Enjoy the vastness of nature
and experience flying in its most beautiful form – in an open-cockpit airplane behind a 300 hp radial engine! It would not be an overstatement to place the aircraft in the same class as the automobile classics of the Duesenberg or Cord companies.
Dreams come true
The engine hums away sonorously. It smells like nature, freshly cut grass. The sun is shining in my face and warm air flows around my leather jacket. On my right hand side below me the river meanders, a boat sails on it. The captain waves and I fly a circle around his small sail. I am in the midst of the vast landscape and feel free at last – the freedom to move in the three dimensions. A look to the left – the backdrop of a farm – illuminated by the setting sun. A few propeller revolutions later I land on the meadow next to the farm. A soft touchdown, engine-swith off and the propeller stops after the last idling turns. It’s absolutely quiet – and then the feeling of happiness... Later, around the campfire, we review the day and fine-tune the plan for the following day. New experiences, new emotions over and over again – MY NEW WACO !

time travel to the origin of aviation
In 1935, when the WACO YMF-5 first saw the light in the so-called „golden age of aviation“, it soon became clear that this biplane would rank among the finest of its decade. This assessment has remained true to this day. Only about half a dozen of the original version have survived, mostly in museums. Almost 50 years later, in 1983, the WACO Aircraft Corporation was founded. It has dealt exclusively with the new production of this icon of aviation history from this time on. The idea was a comple te success right from the very beginning! Almost 200 aircraft have been built at WACO Aircraft Corporation since 1983 and individually equipped to customer specifications. A main argument is that owners of a WACO can rely on the advantages of a brand new construction while maintaining the classic look. Of course, the suitability for daily use of the new aircraft compared to the original historical one differs considerably. The maintenance-free corrosion protection of the tubular steel fuselage construction promises a long service life. Currently WACO aircraft fly worldwide and every single customer is proud to call a WACO YMF their own.
the new style is as elegant as always
Since 1983, the aircraft has been handcrafted again in series based on the original construction plans and approvals. Since then, it has been steadily improved. The enlarged cockpit, the larger payload and the extended range ensure even greater comfort. The newly built WACO YMF-5 is one of the most exclusive aircraft of its kind. It possesses a unique combination of craftsmanship, quality, performance and design.
cockpit design: As a standard, all cockpits are equipped with ADS-B In & Out; pictured above, a version with maximum equipment, including autopilot and IFR-certified.
We design the cockpit together with you according to your needs – whether you prefer classic VFR instrumentation or a state-of-the-art IFR glass cockpit. About half of our customers love mechanical round instruments – the other 50 % prefer a glass cockpit. Purists as well as technology enthusiasts get their money’s worth – and mixing is possible, of course! Despite an open pilot’s seat, you sit protected from the wind and comfortably in the very spacious cockpit.
The range of applications extends from touring and sports aircraft to commercial passenger transportation, which is possible thanks to full FAA/EASA certification. In addition to its elegant design, this meticulously handcrafted aircraft also represents a valuable investment. Although the aircraft are newly built, they are always recognized and welcomed at classic fly-ins.

The UK All Party Parliamentary Group for General Aviation (APPG-GA) issued a response in late June to the UK Government’s Aviation 2050 Green Paper. It warned that the UK general aviation industry was in danger of “market failure” in coming years and called on the government to be “bold and ambitious” to support its revival.
!!
!
Chair of the APPG-GA, Grant Shapps MP, said, “It is clear that GA is now facing a market failure situation. As more of our airfields disappear under housing developments and more of our common airspace is closed off, the distribution of vital services for aviation across the UK is reaching a critical point. The Government needs to wake up and take bold action now if this situation is to be reversed.” The APPG-GA suggested tougher planning protection for airfields and a complete revamp of the process for managing controlled airspace in the UK, along with an approach to GA that doesn’t lump it together with commercial aviation... GA has completely different needs to commercial air transport. Yet for government, the temptation seems to always be a one size fits all approach,” said Shapps. “This doesn’t work for the light aviation industry which needs to stay low cost and flexible to succeed.” The response also highlighted the importance of GA to the UK economy. The industry supports at least 10,000 jobs and contributes £1.1 billion annually. The APPG-GA believes GA’s value to the economy is actually far greater, being the “grass roots” foundation of country’s commercial air transport sector. www.generalaviationappg.uk
The SESAR Horizon 2020 PODIUM project has carried out further U-space demonstrations at five sites across Denmark, France and the Netherlands from May to mid-July. The five PODIUM sites are Hans Christian Airport, with its temporary reserved airspace for drones and its AFIS service; the Drones Paris Region with its 300 hectares of dedicated drone zone; Rodez-Aveyron airport with its class D CTR; the Netherlands RPAS Test Centre, Marknesse; and Groningen Airport Eelde with its class C CTR. “So far, the initial insights look very promising, examples being the increased efficiency of flight authorisations and safety benefits due to increased situational awareness,” said SESAR Joint Undertaking. The project will also highlight any areas that require further attention. The PODIUM partners aim to deliver a demonstration report by end September, before a dissemination event at Eurocontrol in Brussels on 17th October. The main PODIUM partners are EUROCONTROL, Airbus, Delair, DSNA, Drones Paris Region, Integra Aerial Systems, Naviair, Netherlands Aerospace Centre, Orange and Unifly. Meanwhile in the Gulf of Finland (GOF) U-space demonstration on 14th June, “For the first time ever, general aviation aircraft, drones, and recreational remote-controlled model aircraft safely shared the airspace above and around an operational airfield” in a demo at the East Helsinki Aerodrome in Pyhtää, Finland. www.sesarju.eu/projects/podium

The handover took place at Dekelia Air Base in Tatoi, near Athens, in the presence of the Greek Minister of National Defence, Evangelos Apostolakis, and Italian Ambassador Efisio Luigi Marras. The ceremony was also attended by the Chief of General Staff of Hellenic Civil Engineering, Mayor Christos Christodoulou, Chief of General Staff, Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis PN, the Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant George Blioumis and Walter Da Costa, Tecnam global sales and marketing director. HAF is upgrading the flight-training programme at the Ikarian School, which focuses on initial selection and introduction to flying. The P2002s are replacing T-41D trainers, which HAF has been using since 1969. In addition to the twelve P2002 JF aircraft, Tecnam has provided a SOFTEK simulator and a computer-based integrated training system with ancillary support services.

The Tecnam P2002JF is a two-seat aircraft powered by a single Rotax 912 piston engine. It is equipped with Garmin avionics. Evangelos Apostolakis stated: “Today, we are pleased to see the fruits of a major effort, the implementation of a programme to upgrade the flying training that takes place at the Hellenic Air Force.” The inclusion of the twelve new aircraft with associated ground support and education equipment is a practical and essential step, part of the broader planning of the Armed Forces for all air training.
Walter De Costa, Tecnam global sales and marketing director, said: “On behalf of Tecnam and the Pascale family, we are very proud to be part of the future of HAF, honoured to be contributing to the excellent standard of education and training that HAF is providing. “Today we have completed the delivery of twelve P2002JF’s exactly on schedule and we very much look forward to supporting our friends in Greece for many years to come.” The Hellenic Air Force (HAF) of Greece was formed in 1911 to guard and protect Greek airspace, provide air assistance and support to the Hellenic Army and the Hellenic Navy, as well as the provision of humanitarian aid in Greece and around the world. The Hellenic Air Force includes approximately 33,000 active troops, of whom 11,750 are career officers, 14,000 are professional conscripts, 7,250 are volunteer conscripts and 1,100 are women. The motto of the Hellenic Air Force is the ancient Greek phrase for “Always Dominate the Heights,” and the HAF ensign represents a flying eagle in front of the Hellenic Air Force roundel (above). In 2016 Tecnam delivered eight P2002JF aircraft to the Argentina Air Force. This fleet has amassed a total of over 7,000 hours and performed 16,000 landings to date. https://www.haf.gr/en/
“It is now possible for our future pilots to fly with modern fighters, to ‘spread their wings’, and to train more safely and efficiently. To make a successful jump to the next level of education and have a better transition to modern fleet aircraft. “This is, of course, the culmination of excellent preparation, coordination and cooperation between the Air Force and Tecnam. I would therefore like to express my sincere congratulations on their significant contribution to the overall effort to implement this programme.”

OIG Reports on FAA Registry Update –
What Does it Mean? The Situation
There are changes ahead that will modernize the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) – bringing it up to date with the latest technology and security measures. One of the key updates will be to the registry system, which is vital for ensuring aircraft are legally owned, maintained, and operated. The deadline for the huge overhaul is now October of 2021, which doesn’t seem that far away. The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently issued a 29-page report – “FAA Plans to Modernize Its Outdated Civil Aviation Registry Systems, but Key Decisions and Challenges Remain” – regarding the progress the FAA is making in order to meet the modernization mandate. The OIG delved into what they think the FAA needs in place to complete the required upgrade on time – their report put into question whether it could be accomplished, stating: “The Registry’s systems are outdated, and FAA has yet to develop a detailed plan for modernization.” The FAA’s plans are not the only consideration in the timeframe though, given the Congress factor. Because “the regulations that govern aircraft registration do not reflect current technology or business practices”, modernizing the FAA’s registration system will require rulemaking by Congress, which can take some time.
A Modern System
This is a significant update to the Registry – many provisions were implemented with the Reauthorization Act of 2018 (HR 302) – which Aircraft Guaranty Corporation covered in more depth in Highlights of the 5 Year FAA Reauthorization Act. The new registration system, Civil Aviation Registry Electronic Services (CARES), “is expected to streamline processes, allow for the submission of electronic applications and forms, improve controls, automate registration processes, and improve online data availability” according to the FAA. Its key aims are: •
•
Web-based access to all public data. For the first time in history, the general public will be able to view FAA records online in real time. Currently, what isn’t already electronically maintained is held in the Public Documents Room (PDR) available for those who have access. Any electronic records are only in real time via the computers at the PDR – outside access is limited to information that is updated once daily. The modernization mandate includes digitizing all aircraft registration documents for real-time, public and web-based access, which means phasing out the PDR at the FAA. Furthermore, using the PDR will incur a fee if the business could have been conducted by electronic means as efficiently. Automation of application services (processes and procedures). For the first time in history, the general public will also be able to file any document electronically. Most aircraft registration functions still require paper documents that are manually scanned and reviewed by Registry examiners. Digitizing and automating the registration process means the role of FAA examiners will change, becoming more high-level.
verification of fraudulent or incorrect submissions; additional security controls such as crosschecking information with non-agency entities; the registry structure, including combining aircraft and airmen systems; and matters of data storage with a cloud- or server-based system. How will the FAA fund the new system? It hasn’t been decided yet – funding modernization projects usually comes from its facilities and equipment (F&E) account, but they may be able to use money from its operations and maintenance (O&M) account. This must be decided before it becomes a part of the agency’s budget. What rulemaking via Congress is necessary in order to proceed? The FAA will have to develop a rulemaking that revises current regulation and allows for the electronic registration of aircraft – to improve controls, strengthen requirements, and implement digital signatures and electronic payments – a complete outline of the new system is needed beforehand to know exactly what rules to change
Now What? – The Challenges
The OIG report contained four main recommendations to the FAA. The FAA accepted and outlined a schedule for implementing them: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Develop and implement timeline for making key decisions regarding CARES by May 31, 2019. Define desired capabilities of CARES by Dec 31, 2019 Develop and implement a procedure to obtain industry feedback by Oct 31, 2019. Develop and implement a plan for maintaining real-time access to data by June 30, 2019.
There are challenges to face though, including: the transfer of a huge amount of data (with a lot of outdated/large files) to a new system; meeting the needs of registry users – aircraft title companies, financial institutions, aircraft manufacturers, airmen, other government agencies etc. – to ensure the operation of aircraft worldwide; and addressing workforce issues arising from role changes.
The Transition & After
The OIG has concerns, but if the FAA stays on track with this schedule, they can meet the October 2021 deadline, barring delays with Congressional rulemaking. Updating and modernizing the new system will be a great improvement but will not fully alleviate all the pitfalls in submitting documents, electronically or not. With the extensive rules in place for filing documents, there is a good chance it won’t be done correctly without industry knowledge of FAA rules and regulations. Furthermore, it is paramount to know What to Look for in Owner Trustee Documents to uphold high standards for creating and maintaining the title to the aircraft. It will still be important to hire a company that knows the ins and outs of the FAA system to avoid costly errors that could take time and money to correct.
In Order to Proceed
Ultimately, the changes ahead will modernize the FAA’s registry system, helping to bring the aviation industry up to date in technology and security measures. There is significant work to do, but we’re confident that every entity involved in this important endeavor will fulfill expectations.
What are the new components/upgrades needed in the new system? The FAA is considering: automated approvals for low-risk applications; automated

Detailed estimates of technical and operational requirements for the new system are vital right now – anticipating the rulemaking, cost and schedule that will be necessary to successfully complete the expansive project. Some key questions need to be answered:

Ancient Landforms of the Australian Rainforest Revealed by Airborne LiDAR LiDAR remote sensing technology has been used in many archaeological applications around the world, such as finding Mayan pyramids in Central America and trenches dug during an historic siege of Vienna in Austria. Australia has no pyramids to be discovered, but there are places left where the landforms are all but unknown. LiDAR is ideal to shed light on these areas – literally. One of the most inaccessible areas of this type is the rainforest of the Iron Range on Cape York in Far North Queensland. Not only is it covered by thick rainforest with a very dense canopy, but underneath lies one of Australia’s most rugged areas in terms of hills criss-crossed by thousands of narrow and steep creeks. This makes the landscape rather inaccessible for groundbased research. The Iron Range is also the largest contiguous block of lowland rainforest remaining in Australia. The only human traces in this rainforest are from a short period of a “mini”-goldrush about 100 years ago where miners dug some trenches to look for the precious material. Other features in this landscape include thousands of nesting mounds of Australian megapodes, the orange-footed scrub fowls and the brush turkey, which incubate eggs in large mounds of rotting vegetation. In cooperation with the new privately funded Iron Range Research Station (IRRS), Airborne Research Australia (ARA) used its RIEGL LMS-Q680i-S airborne LiDAR mounted on a motorglider together with a high-resolution aerial camera to map the rainforest in a joint research project. (Aircraft used for this Mission: Diamond Aircraft HK36TTC-ECO).

This project not only aims at mapping the rainforest and the underlaying landforms, but also investigate the structure of the rainforest itself, a very important capability of airborne LiDAR in the context of the overall aims of this scientific study. While the importance and plight of ever-wet rainforest is generally accepted, comparatively little attention has been paid to tropical dry forests - high-biomass, species-rich biomes that thrive in marginal conditions and hold international significance for biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration. These ecosystems are generally poorly represented in the conservation estate and are subject to a variety of threatening processes, the interplay of which is not well understood.
Left: Aerial Photo. Right: LiDAR DTM showing nesting mounds of the orange-footed scrub fowl.
Within Australia, tropical dry forest covers a relatively small area but contributes disproportionately to biodiversity. This ecosystem reaches an apex of complexity and development on Cape York Peninsula, an area internationally recognised for its high diversity and low disturbance status. Closed forests in this region occupy only 5.6% of the Peninsula’s area, but contain 47% of its plant species, 60% of its frogs, 35% of its reptiles, and 40% of its birds and mammals. The data from the airborne LiDAR will be used in conjunction with terrestrial laser scanning with a RIEGL VZ-400i from IRRS, and biomass quantification via automatic extraction of individual trees and estimates of their volumes from terrestrial pointclouds. Plot based diversity surveys have also been carried out. This novel combination of highly detailed airborne and terrestrial laser scanning with diversity data will generate new insights into the complex interplay between topography, fire susceptibility, biomass and diversity within this region, and has national and international implications for the tropical dry rainforest biome and the opportunities it offers as a vehicle for carbon sequestration. In March 2019, Tropical Cyclone “Trevor” caused extensive damage to the rainforest in the Iron Range. As the first LiDAR survey had been flown only 5 months before this event, a re-survey planned for May 2019 will add another dimension to this project by analysing in detail the level of destruction. The very high-resolution data will help to prepare for fire management and also future natural disasters. ARA – Airborne Research Australia is an Independent Not-For-Profit Research Institute supported by the Hackett Foundation, Adelaide. The IRRS – Iron Range Research Station is an initiative of the MAXIM Foundation, Cairns.

Viking Parent Company Resurrects De Havilland of Canada Brand While Airbus and Boeing had less news than usual at the recent Paris Air Show (in mid-June), it was Viking Air Limited's parent company Longview Aviation Capital that had perhaps the biggest news having just resurrected one of the most famous names in aviation, following its acquisition of the Dash 8 turboprop airliner program from Bombardier. Former de Havilland Canada types have now been brought back together with Longview already having successfully revamped the Twin Otter under Viking, as the Series 400. Now Longview has the DHC-1 through -7 as well as the Canadair water bomber Type Certificates, that were also previously held by Bombardier (Canadair), consisting of the CL-215 and CL-415. Viking’s growing presence as an aircraft manufacturer sees Western Canadabased Longview owning the type certificates for all the aircraft DHC originally developed, Bombardier having acquired that business from Boeing in 1992. From a GA perspective this includes the Chipmunk trainer, Beaver, Turbo Beaver, and Otter/Twin Otter utility/transport aircraft; along with the Caribou and Buffalo transport aircraft, and the Dash 7. The company has focused mainly on the Twin Otter over the past 12 years, modernising it for use as a modern small transport aircraft (including a floatplane version) and also developing a special mission variant of the Series 400, the Guardian 400, for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. Viking says the low acquisition cost and flexible architecture of the Guardian 400 allows operators to mix and match sensors and interior layouts to meet specific mission profiles. An example of the Guardian 400 was present at the Paris Air Show ahead of a world tour starting in September. Prior to the Le Bourget show, Viking spent six months modifying a production airframe into the Guardian 400 demonstrator (see previous page 21 for description).

The de Havilland Story
Thousands of de Havilland Canada aircraft remain in active use around the world. The past 75 years has seen around 3,500 aircraft produced, many of which remain in service today.
TIMELINE 1930s
On 5th March 1928 the de Havilland Company (of England) incorporated a subsidiary company in Canada. At the time it was the only aircraft manufacturer in Toronto, producing the Moth aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). The first all-Canadian design to come out of DHC was the Chipmunk, an all-metal trainer developed for the RCAF which helped to establish the company as a leader in the North American aviation industry.
1940s
In the 1930s the advent of the bush plane helped to open up the Canadian wilderness. However, by the mid 1940s it was clear that a more durable design was needed and DHC developed the DHC-2 Beaver. The prototype Beaver made its maiden flight from Downsview (the company’s base airfield near Toronto) in August 1947 and the aircraft proved to be a great success, and was the start of DHC’s reputation for producing highly capable STOL aircraft. The U.S. military became the company’s best customer.
1950s
In 1951 de Havilland started to produce the DHC-3 Otter, which is slightly larger than the Beaver with twice the payload and a greater range.
1960s
The Twin Otter was introduced in 1966 (having made its first flight on 20th May 1965) and although it had been designed as a utility aircraft for the Canadian North, it became popular with growing commuter airlines. More than 800 were built, making it the highest-selling 19-passenger commuter in the world and played a key part in developing the world’s regional airlines.
1970s
In 1973 DHC applied its STOL expertise to designing an airliner, with the four-turboprop Dash 7 becoming an aircraft of choice for airlines operating to smaller airports with challenging terrain. Meanwhile in 1970 Viking Air Limited was established as an aircraft maintenance and repair company at Victoria International Airport in Sidney, British Columbia with a focus on the seaplane and utility aircraft markets.
1980s
In 1983 Viking was selected as the exclusive spare parts manufacturer and distributor for the out-of-production DHC-2 Beaver and DHC-3 Otter utility aircraft. Engineering drawings and tooling transferred from Downsview to Sidney, BC. In 1988 the de Havilland Canada factory delivers its last DHC-6 Twin Otter. The Twin Otter became the largest-selling 19-passenger utility turboprop aircraft in its class with a total of 844 Twin Otters manufactured in Downsview for delivery to customers in 76 countries.
1990s
In 1997 Viking hosted a Golden Anniversary fly-in in Victoria, BC celebrating the 50th anniversary of the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.
2000s
In 2005, Viking purchased the assets of Bombardier's Commercial Service Centre (CSC) including the Product Support and Spare Parts business for the DHC-6 Twin Otter, allowing Viking to work directly with operators for the supply of new parts and technical support. Then, in 2006, Viking acquired the Type Certificates for seven de Havilland legacy aircraft including the DHC-1 Chipmunk, DHC-2 Beaver, DHC-3 Otter, DHC-4 Caribou, DHC-5 Buffalo, and Dash 7. Transfer of the Type Certificates established Viking as the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and provided the company with the exclusive right to re-start production for any of the aircraft. In 2007 Viking launched the new Twin Otter Series 400 production program, modernising the original design and incorporating a Honeywell Primus Apex glass cockpit, advanced materials, such as a modern composite nose section, and more powerful P&WC PT6A-34 turboprop engines.
2010s
On 16th February 2010, the first new-build Twin Otter in 22 years made its maiden flight at Viking’s final assembly plant in Calgary, Alberta. Viking delivered its first Twin Otter Series 400 to launch customers Zimex Aviation in July of that year after receiving Transport Canada Type Certification on 24th June. In 2012 Viking added FAA and Russian IACAR to the growing list of Type Certifications for the Twin Otter Series 400. In 2016 Viking purchases the manufacturing and design rights to the Bombardier CL-415, CL-215 & CL-215T Amphibious Aircraft program. Viking also delivers the 100th Twin Otter Series 400, just six years after the initial flight. In recognition of the Twin Otter’s role in remote locations, the wing ribs of the 100th aircraft were taken to towns in Canada’s North to be signed by residents in communities that helped establish the Twin Otter as a stalwart in Canadian aviation. 2019 Viking's parent company Longview Aviation Capital revives the de Havilland brand as De Havilland of Canada having announced that it was acquiring the Dash 8 programme from Bombardier, thus bringing all former de Havilland types under one umbrella again. Pilatus Class -
Edwin Brenninkmeyer Founder & CEO, Oriens Aviation
Personalised Service for a Fast-Changing Environment
General and business aviation is an often-undervalued commodity. Before becoming fully immersed in the sector professionally, I was heavily involved in my family’s retail business. I would regularly take my Cessna 210 to fly colleagues to prospective sites. The convenience of the aircraft enabled us to visit stores in remote parts of Central Europe, in the most time-efficient manner. My colleagues liked the fact that we always got home at night. Not only was the 210 a terrific time-saving tool, it was complementary to the pressures of family life too. No need for long drives, time-wasting and tiring connecting flights and delayed airline schedules. That Cessna 210 was small, lacked facilities and was very expensive to run; but the late 1970s built piston-engined aircraft was tried and trusted – the forerunner of the modern turboprop singles of today. It also influenced the path we are forging today at Oriens Aviation with our traditional flagship the Pilatus PC-12 and now the PC-24. Our mission is for our customers to ‘Get More out of Life.’ My experience flying the 210 was my own invaluable ‘grass roots’ experience of aircraft maintenance, as a customer. The aircraft was aging and complex and demanded constant maintenance. My own demanding travel schedule conflicted with this and gave me a heightened sense of what is important for customers. At the same time, there is a commercial drive towards scale economies, as MROs consolidate. OEMs are buying up bigger independent MROs, some of whom are themselves getting out of General Aviation altogether, while experienced and long serving MROs are buying up rivals. The challenge is maintaining a high standard to personalised service. The drive to deliver the best in customer service and be a one-stop, go-to base, is fundamental to engendering new and repeat business. Our organisational size and age allows us to set standards and culture for future growth now. We are therefore able to give maintenance inspections complete focus and attention. It also enables us to be flexible and if the customer wants something specific, we make every effort to achieve that, as we are not bound by ‘big company’ processes, put in place to serve a large volume of customers. Each customer is unique, and we try to understand this and cater for it accordingly. We are pleased with how business has been received one year after establishing our Pilatus Service Centre at London Biggin Hill Airport. Customers appreciate we can support them, far beyond handing over the keys to a shiny new aircraft. Our expansion into MRO through the acquisition of Avalon Aero’s Biggin Hill base late in 2017, was timely. There is a swelling critical mass of Pilatus PC-12s in the British Isles – over 30 aircraft now, and growing. Many of these operate from little more than small, general aviation aerodromes in and around the British Isles. We are pleased to be delivering our 12th PC-12 in July to a private customer.
24 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2019
Our MRO team, headed by Stuart Locke, who joined us from TAG Aviation in Farnborough last January, and his team, now look after 20-plus PC-12s. It is a well-known issue that business aviation is being squeezed out of major airports as low-cost carriers and the volumes of passengers (and revenue) they deliver far surpasses the average two to three passengers flying in by business jet. The beauty of the Pilatus PC-12 and PC-24, the Super Versatile Jet is that they do not need the long runways and infrastructure costs associated with large airports. If our aircraft and other types in the category can play a key part in keeping these under-threat small airfields sustainable, then this is a positive thing for aviation as a whole, creating jobs for young people as pilots and engineers, which our industry so desperately needs. At Oriens Aviation we are excited to be plotting our growth as a growing ‘business aviation services’ company. We fly and demo the aircraft for prospective customers; provide MRO and AOG remote support; we offer pilot training at London Biggin Hill in collaboration with Oysterair; and AOC advisory – following the relaxation of EASA rules in 2017. We are proud to be in a niche market – albeit one that is growing. Business Aviation in Europe accounts for just 5% of movements (source - European Business Aviation Association) and single-engine commercial flight and business jet operations to smaller airfields accounts for a small slice of that. But it is a growing market. This is why we are bolstering our engineering support – in readiness to support the PC-24 in the British Isles. Our engineers and technicians will be trained up on the PC-24, and we are adding an experienced instructor/examiner for the type. I am looking forward to flying the PC-24 myself, in due course. We recognise that the majority of existing PC-12 customers are ‘future’ new PC12 and PC-24 customers – who choose to upgrade and stay in the Pilatus family. No surprise that our first customer for the PC-24 in the UK is already a PC-12 operator. Being able to offer a one-stop shop for both aircraft is an important part of our business strategy. Oriens is Latin for ‘rising’ and ‘emerging’ and we are very pleased to be embarking on this journey alongside Pilatus, whose facilities in Stans, Switzerland have doubled in size and continue to grow with the recent re-opening of the Pilatus PC-24 orderbook in May this year. RAISBECK ENGINEERING:
Making Great Airplanes Better Since 1982 The Beechcraft King Air family is the world’s most popular business turboprop—demonstrated by 50+ years of market dominance. Virtually synonymous with that iconic brand is Raisbeck Engineering. Raisbeck’s Performance Systems takes the aircraft to a new level of performance and versatility while enhancing its proven safety, comfort and reliability.
Swept Blade Turbofan Propellers Solomon Plumbing is a national plumbing and heating service company. Owner Danny Allor and his core crew of eight define “frequent business flyers,” shuttling from offices in Michigan and North Carolina to customer locations as distant as Colorado, Texas, New York and Florida. When the company acquired a King Air 350i, Allor took the advice of John Murphy of Murphy Acquisitions and installed Raisbeck’s Composite 5-Blade Swept Propellers. Compared to the 4-blade OEM propellers, the difference, says Allor, “was like night and day. On the first takeoff roll, they threw me right back in my seat! The takeoff was unreal, the braking on landing was unreal, and [the airplane] was quieter, definitely quieter.” Allor loves the comments he hears when people notice the 350i the first time. “[Everyone] notices the difference with the new five-blade propellers. The airplane looks a lot meaner. It’s faster. It’s quieter.” He concludes: “There’s nothing I can buy for that airplane to make it better.” Unlike some general aviation propellers which only appear to be swept, the quarter-chord and both leading and trailing edges of Raisbeck’s propeller blades are swept along the entire length. Sweep allows the propeller diameter to be larger, thereby increasing thrust, without incurring high Mach effects— noise—at the tips. The Swept Props also offer attractive ramp presence. Raisbeck’s Composite 5-Blade and Aluminum 4-Blade Swept Propellers are both currently available for King Air 300s and 350s. Four-blade aluminum Swept Propellers are available for all C90s, E90s and 200 series King Airs, with a five-blade prop for the 200 series expected be certified before the end of 2019. In addition to weight savings, the composite props offer unlimited blade life, since most blade damage can be repaired without affecting the airfoil shape. The aluminum propellers are an even more affordable alternative.
Ram Air Recovery System No pilot wants to have to descend through an ice storm, but it happens. Available for all 200 series King Airs, RARS can be deployed at any time with very little torque loss, enabling the aircraft to power through challenging flight conditions. The Ram Air Recovery System significantly increases climb and cruise performance in both normal and anti-icing modes. Engines operate 18°C cooler at equal torque settings and gain 8% more available horsepower at altitude. With the ice vanes engaged for ground, takeoff and landing operations with minimal torque loss, they help prevent foreign object damage and extend engine life.
Dual Aft Body Strakes Owner of an extensively upgraded C90, Matt Talbert singled out Raisbeck’s Dual Aft Body Strakes as a major contributor to the enjoyment of his King Air. “The Strakes definitely improve the handling, especially at altitude,” Matt comments. “My passengers have remarked on the smoother ride and lower noise levels in the cabin.” Factory-standard on new King Air C90GTx and 350 models, and available for all King Air models, Dual Aft Body Strakes are one of Raisbeck’s most popular products. Replacing the classic single ventral fin under the aft body, the Strakes improve directional stability. In turn, passenger ride quality is improved, as are pilot control and aircraft handling qualities. Since they reduce drag, Strakes also contribute to climb and cruise performance, and reduce Air Minimal Control (Vmca) speeds. 26 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE AUGUST 2019

NEWS ROUNDUP Turboprops Hold Their Values Best, Says Vref
Single-engine turboprops including the PC-12 and Cessna Caravan have remained at “an industry-low depreciation rate,” says the report. This compares to business jets retaining 40-50 percent of their value. Vref CEO Ken Dufour said, “We are still cautiously optimistic about the new deliveries forecasted through 2020 and see no indicators as of yet that the manufacturers will miss their target numbers.” www.vref.com

A decrease in business aviation flight activity across Europe was led by the turboprop fleet, according to the latest data from Argus. The decrease was 16 percent in May on a year-over-year basis with turboprops down 28.6 percent, the main contributor being multi-engine turboprops rather than the popular singles. However overall activity did increase compared to April, up 3.6 percent, with light jets leading the way, but turboprop activity was down 16.7 percent. www.argus.aero

Vincenzo Nicastro, Piaggio Aerospace’s extraordinary receiver.
The Italian government in June awarded Piaggio a series of contracts including purchasing nine new Piaggio P.180 Avanti Evos, along with a contract to upgrade 19 already in the fleet of the Italian Armed Forces. The Italian Defense Ministry confirmed, during a meeting in Rome with the manufacturer present, that the contacts were worth around €700 million and also said it would proceed with the acquisition of at least one P1.HH Hammerhead UAS system — this will consist of two aircraft and one ground station. The confirmation followed the Italian government’s agreement in April on an initial plan to restart production. Piaggio entered receivership late last year and is seeking bids for the sale of the company. “The definition of the operational needs of the Italian armed forces and the availability of the relevant budgets, communicated yesterday by the Italian government in Rome, allows the company to restart,” said Vincenzo Nicastro, extraordinary receiver of Piaggio Aerospace. www.piaggioaerospace.it

KODIAK
Where Luxury Meets Adventure! Hot on the heels of the announcement in June that Daher intends to acquire Quest Aircraft, GA Buyer Europe provides a profile of Quest and its popular Kodiak single-engine turboprop. Quest Aircraft Company is an American aircraft manufacturing company dedicated to providing access to more people and more places by building the Kodiak 100 Series II: a highly rugged and reliable STOL single-engine turboprop. The Kodiak combines superior short-field performance with high useful load making it an ideal choice for a wide variety of applications. The ten-seat aircraft is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6-34 turbine engine producing 750 shaft hp (559 kW). It received its type certificate on 30 May 2007 and its production certificate on 15 September 2009. The Kodiak has made considerable advances during the past decade, thanks to a consistent outflow of upgrades and enhancements to each new model year. The mission of the aircraft has evolved as well. Originally designed to be the ultimate humanitarian workhouse, the unique combination of robust construction and remarkable payload capability has resulted in many additional applications for the Kodiak, including float (amphibious and straight) operations, special missions, medevac, skydive and more. The owner-flown segment continues to gain momentum as well, particularly in the North American marketplace. A wide range of options are available such as an external cargo compartment, TKS ice protection, Stormscope, weather radar, TCAS and even a ‘jump’ skydive package. Customers can choose their interior package and additional cabin accessories and refinements, making the Kodiak perfect as a workhorse or a comfortable executive / passenger transport. The physical design of the Kodiak is highly modern, most notably in the unique ‘dual-wing’ design that
marries two different wing profiles to greatly improve stability and handling characteristics at slow speeds. The Kodiak also features a rugged landing gear and airframe, as well as a large clamshell style door for uploading cargo and passengers more easily. Just over 20% of Kodiak owners choose to operate with floats. The Kodiak was designed from the outset for float operation. With its Aerocet 6650 amphibious floats, it can take off from water or a runway while preserving unprecedented water operation performance. There is no need for structural upgrades. Every Kodiak seaplane is corrosion-proofed both externally and internally to provide the owner with the best protection and least maintenance cost for their investment. In May 2018, Quest Aircraft announced the latest model Kodiak: the Series II. The Series II introduced an impressive block change of enhancements. The standard equipment list was expanded to include Garmin’s next generation G1000NXi, as well as an Angle-of-Attack indexer, digital 4-in-1 standby, Flight Stream 510 and a two-year subscription to the Kodiak Mobile App, backed by Garmin Pilot.
As summer 2019 settles in, Quest Aircraft is in preparations for their biggest display ever during EAA Airventure, the largest airshow and aircraft exhibition in the world, drawing in excess of half a million attendees annually. Quest Aircraft will be bringing four of their flagship Kodiaks. Two of the Kodiak 100 Series II will be stationed at the Quest Aircraft booth (Booth #264). There will also be an amphibious Kodiak on Aerocet 6650 floats exhibited at the Aerocet booth (Booth #255). Additionally, a fourth Kodiak will be on display within the Daher booth (Booth #387). Along with partner Pratt & Whitney Canada, Quest Aircraft will again co-sponsor AirVenture’s daily air shows. The air shows are a cornerstone of the entire Oshkosh gathering, and include performances by the world’s best aerobatic pilots, international race champions, warbird re-enactments and fly-bys from innovative and one-of-a-kind aircraft. “Of all of the shows and events that we participate in around the world each year, Oshkosh is always at the top of our list. This year we are proud to be able to further expand our presence, and look forward to sharing our enthusiasm for both our product and this industry with our peers and fellow aviators,” said Wells.
The Series II also raised the bar for Kodiak creature comforts. In the cockpit Quest added two new glove boxes for additional cockpit storage, improved Rosen sun visors for better UV protection and ergonomics, and incorporated LEMO plugs for hardwired Bose headsets. The cargo doorstep was redesigned to reduce weight and improve functionality, and fuselage seals have been enhanced to provide even better soundproofing and cabin ventilation. Additionally, a single point refueling station became available as an option, designed to give the operator a simple, clean and easy way to refuel both wing tanks using a single port.
Quest Aircraft continues to cultivate a global dealer and support network, providing customers assurance that their missions will be accomplished. The Kodiak is proudly built in Sandpoint Idaho, with a fleet of over 270 aircraft certified in 67 countries around the globe.
During the release of the Series II, Rob Wells, CEO of Quest Aircraft noted, “We're incredibly proud to debut the Kodiak 100, Series II. The refinements and

ASG is a “go-to” choice for General Aviation
ASG has a well-earned reputation as a “go-to” choice for business and general aviation services. Located in Guernsey and supporting the Channel Islands, UK and European markets, a wide range of capabilities is available to aircraft owners and operators whether they are visiting Guernsey, requiring technical services or in need of assistance in buying or selling an aircraft. ASG was founded in 1990, initially to provide aircraft maintenance services to locally based aircraft owners. From modest beginnings, it has developed into a full-service FBO and maintenance facility on the island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, and attracts customers from far afield. Routine maintenance is available for many different types of general aviation aircraft, including Cirrus, Commander, Piper, and Beechcraft. On the business aviation side, King Air and Eclipse types frequently undergo work at ASG’s 45,000-sq-ft facility. With many years of experience, factory trained engineers and dealer status with Garmin / Avidyne, ASG can offer a full spectrum of services including scheduled inspections, engine maintenance, SB/AD compliance, warranty work and avionics upgrades.
ASG is a Cirrus Service Centre. As an OEM Approved Cirrus Service Centre, the depth of ASG’s capability for Cirrus aircraft is self-evident with owners of all models of the SR20, SR22 & SR22T from a range of countries including the UK, France, Germany and Spain choosing ASG to support their aircraft. From simple scheduled maintenance like oil changes and annual inspections to unscheduled troubleshooting or repairs, customers of ASG consistently receive an excellent service. For the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS), the Inspection and Replacement Service, including the 10-year Parachute Repack, is a seamless operation for ASG. ASG has one of the largest Commander Aircraft fleets under its wings. ASG has been a Commander Approved Service Centre since the 1990’s providing full maintenance assistance to owners of the full range of Commander aircraft. ASG is an Eclipse Gold Service Centre. ASG is also an Eclipse Gold Service Centre and the number of Eclipse owners choosing ASG is increasing. Aircraft based in Guernsey are joined by UK and European owned aircraft for phased maintenance, upgrades and defect rectification. ASG can also provide AOG assistance and compliance with the ADS-B mandate, with the deadline of June 2020 moving ever closer. ASG is capable of maintaining larger, more complex aircraft. King Air aircraft are frequent visitors to ASG, whether locally based or flying in from the UK or Europe. Earlier in 2019 ASG completed a major project that spanned the complete spectrum of its King Air capabilities and expertise. This encompassed a multi-activity contract with Serco Limited that provided aircraft maintenance and aircraft sales expertise for the disposal of seven King Air B200 (which were decommissioned in 2018 having been part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s training programme). ASG supports and facilitates Registration Changes. Increasingly, ASG is providing support to aircraft owners and operators where a registration change is required. With Guernsey located outside of the European Union it has become a favourable location for closing aircraft sales. Registration changes for EASA, Isle of Man (M-Reg), Guernsey 2-REG and US-registered aircraft are frequently in progress. Recent projects completed include Cirrus, Eclipse and King Air aircraft as well as coordination for other types including Pilatus, Hawker and Bombardier (Challenger). ASG is VAT Free. All maintenance work undertaken by ASG is VAT free and this is an added attraction for many UK and European based aircraft owners. ASG has a well-developed FBO ASG’s FBO provides an executive handling service available for the increasing numbers of business and general aviation aircraft visiting Guernsey. ASG is expanding its services. While providing and expanding services to general aviation customers remains a key ASG strategy, a new focus on securing contracts with corporate customers and airlines, as well as developing relationships with several OEMs, has led to a balanced mix of capabilities on offer to the business and general aviation sector. A key new capability ASG is now offering is aircraft sales and acquisitions. ASG is increasing its business partnerships. In December 2018, Guernsey based Pula Ltd announced that it had expanded its portfolio of business aviation interests with the acquisition of 100% of the share capital of ASG Ltd. ASG became part of Pula’s newly formed Aviation Services business – “Pula Aviation Services Limited” and operates alongside Bristol-based Centreline, also a Pula Aviation Services Limited business. Centreline provides services within business and executive aviation, including turnkey aircraft management, business jet charter, FBO and aircraft maintenance. Centreline manages a fleet of 11 business aircraft for their owners, and in 2018 became Europe’s leading operator of the Embraer Legacy 500, with three aircraft operated.

Rolls-Royce ACCEL will be powered by a Siemens eAircraft motor and will attempt to break the electric aircraft speed record, while the company has various eVTOL concepts of its own (below).
Rolls-Royce announced at the Paris Air Show in June that it intends to acquire German company Siemens’ e-Aircraft unit. The deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. “Our eAircraft team, under the leadership of Frank Anton, has made aviation history several times in the past ten years and is a pioneer in electric and hybrid-electric systems for aircraft,” said Roland Busch, CTO and COO of Siemens AG. Siemens eAircraft is an in-house startup with around 180 employees, developing electric and hybrid-electric propulsion systems for the aerospace industry. Rolls-Royce has been investing heavily in “more electric” aircraft technology over several years, and this activity is accelerating as it seeks to be the “powerplant provider of choice.” www.rolls-royce.com

NEWS ROUNDUP AeroTec, magniX Team to e-Power Caravan US company AeroTex and electric engine specialist magniX announced at the Paris Air Show in June that they have teamed up to test/certificate a magi500 750-hp motor on a Cessna 208 Caravan, in place of its single PT6 turboprop engine.
EcoPulse Hybrid Teaming Formed Airbus, Safran and Daher have created a joint project to develop an “EcoPulse” hybrid-electric aircraft based on a Daher TBM airframe. The demonstrator is scheduled to fly in 2022 using electric fans distributed along its wings. Safran will provide the propulsion system; Airbus will carry out aerodynamic analysis and optimization, and install batteries; while TBM will carry out modification and installation work, and flight testing. “This distributed hybrid propulsion demonstrator is a very important step towards preparing the certification standards for a more electric aircraft. It also gives us the opportunity to improve our simulation models and consider their use on larger aircraft,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, executive vice-president engineering at Airbus. www.daher.com

AeroTec president and founder Lee Human said, “The electric aviation revolution is very real, and AeroTec is the right team to help innovative aviation companies like magniX bring their technology to the market sooner.” MagniX propulsion systems are also being tested on a de Havilland Beaver and will soon power the first flight of Israeli company Eviation’s Alice aircraft. www.magniX.aero
At the Paris Air Show in June the Eviation Alice prototype was turning heads, while magniX unveiled its new electric engine.
Czech light aircraft manufacturer Bristell flew an electric two-seat trainer for the first time in late June. The aircraft, the Bristell Energic, was developed with the Swiss Solar Impulse team and is powered by a module produced by H55 and BRM Aero. The aircraft has an endurance of 1.5 hours, enough for up to an hour of flying plus reserves. H55 co-founder and executive chairman André Borschberg, who successfully flew Solar Impulse around the world in 201516, said, “Electric air transport will deeply transform and improve urban mobility… The Bristell Energic is a stepping stone for the development of such new aviation transport solutions, where the challenge will be safety and certification.” BRM Aero founder and CEO, Milan Bristell, said, “The [training] market is impatient for an electric airplane and our goal at Bristell is to be able to respond to this with a flight trainer which is clean, quiet and affordable to operate.” H55 is funded by the Swiss government and Nanodimension, a Swiss Silicon Valley, California-based venture capital fund. www.solarimpulse.com
More than 10 year’s experience and more than 1 million square meters installed
AeroTec is responsible for the Caravan’s modification design, integration, and flight tests with modification already taking place at AeroTec’s flight test centre in Moses Lake, Washington state. The companies are hoping for a first flight by year-end.

Precision Takes Cabri on U.S. Demo Tour Guimbal distributor Precision Aviation Training recently used the delivery flight of a Cabri G2 helicopter (which it dubs “the little big helicopter”) to carry out a demonstration tour across the northern US, with the permission of the aircraft’s purchaser, Indiana-based Sweet Aviation. The tour took a route through Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. The G2 fleet has now flown more than 260,000 flight hours since and the factory in Aix en Provence, France, is completing its 250th aircraft. www.guimbal.com
EASA Rolls Out New Drone Rules EASA has presented new safety and privacy rules which give drone operators until June 2020 to comply, and replace the previous legislation.
Kopter SH09 P3 Flies 100 Hours in Testing Swiss company Kopter had by early July flown 100 hours in the third prototype of its SH09 (P3), completing 34 flights since March in Sicily (Pozzallo) as part of the test programme. The flight envelope has now been opened beyond 10,000 feet and at an airspeed of 135 knots. The next phase of the flight test campaign, after implementing some aerodynamic refinements further improving P3 handling qualities and the retrofit of the main gear box housing, will see P3 going higher, faster and further. It will allow gathering the remaining data needed to finalize the configuration of Pre-Series aircrafts PS4 and PS5, which will contribute to the certification flights next year. 2020 is the target for EASA certification. www.kopter.com
Airbus to Develop Hybrid Helicopter Airbus Helicopters developing a hybrid helicopter and hopes to achieve a first flight in 2020.
According to the agency, “The common rules will help drone operators, whether professional or recreational, to have a clear understanding of what is allowed or not. At the same time, it enables them to operate across borders.”
The project is co-financed by the French Ministry for Transport (DGAC) and aims to develop an electric backup system to power a rotor system for up to 30 seconds.
Once drone operators have been authorised in the state of registration, they are allowed to freely circulate in the EU.
The testbed will be an H130 single-engine helicopter with a Thales electric motor. The battery pack is being developed by Airbus Defence and Space and electric converters will come from Centum Adeneo.
New drones will have to be individually identifiable so that they can be traced – regulators are hoping the measures will prevent incidents such as those last year at London Gatwick Airport EASA will soon publish guidance and is working to present a proposal to the European Commission by the end of 2019 for regulations that will enable “complex drone operations with a high degree of automation.” www.easa.europa.eu
Bruno Even, Airbus Helicopters CEO, said the technology “could deliver new standards in terms of safety by providing pilots of single-engine rotorcraft more flexibility to perform autorotation in case of an engine shutdown. Further evolutions of the same technology could pave the way to a significant reduction in fuel consumption and sound levels, further increasing the acceptance of helicopters in urban environments.” www.airbus.com

Heli Games Are Go! Martin Eigner and Michael Schauff of Germany on the fender course
Crews from the UK, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany competed in the Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup and the first leg of the 2019 Helicopter World Cup. After two days of waiting for the inclement weather to pass, it was all systems go on the last day of Heli UK Expo 2019, Saturday 15th June. There were two competitions within the event - The Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup and the 1st leg of the Helicopter World Cup. The current holder of the Heli UK Expo cup is Germany, so there was national pride at stake as well as world cup medals and points.
Hugh Barklem and Mat Reid GBR waiting for the off
The first event flown was the Slalom Event – the one with the bucket being skilfully manoeuvred on the end of a five-metre rope through a series of gates, with accuracy being of the essence as the event ends with the bucket being placed on a target that could only be described as being a small as a bird table. The course is a minefield where points can be lost for touching posts, being too high, losing too much water – there is a long list. With qualifying out of the way, the German crew Eigner and Schauff were straight in the semi-final, securing their place with superb flying. First up to fight for their own place on the score sheet was the best of British in the form of Rimmer and Rimmer, against first-time competitors to the UK Eduard Malina and Monika Fidrova from the Czech Republic. Despite two very closely run heats, the Brits managed to edge ahead on time and take the heat from the Czech Republic crew. Next up was an all-British heat. Newcomers Paul Trevor and Jack Havery against Alex Furness-Smith and his new crew Evie Wolinska. Great effort from both crews but time was on the side of Furness-Smith and Wolinska, handing them a two nil victory. Last to run was another crew who are first-time UK competitors, Polish pair Piotr Wilk and Marcin Mytar flying against Hugh Barklem and Mat Reid. With both crews matching each other on speed, this heat was down to accuracy, and it was the first quarter final to go to three heats with Barklem and Reid taking the heat 2 to 1.
Stuart and Chris Rimmer GBR flying the fender
The semi final scene was set with three British crews and the German crew. Eigner and Schauff (GER) versus Furness-Smith and Wolinska (GBR), with Eigner and Schauff taking the heat 2 to 0. The second semi final was another all-British affair with Rimmer and Rimmer against Barklem & Reid, with Rimmer putting in a very strong performance. After a busy morning, the slalom final was Eigner and Schauff against British champs Rimmer and Rimmer. Both crews are at world-class level so the pressure was on! Both flew off the line at speed - Rimmer and Rimmer were ahead going up the course gathering only one penalty; Eigner and Schauff were hot on their tail but the pressure was on and they were gathering penalties. Heat 2 and Rimmer and Rimmer were showing no sign of nerves as they took off. This time the German crew were ahead all the way so it was down to penalties – two to Rimmer and 4 to Eigner, handing the gold to the British crew!
Fender Event
With no time to waste, due to the epic weather delay, it was straight on the qualifying round for the Fender event, which is a fast event involving a 6.5

kg yacht fender and three containers. The skill is the different rope lengths – 4, 6 & 8 metres – prior to being put in to the three barrels on the field. Barklem and Reid were best overall, putting their names on the semi-final score sheet. First to kick off the heats was Rimmer and Rimmer against the Polish crew Wilk and Mytar. Wilk and Mytar were worthy of a win but Rimmer and Rimmer edged ahead on time taking the heat 2 to nil. New GBR crew Trevor and Havery were drawn against Germany’s Eigner and Schauff. Time was on the side of Eigner and Schauff, giving them a 2 to nil victory. Last up were the Czech Republic crew Malina and Fidrova against Brits Furness-Smith and Wolinska. This heat was so close in time but the Czech crew took the heat 2 to nil after a faultless final run. Down to the last four and two British crews along with the German crew – Eigner and Schauff, and Czech Republic crew Malina and Fidrova. The draw pitted the two crews against each other – Rimmer and Rimmer against Barklem and Reid. Despite some excellent times from both crews, Rimmer and Rimmer took the heat. The other semi-final saw Germany versus Czech Republic. Both times were identical for heat one but the Czech crew had picked up a penalty en route giving the first heat to the Germans. The German crew upped their game and finished penalty free giving them victory over the Czech crew.
Martin Eigner and Michael Schauff, GER, winners of the Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup and the gold medal winners of the Fender with FAI CIG Commission President, Jacques Berlo.
Final Scores SLALOM
1st - Stuart Rimmer and Chris Rimmer (GBR) 2nd - Martin Eigner and Michael Schauff (GER) 3rd - Hugh Barklem and Mat Reid (GBR)
The fender final was a re-run of the slalom with Rimmer and Rimmer against Eigner and Schauff. Let the battle commence!
FENDER
Eigner and Schauff flew the fastest fender of the event at 60 seconds, taking the first leg of the heat. With all to play for Rimmer and Rimmer shot off the line in a bid to make it a double for them. Eigner and Schauff had different ideas and finished the event 4.2 seconds ahead of Rimmer & Rimmer after both teams flew fault-free rounds.
