Chris Kuehn, recently appointed Vice President of Aftermarket Sales and Support, answered the questions we had regarding Continental Motors strategy, product announcements and road map for the future. ®

GAB: What are the most important projects that Continental® Motors is working on currently? KUEHN: Continental®Motors, despite being the company that has been consistently leading the pack from a technology standpoint (first to bring turbo chargers, fuel injection, FADEC controls, Nickel Silicon Carbide coated cylinders) is not only about products. There are multiple projects that will significantly impact the way we do business in the future. We are investing significantly in changing our support organization in order to exceed every industry standard for technical and sales support. This will not happen overnight, but we are aiming, in the relatively short term, to provide technical support to our customers wherever they are on the planet, 24/7, regardless of what type of engine they are calling about: Continental® Motors Gasoline, Continental® Motors Compression Ignition (Diesel) engines, Titan™ by Continental® Experimental engines. We will also provide answers to any question our clients could have on our parts, both for Continental® and Lycoming®* applications. The enhancement of our services goes in step with Continental® Motors building a green field factory in Mobile, Alabama. The design of the building (office

space and factory floor), is well underway and we are on schedule for completion by the end of 2018, as announced initially. This project is not just about moving out of buildings built before the Second World War. The essence of the project is to provide an environment where we can organize ourselves more efficiently, putting in place new production equipment and enhancing dramatically the way we manufacture engines. The automotive industry has paved the way for us. The progress made in terms of supply chain control and management, manufacturing techniques, industrial machines used for manufacturing, and also the quality monitoring processes that allowed that industry to make a quantum leap will all be present in our new factory. There is absolutely no reason that general aviation manufacturing should remain anchored in the 20th century. We are investing more than any general aviation company has in the recent past to modernize the production unit. That constitutes a warranty for our clients that they will be able to procure affordable products manufactured to the highest quality standards available. GAB: You have announced many new products this year, can you tell us more about them? KUEHN: Continental® Motors has made many announcements this year, not all related to products, but nonetheless significant. We have expanded our line

of FAA approved PMA cylinders for Lycoming®* engines. Continental® Motors is the only alternative source for angle valve cylinders used in many Lycoming®* applications (360, 540, and 720 families). Our range of cylinders is manufactured like all the OEM parts built in our factory, using the same high-quality materials, the same quality monitoring processes and benefit from the industry leading Continental® Warranty. On top of that, they are available with our optional NiC3™ surface treatment. This ceramic compound allows for wear and corrosion resistance in the cylinder barrel. It is especially important to owners and operators that do not fly as regularly as they wish. Continental® gives a warranty against corrosion or abnormal wear that covers the cylinder barrels, in addition to the standard warranty, for five years or TBO, whichever comes first. That’s unheard of in the industry. The NiC3™ surface treatment is available on Parallel and Angle Valve cylinders on Lycoming® engines and on most Continental® engines.

In addition to cylinders, Continental® manufactures all the PMA replacement parts necessary for overhaul or repairs on Lycoming® engines applications. Here, again, you need to refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations as a starting point. Lycoming recommends breaking in all naturally aspirated engines on straight mineral oil and all turbocharged engines on AD oil. (There are special requirements for the O-320H model engines.)

The biggest concern about break-in of the cylinder is glazing. This was more common with the old hard chrome cylinders when pilots would “baby” their new engines so as to not hurt them. The lack of adequate ring pressure and friction resulted in the rings not knocking off the little peaks left from honing, leaving more oil in the valleys, which can coke up, leaving a varnish or glazed surface. With a turbocharged engine there should be adequate cylinder pressure to seat the rings even if someone tries to "baby" their engine.

If after this third oil change, the oil temperature is down to normal range and the oil consumption has returned to normal, I would consider the engine to be broken in.

The difference is in the cylinder pressure required to produce adequate ring force against the freshly honed cylinder wall to wear in the surface.

Run this second change of oil for 10 to 15 hours and monitor the oil temperature and the engine performance. Then change the oil and filter and run this change for about 25 hours or so.

The second step is operation. If your new engine is from the factory or a large rebuild company that has a dynamometer, then the first step of the break-in has been completed. When new pistons and rings are installed, the coefficient of frictions is very high until the smoothing out of the cylinder wall is done. Much of this can be done on the dyno run. If this is a field overhaul, then the first few hours of the break-in will be done in the air. After these first few hours, change the oil and filter to get rid of all of the iron filings. This will have been done at the factory for a new engine.

Fuel

A final point is fuel. All of the test results and the experience of many people in the field indicate that it is very important to do the break-in period on a fuel with some lead content. For 80/87 engines with a proper STC, you can run a mixture of, say, 25% 100LL and 75% mogas. This will give you the same lead level as the original 80/87 fuel. I know people get tired of the "follow the manufacturer’s/rebuilder’s recommendations" line. But there are enough model to model variations that it is very critical to follow whatever recommendations the people who are warranting your particular engine give. Garmin has announce the touchscreen G500 TXi, G600 TXi and G700 TXi flight displays, as well as the engine information system (EIS) TXi. Boasting a clean-sheet touchscreen design and vibrant presentation, the TXi family incorporates greater situational awareness tools and an innovative feature set into a contemporary avionics platform.

Orient Flight School located in Chennai, India and Alsim signed a Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year: the flight school is now the official Demo Centre, with the objective to show all Alsim product’s in its academy. The simulator was installed this autumn. The EASA and FAA qualified AL250 simulator was launched in 2016 by Alsim in response to market demand. This compact FNPT II and AATD simulator addresses initial phase training needs (PPL, CPL, IR/ME) and is SEP/MEP reconfigurable.

Three displays are available, offering optimal flexibility for panel configurations. These include a large 10.6-inch display, and two versions of 7-inch displays, in portrait and landscape orientations.

Air BP Invests in Land’s End Airport

The 10.6-inch display can operate as a primary flight display (PFD), multi-function G500 TXi/G600 TXi display (MFD) and optional integrated EIS in a highly customized package, while the 7-inch portrait display can be dedicated to any one of those functions. The 7-inch landscape display is available exclusively as a dedicated EIS solution. • The G500 TXi system is intended for Part 23 Class I/II aircraft under 6,000 lbs. • The G600 TXi flight displays are intended for Class III aircraft that weigh up to 12,500 lbs. • The G700 TXi is exclusively for Part 23 Class IV and Part 25 aircraft that weigh greater than 12,500 lbs.

Air BP has completed a series of upgrades and enhancements to the fuel system at Land’s End Airport in the UK. The investment at Land’s End Airport includes the introduction of a 50,000-litre capacity Jet A-1 tank with a 110% concrete bund, a kerbside pump and associated filter units. First Woman Engineer in the ULPower Dealer Network

Patricia Mawuli Porter is the first woman to be factory trained in the installation and maintenance of ULPower Aero Engines. Patricia, and her husband Jonathan Porter, of Metal Seagulls Ltd, were looking at the option of using a ULPower engine for clients’ projects needing 120-130hp. They discovered that the ULPower engine has many features that would make it a great powerplant for a wide range of applications. Cape Air firms delivery schedule for first 20 of 100 Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft Tecnam announced the conclusion of an agreement with US-based commuter airline Cape Air on delivery schedule for the first 20 of 100 Tecnam P2012 Traveller aircraft. Negotiations were concluded following an extensive review of the configuration, direct and indirect cost analysis of the P2012 by key members of both the Cape Air and Tecnam leadership teams, including Dan Wolf â&#x20AC;&#x201C; CEO and Founder, Jim Goddard â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Senior Vice President, Fleet Planning and Acquisitions and Mike Migliore â&#x20AC;&#x201C; CFO of Cape Air. All-Party Parliamentary Group on General Aviation (APPG) visit Wycombe Air Park In the UK the APPG on General Aviation currently consists of more than 70 Parliamentary members from across all the major parties and both Houses of Parliament. Membership includes 7 ex-Cabinet ministers and 11 Privy Councillors. Following the recent change in regulations across Europe the need to keep open General Aviation (GA) airports becomes even more necessary into the future.

This was assisted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on GA visiting Wycombe Air Park to talk to businesses and airfield operators about the challenges facing the General Aviation sector, and how they can be overcome.

The APPG also heard about the worldwide shortage of pilots, and what the flight training school at Wycombe is doing to help produce world-class pilots.

A number of businesses at the Air Park spoke about the highly-skilled jobs they provide in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) roles. The APPG heard about the wide range of employment opportunities available at Wycombe, and how the regulatory move to

Blackhawk Obtains STC for XP67A Engine+ Upgrade for King Air 350 Blackhawk Modifications is pleased to announce that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified its new high-power XP67A Engine+ Upgrade for the King Air 350.

The certification process, which included 172 flight hours over 132 flights, was completed in just 14 months. Keys to the upgrade include two factory-new Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67A engines and new five-blade composite propeller assemblies and spinners from MT Propellers. Training, support, and a five year/2,500 hour enhanced new-engine warranty are also included. With XP76A certification complete, Blackhawk is turning its attention to its King Air 350ER program. The company is equipping a King Air 350ER with the XP67A Engine+ Upgrade, and is planning for certification at 16,500 maximum take-off weight (MTOW) later this year. The final phase of the project will consist of certifying a King Air 300 with the XP67A Engine+ Upgrade, starting early next year. Meanwhile, in Munich, Germany, GE engineers are conducting the ATP’s most significant tests to date - Axial-Centrifugal Compressor Vehicle (ACCV) tests - at GE’s European Technology Centre. The ATP’s stator, rotor, and cold section assemblies produce the ACCV test vehicle. More than 700 instrument gauges are hooked up to the vehicle so GE engineers can fully understand the ATP’s compressor design and validate efficiency, performance, and operability. The new 1,240shp-rated ATP is the first entry in GE’s new family of turboprop engines aimed at BGA aircraft in the 1,000-1,600shp range. It offers unparalleled performance and efficiency. The ATP features an industry-best 16:1 overall pressure ratio, enabling the engine to achieve as much as 20% lower fuel burn and 10% higher cruise power compared to competitor offerings in the same size class. At 4,000 hours, ATP offers 33% more time between overhaul than its leading competitor. The ATP engine was unveiled at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) Convention in November of 2015 and announced the engine was chosen to power another clean-sheet design, the new Cessna Denali. The third H160 prototype (PT3) performed its maiden flight at Airbus headquarters with its cabin interior configuration similar to that of a serial aircraft. PT3 will contribute to certification activities and flight testing to ensure the aircraft’s level of maturity ahead of entry into service in 2019. The first two prototypes have clocked more than 500 flight hours since the model’s maiden flight in June 2015. In that time, the flight envelope has already been fully tested and the domain has been opened. The remaining development activity, (for example complementary hot weather testing, antennas and optional equipment) will be done using all three aircraft. CHC said the AW189 is the first large helicopter in Australia to be designed to Maintenance Steering Group-3 processes, providing greater reliability and less maintenance man-hours. The operator introduced the AW189 and Airbus Helicopters H175 to its global fleet in July, launching its super medium aircraft program for operations in the North Sea and Australia. CHC aimed to use the long-range AW189s and H175s for missions that traditionally have been limited to heavy helicopters and to access offshore platforms that are not designed to support the heavier aircraft. The operator said it has operated Leonardo aircraft since 2005. That year, CHC took delivery of its first commercial AW139. It has now logged more than 125,000 flying hours across its global AW139 fleet, including operations in Australia. Beechcraft King Air 250

Eleven Aircraft Ordered for Norwegian Air Ambulance

Textron Aviation secured a fleet order from Babcock Scandinavian Air Ambulance for 11 aircraft, including the first medevac-configured Cessna Citation Latitude midsize jet and 10 Beechcraft King Air 250 turboprops. The aircraft will support Babcock’s contract with Air Ambulance Services of Norway to provide communities across Norway with vital air ambulance support. Babcock’s fleet of King Air 250 turboprops will feature CAT II capability, enabling operations in reduced visibility, and feature steep approach landing capability. They will also be equipped to operate in polar regions. Airbus Helicopters H145 pilots can now improve their safety performance in a level D full flight simulator. Coptersafety’s H145 simulator in Helsinki, Finland, has received EASA certification – within the originally planned schedule

Coptersafety, a Fast-growing Flight Training Service Provider. The Finnish Civil Aviation Authority has granted the simulator the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) level D certification. Level D is the highest level of full flight simulator qualifications available. "This is the first major milestone on Coptersafety’s journey of becoming the world’s leading training service provider. This is where our true training capabilities really can start. I am pleased to inaugurate the world’s most advanced H145 simulator, predictably on schedule, and to invite all H145 helicopter operators to improve the safety performance of their operations," said Mikko Dahlman, CEO, Coptersafety. "More precisely, I am proud to offer my fellow H145 pilots the best available training and bringing the entire industry’s safety development to a whole new level," Dahlman, also a H145 pilot, continues. Precision and punctuality are at the core of safety. The H145 simulator is delivered by TRU Simulation + Training, a subsidiary of Textron Inc. The Airbus Helicopters’ H145 is currently one of the best-selling light twin rotorcraft models. It is being widely operated in emergency medical services (HEMS), but also in passenger and corporate transport, and search and rescue (SAR) roles. However, there has been a lack of H145 level D simulators in the industry, so far. TRU was selected to deliver the simulator, as they convinced Coptersafety to be capable of delivering it on time.

The installation started in July 2017, and lasted for roughly three months, as originally planned. "Staying on schedule and delivering as promised is a matter of honour to us. Precision is at the core of our service, especially since our mission is to improve aviation safety. Finns are known for their punctuality and incorruptibility, so being rooted in Finland has many advantages," said Mikko Dahlman. Babcock Scandinavian Air Ambulance among their first clients One of Coptersafety’s first H145 simulator clients is Babcock Scandinavian Air Ambulance. "Babcock SAA is committed to improving the safety of its HEMS operations, without forgetting training efficiency. The certification of Coptersafety’s H145 full flight simulator brings a new, unique, high-quality option to the flight training community. We are excited for this opportunity and will benefit from the one-to-one supplemental equipment onboard, along with operational areas that include detailed hospital helipads," said Eetu Peuraniemi, Deputy Crew Training Manager, Babcock Scandinavian Air Ambulance. Airbus Helicopters has also formally handed over the first H145 for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity (MAAC) operated by Babcock Mission Critical Services (MCS).
