Piper 26% Increase in 2016 Billings

Piper Aircraft, announced a 26.7% increase in aircraft billings for 2016. The year-end aircraft and billings shipments numbers were presented by Piper Aircraft President and CEO, Simon Caldecott, the 2017 Chairman of GAMA.
The substantial growth was driven of by the certification and delivery the new M600 Piper flagship SETP and a 68% YOY increase of Piper Archer primary trainer which aircraft helped drive Piper total billings up by nearly $32M vs 2015. Sales of all Piper trainers were steady, showing moderate growth at .8% for 2016. Deliveries continued to be largely concentrated within the North American market with more than 80% of aircraft delivered in that region. The remaining 20% were delivered outside of North America with the majority being shipped to the countries within the Pacific Rim.
“Our commitment to bring the M600 to market in 2016 as well as implementing a build to order business model has helped increase revenue while securing the health and future of Piper Aircraft. Drive or Fly with Liberty The Dutch flying car developer PAL-V International B.V. announced recently that the Liberty, its three-wheel gyrocopter, is now for sale, with first deliveries expected by the end of 2018.

The Liberty, which has been in development for more than 15 years and made its first flight in April 2012, features a unique Rotax engine-based dual-propulsion drive train. In drive mode, the propeller tucks into the rear of the vehicle and the rotors fold and store on top. The company says the Liberty can reach 100 mph on the ground and can be switched between driving mode and flying mode in a matter of 5 to 10 minutes. Once in flight mode, pilots must take off from an airstrip or airfield, not the road, in accordance with regulations. The Liberty has a takeoff roll of 590 feet and a maximum operating altitude of 11,480 feet. The standard Liberty Sport model starts at $399,000. The Pioneer Edition, which comes with added options and is limited to 90 vehicles, costs $599,000. Both come with introductory training lessons and power heating, according to PAL-V’s website. Using a new planning/briefing tool can be a little intimidating, particularly when you are unfamiliar with modern “tablet” devices; but with a few key pointers to get you started, you will soon discover the many advantages such systems bring to your flying – whether you use them purely in a pre-flight context, or in the cockpit for in-flight navigation as well. much more sensitive than older ones, and you might find that if you press hard on the screen, the device registers that touch as a little “swipe” rather than the intended “press”; practicing with the interface while on the ground will highlight the circumstances where you get unintended results. You might find that you get better results from “resting” your finger on the screen instead of “pressing”. Consider mounting your tablet in such a way that you have something to rest your wrist on to increase stability in turbulent conditions and thus improve precision of touchscreen presses. As you plan and execute more and more flights with SkyDemon, you will find your confidence growing stronger. You will have gotten to grips with the basics, but there is always more to discover and new ways to use even the most basic functions. With SkyDemon it is trivially easy to make a good plan, but why not make a few backup plans as well? There are a great many apps out there, but in this piece I will focus entirely on SkyDemon, arguably the best-developed for European VFR. Before I begin though, one piece of advice which holds firm regardless of what product you choose is:
Moving onwards, once you have got a feel for the various functions in SkyDemon, and understood which ones you will find most useful for your personal flying, the next thing will be to adjust the various planning and navigation options to further customise the app. “Planning Options” govern all the various warnings and minima for the planning phase, which are the triggers for warnings to appear in the “Flight Details” tab that I mentioned earlier; take some time to make sure that your warnings are set appropriately for your needs – a helicopter pilot might want to set the “minimum safe altitude” to be a bit more forgiving, for example.
PLAY WITH IT BEFORE RELYING ON IT. All systems have unique methods to access functions, despite their similarity of purpose; being aware of the methods your system uses means that, particularly at times of high workload, you are reaching for the right button rather than wondering where the right button is. With SkyDemon there has been a lot of work done, not only to make the interface context sensitive (ie, you only see buttons and options that are relevant and useful) , but also tactile and fun to use. A great piece of advice is to sit down with it and create routes that you may never fly, but would be a challenge to plan. Touch on an airfield to get started, and then touch on subsequent map points to draw a simple route to begin with. Once a route is plotted, you can open the “Flight Details” tab on the right, which will show a list of potential airspace /terrain/etc which conflict with your route. You can then use a finger drag to adjust your route, and watch as the conflict list adjusts itself; you will also note that you can perform this so-called “Rubber-banding” action in the vertical profile of your route at the bottom of the screen. In this way you can make small adjustments and gradually refine your route after seeing the results of each change. Once you have made a satisfactory plan, one extremely useful thing you can do in SkyDemon is to simulate a flight with it. This will flip SkyDemon into “Go Flying” mode, but the aircraft will move without GPS data and attempt to fly the planned route. Just sit and observe the warnings and notifications that you can expect to see when you actually fly that route; you can also move the aircraft with your finger and simulate situations that you might expect to find yourself in. While this is running, you can practice finding information from the various tabs and menus, and familiarise yourself with functions that you might reach for when you fly for real. For example, it is possible to press and hold on the map to select a point, and then quickly draw a route-line to that point direct, but you could alternatively press and hold on the SkyDemon orb, which is a shortcut to the direct to menu and will give a list of nearby airfields. Both methods are for routing direct, but are each more useful in different, specific circumstances – instinctively knowing which one to reach for will come after spending some time playing with the simulator. It is also worth spending a little time thinking about how you physically interact with your tablet. Modern touchscreens are
Some pilots might decide to be warned about literally everything in the planning phase, but to not have certain types of airspace generate warnings in the navigation phase, or to perhaps “suppress all warnings when flying planned course”, which is an extra option in the “Navigation Options”. It is definitely worth spending some time making sure that these options are set optimally for you, and once you have confirmed that, you can save those settings so that you don’t have to go through the whole process again when installing SkyDemon on a new device. There is plenty more to discover, so dive in and see how SkyDemon can make your flying easier and more fun. You can make great use of the satellite view, so that you can give yourself an idea of what the ground beneath you will look like at your planned turning points – this can be achieved by press-and-holding on the desired map point, selecting that point from the “What’s Here?” menu, and choosing “Satellite Map”. In the case of airfields that form part of your route, you can choose “Explore” from the “Airfields” tab which will overlay circuit diagrams and noise abatement areas on the satellite image – extremely useful for unfamiliar airfields.

What’s Important about Trust Registrations? Not every aircraft owner wants their aircraft registered in their home country, notes Dave Higdon. For those seeking an alternative registration – specifically, a US ‘N’-number – putting the airplane into an aircraft trust can offer financial, maintenance & tax benefits. wners and operators in more than 127 countries understand the benefits of a US registration through Aircraft Guaranty Corporation (ACG), a legally qualified provider of aircraft trusts for more than 28 years. AGC specializes in aircraft trusts and registering the aircraft on behalf of those seeking the N-number registration. Aircraft trusts are legal agreements in which a qualified trustee owns an aircraft on behalf of an actual owner. The trustee acts on behalf of the actual owner (beneficiary), but it's the trustee's name on the aircraft title and registration. Indeed, aircraft trusts help keep AGC owner Debbie Mercer-Erwin busy working with trust agents in more than a dozen countries while providing parallel benefits of being ‘a one-stop shop’ for transactions and registrations through Wright Brothers Aircraft Title (WBAT), the company she started 15 years ago. WBAT and AGC are co-located at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma where the FAA maintains the US aircraft and airmen registries. Mercer-Erwin acquired AGC two years ago, upgrading the company's services and technologies to streamline the processes for clients of both companies. And that’s particularly useful for those who need the expertise of both.

Trusteeship: No Simple Avenue
The hard truth is that many companies offering trust services are not legally authorized to do so, Mercer-Erwin explained. The FAA doesn't vet entities applying for registration as a Trustee. By law, Corporate Trustees must gain their authority from either a state banking commission or by a court in the company’s state of incorporation – and, those trust powers must be granted in their Articles of Incorporation. Because the FAA doesn't require verifiable state governmentissued proof of this authority, many companies with the words ‘Trust’ or ‘Trustee’ in their name register aircraft in trust without the legal authority to perform that service. To protect the integrity of the Trust, Mercer-Erwin says owners should insist on documentation of the would-be Trustee's legal authority.
Aircraft Guaranty Learning New Tricks
Aircraft Guaranty provides US and International clients with ownership entities and structures that can help solve non-citizen issues, allowing foreign entities to register their aircraft with the FAA.
Since entering this business AGC has registered more than 2,000 aircraft for clients from more than 160 different countries. Although she only acquired AGC in 2015, Mercer-Erwin has worked hard to give ACG the technology she used to build Wright Brothers into a major player; and Mercer-Erwin has upped the game for both since she purchased AGC. “The transition has gone really well,” she tells GA Buyer Europe. “With Wright Brothers being in OKC and AGC in Texas, it made it all a smooth transaction. Now we've consolidated the two staffs here in Oklahoma City, which helped us become a one-stop shop. Having everything in one room has been a great advantage.” She also elevated the use of technology for both companies. “Another good thing is that we use the web-based service DocuSign more frequently – thanks to the FAA changing how it recognizes documents. With DocuSign we no longer need to wait on document shipments, making it a smoother, cleaner, quicker process.”
Reasons Vary, Benefits Are Many...
While not widely used in the US, registrations in Trust are a valued solution coveted by many an International operator or owner. Whether for corporate entities or individuals, the reason for registering aircraft in trust varies widely. For some it’s the more favorable maintenance requirements and simplified registration process of the US. For others, Trust registration provides a higher degree of anonymity. Still others gain tax benefits available under certain circumstances. “It varies some for everyone,” Mercer-Erwin explains. Regardless of the underlying logic, registering an aircraft in trust requires a more knowledgeable approach than the simple form the FAA requires of US citizens. “The steps vary somewhat according to the country involved,” Mercer-Erwin offers. Through the process developed by the company, once an aircraft is registered in trust with AGC it becomes the title holder of an aircraft. That means AGC receives all communication from the FAA regarding airplanes registered in trust with them. The beneficiary retains control and, upon liquidation of the trust, title and registration. “We take that responsibility very seriously, and will comply with current FAA guidelines for re-registering your aircraft, maintaining title, and notifying you of any pressing issues that might arise,” Mercer-Erwin assures. “We worry about maintaining your title so you don’t have to.”
Moving Up and On...
When time comes to sell that trust-registered aircraft, AGC and WBAT are on-hand to ease the transition. AGC can help owners navigate the various options for entities who have registered their title in trust. One option involves simply changing the beneficiary of the trust, rather than transferring title to a new entity, for example. AGC works on that change with existing and new owners. For sales involving a new owner Wright Brothers Aircraft Title's escrow and title services include lien and document searches to ensure a clear title. And Mercer-Erwin stressed the importance of using services like WBAT, regardless of the aircraft’s value. “We have a client who bought an aircraft in Europe but didn't do a title search or use escrow,” she illustrates. “In working on the trust the buyer wanted, we performed a title search and learned that he had an airplane with an outstanding mechanics lien on it, and a court order mandating payment. The owner is obligated to pay the lien but isn't going to. So we can't do a trust on it because of that lien. “That's why it's important to do a title search, and why using escrow is important,” Mercer-Erwin stressed. And therein is a key lesson for anyone buying any size aircraft from anywhere in the world. I

A Pioneer in Western France The EASA has issued new regulations this year that permit the commercial use of single-engine turboprop aircraft in instrument meteorological conditions (SET-IMC or SETOps). This change raises hopes to expand both business and commercial aviation in Europe by allowing to serve city pairs that are currently connected only by ground transportation. The European operator – VOLDIRECT – has obtained approval from its national authority to operate commercial flights with the Pilatus PC-12 under instrument flight rules (IFR) already more than a year ago. Until now, business travellers in France, a country known for its centralistic structures, in most cases had no choice but to organise their air travel according to the motto “all routes run via Paris”. Passengers living in the peripheral regions of what is Europe’s third largest economy will certainly be familiar with the phenomenon. Recognising the problem, two entrepreneurs from Brittany, Frédéric Caussarieu and Jean Paul Legendre, saw an opportunity to develop a new business model and set up the “VOLDIRECT” airline in 2009. The company currently operates two aircraft flying direct routes from western France to destinations across Europe. The flagship of the fleet is the PC-12 NG flying under the call sign F-HOLI.
Positive Development in Europe In a first phase, VOLDIRECT flights were only available to staff at seven companies in the region. In December 2015, however, the French aviation authorities approved VOLDIRECT to operate its PC-12 NG on a commercial basis. As a result, flights are now available to all passengers without restriction. Against payment, anyone who wants to can enjoy fast and comfortable travel across Europe aboard F-HOLI.
Pilatus provided assistance to VOLDIRECT with its efforts in this direction by for example developing a new system to provide oxygen masks which are automatically presented to passengers in the event of an emergency. In the standard PC-12, the masks are stowed in the side panels. This meant VOLDIRECT was subject to a restriction on its commercial PC-12 operations: instead of approval up to altitudes of 30,000 feet, the flight was limited to a maximum of 25,000 feet. The French authorities would not cancel this restriction until the emergency oxygen masks were reconfigured to drop automatically from the ceiling in front of the passenger – as is the norm in today’s commercial airliners.

The proposal has then finally been approved by the European Commission and the member states earlier this year. In that changed regulatory context, the Pilatus PC-12 NG opens up new perspectives for European operators. Due to its short-field capability, the PC-12 can operate from runways that twin turboprops cannot, allowing access to more destinations – 1,300 airfields available in Europe. The low operating cost of the PC-12 is another strong argument. Outside Europe the PC-12 NG has been authorized to operate commercially for many years and has found popularity in a number of roles executive transport, cargo, air ambulance.
Development of a new Passenger Oxygen Mask System Pioneers such as Hendell Aviation, a Finnish PC-12 operator, and VOLDIRECT, who have succeeded in negotiating an exemption from the European rules with their national aviation authorities, have been of enormous help in driving things forward.
The path to official approval was a rocky one, requiring a great deal of hard work. Until recently, and in contrast to the rest of the world, commercial flights operated by single engine aircraft were not permitted at night or in weather requiring flight under instrument rules (IMC = instrument meteorological conditions) – even though there were no longer any technically plausible reasons to support such a stance. Happily, things have moved forward in the recent past. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has agreed in principle to the change in June 2016 and

The newly developed option can now be ordered ex works for new aircraft, and also for retrofitting in earlier PC-12. Pilatus has already equipped two aircraft, including F-HOLI, with the new system.
VOLDIRECT Climbing High And so VOLDIRECT flights have become available to everyone. In addition to ferrying business travellers around Europe during the week, F-HOLI is also often used for private travel at the weekend. The convenience of being able to fly direct to their destination naturally holds great appeal for customers and VOLDIRECT has become a much appreciated partner to many businesses and residents in Brittany and more generally in West of France. Frédéric Caussarieu comments that VOLDIRECT was originally set up to operate out of Rennes, serving clients based in Brittany. Having identified buoyant demand for their successful niche product – direct commercial flights with their PC-12 – the two entrepreneurs now hope to take their offering to other regions across France.

Rani Singh spoke to George Antoniadis, CEO, PlaneSense to discover more about how the Pilatus PC-12 ticks multiple boxes for a diverse client base… When George Antoniadis launched his PlaneSense fractional ownership company in 1995, he wanted to address a gap in the market left by the other fractional programs that were predominantly focussed on Mid-Size and larger jets at the time. Antoniadis was looking to provide a more cost effective aircraft option to his clientele. Fractional Ownership is an innovative way for companies and individuals to enjoy the benefits of Business Aviation without the downside of high costs and asset management. Indeed, PlaneSense trains its own pilots, does its own maintenance, and manages its flight operations. It controls its whole chain of operation. Being able to buy only as much aircraft as needed is attractive to a lot of people, helping reduce the cost of entry into Business Aviation. An eighth or a sixteenth is the smallest fraction that you can buy, and it reduces the acquisition, fixed and hourly cost. “You’re getting the most cost effective solution,” says Antoniadis.
THE VERSATILITY OF THE PC-12
Focussed primarily on North America, PlaneSense is active in the eastern two thirds of the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Bahamas and Bermuda. When it began operations, it was looking for an aircraft that it could be confident would handle the rigours of 1,000 hours operations each year. “The Pilatus PC-12 single-engine turboprop had just been certified in 1994,” Antoniadis recalls. “We decided shortly thereafter to use the PC-12 as a platform for the PlaneSense program. “We bought our first PC-12 (which happened to be the 20th one built) and, using it as a demonstrator, started to take on clients in 1996. We picked the PC-12 because it was newly certified and had all the latest in technology within the turboprop arena.” Pilatus’ PC-12 is an attractive aircraft because it offers ability for its owners to land on short runways, thereby increasing the number of destinations available (whether international airports or grass strips). “We note among our clientele that within the US, parents sometimes use their fractional ownership shares to travel with their children looking at colleges. That can be a very arduous thing,” Antoniadis highlights.
PILATUS’ PC-24 WILL JOIN THE FLEET THIS YEAR
“The launch order is for six, with many more to follow. For the interim, we have a fleet of Nextant 400XTi jets which were integrated into our fleet in order to develop all our jet procedures, training and know-how. “Having accomplished that, we’re now offering flights in those airplanes for our clients or for new clients. The 400XTi will support the Pilatus PC-24 fleet until we can bring that up the required fleet number, then we’ll retire the 400XTis.”
MIXED MISSIONS, SAME OUTCOME
“One of our clients told us that the PC-12 made their search for the perfect university so easy because the airplane could get to all of the remote places where the colleges were located. The owner was able to fly back and forth on a trip that would have taken several days to drive.” In addition, the PC-12 offered segment-leading cabin dimensions and the largest door in its class. Measuring roughly five feet by five feet, the door size makes it easy to load a wide variety of luggage and cargo. “Another of our fractional owners performed his daughter’s wedding, and found the PC-12 particularly useful in getting his guests to the location and then carefully transporting all the gifts back,” Antoniadis continues.
PLANESENSE JET PROGRAM
It’s because of its focus to care for the needs of its clients that PlaneSense decided to offer shares in jet ownership. Unsurprisingly after its success with the PC-12, Antoniadis turned to Pilatus again, and specifically the revolutionary PC-24 that will be certified later this year to become the first in the light jet class to have a very large cabin and large cargo door. With its advanced technology, it provides excellent and efficient flying performance, all while having the ability to use very short runways. “We are the largest launch customer for the PC-24. We expect to receive the first one later this year - the very first one sold.

During 2016, PlaneSense completed 36,000 flights to over 750 different airports. “Some of our clients already own their own business aircraft, but use PlaneSense as an additional resource,” Antoniadis explains. “Our aircraft are also valuable to our customers when, for example, they have a larger team that is required to go out to multiple locations on business trips. The mix of mission requirements for our aircraft is truly diverse – but the outcome is the same; efficient travel that simply couldn’t be achieved without the use of a private airplane. “Only recently, a huge snowstorm hit the north east of the United States, and while over 3,000 flights were cancelled as a result, one client was thankful for their share in one of our airplanes which enabled them to get in and out of less congested airports and beat the storm. “People can bypass busy airports if there’s a smaller one close to where they’re going. GAMA Hails long-awaited Acceptance of Single-Engine Commercial Aeroplane Operations in Europe Brussels—The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) today welcomed the European Union (EU)’s acceptance of Commercial Air Transport (CAT) operations using Single-Engine Turbine aeroplanes at night or in Instrument Meteorological Conditions (SET-IMC) in Europe. The operations take effect today with publication in the EU’s Official Journal. The publication of these rules opens up new markets and stands to improve connectivity across the continent. Marking the end of a 20-year effort by industry and regulators, Europe is now aligned with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) standards for CAT operations. “The EU’s acceptance of CAT operations has been a long-awaited moment for general aviation,” GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce said. “We are very pleased to see Europe joining other regions in permitting this important form of transport.” The new regulation is based on rigorous safety analysis, and contains all of the necessary safeguards to facilitate this form of passenger transport. Exhaust Valve Sticking – What’s the @!*)&% deal? In Part 1 of this article, I introduced exhaust valve sticking, the exhaust valve environment and the idea of “Hot Side” valve deposits. To explain how and why these “Hot Side” deposits form, we have to turn to the research on the chemistry of leaded fuel combustion, much of which was done 50-60 years ago.

If combustion temperatures are low enough that lead bromide cannot form in the allotted time, we end up with lead oxy-bromide condensing on the exhaust valve stems. This combined with reduced exhaust valve temperatures is a perfect recipe for valve sticking.
Exhaust Valve Temperatures
Figures 5 and 6 show a valve that stuck in a Continental IO-550. Notice the large build-up of deposits on the lower part of the stem before the tulip flare. Above this shoulder is the part of the valve stem that enters the guide. Note the staining on this part of the stem because the deposits are scraped off the stem by the tight fit of the guide. At some point, enough deposit is forced into the guide and the reduced clearance sticks the valve.

100LL avgas contains approximately 2 grams or tetraethyl lead (TEL) per gallon. TEL increases the octane of the fuel. And it does this very well. During compression, TEL is rapidly converted to lead oxide, which is actually the active octane booster. However, it was quickly observed that lead oxide coated the spark plugs and they stopped functioning, something not welcomed in an airplane. Thru trial and error, it was discovered that when ethylene dibromide is added to the leaded fuel, the spark plugs remain much cleaner. An exact amount of ethylene dibromide is added to the fuel to convert all the lead oxide to lead bromide. Not enough, and you get lead fouling of the plugs. Too much, and you form hydrobromic acid, which dissolves aluminum. Above 1100˚F, lead bromide is a gas, while lead oxide just coats everything as a solid. This difference is where the term “lead scavenger” comes from. The “scavenged” lead can exit the engine as part of the exhaust gas.

Solving the puzzle The ideal process proceeds thusly. The tetraethyl lead forms lead oxide, the active octane booster, during the compression stroke and previous combustion cycles. During combustion, the lead oxide reacts with ethylene dibromide to form lead bromide that exits out the tail pipe with the exhaust gas. Unfortunately, the process is not that simple. In actuality, tetraethyl lead quickly forms lead oxide, which then more “slowly” reacts with ethylene dibromide to form lead oxy-bromide in a series of 8 steps. The lead oxy-bromide eventually reacts fully to form lead bromide, which, as a gas at these temperatures, goes out the exhaust pipe. Chemical reactions are much faster at higher temperatures. It is the time it takes for this “lead oxy-bromide” to form lead bromide that creates the problem. And this time is intensely dependent on the peak combustion temperature. And guess what? You as pilot in command, can strongly influence the peak combustion temperature. Explained more fully, if we look at the condensation temperatures of the lead compounds involved, a picture starts to emerge. The condensation temperature is the temperature below which a compound precipitates from the hot exhaust gas and collects on a surface, which in this case is the valve stem. Condensation is the opposite of evaporation and can be considered the “dew point” of a chemical compound.

Figure 3 shows the relative operating temperatures for sodium filled exhaust valves (Lycoming) versus the solid exhaust valves (Continental). Exhaust valves run very hot and have to dissipate a lot heat quickly or they will fail. The solid valve in Continentals dissipates most (81%) of its excess heat from the valve edge to the valve seat when the valve is closed. The remaining excess heat (19%) is transferred from the stem through the guide into the cylinder head. In Lycoming valves, the sodium sealed in the stem, liquefies and transfers heat a lot better than a solid valve stem. This leads to 50% of the heat being transferred from the valve edge to the valve seat when the valve is closed. The other 50% of the heat energy is transferred up the valve stem to the guide. This means there is more heat throughout the valve stem and guide.

Chemical analysis shows this deposit primarily consists of lead, carbon, bromine, and oxygen. We exposed a sample to high temperature in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The sample was heated to 1470°F where, surprisingly, only 25% of the mass evaporated after 25 minutes. This means that one of the hottest parts of the valve had lead oxy-bromide deposits condensing/ crystalizing on it. In summary, lower combustion temperatures don’t permit this conversion of lead oxy-bromide to lead bromide and the valves run cool enough to allow this lead oxy bromide to form on the stem and this leads to (Hot Side) valve sticking. Running either too LOP or ROP lowers peak combustion temperatures enough to cause this deposit problem. The low combustion temperatures are reflected in lower cylinder head and valve temperatures. Low combustion temperatures reduces both the conversion of lead oxy-bromide to lead bromide and the exhaust valve temperature, which allows the lead oxybromide to crystalize on it. I will complete this story in part 3.

The approximate condensation/evaporation temperatures for these materials of interest are as follows: Lead oxide – 1630°F (888°C) Lead oxy-bromide – Initially 1470°F (800 °C) decreasing to 1300°F (705 °C) after 8 temperature dependent steps Lead bromide – 1100-1175°F (593-635°C) As you can see, there is a big difference in the condensation /evaporation temperatures of these compounds – and as it turns out, the substantial time element involved in the process is very important. The time necessary to complete these reactions is VERY dependent on combustion temperatures , of which mixture setting is a primary factor. Combustion temperature is reflected in both the Cylinder Head Temperature (CHT) and directionally, the exhaust valve temperature, which we do not measure directly. (Exhaust valve temperature follows cylinder head temperature because the valve guide is located in the cylinder head, to which it transfers heat from the valve.) Valve temperatures do not follow Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT).

Figure 4 shows lead oxy-bromide build-up in a Lycoming engine. The valve was stuck. This normally aspirated engine was run deeply LOP with CHTs well below 300´ F. The deposit crept up to within a quarter of an inch of the other (cool) side of the guide.
It is the mixture and, to a lesser extent, throttle, rpm, ambient temperature and cooling airflow that affords us some control of the actual combustion temperatures and thereby the CHTs and valve temperatures.

Lufthansa Technik and MTU Plan Joint Venture Lufthansa Technik and MTU Aero Engines are planning to set up a joint venture company for the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of geared turbofan (GTF) engines, with each of the partners holding a 50-percent stake. Aircraft Comparative Analysis Bell 407 v Airbus H125 (formerly the AS350B-3e)
In this Aircraft Comparative Analysis, Mike Chase provides information on a pair of popular single turbine helicopters for the purpose of valuing the Bell 407.
Over the following paragraphs, we’ll analyse the performance of the Bell 407 and Airbus H125 (formerly the Eurocopter AS350B-3e) to see how they compare within the market. We’ll consider productivity parameters (Payload, Range, Speed and Cabin Size), and give consideration to the current market values. All told, there are 1,060 wholly-owned Bell 407 rotorcraft operating globally and an additional six that are in shared ownership (giving a total in-operation fleet of 1,066). Furthermore, 9.8% (105) of the Bell 407 fleet is leased. The fleet percentage currently ‘For Sale’ is 4.7%, with 30% of those aircraft under an exclusive broker agreement. The average days on the market before a Bell 407 sells is currently 531 days, according to JETNET. By continent, North America holds the largest fleet percentage (68%), followed by Asia (9%) and South America (7%) to give a combined total of 84%. Payload & Range A potential operator should focus on payload capability as a key factor. The Bell 407 ‘Available Payload with Maximum Fuel’ (1,142 lbs) is more than that offered by the Airbus H125 (987 lbs), per Conklin & deDecker. Meanwhile fuel usage of each aircraft (as sourced from Aircraft Cost Calculator) shows is almost no difference between the fuel usage of the Bell 407 (43.2 Gallons Per Hour) and the Airbus H125 at 42.3 GPH.

nationwide average Jet-A fuel cost used from the August 2016 edition of B/CA was $4.90 per gallon at press time, so for the sake of comparison we’ll chart the numbers as published. Note: Fuel price used from this source does not represent an average price for the year. The ‘Total Variable Cost’ defined as the Cost of Fuel Expense, Maintenance Labor Expense, Scheduled Parts Expense and Miscellaneous Trip Expense for the Bell 407 computes at $608 per hour, which is $25 higher than the Airbus H125 ($583 per hour). Aircraft Comparisons Table A (below) contains the new prices from Vref Pricing Guide for each helicopter. The average speed, cabin volume and maximum payload values are from Conklin & de Decker, while the number of aircraft in-operation and percentage ‘For Sale’ are as reported by JETNET. The Bell 407 has 4.7% of its fleet currently ‘For Sale’, and the Airbus H125 has 2.8% ‘For Sale’. The average number of pre-owned transactions (sold) per month for the Bell 407 is six units per month compared to the Airbus H125’s ten.

Productivity Comparisons While some may choose different parameters, serious helicopter buyers are usually impressed with Price, Range, Speed and Cabin Size. After consideration of the Price, Range, Speed and Cabin Size, we can conclude that the Bell 407 displays a high level of productivity. The Bell 407 shows a higher retail price but greater productivity compared to the Airbus H125. The Airbus H125 has a lower variable operating cost and slightly longer range advantage, but the Bell 407 offers a larger cabin volume and a greater ‘Payload with Full Fuel’ capability. The used Bell 407 shows good monthly full retail sale transactions averaging six units per month, and is still a very popular model on the used helicopter sales market today. Operators should weigh their mission requirements precisely when picking which option is the best for them. Range Comparison The Bell 407’s maximum VFR range of 281nm is slightly less than that of the Airbus H125 (300nm), according Conklin & de Decker. The Bell 407 is powered by a single Rolls-Royce turbine 250-C47B engine offering 813 shp, while the Airbus H125 is powered by a single Turbomeca turbine Arriel engine with 847 shp. (The transmission rating is a limiting factor in the total rated and usable engine power output.) As a matter of interest, using design and engineering licensed from Bell Helicopter, Eagle Copters, Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta has developed a dual-channel FADEC Honeywell HTS900 engine retrofit called the Eagle 407HP. This offers more power, better fuel efficiency and lower operating costs than the standard Rolls-Royce 250-C47B engine. SIKORSKY S-76D VIP HELICOPTER RECEIVES EXPANDED EASA CERTIFICATION The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has completed a second phase of validations for new capabilities and expanded performance of the Sikorsky S-76D helicopter. The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Air Show and Sikorsky expects to make its first delivery to a European VIP customer by the end of this year. The newly validated capabilities focus on cabin comfort and cockpit architecture. The Silencer® wall panel system is approved for the eight-passenger deluxe VIP/executive interior for improved cabin acoustics, along with C4 air conditioning to provide advanced climate control.

Leonardo AW609 in Icing Tests The AW609 TiltRotor programme is expected to start icing trials soon following recent ground and flight testing activities. These advances have been made in support of FAA certification, which remains on track for 2018. The third prototype, based at Leonardo’s facility in Philadelphia, performed several weeks of unrestrained ground testing and, more recently, flight trials that allowed avionics and all systems to be fully tested. During initial flights, the aircraft performed basic hovering and manoeuvring and patterns around the airport, concluding with hover landing. Additional flights up to altitudes of 4000 feet with short takeoff and landing (STOL) are planned shortly. The aircraft will undergo icing trials in Marquette, Michigan, through the winter. The tests will ensure the AW609 can fly in known icing conditions and reach operational standards not currently available in any other commercial aircraft. LifePort, a Sikorsky company, has received FAA airworthiness certification for its Patient Loading Utility System (PLUS) for Pilatus PC-12/47 and PC-12/47E aircraft. The STC includes an incubator configuration with a utility sled, oxygen shroud and mounting plates for an incubator dual composite oxygen bottle configuration to reduce weight and increase capacity.
