. This year, we’ve seen the challenge of proper helicopter management compounded by the demands of Covid-19. Here, we share three reasons why helicopter management has never been more valuable.
1 Finding a route through quarantines With myriad quarantine restrictions in place, moving crew and rotorcraft to the places where they’re needed has been difficult. You need a management company with global connections to manoeuvre these restrictions and find a solution. For example, one of our operators – Starspeed, based in the UK – has had to take dramatic steps to ensure it can fulfil journey requests, with measures ranging from quarantining crew members for up to four weeks at a time, to using Antonov cargo aircraft to move helicopters.
While we’ve all had to get up to speed on these new requirements, even under normal circumstances helicopter operations are subject to complex regulations – so much so that, if you own a larger helicopter, the regulatory body requires the machine to be managed by a professional aviation company. As an owner, this means either establishing an organisation yourself, or approaching a management company with experience in your model. Management has a fixed cost based on rotorcraft type, hours flown and location, but it’s typically much lower than if an individual tried to do it themselves, as the economies of scale available through a large organisation can result in significant cost savings. With an area as fraught with regulations as helicopter management, it all comes down to knowledge and experience. This is especially clear in specialised environments, such as when you combine helicopter and maritime operations. Flying helicopters from yacht decks is a surprisingly common requirement, particularly during the European summer season. But very few companies have expertise in these areas together or can provide their services globally – which is important,
3 The experience to stay in the air Overall utilisation has dropped since lockdown: business travellers are prevented from flying due to corporate policies, and even medical helicopters have flown less, as there have been fewer accidents. But while activity has lessened, owners still want their helicopters to be available nearby, so they can fly at short notice. For those at a higher risk from the infection, the lower touchpoints and end-to-end capabilities of a helicopter flight mean that, if owners do need to travel, they can do so and remain in their own private ‘bubble’.
At Luxaviation Helicopters, our decades of experience ensure we’re ready to respond during difficult times. For those that are new to helicopter ownership, operation or management, we provide consulting services, giving expert advice to governments; medevac and search and rescue operators; corporate developers; heli-toyacht buyers; as well as supporting pre-buy inspections for helicopters.
2 Keeping up with regulations

Some owners bring in a helicopter business like ours at the very start of designing their new yacht, so we can advise on how to maximise the space for their rotorcraft. Retrofitting yachts to carry a helipad is also becoming a popular request, as owners seek the ultimate end-to-end travel experience.
For this reason, it’s critical that your management company has the experience to keep your helicopter operational. This means scheduling maintenance and transporting the helicopter to the relevant site on your behalf, so the machine is in prime condition for when you’re ready to use it. And, as noted with Starspeed, it’s also about keeping crew safe and well, so your trip isn’t put at risk – even if that means quarantining in different countries, away from families and friends.
The ability to act globally in times like these is critical. We launched the world’s first ever global helicopter charter alliance last year, with nine members (three of our own helicopter companies and six external partners), totalling more than 100 helicopters across Europe, North America, South Africa, Mexico and the Philippines. We’ve been able to draw on local market intelligence in each region, giving us a ‘boots on the ground’ approach to helicopter advice and management. This ability has proven invaluable during the pandemic, as quarantine restrictions in each region have been changing rapidly.
Along with quarantine restrictions, Covid-19 has ushered in a host of regulatory issues, including social distancing; personal protective equipment for crew; and a higher level of on-board sanitisation.
as many owners tour their yachts between multiple destinations and continents each year.

While our industry is facing the same challenges as many other travel businesses, we’re confident that the renewed interest in private flight options will benefit this niche market for years to come. Secure, end-to-end travel has never been more attractive – and whether you’re new to helicopter ownership, or a veteran flier, it’s never been a better time to engage an expert helicopter management company. Boeing’s USM Expansion Includes Airbus AS350 B2 Helicopter Boeing began the journey to expand product offerings to the commercial helicopter community with the acquisition of Aviall, now Boeing, in 2006. The Boeing team has had a long history of supporting the helicopter community with various distribution agreements, including the Rolls Royce Model 250 engine, exterior lighting, replacement windows, ground support equipment, and many others, for a wide variety of helicopter makes and models. That support has continued to grow with the acquisition of KLX (now Boeing Distribution Services Inc) which expands additional product offerings to include hundreds of consumable items.
Aftermarket Services Expertise By providing a focus on aftermarket services, such as used serviceable material (USM), Boeing is bringing its extensive expertise and worldwide reach to locate the best possible aircraft for purchase and teardown. These efforts provide Boeing customers with cost effective solutions during these challenging times. Operators can also rest assured that the aircraft and components selected by Boeing are of the highest quality possible as each item is thoroughly reviewed, inspected and certified per Boeing’s rigorous Quality Program. The volume of inventory, through acquiring and tearing down the entire helicopter, and the global reach of Boeing’s distribution network allows this program to supply convenient and cost-efficient alternatives as well as brand-new parts for multiple operators in the business and general aviation market. Currently, Boeing has USM inventory located in several global locations to meet the urgent needs of our customers. Boeing’s USM capability is an example of the depth and breadth of the services it provides, even for customers who do not own Boeing aircraft. The company is committed to providing support for global helicopter operators, and ensuring they have the parts when and where they need them.
With the recent expansion of its USM capability to include the Airbus AS350 B2 helicopter, Boeing’s services business provides dynamic components, engines, airframe items, blades and avionics for worldwide fleets of this platform. The multipurpose, single-engine AS350 B2 has a long life expectancy and sizeable global fleets providing significant service opportunity for customers over their platform’s lifecycle. In addition to having inventory available for outright sale to AS350 B2 customers, Boeing offers a wide range of exchange options not only for the dynamic components, avionics and airframe related items, but for the Safran Arriel 1D1 engine as well. Boeing’s support for the Arriel 1D1 engine includes complete engines, modules and accessories.
L An AS350 stripped just before removal of rotor blades and main gear section.
USM – A Natural Extension of Boeing Business Boeing announced in 2019 it would enter the USM market as a natural extension of being a manufacturer and service provider. It began the program with many offerings from the Bell Helicopter models, including major drive train components, avionics and airframe items for the B206, B407, B212 and B412. Based on the success of those programs and overall customer demand, Boeing expanded into the AS350 B2 platform. It continues to evaluate future platforms to be used for parts supply and fleet support as a part of its one-stop-shop services model. Boeing continues to acquire parts for the USM Program through multiple avenues including teardowns, consignment and brokering. Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company and leading provider of commercial airplanes, defense, space and security systems, and global services. As the top U.S. exporter, the company supports commercial and government customers in more than 150 countries. Boeing employs more than 150,000 people worldwide and leverages the talents of a global supplier base. Building on a legacy of aerospace leadership, Boeing continues to lead in technology and innovation, deliver for its customers and invest in its people and future growth.
L The rotor blades have been removed and also large parts of the fuselage have been dismantled.
L The Safran Arriel 1D1 engine will be inspected for overhaul.

Many operators hesitate at the prospect of upgrading a helicopter to LED lighting, primarily due to the additional STC costs and associated bureaucracy. So, you have been thinking of upgrading your helicopter to LED lighting, but have previously been put off by the STC expense and associated bureaucracy? Bell Goes Above and Beyond Thinking above and beyond is what we do. For more than 85 years, we’ve been reimagining the experience of flight – and where it can take us. We are pioneers. We
were the first to break the sound barrier and to certify a commercial helicopter. We were
a part of NASA’s first lunar mission and brought advanced tiltrotor systems to market.
These unique aircraft lift like a helicopter, then fly like an airplane with twice the speed, three times the payload and five times the range of traditional helicopters. Global Company, Defining the Future Bell has delivered more than 35,000 aircraft to our customers around the world. Today, we’re defining the future of on-demand mobility. Above all, our breakthrough innovations deliver exceptional experiences to our customers. Efficiently. Reliably. And always, with safety at the forefront. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas – as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Textron Inc., – we have strategic locations around the globe. At each location, we design, build and promote a diverse array of products that enable our customers to increase business efficiency with reliable transportation, maintain peace in local and dangerous territories and experience flight in a unique and unforgettable way. Our commercial rotorcraft continue to support customers with many dynamic missions. Through corporate trips, cargo movement, offshore transportation, utility missions and more, our Bell helicopters are up to the job. As the largest commercial helicopter with incredibly advanced features, the Bell 525 never fails to impress. This aircraft integrates

Fly-By-Wire technology, allowing it to seamlessly react to any environment with decreased pilot workload. Our Bell 429, SUBARU BELL 412EPX and Bell 407GXi still attract interest in a variety of business sectors. Finally, the Bell 505, the new short light single aircraft, can perform para-public and HEMS missions at half of the cost. At Bell, we have an extensive portfolio of capable platforms that customers respect. We’re focused on the future of vertical lift, a revolutionary U.S. Army program that will elevate warfighter aviation. Combining unparalleled maneuverability with unmatched speed, range and payload capabilities, the Bell V-280 Valor is the solution for the U.S. Army-led Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstrator. To support the U.S. Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) program, our teams have committed to a develop a flying prototype – the Bell 360 Invictus. This future forward attack and reconnaissance aircraft will give every team a competitive advantage on the battlefield. How do Aerial Work Aviation Helicopters Keep You Energised?
By Patrick Ryan Have you ever wondered how electric companies ensure every massive high-voltage electrical towers & lines are safe and providing energy? Patrick Ryan "Turns-on-the-lights" regarding how Aerial Work manned helicopters and their aircrews are a critical component of ensuring that the utility industry provides reliable energy around the clock! The helicopter is probably the number one platform that ensures power is delivered during "Peak-Times" and after "Natural Disasters." With thousands upon thousands of miles of high-voltage transmission lines covering the earth, the more traditional ground methods of powerline inspections, surveys, and repair are proving to be both slow and costly.
What is Aerial Powerline Inspection & Repair?
The book answer is aerial powerline inspection, and repair is the routine process of using aircraft (manned and unmanned) to assess and mend powerline poles, towers, cables, and more. Because Mother Nature likes to wear & tear both natural and man-made objects, it's ever more critical that utility companies and organisations track and repair the condition of every part of their naturally exposed infrastructure to ensure "the lights stay on."
To emphasise the importance of this task, many governments require utility organisations to inspect and repair their infrastructure in a timely manner. The general industry standard and government requirement for inspections is a visual check every 1–2 years and once every 3-5 years for a detailed examination and repair. To meet this demand, Aerial Work aviation capabilities, like manned helicopters, are utilised to meet this critical demand.
platforms are via either a passive sensor (Infra-Red (IR), Noise and Radio Detection, etc.) or active sensor (Laser (Lidar), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), etc.). The information from these inspections allows utility firms to decide "when" and "what" to "repair or replace" or "construct" to ensure electrical power is not interrupted.
The primary task helicopters and their crews are asked to accomplish are:
Constructing and Repairing Besides inspections and surveying and knowing the status of the gird, restoring the grid across vast distances and in remote locations requires special lift, reach and agility. The principal work helicopter crews provide in this area is cable laying, structure repair, and construction.
Inspecting and Surveying An inspection and survey is what it sounds like, a careful, thorough review with the naked eye or via a sensor of every single part of a utility asset. The primary methods of assessing the health of the power grid by airborne
Without precision, robust and agile airlift in remote locations, the utility sector could not achieve its timely goal of expanding or servicing every mile of its power footprint, i.e., reaching every city, urban, rural, and unique austere customer.

Why are Helicopters a Perfect Fit for Aerial Powerline Operations?
Also, heavy-lift helicopter operations utilise or sling strops, nets, ropes, chains, slings, shackles, shingle buckets, concrete skips, and even at times a mobile fuel tanker for their remote operations.
As mentioned before, because helicopters are agile and reliable from an operational perspective, they significantly reduce the time it takes to inspect and deliver across vast areas. In general, they're twice as fast as vehicle patrols on overhead power lines that follow roads and 20 times quicker on power lines in terrain that is difficult to navigate or avoiding private property.
Who are the Men & Women that keep you Energised from the Sky?
Compared with other types of aircrew members in general aviation, airlines, and even in the Aerial Work aviation community, the professionals who fly helicopters to ensure the grid is working 24/7 are unique in their skills and capabilities.
Additionally, the bird's-eye view allows aircrew to identify, monitor, and repair any wear and tear or potential risks, such as overgrown vegetation or deterioration on the topside of poles and towers that ground crews can't see.
The primary type of helicopter aircrew members who ensure the electrical grid is inspected promptly and that everything is connected correctly are Pilots, Airborne Sensor Operators, and Aerial Linemen. The unique qualifications of these individuals are:
What is the Typical Type of Helicopter and Kit used in Aerial Powerline Operations?
As with so many other specific Aerial Work aviation sectors (Agriculture Aviation, etc.), there is usually a preference of aircraft that suit the type of work required. In the case of helicopters and the powerline sector, the helicopter community prefers aircraft that are designed for hard-work and less on sleek VIP airlift like the Bell 430.
Helicopter Pilot On average, a Powerline Helicopter Pilot has a Commercial Helicopter Pilot Certificate or Licence, 2,000 hours Pilot-In-Command (PIC) time, 1,000 hours turbinepowered aircraft time and 200+ hours in the aircraft they're required to fly.
Inspecting and Surveying
Relating to aerial inspection, the helicopter powerline inspection sector gravitates to the following type of aircraft and kit:
The type of specialised training and experience these pilots possess are operating in wire environments, wire strike, mountain flying, hoisting, powerline patrol, and powerline construction.
Aircraft – The preferred class of helicopter used in inspecting is the "Light Helicopter." If you scan the aerial helicopter industry sector, you'll see many operators use the following platforms to maximise lift of the sensor payload but at the same time provide cost-effective endurance to cover large swaths of territory: • Bell Helicopter, Bell 206 Jetranger – A two-bladed, single or twin-engine light utility helicopter. The Bell 206 was initially designed to meet military requirements, i.e., light, agile, and rugged, i.e., a perfect match for powerline operations. • Airbus, H125 Squirrel (previously named the AS350 B3e) – A three-bladed, single-engine light utility helicopter. The H125 was explicitly designed for Aerial Work aviation regarding operating in extreme conditions and being adaptable to many multi-missions. Kit - When it comes to specialised systems used in aerial powerline inspections and outside the traditional use of Mk 1 eyeballs and binoculars, today's power line helicopter inspections, as mentioned before, are supported by stateof-the-art aerial sensors. For example, one of the newer sensor configurations used is combining multi-systems (HD video, thermal, IR Corona, and ultra-high-definition imagery) mounted on the exterior of the helicopter and an operator workstation embedded within the cockpit or cabin.
Constructing and Repairing
Pertaining to less brain matter and more on muscle lifting, the helicopter powerline service sector also provides capabilities to repair current infrastructure and establish new powerline access by flying in prefabricated structures or laying cables. When it comes to aircraft and kit, the following is recognised as the core capabilities: Aircraft - The favoured class of helicopters used in constructing and repairing is either "light lift" helicopters for precision repairs or "medium to heavy lift" helicopters for heavy construction. The following are common platforms used for such operations: • MD Helicopters, MD 500 Series (powerline repairs) – A five-bladed, single-engine light utility civilian helicopter. Because of its small size, stability, and agility, it's very effective in manoeuvering within inches of high wires and structures for precision repairs. At the same time, crewmembers can safely conduct repairs from the skids of the "Little Bird."
Airborne Sensor Operator Primarily for powerline inspecting and surveying, an Airborne Sensor Operator (ASO) is responsible for managing the full inspection process, i.e., from planning, operating onboard sensors, and data processing. The specialised training or experience ASO's require are flight & airmanship fundamentals, helicopter operations, aerial inspection fundamentals, sensor operations, and data processing, exploitation, and dissemination methods. • Sikorsky, S-54/64 Skycrane (Construction) – A sixbladed, twin-engine heavy-lift helicopter. Powered by massive, twin 4,500 horsepower engines, the aircraft is capable of lifting payloads approaching 20,000 lbs, which makes it ideal for lifting large/massive transmission towers, stringing wires, or delivering work crews, tools, and hardware to remote destinations. Repair Kit - Not like the digital side of this sector, the repair and construction side of this industry leverages special tools and hosting equipment that you'll not find in any hardware store. When it comes to repairing high voltage structures, the helicopter powerline repair community utilises many different methods or means for crewmembers to work safely and effectively between the helicopter and the utility structure. Some of the common types of platforms crewmembers work from are: • Ladders – A "helicopter linemen ladder" is a modified latter that is lowered and hung from a helicopter to the electrical structure. Crewmembers are either hosted with the ladder or delivered to the ladder. • Perches – A perch is a platform attached to the side of the fuselage or connected to the skids of the helicopter. The perch allows crewmembers to sit or stand while extending away from the aircraft to accomplish their required repairs, i.e., it's like "walking the plank" for a job! Construction Kit - Regarding construction and installation, utility structures and cables are difficult loads to manage due to an irregular center of gravity. i.e., "swinging." Because of this, specialised aerial helicopter long-line rigging is used to ensure stability and payload security while slinging heavy objects.
Aerial Linemen Probably the most daring crewmember onboard an Aerial Powerline Helicopter. The Aerial Linemen, during repair and construction operations, is responsible for doing the hands-on work, i.e., constructing, inspecting, and repairing electrical high voltage lines from the helicopter, or transferring to structures to wire-walk on both energised and de-energised lines. Relating to training and tradecraft, Aerial Linemen learn basic airmanship, crew communications, and the principles of helicopter operations. Additionally, Aerial Linemen have 3 to 4 years' experience as an Electrical Linemen, hoist training, powerline transmission knowledge, and knowledge of specialised materials & procedures used in powerline work.
Leaving the Lights-On!
As you can see, keeping the "Lights-On" when it comes to maintaining electrical networks, requires dull, dirty, and dangerous work. To meet this challenge, the helicopter is the perfect platform to support the electrical utility industry sector, especially in inspecting and repairing high voltage towers and lines. Even with the growing use of unmanned aircraft by many utility companies, the manned helicopter sector still has a job to do. Until unmanned aircraft can meet the same level of precision, robustness, agility, and heavy-lift that manned helicopters can provide, the helicopter will remain a mainstay in this industry sector. With that, you can expect aerial helicopter powerline service providers and their dedicated pilots, ASOs, and Aerial Linemen will continue to "Hover" and "Hang-Out" for many years to come! I

How to Decide Between a Light Jet and a Turboprop For would-be Business Aviation users with the need, would a Light Jet or a Turboprop be the best choice of aircraft purchase? Dave Higdon speaks with Janine Iannarelli to establish some of the factors that will lead a buyer to the right decision… The recent launch of the Beechcraft King Air 360 resurrected a discussion pitting the advantages of Turboprop aircraft against the advantages of Light Jets. The King Air 360 was announced after the venerable Super King Air 350 proved it wasn't too old to benefit from an upgrade many years in the making. The jet that started the debate over whether to buy a Light Jet or Turboprop came from Wichita, Kansas in the 1960s courtesy of Bill Lear. Coincidentally, the Turboprop came from another Wichita company operating on the opposite side of town: Beech Aircraft Corp. As the pioneers in their segments, the Learjet 23 and King Air 90 faced no direct competition, while the differences between them relegated each to its own market niche. The fuel use differed considerably, as did other aspects of the operation of these aircraft, such as runway needs and cruise speed. The Learjets were faster by nearly 300kts at cruise (back then). And jets typically enjoyed operating at higher altitudes, often providing respite from weather at lower altitudes to which the turboprops were limited. But in the ensuing decades Light Jets have evolved into more user-friendly aircraft and turboprops have evolved to gain speed and comfort amenities. As the gaps between the two categories have narrowed, today's question became a routine inquiry for would-be buyers of new and used business aircraft. The Question: Light Jet or Turboprop? In keeping with the grand tradition of aviation, the short answer is, “it depends”. As a business travel tool, the answer will depend on many operational considerations, including: • How the operator plans to use the aircraft; • The type of operations envisioned; and • The need the operator seeks to fulfil primarily. Today's inventory in each category offers something unavailable in the early 1960s: Single-engine versions of both jet and turboprops, further helping to complicate the selection process. Even more confusing, some Turboprop singles deliver speeds that are very close to those offered by some of the Light Jets. Ultimately, the decision over whether to buy a Light Jet or Turboprop requires numerous factors to be weighed, and those factors will be unique from one operator to another. “There are a number of things that can go into that
42 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2020
“Ultimately, the decision over whether to buy a Light Jet or Turboprop requires numerous factors to be weighed, and those factors will be unique from one operator to another.” decision,” explains Janine Iannarelli, founder of Par Avion Ltd. “You climb faster and fly higher in jets – and being able to get above inclement weather is an important consideration." Key among the considerations are the types of airports that the aircraft will use. While some of today's modern Light Jets use far less runway than the original Learjet 23, so, too, do the latest Turboprops (which already held a runway-performance advantage, accessing short, unimproved strips). Fuel consumption also plays into the examination of Direct Operating Costs (DOCs), and maintenance costs may be a little lower for a Turboprop owner. As Iannarelli notes, however, speed for speed jets tend to use about double the fuel a turboprop requires to accomplish the same trip. But, offsetting that fuel flow are the shorter trip times of many jet flights when flying towards the upper limits of their range capabilities. Assess Carefully “If you can't afford to use the airplane to its full potential,” one operator explained, “you're buying too much airplane – be it piston, turboprop or jet.” Another business operator (a commercial real estate investor) told AvBuyer that at first he hesitated over signing a purchase contract for a new Light Jet. “Insurance? Higher. Maintenance? Similar. Direct Operating Costs? Higher per hour,” he reflected. The
operator came close to passing on a great deal for a new jet because of those cost differences when he realized he wasn't assessing those costs equitably. “I was comparing apples and oranges, when I should have been calculating and comparing the DOCs apples to apples.” Changing his calculus he discovered that the jet was, indeed, more expensive – across the board – but not the twice-as-expensive he had first calculated. When he started plugging flight data into his calculations using actual trip times from the turboprop he flew at the time, and the jet he wanted to fly in the future, thanks to the jet's speed advantage of 115kts, he revised many of his numbers and realized he needed 25% less time to make most of his business trips with proportionally less fuel. “The Light Jet began to move into the realm of possibility,” he reflects. Time Saved is Money Saved “When you talk about equal purchase price points and reasonable expectations of operating costs being equal, what would you choose?” Iannarelli asks. Only an individual operator can assess the typical trips, the runways used, and the en route challenges, so the right buying decision may differ. Likewise, an operator’s take on the necessary comfort items will differ, too. But with turboprops as fast as some light jets, and jets capable of using shorter runways, the choice won't get any easier until a potential buyer takes the time needed to develop a full assessment of mission needs and the budget available to support the mission. “When a person chooses a turboprop over a jet there's usually a good reason aside from costs,” Iannarelli concludes. Invariably, that reason should be your unique mission fit. ❙

Spectacular look and easy access through the large gull wing doors and cargo door
Introducing the all-new Diamond Aircraft 5 Seat DA50 RG with retractable gear With one of the widest, most comfortable cabins in its class, the DA50 RG spoils both pilots and passengers with everything known from the twin-engine DA62: generous front seats with adjustable backrests, a 60/40 split folding three seat second row bench, easy access through the large gull wing doors and cargo door and exceptional leg, shoulder and head room. Luxury features abound throughout, including premium interiors in several styles, colours and materials, LED interior lighting and many optional features, such as removable right-hand control stick, oxygen system, electric air conditioning, TKS de-icing system, Garmin GCU 476 keypad or a built-in tablet mount. Liqun Zhang, CEO Diamond Aircraft Austria, said: “We are very excited to be presenting the DA50 RG to the market. She is offering so much – space, efficiency, luxury, comfort, safety and retractable gear on a single piston aircraft that will make everyone really stand out. Plus, the extra benefits of operating a jet fuel powered aircraft - much lower emissions compared to leaded and even low leaded aviation fuels and saving many gallons of fuel and money due to excellent fuel efficiency. We are convinced that our all-new DA50 RG will be the new star on the piston single market for private pilots needing more seats and space and charter operators looking for a low-cost alternative.” “Continental's CD-300 engine and valuable partnership with Diamond on the DA50 RG reinforces the global

Check Your Insurance Renewal Dates! Aviation businesses are being squeezed like never before but need to be proactive in planning cost cutting measures, including getting quotes in good time rather than accepting and paying higher renewal premiums — even if some sort of increase in insurance costs is inevitable. According to Chris Varley, Chairman of Export & General (E&G) / Approach Aviation Insurance, who has been speaking with many aviation businesses looking to renew or expand cover, some businesses responded far too slowly to the need to look at their insurance as part of wider cost-cutting measures. In one instance, he was asked for quotes from an airfield which had already renewed with its existing insurer in June, almost as a matter of course. His advice was that the airfield was best waiting until June 2021 now — the opportunity had been missed. The unprecedented economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic has put the spotlight on insurers, as businesses and individuals check their cover for everything from business interruption to travel cover. In general, cover for such widespread risks has been excluded and cover is deemed to be for specific, localised events. But it’s all down to the small print, so will be on a case-by case basis. While the litigation for some (in particular in the hospitality sector) starts to gather pace, aviation businesses are generally not part of it, and are in general only affected in that their premiums may increase or their previous insurer may have pulled out of the market. This was happening anyway, pre-
pandemic, as aviation was already seen as being unprofitable, prompting many to pull out — although this is giving others an opportunity. It is a niche area, however, so don’t expect a rush from big-name insurers to offer us all great rates for aircraft cover, hangar-keeper’s liability, professional indemnity, and so on. Varley says that Approach Aviation Insurance takes a broad view of business cover in the aviation sector, and is happy to ‘audit’ a business for its risk-cover needs, even if that includes aircraft, hangars, PI cover, etc. The package approach from a broker can be far more effective financially for a business than going to a company that only offers its own insurance products. Approach (and other brokers) can search the market for the best deals — in an area where experience and contacts counts for everything. It’s not an area where you can go to a comparison website, as with car insurance. Varley reiterates the need to get such quotes well in advance of renewal dates. Quality brokers tend to me more of a bespoke service, and are in general willing to advise on rates for specific situations/set-ups — accepting that companies are driven by price and may not be able to beat the renewal premium of their current insurance cover. However he warns aviation businesses to be ready to be told their existing insurer is pulling out of the sector — “This is one thing that we can’t blame on the dreaded virus,” he notes. .www.approachaviation-insurance.co.uk

SPONSORED CONTENT
Registering in Trust: The International Registry’s Position on Aircraft Titles The International Registry (IR) is a notice-based registry where an aircraft interest is electronically filed – showing that an interest exists somewhere in the world. Created by the Cape Town Convention in response to global financing needs, the registry allowed for the rights of international lenders to be recognised all in one place. Not all countries are signatories to the Cape Town treaty though, and even signatories are not required to file interests at the IR. Further, aircraft can move around the globe, in and out of countries that participate in the Cape Town treaty, so there is no guarantee that there will be complete chain of ownership, or that the most current owner has registered his/her interest at the IR. Even so, it is increasingly important for parties registering in trust with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to ensure registry at the IR as well – helping to ensure chain of ownership. While the IR was originally designed to give notice of security interests against assets, not ownership interests, it evolved to include both, and continues gaining prominence in the aviation industry. Similar to the FAA, the IR takes no position on the titles registered there. As discussed in August in Registering in Trust: The FAA’s Position on Aircraft Titles, the FAA’s sole purpose regarding aircraft titles has been to file and record
documents, and the IR largely follows suit in a global capacity. While the FAA has some level of vetting of documents that are filed there, the IR has no such security measures in place. They vet users of the IR, and only allow approved entities to use their system, but there is no vetting of the interests registered there – some are valid, and some are not. The IR will not issue any statements or reports about what interests exist against assets on the registry, either. To find out, you must research yourself or hire a firm to do it for you and, often, you must go even further to find the actual interest on a country’s specific registry (like the FAA), or track down the parties themselves to see if you can find out what the interest is. The IR does a good job of giving notice to the world of the interests that are registered there, but it is by no means designed to be a complete or standalone registration system. At least not yet. It is always a safe bet to research the home country’s registry for interests as well. Thorough research from a knowledgeable and reputable company is a must to ensure, as closely as possible, a complete chain of ownership, and your registration as an owner in trust.

First European CubCrafters XCub Delivered
The first new European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certified CC19 XCub shipped for Europe in late August from the CubCrafters company headquarters in Yakima, Washington. The aircraft, to be placed on the United Kingdom registry as G-OBTO, is the first ever EASA certified aircraft to be approved with Garmin’s immensely popular G3X Touch glass panel avionics suite. The inaugural customer, Gerhard Oberholzer, who intends to base the aircraft at Fowlmere Airfield north of London, stated: “A key purpose of having an aircraft like this is to be able to travel across England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland on business, enabling very efficient access to often remote parts of the islands, using the aircraft as a working tool. “The XCub, with its higher cruising speed and modern avionics, coupled with an advanced autopilot, made a lot of sense. I’m very pleased with where we ended up,” he added. CubCrafters was awarded EASA certification for the XCub in 2018 after having shown full compliance with all European airworthiness, safety, and environmental requirements. The company then followed up the initial
EASA certification with a groundbreaking effort to offer Garmin’s non-TSO’d touchscreen glass panel avionics to European customers, the only OEM manufacturer to do so in a certified aircraft. “The European market is very important to us in the continuing expansion of international XCub sales opportunities,” said Patrick Horgan, president of CubCrafters. “There has been a lot of hard work getting to this point with EASA. We are extremely pleased to see the market has responded and the first new XCubs are now headed for Europe.” Kamil Skorupski, who manages distribution of the XCub in Europe as part of the CubCrafters global sales network, is already seeing a keen anticipation for the new aircraft. “Within a year we will have XCubs based in the UK, Iceland, Germany, and France. Interest is strong and will only grow as more aircraft arrive and European pilots can personally see the style, safety, and utility the XCub offers,” said Skorupski. Delivery positions for new EASAcertified XCubs are available for mid-2021. European customers are encouraged to register their interest with CubCrafters Europe at the company’s website.

Micro Vortex Generators Micro Vortex Generators are small aluminium blades placed in a spanwise line aft of the leading edge of the wing and on tail surfaces. They control airflow over the upper surface of the wing by creating vortices that energize the boundary layer. This results in improved performance and control authority at low airspeeds and high angles of attack.
The Benefits of Micro VGs • Lower Lift Off Speed • Lower Stall Speeds • Improved Controllability • Improved Characteristics • Improved Safety • S.T.O.L. Benefits • 1 Day Installation

Continental Receives EASA Approval For Jet-A CD-170
Continental, an AVIC International Holding (HK) LTD company, has received EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) type certificate validation for the Jet-A CD-170 engine. The CD-170 engine is a part of Continental’s CD-100 series of engines, which have accumulated more than 7.1 million flight hours worldwide since inception. The newly certified Jet-A engine is included in the current type certificate (TC) for the already proven and reliable CD-100 series. The TC is the first of many certification milestones as Continental plans to apply for other foreign validation type certificates for the CD-170 “to reach aviators worldwide.” “We are pleased to reach this significant milestone for the CD-170 engine”, said Jurgen Schwarz, executive vice president of Global Engineering, Continental Aerospace Technologies. “This milestone represents the dedication of our team and our commitment to advancing JetA technology. This engine design
demonstrates innovation through our enhanced fuel system that provides an additional level of redundancy, making it a safe and reliable option.” This 170-horsepower engine has a higher power output that is achieved through several internal design features, such as an increased fuel injection rail pressure and adjusted injection time. These and other design changes result not only in higher performance output but also maximise efficiency through an improved combustion process. The CD-170 operates efficiently on readily available Jet A-1 or Diesel EN590, reducing fuel consumption by up to 50 percent compared to comparable gasoline engines. The engine benefits from reduced operating costs and has extended endurance and range that is monitored by the engine’s Full Authority Engine Digital Control (FADEC) system. The engine design has received production certificate validation and is successfully integrated into Tecnam’s P2010 TDI aircraft. I
Aero-Dienst Gets Winslow LifeRaft Approval
German company Aero-Dienst has received certification as an authorised service station for the maintenance, repair and new sale of Winslow liferafts. Nuremberg, Germany-based Aero-Dienst has been approved by Winslow LifeRaft Company as a full-service provider for business aviation and air ambulance services, further expanding the company’s product portfolio. The component shop, which began operation two years ago in Landsberg am Lech, Germany, can now perform all services on liferafts of the Winslow LifeRaft company, which is a division of Collins Aerospace. Aero-Dienst recently received approval from the German Federal Aviation Authority (LBA) for the overhaul, ELT reprogramming, exchange and new sale of Winslow liferafts. The annual capacity of the component shop is approximately 500 liferaft overhauls, performed by a team of eight experts. This team consists of technicians with several years of liferaft experience, and one employee with 10 years of consulting and sales experience relating to Winslow liferafts. “We are very pleased to be able to offer a full range of services to liferaft customers,” said Ralf Dohle, manager of the component shop in Landsberg, who expressed his relief
given that “Corona-related restrictions didn’t exactly facilitate the approval process.” Aero-Dienst offers its customers an AOG service with a 24-hour TAT for liferafts, which is used gladly and increasingly. “If we receive the liferafts in the morning, they will be shipped back to the customer on the same day,” said Dohle. Liferafts raise many questions, especially in the area of approval. The team of experts at Aero-Dienst can answer these questions thanks to the company’s extensive experience. Aero-Dienst also said it is the right partner for the (re)packaging and placement of liferafts in the aircraft cabin in accordance with customers,’’ needs and wishes. “For us, this is an important milestone in our portfolio,” said André Ebach, head of maintenance at Aero-Dienst. “Our customers appreciate the short repair and turnaround times, especially because liferafts are components that require regular maintenance. “With our experience as an aircraft operator, as a maintenance facility and as a service center for various aircraft types, we are convinced that as an authorised service station for Winslow liferafts we will be able to meet our customers’ wishes even more effectively.”
