Gama’s long association with the Scottish Ambulance Service and NHS Scotland which commenced in 1993 was today furthered with the announcement that it will continue to provide an integrated Air Ambulance Service to the people of Scotland into the next decade.

Two Eurocopter EC135T2 helicopters based at Glasgow and Inverness, are to be replaced by two new made-to-order EC145T2 helicopters when the new aircraft are available in 2014. This will allow clinicians more room to treat patients in flight whilst also giving improved range. Light at the End of the EASA Tunnel The French-led working group that aims to create a new world of light-touch regulation for European general aviation has produced a set of guiding principles for EASA which was being considered by the Agency's Board of Management following their June meeting. GA's place in the Single European Sky The second edition of Europe's Air Traffic Management Master Plan has been released for consultation, and IAOPA is disappointed that it does not go far enough in taking the needs of general aviation into account. The Master Plan - a milestone on the road to the Single European Sky - focuses largely on the airlines, while GA is addressed as an afterthought. The risk is that GA aircraft will be forced to pay for expensive on-board equipment which will benefit only the airlines. South of England Restricted Zones

The United Kingdom has imposed prohibited and restricted zones in the south of England to cover the Olympic Games from July 15 to August 15, and the Paralympic Games from August 16 to September 12. The zones will be patrolled by military aircraft with orders to shoot down any unauthorised intruders. Arrangements have been made to ensure that as far as possible, general aviation can continue to operate during the Games, and it should be possible for anyone who wishes to fly into England for the Olympics or for any other reason to do so unhindered.

A special military air traffic control system has been established to cover the area, and only aircraft whose flight plans have been accepted by this system – known as 'Atlas Control' – will be allowed entry. You will have to carry a working Mode C or Mode S transponder and will have to stick to your agreed route and, within reason, to your timings. In addition, more than 40 airfields around London have been taken into the slot allocation system, so you cannot turn up at most of them without a landing slot. The restrictions are, in fact, less onerous than those which covered the Games in Vancouver and Athens and the football World Cup in South Africa.

Dutch CAA Swoop on Law-abiding Pilots The Dutch CAA and police have mounted a second day of surprise inspections of pilots ready for departure at four major airfields in the Netherlands, and once again had little to show for their efforts. Ary Stigter of AOPA Netherlands reports that the CAA ran a similar exercise last year, when some small infringements were noted. This time, they

came up with even less. CAA staff checked all preflight planning, including weight and balance calculations, fuel management and navigation planning, up to date charts, alcohol abuse, and NOTAM and weather briefing. They also inspected all documents and equipment. Only one problem was reported a foreign aircraft was not carrying the current ELT, which is mandatory for border-crossing traffic. This resulted in an official warning for the pilot, without penalty or obligation of immediate adjustment.

Permits Now Valid in Channel Islands The Channel Islands, which are effectively self-governing British dependencies off the coast of France, have moved to make life easier for flying visitors in aircraft which do not have ICAO Certificates of Airworthiness. EASA Certifies First Three Light Aircraft Under New Rules European regulators have certified three aircraft under a newly created category that is similar to the light sport aircraft (LSA) category used in the United States. The European Aviation Safety Agency announced June 4 that the Czech Sport Aircraft PS-28 Cruiser, the Flight Design CTLS-ELA, and the Evektor SportStar RTC are the first three models certified for European use under the new category. Other aircraft are expected to follow, and EASA is working to further refine the certification requirements imposed.

ASTM Standard and Europe General Aviation Manufacturers Association Director of Engineering and Manufacturing Greg Bowles said the new regulation creates a European certification standard similar in many respects to the ASTM standard applied in the United States, with a

On June 18, the RIMOWA JU52 began its journey in Leverkusen near Cologne, Germany and will make the flight over the Atlantic, across North America and back again. It is, since 1937, the first JU52 eligible for passenger transportation to master this distance. The RIMOWA JU52 will spend several weeks under way – stopping at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, among other destinations. After more than 30 years, this event marks the first time that visitors can marvel at a German original JU52, also approved for commercial air-passenger transport services in Europe. Bronco Demo Team (BDT) are very pleased to announce that our third OV-10 Bronco, the former German 99+18, has successfully completed its maiden flight on Saturday 26th of May at Schwenningen-am-Neckar Airfield in Germany. The Bronco had been on static display at the International Aviation Museum - Manfred Pflumm since 1991. Over the past 12 months a group of dedicated Bronco enthusiasts under the leadership of Tony De Bruyn, expended a lot of work in order to make the aircraft airworthy again. The aircraft received detailed inspections, repairs as necessary, overhauled engines and propellers. When the restoration work was finished with engine runs performed, the UK CAA inspected the aircraft in detail and a ferry permit was subsequently issued under it’s new G-ONAA registration. On Monday 29th of May Bronco 99+18 started it’s ferry flight to the UK via Wevelgem airport in Belgium. The farewell flight was attended by a large party of Bronco Demo Team members, who waved Tony off together with museum owners Margot and Manfred Pflumm and many Schwenningen-amNeckar airfield residents.  Bronco Demo Team information and news can

TEMPEST Introduces AT5K Spark Plug Resistance Tester High internal resistance in aviation spark plugs is rapidly becoming a concern that many pilots and mechanics are beginning to recognize as a source of rough running engines and chronic magneto related problems. Realizing that a growing number of maintenance facilities and pilot / owners are incorporating a spark plug resistance check as part of their preventive maintenance, Tempest felt it would be beneficial to make it as easy and efficient as possible to conduct such a test. Therefore, Tempest is pleased to introduce its AT5K resistance tester. The Tempest AT5K resistance tester is a very efficient and effect means to test the internal resistance in all aviation spark plugs. Simply place the spark plug, barrel side down, over the contact post and touch the other lead end to the firing end of the center electrode. If the light is green, the spark plug resistance is below 4kΩ (thousand ohms). If both the green and red lights are on, then the plug is between 4-5kΩ. This is acceptable for serviceable plugs. If only the red light is on, this indicates a resistance value in excess of 5kΩ and the plug should be discarded and replaced. SANDIA’s New Transponder - Panel Mounted STX 165 panel mounted Mode C transponder Sandia Aerospace announces the FAA TSO certification and immediate deliveries of it STX 165 panel mounted Mode C transponder. The STX 165 has a built-in TSO’d encoder that greatly reduces installation cost and complexity. The STX 165 measures slightly over 6” behind the panel and uses a ½ 3ATI panel cut out. This is the same form factor that is found in corporate jets and airliners and along with the bright OLED display adds to the STX165’s profession look. The STX 165 has three timer functions. An Elapsed Flight Time that lets the pilot know how long he has been airborne, a resettable Count Up timer can be used for timing legs of a holding pattern or for use in fuel management and a Count Down timer that is ideal for timing approaches. The STX 165 displays the built-in encoder’s pressure altitude and with the addition of Sandia Aerospace’s STP 76 optional OAT probe will display OAT, Density Altitude and an Icing alert. Avionics are sensitive, not to mention expensive, equipment that are designed to make piloting safer. When something goes wrong it can often lead to the unexpected chain of events that can reduce levels of safety. Bombardier shares rise on NetJets deal Challenger 300 in Demand

Last month, just over one year after the largest business aircraft sale in its history, Bombardier surpassed the record, announcing a firm order from NetJets for 100 Challenger business jets with options for an additional 175 aircraft. Bombardier also announced a long term aftermarket support agreement with NetJets. The transaction for the firm aircraft order is valued at approximately US$2.6 billion based on 2012 list prices. If all the options are exercised, the total value of the order is approximately US$7.3 billion (also based on 2012 list prices). The aftermarket agreement is for a term of up to 15 years. Assuming certain aircraft usage projections and a 15-year term per firm aircraft, it is valued at up to US$820 million. Bombardier forecasts $648B for business aircraft by 2031 Bombardier Aerospace released its latest forecast, saying that 24,000 business-jet deliveries will take place from 2012 to 2031. On the occasion of CBAA 2012, Canada’s leading event for business aviation, several prominent national Business Aviation Associations and their international representative body, IBAC, gathered to review their joint positions on the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Fabio Gamba, CEO of the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), set out the European perspective, emphasizing that he shared the audience’s frustration over the scheme’s many flaws. These shortcomings include the discriminatory treatment of business aviation, not only in the distinction made in the Directive between commercial and noncommercial operators and how the de minimis rule is applied, but also in the system’s cost ineffectiveness and its focus on punishing CO2 emitters instead of encouraging their efforts dedicated to improving the industry’s carbon footprint. As for the scheme itself, Gamba stressed that its timing couldn’t be worse and should have at least been coordinated with EU Member States – several of which continue to tax aviation also for environmentally-based reasons. “There’s no denying that aviation emissions will grow over time despite the sector’s constant technological and operational improvements and its formal longterm commitment to reducing the impact of aviation on the environment. And although business aviation emits less than 2% of air transport emissions – and less than .04% of total man made emissions - we confirm our sector's role in helping to combat global warming,” Gamba said. “Indeed we have already called for and recognised the role of interim global market-based measures to foster the fulfilment of our three long-term targets, namely 1) carbon-neutral growth by 2020, 2) improvement in fuel efficiency of an average 2% /year until 2020, 3) an absolute reduction of 50% (based on 2005) of our CO2 emissions. However, we believe the time has now come to define what these measures should be.”

Don Spruston, Director General of IBAC, also cautioned that resistance to the EU ETS could lead to retaliation which would harm all parties. “We understand the frustration that unilateralism and badly-crafted legislation can generate,” he added, “but we also note, importantly, that the European Commission has agreed to abandon its scheme if and when a global agreement on an aviation climate change program is sealed. This is an opportunity we want to seize.” He therefore called upon the international business aviation community to rally behind the worldwide aviation effort to develop an alternate, global, market-based measure to the EU ETS. Sam Barone, President & CEO of CBAA, noted: “We need to devote our resources to finding an international agreement that has the full support of the

industry worldwide. Today various international bodies are already reflecting on how best to achieve it. We commend their efforts, but we must take a more active role in their work.” EBAA and their colleague business aviation associations, working with IBAC, are therefore calling for the development of such a global agreement under the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Barone concluded that the EU ETS had triggered discussions at a global level which should provide a much needed push to reach a global solution under ICAO. “We certainly don’t support the EU ETS for all the reasons mentioned above. And we will join our colleagues inpushing for a fairer, international, market-based measure that helps accommodate our ambitious environmental goals in the short- to mid-term. Indeed, we warmly welcome the constructive debate generated at our 2012 Convention and are delighted to offer further facilitation from our offices in the home country of ICAO.”

Because about 3,000 extra business aircraft flights are expected to head for southeast England during the Olympics, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority, airspace capacity is going to be saturated.

France-based Heli Air Design (HAD) have announced the completion of the maiden flight of their HAD 1-T “Helineo” light helicopter. In a press release on 12 June, the company revealed that the first flight took place on 26 April. Despite the poor weather conditions at MetzNancy Lorraine airport, Lignier was able to take the turbine-powered two seat helicopter through a series of take-offs and landings before carrying hover-taxi manoeuvres in ground-effect.

EUROCOPTER X3 Arrives in the USA Eurocopter say the aircraft will visit five, currently undisclosed locations to showcase its high speed and vertical flight characteristics. Scotland’s state-run NHS paid Scottish Air Ambulance service has signed a new contract with incumbent operator Gama Aviation to provide Eurocopter EC145T2s from 2014, it has been announced.

Scottish Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: “The Scottish Ambulance Service Air Ambulance is the only publicly funded air ambulance service in the UK and this £120 million contract will deliver a world class, future proof service that has been specifically designed to benefit patients throughout Scotland”.

At the end of May, Eurocopter has announced that the EC135 simulator, operated by Eurocopter’s Training Academy in Germany, has obtained Full Flight Simulator (FFS) Level B certification from the German Aviation Administration.

According to Eurocopter, the simulator provides a multitude of training possibilities to international customers and is the first EC135 FFS in Europe to obtain this certification.
