Garmin G3X Touch Approved By EASA for Single-Engine Piston Aircraft

Scalable upgrade options are available for hundreds of aircraft models in Europe Garmin has received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification of the G3X Touch flight display for hundreds of single-engine certificated aircraft.

Aircraft owners that have already installed a G5 electronic flight instrument in their aircraft can easily add a G3X Touch display to take advantage of the redundancy benefits associated with this configuration, says Garmin.

The G3X Touch offers a variety of scalable panel configurations and a superior feature set that includes wireless connectivity and synthetic vision as standard, as well as advanced features such as display redundancy, advanced autopilot compatibility, engine monitoring and more.

“The building-block design of these five approved cockpit configurations give aircraft owners scalable upgrade options that suit a variety of panels,” said the US company.

“Through a well-established relationship with EASA and a combined commitment to improve safety in general aviation, we are thrilled to bring the G3X Touch glass display suite to hundreds of certified piston aircraft in Europe,” said Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “As a trusted leader in avionics, we’re excited to offer this game-changing system to aircraft owners who are ambitious to pursue a flight display upgrade, giving them an opportunity to take advantage of the safety and redundancy benefits of a Garmin glass display system.” The G3X Touch system for certified aircraft is representative of Garmin’s experience in integrated flight deck technology, which boasts a resilient, high-resolution display with a clean and sleek appearance. The touchscreen offers an intuitive user interface and through any combination of the touchscreen or dual-concentric knobs, pilots can efficiently perform common in-flight functions like direct-to navigation, setting altitude pre-select or radio tuning. Pilots will also appreciate the seamless in-flight experience behind G3X Touch as the user interface is harmonious with multiple Garmin products, such as the GTN 650Xi/750Xi navigators or the GPS 175, GNC 355 and GNX 375. Multiple panel configurations and display options allow pilots and aircraft owners to take a scalable approach to their current and future avionics investment. One configuration option includes dual large 10.6-inch G3X Touch displays and another includes a 10.6-inch display paired with a 7-inch display. Both of these configurations offer the convenience and utility of a large primary flight display (PFD) with a dedicated multi-function display (MFD). Another option allows dual 7-inch displays to serve as a dedicated PFD/MFD. For space-limited panels, pilots can also install a single 10.6-inch or 7-inch display. In configurations where multiple displays are installed, the G3X Touch system offers redundancy through a reversionary mode where a single display is capable of showing all primary flight information, including engine information when installed.

The G3X Touch suite offers pilots greater situational awareness throughout every phase of flight. For example, Synthetic Vision (SVX) comes standard on all G3X Touch displays and provides a rich, three-dimensional depiction of terrain, obstacles, water features, the runway environment and more. Capable of serving as a standalone VFR navigator, the G3X Touch provides benefits that help further situational awareness in visual conditions with features like vertical navigation (VNAV), which allows pilots to generate a vertical descent profile by setting an altitude constraint in the flight plan. Modern tools such as wireless flight plan transfer, the sharing of traffic, weather, back-up attitude information and more with a compatible tablet or smartphone are all available via Garmin Connext. The G3X Touch flight display for certificated aircraft can interface with a variety of optional Garmin equipment including a variety of Garmin GPS navigators and Nav/Comms; the GFC 500 autopilot (fully-coupled instrument and visual/missed approaches now being possible when the G3X Touch is paired with the GFC 500 autopilot and a GPS 175/GNC 355/GNX 375, GTN 650Xi/750Xi or GTN 650/750); the G5 as an all-in-one back-up instrument; ADS-B via GNX 375, GTX 345 or the GDL 50R/52R — offering TargetTrend and TerminalTraffic features; the GMA 345/342 audio panel; and, last but not least, the GTS 800 active traffic system. The G3X Touch can also display primary engine information with the addition of the GEA 24, including engine gauges, color bands, alerts, fuel and other vital information. Piston engines with up to six cylinders are supported.

Transferring Beneficial Ownership in Trust Many of our customers are familiar with the process of registering in trust, and the reasons to do so; yet questions remain regarding transferring the beneficial ownership of a trust. A great example we hear is “If I sell my aircraft, does the new buyer need a new trust?” Simply answered, “No, you can transfer your beneficial interest to the new owner.” But what goes into this simple answer is rather complex. There is always a lot involved – preparation and due diligence – in any given aircraft transaction. There are vigorous steps involved in establishing an aircraft trust to begin with – a transfer of beneficial ownership must meet the same requirements, but once met, the transfer can be seamless.

A Little Background Aircraft, like many other high-value assets, can be owned in trust by a third party, transparently and legally. Known as owner trusts, they have been approved for use by the FAA and used for legitimate business purposes in US aviation for 40 years.

How does it work? Transferring beneficial ownership typically begins with a letter from the beneficial owner stating their intent to transfer the interest of their aircraft to somebody else and who that person is. The new beneficiary is still obliged to meet FAA requirements, which includes individual identification, proof of insurance on the aircraft, and copies of corporate documents if applicable. Once the trustee collects these documents and the new owner pays a transfer fee, the trustee will file documents with the FAA to change the beneficial owner of the trust. Title remains in the name of the trustee, though the beneficial ownership of the aircraft has actually changed hands. The beneficial owner doesn’t have to be the operator, either. The operator can be anyone the beneficiary chooses. Passport, proof of residence, and information about where the aircraft is hangared is collected, and the new operator assigned. These documents are included in what is provided to the FAA.

Key Information & Reporting

Owner trusts were originally developed to facilitate the registration of US airlines. Because airlines are publicly traded, their ownership changes on a regular basis, making it impossible to determine whether they meet FAA registration requirements. Airlines must be registered in the US in order to effectively operate, so trusts were created to solve this problem.

It is important to understand that Know Your Customer (KYC) still applies to a transfer of beneficial title – it is not a “workaround” of FAA requirements. Properly identifying prospective customers, in this case a new beneficiary, remains part of the aircraft trust process.

Given the global nature of the aircraft market – sales, leases, financings, investing and other transactions involving parties from many locations – the benefits of registering in trust became apparent to multiple different entities for multiple different reasons.

Owner trustees must also be able to provide key information regarding beneficiaries within two business days upon request, including operator identity and principal place of residence or business, location of aircraft maintenance records, and where the aircraft is hangared. More detailed information about operations and crew can be required within five days.

Further, with general aviation being a popular pastime in the US, whether for pleasure or business, there are many scenarios in which an owner trustee relationship is a good decision. While FAA registration is the primary reason for aircraft trusts, they also might be set up for structural purposes, simplification purposes, or convenience. Whatever the reason, a trust can be maintained for an indefinite period of time. It is also noteworthy that, in general, aircraft that maintain their N-registration generally have higher resale values.

Quality trustees thoroughly vet their trustors long before they ever put them in trust and have this information on file. Owner trustees are frequently in contact with the owner or operator, with airworthiness directives, insurance renewals, FCC renewals, and reregistration of the aircraft. Because of the nature of the trust relationship, trustees further develop and maintain relationships with their beneficiaries throughout the life of the trust. The same applies to new beneficiaries, making the transfer of beneficial ownership of an aircraft a seamless process.

Have you ever heard of – "When Pigs Fly?" Well, there is something genuine and relevant to that old saying. Aerial Work aviation is a critical part of fortifying the agriculture industry to produce more food to feed the world today and beyond! Introduction

When people think of agriculture and farming, they think of farmers and ranchers growing crops and herding animals alone. However, if you look in the sky above these farms, fields, orchards and pastures, you'll see a variety of manned and unmanned aircraft conducting specialised services to aid farmers and ranchers. Their services help the agriculture industry in producing a secure, affordable, and ample supply of protein, fiber and biofuel, in addition to protecting forest and controlling health-threatening pests. With farmers and ranchers there is a critical need to deliver more food, increase efficiency, all while making sustainability a priority.

Aerial Work aviation has expanded tenfold, both in capabilities and technology, to support this critical area of sustaining humanity.

crops, utilising leading-edge aerial sensors and data processing technology can allow farmers (and ranchers) to know much more than their forefathers ever did. When it comes to wanting to know more, the main areas of interest for farmers and ranchers are soil and field analysis, crop monitoring, and the health of their domain.

Soil & Field Analysis

Aircraft with specialised sensors can be critical at the start of the crop cycle. They can collect and create precise 3-D maps for initial soil analysis, which are useful in planning seed planting patterns. Additionally, this information can help with irrigation and nitrogen-level management throughout the crop cycle.

Crop Monitoring

Planes with hyperspectral, multispectral, or thermal sensors can identify which parts of a field are dry or need improvements. Additionally, once the crop is growing, additional flights allow the calculation of the vegetation index, which highlights the relative density and health of the crop, and will also show the heat signature and extent of energy/heat the crops emit.

Crop Health Evaluation

Besides analysing and monitoring the standard crop growing cycle, it's critical to assess crop health and spot bacterial or fungal infections on trees. By scanning a crop with aerial sensors, farmers can track changes in plants and indicate their health. If disease is discovered, farmers and ranchers can apply and monitor treatments sooner, and more precisely.

Spraying, Seeding & Herding

On the traditional side, Aerial Work aviation supports the agriculture sector by spraying, seeding, and herding. Aerial Application (spraying and seeding or crop dusting) and aerial animal herding (mustering) continue to play a significant part in maintaining the health and growth of both plants and animals in the agriculture industry.

Spraying & Seeding (Aerial Application)

When it comes to spraying and seeding from the sky, Aerial Application provides the seeds, fertiliser, and treatments to control weeds, insects, and fungi. It is used on both conventional and organic crops. Aerial Application is also used to treat forest land, range land, and pasture land. As an interesting side note, the Aerial Application sector also leverages their aerial capabilities to fight and prevent the spread of wildfires and protect human health by controlling mosquitoes that carry West Nile fever and Zika virus and other harmful diseases.

Herding (Animal Husbandry - Mustering)

When it comes to managing livestock, Aerial Work aircraft are used to herd or muster cattle, identify sick or lost animals, deter livestock predators, and monitor vegetation and water supply conditions. Nimble aircraft like rotary-wing platforms provide the perfect level of versatility to operate at a low level and at rapid variable speeds that traditional cowboy ranching methods cannot. To highlight the benefits of employing aircraft in herding or mustering livestock, experienced agriculture pilots can locate a herd and guide them to the corral within an hour. In contrast, horseback cowboys would take weeks to achieve the same result.

What Aircraft are Used?

When it comes to what type of aircraft used to support the Agriculture sector, pretty much all categories of aircraft from manned to unmanned and heavier-than-air (Aerodyne) to lighter-than-air (Aerostat) are used to

However, the predominant aircraft used today are fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft. Within these two manned and unmanned classes of aircraft, the majority are either specifically designed and built for agriculture use or are modified for a particular task, i.e., "spraying, seeding, and herding" or "data collection and processing."

Manned Aircraft

In the manned aircraft arena, the dominant aircraft types are either single or twin-turbo STOL/heavy-lift airframes or modified rotary-wing platforms. In the task of spraying and seeding, the most common aircraft (a.k.a. “Agriculture Aircraft”) are fixed-wing, such as the: • Air Tractor - AT-504 • WSK PZL Warszawa-Okęcie - PZL-106 Kruk (Raven) Regarding herding or mustering livestock, nothing beats a helicopter. As mentioned before, helicopters can maneuver like a cowboy riding horseback but with many more numerous advantages. Unmanned Aircraft

Without a doubt, unmanned Aerial Work aircraft are expanding in their support of the Agriculture sector. The unmanned aircraft industry sector is "Double-Downing" on its efforts to supply farmers and ranchers the required data collection and processed information to make a difference between success or failure.

Like the manned aircraft sector, the unmanned sector is currently expanding in flying the skies over farms, orchards, and ranges with both fixed-wing and rotarywing aircraft, but on a much lower and smaller-scale "for now." There is still room for progress in the global use of drones and improvements are happening all the time. Manually reviewing drone footage, for example, might be a project that takes days. But automating that process, perhaps with artificial intelligence (AI) technology, might help the user reduce that work to minutes, quickly and accurately maximising the value of the data gathered by the drones.

Drones may not be large but their potential impact is huge. That’s not just an optimistic claim for Luxaviation Group. As well as being one of the world’s biggest private jet and helicopter operators, the company is now celebrating the successful first year of a project to spray vineyards using drones. Having launched the project through Luxaviation Drones in July 2019, working with wine producer Domaine L&R Kox, the activities now cover the entire Luxembourgish wine region. There are now seven winemakers involved in the project, with another 10 having set dates for next season after attending flights.

Through the data-driven agri- and viticulture drone service provided, winemakers can achieve more accurate and efficient spraying than using helicopters, as well as minimised noise pollution. Protecting vines from disease, spraying organic phytosanitary (plant health) products, is critical for winemakers. Christophe Lapierre, president of Luxaviation's services division, says: “This smarter and more sustainable approach to viticulture will provide winemakers with an instant competitive advantage over companies relying on conventional helicopter usage. We’re impressed by the willingness of winemakers to contribute to the enhancement of the service and invest in unmanned aircraft.”

Pilotless passenger aircraft could revolutionise urban commutes. We’re not in the world of science fiction anymore. When aviation giants such as Airbus and Boeing are investing in unmanned passenger aircraft, there’s clearly long-term commercial potential out there. Coronavirus may have disrupted all the world’s plans but hopes are still high for commercial eVTOL operations starting in around 2023. Talking of COVID-19 raises another point. There’s already evidence vulnerable passengers will forever fly privately now because they understandably don’t want the risks of moving through a crowded airport or aircraft again. By extension, those passengers will find autonomous flight, without even needing to interact with a pilot, very appealing. Large or small, whether carrying passengers or spraying a vineyard, drones in all their forms have a big future and Luxaviation is doing its best to play its part.

Swedish Medevac PC-24 Completes Successful Maiden Flight

The first of six PC-24s for the Swedish Air Ambulance Organisation took off from Buochs Airport for its maiden flight on 22 July 2020. Sporting the national colours of Sweden – blue and yellow – the Super Versatile Jet will cut a dash across Swedish skies. Less than a year after the agreement between the Kommunalförbundet Svenskt Ambulansflyg (KSA) and Pilatus was signed, the maiden flight of the first Swedish medevac PC-24 marks an important milestone in the programme. Despite the disruption caused by the covid-19 pandemic, Pilatus still managed to meet the tight production schedule.

Six medevac PC-24s for KSA

As an air ambulance service organisation, KSA will provide advanced medical assistance and access to fast, professional aeromedical care, to everyone living in Sweden. The full KSA fleet will comprise six PC-24s, with all aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2021. The maiden flight heralds the start of numerous flight tests to be performed by Pilatus. On completion of

these tests, the PC-24s for KSA will be transferred to Aerolite AG, the specialist Swiss company appointed to oversee the installation of the medevac interior.

About the PC-24 air ambulance

The outstanding flexibility of the PC-24 opens up a wealth of possibilities for use as a medevac aircraft. The cabin offers sufficient space for three patients plus medical personnel. The PC-24’s large cargo door also facilities speedy loading and unloading of patients. All these advantages, combined with the PC-24’s STOL credentials, make it the ideal aircraft for all air ambulance missions. After the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia and the US North Slope Borough Search and Rescue Department, KSA is the third organisation to deploy the PC-24 as a medevac aircraft.

French aircraft manufacturer Daher has received certification approval from both Europe’s EASA agency and the United States’ FAA for its HomeSafe Emergency Autoland System, which is now fitted as standard to its TBM 940 single-engine turboprop aircraft. The dual certification authorises, for European and USregistered aircraft, a system that is capable of automatically bringing an aircraft to a runway touchdown if the pilot becomes incapacitated.

HomeSafe is the ultimate step of the TBM e-copilot concept evolution, after the autothrottle introduction on the TBM 940. It is based on Garmin’s Emergency Autoland system – available as a part of the G3000 integrated flight deck – and has been under development for the TBM since 2017 by the airplane systems department at Daher’s Aircraft Division.

The development and certification effort included software implementation and an intensive flight test campaign that included two hundred automated landings. The system is activated manually by an easily recognisable orange button atop the cockpit instrument panel, or semiautomatically if the Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) has been engaged. Its software integrates weather and terrain information to select the best airport for landing, taking into account fuel range and runway length. When HomeSafe is activated, occupants of the aircraft are briefed by a safety video on the cockpit’s multifunction display. Air traffic control is informed of the situation by an automated message, and the transponder automatically is set to the emergency squawk code. The system provides inputs to the aircraft’s flight controls and adjusts engine power settings through the touchdown phase. During the landing rollout, HomeSafe will simultaneously activate the landing gear brakes and shut down the engine. The pilot can override the autoland function at any time to resume normal flight conditions by simply disconnecting the autopilot. HomeSafe operates with systems and their functionality already integrated on the TBM 940, such as the autopilot and autothrottle, as well as functions of Daher’s TBM eCopilot: Enhanced Stability and Protection (ESP), the Emergency Descent Mode and automated de-icing detection. Inputs from the radar altimeter also are included. Additional equipment incorporated on the TBM 940 for system functionality with HomeSafe includes electrical relays to enable automatic activation of the flaps, landing gear and landing lights. An emergency automatic braking system – activated by a Garmin servo control – complements the standard braking system, with an increased-capacity hydraulic fluid tank. A fuel shut-off valve also has been added to stop the engine by cutting off the fuel supply.

What Does it Cost to Charter a Business Aircraft?

What does your money buy in today’s business aircraft charter market? How can you

tell what impacts those costs, and what is right to pay for your own mission need? Jet&Co’s Alexandre Valentini explores… Those who consider chartering a business aircraft tend to do so recognizing that their time is worth more than it used to be. By chartering a business airplane, passengers can: • Connect more destinations direct than they could flying with the scheduled airlines; • Cover more ground, potentially visiting three or four different destinations on the same day; • Minimize the lost time spent hanging around airport terminals; and • Where a suitable cabin connectivity solution is installed they can enjoy a productive, private working environment while in transit. It’s important to detail the benefits to flying privately, since they all place the ultimate cost of chartering a business aircraft into perspective. When discussing the actual costs of business aircraft charter there are a variety of factors that can impact what you will be charged.

Can Any Type of Aircraft be Chartered?

According to the National Business Aviation Association, “Business Aviation describes the use of any ‘General Aviation’ aircraft for a business purpose”. The US Federal Aviation Administration defines General Aviation as “all flights that are not conducted by the military or the scheduled airlines”. It is therefore natural that a very wide variety of aircraft can be used for Business Aviation charter, and that Part 135 charter is widespread. In Alaska alone (where remote communities rely heavily on aviation to connect with the wider world) there are over 300 legal operators of Part 135 Charter aircraft. Moreover, there are over 1,100 aircraft available for charter in Alaska, varying widely by type and size, including single-passenger Piper J3s, six-seater DHC-2 Beavers, and many more.

What Does my Charter Money Buy Today?

What Impacts Charter Costs?

Following is a rough guide to what your charter money buys you today (with stated prices representing the cost per hour).

• • • •

• $200-$600/Hour: You can charter a smaller piston aircraft providing up to six seats’ capacity and a range of between 300 and 500nm (typically) for less than $600 per hour. These are mostly utilized for short flights of less than one hour, and are popular with tourists and entrepreneurs among others.

If you are considering booking a charter trip, in many cases the price will be based on the following factors:

• • • •

The aircraft type/size required The number of passengers/luggage The length of the journey and any repositioning costs Airport landing and handling fees, fuel and services used (i.e. catering, etc.) Overnight costs Crew salaries Connectivity/In-Flight Entertainment costs Tax and other miscellaneous costs.

It’s worth noting that airport fees will vary drastically – so, for example, a charter flight to a major metropolitan airport will reflect significantly higher handling/landing fee costs than a flight to a rural airport. Also, as alluded to above, Business Aviation does not always mean private jets. Anybody seeking to charter an aircraft should ensure the aircraft they choose is well suited to their need in terms of type and size, to avoid unnecessary cost on their charter trip. It could be that a turboprop, helicopter, or even a piston aircraft would be a better match for the mission need than a jet – particularly for short-range trips into smaller

• $600-$2,000/Hour: Charter customers spending between $600 and $2,000 are likely to be hiring a turboprop (i.e. a Beechcraft King Air or Piper Cheyenne), or a Very Light/Entry Level Jet (such as a Cessna Citation Mustang or Cirrus VisionJet). With ranges often stretching to 1,000nm, and with speeds typically between 250-300kts this aircraft type is commonly chartered for flights lasting up to two hours in length. Usually seating up to four or five passengers, tourist groups and businesses form the common client profile for this level of charter. • $2,000-$3,000/Hour: Those spending between $2,000 and $3,000 are likely to be hiring a Light Jet, such as a Cessna CJ-series aircraft, Raytheon Premier IA or Embraer Phenom 100. The range and speed of these aircraft is not significantly different to the

Turboprop/Entry-Level Jet class, but seating capacity is greater, enabling businesses and wealthy private individuals to transport up to six or seven passengers. • $3,000-$4,000/Hour: Within this price range charter customers are likely to be paying for a Mid-size Jet. These range in size and capability between the Cessna Citation XLS or Phenom 300, right up to the Super Mid-Size Bombardier Challenger 350 or Gulfstream G280. The bigger jets offer up to 10 seats. Aircraft within this price band are commonly chartered by two types of user: Those needing more passenger capacity for shorter flights, or those needing to fly up to four passengers 2,000nm or more. • $4,000-$5,000/Hour: This price range incorporates some of the Large Cabin jets, such as the Bombardier Challenger 650, Dassault Falcon 900LX or Embraer Legacy 650. These aircraft are capable of transatlantic flying, but can be used for shorter trips where, for example, a need exists to transport as many as 12 passengers. • $5,000+/Hour: At more than $5,000 per hour, you are likely to be shopping the charter market for an Ultra-Long-Range/Large Cabin Jet, such as Gulfstream’s G550 or G650, Dassault’s Falcon 7X and 8X, or Bombardier’s Global 6500 and 7500. Typical passenger capacity is for more than 12, while the range of these aircraft will exceed 5,000nm. Non-stop flights connecting Los Angeles with Paris, or London and Beijing are possible.

In Summary

As you can see from the above, the cost of chartering a business aircraft depends on your practical need. There is little benefit spending $5,000 per hour to charter an Ultra-Long-Range business jet to fly four hours across a continent. Conversely, many of the benefits of chartering a business aircraft will be lost if fuel stops need to be made due to a shorter range than is required. You will need to know the type of aircraft that will fulfil your travel objectives first, after which you can begin to determine the actual cost to charter on a trip-by-trip basis.

For the first time, all the usual frantic activity settled to a calm pace. On the positive side of less daily business, employees at aps could dedicate themselves to long-term projects which have been pushed aside in the past. In the case of aps this meant an opportunity too to take advantage of time. The company undertook an ambitious digitalisation plan. Part of this project was the revitalisation of the consignment processing. This included a largescale inventory and the necessary rearrangement to adapt its data set for an up-to-date software solution. The moderate workload also provided aps with an opportunity to undertake extensive analysis and improvement of its internal processes. The third, and for customers probably the most exciting project, is a brand-new aps web shop. This is still an ongoing undertaking. In spirit of aps’ costumeroriented philosophy, the developers are focusing mainly on the usability of the online platform. That’s why aps management views the web shop as a gemstone that will not only fulfil but even exceed customer expectations in a few months. With over 18 years of experience aps has established professional, competent service while keeping the relationship to its customers close and very friendly. So what’s next?

Aerotech of Louisville, Inc. was formed in November of 1976. John Evans, president of Aerotech, started rebuilding generators, starters and alternators in his Dad’s auto electric shop as a boy. His Dad started him in the “cleanup” room and later taught him to rebuild auto electrical components and how to diagnose the vehicle charging and starting system. After college John went to work for his Dad full-time. During the late 1960s, John developed an interest in flying. After several years of training John held private and commercial licences, with multi-engine and instrument ratings. Flying was his passion for over 30 years until he lost his medical due to poor eyesight.

Aerotech of Louisville was a spinoff of the auto electric business. John quickly realised how similar the starters, generators and alternators were between the automotive and aircraft manufacturers. He also saw a need for additional product support and, soon after, applied for and received his first FAA approved repair station approval.

John’s son Mike and his brothers, Jimmy and Terry, also shared an interest in flying and all received their pilot licences. Mike worked at the auto electric business for several years learning rebuilding in the same environment as his Dad. Later, Mike joined Aerotech and is now leading the company.

John and Mike share duties with Mike handling purchasing, accounting, sales, shipping/receiving and the shop. John’s duties include keeping the repair station certificate up to date, writing repair specifications, handling the drug and alcohol abuse programme, certification of tools and instruments, and working with the FAA.

Companies Could Receive Insurance Rebates But not Until After the Crisis… With many businesses struggling Approach Aviation Insurance, a broker, says insurance companies are showing little inclination to offer discounts to struggling aviation businesses covering the period of zero or very little activity that marks the COVID-19 crisis. However, Approach Aviation/E&G Chairman Chris Varley comments: “The good news is that underwriters are indicating that in the future, possibly early next year, when they can assess the extent of reductions in claims versus income from policy renewals, they may be in a position to return a proportion of customer premiums, via brokers.” He stresses, however, that this will be on a case-by-case basis for bespoke insurance products, like the ones E&G offers.

Varley says Approach Aviation Insurance’s clients have been keen to find out if they can go on lower risk cover, for example for aircraft which are inactive. In some cases aircraft have been required to fly for maintenance reasons occasionally during the lockdown so cannot have flying cover removed, while others could possibly expect premiums to be halved during that period. “Once insurers can assess their risk, claims and income from this period, it’s my belief that they will consider customer requests for partial

refunds or credits towards their renewal,” said Varley. “While we will do our best for our customers to negotiate this with underwriters, there are no guarantees,” he added. E&G also offers specialised travel insurance products and is very aware of the mainstream market where some companies are struggling to recoup losses from business trips and travel where the reason for cancellation was COVID19 disruption. Varley says that after the SARS outbreak in 2003 many insurers specifically excluded pandemics, and getting new policy including this cover for business trips could be expensive, or impossible. The company has also had queries from clients about business interruption insurance, which is proving to be a controversial area with some group action litigation being covered in the media. Varley says businesses need to check their insurance policy terms and conditions before considering whether they can challenge a rejection of insurance. Hartzell Gets FAA PMA Approval for Continental Starter Adapters

MT-Propeller Gains EASA Approvals For 7-Bladed Prop on PC-12

MT-Propeller received approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency for the world’s first 7-bladed Unducted Prop Fan Aircraft Propeller (designated MTV-47) on 20th July, with the EASA supplemental type certificate (STC) covering use with the Pilatus PC-12 powered by a single Pratt & Whitney PT6A turboprop. An FAA STC is “in progress,” said the German manufacturer. The installation of the 7-blade MTV-47 on the Pilatus PC-12 reduces ground-roll distance by approximately 10 percent and takeoff distance (over a 50 ft obstacle) by approximately 15 percent. When starting to develop the 7-bladed propeller for general aviation in 2016, MT-Propeller said it had “a similar vision as in 1999, when we developed the first 5-bladed prop for turboprops. Hartzell Engine Technologies has received PMA (Parts Manufacturer Approval) from the US FAA for its new line of starter adapters for Continental Aerospace piston aircraft engines. “As with all of Hartzell Engine Technologies’ product families, our Sky-Tec brand represents the highest levels of quality, innovation, and value,” stated HET’s president, Keith Bagley. “Our engineering teams have worked hard to identify issues with legacy starter adapters. We’ve taken that information and made some significant refinements in the manufacturing processes, which has enabled us to produce units that are much more robust.

Due to the smaller diameter of the 7blade propeller it has more ground clearance with less blade-tip erosion and exposure to FOD (foreign object damage). In addition the natural composite blades contribute significantly to the improved noise characteristics and also provide improved vibration damping characteristics “for almost vibration-free propeller operation.” Bonded-on nickel alloy leading edges meanwhile give the blades greater erosion protection. The blades have no life limitation and are repairable in case of FOD. Last year MT also started testing a 9bladed propeller which it said could find applications on electric-powered aircraft.
