Aero-Sense looks to the past, present and future of aviation needs According to the old proverb, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” While nobody actually plans to fail, some things are easily overlooked or forgotten. Luckily, most pilots are sensible and are aware that winter is approaching. When Autumn draws to an end, they act accordingly. In doing so, they check their stocks of de-icing fluids and anti-icing additives and make some quick calculations on how much product they will need to get through the upcoming season of icy flying. And that’s where Aero-Sense comes in… On behalf of pilots, Aero-Sense needs to be one step ahead and starts planning months in advance. Long before any mention of the first frost features on the morning news, Aero-Sense increases its production, stockpiling for the busy season ahead. Barrel after barrel of TKS de-icing fluid is produced, and countless pallets of anti-icing additive are stacked in the warehouse. Granular runway de-icer is distributed into 20kg bags and piled onto pallets. Meanwhile, a couple of intermediate bulk containers of Type I de-icing fluid fill the remaining space within the de-icing section of our warehouse. And so, AeroSense is all set and fully ready for your winter flying orders!

Thinking through Orders
For a company to stand still is for that company to fall behind. So Aero-Sense is constantly looking for future opportunities. Having recently expanded its cleaning product range by adding aircraft insecticides, AeroSense didn’t rest on its laurels, and has been busy with the registration of its ASD aircraft insecticide. The product now holds a Swiss registration number alongside the Belgian approval already obtained.
After all, a happy customer is a returning customer, right?
In the meantime, our ASD product formulation, based on 1R-trans phenothrin, is now the subject of a product application (for Union Authorization) under European Biocidal Production Regulation (EC) N° 528/2012 (Case number BC-DX037393-17). Once approved, it will be the only aircraft insecticide in the world to hold a registration for the entire European Union, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.
Yet, while preparation is key, it’s not everything. When the orders start to arrive, Aero-Sense likes to think those orders through with the customer. While the company would love for pilots to order the topquality products, of greater importance is that customers are happy with their purchase and the service they received.
Often, after a request for quote Aero-Sense customers receive not only their quote, but some additional questions or suggestions. For example, a customer asking for 600 litres of TKS in 200-litre barrels might be asked whether barrels really would be preferable to 20-litre cans that can be shipped for the same total amount on one pallet instead of two. Or, if barrels are necessary customers could be asked whether an order for 800-litres is worth considering, since an additional barrel fits on the second pallet that the customer is paying for anyway.

Univair Aircraft Corporation More Than 70 Years of Aviation Community Service

Univair has over 70 years’ experience in aviation and is part of a small group of companies with that caliber of history still running under the same family ownership. Mike Sellers, Assistant to the President, reviews how the company began, and how it comes to be where it is today… Expansion of Parts Manufacture
In 1945 J.E. “Eddie” Dyer, grandfather of Univair’s current owner and president, Jim Dyer, was released from the US Army Air Corps and moved to the Denver, Colorado area looking for a living in the airplane business rather returning home to Missouri.
New manufactured parts would be necessary to keep the fleet of post-war aircraft flying. By 1956, the Aircraft Repair and Parts Division had grown to the point that J.E. Dyer established a separate aircraft parts manufacturing and maintenance company, Universal Aircraft Industries.
Eddie teamed up with fellow veteran and wellrespected Denver area used car salesman, Don Vest, and in February 1946 Eddie and Don formed the Vest Aircraft Company. This new organization would eventually become Univair Aircraft Corp. In the early days of the company, there were two divisions of Vest Aircraft and Finance Company, the Aircraft Sales Division and the Aircraft Repair and Parts Division. The new company offered CAA and GI Bill approved flight instruction from the ground school through advanced instrument training. Don Vest managed the aircraft sa les and flight department while Eddie Dyer organized and operated a maintenance and repair facility. The Vest Aircraft Company began operation at Hayden Field in a now industrialized area of northeast Denver. Upon their arrival, the airport was renamed Vest Field, and soon after the establishment of the company, the business was successful enough that it was apparent that the business had outgrown the Ves t Field facilities. So in the early 1950s, Eddie Dyer began a search for a new location for the company. An Army Air Force field was built as an auxiliary field for Denver’s Lowry Air Force Base, but was completed late enough in the war that it was never used. Vest Aircraft Company relocated to this essentially brand-new airport, now called Sky Ranch Airport, northeast of the Denver suburb of Aurora in ear ly 1953, remaining there until 1971.
Managing the Post-War Excess
In the years right after WWII through the mid 1950s, many light airplane manufacturers expected many 6 PRODUCTS AND SERVICES BUYER EUROPE NOVEMBER 2018

returning servicemen to purchase one of the available small aircraft that were being manufactured in huge quantities. This booming post-war market never materialized, however, and the industry suffered a devastating glut of aircraft. Many of these OEMs subsequently went bankrupt and went out of business. Even some of the manufacturers that currently exist today nearly failed. In the late 1940s and early 1950s there were thousands and thousands of essentially new aircraft that had been orphaned by their recently defunct manufacturers. Eddie Dyer realized there was a great need to support the civilian aircraft industry which included many of thes e recently “orphaned” aircraft.
The new Universal Aircraft Industries Manufacturing Division purchased the manufacturing rights, tooling and remaining inventory from several bankrupted post-war aircraft manufacturers, including for the Ercoupe, Taylorcraft, Swift and Stinson 108 series aircraft. It also purchased the Flottorp and Aeromatic line of propeller s. In 1958 the Federal Aviation Act was enacted. Among the many things the Act did was to establish the procedure for parts approvals and the manufacture of FAA certified replacement aircraft parts. Universal immediately responded to these new demands and received some of the first FAA Parts Manufacturing Approvals (PMA’s) issued under the authority of the new FAA.
Setting the Current Course
On April 25, 1963 Eddie Dyer died. On his instructions, his wife Veda Dyer sold the company, but in 1964 under new ownership, the company floundered.
Eddie evaluated the nationwide potential for business and believed one of the easiest ways to acquire spare parts was to establish a salvage yard, which he did at Sky Ranch Airport. Wrecked and damaged aircraft were purchased and disassembled for useable parts.
Unwilling to see Eddie’s hard work destroyed, in 1965 Veda bought the company back. In the 17 years prior to Eddie’s death he had taken the company from an obscure aircraft maintenance facility to a worldrenowned part manufacturing company. Universal Aircraft Industries was re-organized and its name, Universal Aircraft Industries, was shortened to the current registered trade name of Univair Aircraft Corp.
The used aircraft parts division filled a need and became very successful, but it soon became evident that the air craft salvage business alone would not supply sufficient replacement parts. Commonly damaged parts such as landing gear, cowling and control surfaces remained in short supply.
The company was back in Dyer hands and Veda became General Manager and CEO of Univair Aircraft Corporation. She found the need to narrow the focus of the company and concentrate on areas that were more profitable and where the company was more efficient.

Some of the Type Certificates were sold, most of the specialized maintenance shops were closed and the salvage yard was sold. Under Vedaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s capable management, the company continued to expand its presence in support of the worldwide light aircraft industry. In her 11 years as CEO she set the course which Univair follows today.
Many of its customers have assumed or have been led to believe that it also has the Type Certificates, engineering and tooling for all the older aircraft it supports, including the older Pipers. Unfortunately, this is not so. However, Univairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Piper inventory is one of its largest.
Passing Down the Generations
In the early 1970s, the cities of Denver and Aurora began encroaching the Sky Ranch Airport. There was talk of sale of the property, closing of the airport and industrial development. Steve Dyer, Eddie and Vedaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, took on the project of moving the company to a new facility just off the airport property in 1972. This is where the company has remained to today. Veda retired in 1976 and Steve took command of Univair as General Manager and CEO. In the 30 years under Steveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s watch the plant grew from 44,000 sq. ft. to 62,000 sq. ft. after a major expansion in 2003. Under his leadership, Univair held more PMAs for out-of-production aircraft than any other company in the US. In 2006, Steve turned over the operation of the company to the third generation of the Dyer family, Jim Dyer. Jim maintains the legacy left by his father, Steve, and grandparents, Eddie a nd Veda Dyer. The company has evolved from being housed in a half dozen war-surplus hangars and various outbuildings to a single purposebuilt 62,000 sq. ft. facility.

Currently, Univair owns three aircraft Type Certificates: one for the Stinson 108 series and two for the Ercoupe series (one for the two earliest models of the Ercoupe and the other for the late r models of the Ercoupe, Forney, Alon and M-10 Cadet). Univair also holds thousands of PMAs for Aeronca, Champion, Citabria, Decathlon Scout, Cessna, Luscombe, Piper and Taylorcraft.
Building a Parts Support Empire

Over the years, Univair has been able to purchase a few foreign military inventories and numerous parts directly from Piper or their distributors. However, most new Piper parts have been added to its Piper line by Univair, which has done all the necessary work to make them one part at a time. It is a slow process of drawing up blueprints, doing engineering reports, making tooling, inspecting and working the paperwork through the FAA, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one Univair has been doing for the better part of 70 years. After a while, it all adds up to several thousand parts.
Leadership, Vision and Dedication
Though the Dyer family leadership and vision has been vital in the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s success, Steve has stated many times that the success of the company is not due to his efforts alone. Without the hard work and dedicated effort of many employees who cared about their work and the welfare of the company, none of this would have been possible.
Jim has overseen major developments in technology and the efficiency resulting from these changes. Currently, Univair operates three CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) turning centers, two CNC vertical milling centers, one CNC laser cen ter, one CNC high definition plasma tube contouring machine and two CNC press brakes.
Univair has made an effort to recognize and reward these individuals. Consequently, about half of the employees have been with the company for more than 10 years. One of Univairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s greatest assets is the collective knowledge of its employees. Univairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entire staff is dedicated to supporting the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Classic Aircraftâ&#x20AC;? fleet.

It installs Leonardoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Heliwise health and usage monitoring system (HUMS) analysis libraries on the aircraft. Skytracâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ISAT-200A data acquisition unit then monitors for exceedances. The system monitors more than 500 HUMS indicators in real time, alerts ground crew as soon as an in-flight exceedance is detected, and streamlines the HUMS and flight data monitoring (FDM) file download process post-flight. The system speeds aircraft turn times by giving maintenance technicians insight into emerging technical issues and time to prepare for them before the aircraft lands and further saves time by avoiding postflight data processing. JetSupport recently installed its first Rockwell Collinsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Pro Line Fusion Retrofit on a King Air B200. The upgrade is the new standard for King Air aircraft, which â&#x20AC;&#x153;makes the aircraft compliant with all future (2020) mandates and requirements, for example ADS-B out LPV, Synthetic Vision and much more,â&#x20AC;? said the Amsterdam-based company. This Pro Line Fusion Retrofit is available for King Air B200- and King Air B300-series. There will be an event in the near future for demonstration. In March JetSupport extended the part 145-approved maintenance organization approval with the Beech King Air 200 series. Italian manufacturer Curti Aerospace has tested the ballistic parachute for its new Zefhir two-seat turbine helicopter. The parachute is designed to be deployed in an emergency from an aerodynamic pod mounted above the main rotor mast. The test was made over Oristano-Fenosu airport at 984 feet and a speed of 30 knots, and slowed the descent rate to 14.5 knots following a simulated engine failues, said Zefhir. Curti said the ground impact generated deceleration forces that were well within those that would safeguard the pilot and passenger/co-pilot/student. Bologna University was also involved in the program, which was funded by the European Commission, along with Curti itself, PBS VelkĂĄ BĂteĹĄ of the Czech Republic and Junkers Profly of Germany. Curti launched the Zefhir, which has a MTOW of 1,540 pounds, at the Aero Friedrichshafen show in April. It has an all-composite construction, and is powered by a PBS TS100 turboshaft engine, driving a two-blade main rotor system. Garminâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GFC 500 autopilot for singleengine piston aircraft has received FAA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for several additional aircraft models. The aircraft models now approved include the Grumman AA-5 series (AA-5 Traveler, AA-5A Cheetah, AA-5B Tiger, AG-5B Tiger) and the Piper PA-28 (140). The GFC 500 autopilot integrates with the G5 electronic flight instrument or a combination of both the G5 and G500 TXi flight display. The autopilot mode controller contains large dedicated keys and knobs, a control wheel that allows for easy adjustments to aircraft pitch, airspeed and vertical speed and a level button that returns the aircraft to straight-and-level flight. Garmin ESP comes as a standard feature with the GFC 500 autopilot, helping the pilot maintain a stable flight condition. ESP functions independently of the autopilot and works in the background to help pilots avoid inadvertent flight attitudes or bank angles and provide airspeed protection while the pilot is hand-flying the aircraft. Pilots can fly fully coupled descent Vertical Navigation (VNAV) profiles throughout the en route and terminal phases of flight with a GTN 750/650 navigator. They can select, couple and fly various instrument approaches, including GPS, ILS, VOR, LOC and back course approaches.

Trip Assistant is an enhancement to ForeFlightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advanced web-based flight planning toolset, the U.S. company added. Garmin Announces Software Upgrades Garmin has upgraded a number of its software offerings including for the GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigators, G500 TXi/G600 TXi and G500/G600 flight displays, and the GFC 500/600 autopilots. Meanwhile, the G5 electronic flight instrument for certificated aircraft has been approved for use as a standby instrument when paired with the G500 TXi or G500 flight displays. To assist in descent planning and energy management, pilots can take advantage of VNAV profiles throughout the en route and terminal phases of flight within the GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigators when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re paired with the G500 TXi/G600 TXi, G500/G600 or G5. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Within the GTN, pilots can easily enter altitude constraints on the flight plan page to set-up a vertical descent profile. Pilots also experience a near-seamless transition from VNAV to an arrival and instrument approach,â&#x20AC;? said Garmin. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Once an arrival or approach is loaded and activated, the GTN automatically populates step-down altitudes or any applicable altitude restrictions. If ATC issues an unpublished altitude restriction, pilots can enter those altitudes manually into the active flight plan under the VNAV field.â&#x20AC;? Also new to Garmin, users can now utilise the Garmin Pilot app on Apple mobile devices to view real-time engine information via Flight Stream 510 when the app is paired with an EIS-capable TXi flight display or the G1000 NXi integrated flight deck. Upon landing, the flight data log is wirelessly uploaded to the flyGarmin website and is stored securely within the app and on flyGarmin. Tecnam Wins Polish Order For P2008 The Polish Medical Air Rescue service has ordered three Tecnam P2008JC Mk IIs for transferring patients. PMAR has transferred more than 116,000 patients since its inception in 2000. It has two aircraft and 27 helicopters, and had performed almost 10,000 flights by October. Politicians on both sides of the Atlantic have come together to call for a new Europe/UK-US bilateral on pilot medicals. APPG and U.S. lawmakers from the Congressional General Aviation Caucus have written a letter to the FAA, the CAA and EASA calling for â&#x20AC;&#x153;a bilateral agreement to provide recognition and acknowledgement for new medical standards.â&#x20AC;?
The text contains explicit language on the need for efficient certification and validation procedures, along with new roles for EASA in the areas of oversight, security, research and beyond. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The new concept of a pan-European maintenance provider or operator under EASA oversight is a vital new provision,â&#x20AC;? said GAMA. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This lays the foundations for an EASA 2.0, the result of a mammoth effort from EASA, the EU institutions and stakeholders,â&#x20AC;? said GAMA president and CEO, Pete Bunce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Industry, however, will see little change until the underlying technical rules are in place. We now have the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; but we still need the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;howâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.â&#x20AC;? The new regulation foresees a maximum of five years to update EASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current implementing rules, including those covering operations, licensing and airworthiness. A key element in the new performance-based approach is to ensure that regulations focus on safety objectives rather than prescribing rigid solutions that cannot keep pace with technological innovation. www.gama.aero
In the letter, MPâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Senators and Congressman argue that new alternative medical standards recently adopted by both governments have made the â&#x20AC;&#x153;processâ&#x20AC;Ś unnecessarily cumbersome and costly, whilst doing little to improve safetyâ&#x20AC;?. Currently, separate medical certificates are required for pilots to be able to fly in the UK and the US. It is a shared belief that equal recognition of medical certificates â&#x20AC;&#x153;will allow for increased general aviation activity in each country,â&#x20AC;? said the APPG. The joint letter also goes on to call on the CAA, FAA and EASA to â&#x20AC;&#x153;further expand and explore ways to issue pilots licences on the basis of a foreign pilot licences.â&#x20AC;? www.generalaviationappg.uk
AYJET Purchases Six Sonaca 200s AYJET, a flight training organisation based in Istanbul (Turkey), has selected the new Sonaca two-seater single-engine aircraft.
EASA To Accept UK 3rd Country Approval Applications In preparing for Brexit, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has agreed to start processing applications for third-country approvals from UK approval holders covering maintenance, production, and pilot training, as well as medical organisations. EASA stated: â&#x20AC;&#x153;As the withdrawal and transitional agreement negotiations are currently underway, EASA cannot yet determine the ultimate impact of the withdrawal on EASA or its stakeholders within the EU-27 and four associated countries or within the UK. The withdrawal will significantly alter EASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cooperation with UK authorities and will not leave EASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stakeholders untouched. As the withdrawal process evolves more certainties will emerge.â&#x20AC;? EASA said applicants should bear in mind that the initiative is being launched â&#x20AC;&#x153;in anticipation of a possible so-called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;no dealâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; scenario which would result in the United Kingdomâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s effective withdrawal as of midnight on 29 March 2019.â&#x20AC;? It added that current approvals should remain in place (assuming they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expire anyway) should a transition arrangement be agreed, giving an additional 21 months to 31 December 2020. www.easa.europa.eu

London Biggin Hill Airport intends to develop a Light Aviation Centre (LAC) to bring together all the GA and training schools into one facility, and is calling for bids from entities wishing to develop and operate the facility. It said in a statement on September 18, that the airport is “seeking a development partner for a new Light Aviation Centre (LAC) to continue its role as a general aviation airport, whilst growing its business aviation activity.” The new centre “will include hangars with a minimum capacity of 21,000 sq ft and an aircraft apron of the same size. Much of the existing light aviation parking, both indoor and outdoor, will be relocated to the LAC.” Will Curtis, managing director, London Biggin Hill Airport, stated: “We want light aviation to continue here at the airport, so we are constructing a dedicated centre in support of this activity.

Issues discussed included EASA Roadmap 2.0, the next round of regulatory improvements for GA; challenges and opportunities presented by the new Basic Regulation that is now in force; representation at the ICAO Air Navigation Conference in Montreal in October (one issue is new medical standards and possible mutual recognition); ADS-B, with mandates looming in the US and Europe at the end of 2019 and mid2020, respectively; closer cooperation with AOPA US; fees and charges at European airports; and the new IAOPA Europe joint database allowing Europe-wide AOPA member benefits. AOPA members in Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland can already take advantage, while AOPA members in other countries are being advised to contact their national
AOPA representatives. Meanwhile AOPA Denmark has boosted its total number of members from 200 to 1200 following a merger with the Danish Motorflying Union. The new association with the name of AOPA DMU encompasses 31 local flying clubs and their members. The new association has two full time employees in the secretariat which is also handling more than 600 members of the Danish Ultralight Flying Association. “With the merger Denmark now has the strongest possible association to represent GA. The board has already met to set the priorities for the future: Getting more people to take a pilot license is one of the top priorities. Also high on the list is making life easier for aircraft owners and pilots by securing Agas supplies at more airfields; and helping aircraft owners getting the best out of the new Part M-Light regulation, which hopefully will very soon be a reality,” said AOPA DMU.
IAOPA Fights For Fair Airport Charges According to IAOPA Europe, “The dramatic increase of fees and charges at some European airports has a very negative impact on general aviation, especially if there are no alternative GA aerodromes available in the vicinity of these airports.” It highlighted in particular the increase of charges at the 14 airports in Greece operated by Fraport. The reference is EU Directive 2009/12/EC, dated 11 March 2009, on airport charges. The directive “clearly states that airport charges must not discriminate between airport users,” said IAOPA Europe. It also requires that airport users or the representatives of associations of users should be consulted regularly with respect to the operation of the system of airport charges, the level of airport charges and, when appropriate, the quality of service
provided. Consultation will generally take place at least once a year (some exceptions granted). Airport users or representatives of airport users shall be informed about the components on which the height of charges are based on. “The EU gives us the opportunity to ask for transparency on airport charges on national level, and states that we must not be discriminated against. For GA the cost of several hundreds of Euros per landing is clearly prohibitive,” said IAOPA Europe. It says the real challenge lies at a national level. “How can we defend the interests of GA against pressure from the airlines and the airport operators? We need to defend our GA aerodromes in the vicinity of big and busy airports. This is definitely an issue to be continued,” said the group. www.iaopa.eu

Should Aircraft Owners Use Delaware Corps? The US state of Delaware is known as a very entrepreneur-friendly place. For
this reason, many business owners set up corporations in Delaware rather than their home state. But is this always a good idea? Aircraft Guaranty explores…
It’s not uncommon nor is it illegal for an owner to set up an LLC to hold the title to an aircraft. In general (and not only for aircraft owners) the taxing structure in Delaware is one of the most favorable for small businesses and LLCs. So, the term “Delaware Corp” refers to any company that is incorporated in Delaware in order to benefit from the state’s laws.
Aircraft Owners and Delaware Corps
Aircraft owners may set up an LLC to hold title to their airplane. This common practice is used to shelter the owner from liability. The aircraft title will be set up as a legitimate structure that is owned by the LLC. Often it is the only thing the LLC owns. If the aircraft does any damage, the LLC is responsible, not the aircraft owner. This all sounds like a good idea, right? Unfortunately, when “good ideas” are misused or overused, problems can arise for those who have good intentions. Delaware Corps have become an easy way for aircraft owners to register an aircraft illegally. Legal Zoom explains why this is: You can form a corporation more quickly in Delaware than in just about any other state, and, unlike some states, Delaware does not require you to publicly disclose the names of the corporation’s directors or shareholders. Delaware Corps and the FAA The FAA is cracking down on aircraft owned by Delaware Corps. They are finding that in some cases Delaware Corps have been used by non-US citizens to illegally set up a corporation and then register their aircraft as an asset of the corporation.
Instead, aircraft owners are asked to fill out a Statement in Support of LLC which asks them to check a box stating whether or not they are a US citizen. Much is based on the honor system, and there is no true policing on behalf of the FAA. Nonetheless, the FAA may question the paperwork on any aircraft at any time and for any reason. Because of the ease of setting up a Delaware Corp, the FAA is taking closer looks at aircraft registered under these structures. They can and often do search Delaware’s website to look up the members or officers of the corporation. Then they can ask the person requesting registration for a passport or other proof of US citizenship. The bottom line is that eventually the aircraft owners can experience problems if their registration is not obtained legally. The aircraft may end up with a clouded title, aircraft ownership may be legally questioned, or the aircraft may be seized. You might remember our earlier article that explained who is eligible to register an aircraft in the United States. Two thirds of a corporation’s membership must be US citizens. Consider the case of a non-citizen aircraft owner who has a friend or relative who is a US citizen. If they set up a corporation in Delaware under the US citizen’s name and list their aircraft as an asset of the corporation, they can operate the aircraft under an FAA registration. But, because they are not a true corporation officer or owner, this is illegal. The FAA’s registration system is not foolproof. Jetfly recently become the first European fractional ownership provider to take delivery of a Pilatus PC-24 twinjet. The new aircraft joins Jetfly’s existing fleet of 22 Pilatus PC-12 turboprop singles (see below) and three Cessna Citation CJ3s. The Luxembourg-based operator took the keys to PC-24 S/N 111 during a handover ceremony at the aircraft manufacturer’s headquarters in Stans, Switzerland. The company has three more PC-24s on order. The operator appointed French designer Philippe Starck to create the livery and interior of its PC-24s, which have eight-passenger cabins with cream leather seats and carpeting, and cabinetry with black-brown exteriors and electric lime interiors. Luxembourg-based Jetfly already operates 22 PC-12s and plans to deploy the PC-24 in parallel to extend its current range of services. It plans to use the Super Versatile Jet to provide customers with a fast, safe, uncomplicated means of flying to their destination.
In addition to the larger cabin and greater speed, Jetfly customers will also enjoy other PC-24 benefits such as the large cargo door which comes as standard and the ability to use very short runways.
The PC-24 is the only aircraft combining the versatility of a turboprop with the cabin size of a medium-light jet, and the performance of a light jet. Turbine Islander OK’d By Canadian Regulator Britten-Norman has received Transport Canada Civil Aviation (TCCA) type certification for its BN2T, which is powered by two 320 shaft horsepower Rolls-Royce B17 turboprops, driving Hartzell 3-bladed propellers. The UK company, which has based on the Isle of Wight and at Lee-on-Solent Airport, has been planning to expand its presence on the North American continent, and has a parallel process aimed at gaining FAA approval for the BN2T-4S Defender. Falling Jet A1 fuel prices in Canada have also made the cost of operating a turbine-based aircraft even more attractive, compared to the piston-powered Islander. Britten–Norman business development manager Lara Harrison said: “We have generated a great deal of interest in our piston and turboprop variants of the Islander in Canada in the last 18 months. The Islander already serves in a variety of interesting roles in the wider region and is viewed by many as the backbone of operations into remote strips in areas from Alaska through to the Yukon and as far east as Quebec to Labrador. Canadian certification of our more powerful Turbine Islander will give operators the option of benefiting from the Islander’s characteristic rugged reliability with the added benefit of an increased payload.” The aircraft comes equipped with Garmin G600TXi avionics while optional extras include leather seating, enlarged baggage bay door and a sliding door to the main cabin which can be opened in flight. Broker Warns of Pilot Shortage
The airport is on course to hit a new movement record of almost 31,000, which would surpass the previous high (before the 2008 global financial crisis). The movement ceiling of 50,000 set in agreement with Rushmoor Borough Council remains in place and gives plenty of growth potential. The airport can take anything up to 80t MTOW, so up to Boeing BBJs and Airbus ACJ320 family. O’Reilly put the growth down to three factors–the occasional closing of RAF Northolt, which takes a lot of business aviation traffic for London; difficulty operators have getting peak time slots at airports such as Luton; and a hard-to-prove effect from anecdotal evidence of investors coming in to the UK looking for opportunities from Brexit. O’Reilly said work has started to prepare the ground for Gulfstream’s new facility at Farnborough, and that the new controlled airspace which was approved this summer by the CAA should come into effect at the end of 2019, with new SIDS and STARS and better noise profiles. Some airports in the region have objected, notably Lasham which is renowned for gliding, and the UK Parliament’s APPG group has launched an inquiry into whether the current CAA ACP process is fit for purpose. www.tagfarnborough.com

The delivery came almost four years after the G500 and G600 were announced. Aircraft broker Colibri Aircraft has warned that the shortage of pilots is hurting business aviation operators and having knock-on effects in the recovery of the sector, including the market for business and general aviation aircraft. The London-based company reportedly said a huge shortage of pilots in the European private aviation sector means owners cannot always count on using their aircraft when they want to. Colibri believes the problem will get worse, with airlines recruiting existing GA instructors and pilots to the right hand seat of airliners as a wave or retirements hits. Growing markets in Asia, the Middle East are compounding the problem. According to the London-based company, some 7 in 10 aircraft sales it is involved in face difficulties where owners cannot be guaranteed sufficient pilots or crew. This is up from 1 in 5 only five years ago. “Helicopters are an integral part of any logistics concept for offshore wind farms,” said Dennis Bernitz, head of Western Europe sales. “Helicopters can be used to deploy technicians or medical personnel in emergencies, even in rough seas, and can also transport operating personnel between the shore and the wind farm.” Another factor Airbus highlighted was that wind farms are being built further and further from the shore, and helicopters can cover the distance much faster than a boat. To aid marketing, Airbus Helicopters has developed a logistics calculator for wind farm operators, which takes into account all relevant factors – weather, location and the number of turbines in the wind farm – to determine the most economical and environmentally friendly logistics solution which includes options on the mix of transport and special-purpose vessels. Airbus Helicopters offers the H135, H145 and H175 rotorcraft and the H160 is also expected to be available to this market also. “With their two engines and four-axis autopilot, these Airbus helicopters have the ability to hover in the air and safely and precisely winch down personnel or goods to exactly where they are needed,” said the company. www.airbus.com
Leonardo Part of Big US Air Force Win Boeing and Italy’s Leonardo were recently selected by the US Air Force to provide up to 84 MH-139 helicopters, aimed at replacing Bell UH-1Ns Hueys that are used to protect for security purposes. The new helicopters will start to enter service in 2021. The MH-139s, which are based on the AW139, will be assembled at Leonardo’s northeast Philadelphia plant, before heading to Boeing’s Philadelphia facility. In excess of 900 AW-139s are in service, the fleet having logged more than two million flight hours. HeliGroup Receives First Airbus ACH135 Helionix for VIP Use UK operator HeliGroup took delivery of the first ever ACH135 Helionix for VIP charter operations from Airbus Corporate Helicopters at the annual yacht show in Monaco recently. The handover event was attended by representatives of the global aviation and yachting industries and supported by the Royal Air Force Red Arrows (pictured, top), guests of honour following their air display at the yacht show. Following in the footsteps of the UK Ministry of Defence, which took delivery of the first H135 Helionix in 2017, HeliGroup selected the aircraft in the lightweight, sports car-inspired ACH Line interior fit (pictured, below), configured with the ACH135 five-seater business configuration. In this way, HeliGroup becomes the first VIP charter company worldwide to mark the introduction of the ACH135s step-change Helionix capability to private and Business Aviation.
