New SWIRL-3 Propeller Unveilled At DUC Hangar Party DUC Hélices celebrated the inauguration of its new facility on the Villefranche-Tarare (LFHV) airfield, and used the occasion to present its latest SWIRL-3-L propeller. More than 50 aircraft flew in to the day-long event which was also attended by aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, pilots and friends. In total more than 500 aviation lovers gathered in a festive and friendly atmosphere together with many elected representatives as DUC’s aircraft hangar was transformed into an incredible party venue with a DJ and light effects worthy of the greatest nightclubs. Outdoors, guests could enjoy the aero PhotoBooth and captive balloon flights. Later guests were treated to a buffet dinner from a renowned caterer of the region with wines exclusively from local producers. It was an opportunity to share the gustatory richness of the Beaujolais. Later in the night, the guests enjoyed the “Flair” cocktail, a fine blend of Ginger, St Germain and Chambord liqueur concocted by the DUC Cocktail Maker. Finally, the guests were surprised by the DUC team's Flashmob of ‘Happy’ by Pharell Williams which signalled the start of dancing that went on late into the night.

Prior to unveiling its SWIRL-3-L propeller, DUC allowed the suspense to build throughout the evening by shrouding it beneath an elegant black drape, and it was only at the end of the evening that it was revealed to the public.

SWIRL-3 Family Complete The SWIRL-3-L completes the new SWIRL-3 family. The version "L" is equipped with a new very compact hub, adapted to a standard assembly on a Rotax motor. Thanks to this hub, the SWIRL-3-L threebladed propeller has a very low mass of 3.7kg and makes it possible to integrate very easily on aircraft with very sharp noses. Cones of Ø210mm are now compatible with the assembly. In addition, the SWIRL-3 is the first propeller entirely designed by simulation, before being validated by bench and flight tests. Its creation was achieved through the following steps: • Mechanical CAD design in SolidWorks; • Aerodynamic analysis of the helix by CFD calculation under ANSYS; • Evaluation of the acoustic impression of this helix in operation; • Finite elements calculations of its composite structure to control and optimize its vibratory behaviour. Today, this propeller is at the cutting edge of innovation and performance, meeting the market’s high expectations. Despite its better finishes and enhanced quality, the price of the SWIRL-3-L threebladed propeller is €1,499 (before tax). The SWIRL-3 family is also composed of the SWIRLBLACK-3, variable-pitch version in flight, adapted to fast aircraft and allowing them a high take-off performance and superior speed performance. Weighing less than 8.5kg completely installed, the SWIRLBLACK-3 can be purchased for €6,968 (before tax).

At the beginning of powered flight, the propellers used by the Wright Brothers were made from natural materials such as wood and were less efficient than the propellers of today, asserts Hartzell Propeller.

But it was not only materials that changed in that time as a change in design took place during the 1940s which saw a move to wide rectangular blades from the previously used round tip design (necessitated by increases in engine power).

Today pilots can choose a two-blade design, six-blades, or more, depending on the aircraft and its use, while new materials such as composites combined with more efficient designs help make propellers up to 90% efficient for today’s aviators.

Early propeller designs were about 82% efficient, compared to 90% efficiency enjoyed by pilots today. This increase has been achieved through improvements in both materials and production techniques in the intervening years. This change has seen materials change from wood to aluminium/ aluminium alloy and the latest composites today. However, one of the biggest changes to both propeller materials and design came during the interwar years when revolutions in structural engineering – especially as it related to the creation of lightweight metals – took place.

These alloys may also contain other elements such as copper, manganese, magnesium, silicon, and/or chromium to increase strength and durability. These developments promted Hartzell to introduce its own aluminium

IAOPA sees a bottleneck in avionics-stores, which will not allow to meet the deadline for a full-fleet equipage by December 31, 2017. It is deemed that this prolongation would be largely harmless because the frequency scarcity that was feared a few years ago has materialized only in a weaker form. At a recent Eurocontrol meeting it was made clear that most of the European Air Navigation Service Providers will also not be able to meet the deadline. ■

Airforms Earns EASA Approval For Caravan Nose Gear Airforms has obtained EASA STC approval for a procedure that provides repairs to worn Nose Gear Torque Links and Nose Gear Shock Struts, and replacement of their attaching parts with FAA PMA approved oversize components. This STC has previously been approved by the FAA (STC # SA02469AK). Highlights of the EASA STC include: • Substantial cost savings over the life of the aircraft; • Oversized FAA PMA’d pins and bolts available in .010, .020 and .030 oversizes; • Standard sized pins and bolts also available; • Precision machined pins and bolts are Cad plated for long life; • Tool kits available with piloted reamers for all three oversizes. ■

EU Rescue And Firefighting Regs Trouble For GA

Airports which fall under the EU regulation are currently in the process of adapting their procedures to new EU regulation, and the consequences in a number of countries are proving to be problematic for GA. One of the problems is with the rescue and firefighting requirements which stipulate airports provide full rescue and firefighting services for even small GA aircraft to operate. IAOPA brought up the issue at a recent meeting at the EASA GA Sectorial Committee where the national aviation authorities could take part. The problem was recognised by several authorities and there was general agreement that this new obstacle to GA fits poorly with the principles of the GA roadmap. ■

EU Parliament’s GA Friendly Resolution The European Parliament has given General Aviation its biggest boost in modern times with the adoption of a resolution which guides the EC and member states to adopt a raft of principles which would preserve, foster and promote GA across Europe. Resolution 2008/2134(INI) sets out the importance of keeping legislation in proportion, recognising the differences between CAT and GA in setting fees and charges, ensuring that GA has access to airports and airspace and accepting that GA has a vital role to play in Europe's transport infrastructure. The resolution, adopted by a huge margin - 524 votes in favour, 74 against and six abstentions - now forms the basis of the European Commission's approach to General Aviation. The Commission is in turn the boss of EASA, which will find it very difficult to ignore the new landscape for GA. In addition, national AOPAs can now use it in negotiations with their own CAAs to ensure that GA is treated fairly.

Daher Salutes First TBM 930 Simulator

The first TBM 930 simulator - a high-fidelity Flight Training Device (FTD) - has just been certified by the US FAA, enabling its service entry next month in courses at Floridabased SIMCOM Aviation Training, which is Daher’s US training partner.

New STC For Garmin G5 HSI

This FTD reproduces the exact cockpit environment of Daher’s latest TBM 930. The device was built by Frasca International Inc. using a cabin provided by Daher for installation at SIMCOM's Lee Vista Training Centre in Florida.

Garmin’s G5 solid-state attitude indicator has sold in large numbers since its release earlier this year, and the company recently added another piece of the panel puzzle having earned STC approval for its directional gyro / horizontal situational display primary nav instrument version of the G5.

Albania Joins Free Route Airspace

Flights will now be routed via published entry and exit points of Albania using the most direct route, with a possibility of being routed via intermediate way points. This gives operators significant fuel and CO2 emission savings. By the end of 2019, most European airspace is expected to have implemented FRA, with all airspace having operating as FRA by 2021/2022. Meet the new V1.0; Certified single-engine aircraft by Vulcanair. A glass cockpit four seater single engine aircraft. Built tough, the V1.0 favours metal versus expendable plastic materials. Fantastic news is spreading in the aviation world about an aircraft that will revolutionize the four-seat, flight-training and owner-flown, entry-level markets. There are already major buys confirmed to bring this aircraft into the flight-training market. This aircraft does not have spectacular performance specs. It is not faster than a speeding bullet or have 200 pounds more useful load than other aircraft in its competitive set. What it does have is a price that’s significantly lower. Meet the Vulcanair V1.0, with a price of ($250,000) F.A.F. Naples or $259,000 delivered in the US (subject to change). This is not an aircraft that has been stripped of features it has a full IFR avionics package featuring the Garmin G500 PFD/MFD. It is EASA-certified, with FAA certification expected later this year. Deliveries have begun in Europe, and those in Asia are scheduled for the near future. US deliveries are expected before the end of the year. The order book is filling rapidly, with the next delivery dates slated to be in December 2017. This V1.0 has enormous potential in Europe as a lower-cost, but high-value, contender in the aero club and flight-training markets, as well as a very capable glider-towing aircraft. In the US, the V1.0 will be that entry-level aircraft that everyone is looking for. Further, it’s positioned as the aircraft that Part 141 flight schools, colleges and universities with aviation programs need to economically train tens of thousands of professional pilots. The conditions in the US market demand that there be an answer to fill the need for an aircraft at the V1.0 price. Right now, to find a similarly equipped aircraft with comparable features under $260,000, one would need to consider 10-year-old options, of which there are very few available, many requiring an imminent engine overhaul. The V1.0 was designed and is being manufactured by Vulcanair, a well-known and highly regarded European aircraft manufacturer. Vulcanair has produced more than 500 EASA and FAA-certified, single and twin engine, piston- and turbine-powered

aircraft with many millions of flight hours. The company has been financially stable since its inception in 1996. FULL SUITE OF FEATURES Rugged, designed and manufactured by the producer of the robust, multi-role P68 twinengine aircraft, the V1.0 is built tough to hold up for decades in aero club and flight school environments, with high utilization by low-time pilots.

The standard avionics package features a Garmin G500, simultaneous PDF/MFD in a split screen coupled with a state-of-the-art GTN650 WAAS GPS/Nav/Comm touchscreen-enabled unit a GMA350 Audio Panel, a GTX33 Mode S Transponder, one GNC255 Nav/Comm, one GDU620 AHRS, Jeppesen NavData and a JPI digital enginemonitoring system. Mid Continent's latest digital back-up digital instrument (SAM) is offered standard in the aircraft package. ADSB-In and Out, for the US version, is also included. Additional avionics options are available.

The aircraft cabin is extremely functional with four seats and three passenger doors, two for the front seats and one for the rear seats, and a separate luggage door and compartment with a capacity of 88lbs. The engine starts very easily. The legendary dependable, and some would say, bulletproof, Lycoming 180hp engine powers the aircraft. During takeoff, the aircraft has quick acceleration, and rotation seems instantaneous at 65 KIAS. Using best rateof-climb speed (Vy) of 80 KIAS, the aircraft climbs at over 900 f/m.

The V1.0’s structure is a combination of welded steel tubes arranged in an articulate reticular fashion (main cabin) coupled with a riveted aluminum wing, tailcone and empennage sections. This arrangement ensures a strong protective cabin and a lightweight structure altogether. The V1.0 is also one of the easiest aircraft in the market to maintain and repair. It’s in line with Vulcanair's design philosophy: the quest for durability, safety and exceptional value. Value is a fundamental goal. Excellent aircraft performance, modern Garmin avionics and an exceptionally low acquisition cost in its competitive set make the V1.0 a serious alternative in today’s single-engine piston-aircraft market.

SMOOTH FLYING The pilot of a V1.0 will approach the aircraft with a smile; it is as if the aircraft smiles back with the slight grin defined by the shape of its engine cowling ducts. The aircraft stands tall on its wheels. A person slightly over six feet can comfortably go around the aircraft and under the wing for preflight.

The high wing configuration provides excellent visibility, and one feels comfortable in this classic looking aircraft. The speed is amazing for such a design, and the aircraft easily meets or exceeds the published cruise speed of 130 KTAS @75% using 11 USG/hr. This is due to the compact wingspan. In turn, it is nearly impossible to stall the aircraft inadvertently.

The pilot climbs easily into the aircraft, thanks to a tubular step near the door. The composite doors close firmly with a solid sound. Both the pilot and passengers will love the solid look of the cabin.

The V1.0 is powered by the 180hp Lycoming IO-360-M1A, capable of running with AvGas or with lower-cost alternative fuels.

Lufthansa Aviation Training Buys 25 Cirrus SR20s

Trainee pilots at Lufthansa Aviation Training's US base will be learning to fly in new Cirrus SR20 aircraft in after a multimillion Euro deal between the two companies was announced last month.

French Pilot Completes Flying Car Challenge Frenchman Bruno Vezzoli set off at 8am local time from an abandoned wartime runway in Ambleteuse, a town located on the French northern coastline between Calais and Boulogne-sur-Mer in his ‘Flying Car’, Pegasus. Because most of the flight was over the English Channel, the car was equipped with sea survival equipment as a safety

precaution. Fortunately this was not needed and the craft landed successfully 37 miles away from its starting point in East Studdal near Dover. In order to complete a take-off Pegasus requires around 100 metres ground run and just 30m to land. As some will know, European Union (EU) aircraft importations have been the basis of an ongoing discussion at EU level for a long time now. After the changes made to the end-use exemptions (customs duty) and the introduction of the new EU Customs Code, the discussion has been centred on a lessee’s right to reclaim the import VAT imposed in connection with aircraft importation. AOPA UK General Aviation Report (GAR) Online Service now works on all devices. If you are flying to/from the UK, AOPA UK has extended sponsorship to provide a free basic service, provided for the online submission of General Aviation Reports, when required for flights to/from the UK, which will now work on all devices and browsers. The free service can be used for Private flights in single-engined piston aircraft. It can be accessed through www.onlinegar.com by taking the “Free AOPA” option. If you do not qualify for the free service you can subscribe to other services provided by OnlineGAR Ltd, or other preferred service provider. You can still submit a GAR to the UK authorities, free of charge, by email. Details can be found on the UK Border Force website. Flights from the EU into the UK (excluding Channel Islands, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man) require a GAR to be submitted a minimum of four hours prior to your estimated time of arrival in the UK. No GAR is required outbound from the UK to EU countries (excluding Channel Islands, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man) but you may be required to submit an equivalent notice for your country of arrival. Longer notice periods, and both outbound and inbound GAR, are required for non EU destinations, Channel Islands, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man.

Denmark

Denmark doesn’t have anything similar to the UK GAR or the Dutch GENDEC. A flightplan is all that is required for international flights. However, Danish airports are still classified as approved for either national, intra-Schengen

Netherlands The Netherlands does not require a GENDEC for flights from the EU/Schengen area, but does require one when you arrive from outside Schengen (see www.gendec.nl)

Iceland Civil aircraft flying to or departing from Iceland should make their first landing/final departure from an international aerodrome. Designated international aerodromes are: Keflavik Airport, Reykjavik Airport, Egilsstadir Airport, and Akureyri Airport. From outside Schengen a flight plan is required and the PIC should notify whether the airplane is transporting an individual who is under arrest or committed to prison or detained in any other manner. Exempted from this are airplanes holding an AOC for commercial air transport operation issued by a Schengen state. No prior permission is required for private flights operated into, in transit over, or from Icelandic territory with aircraft registered in states which are parties to the Chicago convention. The information in the flightplan must be received by the authorities two hours in advance of arrival and the landing must be carried out at a previously designated international airport.

Sweden

Sweden does not have any requirement for GAR or any other obligation to inform about flights to and from Sweden. The usual flight plan is of course necessary and on certain private airfields, a PPR. The first new product since the relocation of experimental aircraft pioneer Lancair International is the four-place MAKO, scheduled to make its first appearance at this summer's EAA AirVenture event July 24-30. Focused on setting a new price/performance benchmark, the new design features dual gullwing cabin doors, a first for a Lancair model. Newly designed low-drag "scimitar" wingtips incorporate lightweight LED lighting and, along with other aerodynamic refinements including an optional retractable nosewheel, are expected to add some 8 to 10 knots to the aircraft's cruise speed.

In another first, the aircraft’s spacious four-place cabin will feature enhanced control options. Optimizing airflow around and through the engine is essential to MAKO’s performance goals. The engine cowling features an improved precision induction system and redesigned exhaust fairings with improved aerodynamics. A variety of engine options will be available, ranging from the standard 210hp Continental IO-360 to a 350hp turbocharged Lycoming TIO-580. Typical non-turbo cruise speeds will be in the 215 knot range, with the turbocharged models exceeding 250 knots. Whether normally aspirated or turbocharged, MAKO is designed to go head-to-head with contemporary certified aircraft like the Cessna TTx, Cirrus SR-20 and SR-22. With its optimized aerodynamics, weight and power, MAKO is projected to easily outperform both aircraft in climb rate, range and useful load. As of this writing, pricing is still being finalized but count on it being substantially lower than TTX/SR-20/22 pricing, likely in the neighborhood of 50% or more. Full-scale Mako production is anticipated in Q1 of 2018 and advance deposits for production positions are being taken now.

SUPPORT FOR OVER 2,200 LANCAIR OWNERS WORLDWIDE Existing Lancair kit and aircraft owners around the globe can look forward to full support for new and replacement parts, technical assistance and support documentation. While still unpacking file cabinets and organizing equipment, the company has already begun offering a variety of aircraft services from the new location. Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), inspections and avionics support services are available for both experimental and certificated aircraft, including piston and turbine-powered planes. Drawing on an experienced local aviation workforce, the Uvalde airport location also features on-site paint and interior refurbishment, making it a true “one-stop shop” for regional owners and operators of private aircraft. Lancair’s new CEO, Mark Huffstutler observes, “We’ve already seen a groundswell of interest and we’re looking forward to some exciting announcements in the months to come. Pilatus Hands Over 1,500th PC-12 to the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia As part of a big celebration at it’s headquarters in Stans today, Pilatus handed over the 1,500th PC-12 to its loyal customer of many years, the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS). May’s flight activity in Europe resumed the growth trend following a blip in April. According to WINGX, there were 77,068 business aircraft departures in Europe during May, a 3.3% increase from a year ago and the busiest month so far this year… The growth in Business Aviation activity was evident mainly in the largest markets of France, Germany and the UK. Activity growth from the UK was particularly notable, with London's Light Jet departures growing 10% YoY, notes WINGX Advance managing director Richard Koe. Growth during May was strongest among business jet flights, which climbed 4% YoY. Business turboprop and piston flights also increased, but specifics were not given. Flights arriving into Europe increased from all regions except North Africa. Arrivals from Russia were up 3%, in contrast to a -6% decline in the last 12 months. Departures from Europe to North America were up 8%, and flights to Asia-Pacific increased 18% from a year ago. Also noted were “modest growth” at Paris Le Bourget and Geneva, with strong YoY gains at London Luton (+6%); Farnborough (+15%); and London Biggin Hill and Stuttgart (+18% each). Stratos Flight Testing Moves Up a Notch… Stratos Aircraft received clearance to move into the next phase of the flighttesting program for its Stratos 714 single-engine personal jet after the FAA removed initial flight limitations, including distance restrictions… After years in development, the Stratos 714 first flew on November 30 last year and has since logged 42 hours and 33 flights, reaching speeds of 320 ktas and an altitude of 17,000 feet. The aircraft, powered by an embedded Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5, is set for upholstery and painting shortly. Stratos has not yet begun taking deposits on the aircraft, saying it is waiting until it is nearer to certification. But the company is “recording expressions of interest”. A flight model of the newest Ka-62 helicopter made its first flight at the flighttest centre of Progress Arsenyev Aviation Company, a Russian Helicopters subsidiary, part of State Corporation Rostec in May. After completing all updates during ground races and hovering flights, the Ka-62 flight model made a 15-minute orbit flight at the speed of 110 kph as specified in the test program. The Ka-62 helicopter is designed for passenger transportation, offshore work, urgent medical aid, search-and-rescue operations and transportation of cargo in its cabin or sling-loaded, patrolling and ecological monitoring. Diamond Aircraft Together With PIDSO Developed An All-New Antenna Solution Two Austrian high-tech companies, the aircraft manufacturer Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH and PIDSO-Propagation Ideas and Solutions GmbH, producer of antennas, jointly developed a brand-new antenna solution. For the first time reception of S-band and C-band frequencies has been combined in just one antenna, whereas until now two antennas were needed. Diamond Aircraft was in the need for such an antenna solution for its special mission aircraft DA42 MPP and DA62 MPP and found the perfect partner in PIDSO. UK based Specialist Aviation Services is pleased to announce the delivery of its first three AW169 air ambulances. The much anticipated delivery comes after a lengthy certification process for the company’s new and highly innovative medical interior. The delivery took place in a combined ceremony at the company’s Gloucestershire Airport base when the aircraft were handed over to Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance, Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance and Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. The aircraft are equipped with individually customised and fully adaptable medical interior layouts all under the same STC with each customer benefitting from a spacious, bright cabin, easy loading and all round patient access. The aircraft also features APU mode to enable on-scene ground power without rotors turning as well as the superior performance and modern safety features which the AW169 offers. Extra Lifting Capacity For H145 The optional increase of the Alternate Gross Weight (AGW) allows H145 operators to take off with up to 100kg more useful load. It brings additional benefit especially for law enforcement, para-public or military missions offering the possibility to carry for example more fuel, mission equipment or passengers. The AGW of 3,800kg is linked to a temporary restricted flight envelope until 100kg of fuel are consumed after approximately 20 minutes. It requires a logging of AGW times with a slight impact on Direct Maintenance Costs. The AGW does not apply to Category A flights where performance with one engine inoperative is relevant. COMPANY PROFILE

Airtask Group through it’s trading Company Directflight Limited, was established in 1983 and specialises in delivering bespoke flying tasks. We hold two Air Operator’s Certificates, one for Commercial Air Transport and one Public Transport with additional tasks also carried out under EASA Part SPO. We currently operate eleven aircraft, ranging from the BAE 146301 Atmospheric Research Aircraft G-LUXE through to a Diamond DA42. All of our operations can be termed ‘special mission’ due to either the tasks themselves or the natural environments in which we fly. Airtask are based at Cranfield Airport about 40 miles north of London. We have fourteen staff at head office and we employ a further forty staff around the UK. Our regular flights are predominantly in and around Scottish waters but we also venture off around the world carrying out a range of other work.

temperatures, humidity, windspeed and direction. Much of the data is processed whilst airborne and forwarded to the Met Office to help with weather forecasting. G-LUXE is the original BAe 146 built in 1981. It is flown by highly experienced pilots and also carries a cabin crew member. The flying can be extremely demanding with tasks being carried out anywhere between 30,000 feet and 50 feet above sea level. Airtask work closely with FAAM and Avalon Aero Engineering Ltd to ensure the aircraft is in perfect condition for these very demanding tasks.

Airborne Atmospheric Research

Fishery Patrols

You may recall the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic ash disruption in 2010. The National Atmospheric Research Council (NERC) aircraft G-LUXE, operated by Airtask contributed greatly to the reopening of the airspace across the Atlantic Ocean and NW Europe. The aircraft is owned by NERC and managed by the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurement (FAAM) based at Cranfield Airport. FAAM is the result of a collaboration between the Met Office(TM) and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and has been established as part of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) to provide an aircraft measurement platform for use by all the UK atmospheric research community on campaigns throughout the world. The modified BAe 146-301 large Atmospheric Research Aircraft (the ARA) is owned by the Natural Environment Research Council and, via a support contract with BAE Systems, operated for them by Airtask. The aircraft can fly in many different types of configurations including: • Radiative transfer studies in clear and cloudy air • Tropospheric chemistry measurements • Cloud physics and dynamic studies • Dynamics of mesoscale weather systems • Boundary layer and turbulence studies • Remote sensing: verification of ground based instruments • Satellite ground truth: radiometric measurements & winds • Satellite instrument test-bed Flying Campaigns are managed by FAAM working closely with the Airtask Operational Team who are embedded in a new purpose built facility where all flying is planned and co-ordinated. The Campaigns can be commissioned by worldwide research Universities and Agencies, with some projects taking three to five years from the planning stage to execution and evaluation of the data. Recent projects have included studying monsoon weather in India, the effects of clouds in the polar regions and Saharan desert dust deposits across the globe. This August the aircraft is planned to travel to the Ascension Islands to study the atmosphere between there and West Africa. The aircraft can carry up to 100 scientific instruments internally with 18 scientists monitoring their own individual equipment. Externally approximately 40 instruments are used to gather information, these include probes beneath the wings to measure physical properties of the clouds, light sensors, a microwave radiometer, upward and downward facing cameras and lidar capabilities. The aircraft can also drop ‘dropsondes’ through the atmosphere to take measurements of atmospheric pressure,

DA42 Operations

Airtask also acquired a Diamond DA42 in 2016. This aircraft is currently being used in conjunction with 3SDL to support British Army training in Kenya. The aircraft provides information to ground troops during their training phases. The aircraft is also used to carry out flight calibration services at airports throughout the world, Latvia and Netherlands being the most recent tasks. A crew of two will fly pre-determined profiles testing and calibrating a range of airport navigation equipment.

Inter Island Air Services

Airtask commenced fisheries patrols in 1991, at that time on behalf of the Scottish Fisheries Protection Agency, and from 1998 for the Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food. We have now amassed over 30,000 maritime patrol flying hours working for a number of UK Governmental Agencies on fisheries, environmental and enforcement patrols. Airtask continues to operate the Reims Cessna F406 maritime patrol aircraft to this day, with four specially modified aircraft on the fleet, two owned by the Scottish Government based in Inverness and two owned by the group based at Cranfield. The two Inverness based aircraft patrol the Scottish fishing areas both responding to intelligence and proactively seeking out fishing vessels that are infringing fishing legislation. The Cranfield based aircraft fly under a Framework Agreement with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO). Under the Framework flights can be requested by a number of UK Agencies including Borders Agency and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in addition to the MMO. The crews, also based at Inverness and Cranfield, are highly trained and dedicated to the task. Patrols can take them over 200 miles offshore, flying from a number of regularly utilised airports, sometimes being away from base for several days at a time. All of our Observers have a military background and are highly attuned to detecting activity which requires reporting. As a result of our experience in this area we were approached in 2016 by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office who were seeking assistance to evaluate a number of fishery patrol methods in the British Indian Ocean Territory. For this task our aircraft, aircrew and ground support team were based in Diego Garcia and flew over an eight week period. The trial proved extremely successful and we are very proud to have participated. In flying the aircraft from the UK to Diego Garcia we gathered an exceptional amount of increased data on the aircraft capabilities in addition to the trial flights.

Range Clearance Services The two Cranfield based Cessna F406 aircraft also support the Ministry of Defence with missile firing range clearance duties from Benbecula Island in the Hebrides as part of a long term contract with QinetiQ. Airtask’s role is to provide air cover and to coordinate with other ground and sea based assets searching vast maritime regions, ensuring it is safe to carry out the pre-planned missions in these areas. Reliability and operational planning is crucial on these tasks, not just as regards to safety but also to ensure these very expensive test projects do not get delayed or cancelled. Our highly trained pilots and observers prove their value time and again with rapid decision making and assessment of radar return images.

Airtask operates two inter island air services, these services are provided as Public Service Obligations (PSO) contracts serving primarily the indigenous population of the remote islands whilst also supporting the tourism industry where both services are of great importance to the local sustainability and economy. Both services utilize two Britten Norman BN2B Islander aircraft capable of carrying up to nine passengers. One operation is based at Tingwall Airport in the Shetland Isles, providing scheduled services to Foula, Fair Isle, Out Skerries and Papa Stour and the other at Oban, Argyll and Bute, serving Coll, Collonsay, Tiree and Islay. The bases are managed by permanently assigned Base Managers, customer services staff and pilots supported by local engineering staff also. The pilots are trained to extremely high standards with specific local familiarisation due to the unique characteristics of each of the remote destination airfields in served Islands. As with all of Airtask’s operations, safety is the main priority and the pilots regularly make crucial decisions regarding the hostile weather conditions that exist in these environments. Notwithstanding weather cancellations, Airtask have provided an extremely reliable service. This excellent reliability is based on the whole team pulling together, from pilots looking after the aircraft, skilled engineering and good operational planning. As well as scheduled services, the aircraft are also available for charter flights outside the scheduled timetables. Whilst the Shetland services are operated by Airtask Group, previously under the Directflight branding the Oban services are provided by Hebridean Air Services. Hebridean Air Services were acquired by the Airtask Group in the summer of 2016 and has continued to thrive under the new ownership. The Hebridean team is now fully integrated into the Airtask Group utilising two assigned BN2B aircraft flying routes from Oban on the scheduled service. As can be seen from the profile, Airtask have been successful with a diverse and complex range of operations for many years.
