It is an intensive five-day hands-on course. As these engines are entirely controlled by dual redundant FADEC systems, the course is focused on teaching mechanics the benefits of a computer connection and the associated maintenance software. The FADEC systems record every relevant engine parameter multiple time per second. FADEC recordings are shared with Continental Technical Support Team that stores them. This allows a close working relationship between the field mechanic and Continental’s Technical Support Team. Deep analysis of these recordings facilitates maintenance operations as they identify clearly which subsystem needs attention. Furthermore, the FADEC reading allows for predictive maintenance. It is able to identify parts of the engine that, even if they are fully functional and safe at this point in time, will need replacement in the future. This feature is a game changer for mechanics, allowing them to turn unscheduled maintenance events into planned events.

It will cover any new important Service Bulletin, supersedure of important parts or subsystems, new procedures or use of new tools, and many other subjects. Course material is constantly updated, so each and every mechanic will benefit from them whether they took the c lass a few years before or not. For maintenance personnel that takes the class for the first time, they will learn all the basic facts, do’s and don’ts, tricks of the trade, and proper maintenance procedures. VerdeGo Aero Leads Electric Flight Revolution with IDEP Hybrid-Electric Powertrain Systems Revolutions in aircraft design are driven by innovations in propulsion. When new powerplants are invented, they are always first applied to conventional aircraft designs. However, performance advantages usually don’t appear until new aircraft concepts are optimised around the new powerplant. For example, in the early jet era aircraft like the P-59 Airacomet had minimal performance advantages over pistons, but just 12 years later the F-104 Starfighter was tailored to jet propulsion with revolutionary results. Electrification of aviation is now at the stage where the jet age was in the late 1940s and early 1950s. New aircraft configurations that weren’t previously feasible are being tailored to the unique benefits of electric propulsion. VerdeGo™ Aero is focused on providing electric powertrain systems that make electrification of flight practical. Founded in 2017, VerdeGo is developing both hybrid-electric and batteryelectric powertrains that enable its customers to develop a diverse array of VTOL and fixed-wing aircraft. VerdeGo has termed these powertrains IDEP standing for Integrated Distributed Electric Propulsion. While battery-electric aviation has an exciting long-term future, there are significant challenges with batteries for aircraft designed for long range, faster cruise speeds, VTOL missions, and heavy payloads. As pioneers in electric flight, VerdeGo’s founders are acutely aware of the long-term potential and the near-term challenges for battery powered aircraft, and this has shaped VerdeGo's strategy to develop both hybrid and battery systems depending on the performance requirements of the aircraft. In mid-2019, VerdeGo Aero and Continental Aerospace Technologies announced a strategic partnership involving both financial investment in VerdeGo, and the application of Continental’s market-leading Jet-A piston engines to drive the generators inside hybrid IDEP systems. Continental joins Seyer Industries as aerospace industry strategic partners collaborating with VerdeGo on electric propulsion. “For more than ten years I have been pushing to accelerate the electric flight revolution. We are now at a point where amazing new aircraft designs are possible, and while batteries can support some market niches, if we want faster progress and certified commercial flight, hybrids are the path forward” said Erik Lindbergh, Executive Chairman and co-founder of VerdeGo Aero. “Battery technology has made significant advances, but improvements in specific energy have trended at around 5% per year for decades. At this pace it will take many years to advance from 200Wh/kg pack-level energy density, up to 800+ Wh/kg which is where some really exciting battery-electric aircraft designs are possible. Fortunately, we don’t have to wait because we can design hybrid systems now that behave like a battery from 20 years in the future” said Dr. Pat Anderson, CTO and co-founder of VerdeGo Aero.
One of the unexpected results of VerdeGo’s extensive hybrid-electric research has been the realisation that piston hybrids have advantages over turbine hybrids in applications where turbines initially were assumed to be superior. Many electric aircraft have both a peak power requirement for short durations and a constant cruise power requirement that is significantly lower than the peak. In this situation, a battery pack can augment the engine/generator system when peak power is required, and the engine/generator powers the aircraft during steady-state cruising flight such that the engine does not have to be sized for the peak power requirements. Also, while the power density (hp/lb or KW/kg) of a small turbine engine is higher than for a piston engine, the engine is only one element of a hybrid electric system that also includes the generator, battery, power distribution, motors, and fuel. The weight of a total hybrid system designed around a piston engine is not significantly greater than that of a turbine hybrid, especially when the weight of the fuel is factored into the comparison. When small turbines are compared to Jet-A piston engines, the fuel burn of the piston engine can be 50% lower. This results in a significant reduction of both carbon emissions and direct operating cost. Additionally, piston engines are quieter than small turbines, and they are significantly cheaper to purchase and maintain. Using a Jet-A piston engine provides access to the same global fuel source as turbines but with significant improvements in operating cost. VerdeGo’s modular IDEP systems can be configured for a wide array of applications. For example, standard IDEP™ components can be configured to support peak power levels of more than 1,000hp and continuous power of more than 350hp for VTOL applications using a twin-engine/generator system. These same components can also be configured for a fixed-wing hybrid system with 700hp for takeoff and 500hp for cruise. With the redundancy of twin engine/generator systems and an onboard battery pack, the twin-engine IDEP powertrain architecture has the potential to exceed the reliability of single-turbine systems while being more fuel efficient, quieter, and lower cost than turbine hybrids. “VerdeGo sees a significant market for hybrid IDEP™ powertrains to enable new aviation markets for electric flight, decades before battery-electric options are viable. The operating economics of our Jet-A piston hybrid IDEP systems are also significantly better than turbine alternatives. Additionally, the high-performance battery technologies inside our hybrids can be used to support some early market niches where battery-electric powertrains already make sense,” said Eric Bartsch, CEO and co-founder of VerdeGo Aero. VerdeGo’s hybrid and battery IDEP systems are moving into the prototyping phase of their development programs with “iron bird” full-scale test systems planned to be operational in the 2nd quarter of 2020.

The strength of your Owner Trustee registration with the FAA rests upon the trust documents that create the legal relationship. Thus, the Owner Trustee and the Beneficiary must both agree to be bound by, and to comply at all times with, the documents that make up the Trust Agreement. Antares E2 Prepares For Takeoff
German company Lange Research Aircraft GmbH (LRA) has been developing an electrically driven airplane that is perfectly equipped for a variety of manned or unmanned surveillance and observation flights. The Antares E2 is characterised by its climate-friendly and carbon-neutral powertrain, its unusually high endurance of 40 flight hours, its high payload of approximately 200kg, and a multiple redundancy of all important systems, making the airplane “a lot safer than its competitors,” said LRA. An additional “unique” feature of the Antares E2, says LRA, is its high reliability, which – combined with the fact that the Antares E2’s standard fit includes optical, thermosensitive and hyperspectral image-giving sensors — “makes it ideal for maritime applications.” As part of the Antares E2 project, LRA is developing an electrically propelled aircraft that can be used for a variety of observation, detection or surveillance tasks, both manned and unmanned. The majority of the international observation and surveillance missions have so far been flown by conventionally powered aircraft. With the Antares E2, the implementation of such missions is significantly more economical than previously possible due to significantly lower fuel consumption and lower setup costs, claims LRA. “This new economic efficiency paves the way for the implementation of new missions, which could not be flown for cost reasons, and also opens the market for other customer segments.” Energy is supplied to the Antares E2 based on fuel cells with an integrated methanol reformer. “This system of fuel cell and reformer is superior to all conventional systems in terms of total system weight and long-term energy draw, since much more energy can be extracted from reformer fuel than [can be achieved with] internal combustion engines. For supply at load peaks, e.g. at take-off and in climb, the aircraft is additionally equipped with a lithium-ion battery. The battery consists of approximately 24 modules, each with three individual cells, which are housed in the lobes of the inner wings. Each cell is redundantly monitored for voltage and temperature. In addition, the modules have battery heaters to keep the batteries in the optimum temperature range.

Diamond introduces DA62 MPP Survey Concept and a new Surveillance Configuration Diamond Aircraft has introduced a new variant of its DA62 Special Mission Aircraft for the survey market. The Austrian manufacturer aims to achieve certification (as a Major Change STC) by the middle of 2020 with key features being single seats and a survey hatch.

As part of it, our Gyro Stabilization Mount GSM 4000 fits perfectly into the overall system. The versatility of the stabilisation unit makes it a perfect add-on product for a large range of state-of-the-art sensors like cameras, LiDARs, and other surveying equipment.”
The standard available seat bench of the DA62 will be replaced by two individual DA62 pilot seats “to significantly increase the comfort and generate more room for the operator.” The seats will be repositioned backwards by 70 mm, there will be a console in the middle and operators can benefit from adjustable backrests. In addition, to create a cleaner, more aerodynamic aircraft shape, Diamond has been working to integrate the survey cameras and stabilisation mounts in the cabin by replacing the right-hand operator seat. Easy access to the large luggage compartment allows for easy installation of additional mission equipment such as data storage units, FMS and other units. The company says it will take around six months to complete Phase One and an additional eight months to have Phase Two completed, the final stage of development. Essentially, Diamond has transferred the DA42 MPP GeoSTAR design concept to the DA62 MPP Survey configuration in cooperation with its partners, Vexcel Imaging and RIEGL Laser Measurement Systems. The Survey configuration will incorporate a Vexcel UltraCAM Eagle (Phase One) or Osprey (Phase Two) including Ultranav; a SOMAG GSM4000 stabilisation mount installation in the cabin; in combination with a RIEGL VQ780 II airborne scanner in the nose. With this, the company said, “Diamond will have a strong and modern European state-of-the-art survey configuration. The extraordinary low noise signature of the aircraft, supported by the on-top exhaust systems, in combination with the low fuel burn, fits perfectly with the idea to operate silently and environmentally friendly.” Markus Fischer, director special mission aircraft at Diamond, said: “This newly launched programme is definitely one of the biggest product enhancements within the past few years within the special mission aircraft segment.” He added that feedback had been “incredibly positive” at the Intergeo show in Berlin, where the concept was launched in October. “It seems to be that the survey industry is looking for the next generation aircraft, able to operate on low cost and to a high environmental standard,” said Fischer. “The easy operation and low noise capabilities will allow an increase in operational capabilities at night or over the weekend.”

uAvionix Acquires AeroVonics uAvionix Corporation has acquired AeroVonics LLC, an award-winning startup avionics company based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. AeroVonics LLC was formed in 2018 by Jeff Bethel, co-founder of Aspen Avionics, and launched at EAA Oshkosh 2018, where it won the Innovation Showcase award with both the AV-20 and AV-30 product concepts. uAvionix Corporation will incorporate AeroVonics’ AV-20S Multi-Function Display (MFD) and AV-30 Primary Flight Display (PFD) products into its product line. The acquisition marks uAvionix’s first foray into advanced digital cockpit displays for the General Aviation (GA) market. The AV-20S series MFD is approved under the FAA’s Non-Required Safety Enhancing Equipment (NORSEE) process and can be installed as a Minor Alteration in most GA aircraft. The AV-20S provides multiple functions such as a Standby Attitude Indicator, derived Angle of Attack, Clocks and Timers, Outside Air Temperature, Density Altitude and a G Meter, all with a 30minute internal battery backup. The AV-20S fits into a standard two-inch round instrument hole and requires minimal installation time. The AV-30 series PFD is currently available for experimental aircraft and is on track to receive Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval for certified aircraft. The AV-30 includes a highly customisable user interface with displays of Primary Attitude, Slip and Direction of Flight. Pilots can also select from a wide variety of supplemental flight parameters (similar to those of the AV-20S) and customise up to three user pages, selecting from various colour schemes and font sets. Autopilot integration will begin in 2020, after the initial STC approval. The AV-30 also fits into a standard three-inch round instrument hole and preserves the circular display format associated with the legacy instrument panel. “I just can’t tell you how ecstatic we are to bring the expertly executed AeroVonics technology into this new era of uAvionix,”

Revolutionises GA With “Autoland” Garmin has developed an emergency system which can automatically land
an aircraft when the pilot is unable to, and which can be activated by
passengers if the pilot is incapacitated. Automatic landings were pioneered more than 50 years ago for early airliners and are used regularly to guide passenger jets on to runways, but the new Garmin Autoland system can take control and land the aircraft when commanded to do so. It will find the optimal airport and runway, taking into account factors such as weather, terrain, obstacles and aircraft performance statistics. The system, says Garmin, will “bring peace of mind” to those travelling in smaller aircraft. It will be available “soon” on select general aviation aircraft with the Garmin G3000 integrated flight deck, said the company. “Today, aviation is forever changed as we introduce one of the industry’s most significant innovations – the first Autoland system for general aviation aircraft,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin president and CEO. “The unveiling of Autoland demonstrates Garmin’s deep commitment to develop advanced technologies that enhance aviation safety and save lives.” In the event of an emergency, the pilot or passengers on board the aircraft can activate Autoland to land the aircraft using a dedicated button. The system can also activate automatically “if the system determines it’s necessary,” says Garmin. Once activated, the system calculates a flight plan to the most suitable airport, initiates an approach to the runway and automatically lands the aircraft – without pilot or passenger intervention. Phil Straub, Garmin executive vice president and managing director of aviation, said, “The vision and development of the world’s first Autoland system for general aviation was a natural progression for Garmin as we looked at our aircraft systems and existing autonomous technologies and recognised it is our responsibility to use these building blocks to deliver a technology that will change lives and revolutionise air travel.” Following Autoland activation, the system takes into account various data and criteria relevant to the flight, taking into account factors such as weather, fuel on board, runway surface and length, terrain, obstacles and more in selecting the most suitable airport and runway. The availability of a GPS approach with lateral and vertical guidance to the runway is also required when the system is considering various airports and runways. The system automatically communicates with air traffic control (ATC), advising controllers and pilots operating near the aircraft of its location and its intentions.
Throughout an Autoland activation, the system provides simple visual and verbal communications in plain language so passengers in the aircraft know what to expect. The flight displays show the aircraft’s location on a map alongside information such as the destination airport, estimated time of arrival, distance to the destination airport and fuel remaining. Airspeed, altitude and aircraft heading are also labelled in an easyto-understand format. Passengers also have the option to communicate with ATC by following instructions on the display using the touchscreen interface on the flight deck, said Garmin. “The Garmin Autothrottle system is used to automatically manage aircraft speed, engine performance and engine power so the aircraft can climb, descend or maintain altitude as needed during an Autoland activation,” the company added. “On approach to land, the system initiates a controlled descent to the airport. If the aircraft needs additional time to descend or slow down during the approach, the Autoland system initiates a standard holding procedure and extends the landing gear and flaps. “On the runway, automatic braking is applied while tracking the runway centreline to bring the aircraft to a full stop. Engine shutdown is also automated so occupants can safely exit the aircraft.” At any time, a pilot can deactivate Autoland with a single press of the “AP” autopilot key on the autopilot controller or the autopilot disconnect button on the controls. The flight display shows a message that confirms Autoland has been deactivated and in the event of an accidental deactivation, the system shows passengers how to reactivate Autoland if needed. Garmin Autonomí, a family of automated flight technologies, encompasses Autoland, Emergency Descent Mode (EDM) and Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP). The company says Autoland will “soon be available as part of the G3000 integrated flight deck on the Cirrus Vision Jet and the Piper M600,” pending FAA certification. Piper Aircraft has elected to make Garmin Autoland (branded as ‘Halo’) standard on its newly-announced M600 SLS single-engine turboprop. Piper president and CEO, Simon Caldecott, said “The team at Piper Aircraft is proud that they will be first to market with Garmin Autoland, which will ultimately help pave the way for others. “The HALO System greatly enhances situational awareness and operational safety through the use of advanced technology and is one the most significant advancements in General Aviation history.” Certification of the M600 SLS is imminent, according to Piper. Base price is $2.994m. Performance of the M600SLS includes max cruise speed of 274ktas, maximum range 1,658nm and a service ceiling of 30,000ft. In its application on the Cirrus SF30 Vision Jet, the company will offer Autoland as standard and will brand it as “Safe Return.” Garmin says the project began in 2011 with Garmin engineers testing algorithms that could make automatic landings possible, leading in 2014 to a first auto-landing, in a Columbia 400 piston single. In testing the company has already run more than 800 auto-landings in various airplanes, including around 200 in the M600, which first successfully completed an autoland on 10th September 2018. Autoland, which Garmin stresses is strictly for “emergencies only,” also gives other aircraft manufacturers an alternative to parachute-type rescue systems for situations where the pilot is incapacitated where the aircraft is still operating normally. It also has the advantage that medical assistance would be more readily available at an airport rather than a random location that results from a parachute deployment.

Daher’s latest member in its family of TBM very fast turboprop aircraft, the TBM 940 had (as of late October) logged 35 orders since its official launch in March, “with more than 20 of these autothrottle-equipped airplanes already delivered,” the company reported. At an NBAA Convention briefing, Daher confirmed this the aircraft’s type certification by the FAA, EASA, as well as the civil aviation authorities of Brazil, Canada and Japan. “The enthusiastic market response for the TBM 940 is definitely encouraging, as this aircraft reflects our vision of evolving the TBM by providing the ultimate flying experience for owners and operators,” said Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president of Daher’s Airplane Business Unit. “This is the latest step in our efforts to offer an aircraft family that combines performance and safety through continuous improvement across the TBM product line.” Featuring an increased level of automation that reduces the pilot’s workload and optimises performance and safety, the TBM 940 incorporates an automated throttle and an automated icing detection system – both of which are installed for the first time on a standard production turboprop aircraft weighing less than 12,500 lbs. (5.7 metric tons), claims Daher. “Their integration in the aircraft further builds on Daher’s TBM e-copilot strategy of introducing functionality for improved operational safety on the TBM product line.” Some of the TBM 940’s enhancements, such as cabin upgrades for style, ergonomics and comfort, have also been applied to Daher’s entry-level TBM 910, along with the automated icing detection system. Both aircraft also benefit from the latest Garmin cockpit features: Surface Watch, which gives pilots better situational awareness in the airport environment; BARO VNAV, allowing approaches with vertical guidance when the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is not available; and visual approach assistance in the execution of visual approaches at uncontrolled airports with vertical guidance.

Daher also announced in October that it had completed the acquisition of Quest Aircraft Company, meaning the Tarbes, France-based manufacturer has “established a complete scope of U.S. industrial activities.” Adding Sandpoint, Idaho-based Quest means Daher can now “deploy [our] full range of activities in North America: aircraft manufacturing; the production of systems and equipment; along with the supply of logistics and services. This brings the company’s successful business model – which covers both industry and services – to one of the world’s largest aerospace markets.” “Our acquisition of the Quest Aircraft Company is perfectly aligned with Daher’s strategy to intensify its business footprint in America,” said Daher CEO Didier Kayat. “In addition to adding the Kodiak to our aircraft portfolio, we have now gained a major competitive advantage for all of Daher’s aerospace business lines in North America.” By expanding its product line to include both the Kodiak and TBM, Daher becomes the seventh-ranked general aviation airplane manufacturer worldwide and strengthens its position as a leader of high-end single-engine turboprop aircraft. The TBM is the world’s fastest single-engine turboprop-powered airplane, with more than 950 delivered to owners and operators around the globe. “Building on the experience gathered from the worldwide PC-12 fleet of over 1,700 aircraft with more than seven million flight hours, plus Pilatus industry-leading support, the new PC-12 NGX brings the latest technology to the turboprop market,” it said. Digital Engine Control At the heart of the new PC-12 NGX is the PT6E-67XP turboprop engine provided by Pratt & Whitney Canada. “Single-engine turboprop operation demands a proven power plant: the improved engine features an Electronic Propeller and Engine Control System including Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) – a worldwide first in this market segment,” said Pilatus. “In addition, the new propeller low-speed mode results in a significant reduction in cabin noise for greater passenger comfort.” The new turboprop engine enables the PC12 NGX to achieve a maximum cruise speed of 290 knots (537 kph). It also sees new features such as a Prist-free fuel operation (Prist is a fuel system icing inhibitor). “Smart” Cockpit The PC-12 NGX has a range of new features for the pilot including Honeywell’s Advanced Cockpit Environment (ACE), drawing on the Pilatus PC-24 to provide a more advanced avionics environment. Pilatus has also “combined the power of a cursor control device with the versatility of a smart touch-screen controller” in what it terms “a truly professional flight deck.” The digital autothrottle (i.e. automatic thrust adjustment) reduces pilot workload for greater safety and “ensures automatic power optimisation in every phase of flight.” New Cabin, Larger Windows The cabin windows have been enlarged by ten percent to enhance the PC-12 NGX’s
passenger experience and deliver more natural light. The rectangular shape of the new windows, also adapted from the PC-24, and dark windshield surround trim create a distinctive ramp presence for the PC-12 NGX. The completely redesigned cabin comes in six different BMW Designworks interiors. The “specially developed, extremely light” passenger seats offer optimum ergonomics with full-recline capability if required. The seats are arranged to provide maximum freedom of movement with more headroom thanks to the redesigned headliner, while the air-conditioning system delivers “better and quieter air distribution.” Reduced Operating Costs With the new PC-12 NGX, scheduled maintenance intervals have been extended to 600 flight hours, providing significant cost savings, according to Pilatus. The time-between-overhaul (TBO) period has been increased from 4,000 to 5,000 hours, reducing the cost of operating the PC-12 NGX “even further.” Speaking at the presentation in Las Vegas, Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, said: “We are excited to reveal the new PC-12 NGX today. To maintain the PC-12’s leadership in the general aviation marketplace, we continuously seek innovative solutions which benefit the safety, comfort and productivity of our customers. “The PC-12 NGX is a showcase for the advanced technology collaboration between Pilatus, Pratt & Whitney Canada, and Honeywell. Together, we took the best, and made it even better. “What’s more, our customers do not have to wait years into the future to enjoy these benefits, the PC-12 NGX is here today.” Base price of the PC-12 NGX in 2020 is 4,390,000 US dollars, with typically equipped executive-configured aircraft priced at 5,369,000 US dollars. What is Turboprop Engine Maintenance?
What should you know about business turboprop engine maintenance? How do turboprops work, how often is maintenance required for these types of engines, and what does it cost? Chris Kjelgaard explains… Why do turboprop engines need maintenance?
While internal combustion engines in cars and gas turbine engines (such as turboprops) in Business Aviation are very different, they all need to be maintained carefully, and for the same reasons. Just as overhauling your car engine in accordance with its recommended service schedule helps ensure your vehicle has a long lifespan, operating reliably and economically, so maintaining your business aircraft’s turboprop engines in accordance with their recommended maintenance schedule helps ensure the aircraft offers optimal performance and stays reliable and durable for long periods between inspections and shop visits. By following a turboprop engine’s recommended maintenance schedule closely, you can prevent unexpected, costly repairs and unnecessary part replacements.
How do turboprop engines work?
While turbofan (jet), turboprop and turboshaft (helicopter) engines are all gas turbine engines, turboprops and turboshafts operate differently from jet engines. All three types induct and compress air, then mix it with vaporized fuel and combust the mixture to generate hot exhaust gas which drives turbine stages. However, while in the case of turbofan engines much of the exhaust gas directly produces thrust, this is not the case in turboprops. Instead, the gas turns turbine stages which drive a very fast rotating spool. The spool is linked by means of a large planetary reduction gearbox to a drive shaft which rotates at a much-reduced rate. In a turboprop engine that drive shaft turns a large propeller, which pushes and accelerates large amounts of air behind the aircraft, creating an equalopposite reaction which moves the aircraft forward at high speed. The turbine-driven spool which goes into the center of the reduction gearbox rotates at about 17,000 rotations per 40 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE DECEMBER 2019
minute (rpm), but the propeller drive shaft driven by the reduction gears in the gearbox turns at peak rotation rates of 1,700-2,100 rpm.
H-Series engines don’t require mid-term HSIs and, because they have no fuel nozzles, don’t require recurrent fuel-nozzle inspections or cleaning.
Turboprops are used to power many aircraft types because they offer better propulsive efficiency and better fuel efficiency than jet engines (turbofans).
Honeywell: Basic TBOs for the various Honeywell TPE331 models range from 5,000hrs to 5,400hrs, but the former TBO schedule requires only one mid-time inspection – a hot section inspection at 2,500hrs. The latter requires an HSI at 1,800hrs and both an HSI and gearbox inspection at 3,600hrs.
There is a performance trade-off, however: turboprops don’t usually fly as fast, as high, or as far as jets. But Business Aviation turboprop engines are also much cheaper to buy than business jet engines, because they’re smaller, less powerful, simpler, and have fewer complex parts. While many families of turbofan engines exist to power business jets, the Business Aviation turboprop market essentially consists of just four major families:
Pratt & Whitney Canada: TBO intervals for different models in Pratt & Whitney Canada’s PT6A family range from 2,000hrs in the PT6A-38 (a much lower TBO than for any other PT6A model) to 6,000hrs in the PTA-65B, -65R and 67R (which is the highest-power model in the PT6A family).

Most PT6A models have TBOs ranging from 3,000hrs to 4,000hrs and corresponding mid-time HSIs with intervals of half as many hours. The three 6,000hr-TBO models all require HSIs at 2,000hrs, however.

The PT6A—which has dozens of family members, ranging in maximum power output from 500shp to 1,700shp— dominates the Business Aviation sector, and represents the longest-produced and highest-selling aviation gas turbine engine series in history.
When is turboprop engine maintenance needed?
Typically, time between overhauls (TBOs) for turboprop engines are slightly less than those for jet engines – particularly the more modern types. Between overhauls, turboprop engines typically undergo hot-section inspections (HSIs) at a pre-determined number of hours or flight cycles. GE Aviation: The basic TBO for all H-Series engines – both new and in-service – has been extended from 3,600hrs to 4,000hrs. Meanwhile, H-Series life limited parts (LLP) replacement times are being extended to two or more TBO intervals and up to 14,500 take-offs.
What does turboprop maintenance cost?
Due to the architecture of turboprop engines, replacement of life-limited parts (LLPs)—also called low-cycle fatigue parts—often costs much less than in turbofan engines, contributing to turboprop engines offering lower ownership costs than turbofans. Nevertheless, costs for overhauling turboprop engines within Business Aviation typically fall in the $100k-$300k range per engine. To help manage the costs of turboprop maintenance, each engine manufacturer (and independent maintenance-plan provider Jet Support Services, Inc.) offer a variety of trademarked maintenance plans under which operators pay a fixed amount for each flight hour per engine. While the prices of such plans can exceed $100 per flight hour, the individual costs of the different services they

These power-by-the-hour plans cover the costs of all scheduled maintenance, parts, labor, engine transport, engine loans and much more besides. Where can I find turboprop engine maintenance?
Huge numbers of Business Aviation turboprop engines are in service worldwide, and the fact they come from just four engine families means the four OEMs have all developed strong, sizable global networks of designated or licensed maintenance providers. The concentration of turboprop engines for Business Aviation into just four families also means many facilities offer maintenance for each family, and some larger facilities service all four. Taking Pratt & Whitney Canada as an example, the company’s global service network has grown to include more than 40 owned or designated engine and auxiliary power unit facilities worldwide. For the PT6A, several of those entities supply on-wing line maintenance and mobile repair services, while larger facilities serve as designated overhaul facilities. As for business jet engines, maintenance-industry insiders counsel against turboprop operators immediately accepting any low-ball bid they’re quoted for engine overhauls. Such bids may exclude more services than they include, and the final invoiced total may come as a nasty surprise. Whenever possible, would-be engine-maintenance buyers should ask any maintenance facility they’re considering about the levels of expertise the shop’s employees possess as well as the maintenance shop’s employee-retention rate. High-quality, reputable shops will welcome and respond promptly to such inquiries. Additionally, before contracting any maintenance shop, buyers should make sure the company is able to communicate clearly and fairly with its customers, so that unpleasant surprises can be avoided.

In May this year, U.S. turboprop aircraft modifications specialist Blackhawk Aerospace celebrated its 20th year in business with an overall “rebrand and facility expansion” at the company’s Waco, Texas headquarters. Since reaching that milestone, the company has celebrated several other wins in 2019 including certifying the world’s fastest King Air and signing another ten-year agreement with Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC). Blackhawk’s efforts in its 20th year have “set the stage for major growth” in the company’s future, it says. It purchased an adjacent 10,000 square foot hangar and offices to house its growing sales and marketing teams. The new facility doubled Blackhawk’s footprint on the Waco Regional Airport, which the company says was sorely needed to showcase aircraft that have been refurbished under the ‘Phoenix by Blackhawk’ programme, and are now available for sale. “The Phoenix programme has really taken off this year,” said Blackhawk president and CEO, Jim Allmon. “The extra hangar space was essential in supporting the rapid growth of the programme.”

One Phoenix-upgraded aircraft is Blackhawk’s King Air 300 certification test bed, FA-124. Blackhawk upgraded the aircraft with new paint, new interior, new propellers, and of course, a new XP67A Engine+ Upgrade. “FA-124 is not only the best-looking King Air 300 on the market, but it’s also the fastest King Air in the world,” said Allmon. “Our official reported cruise speed states 343 knots TAS, but that’s a conservative number. We’ve seen speeds north of 350 KTAS from the -67A engines and Hartzell propeller combination. It’s truly incredible.” Speaking at NBAA-BACE in Las Vegas in October, Allmon explained that the company does not alter the type certificate of the original aircraft. Rather, it achieves the greater performance through the capability of the new engines to retain power at higher altitudes, through being derated at sea level, something that can be achieved through an STC. Since obtaining the XP67A STC for the King Air 300 in July, Blackhawk has secured five
orders from King Air 300 operators. The upgrade removes the standard 1,050 shaft horsepower (SHP) PT6A-60A engines and Hartzell 4-blade metal propellers and replaces them with factory-new 1200 SHP PT6A-67A engines and Hartzell 5-blade composite propellers resulting in the best performing King Air on the planet. Another programme with major growth potential involves the King Air 300’s big brother, the King Air 350. Blackhawk has seen significant success in upgrading both civilian and special mission 350’s and plans to expand even further into the special mission arena. The company says it will release more information on its special mission projects later this year. To help support the projected growth from these new programmes as well as support Blackhawk’s legacy products, Blackhawk recently signed another 10-year agreement with Pratt & Whitney Canada for factory-new PT6A engines. This arrangement continues the successful relationship between the two partners, which has resulted in an exchange of over 1,600 engines over the past 20 years-making Blackhawk one of the largest buyers of P&WC turboprop engines in the world. “Pratt has been an invaluable partner for us from day one,” said Jim Allmon. “Not only have they produced the highest-quality engine any pilot could want, but they’ve also been a sincere pleasure to work with for the past 20 years and we look forward to continuing our strong partnership.” Blackhawk’s 20th year has been a “shining milestone” for the company, and Allmon said the future looks even brighter. “We’ve got some incredibly exciting projects in the works, which we’re eager to announce when the time is right,” he said. “Blackhawk’s future is full of opportunity and we look forward to continuing to provide performance enhancements to our many customers for years to come.”
