EASA Certification

As of November 18, 2015 the Eclipse 550 has achieved EASA certification. "This certification is an incredible development. Not only can we sell into charter services, but this also opens up sales to private aviators across Europe who only want to fly an EASA certified aircraft. We already have sales contingent upon certification and are excited to make these deliveries early next year." Modifications on the aircraft in order to comply with EASA regulations are minimal and can be completed in less than a day. Jetlounge is currently delivering an Eclipse 550 which will be the first 550 to be operated commercially on the EASA registry within Europe. With its 48-59 gal/hr fuel consumption in average cruise and lowest operational costs per hour (EUR 800/hr) it is a perfect airplane for AOC operators.

High-Level Food Provider Flies Privately MR GIRGENTI WITH HIS ECLIPSE 500 TE

If you run your business as a one-man band, how can Business Aviation work for you? Rani Singh asks Victor Girgenti, whose Longview Trading, Inc. deals in high-end deli products for supermarkets’ private-label programs... ictor Girgenti, 58, is an engaging individual who responds to requests and questions at lightning speed. He manages to do this while flying privately and running his successful food empire daily, single-handed. His business supplies the finest supermarkets with very high quality cold cuts, deli cheeses and deli salads with their customer’s name on the label. “For years most retailers would place the worst quality product in their label,” Victor highlights. “I started my business over twenty years ago – and changing the mindset of the deli world has been an experience!” The products Longview manufactures have the lowest sodium levels in the industry. “No fillers or extenders are ever used. MSG is not in any product we produce. No artificial flavoring,” he notes. All meat is from the US, and Victor processes it in a variety of different plants across the nation, keeping each species in separate plants to avoid cross contamination. A decade ago, Victor’s business was doing well, so he started to make more use of his winter home in West Palm Beach, Florida (he lives in Sands Point, New York, a wonderful harbor town just outside New York City). “The reason I started to take flying lessons was that when we used to charter a jet before I was able to fly, I would watch the pilots and worry that if they had eaten, let’s say a bad fish for dinner and had an attack of food poisoning, it might be helpful to know how to yell ‘HELP’ on the radio,” (Victor would charter a private jet to take his wife and two Labradors, Callie and Hobbie, to Florida). “After the first lesson, and since my golf game had not improved for 20 years, I decided to keep taking flying lessons,” Victor recalls. “Of course had it not been for Callie and Hobbie, I never would have chartered a jet to begin with. Thanks to those two most wonderful dogs I came to realize that private flying would also change my life and business. I now do animal rescue missions with the Eclipse 500 I own, bringing dogs from kill shelters in the south to sanctuaries in the

northeastern states.” Victor never dreamt he would one day fly himself to Florida. But he stayed the course working his way from a Cessna T182T, to a Columba 400, to a Piper Meridian and for the last two years has owned an Eclipse 500 TE (Total Eclipse). Today, he flies to his clients along the eastern seaboard of the US, from Florida to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Victor doesn’t mass produce, and is happy trading with those who appreciate his level of quality. “Being able to jump into the Eclipse, go, and return quickly makes optimum efficiency possible.”

realized I had seen enough. While originally I was planning to stay and attend the convention a few more days, because I have my own aircraft I got up Monday morning, called the airport and asked that my airplane be fueled and ready for departure within 30 minutes. “If I was on an airline, the effort and added cost to do something like that would be huge. While everyone else was still in Denver, I was back at my desk doing important business.” Why the Eclipse? Victor feels that the Eclipse is his perfect vehicle. “It is fast at 375 knots, and able to fly way above the weather with a ceiling of 41,000’,” he enthuses. “It is comfortable, and very quiet - normal volume conversation is not a problem, and in fact no headsets are offered to the passengers. “Best of all is the lack of fuel burn - trips from New York City to West Palm Beach, Florida only burn 190 gallons,” he adds. Victor’s business philosophy is built on the belief that every call, email or text needs to be answered within minutes. Delaying an hour is not an option – thus he has taken care to select an aircraft with sufficient in-flight connectivity so that he can be productive while flying. “Being in touch in the air is a must,” he concludes. “Customers don't care where you are, as long as you respond quickly. Being able to do so, and the time savings made possible by flying to your schedule, are the ultimate advantages of Business Aviation.”

Out and Home in a Day Previously, Victor was flying commercially on a regular basis to one customer in Jacksonville, Florida. “I was flying too much. You would think from NYC to Jacksonville there would be many flights daily. That’s not the case, and most trips there required a departure the day before the meeting. If the meeting ran late, I had to spend another night in Jacksonville before flying home on the airlines. “Now I wake up in my own bed, enjoy a workout, check the stock markets, check emails and drive to my local airport,” he smiles. “I put my car into my hangar and fly off to Jacksonville. Two hours later I am there in plenty of time for the meeting. Afterwards, I’m back home in another two hours and having dinner with my wife. Flying yourself is worth every penny.” Working from home, every hour counts for Victor. Giving Back To Aviation Victor has a simple, but effective sideline business that he feels gives back to the industry that has helped him so much. “Manufacturers such as Piper build aircraft that use the same airframe for both piston (gas burning) and turbine (jet fuel burning) airplanes,” he notes. “The folks that fill the airplanes with fuel at the airports don't always know which engine is installed - and if they make a mistake and place the wrong fuel-type in an aircraft the results can be deadly. A simple warning system was needed to alert these line-people as to what type of fuel was needed in an aircraft. “I invented and market a product called FuelTape - a roll of tape that states the type of fuel that the aircraft needs, or should not be fueled with. What are the Pros and Cons to Consider Before Buying One?

These aircraft will sell for around $600-800k more than the unimproved models and offer new owners a turn-key solution to modern avionics. “As new avionics mandates are required, the more modern avionics suites will invoke less downtime and expense to meet those mandates,” noted Koltes. The original Falcon 50 was delivered with an analogue Collins avionics package, but has since gone through several changes to include Collins EFIS 86, Proline II, Proline IV and most recently – and still readily available – the Proline 21 avionics suite, which provides flight crews the advantages of a modern, fully integrated glass flight deck. “Pilot situational awareness is dramatically improved with the Proline 21 suite, therefore improving safety, and making it a must-have for any purchaser considering a Falcon 50,” Koltes outlines.

Because of its popularity and the steady demand for the Falcon 50 since its 1980 introduction, there have been several upgrades developed for this versatile business jet, notes John Koltes, President & Owner, Jet Trader Group …….. The performance of its three TFE731-3-1D engines allows this midsize Falcon 50 to take off from most airports with runways of 5,000’ or longer, and once airborne, carry its passengers an impressive 3,147nm, providing transcontinental reach within the US. However, when purchasing a Falcon 50 there are several factors for a buyer to consider. “A key consideration for prospective Falcon 50 owners is checking the maintenance status of the airplane,” reveals John Koltes, Jet Trader Group. “The maintenance status of an aircraft can make the value fluctuate by as much as $1.0m. The two big maintenance expenses on the Falcon 50 are the 12-year gear overhaul requirement and the 6year ‘C’ check airframe inspection. A prospective buyer should be aware of these as well as when they will come due on a prospective purchase.” Koltes also encourages prospective buyers to consider purchasing a Falcon 50 that has upgraded

Powerplants Similar to the avionics, there have been several engine upgrades made available for the Falcon 50. The original engines are Honeywell TFE731-3-1D series engines, which provide 3,700lbs of thrust and require hot section inspections (MPI) every 1,400 hours and an engine overhaul (CZI) every 4,200 hours. The -3D-1C, -4-1C, and TFE731-40 engine upgrades offer the Falcon 50 owner better performance, increased fuel efficiencies, longer range, and reduced maintenance costs while changing the inspection requirements for the MPI inspection to a 2,100-hour interval. Thus only one hot section inspection is required between engine overhauls, saving a prospective owner significant maintenance outlay. The -3D-1C engine upgrade was performed on

several early Falcon 50s, while the TFE731-40 was a standard installation on Falcon 50EX models. Most engines are either enrolled on the Manufacturer’s Service Plan (MSP) or Jet Support Services, Incorporated (JSSI) engine plans. A summary of the differences in the engine performance parameters can be seen in Table A (below). Cabin Configuration With an interior measuring 23.5ft (length) x 6.1ft (width) x 5.9ft (height), the typical cabin for a Falcon 50 model accommodates nine passengers. Configurations vary, but most consist of a forward galley, forward four-place executive club seats, and aft two-place club seats across from a three-place divan. “The most desirable configuration also includes a lavatory located in the aft cabin,” Koltes adds. “Occupants’ baggage is never an issue when you consider the extra-large external baggage compartment.” Market Summary Falcon 50s are available in a wide price range from around $1.0-7.4m, and from the details posted above, you can see what contributes to the variation in price from one model to the next. Early model Falcon 50 prices appear to have levelled off in the market while the later models continue to see quarterly price declines, according to Vref. “With the upgrades available for the early models, prospective owners can find great value in an early model Falcon 50 with engines upgraded to the -3D-1C status, and a Proline 21 avionics suite can be purchased for under $2.0m,” summarizes Koltes. “At that price point, a new owner can purchase a great aircraft, add some more value to the jet with winglet options and advanced cabin entertainment systems, and still pay less than they would for a late model Falcon 50.

Cirrus also unveiled the Perspective Touch by Garmin flight deck and opened new facilities in Duluth for Vision Jet production. With over 550 orders, certification is planned for the first half of 2016 with deliveries set to begin shortly thereafter.

European Transaction Levels Stable

London-based Colibri Aircraft recently published a report on business aircraft sales activity during 2015; a year characterized by large price decreases but a stable level of transactions in terms of the number of aircraft sold. While aircraft sales in the USA remained strong during 2015, Europe was a net seller of aircraft with the three largest markets (Germany, UK and France) all seeing their private jet fleets shrink as the trend towards sales to the US continued. Mid-size aircraft (i.e. Citation Excel and the XLS) held their values quite well and saw a large decline in available inventory as buyers realised the value these aircraft offer. Light Jets held up well in terms of the number of transactions with the Citation Mustang being the highest-selling aircraft to European buyers. The Citation Bravo was the second highest selling aircraft in Europe. There were some sectors that saw major changes. For example the large aircraft market went from being quite resilient to seeing some of the largest price discounts. Of the top 10 selling aircraft to European buyers, seven were light jets, one was mid-size and two were large cabin aircraft. The high sale of light jets is largely attributable to the incredible value they represent.

There were some reasons to be positive. 2015 saw a number of transactions by European buyers for smaller and older aircraft with European lenders providing aircraft finance. Lack of finance has been a huge issue in recent years and the entry of the banks into the older European private aircraft market is a very positive indicator toward a much more buoyant market. Hopefully this trend will see more buyers coming to the market. Forward-Looking… So what can be expected for 2016? “We believe the large price decreases of 2015 will continue into 2016,” predicts Oliver Stone, MD, Colibri Aircraft. “However, there will still be strong transaction numbers as the aircraft on offer are of such good value, particularly among the 8+ year-old aircraft that have seen the bulk of their depreciation already. Dassault Production Dassault Aviation confirmed a two-year delay and production standstill on its all-new Falcon 5X because of ongoing problems with the Snecma Silvercrest engine. The long-range, large-cabin jet which was rolled out in June last year is now not expected to fly until 2017, with first deliveries in early 2020. 5X customers have been informed and though the company will not reveal backlog details for the aircraft, chief executive Eric Trappier says he expects “some order erosion” and states the company will try to offer “other solutions” to buyers expecting an aircraft before 2020. ■ More information visit -www.dassaultfalcon.com

Textron’s Positive Results Textron Aviation delivered more jets and recorded a higher profit in 2015, and it expects to see higher sales and profitability in 2016, despite a Q4 revenue decline in 2015. Textron Inc.’s revenue was $3.9bn in Q4 2015, down 4.2% compared with $4.1bn in revenue in Q4 2014. APRIL 2016 Luigi “Gino” Pascale is a native of Naples, Italy, whose passion for aviation began during the 1930’s when with his brother Giovanni “Nino” they won many model plane races. The two brothers built their first aircraft, the P48 Astore, which flew on the 2nd of April 1951. At the time the Professor Luigi had just graduated with a Master Degree as a Mechanical Engineer (the Department of Aeronautical Engineering was created later by the Professor Pascale himself) and started his career at the University of Naples as assistant of Professor Nobile. Umberto Nobile was also an outstanding aviation character, undertaking the first expedition to North Pole with an airship. Aircraft Engineers new UK-N.Ireland Maintenance base opened

Tom Peghiny, CEO of Flight Design USA, told AVweb that his company is separate and independent from Flight Design GmbH, but the situation in Germany does have an impact. "We couldn't get aircraft from [Germany] for nearly two years," he said. "We negotiated to be able to buy our airplanes and parts from AeroJones [a Taiwanese company operating in China]. Those negotiations were successful, and we expect to take delivery of the first airplanes from China next month." AeroJones will be able to meet his needs for U.S. deliveries of two to three CTLS series aircraft per month, Peghiny said, and also can supply parts for the current fleet. Peghiny added that he has orders and deposits in place for airplanes from Germany, "so we are actually creditors" of Flight Design GmbH. He said none of those airplanes on order were destined for U.S. customers, but were to go to the U.S. dealer network. Flight Design GmbH employs about 20 workers in Germany and about 100 at its production plant in Ukraine. The company was founded in 1988 and has delivered about 1,500 aircraft. The e-flight Expo, featuring alternative drive concepts, will also take place for the eight time, under the motto “Electrical, Ecological, Evolutionary.” Electrically powered ultralights, powered gliders and rotary wing aircraft will be its focus. Several innovative machines will be the highlight of 2016. The most unconventional electrically powered aircraft is the velocopter, which celebrated its premiere at the AERO two years ago. In the meantime, this 18-rotor, twoperson aerial vehicle has undergone multiple unmanned test flights, and flight testing using a test pilot is scheduled to begin soon. Engineering conglomerate Siemens will be showing two vehicles that feature the German company’s powerful electric drives.

Ultralights are the booming segment of general aviation. This class includes powered aircraft with take-off weights of up to 472 kilograms, but also gliders, gyrocopters and helicopters. There is more innovation here than in any other area of general aviation, not least because, next to gliding, flying ultralights is the most affordable way to fly, both in terms of operating costs and license costs.

Messe Friedrichshafen CEO Klaus Wellmann and AERO project leader Roland Bosch are purposefully focusing on new impulses: “a technicallyoriented trade show like the AERO must also show how fascinating the subject of flight is,” emphasized Roland Bosch. UK's 'Greatest Pilot' Eric Brown Dies At 97

Many tributes have been made for Captain Eric Brown - the Navy's most decorated pilot following his death aged 97. Dubbed Britain's greatest pilot, Capt Brown died on Sunday at East Surrey Hospital following a short illness, his family said in a statement. The veteran, who was born in Leith in Edinburgh and later moved to Sussex, had flown 487 types of aircraft and held three Guinness World Records in a career Eric Brown in front of the spanning 31 years. British astronaut Tim Peake tweeted from space: "So sad to hear that Capt Eric 'Winkle' Brown has died - to my mind the greatest test pilot who has ever lived. A true inspiration." Paul Beaver, a friend of Capt Brown's for decades, said: "For a man who had achieved so much in one lifetime, he was modest and self-effacing yet always ready to help." Capt Brown is survived by his partner Jean Kelly Brown and son Glen.

- Hartzell Teaches A&Ps How to Evaluate and Repair Minor Damage to Composite Hartzell Propeller has created a series of howto videos and a new field repair manual describing how to evaluate and repair Hartzell's structural composite propeller blades when they suffer minor damage. A true composite propeller is made from carbon fiber or Kevlar. "Unlike aluminum or wooden blades, Hartzell's composite propeller blades can be restored to their original dimensions over and over again. These materials are incredibly durable, but they are not entirely immune to damage," says Hartzell Technical Representative Kevin Ryan. "Don't be concerned if you experience minor damage from debris, such as a stone nick, paint damage, or a lead edge impact," he says. "As with aluminum blades, composite blade damage can be evaluated and often repaired on-wing by a certified Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanic using information provided by Hartzell." FAA STC for 3-blade MT-Propeller on Rockwell Commander 112, 112B MT-Propeller Entwicklung GmbH has received the FAA STC SA03658NY for the next generation 3blade scimitar composite propeller MTV-12-B/188-59f on the Rockwell Commander 112, 112B powered by the Lycoming Engines IO-360-C1D6 or IO-360C1D6 with approved “Turbonormalizer”. Bell Helicopter Announces 2015 Performance

APRIL 2016 The company also launched the Bell 407GXP and announced the largest helicopter order in Bell Helicopter history for 200 407GXPs to Air Methods Corporation. The first of those aircraft were delivered in January 2016. Advancements to the Bell 412 helped secure a major win in Japan and will serve as the foundation for Japan’s Ministry of Defence UH-X development programme. UH-X is a co-development programme between Bell Helicopter and Fuji Heavy Industries for approximately 150 helicopters, to be delivered over the next two decades.

NDARPA Selects Aurora to Build VTOL X-Plane Technology Demonstrator

Finmeccanica Helicopter Division has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Era Group Inc, for the development of the Emergency Medical Service variant of the AgustaWestland AW609 TiltRotor. Era is a major customer of AgustaWestland helicopters, both as an operator and a lessor â&#x20AC;&#x201C; recently including two AW189s. The signing of the agreement is strong confirmation of the future plans for the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first commercial tiltrotor, after the fatal accident of a prototype in October 2015. One prototype is currently available, and two more are in various stages of construction â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one in Italy and one at the company plant in Philadelphia. A year ago, Bristow Helicopters was announced as fulfilling a similar role in the offshore support and SAR operational roles. Bristow reported at the time that their role incuded addressing concepts around operations, regulations, maintenance, configuration optimization, as well as identifying possible areas of enhancement or modifications.

DRF completes sale and leaseback of two EC135s with Waypoint

ADAC marks 130,000 hours with IBF-fitted PW206 engines

“ADAC implemented the IBF in 2011 to directly address the environmental challenges its fleet encounters – which is absolutely critical for an emergency medical services provider,” said Irene Makris, Vice President, Marketing, P&WC. “The IBF device ensures there are no flight delays and allows the fleet to be operated for any kind of emergency mission, regardless of environment.” The IBF’s performance has allowed P&WC to extend the time between overhaul (TBO) on ADAC’s fleet of H135s from 4,000 to 4,500 hours. What’s more, Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul company ADAC Luftfahrt Technik has installed the IBF on more than 25 H135 aircraft and is able to assist other H135 operators in the region with IBF installation. “ADAC’s 130,000-hour milestone demonstrates that the IBF is highly effective in heightening the engine’s durability and performance envelope in a seamless manner. Airbus Helicopters rolls out H175 Flight Crew Operating Manual Airbus Helicopters is continuing to deliver on its commitment to safety as its number one priority with the release of the H175 Flight Crew Operating Manual (FCOM), coming just over a year after the release of the helicopter industry’s first-ever FCOM for the H225 in oil & gas configuration.

The newest FCOM, designed specifically for the super-medium H175 in offshore configuration, was developed using the same methodology and objectives as for the H225. “The FCOM is an important source document providing best practices and recommendations directly from the manufacturer,” explained Gilles Bruniaux, Airbus Helicopters Vice President of Aviation Safety. “When we began working on the very first FCOM, it was already part of a larger strategy to expand to other aircraft in the Airbus Helicopters fleet. The H175 FCOM is the latest step in this roadmap, and we are proud to be able to offer this second information source that contributes to standardized operations throughout the industry.” Following the model applied for the H225, topics covered by the H175 FCOM include aircraft manufacturer guidance for enhanced operational safety during both routine and abnormal situations, with work-share management among pilots, focusing on procedures for operating state of the art glass cockpits and automated systems. In this respect, the H175 FCOM brings new added value as being the first to introduce operational guidance for the latest-generation Helionix avionics systems. Airbus Helicopters will continue to update both existing FCOMs in accordance with upgrades initiated on the helicopters. Wales Air Ambulance tribute to former chairman as it moves to new HQ The name of the founder and chairman of the Wales Air Ambulance Charity will live on among future generations of medics and fundraisers. The lifesaving charity has named the boardroom and training centre at its newly-built headquarters in Dafen after Swansea businessman, the late Bob Palmer, who died in 2013. Mr Palmer’s wife Ann, alongside daughters Suzanne and Nicola, unveiled a plaque in memory of Mr Palmer in a ceremony at the new building. Under his stewardship, the air ambulance’s services extended across Wales with the introduction of midWales and North Wales helicopters. The charity was named Britain’s Air Ambulance of the Year at the 2009 Health Business Awards, and has carried out more than 23,000 missions to date. The new airbase development, which will be next to the headquarters, is being funded through a £500,000 appeal run by the air ambulance. Hacer Developments, which is delivering the project for Wales Air Ambulance Charity, has also accessed a property development grant for the construction of the office building through Carmarthenshire County Council. Once completed, the new base will feature the latest technology and facilities for the charity’s aircrew. It will also be the first time that Wales Air Ambulance has owned its own premises, saving tens of thousands of pounds a year in rent and fuel supply costs. The Wales Air Ambulance Charity is an all-Wales charity that provides air cover for those who face life-threatening illness or injuries. The charity relies entirely on donations to raise over £6 million every year to keep its three helicopters flying over Wales.
