The world’s first diesel promotion tour through Africa was performed where gasoline is hardly available and fuel is a question of fly or not to fly.

NiC3 – the Nickel Silicon Carbide Coation for Cylinders Continental Motors new NiC3™ range of premium cylinders for Continental, Titan and Lycoming engines. Continental Motors has announced the launch of a new range of cylinders, available for Continental Motors, Titan Experimental and Lycoming engines. These cylinders are treated with a Nickel Silicone Carbide coating, offering corrosion resistance, reduced friction wear and better cylinder wall hardening.

Continental Motors has made an announcement recently that could be a game changer for many owner pilots.

We all fly much less than we would like to and, apart from our proficiency, there are some direct consequences on our engines.

When we fly, our engines reach the recommended operating temperatures.

These temperatures have been calculated and tested by the engine manufacturers to be the ideal range in which the engine will reach its optimum performance. While operated within that temperature range, there is something else that is happening: any moisture or water droplets quickly evaporate. “Why should there be any moisture and water droplets in my engine?” is a question that we hear often.

The answer is quite simple. When the engine is shut down after a flight, the cylinders are empty, filled with ambient air while the engine is still hot. The air cools down rapidly, and the humidity in the air condenses inside the engine, creating visible moisture and/or small water droplets.

If your engine is flown very regularly (like engines operated by an aero-club or a flight schools), this moisture doesn’t sit long enough to create corrosion problems.

But if your engine sits for a while before being flown again, you have good chances of seeing corrosion appear inside the cylinders. You also have to take into account the weather conditions. A plane that is kept in a dry or heated hangar will be less susceptible to this phenomenon.

On October 4 a Continental Motors Crew left Kassel, in Germany, to fly to the southern tip of South Africa. Their flying carpet took the shape of one of the latest models of the Piper Aircraft Range: The Piper Archer DX. This single engine four seater is equipped with Continental Motors CD-155 compression ignition engine.

In layman’s terms, read that this engine does not burn the leaded fuel usually used in general aviation aircraft, but the same fuel as the turbine or jet equipped aircraft.

This difference alone made the whole trip possible as avgas is not readily available in regions such as Africa or many countries outside of Europe and the USA.

Continental Motors has an answer to these problems. Owners/operators that encounter conditions where corrosion could become a concern, can now opt for the premium line of Nic3™cylinders.

These cylinders are internally coated with Nickel Silicone Carbide. They are available for Continental and Lycoming engines installed in certified aircraft. Titan experimental engines also can be ordered with Nic3™ cylinders. Nickel Silicone Carbide coating of cylinders has been used for a long time in automotive racing and in high-end production cars.

Companies such as Porsche and Suzuki have been using this type of coating on their top of the range models and continue to do so today. For General Aviation engines, the main benefits, apart from corrosion resistance, are the reduction of friction wear and the hardening of the steel barrel. As Nickel Silicone Carbide coating is extremely tough, the wear of the cylinder walls in also greatly reduced. The coating continues to protect the cylinder walls during the life of the cylinder. “We typically can quantify friction wear reduction when we measure the cylinders at the end of their life cycle.

Nic3™ treated cylinders will probably exhibit wear measured in the region of 10/1000th of an inch. Which is significantly less than what is usually observed on standard steel wall cylinders” says Jürgen Schwartz, Vice-President of engineering, Continental Motors. “Another advantage is that after coating the steel cylinder barrel, the hardness of the cylinder barrel is increased. All these properties contribute to create a new value proposition for our clients. And that’s what we are all about: transform technical innovation into value for our clients.”

After receiving requests for information from flight schools located in Africa, it took only a few weeks the crew to organize an Africa Demo Tour. The tour started from Kassel via Marseille, Calgiari, Malta, Crete, Egpyt to Nairobi, Kenya, where it was introduced to several flight schools along with its Turbo Diesel Engine. The pilots and mechanics there wanted to know everything about the engine and the aircraft.

In South Africa the trip continued to fly to Cape Town via Bloemfontein and Beaufort with many demo flights.

The schools are particularly interested in the combination of performance and ability to burn JetA instead of AVGAS. On the performance front, they were impressed by the liquid cooling system and the safety provided by the turbo compressor that maintains the power output level of the engine, even in very hot conditions.

The Board of Directors of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) established a new associate member category for electric and hybrid propulsion aircraft.

The purpose behind this new membership category is to facilitate the coordination of the associate members’ technical expertise and GAMA’s collective policy experience to better enable the worldwide development, growth, and airworthiness certification of electric and hybrid propulsion technology to benefit the future of general aviation.

“As GAMA completes its 45th year, we are very excited to welcome companies researching and developing electric and hybrid propulsion air vehicles as associate members to our global trade association,” GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce said.

The Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has approved seven companies—Celestica, Elliott Aviation, Gogo, Luxaviation Group, Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics, TRU Simulation + Training, and Yingling Aviation —as the association’s newest members. GAMA now has 91 members. The seven new members represent the largest number of companies to join the association at one time in GAMA’s 45-year history.

“The seven new companies joining GAMA bring experience and expertise in all parts of our industry and in key areas of the world, including the United States, Canada, and Europe,” said GAMA Chairman Joe Brown, President of Hartzell Propeller Inc. “Their decision to join reaffirms the association’s sterling reputation for effectiveness on policy and regulatory issues, in-depth technical knowledge, and safety and technology leadership.”

Danish Lite Flite achieves EN9100 certification

Helicopter manufacturers like Airbus Helicopters and Agusta Westland, large civilian operators like CHC and Bristow, Air Forces around the world and all our other customers, will all benefit from this certification. While the development of new products may take slightly longer due to the huge amount of paperwork, finished products will be of the highest quality from the very first production batch, says John Holstein, Technical Director and founder of the company.

We have been working with our quality management system for the past two years.

One of the greatest challenges has been to figure out, how we could implement this demanding standard with its requirements for strict procedures, and still be able to deliver new products to our customers, with a very short lead time, says Thomas Knudstrup, Senior Product Manager and co-owner of Lite Flite.

While being based on the well known ISO9001 standard, the lesser known, but very prestigious, AS/EN9100 standard is specifically targeted to suppliers to the Aviation-, Space- and Defence Industries. This includes a very high degree of supplier management, full traceability of raw

Bell Helicopter, announced during October that its Aeronautical Accessories brand has added a new Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved Special Ops Platform/Step to its product line for the Bell 429 aircraft.

This new convenience accessory received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from the FAA in September.

The Special Ops Platform/Step is a lightweight, all-aluminum construction that includes all mounting hardware. The step is machined to provide a long lasting anti-slip enhancement and improve mission capabilities and security for special operations.

The platform assists crews that use hoists, fast rope or rappelling kits by providing a large, stable step. The product can be installed on one or both sides of the aircraft and is available with a customized skid tube hoist guard for right-hand installations.

Benefits include: • Quick, easy installation with minimal down-time.

• More stable, flat platform for crew compared to standing on round skid gear while operating equipment.

• Anti-skid surface provides “teeth” for more secure footing • Customized skid tube hoist guard available for right- hand side that provides gear protection from hoist cable damage.

The airfield in Amougies was created as a private airfield in 1968 and taken over by the brother's Guisset in 1980.

In 1995 we decided to commercialize the airfield.

Our roots were PPL training, GA maintenance and glider towing. In 1998 we decided to enter the UL business. We sold our six GA planes and invested in new UL planes, especially Rans Coyote S6ES. We bought and built over 25 kits.

The sale of ultralights started in 2008 with the arrival of VL-3 which became our great success. 4 years later, in February 2012, we took over the production of VL-3 in the Czech Republic and created the JMB Aircraft company. Today the group has 60 employees in the Czech Republic and 5 in Belgium.

JMB Aviation, the dealer of VL-3 Evolution for France and Belgium, is based at the airfield Amougies (EBAM) in Belgium.

This private airfield has a runway of 610 m, 400m² maintenance workshop, 3500m² of hangars, micro light flying school and a restaurant.

The airfield Amougies is open 7/7.

The final stop for the 2015 Red Bull Air Race World Championship sizzled with excitement and adrenaline as stormy skies and high winds set the scene for race day at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Top contenders Paul Bonhomme and Matt Hall had no problem flying their way from the Round of 14 into the Round of 8, as their speed could not be beat. Being the fastest loser in the Round of 14 put Michael Goulian in the Round of 8, where he was pitted against the speed of Yoshihide Muroya. Goulian flew perfectly, but Yoshihide finished his run with one of the fastest times of the day – leaving him in 6th place.

Multiple contracts and agreements were signed on a show floor that was buzzing with curious visitors and networking industry. Waypoint Leasing announced two major orders, committing to 20 Airbus Helicopters H135s and firming up an order for 18 aircraft from AgustaWestland.

AgustaWestland announced an order from Heliservices for an AW169 to be used for offshore missions and confirmed contracts in Asia for 10 AW139s. Eight will be supplied to the Royal Thai Army for passenger transport and utility. A further two are being supplied to a customer for law enforcement purposes. PDG signed for an Airbus H135 to support its PDGâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s service contract with the General Lighthouse Authorities. The Yorkshire Air Ambulance also ordered an H145 helicopter, highlighting the public services dimension of Helitech International.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s static displays provided an impressive visual element to the event including a Guimbal Cabri G2 from Helicentre, a Robinson 44 Raven II from A2B Aero, an AS350 from AS Aerospace, an Airbus H135 a Sikorsky S-76 from Air Harrods and a Bell 429 which also took visitors up on flights during the show.

The Education Programme returned to provide a critical thought leadership pillar for industry and delegates. Day oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Business & Strategy Conference was expanded this year to include two Focus On sessions on UAVs and offshore wind farms. The question around whether UAVs and helicopters can co-exist was raised, as the number of commercially available UAVs is rising quickly. The wind farm element included a market outlook that determined the sector is growing healthily as the grid expands.

As installations move further afield there has been increased demand for medium to heavy helicopters. Some of the key challenges associated with servicing wind farms from the air were illustrated in engaging video presentations, while other issues were raised such as ensuring there are adequate rules in place to ensure safe offshore operations.

The Business Leaders Forum, the morningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s section of the Business and Strategy Conference, saw an expert panel cover important issues facing the industry, and provide a market outlook for the next 5-10 years.

Significantly, the global drop in oil prices was discussed and revealed to be having an adverse effect on demand for rotorcraft, with a consequent fall in production. However this was counter balanced by growth opportunities in the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and Search & Rescue (SAR) sectors that have helped maintain the overall health of the industry. Emerging markets such as China also offer potentially huge business opportunities.

Wilfried Otto had his first trial flight at the age of 25. Eight days later he purchased his own personal airplane and 6 months later he had his Private Pilots Licence. The Commercial Pilots Licence, Instrument Rating and Flight Instructor qualification followed shortly thereafter. Since then he is driven by his passion for flying, having flown more than 7000 flight hours in command.

“Today I am probably longer in the general aviation industry than anyone else” says Wilfried Otto.

To finance his hobby Wilfried Otto established an aircraft charter company, Lahnflug Wilfried Otto. In 1970 his company was appointed as a Piper Dealer by Henschel Flugzeugwerke in Kassel who were the authorised Piper Distributor since 1968.

Based on the success and achievements of Lahnflug, Henschel Flugzeugwerke appointed Wilfried Otto as the Managing Director of the business division “Piper Aircraft” in 1975.

Wilfried Otto had a clear vision of the Piper Distributorship for the future and set a new approach. Under his management the aircraft parts operations were significantly expanded.

The following years were the best in General Aviation. In the late 1970's Piper Germany sold approximately 150 Piper aircraft every year.

The market for new aircraft collapsed in the 1980's and there were several changes in the ownership of Henschel Flugzeugwerke. In 1983 MBB, the owner of the Piper Business Division, placed the Piper Business on the market to sell.

Wilfried Otto then acquired the business through a Management/Employee Buy Out together with former employees and Piper Dealers. Since then the company has continuously grown by consistently providing a first class service to customers. In 1985 the company built its own facilities at Kassel Airport. In 1986 the company went public and has been listed on the stock exchange since then.

In 1998 the company constructed a second building for aircraft maintenance and service.

New Building in 2013 After the stakeholders of Kassel Airport signed a memorandum of understanding to upgrade the airport, Piper Germany purchased 14,500 sqm land right next to the tower at the new airport and constructed a state of the art building of 3,600 sqm in size for aircraft sales, aircraft parts supply, aircraft maintenance and service under one roof.

In Spring 2013 the new airport was opened. Piper Germany relocated to the new airport with its entire operations in summer 2013 and continued in the tradition of owning the land and buildings. Kassel is located in the heart of Germany and is one of the fastest growing economic regions in the centre of Europe.

Piper Germany is an authorised dealer for Piper Aircraft, Inc. for the territories of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, England and Ireland.

Piper Germany is also the exclusive Piper Dealer for France together with a French partner as a Joint Venture.

Indian Spitfire FRMkXVIII, soon to be fully restored.

In an announcement on October 5, the Indian Air Force confirmed that the last Spitfire in use anywhere in the world as an instructional airframe will be restored to flying condition for the Indian Air Force Vintage Flight. It is thought that the aircraft will return to the UK for a full restoration. The IAF also intends to restore a Hurricane, Tempest and Lysander to fly.

The ultimate goal will be to get its Westland Wapiti – the only survivor of the type – back in the air.

Speed, agility, efficiency and cabin comfort make the distinctive Piaggio P180 a perfect fit for many, but it hasn’t been an easy road for the current aftermarket fleet. The largest single operator of the Avanti fleet was the now dissolved Avantair, operating with 57 Avanti aircraft at its peak.

The fractional provider was launched in 2003 and operated the Piaggio Avanti exclusively.

Avantair monopolized the Piaggio Avanti deliveries for several years as the company grew by leaps and bounds and went public in 2007.

But by 2012, Avantair voluntarily grounded its fleet because of an elevator issue and in 2013, with serious maintenance issues that most of us will have read about, Avantair ceased operations and declared bankruptcy.

In January 2014, there was an auction to sell off all the assets, while many lawsuits were filed.

So that brings us to the aircraft’s aftermarket landscape of today, and with all the negative publicity, John Koltes, Founder and President, Jet Trader Group and Piaggio Avanti pilot, feels the aircraft is misunderstood by many in the industry, and that sometimes prospective buyers don’t give it fair consideration.

“The Avanti owners I have spoken to and flown with over the years love the aircraft,” Koltes notes. “But soon after it was introduced, the fast growing Avantair took the majority of the aircraft off the production line for its fractional business.

They were flying many more hours than the aircraft was designed for, so replacement parts and keeping up with maintenance became a huge challenge for them.

New Dawn As the water passes under the bridge on this chapter for Piaggio Aerospace the future looks brighter with new majority owners, Mubadala, and a new third generation Avanti named EVO. The service and support concerns from the Avantair era has been replaced with an enhanced commitment to customer service and a worldwide network of authorized MRO facilities.

There is no doubt that the loyal Piaggio Avanti customers will be taking a hard look at the additional amenities that the new EVO aircraft offers, including greater range and more speed.

By the end of this year, approximately 30 of the Piaggio Avanti aircraft from Avantair should be recertified and flying again, and all of this happened within a relatively short period of time.

This was no easy accomplishment, and it demonstrates the dedication Piaggio Aerospace has for the aircraft’s future and to the customers who own and operate them, Koltes claims.

Many Avanti fractional owners went through lengthy processes, after the Avantair bankruptcy to become whole owners because of their positive experience operating this aircraft.

“The Piaggio Avanti following is loyal, and they have a thorough understanding of the aircraft’s potential that I hope will translate across our industry,” Koltes summarizes. “A pre-owned Piaggio Avanti should be given great consideration by so many buyers right now. As of October 13, the G500 flight test aircraft had successfully completed more than 45 missions, the longest of those being 5 hours and 22 minutes for a total aircraft flight time of more than 100 hours.

In the five months since the aircraft’s first flight, it has reached an altitude of 38,500 feet/ 11,735 metres and a Gulfstream’s G500. maximum airspeed of Mach 0.80.

“It’s just really exciting to see how well this aircraft is performing,” enthused Dan Nale, senior vice president, Programmes, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “This plane has been flying exactly as expected, which highlights our commitment to quality and our attention to detail… Our test pilots have said the aircraft’s handling qualities are exceptional.”

The G500 flight-test and certification programme includes four test aircraft. Each is used for a specific series of tests, with the first aircraft (T1) focused on flight performance and flight controls, the second (T2) on flight loads validation, the third (T3) on avionics, and the fourth (T4) on human factors and supporting systems.

The programme also includes one aircraft with a fully outfitted interior to validate the functionality and compatibility of various cabin systems when used at altitude.

Together, the G500 and G600 programs have accomplished more than 39,000 hours of lab testing. Gulfstream anticipates certification of the G500 in 2017, with entry into service in 2018.

The G600 certification is slated to follow in 2018, with entry into service in 2019.

There were 72,640 Business Aviation flight departures in Europe during September 2015 according to WingX. This was slightly more than in August, but 4% down on last year, and takes the YTD trend for 2015 to -1.4%.

Business Aviation activity in Europe relapsed in September. The decline in the CIS market continued to sap the market, but in addition, flight activity was significantly down in the UK, Switzerland, Italy and Spain (see Map A).

This may reflect the torrid financial markets and the darkening prospects for the global economy in the last couple of months.

Héroux-Devtek to provide AW609 landing gear systems Héroux-Devtek Inc., a leading international manufacturer of aerospace products, announced at the end of September that it has been awarded a long-term contract by Finmeccanica-AgustaWestland to supply the landing gear for the AW609 TiltRotor aircraft.

Under the terms of the agreement, Héroux-Devtek will design, develop, fabricate, assemble, test and deliver complete landing gear systems for the AW609 aircraft. This life-cycle mandate also includes the provision of spare parts. The new contract for Héroux-Devtek follows the introduction by AgustaWestland of several performance and product improvements to enhance the AW609’s capabilities.

Design work is expected to begin very shortly and will be mainly carried out at the St-Hubert (Québec) and Runcorn (UK) facilities, marking the first partnership between Héroux-Devtek’s North American operations and AgustaWestland. The Corporation’s European

DECEMBER 2015 FAA signs STC agreements with EASA and TC On September 15, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) signed agreements with two international regulatory partners, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Transport Canada (TCCA) that allow the authorities to rely on each other’s regulatory systems. The agreements will eliminate duplicate processes, get safety enhancing equipment installed on aircraft more quickly, and save time and money for both industry and the regulatory authorities involved.

Strong partnerships are a key to consistent safety standards around the world. Based on more than a decade of FAA cooperation with EASA and over fifteen years with TCCA, the agencies have established confidence in each other’s regulatory systems. Rooted in that confidence, the new safety agreements allow reciprocal acceptance of the majority of Technical Standard Order (TSO)-approved articles. This change benefits U.S., Canadian, and European aerospace industries organizations by eliminating the need for applications, additional validation and administrative review by each party.

The new agreement with EASA also facilitates acceptance of the classification for basic Supplemental Type Certificates (STC’s). An audit process will ensure that technical classifications continue to meet established criteria, and make sure standards are being met.

HELIPORT

Russia – New Heliport to be built at Kaluga Heliports of Russia have recently announced plans for a new heliport in Kaluga, to open in the second half of 2016. Russian website ATO.ru reports that the announcement, made recently at the JetExpo 2015 event in Moscow, identifies a site on the bank of the river Oka, and a cost of “over 300 million roubles” ($4.5M at today’ prices) has been quoted.

The heliport will feature approved maintenance centres for Robinson and Airbus Helicopters, with Bell main- Mr. Alexander Khrustalev, CEO of tenance added «Heliports of Russia», and Japanese viceat a later date. minister of land relations, infrastructure, transport and tourism, Mr. Kisaburu Ishi.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles/Systems (UAV/UAS) may be known by a number of names, to include model aircraft, drones, or remote-piloted aircraft (RPA).

UAV/UAS operators include aviation hobbyists, as well as commercial operators who wish to use new and emerging technology in more creative ways to satisfy consumer demand.

As such, the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) believes that a set of regulatory requirements (visit website), would allow for integration of UAV/UAS into low-level airspace while optimizing the safety and privacy of emergency personnel and patients in need of assistance: Emergency responders, on the ground and in the air, are discovering the presence of UAV/UAS with increasing frequency, creating unique safety and operational concerns. The ability of piloted aircraft to see small UAV/UAS in ample time to avoid them cannot be presumed. UAV/UAS are simply too small, are often traveling too fast, and are virtually invisible. Therefore, the responsibility to see and avoid must also rest with the UAV/UAS operators and reasonable separation requirements must be established.

Captain Rob Mackie has flown with DAAT for 23 years recording an amazing 7890 missions during his service.

The helicopter pilot who has the longest service record and the most mission flights with a single Air Ambulance charity is to use his vast accumulation of knowledge and experience to become the Safety Manager at Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Captain Rob Mackie has flown with DAAT for 23 years recording an amazing 7890 missions during his service but, as he approached his 60th birthday, regulations demand he gives up single pilot flying.

Heléna Holt, CEO of DAAT added “Thankfully we will not be saying goodbye to Rob. When we were awarded our own Air Operating Certificate (AOC) last year, Rob took on the role of Safety Manager and played an integral part in setting up our safety management systems. It was a challenging time for all the team as Devon Air Ambulance Trading Company Limited (DAATCL) were the first Air Ambulance to have developed and been awarded an AOC fully compliant with the new EASA regulations.

UK – Rooftop helipad planned for Manchester hospitals As part of National Air Ambulance Week (21-27 September) Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity (CMFT Charity) launched its new £3.9 million Charity Appeal to build a dedicated helipad on site at the Trust.

Using the strapline, ‘Time Saves Lives’, the Helipad Appeal will enable the creation of a brand-new 24-hour access primary helicopter landing site, the first of its kind in central Manchester. This will allow the Trust to save many more lives and will increase the chances of a full or improved level of recovery in a great many seriously ill or injured patients.
