PC-24 An Interview with Cedric Lescop, CEO Jetfly and Philippe Ceretti, Pilot The first customers have been flying the
PC-24 for some time now. What are their
experiences with the new Super Versatile Jet? And how has the PC-24 proven itself so far? Jetfly took delivery of its first PC-24 in
mid-September 2018. CEO Cédric Lescop
and pilot Philippe Ceretti talk about their first
two months with the PC-24. Pilatus Aircraft Ltd
Interview with Cédric Lescop Cédric, what is your personal highlight with the PC-24?
It was in Stans on 1 August 2014 when I first set eyes on the PC-24. I immediately knew this aircraft was going to be an international success over the next 20 years. I remember saying to my team: “that plane is going to be a game changer.”
After the first hours of use, what are the advantages of the PC-24?
The PC-24 offers many advantages such as the large quiet 8-seat cabin, flat floor and cargo door. But the real added value is that it can fly fast and land short! Until now, only the 1970 Dassault Falcon 10 or the new 50 million US dollar Dassault Falcon 7X and 8X aircraft offered a similar performance.
How did the rollout go? Did you experience any difficulties? If so, where?
The integration of the PC-24 went smoothly overall. We’ve been preparing for the delivery for two years, working closely with the Pilatus team and Luxembourg’s aviation authorities. The main difficulty for us was finalising all our manuals and procedures without previous experience on the plane. Jetfly became the first European operator with an approved Air Operator Certificate by the date of delivery – it was a challenge to have it ready on time!
What do Jetfly customers say about the PC-24?
Customers realise that Pilatus has created a market niche and know there is no other aircraft comparable to a PC-24. The PC-24’s closest competitor is probably the ten million US dollar Embraer Phenom 300 which has a 50 percent smaller cabin, or the 15 million US dollar Cessna Citation Latitude with a 50 percent bigger cabin, but neither of them can land on an 2,600 feet (800 metre) runway with eight passengers.

What feedback did you get after the flights with the PC-24?
We are approaching 110 flight hours on the plane. The first 25 hours were dedicated to pilot training without passengers on board. We started passenger flights on 10 October and we have done approximately 30 customer flights since then. Feedback has been very positive. Passengers love the cabin size. Most of them thought that the PC-12 and the PC-24 would have similar sized cabins so it is a welcome surprise when they discover a cabin which is 50 percent bigger than the PC-12.
What do you think about the interior of the PC-24?
The cabin seems very long, especially when you are seated at the back of the plane – the pilots are 30 feet (ten metres) away! The cabin is also very quiet in cruise. Jetfly chose a two club four configuration. This setup is very convivial and allows eight passengers to socialise during the flight. If you are four only, you can recline the seats enough to sleep comfortably. The cabin also boast s advanced connectivity, so you can manage the lighting and follow the aircraft position on your smartphone. The only missing options are an integrated expresso machine and an easier solution to swap from big to small luggage compartment, but I heard that it is under development, which is great news!
What was your most beautiful flight in a PC-24 so far?
We recently flew in France from Saint Tropez to Annemasse (200 miles/330 kilometres) in just 40 minutes and I suspect we are the only midsize jet to have flown that route this year!
Would you choose the PC-24 again? Of course YES, and I would have ordered more!

Interview with Philippe Ceretti What are your personal highlights on the PC-24?
The high level of technology mixed with conventional and proven building.
What was your first thought in the cockpit of the PC-24?
How does the PC-24 fly?
It was … that’s so pure! And it’s still the same every time I enter my new office! The design is neat, with nice curves on the side, and the cockpit is clear and optimised.
What aspects make the PC-24 a unique aircraft for pilots?
What is the biggest difference between the PC-12 and PC24 cockpits?
Very well. This jet gives you an immediate feeling of confidence.
The PC-24 has the benefits of a much larger aircraft in term of avionics and comfort, combined with the versatility of the PC-12. A very unique jet!
What do you think about the performance of the PC-24?
I’m positively surprised. Runway performance is great. It climbs straight to flight level 450 to get above traffic and weather. I have years of flying on Dassault Falcons, and the PC-24 gives me the same feeling of confidence and efficiency.
How do you rate the ACE™ cockpit environment?
There’s more room of course, screens are a bit bigger, fewer knobs as many things are now automatic, and without a long nose and the propeller, the view out the front is much better. But the transition from PC-12 to PC-24 is made easier by the avionics – APEX™ and ACE™ share the same roots.
What was your most beautiful flight in a PC-24 so far?
Just after delivery, we went for a promotional photo and video air-to-air shooting over Provence with Ov-10 Bronco, L-39 Albatros, Pilatus PC-7 and one of our PC-12s. It was superb flying in formation over such a beautiful area.
It’s nearly perfect. Of course, on a brand new aircraft, there is plenty of room for improvement and simplification especially in Electronic Check Lists (ECL) but I know that Pilatus is working on it. And what a pleasure to have the datalink to communicate with ground or load the latest weather in flight!
Well, I’m not an expert on the PC-24 (yet) ... 50 hours. But that’s enough to be addicted!
What aspects make the PC-24 a unique aircraft for pilots?
How many hours have you flown on other Pilatus aircraft?
The PC-24 has the benefits of a much larger aircraft in term of avionics and comfort, combined with the versatility of the PC-12. A very unique jet!
What do you think about the performance of the PC-24?
How many hours have you flown with the PC-24?
I’m a newcomer to Pilatus, having flown pretty much jets only so far. I discovered the PC-12 18 months ago and flew 400 fantastic hours with this great aircraft. To be honest, if I win the lottery, I won’t buy a Waco ... I’ll buy a PC-12 NG.
I’m positively surprised. Runway performance is great. It climbs straight to flight level 450 to get above traffic and weather. I have years of flying on Dassault Falcons, and the PC-24 gives me the same feeling of confidence and efficiency.

Two very fast Turboprop Aircraft make milestone flights over Antarctica
The TBMs crew in survival suits before their departure from Chilean Antárctica airport.
Tarbes, France, January 23, 2019 - Daher salutes the exceptional flights performed this month by owner-pilots on two TBM aircraft that traversed Antarctica. These achievements marked the first legs in earning the Polar Diamond Circumnavigator Diploma, recognized by the Fédérati on Aéronautique Internationale (the world’s governing body for aeronautical and astronautical records and sports), which has only been awarded once before. One of the TBM owner-pilots – Sebastian Diaz from Santiago, Chile – reunited three generations of pilots in flying his TBM 850 with Diaz’ father, 88-year-old Patricio (one of the oldest still fully-licensed TBM pilots); and Sebastian’s son, Sebast ian Jr., as copilots. The other TBM owner-pilot, Dierk Reuter from Chicago, USA, was flying with son Alex on his TBM 930, carrying cameras and an inflight tracking system benefitting from an Iridium GO! satellite connectivity device and support of Iridium Communications. In-flight photos were posted to Instagram in quasi real-time using Iridium messaging and software created by the Reuters. The 2,700 na utical mile trip for both aircraft from Santiago, Chile, to 75° South – the latitude required for the polar circumnavigator diploma – required three stopovers and much preparation, as Antarctica offers some of the most challenging environments for aviators. The temperature averages -56°F (-49°C) with constant winds.
On January 2, both TBMs continued to the British Antarctic Survey Sky-Blu base, at 807 nautical miles southwest, and reached the 75° South latitude turning point before returning to King George Island’s airport. On the way, TBM 930 owner Jim Baum arranged a fly-by of the National Geographic Orion – an ice-class exploration ship, enabling exciting pictures and video to be recorded. "We are impressed by the airmanship of such TBM owner-pilots as the Diaz family and Dierk Reuter, who carefully prepared this dual polar expedition,” commented Nicolas Chabbert, Senior Vice President of Daher Airplane Business Unit. “We salute the confidence they have in our TBM very fast turboprop aircraft, as they had to face extreme weather conditions flying over one of the world’s most hostile regions.” Dierk Reuter explained: “The journey from my hometown Chicago to 75S 71W and back c an be summarized in figures: 18,782 nautical miles, 64 hours, 3,080 gallons of jet fuel, and 19 stopovers. But it doesn’t tell the story about a pilot’s feeling to fly over the South Pole. The TBM is an awesome aircraft to explore the globe!”. Added Sebastian Diaz: “We also had the challenge of avoiding the freezing of the fuel because of the extreme low temperatures, for which we used more Prist [fue l system icing inhibitor] than usual. We also like to thank the Chilean Air Force for their generous hospitality at SCRM (Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva).”
Both TBMs had to fly over the huge continent – nearly 5 million square miles (12.9 mill ion square kilometers) in size, largely uninhabited and mostly covered in ice. In addition, central Antarctica presents high ground that rises to more than 8,000 feet (2,500 meters), with peak mountains reaching 16,050 feet (4,892 meters) – where clear blue skies can quickly turn to overcast whiteout conditions. On January 1, the two TBM aircraft left Punta Arenas in Chile: destination Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport on King George Island (part of Chile's Antárctica commune in Antarctica, and the continent’s northernmost airport). This airport serves the nearby village of Villa Las Estrellas and Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva – the most important Antarctic base of Chile – with a 4,232-foot (1,290-meter) gravel runway. The Swiss government has taken delivery of a PC-24 it ordered in 2014. The new so-called Super Versatile Jet will replace its existing small business jet and will be used mainly on government flights. Ueli Maurer, president of the Swiss Confederation, took delivery of the PC-24 at a simple handover ceremony held in Berne. The Swiss Air Force will operate the aircraft on behalf of the government. The aircraft has a white-grey livery with Swiss cross on the tail fin plus the words “Swiss Air Force”. The aircraft serial number is 121 – the 21st PC-24 to come off the production line. The military registration is T-786. “I’m delighted the Swiss government opted for a Swiss product, and will travel aboard the PC-24 – the new ‘Swiss Air Force One’ – in the future! This choice sends a very important signal for our brand-new business jet. I’m confident that other governments will adopt the PC-24 once they see the unrivalled opportunities and flexibility which it offers,” said Pilatus chairman, Oscar J. Schwenk. Pilatus says the “generous cabin with flat floor offers sufficient space for eight passengers plus crew and luggage. In addition to the spacious cabin and speed, government passengers will also enjoy other benefits such as the large cargo door fitted as standard and the jet’s ability to use very short runways. In other words, the Swiss federal councillors can now fly closer to their final destination, thereby saving precious time.” The aircraft will be used primarily for travel within Europe. The PC-24 has a range of 2,000 nautical miles (3,704 km) and flies at a speed of 440 knots (815 kmh). “Pilatus is proud and thanks the Swiss government for its confidence in the brand-new Swiss business jet by Pilatus. The management and all employees are delighted that from now on, the government will fly in typical Swiss style: with the Pilatus PC-24.” www.pilatus-aircraft.com

The Swiss Business Aviation Association (SBAA) has appointed Niclas von Planta as its new president. Von Planta is also vice president of Execujet Europe. The SBAA says its aim is to “unite all Swiss-based aviation professionals to help defend the future of the local business aviation industry. The association promotes and supports excellence and professionalism amongst its members, facilitating the application of best practices and the highest standards of operational safety. “I'm delighted to have been elected as president by the core members of the SBAA, and am looking forward to bringing my experience of the industry from the private to the public sphere,” said von Planta. “Switzerland is one of the fastest-growing regions in Europe for both private jet ownership and charter, and so it must be a leading light of excellence for operational safety and service.” He continued: “At ExecuJet, we pride ourselves on setting an example for others in the industry to follow by promoting industry-wide best practices through schemes such as Wyvern Wingman and IS-BAH, the International Standard for Business Air Handling. Going forward, the SBAA, in conjunction with EBAA, will be central to the preservation of these standards, protecting the future of business aviation both locally in Switzerland and across Europe.” SBAA vice chairman and treasurer Helene Niedhart said: “As the international hub
for business and diplomacy, Switzerland enjoys a significant position within the business aviation industry. Events such as the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, or EBACE, Europe's most important business aviation event, in Geneva, shine a light on our operations and so it is of the utmost importance that we continue to advance the infrastructure provision, service capabilities and safety standards for business jet users. Niclas is the ideal person to lead the SBAA, and will be instrumental to guiding us through the coming years.” www.sbaa.swiss
GE CT7 Selected For Civil Tiltrotor Leonardo has selected GE Aviation to supply a variant of its CT7 powerplant for the Italian manufacturer’s Next-Gen Civil Tiltrotor technology demonstrator, which is due to fly in 2023 and feature innovations such as semi-tilting nacelle, composite wings and a V-tail. A production version could follow as soon as 2030 if the programme goes ahead. According to tiltrotor program manager Andrea Artoli, the engine will be in the 2,000shp (around 1,500kW) class. The project is being supported by the EU’s Clean Sky 2 programme. www.leonardocompany.com
Asset Insight : Used Turboprops Selling Well According to U.S. market analyst Asset Insight, turboprop inventory decreased more than all the jet classes in January, falling 3.5%, a good sign that used inventory is being sold. On a measure of Maintenance Exposure to Ask Price (ETP), turboprops recorded a figure of 49.6%, lower (and therefore better) than all the jet classes and a 1.5% improvement on the previous month; while ask prices decreased “a nominal 0.4%”. Turboprop inventory decreased by ten units in the month, but asset quality remained virtually unchanged and remained within the “very good” range. According to Asset Insight president Tony Kioussis, “We anticipate demand and marketability to remain strong for turboprops.” www.assetinsight.com
Cirrus Deliveries Strongest in a Decade Cirrus has reported that it delivered 63 SF50 single-engine jets in 2018, leaving the fleet approaching the 100-mark worldwide, and 380 of its SR20/SR22 piston singles. Single engine deliveries increased 7% over 2017. Todd Simmons, president for customer experience for Cirrus, reported: “Our annual performance demonstrates our long-term commitment to continued core growth; our disciplined approach to maturing our turbine product line; the expansion of Cirrus Services; and another year that validates our customer-focused enterprise strategy.” It represents the fifth consecutive year that Cirrus has delivered more than 300 SR-Series aircraft. The company is expanding still at its three main locations: Duluth, Knoxville, and Grand Forks. The second generation Vision Jet, the G2, has now been introduced and has improved performance, an autothrottle and an upgraded cabin. www.cirrusaircraft.com

Where Are They Now:
First Cessna Caravan 208B Blackhawk XP140 Conversion Update Last year, Air Alliance delivered the Cessna Caravan 208B to the owner after a successful installation of the first Blackhawk XP140 Engine+ Upgrade. Now, after over 400 hours of flight, the owner says they are enjoying quicker lifts and greater payloads. Angela Hickling, the owner of “British Parachute School/Skydive Langar” in Langar / UK, cites two main reasons for choosing the XP140 upgrade: the powe r and the engine fitting. “The 867 SHP is so powerful, the aircraft climbs so much faster than with the standard [PT6A-114A] engine,” said Hickling. “We can now fly 4 lifts with 15 Skydivers on each lift up to 15,000 ft in the same time as we used to fly 3 lifts with 14 Skydivers.” The Blackhawk XP140 Engine+ Upgrade is EASA-certified (EASA STC10057646) for the Cessna Caravan 208 and 208B. The upgrade replaces the existing Pratt & Whitney PT6A114/114A (600/675 SHP) engine with a PT6A-140 (867 SHP) engine, resulting in a 28% increase in available horsepower. This additional power translates into a 21% decrease in takeoff distance, a 37% increase in climb rate, and 195 KTAS maximum cruise speed while still in compliance with the stringent European Noise Regulations. Furthermore, Skydive Langar’s XP140 installation was made simpler compared to competitors because the existing cowling, engine mount, and exhaust system was retained. “When the engine was fitted, it took under 2 weeks,” said Hickling. “There was no need to alter the cowling or the exhaust, so the engine just slotted into place.” The XP140
upgrade is only 2 inches (5.08 centimeters) longer than the original PT6A-114A engine. The extra lengt h is aft of the engine mounts, allowing the truss to be retained with no changes. Additionally, the XP140 has a single exhaust port and connects to the existing exhaust system. The “plug and play” configuration of the XP140 allows for reduced downtime, saving Skydive Langar both time and money. Further XP140 cost savings come in the form of operating costs. Based on an average of 60,000 NM flown per yea r, owners and operators can expect to save 45 cents USD per nautical mile flown. This equates to an annual savings of $36,000 USD, or $360,000 USD saved before overhaul based on the XP140’s 4,000-hour TBO. The base TBO extension from 3,600 hours to 4,000 hours further reduces Skydive Langar’s hot section inspection and overhaul budget. The 400-hour increase reduces engine operating costs and delays the expense of overhaul by about a year. Skydive Langar also enjoys lower maintenance costs and increased reliability from Pratt & Whitney Canada’s New Engine Enhanced Warranty of 1,000 hours, no calendar limit, with limited coverage on primary parts through the 4,000-hour TBO. “The aircraft has now flown over 400 hours and has just returned from a 200-hour service with no problems,” said Hickling. “We look forward to another great year with this aircraft – with a great engine!”

PARLIMENTRY 2.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 01/03/2019 12:06 Page 1
More than 200 British Members of Parliament now support General Aviation SHOWCASE Britain’s All-Party Parliamentary Group setting an example of successfully supporting General Aviation
British Members of Parliament in Washington DC (L to R): The Rt Hon Sir Michael Fallon MP, Ellis Turrell (APPG Secretariat), Dr Rupa Huq MP, Sheryll Murray MP, Mark Pritchard MP, The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Matthew Bolshaw (APPG Secretariat)
The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for General Aviation
General Aviation in Great Britain flourishes despite not having much input from government. In fact, the only time aviation really encounters officials is via the national regulator – the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). This lack of government involvement is down to the fact that aviation is privately run. From airfields to flight training, and aviation engineering to air traffic control – in the Unite d Kingdom the government isn’t overly involved. Many argue that this lack of governmental interference has been a good thing. It has allowed general aviation to prosper by developing along commercial lines, unencumbered by bureaucrats. However, in other ways the absence of ministerial oversight means that no-one is looking out for the broader interests of general aviation - despite the sector being the grass-roots of the £64 billion (€73 billion) UK aviation industry. But now, thanks to a large group of interested parliamentarians, things have begun to change in terms of the high-level support for the industry. The catalyst has been a dramatic growth in population. Since the year 2000 the UK’s population has grown by nearly 10 million people. This in turn has created unprecedented housing pressure. Over the years, airfields have been viewed as flat, relatively easy places upon which to build new homes. Whilst aviators know that in order to take-off you must have somewhere to land, that hasn’t been the main concern of planners when deciding on the fate of an airfield. Planning decisions are largely handled as a local matter, meaning that house-building has consistently been placed ahead of mainta ining a strategic airfield network. In 2017 an MP by the name of Byron Davies became sufficiently concerned about the threat to the very existence of UK aviation, that he set up a small group of politicians from across the political spectrum to fight for general aviation. In the UK, All-Party Parliamentary Groups (or APPGs) exist on just about every subject under the sun. They attract members from all political parties, act in a non-political way, and usually campaign to raise awareness about their particular subject or concern. From cancer research to promoting the British pub, there are 685 APPGs in existence today. Yet the group on General Aviation is now the biggest of them all. In its first two years, over 200 parliamentarians have joined, motivating the group to go well beyond the original remit of tackling aerodrome planning laws. Current Chair of the APPG, the Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP explains, “We decided to address all the issues facing general aviation by creating expert Working Groups. Today we have seven panels covering Airfields, Airspace, Tax & Regulations, Heritage, STEM Jobs & Growth, Manufacturing & Engineering, and Drones & Model Flying.”
Aero Friedrichshafen 10 - 13 April 2019 Hall A4 -321 ( co-exhibitor at GA Buyer Europe Stand )
In each area, the lawmakers engage gov ernment and argue for important legal changes. For example, during the past year, planning policy has finally been altered at a national level to recognise the importance of maintaining a national airfield network. Meanwhile meetings have taken place between MPs and government ministers on subjects as diverse as Value Added Tax (VAT) charged on flight training, scrapping red-tape that prevents heritage aircraft from flying and promoting aviation apprenticeships to get more young people reaching for the skies. The Group works hard to educate all policymakers about the importance of general aviation. They focus on its broader economic and social impact. And, they are starting to shift long-held attitudes towards the sector, as well as pushing for more aviationfriendly policies from the UK government. Meanwhile, the All-Party Group has been reaching out further afield. Last year MPs and Lords travelled to Washington, DC, to meet their equivalents in the US Congress, before visiting Oshkosh for the world’s biggest airshow. The group also attended AERO Friedrichshafen and this year they even plan to have a presence on the AvBuyer stand to discuss their successful approach with fellow Europeans. “In the USA we found that the largest interest group in Congress is also on the subject of general aviation”, explains Shapps, “but we have yet to discover equivalent groups in other European capitals.” The secretariat of the British cross-party group has been taken aback by the level of parliamentary aviation interest, admitting that when they first started they thought it might attract a narrow group of already knowledgeable MPs. They claim that the secret has been to encompass everything from high-tech aviation jobs, to encouraging research and development into clean electric flight. Protecting Great Britain’s airfield network may have provided the catalyst for UK lawmakers to form the All-Party Group, but now it is up and running their mission has become much more ambitious. Shapps explains, “Th e UK government has an official policy of making the country the best place in the world for general aviation. We are keen to assist in making that happen and with more than 200 parliamentarians involved, general aviation is getting attention at a level it has never enjoyed before.” Now the All-Party Parliamentary Group on General Aviation (APPG-GA) hopes to share their experience whilst learning from other European politicians and policymakers who share their passion for general aviation.

IAOPA Celebrates Growing Influence
The piston segment of the GA aircraft market posted lacklustre performance in the fourth quarter of 2018, finishing with 1,139 units. While 5% ahead of last year, independent analyst Mike Potts said it “could have been a lot better.”
The grouping of Europe’s national AOPAs (Aircraft Owner and Operator Associations), IAOPA Europe – which is affiliated to the IAOPA based in the US that represents all the world’s AOPAs – says it now has “more than 15,000 members” and reports that “Belarus and Belgium are active again,” and “Hungary is to return to active status as well.”
Only six piston makers delivered more than 20 airplanes last year. Leading the piston segment by a wide margin is Cirrus, with 380 deliveries (40.6 percent of the entire piston market). The Cirrus total was slightly more than 7% ahead of its last year total, which was 355 units. Textron’s Cessna unit was far behind in second place and losing ground from where they were a year ago. Cessna finished the year with 193 deliveries this year, compared with 238 last year. The fourth quarter was similarly weak, down to 68 units this year compared with 98 a year ago. In third place was Piper, which is having a resurgence in the piston segment with 136 units this year compared with 90 last year. For the quarter Piper was also well ahead, with 44 this year against 35 in 2017. Italian manufacturer Tecnam captured the fourth position in single engine piston deliveries with 76, up from 60 last year. Tecnam’s quarter to quarter results were also better this year, with 16 units against 13, although the company clearly had no discernable fourth quarter surge. Diamond showed what must have been disappointing results with just 48 deliveries compared with 68 last year. For the quarter Diamond was even, reporting 14 units in each year, and like Tecnam, showing no surge worth the mention. Germany’s Extra was sixth in piston deliveries with 24, down from 25 the year before. Its quarterly results were slightly better, with seven this year compared to six in 2017. Pipistrel, based in Slovenia, broke into the “above 20” category with 22 deliveries, up from 19 last year. In the “below 20 for the year” category is Cubcrafters with 16, Textron’s Beechcraft unit with 15; Mooney with 14; and American Champion with 13. The piston twin market is thriving, however. Total piston twin sales are up 24% over last year at 185 units, up from 149 in 2017. Last year’s total was up 26% from 2016 when there were 118. Diamond led the market with 86 piston twins, up from 69. Tecnam was second with 41, up from 39, followed closely by Piper which had 39, up from 18. In fourth place was Textron’s Beechcraft with 19, down from 23.

AOPA Russia Welcomes General Aviation Visits According to IAOPA Europe, Evgeny Kabanov of AOPA-Russia assures visiting pilots that there continue to be improvements in foreign GA aircraft flight support and corresponding procedures in the vast country. “AOPA-Russia is confident that foreign VFR and IFR aircraft can fly to Russia (and back!) or through Russia from west to east…100LL and Jet A-1 fuels are available in a selected entry-airports, landing and fuelling is possible on domestic GA-friendly airfields. Please remember each flight needs a prior entry and routing permit, make sure you apply at least two weeks in advance. “Simplified visa formalities and AOPA-Russia support turn Russian terra incognita into an attractive summer season destination to explore. Contact AOPA-Russia and provide them with your desired itinerary and route along with registration, airworthiness (permit to fly) and insurance certificates in PDF format. They are most willing to help.” www.aopa.ru
IAOPA Europe has 30 national affiliates and its membership has increased by 8%, while IAOPA overall currently represents more than 400,000 members in 79 countries around the world. Dr. Michael Erb, IAOPA senior vice president European region, said “The region has been very busy, especially with the creation and implementation of new European-wide aviation regulations…IAOPA Europe briefed Members of EU Parliament on the importance of GA on 10 January 2018, in conjunction with the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) and the European Regional Aerodromes Community (ERAC). Michael Erb (AOPA Germany) pointed out that general aviation, with access to over 5,000 airports in Europe, offers a more robust infrastructural network than scheduled commercial air transport. However, in comparison to the USA, the IFR approach procedures, which would permit weather-independent flights, are still lacking. General aviation airports with all-weather capabilities are essential to the safety and efficiency of general aviation in Europe. On a positive note, Erb noted that the European GNSS Agency is working to set up GPSbased approach procedures for general aviation airports, but many nation-states are reluctant to participate. The support of MEPs is enormously important to reverse this trend. www.iaopa.eu
Piper Order Increase Prompts Expansion Piper Aircraft has reported that deliveries of its piston and turbine singles/twins has increased by almost 50%, to “the highest level in ten years.” The actual figure was +48% for 2018, along with a 38 year-onyear increase in aircraft billings. Piper says its “segment-leading” growth was distributed across both primary product lines, Trainer and M-Class aircraft. Global Piper trainer demand increased more than 50% YOY. Sales of the robust single engine Archer grew by nearly 50% YOY, while twin-engine Seminole deliveries rose 117%. Additionally, sales of Piper’s M-Class products, which include the M350, M500 and the M600, expanded by 36%, driving Piper’s total 2018 aircraft billings to $263 million, up by more than $71 million over 2017. International deliveries of Piper products showed growth of 12%, with an increase in M-Class deliveries to Brazil being a primary factor. The continued rise in demand for Piper trainers drove order backlog to nearly 700 aircraft entering 2019, and “had a positive Vero Beach community impact with a 14% employment increase to 1,000 plus total.” “2018 was an exceptional year for Piper Aircraft,” said Simon Caldecott, president and CEO. “Over the past year, we have increased strategic investments in our facilities and products to better position Piper Aircraft to support the growing but stable demand for our diverse product lines. We also have expanded our efforts and investments to drive innovation while achieving strong financial results.” www.piper.com

Flying for Fun:
Freedom of Movement for N-REG Aircraft Aircraft Guaranty Corporation had the chance to sit down with one of our clients, Oscar A. Avalle. Oscar was excited to share about his life and love for flying with our community. Lets see what he had to say. Aircraft Guaranty Corporation (AGC): "Tell us about your family and where you currently reside." Oscar Avalle: "I am married to my beautiful wife, and I have 4 boys: 20, 18, 8 and 6. I currently li ve in Washington D.C, but fly out of Gaithersburg, MD (KGAI). AGC: "I loved the pictures of your plane below. Tell me its story." Oscar Avalle: "I bought my Mooney M20C in 2002. Since then I added many different features to the plane. I upgraded the avionics, I installed vortex generators and overall I kept the plane in top shape." AGC: "What is your favorite part of flying?" Oscar Avalle: "What I love a bout flying is the feeling you get knowing that you are in control of a wonderful machine in a medium that is extremely beautiful and challenging at the same time. At the end of the day there are no gray areas in the air. You have to land your plane." AGC: "Wow, What an incredible statement. What is your dream plane?" Oscar Avalle: "My dream plane would be a Cirrus SR22T latest generation." AGC: "What is your dream flight or place to go to?" Oscar Avalle: "I would like to fly my plane across the Atlantic to Europe and spend my holidays flying across Europe with my family." AGC: "Where is the most interesting place you have been, and why?" Oscar Avalle: "For work I was posted in Guatemala, Central America. I flew my Mooney to Guatemala and during my 4
years in the country I flew my plane across the Regio n visiting wonderful places in Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador." AGC: "What is your occupation?" Oscar Avalle: "I work for an International Financial Institution" AGC: "Why and when did you register in trust?" Oscar Avalle: "It gives me the flexibility to own an airplane registered in the US." AGC: "What are the biggest benefits from doing it?" Oscar Avalle: "My assignments outside the US are temporary, so changing the registry simply does not make sense." AGC: "Are you using your plane for work or fun?" Oscar Avalle: "I use my plane mainly for fun. Flying is usually what I do when I have spare time. It's what I love." AGC: "What kind of music do you listen to?" Oscar Avalle: "I love jazz rock and classical music. I love to fly listening to those genres of music." AGC: "What is your favor ite book?" Oscar Avalle: "Goethe's Faust." AGC: "Oscar, It was a pleasure to have the chance to talk with you. On behalf of Aircraft Guaranty Corporation, we thank you. Where can others find you online and on social media?" Oscar Avalle: "I appreciate it very much, thank you. You can find me on YouTube and Facebook with the usernames above. AERO Friedrichshafen: April 10 – 13, 2019 The Global Show for General Aviation
Aero to Take Off With Record Participation The 27th AERO, with its comprehensive range of products and services on offer, will held from April 10 to 13, 2019, on Lake Constance as Europe’s general aviation center: The spectrum of aircraft exhibited in Friedrichshafen will extend from gliders and ultra-lights to Echo class planes through to helicopters and business jets. Drones for civilian use and vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) air taxis of the future will play a role at AERO. Electric flight will be even more prominently exhibited at the e-flight-expo. Avionics Avenue, the Engine Area, and Be a Pilot are areas that will round out AERO’s specialized exhibits and programming. The Flight Simulator Area will appeal to both beginners and experienced pilots among the trade visitors. Klaus Wellmann, Messe Friedrichshafen CEO, and Roland Bosch, Head of AERO General Aviation, are delighted that so many renowned general aviation manufacturers will be present at AERO Friedrichshafen with exciting innovations. "The international trade fair not only shows the current variety of models available for general aviation but also provides an outlook on concepts of the future,” explains Show Director Tobias Bretzel. With more than 700 exhibitors from 38 countries (as of Feb. 21, 2019), AERO 2019 will set a new record in terms of industry participation.
Details on the specialist areas of AERO 2019: Gliding AERO Friedrichshafen started with glider manufacturers more than 40 years ago. Whether single or double-seater and from training gliders to the "Super Orchidee,” visitors will be able to find everything. The German manufacturers in particular are regarded as world leaders and have a long tradition. Manufacturers from Eastern Europe and South Africa will now also be exhibiting numerous innovations on Lake Constance. In addition to the proven winch and towing aircraft launching system, retractable propulsion units with various propulsion systems, such as piston and electric motors, are increasingly being used.
Ultralight Aircraft Ultralight aircraft are part of the sector with the most innovation in light aviation. For example, ultralights in the form of gliders or powered aircraft, as well as gyrocopters or UL helicopters, are represented in large numbers at the AERO: starting with the puristic 120-kilogram single-seater, which comes close to the erstwhile idea of extremely simple ultra-light flying, and continuing all the way up to the new 600-kilogram weight class. A decision has been made to increase the maximum take-off weight for three-axle ultralight aircraft from 472 to 600 kilograms throughout Europe. This regulation will be implemented promptly in Germany. The fair will also offer information on whether and how previous 472-kilogram ultralights can be equipped to take advantage of the higher weight class.
Business Aviation Business aviation will again be a focus of the AERO. Piston-driven aircraft, but above all turboprops and jets are at its core. Thanks to last year’s decision by EASA, the European aviation agency, to permit instrument flight of single-engine turboprops in commercial aviation, the manufacturers of these aircraft can look forward to rising order numbers. Classic twin-engine turboprops will also be on show at Lake Constance. After a few mixed years, signs suggest that stronger demand for single- and multi-engine business jets will return, strengthened by positive economic developments in the United States and Germany.
Powered Aircraft
AERODrones/UAS Expo This year’s AERODrones/UAS Expo special exhibition can be found near the manned aviation area of e-flight-expo. The various application possibilities and the topic of drone driving licenses prove the relevance of civilian drones in aviation. In cooperation with UAV Dach, Germany’s association for unmanned aerial vehicles, aircraft of this category that are equipped with state-ofthe-art sensor and measurement technology will be presented. In the outdoor area, there will be a Flight Zone for Unmanned Aerial Systems. For the first time, aclosed trade event for police departments will take place in Hall A2 on the first two days of the fair.
Engine Area The Engine Area is well established at AERO. Once again, modern aircraft engines from various manufacturers will be presented in a separate area, including conventional combustion engines and innovative electric and hybrid propulsion systems. The focus is also on maintenance and engine management as well as development of sustainable fuels. Sustainable fuel and power2liquid are also covered in the AERO Conferences area.
Avionics Avenue On Avionics Avenue in Hall A6, everything revolves around aircraft on-board equipment. Navigation and collision warning devices, apps for flight planning, and the Headset Test Area will be presented. The ADS-B ultimatum, which expires in a few months (in the USA at the end of 2019, in Europe in June 2020), forces aircraft owners to retrofit the new transponder technology. The changeover is guaranteeing full order books for avionics suppliers. This change applies to all aircraft owners whose aircraft fly faster than 250 knots and weigh more than 5.7 tons. There will be a special presentation on the ADS-B upgrade at the Business Aviation Conference.
Flight Simulator Area
The leading manufacturers will be represented on Lake Constance, from one- and two-motor piston engine planes to aircraft with propeller turbines. This large variety of aircraft types forms the backbone within general aviation. The new model years of proven Echo class planes will be on exhibit, along with several aircraft making a premiere at the trade fair. In view of an impending pilot shortage, enrollment is currently very high at flight schools worldwide. As a result, manufacturers of traditional one- and two-motor piston engine airplanes are experiencing an enormous surge in demand, especially for their training aircraft. These include many propeller planes with single turbines, which have recently been certified in Europe for commercial air traffic flying under instrument flight operation conditions, giving manufacturers new sales markets.
e-flight-expo Ten years ago, AERO Friedrichshafen launched e-flight-expo, the world’s first exhibition for electric aircraft. When this area was launched, the idea of powering aircraft electrically still seemed futuristic. New challenges like air pollution and climate change are requiring new
28 GA BUYER EUROPE APRIL 2019
solutions and approaches worldwide. More and more airplane types, including commercial aircraft, are to be powered by electric or hybrid propulsion systems in the future. In addition, corporations and start-ups are involved in the development of vertical take-off electric flight projects. Several taxi drones are already flying in test operation. At e-flight-expo, these concepts for the future can be seen, along with electric aircraft that can already be ordered.

Visitors will once again find the Flight Simulator Area (FSA) in Hall A6. The focus there will be on professional pilot training, simulators, and software solutions for beginners who want to find out for themselves what controlling an aircraft or helicopter feels like. A presentation of simulators approved for training is also planned. Accompanying presentations will take place in the Forum next to the FSA.
Helicopter Hangar Helicopters are becoming increasingly important at AERO Friedrichshafen. In the Helicopter Hangar in Hall B5, the central venue is the joint booth of the German Helicopter Association. The stand includes exhibits of the member companies from a wide variety of industries, ranging from air rescue to passenger transport through to working aviation. The German Helicopter Club will also be represented as an important partner. Helicopters with piston engines or turbines for training or private and commercial use will be on display. The Heli Forum, which is integrated directly into Hall B5, offers trade presentations on current industry topics.

Be a Pilot The pilot recruiting program "Be a Pilot” will continue this year. It offers the opportunity for visitors interested in flight training to meet with representatives from flight schools and training providers. As a result of the worldwide increase in air traffic and the resulting growth in airline fleets, the demand for pilots continues unabated, making pilot training an indispensable topic at AERO Friedrichshafen. Airlines, business aviation providers, and working aviation companies, including helicopter companies, need junior pilots and flight instructors.

Diamond Aircraft and Austro Engine have agreed a partnership with PistonPower to offer the Diamond Airframe and Engine Program on all new DA20, DA40 XLT, DA40NG, DA42-VI and DA62 aircraft, as well as in-service Diamond aircraft, through their authorised sales representatives and authorised service centers worldwide. The operator pays an hourly rate based on utilisation which covers parts and labor for unscheduled and scheduled maintenance. “The program not only provides protection from unforeseen and unscheduled maintenance expenses but also allows predictability of having a fixed budget for the operation of the aircraft or fleet,” said Diamond. Scott McFadzean, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Industries Inc., said: “There has been a real need for this type of program among piston aircraft owners for years. Hybrid-electric propulsion systems: Hybrid-ele
powering new plane concepts for a sustainable flight future With the demand for air transport further rising, the damaging impact that flight has on the environment is also threatening to increase. The aircraft industry has taken action and set itself clear targets to limit emissions and noise in the future. However, with the existing aircraft technologies having undergone continuous efficiency increases over the last few decades, there is little potential le ft for further improvement towards increased sustainability and lower emissions. To achieve the ambitious targets, completely new aircraft and propulsion concepts are required.
SP70D and EPUIII
For Siemens eAircraft, hybrid-electric propulsion systems are the underlying key technology: they enable the use of non-fossil fuels or completely new technologies like fuel cells to generate power for flight, and they also ope n up new design spaces for aircraft developers – with energy generation being separated from thrust generation the drive components - i.e. they can be physically separated and allocated in a manner that reduces drag and noise emissions.
SP260D A-Model - Eviation Alice Aircraft
On the way to a hybrid-electric flight future, Siemens eAircraft together with strong partners is developing complete propulsion systems across a variety of power class es. With the Siemens eAircraft sub 100kW electric motors, such as the newly developed robust and low-maintenance 70kW motor “SP70D” that will be propelling Bye Aerospace’s Sun Flyer 2, Siemens is contributing to the electrification of small and light aircraft. Electric sport and training planes offer a cost-efficient and sustainable alternative to flight schools and the aerobatic scene – but they will also play a key role in bringing the experience of electric flight to pilots and provide first-hand experience in handling and maintaining these systems. This will be a key step in laying the groundwork for societal acceptance of the technology and its benefits. Hundreds of planes will likely be sold in this segment in the next few years, with effective flight durations projected to stretch well above one hour during the same timeframe.
Smartflyer
However, a motor like the SP70D has the potential to enable entirely new concepts also for aircraft with more than just one or two seats, and eVTOL: several motors can - thanks to their hollow-shaft design - be stacked, or set-up, in a decentralised serial-hybrid system architecture. Together with Apus, the four-seated Apus i-2 concept is envisaged, in which the Sie mens motor is combined with innovative fuel cell technology. Moreover, the innovation alliance IBEFA from the southeastern metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg has just presented plans to realise a six-seated flying technology demonstrator with up to seven SP70D electric motors, the Apus i-6, together with universities and industry partners. Sun Flyer 2 and elfin
Apus i-6
Also the SP260D, the 260 kW electric motor with remar kable power-density which was first tested and presented on board the aerobatic Extra 330LE and has since undergone design changes to even further increase safety and efficiency, proves to serve a variety of purposes. Integrated into a hybrid-electric architecture it will power the four-seated Swiss cruise aircraft “Smartflyer”. And, in a system architecture with three of these motors in a pusher confi guration, it will also take the nine-seater “Alice” battery-electric commuter airplane designed, by the start-up Eviation, into the skies. To expand hybrid-electric flight into even larger aircraft classes, however, the power density of the existing propulsion systems will still have to increase further. “Up to now, you have been able to get about a kilowatt of power from a kilogram of electric machine . But with the SP260D it is already five times as much,” says Dr. Frank Anton, head of the eAircraft unit at Siemens. “For a plane the size of an ATR72 or even an A320, you will need 10, 12 kilowatts, and, actually, 20 would be ideal.” Siemens expects to receive first test results from the development of a 2 MW electric motor and a 4 MW generator that has been designed in collaboration with the Univer sity of Nottingham in the summer of 2019. The teams are confident that their innovative prototypes’ power density will set new standards.
SP200D Model - CityAirbus
Besides electrification of the general aviation and commercial airplane markets, Siemens eAircraft also keeps an eye on the rapidly developing new flight segment of Urban Air Mobility: the 200 kW direct-drive electric motor “SP200D” has been specifically designed for the electric octocopter CityAirbus demonstrator, and thanks to its extremely high torque-density perfectly serves the specific requirements of eVTOL. These new aircraft concepts could revolutionise commuting within cities – and by propelling them, the Siemens flying electric drive systems could help improve the environmental footprint of not only the aviation industry, but also of the entire transport sector.

Swiss Helicopters
Enters the
DRONE
BUSINESS
Rather Than Fighting It! Tired of the prejudice the manned aircraft industry has against drones, Swiss Helicopter decided to embrace it instead. “Some helicopter operators see drones as a danger for their business,” says the company. “Swiss Helicopter doesn’t.” The management of Swiss Helicopter, a company born in 2012 by merging several helicopter operators, carefully analysed the situation and discovered that there are two way s to cope with drones: “Either you stand still and let yourself be overtaken by the innovation, or you act proactively and set up the industrial standards and procedures required to operate drones safely in the airspace.” Clearly, Swiss Helicopter went for the latter option and sees drones as capable of enriching its business, while widening its range of products and services. “Three years after the proje ct kicked off, the operation is getting ready for the market. A lot of experience has been gained, but a lot of questions are still unanswered,” says the company. “Actually, the most critical aspect of marketing drone services is to be accepted as a realistic and professional service provider. Too many non-professional drone operators have already performed jobs below the required standard or promised unrealistic achievements, resulting in a very defensive purchase behavior by potential customers.” For example, the physical limitations of optics and detectors require a certain dimension (and therefore weight) of equipment, which may not be carried by a lowcost drone. “Airmanship is not something that can be bought with money at an electronic megastore. It is something which must be acquired with experien ce and appropriate training by aviation professionals.” That’s what Swiss Helicopter is trying to do, including being ahead of the regulation, which is currently being developed and implemented. This is especially the case regarding BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line Of Sight) operations. It believes another important distinction is between full automatic operations and assisted operations. In the case of full aut omatic operations, these have yet to be implemented in airspace with other users. Meanwhile assisted operations are possible, supported by adequate technological solutions and operative skills.
To help assess the correct hazards and set up a comprehensive risk matrix, the Swiss regulator FOCA uses a so-called SORA process. Air and ground risks, as well as the respective mitigations and limitations in oper ation, are considered and analysed. “This is obviously important when operating a drone with a MTOM of 88 kg with BVLOS capability,” notes Swiss Helicopter.
Is It a Mini Helicopter?
If you look into the hangar of Swiss Helicopter in Ticino, you will see the 2.3 meters long Dragon SDO50V2, manufactured by Swissdrones Operating AG, standing next to the other “big“ helicopters in the fleet, like the AW109, the EC120B, AS350 or Guimbal Cabri. The weird thing about it may not be the size, but the intermeshing rotors – evident sign of use of the Flettnertype drive. For the manufacturer of the drone the decision to take this approach was a clear one. The 20-30 percent drive power, which usually must be routed to a conventional tail rotor, can instead be used almost completely to generate lift via the main tr ansmission. Longer endurance, of more than two hours, as well as enhanced stability, even in heavy and gusty wind conditions, are among the benefits. Swiss Helicopter flies up to 30 kg of useful load, which is still possible with an endurance of around one hour’s flight time. With 20 kg of useful load, the full flight time is available.
Same High Standards As For Helicopters
From the beginning, Swiss Helicopter treated the flight operation in the same way as for a conventional rotorcraft, rather than looking at the drone as an unmanned toy. As a consequence, the same high standards apply as for a “big” helicopter.
All drone operators are experienced commercial pilots (either helicopter or airplane) because of the airmanship required. Moreover, the operation of the payload with satisfaction for the final c ustomers introduces a high workload and requires MCC (Multi Crew Cooperation) capabilities and understanding, because of the coordination and positioning in the space. “This is not easy at all, with the pilot not being on board of the aircraft themselves,” said the company. The Type Rating training requires about 40 hours of theoretical training covering all the systems on the flying
WIR SPRECHEN DEUTSCH - ASTRID AYLING: +44 (0)208 549 5024 - Astrid@avbuyer.com
platform and on the g round control station. Seven additional hours are required for the flight training, which cover standard, non-standard and abnormal procedures. Also, the preflight and post-flight procedures are important, and focus on the preparation for ground transport of the drone. The whole system, including NAV/COM/Datalink is currently installed in a special inhouse converted ambulance. The stretcher is used as a transport tool for the drone, allowing it to be repositioned easily so it can be close to the requested flight operation zone.
Services Offered by Swiss Helicopters
Currently, Swiss Helicopter is capable of offering thermography on its own, along with worldwide “best standard” LIDAR solutions, together with the company HELIMAP. The operation is limited to VLOS (Visual Line Of Sight) for the moment, but Swiss Helicopter is working with the FOCA to get BVLOS approval. There is also the possibility of integrating different sensors and payloads from third parties. “Please ask our operation office to schedule a meeting to discuss the possible solutions,” it says. Swiss Helicopter is also providing training services, with instructors who normally work under its own ATOs. “This ensures the highest possible qual ity standard.”
Research & Development Arm Created
The increased workload in implementing solutions, as well as the necessity to research new technological approaches to the drone operation market, led the management of Swiss Helicopter Group to set up a dedicated R&D branch. Swiss Helicopter Engineering was founded in the winter of 2018-19, and is now working on several projects, of which the most interesting is a drone detector. This is being developed together with the University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI), Flarm technologies and Swissdrones Operating AG. “It is important to be ahead of the market and the users if you want to be successful in this new branch of aviation industry,” said Swiss Helicopter. “And it is important to do it with the correct, safe approach.” T Swiss H elicopter SA T +41 91 745 44 88 www.swisshelicopter.ch

Swiss helicopter manufacturer Kopter has completed initial flight tests using the third prototype of its SH09 light single, which is powered by a Honeywell HTS900 engine.
avionics, cabin interiors and optional equipment that will be available to customers. An additional aircraft, Pre-Series 5 (PS5) will be added to the test fleet to specifically cover the extension of the flight envelope towards both hot & high conditions and low temperature operations.
Kopter Group Grows
The build-up of PS4 is “set to start in the next few months,” said Kopter. “An important evolution is the enlarged cabin of PS4, allowing to carry one more passenger, i.e. up to 8 passengers in addition to the pilot, resulting from the new design of the fuel tank system. The payload capabilities of the SH09 are confirmed, while the maximum take-off weight has been increased to 2,850 kg (3,000kg for external loads),” added the company. Once completed, PS4 will join the flight test activities of P3 in Sicily to contribute to reach the Type Certification. It will essentially be employed to develop the different mission configurations of the SH09, testing
Kopter Group has some 300 employees based in Switzerland – its corporate and engineering offices are close to Zurich, while the production and assembly facilities are located in the cities of Mollis and Näfels. In the former, Kopter Group has started to plan a new 66,000-sq-ft pre-assembly building with construction due to begin in the third quarter of 2019. The facility is expected to become fully operational in 2021. The new building will house production of dynamic components such as rotor blades, gearboxes, and rotor heads, as well as testing rigs and a central warehouse. Kopter’s existing 13,800-sq-ft facility will be used for final assembly of the SH09 light turbine-powered helicopter and administrative offices. The combined new facility at Mollis will be the company-wide center for production, assembly, flight-testing, training, and maintenance of the SH09. Kopter expects to ramp helicopter production up to 50 units annually at Mollis within the next five years and fabricate an additional 150 subassemblies for final assembly at facilities planned for the U.S. and Asia. According to Kopter, projected growth is expected to boost employment at Mollis from the current 100 to 400 within five years. Kopter Group CEO Andreas Löwenstein said the new facility will, “allow us to work in the best conditions and to serve our customers worldwide.” As GA Buyer closed for press, Kopter was preparing to exhibit the SH09 at the Heli-Expo show in Atlanta, Georgia (4-7 March). It was to exhibit a full-scale SH09 mock-up in seven-seat passenger configuration in the “Grand Canyon Golden Eagle” livery of Papillon Helicopters (whose sister company, lessor Rainier Heli International, has ordered five) . It was also taking along a motion-based simulator built by VRM Switzerland, which has entered into a strategic alliance with Kopter Group. www.marenco-swisscopter.com

Airborne’s LINK Stars in Bulgaria
Coptersafety has installed a new TRU Simulation + Training Level D full-flight simulator for the Airbus H125 helicopter, and estimates the device will be available for training use from May following evaluation and approval by EASA.
Wiener Neustadt, Austria-based Airborne Technologies says its Airborne LINX surveillance system has been fitted to a Bulgarian Border Guard AW109 helicopter. The company noted, “more and more European police forces are integrating this capability into their fleets and joining the LINX club.”
Prototype P3 will now be transferred to Pozzallo, Sicily to “significantly open the SH09 flight envelope,” said the Wetzikonbased company, which rebranded as Kopter from Marenco Swisscopter in February 2018. It added that the design of the next aircraft, pre-series (PS4), is currently being finalised. SH09 P3 made its first flight on 22nd November last year and has since completed more than 50 hours of flight testing at the company’s facility in Mollis, Switzerland, “where it has been produced and it is currently supported.” “The aircraft climbed up to 5,000ft and reached a speed of 126kts, while performing a series of maneuvers such as turns, autorotations and short field take-off and landing profiles,” said Kopter. Michele Riccobono, chief technical officer & head of flight operations, said: “The team is very pleased with the results of this flight test phase. The aircraft behaved as expected, confirming the initial design assumptions of the SH09 concept. ‘We look forward to pursuing the flight test program in Sicily in order to complete the final optimisation of our aircraft and freeze the configuration for the baseline Type Certificate.”
PS4 Build-Up
“There is a significant amount of H125 operators within the aviation market, but simulator training is lagging, compared to the operation of twin-engine helicopters in sectors such as oil and gas, search and rescue, and helicopter emergency medical services,” said Coptersafety. “With a new H125, FFS Level D, Coptersafety can offer training scenarios and operational training for onshore singleengine helicopter operations in the same way that has already been seen in multiengine helicopter operations. Mikko Kallio, head of training and development at Coptersafety, said, “When the training is not limited to a set of emergencies, the training will be more efficient and realistic. Using flight simulators in training also reduces risks associated with high-risk training scenarios, e.g., flight training for a loss of hydraulic power.” Even though our H125 simulator will be ready for training in May, operators can book through Coptersafety’s website. www.coptersafety.com
Airborne Technologies was awarded a FRONTEX funded contract to upgrade one of the Bulgarian Border Guard’s AW109s including LINX and a FLIR Star Safire 380 HD, an ECS Line-of-Sight Downlink, and a payload-friendly carbon-fibre tactical workstation. Wolfgang Grumeth, CEO of Airborne Technologies, said, “We are proud that Airborne LINX is on the rise amongst Europe´s police forces. With the Bulgarian Border Guard, a further European authority trusts our experience and our innovative solutions. “In the meantime, aircraft – rotary and fixed wing – with our surveillance technology on board are on duty for numerous police forces all over Europe. With the AW109 ‘missionised’ with Airborne LINX, the Bulgarian Border Guard will be one of the best-equipped police forces in Europe.” www.airbornetechnologies.at

Balancing Parenthood While Fighting Forest Fires
Isabel used to work at 10 to 12 different bases in a year. Often, she was called in with short notice.
Wildfires have repeatedly been a hot topic in Europe, the United States and other parts of the world during summer.
“The frantic environment did not bother me previously at all. This was due to the fact that I enjoy the excitement and travel that the job brings,” says Isabel. Due to her passion and love for her working environment, she was willing to give the career everything she had. However, now being a young mother, things have become a bit more complicated. Being directly responsible for a newborn human being makes it a lot more difficult just to pick up your things and leave for a mission.
Summers is one of the busiest seasons for aerial firefighters. As climate experts fear wildfires will only get worse in the future, we can most likely expect a growing demand for aerial firefighters. Ensuring an uninterrupted career development of pilots during their busy parenting years is one way to make sure we have firefighters tomorrow, too.
COMBINING INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS WHILE HAVING CHILDREN AT HOME IS A TRICKY MISSION Becoming a parent always involves shifts in your lifestyle and priorities. It is difficult to convey the amount of fatiguing and challenging work helicopter pilots do – especially when being a parent of small children at the same time. Still, many pilots would not trade their job for anything. After all, it beats sitting behind a desk and comes with fantastic views, along with many other benefits. However, there are also challenges. Combining family life with a pilot occupation can be difficult due to a busy schedule filled with training and duty trips.
Most people go into parenthood with an idea about their values concerning both raising their children and developing their careers, including a notion of the role their work will play after the children are born. Yet, the reality of parenthood often causes those views and plans to evolve, and the difficulty in striking a balance between parenthood and work means many have to reorganise their lives more than planned. Balancing career and family life presents challenges for all working parents, but we recognise there are unique challenges presented for helicopter pilots once their children are born. An airline pilot’s hectic schedule begins right from the beginning of their career, usually during simulator training. Days are long, the books are thick, and the required absorption rate of the study material is fast.
MAKING TRAINING SMOOTH FOR PILOTS WITH SMALL CHILDREN
While combining a demanding vocation with parenthood is a challenge, there should be nothing preventing you from having both. For us at Coptersafety, it is essential to decrease any barriers to career-family balancing. Thus, our job as a training service provider is to make the training smooth also for pilots with small kids. It can be as little as offering a kid-friendly area or providing personalised training. This allows the parent to take time off from the training schedule for childcare.
We were glad to catch up with Isabel Orran, one of our student pilots, to hear her thoughts about incorporating work with being a parent. Isabel is a new mother who spent three weeks with her baby at our training facilities. At the time, she was faced with the dilemma of choosing between her pilot career and family. Luckily, Isabel did not have to make this painful decision when she was offered a new job. The job enabled her to work close to her home, reducing the time spent abroad. Isabel originally became a pilot due to her father’s passion for flying. Today she works as an aerial firefighter. She has been working all around Europe and South America for the last seven years. After becoming a mother, Isabel, like any parent, has experienced changes in her work and, most of all, in her priorities and values.
TRAINING WITH A BABY ATTACHED TO ONE’S HIP
While Isabel was training at Coptersafety, she was challenged in ways she had not faced before. It was her first time learning the ins and outs of the AW139 helicopter. The first time of her taking the IFR (instrument flight rules) course. Above all, it was the first time doing it all with a baby attached to her hip. “At times the information overwhelmed me, and I felt like it was too much for me to manage. At one point I was close to reaching my breaking point. But I am glad I did not quit,” Isabel reveals. “I feel lucky that so many people here have gone to great lengths to provide all the extraordinary arrangements and accommodations for my family and me during our training here. Especially having my own mother out here with me was a great help. Without her, I could not have done it. I am most thankful for all the support I have received,” she concludes.

Sevenoaks, UK-based Autonomous Flight has unveiled the development mock-up of its unique Y6S eVTOL tiltrotor, which can already turn on its fans and rotate the rotor shrouds. Fundraising of $25 million for a flying prototype is “almost finalized.” The Y6S (Y as it is Y-shaped; 6 as it has six fans, two is each shroud; and S for Sport) is designed to fly two people at 72mph and 1,500ft above the ground with a range of 80 miles (68 net of reserve power). It has tilt-props and two wings that can supports its entire 2000-pound max weight in the cruise. Company chairman and founder, Martin Warner, gave GA Buyer Europe a Y6S preview recently and said his next design was an 8-seater (plus pilot). The Y6S would
GAMA Backs eVTOL Development Noting the rapid expansion of the electric and urban mobility community, General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) president and CEO Pete Bunce said “This is as important to aviation as the dawn of the jet age.” Bunce’s comments came during Washington, DC-based GAMA’s annual State of the Industry event in February. GAMA created an Electric Propulsion and Innovation Committee (EPIC) in 2015 and this has grown from a group of 11 companies to 79 now. He noted Morgan Stanley’s study that projected a total “addressable market” of $1.5 trillion for autonomous aircraft by 2040. “The intersection of many technologies, such as ultra-efficient batteries, autonomous systems, and advanced manufacturing processes are spawning a flurry of activity in this space,” said Adam Jonas, head of Morgan Stanley's Global

remain for private users, “people like me,” said Warner, while the AS1 (Air Shuttle One) will have various applications.. The company hopes to fly a Y6S prototype by the end of 2019. The craft will have six removable racks of Lithium-ion batteries (a total of 4,500 cells, and total weight 450lbs). Warner says, “If we can produce 1,000-plus vehicles the price could be at the $40,000 level. What makes the Y6S unique is its six motors and its Y-frame, and that it is a transition aircraft. Nothing else combines all these elements.” He envisages a build number “in the low thousands.” From having 6-10 employees, he says it will grow to 30 employees with 80 percent of the recruitment for that due to be completed within six months of the second stage funding being completed – this being imminent. www.autonomousflight.com

Auto and Shared Mobility research team. Bunce said mixed use of eVTOLs and helicopters could one day be the norm. www.gama.aero and unscheduled downtime. “We greatly appreciate the confidence Bell has in the GPMS Foresight MX HUMS technology,” said GPMS founder and CEO, Dr. Eric Bechhoefer. “The partnership between Bell and GPMS reflects a deeper commitment to drive the industry into the next phase of innovation.” The Bell 407 HUMS received STC certification from the FAA in 2018. The modernised HUMS system weighs less than nine pounds including all hardware, cable, and mounting components. It is Part 135 compliant for air medical use, and offers a full scope of functionality including mechanical diagnostics and prognostics, engine performance monitoring, exceedance monitoring, flight regime recognition, automated data acquisition, and automated, optimised solutions for rotor, track and balance. The 407 HUMS provides automatic alerting through email and SMS and an intuitive, simple user interface accessible through a standard web browser on a laptop, desktop, tablet or cell phone. www.gpms-vt.com

Part 2
Pilot Error: Getting to Know the ‘Dirty Dozen’ Gordon Dupont established his ‘Dirty Dozen’ list to increase awareness of how human factors can contribute towards accidents and incidents. Simon Newbold continues his series with a commentary of the first six issues as they might apply to pilots… 1) Lack of communication
The lack of clear direct statements and good, active listening skills. Poor communication often appears at the top of contributing and causal factors in accident reports, and is therefore one of the most critical human factor elements. Communication refers to the transmitter and the receiver, as well as the method of transmission. Transmitted instructions may be unclear or inaccessible. The receiver may make assumptions about the meaning of these instructions, and the transmitter may assume that the message has been received and understood. With verbal communication it is common that only 30% of a message is received and understood. Detailed information must be passed before, during and after any task, and especially across the handover of shifts. Therefore, when messages are complex, they should be written down, and organisations should encourage full use of logbooks, worksheets, and checklists etc. Verbal messages can be kept short, with the most critical elements emphasised at the beginning and repeated at the end. Assumptions should be avoided and opportunities for asking questions both given and taken. It is important to remember that communication is carried out through words, by using a tone and is often transmitted with body language. The choice and use of words should take into consideration that the text may be spoken, written and read too. Next is how we say those words, how loud or clear is the voice, what variety is there in the content, how are intonation, expression, phrasing and pauses used to make the message clearer? Finally, body language is important as what is being said is sometimes being observed.
2) Complacency.
Complacency can occur for several reasons, including over-confidence, lack of understanding, lack of training, lack of experience and many others. Training or learning should always be practiced like it's the real thing. We must never stop training and we must never stop learning. Everyone can still learn something, especially with changing technology, changing structural features, and lack of putting into practice what we have been taught. Complacency can be described as a feeling of self-satisfaction accompanied by a loss of awareness of potential dangers. Such a feeling often arises when conducting routine activities that have become habitual and which may be “considered”, by an individual or indeed by an organisation, as easy and safe. A general relaxation of 62 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE APRIL 2019
vigilance results, and important signals are missed, with the individual only seeing what he, or she, expects to see. Complacency can also occur following a highly intense activity such as recovering from a possible disaster; the relief felt at the time can result in physical relaxation and reduced mental vigilance and awareness. This psychological experience is referred to as a lacuna. Whilst too much pressure and demand cause over-stress and reduced human performance, too little results in under-stress, boredom, complacency and reduced human performance. It is therefore important, when conducting simple, routine and habitual tasks, and when fatigued, to maintain an adequate, or optimum, level of stress through different stimulation. Always expect to find a fault, always look for something that may have been missed. Following written instructions, and adhering to procedures that increase vigilance, such as inspection routines, can provide suitable stimulus. It is important to avoid: • Working from memory; • Assuming that something is ok when you haven’t checked it; • Signing off work that you are unsure has been completed. Teamwork and mutual cross-checking will provide adequate stimulus when fatigued.
3) Lack of knowledge.
From the experienced, to the new recruit, knowledge is everything. For that new starter, absorb it, act like a sponge and soak it up. For the one that has been there and done it, share it and never assume you know everything - it's impossible! The regulatory requirements for training and qualification can be comprehensive, and organisations are forced to strictly enforce these requirements. However, lack of on-the-job experience and specific knowledge can lead workers into misjudging situations and making unsafe decisions. Aircraft systems are so complex and integrated that it is nearly impossible to perform many tasks without substantial technical training, current relevant experience and adequate reference documents. Furthermore, systems and procedures can change substantially, and employees’ knowledge can quickly become out-of-date. It is important for all employed in the industry to undertake continuing professional development and for the most experienced workers to share their knowledge with colleagues. Part of this learning process should include the latest knowledge on human error and performance. It should not be taken as a sign of weakness to ask someone for help or for information; in fact, this should be encouraged. Checklists and publications should always be referred to and followed, and never make assumptions or work from memory. Across the world there are numerous case studies or examples of incidents or accidents that we all can learn from.

4) Distraction.
If it takes your mind off the job, then it's a dangerous distraction. It is also fatal to become so tunnel-visioned that you could lose sight of something. Distraction could be anything that draws a person’s attention away from the task on which they are employed. Some distractions in the workplace are unavoidable, such as loud noises, requests for assistance or advice, and day-to-day safety problems that require immediate solving. Other distractions can be avoided, or delayed until more appropriate times, such as messages from home, or administration tasks. Psychologists say that distraction is the number one cause of forgetting things, hence the need to avoid becoming distracted and to avoid distracting others. Humans tend to think ahead. Thus, when returning to a task, following a distraction, we tend to think we are further ahead than we actually are. To reduce errors from distraction it is best to complete a task before responding. If the task cannot be completed without hurrying, then we can prominently mark (or “lock off”) the incomplete work as a reminder to ourselves and anyone else who may complete the work. When returning to work, after being distracted, it is a good idea to commence at least three steps back, so that we re-trace some steps before picking up the task again. If necessary, having someone else double-check our work using a checklist may be appropriate and useful. Another opportunity is to consider good workspace design, management of the environment, and procedures that create “safety zones”, “circles of safety” or “do not disturb areas” around workers engaged in critical tasks.
5) Lack of Teamwork.
In aviation many tasks and operations are team affairs; no single person or organisation can be responsible for the safe outcomes of all tasks. However, if someone is not contributing to the team effort, this can lead to unsafe outcomes. This means that workers must rely on colleagues and other outside agencies, as well as giving others their support. Teamwork consists of many skills that each team member will need to prove their competence. Some of the key teamwork skills include: leadership, followership, effective communication, trust-building, motivation of self and others, and praise giving. To create an effective team, it is necessary that the following issues, as appropriate, are discussed, clarified, agreed, and understood by all team members: • A clearly defined and maintained aim, or goal(s) • Each team member’s roles and responsibilities • Communication messages and methods • Limitations and boundaries • Emergency procedures • Individual expectations and concerns • What defines a successful outcome? • Debriefing arrangements • Opportunities for questions and clarification A team’s effectiveness can also be improved through the selection of team members to reflect a broad range of experience and skill sets. All of this is then further enhanced through practice and rehearsal.
6) Fatigue.
Fatigue is weariness from labour or exertion, nervous exhaustion or the temporary loss of power to respond. It is a natural physiological reaction to prolonged physical and/or mental stress. We can become fatigued following long periods of work and also following periods of hard work. When fatigue becomes a chronic condition, it may require medical attention. As we become more fatigued our ability to concentrate, remember and make decisions reduces. Therefore, we are more easily distracted and we lose situational awareness. Fatigue will also affect a person’s mood, often making them more withdrawn, but sometimes more irrational and angry. It is a human problem that we tend to underestimate our level of fatigue and overestimate our ability to cope with it. Therefore, it is important that when we are doing something, we are aware of the signs and symptoms in ourselves and others. Fatigue self-management involves a three-sided programme of regular sleep, a healthy diet, and exercise. Work of a critical and complex nature should not be programmed during the low point on the body’s circadian rhythm, usually 03:00 – 05:00am; and, when fatigued, always get someone else to check your work. Fatigue or tiredness is a big factor in human factors that has or has nearly caused many an incident. How many times have you driven when tired? How many times have you lost concentration and then used the excuse that you are tired?

Simon Newbold, an airfield operations consultant, began his career at then BAA
. Heathrow in September 1990. During his time spent there, he worked in a variety
of front line operational and managerial roles before spending four years as an Airfield Planning Manager, before returning to the front-line operation as a supervisor. Dedication to the role and his knowledge meant that he was in demand to lead on training for all new starter and existing staff. His work soon expanded to a wider audience, and even saw him co-chair a special interest group feeding into the Aviation Industry Skills Board. Simon’s passion and knowledge for all things in the operation and the airport’s history has seen him train over 100 staff. After 27 and a half years Simon left Heathrow in February 2018 to take on a new challenge working for the high-profile Airport Management Consultancy firm APMC.
