Ten Years of Diesel Cycle Technology in General Aviation In 2002 the first diesel aircraft engines – the Centurions of Thielert - were introduced to the piston market. Within the last ten years the engines have proven to be the sole concept to provide a new state-of-the-art technology production and design for General Aviation aircraft. Despite some earlier technical obstacles and later problems of financing, the Centurion Diesel engine is still what you can call “the engine of the future”. Centurion state-the-art production line

Over 3,000 engines have been delivered in the timeframe of a decade though market saw “leaded” times shrinking year over year since 2007. But what has been fact before the Lehman year is still valid. The GA piston market driver is modern technology in all aspects of aircraft: airframe, safety, avionics and propulsion. Remember back in the mid 90’s.

Reliability of CENTURION Engines

In total, well over 3,000 Centurion engines have been delivered so far. In many aspects Centurion is and remains number one for diesel aircraft engines for general aviation,” explained Centurion’s spokesman Sebastian Wentzler.

You have seen neither mass production composite cells and glass cockpits nor alternative propulsion systems. Not a surprise with special regard to engines. The very small market did not allow large development budgets. Also, regulations and certifications are much more complex than in the golden General Aviation age half a century ago. Thielert’s solution was to adapt a mass production car Diesel cycle engine for GA piston aircraft. Just to participate in large design budgets of the automotive industry for proven reliability and to run the engine on the aviation standard fuel: jet fuel. Because fueling the standard, means fueling the future standard with regard to bio fuels and availability. Do not forget the higher efficiency of a Diesel engine. After three and half million flight hours the Centurion engines have proven reliability, fuel efficiency, environmental benefits and readiness for the future. More than a third of the worldwide piston population is covered with supplemental type certifications to install the Centurion 2.0 and 2.0s: Cessna 172, Piper PA-28, Robin DR400 as well as Diamond DA40 and DA42. Today we focus on reliability and what means future readiness in a world of uncertain fuel availability.

As background: The ASTM International standard D1655 is the "Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuels," meaning kerosenes such as Jet A and Jet A-1. The ASTM standard D7566 "Standard Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons" regulates the blending of conventional kerosene with alternative feedstocks.

A Question of Fuel When it comes to jet fuels, environmentally responsible measures are already being successfully promoted. One example for these new, cleaner fuels is the production of eco-friendly jet fuels from biomass or by Fischer-Tropsch process. The technical standards for these so-called semi-synthetic jet fuels (SSJFs) are set by ASTM International. Certifications from the aviation authorities are based on these standards. Improved engine launched 2006 - Centurion 2.0

In contrast to the competition, Centurion engines were developed under the assumption that they could be integrated with the same weight under existing cowlings. This enables their use in a wide range of aircraft, as well as the technically simple replacement of the Centurion 1.7 with the Centurion 2.0, which can be carried out in all aircraft. Both engines feature aboveaverage reliability. According to data from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), general aviation aircraft experience an average of 10 in-flight shutdowns (IFSD) for every 100,000 flight hours. The shutdown rate of Centurion engines is approximately 50 percent lower and may be even less. For example, in the period since the market launch in 2002, the shutdown rate for all Centurion engine models has been 5.46 shutdowns per 100,000 flight hours. Over the past 52 weeks, the shutdown rate of the currently latest engine model, the Centurion 2.0, was actually only 2.32 IFSD per 100,000 flight hours. This makes it one of the most reliable piston engines in general aviation.

launch of the Centurion 1.7 in 2002, we provided the decisive stimulus for the develoment of alternative propulsion systems for small aircraft.

As logical technical enhancements, the Centurion 2.0 and 2.0s possess a range of advantages over the 1.7 since they incorporate the entire field experience gained with the predecessor model. The cumulative flight hours of the Centurion fleet increased over the same period to more than three and a half million hours up to now. “With the market

The latest specifications regulate the blending of SSJFs with conventional kerosene. To this effect, the FAA published the information bulletin NE-11-36 in September 2011 announcing that the new SSJFs can be used in aircraft and engines approved for use with Jet A or Jet A-1 fuels. This applies without limitation to Centurion piston aircraft engines.

Most aircraft fly with jet fuel

The company has worked with the precursors to SSJFs for years and Centurion engines have been undergoing tests with the new fuels for over two years. These tests have shown that Centurion engines are not only perfectly suited for the new SSJFs, but for fully synthetic fuels as well. Owners of Centurion engines will in the future be able to tank up with these new fuels without worry.

In July 2011, this specification was expanded to include various biofuels. D7566 fuels must show properties and performance that are essentially identical to those of conventional jet fuels according to D1655, which allows blending of D1655 fuels with components under the D7566 specification. Synthetic and semi-synthetic jet fuels previously approved according to ASTM D7566 and mixed with mineral oil-based turbine fuels that correspond to ASTM D1655 can now be re-identified as D1655 fuels when they enter the distribution system and do not need to be separately declared. As a result, it will not always be apparent to fuel suppliers whether biofuels or other SSJFs are present. The FAA determined in September 2011 that D7566 fuels meet all of the requirements for D1655 specification and can therefore be used in all aircraft and engines that are approved to operate with D1655 fuels. Operational limits in aircraft flight manuals, operating instructions, and type certificate data sheets that specify ASTM D1655 Jet A or Jet A-1 fuel are also valid for use with D7566 fuels. However, other limitations from authorization holders can be implemented. From the manufacturer and certification holder of Centurion engines, there are no such limitations. Owners of Centurion engines therefore do not need to worry when it comes to using the new fuels. The economical and reliable Centurion engines have thereby once again shown themselves to be sustainable and environmentally friendly aircraft engines.

A beautiful grass runway is about 600 meters x 20 metres wide with good safety margins and clear approaches was built. Followed by a couple of lakes and some houses. All we needed was some like-minded pilots and sailors to come and join us and have some fun. The air is pure, no noise pollution, the sky at night is really something else, it is almost frightening, bringing a telescope is a must. Some bird-watcher friends found 55 varieties of birds inside the farm. There are all sorts of animals, not to mention our 4 Dalmatians, 3 cats, Molly and her 7 sheep friends that eat from our hands, as well as ducks and geese.

Leonardo da Costa Sayago came to the UK in the mid-1960’s to study Naval Architecture at Sunderland University. He specialised in Yacht Design working first for Campers & Nicholson, then Angus Primorose, then setting up his own Design Office. Many thousands of Yachts and Powerboats being built to his designs, such as the Sailfish 18,OS 19,Sandpiper 565,Miss Enfield ,Crusader ,Sealord 15 & 25 ,Caravela 22 & 25 , in fact too many to mention. From his Headquarters in Hamble he distributed yachts such as Beneteau, Feeling, GibSea, Sweden Yachts, Nauticat. He became a pilot in 1981 and also became involved with the marketing of Robin, Mooney and Maule aircraft. In 1993 he retired to his home country, Portugal and managed to stay retired for a whole 2 weeks. Retirement was really not for him, so he started to look for a farm to create his old dreams of starting both a Pilots’ Village and an Aviation company to import some super small planes from Central Europe such as the Eurostar ,SportCruiser and the Eurofox. Right in the center of Portugal he found a 75 acres farm in an area of outstanding natural beauty, next to a big lake complete with private beaches of fine sand and water temperatures of about 25 + centigrade. The lake is about 25 kms long by 2 kms wide. Good, steady winds of about 10knots, perfect for flying, sailing, water-skiing, fishing, balooning, bird watching etc., etc.

We are 30 minutes flying time from Lisbon and Badajoz, 45 minutes from the Algarve, 1 hour from the snow skiing peaks of our big mountain Estrela in the Winter. From the UK we are 2 hours flying time at ridiculously cheap rates, making it feasible to come for just a week end. All are welcome to visit and discuss with us your requirements and I am sure you will not only enjoy your trip and may even want to share our "Little Paradise" here in Sunny Portugal.

Van’s Aircraft special light sport RV-12

Kitplane manufacturer Van’s Aircraft jumped into the factory-built market with the announcement in mid-October that it will produce a special light sport RV-12. The company announced at AOPA Aviation Summit that it will work with Synergy Air of Eugene, Ore., a company that currently offers builder assistance programs, to manufacture an initial production run of 12 special light sport aircraft (S-LSAs), offered as “Signature Edition” models for an introductory price of €96,000, ($115,000). The company expects to offer a standard model at €87,500, ($105,000). Offering a factory-built aircraft is a departure for the company, which has close to 7,900 experimental aircraft in its line of RVs flying today.

Fifteen year old Alex Harris became the UK’s youngest ever solo glider pilot when he took to the air at Essex Gliding Club at 1 pm on 10th October. Alex, who is a cadet member, has been flying since he was 12, wasted no time before making his historic flight, in a club ASK-13 glider. The rule lowering the glider solo age from 16 to 14 had only been approved by the British Gliding Association’s Executive Committee three days earlier.

At the end of September, the Classic Aircraft Trust’s Percival Proctor IV made its first post-restoration flight at Coventry Airport. This flight followed 18 years of painstaking work rebuilding the airframe and restoring the aircraft completely to full flying condition. The paint finish including an RAF fin flash represents a Proctor as operated in Washington D.C., for the UK Ambassador as a diplomatic aircraft.

As part of their re-location programme further aircraft are being moved from the Imperial War Museum site in Lambeth, London to various sites around the UK. One of the most recent is the Focke Wulf Fw190 which had been displayed suspended from the roof at Lambeth, has now been sent to RAF Cosford for ground level museum display. By October 18, a V1, Sopwith2.F1 Camel and Royal Aircraft Factory Be.2 had also been moved to the IWM Duxford site. A Supermarine Spitfire Mk 1A and North American P51-D Mustang followed them in November. The IWM Lambeth site is creating the space in readiness for its World War 1 Centenary displays at the museum commencing 2014.  More information visit -

Following a major overhaul by the Aircraft Restoration Company, the Spitfire PR.XIX flew at Duxford on October 9. The Spitfire had arrived from East Midlands Airport in September 2010, and was de-riveted and re-skinned in the following two years. The final paint finishes returned the aircraft to PR Blue. More Griffon Spitfires will be coming to the UK soon. In mid-October in Rangoon, Burma David Cundall signed the deal with the Burmese government that will allow commencement of work to recover a number (as many as 20) Spitfire Mk X1vs that are said to have been buried at Mingaladon in August 1945.

In mid-October, the Italian Air Force flew one of its VIP SH-3D helicopters to the Air Forc Museum at at Vigna di Valle. Serialled MM80973, the helicopter has been operated Retiring Italian Air Force VIP SH-3D by the 31° helicopter (Photo - Damiano Gualdoni) Stormo unit since it was acquired in 1976. The helicopter amassed 13,000 hours, and has flown many Italian VIPs as well as foreign rulers and royal family members. Hawker Siddeley Nimrod R.1 was unveiled at the RAF Museum Cosford at the end of September. The former 52 Squadron aircraft had arrived by road from Kemble, earlier this year, and was reassembled during the summer. Te aircraft is only one of four aircraft that were built originally as signals intelligence (SIGINT) aircraft.

The public first appearance of the first ever Italian jet to be restored in Itraly took place at Emilia Airport on September 15. The aircraft was an Aermacchi MB326E owned by Renzo Catellani who runs the Vola Fenice Flying Museum. The restoration to fly had commenced in 2008. This restoration is one of many such projects underway currently in Italy which is seeing renewed interest in bringing former aircraft back to display and flying condition.

The Royal Engineers Museum (REM) in Gillingham, Kent took delivery of a recently restored A4/V2 rocket on Septemvber 11. The V2 had been located close by at the Royal School of Military Engineering depot for about 40 years. The rocket was restored during the summer by Borley Brothers in Cambridge who have restored other samples. The rocket was originally captured intact near Nienburg in Northern Germany in 1945.

A former Spanish Civil War veteran Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 recently arrived in Germany at the workshops of Meier Motors in Bremgarten. The aircraft will now undergo a complete restoration to return it to full flying conditiuoin. It was recovered from a yard in Spain by British collector Robs Lamplough in 1983 and spent several years on display at the Tangmere Museum, near Goodwood, West Sussex.  More information visit -www.meiermotors.com

Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) from LEVIL Technology - Mobile device product from MENDELSOHN Pilot Supplies Levil Technology have released their newest Attitude and Heading Reference Levil AHRS G Mini SW System (AHRS) for mobile devices. The new AHRS-G mini provides pitch and bank information as well as magnetic heading, inclination, gravity load and yaw rate without any connections to the aircraft’s electrical or vacuum system. The 5oz instrument can also provide air data when connected to the pitot-static system enabling mobile devices to display the conventional “six pack” of instruments. The “mini” version is an addition to Levil’s existing

When the airplane left Los Angeles with full fuel, it was 21,000 pounds below MTOW meaning that the customer can add a full VIP interior, fill all the seats, and still carry full fuel and enjoy remarkable range. The airplane had 7,800 pounds of fuel remaining when it landed in Auckland. The BBJ, owned by Samsung Electronics, is equipped with seven auxiliary fuel tanks, givingit the extended range capability. It also features lower-cabin altitude, which differentiates it from its competitor. The option provides a 6,500-foot cabin altitude instead of the standard 8,000-foot cabin, allowing passengers to travel in greater comfort. The airplane was flown to New Zealand for the first interior completion of a new BBJ by Altitude Aerospace Interiors, an Auckland-based company which was launched in 2008. Boeing delivers the BBJ to the customer "green" (no interior or paint) so it can be customized to suit the specific needs and taste of the customer. Cessna, in conjunction with InnotechExecaire has announced an agreement with AirSprint Private Aviation, based in Calgary, Alberta, for a minimum of nine Citation CJ2+ aircraft. At a current retail price of $6.695 million per unit, this agreement represents a total retail value of approximately $60.255 million. Gloucestershire Airport passed a major milestone today when the Civil Aviation Authority officially Gloucester Airport published its increased runway distances. Although only 12m of additional tarmac have been laid, the removal of obstacles nearby and creation of an overrun RESA means the landing distances available for aircraft have increased by up to 150m.

Being minutes from the M5, we’re well placed to capture that traffic.” The final stage of the project sees the installation of an Instrument Landing System (ILS), complementing the existing suite of non-precision approaches including GNSS.

The increases are as a result of a package of safety measures the Airport has implemented as part of its Runway Safety Project, which has seen houses demolished and rebuilt, a new entrance road created and a section of a brook culverted and diverted past the end of the Staverton tarmac. Runway 27 has also been upgraded for Cat 1 ILS approaches.

AgustaWestland has unveiled a new variant of its single-engined AW119 Koala family. The AW119Kx was debuted at the Air Medical Transport Conference (AMTC) in Seattle on 22 October. The new aircraft is fitted with the Garmin G1000H flight deck and a host of new avionics and pilot aids including synthetic vision systems, a moving map, as well as terrain and obstacle avoidance system. The upgrade was designed as part of an order for 15 aircraft by the Life Flight Network signed at Heli-Expo in Dallas in February. The system. previously known as the 'Next Generation Cockpit Display' was signed to give the Life Flight aircraft an all weather capability ready for when the aircraft begin operations in 2013 across Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

AgustaWestland has confirmed that it has been selected to go forward to the contracting phase for their bid of up to £46 million from Round 3 of the UK Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF). The combined RGF and AgustaWestland investment of more than £100 million will create a brand new industry sector in the UK with the establishment of a Civil Helicopter Hub. The projects will create and safeguard over 3000 jobs across the UK and create hundreds of new opportunities for the UK supply chain. The funding will also support the design and development in the UK of advanced technologies in the field of tiltrotor systems integration and for increasing the performance of tiltrotors, which combine the benefits of a helicopter and an aeroplane in one aircraft.

A three Judge panel of France’s Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris recently ruled that the Bell 429 production skid gear does not infringe Eurocopter’s French landing skid gear patent. The Swedish Maritime Administration has signed an agreement with the Anglo-Italian helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland SpA to acquire seven new AW139 helicopters for its nation-wide search and rescue (SAR) service. The first delivery is expected in May 2013.

Russian Helicopters Launches 2013 “Helicopters XXI Century” Competition Russian helicopter holding "Russian Helicopters" has confirmed the start of the annual competition of design and development "Helicopters of XXI Century" . This has been held in conjunction with the Corporate University of OJSC "UIC" Oboronprom "since 2008. The main purpose of the "Helicopters XXI Century" competition is to attract young people to helicopter construction. Hopefully, this will produce a reserve of young talented potential designers and engineers for the Russian helicopter industry in the future.
