Why do Marketing and Aerobatics Blend so Well? GA Buyer Europe interviews Frank van Houten of Dutch Rush, to uncover his passion for aerobatic flying, and learn how his Sukhoi 26M is being used to excellent marketing effect. Discover more here... Having had his first flying experience in a glider at the age of 12, Frank van Houten of Dutch Rush Aerobatics obtained his Private Pilots’ Licence long before he could drive a car, and after being bitten by the aviation bug, he began a flying career in the Military with the Royal Netherlands Navy. Initially he flew Lynx helicopters positioned aboard Dutch Frigates in a variety of environments, including the Adriatic, Middle East and the Carribean, before moving into the cockpit of the P3C Orion, a four-engine Maritime patrol aircraft. Eventually he found his way into the civil aviation sector where he flew the Bombardier Global 6000 for the word’s largest Fractional Ownership organization. But it’s aerobatics that has always been an aviation passion for van Houten. “The performance and maneuverability of these aircraft gives you the feeling of ultimate freedom and a very thorough insight into what is aerodynamically possible,” he explains to GA Buyer Europe. “It provides endless challenges.” Aerobatics is an extreme sport with a lot of potential and no shortage of variation. “The manoeuvres these aircraft make, the agility, the engine sound and engine power, the eye catching paint schemes and smoke generators,” van Houten enthuses. “All of these are ingredients that capture attention. You can’t help but to stop and admire!

“Aircraft like the Sukhoi 26M are true eye-catchers. They’re capable of creating a real Wow-factor, making them very useful in marketing campaigns or at events. “Aerobatic aircraft are comparable to race cars or race bikes,” he elaborates. “They’re strong where neccessary, but they lack comfort to save weight – they’re actually very spartan inside.”
Finding the Perfect Aerobatic Plane
So how does one find the perfect aerobatic aircraft? According to van Houten, that can be an almost impossible task, but he adds that the Sukhoi 26M leaves little to wish for. “The balance and maneuverability of this aircraft are fantastic. “It’s almost impossible to fly the Sukhoi 26M straight and level. It just wants to move and not to do so almost feels like an insult to the designers.” But what exactly attracted van Houten to the Sukhoi 26M? “It’s a remarkable aerobatic aircraft in so many ways. The airplane is quite big compared to similar aircraft and has an eye catching paint scheme. “The design and performance enables the aircraft to perform at the world level. And the engine sound of the nine-cylinder Vedenyev radial engine is unique in its class. In comparison to other, similar aerobatic aircraft the Sukhoi has a distinct, impressive appearance. It’s a real eye-catcher, in the air and on the ground.”
Flying Displays
Frank flies his Sukhoi at displays throughout Europe both at regular airshows and non-aviation events, and he’s always looking to develop the type of display he offers. “To add to the experience, we can now also perform an optional twilight display with the use of pyrothechnics”, he reveals. “Imagine a quiet summer evening with no wind, an impressive engine sound and fireworks coming from the wingtips. It’ll definately leave a lasting impression!” This year at Aero Expo UK (June 14-16), attendees will be able to see Van Houten’s aircraft at the Bose Aviation stand. “I have been collaborating with Bose for many years now using their aviation headsets. Since last year Jeppesen also joined with the VFR Flitedeck. So both brands are featured prominently on the wings of the aircraft. “We will also have a simulator of the aircraft next to the real Sukhoi featuring the Bose A20 headsets and the Jeppesen VFR Flitedeck, so visitors will get a feel for what it’s like to actually fly the aircraft.” And of course, van Houten will be partaking in the flying display, showcasing exactly what the aircraft can do and what makes it so unique.
Aircraft as Marketing Tools
With Bose and Jeppesen logos featuring prominently on the 26M’s paint scheme, aerobatics is about far more than an advert or an event – van Houten is clear that it’s an experience. “Companies strive for long-term relationships with their customers (not just to reach the masses), and aviation and aerobatics can play an important role.” A good example of this kind of advertising can be seen in the latest ‘Why I Fly’ video made for Bose Aviation, in which Frank explains his passion for flying. “Experience Marketing is the future - it is the way to engage with your prospects,” he offers. “Regular advertising can become too much, too shallow, and become quite irritating –the audience can choose to block it out. With some creativity it’s possible to achieve much more, cost effectively - especially with use of the unique qualities aviation and aerobatics have to offer. This is the ultimate tool for ‘experience marketing’. An aircraft like the Dutch Rush Sukhoi are capable of evoking an emotion.” But don’t just take Frank van Houten’s word for it. Republic Airways has ordered a total of 50 Diamond DA40NG and DA42-VI aircraft to bolster the training fleet at its new Leadership in Flight Training (LIFT) academy in Indianapolis. It has also ordered Diamond flight simulators.

Emeric de Waziers, co-founder of Wingly, reports the app is “now in the UK, France and Germany, although by this we also mean Austria and Switzerland.” Germany, where Wingly started, is “still the leading market.” The company is based in Paris. Year-over-year growth in number of passengers flights has been around 200%, he said. In April 2017 there were 280 passenger flights and in April 2018 that grew to more than 800. De Waziers said France is now a success story after regulators became satisfied that Wingly could ensure its members’ flights were not commercial, and did not in any way make a profit. The DGAC approved the activity in June 2017 and Wingly now has an arrangement with the French Federation of Aero Clubs, the FFA. “France has been a real breakthrough,” noted de Waziers. The Air Charter Association (BACA) still has concerns, especially when Wingly is inviting visitors to its website and users of its app to request flights. See https://en.wingly.io/
First H3PS Meeting Held at Tecnam HQ In May the first meeting of the 36-month H3PS (High Power High Scalability Aircraft Hybrid Powertrain) initiative was held at the Capua headquarters of Italian manufacturer Tecnam, project coordinator. The European Commission and INEA agency is helping finance H3PS under the HORIZON 2020 Mobility for Growth program. Tecnam, BRP-Rotax and Siemens are leading H3PS and are to present a “performing alternative” to existing propulsion that will “dramatically reduce the environmental impact of today’s four seat [GA] aircraft.” Fabio Russo, head of R&D and product development of Tecnam and project manager of H3PS, said: “The project will introduce the most advanced technologies for all-electric aircraft and thus stimulate innovation.” www.h3ps.eu
L3 Commercial Training Solutions (L3 CTS) continues to expand the aircraft fleet at its European Airline Academy in Ponte de Sor, Portugal, which it established in January having purchased local ATO, G Air. It is taking the fleet up to 12 Diamond DA40Ds and four Cessna singles. Rebranding and improvements to the airfield with the help of an EU grant will mean it can eventually train 500 pilots a year. Students start out with VFR (PPL) training in Portugal and then go to L3’s UK Airline Academy in Southampton for ATPL theory and their CPL/Multi-Engine Instrument Rating flying. www.l3cts.com

Piper had an expanded presence at this year’s EBACE show in Geneva (29-31 May) with two M-class aircraft, an M600 turboprop single and M350 pressurized piston single, as well as a diesel-powered Archer DX single. “The European business aviation market presents a key growth opportunity for Piper Aircraft and our dealer partners,” said Ron Gunnarson, v-p of sales, marketing, and customer support. “With our continued focus on expanding international sales and with the advent of EASA approval of single-engine turbine commercial operations, the EBACE convention is the ideal venue for Piper to showcase its M-Class products in the European market.” In addition, Piper trainer orders have surged 88 percent over the past five years, and the backlog for the Archer training airplane is now into the third quarter of 2019. “Our 2018 trainer production is sold out,” Caldecott said. “As a manufacturer of training aircraft, we’re seeing the forecast becoming reality. “The pilot shortage is real.” www.piper.com

Aircraft Financing: How Does it Work? Unsurprisingly, it’s not something a typical high street bank would consider. So, once you’ve found a specialist lender, what can you expect? Andy Blundell (left) discusses the process at Close Brothers Asset Finance…
Arranging the financing for the purchase of private aircraft is usually a straightforward process. A basic transaction for a small personal or corporate aircraft may proceed as follows: -
Question: How are aircraft finance packages structured? Andy: Deciding how to finance an aircraft is a key component in the ownership process. Any good financier will work with its clients to understand the key drivers of each transaction, accounting for the proposed usage and maintenance cycle of the aircraft, together with the cash flow requirements of the borrower to offer a tailored and bespoke solution for each transaction. This isn’t just marketing speak. Because of the nature of General and Business Aviation, you cannot apply a ‘one-size-fitsall’ approach to transactions. Each deal is unique in its own right. The sheer variety of aircraft available is another factor to consider and is a primary reason why it’s important each opportunity is assessed individually. Our Aviation team has helped customers purchase thousands of aircraft, ranging from small flying club aircraft to mid-sized corporate jets, historic warbird aircraft, two seat private helicopters to large corporate and air ambulance helicopters. Facilities are usually structured over five to seven years, with final ‘balloon’ payments normally an option, depending on the customer requirements and the specific aircraft being financed. Facilities in sterling, Euro and US Dollars are available. Question: Typically, how does aircraft finance work at Close Brothers Asset Finance? Andy: The finance facilities are structured through a loan, with security by way of a mortgage over the aircraft; facility fees normally apply. The mortgage will be registered at the CAA or another national aviation authority. When lending to companies and limited liability partnerships (LLPs), Close Brothers also registers a mortgage with Companies House, and personal guarantees may be required.

The borrower provides information about themselves and their prospective aircraft to the lender. The lender performs an appraisal of the aircraft's value and undertakes its own internal credit analysis. Normally the lender would expect the borrower to undertake their own pre-purchase survey of the aircraft. The lender and borrower agree terms on the structure of the transaction. The lender performs a title search based on the aircraft's registration number to confirm that no liens or title defects are present. The lender then prepares documentation for the transaction, which includes dealing with the vendor, insurers, maintenance organisations and (where applicable) lawyers. At closing, the loan documentation is executed, and the funds are transferred.
Question: Is insurance required for aircraft or helicopters? Andy: Yes – all aircraft must be comprehensively insured, with the lender’s interest in the aircraft noted on the policy. Question: What type of aircraft are financed at Close Brothers Asset Finance? Andy: We can finance a wide range of aircraft, including light piston aircraft, turboprops, helicopters, executive corporate jets and air ambulances. We also finance vintage aircraft and are a strong supporter of historic aviation in the UK. Aircraft are usually registered in the UK, USA, the Isle of Man or Guernsey. We can finance brand new aircraft direct from the manufacturer, or pre-owned aircraft that are being sold from dealers, brokers or via private sale. And we can also consider refinancing aircraft that are already owned, to release capital for overhauls, upgrades, rebuilds or other purposes. What we can’t finance; however, are aircraft operated by major airlines and the Armed Services.

GAMA Reports Piston Market Flat, Like Jets www.gama.aero The General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) has reported that the piston market is â&#x20AC;&#x153;flatâ&#x20AC;? like the jet segment of the market, â&#x20AC;&#x153;with this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Q1 total of 200 units trailing last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 203 by 1.5%.â&#x20AC;? In the single-engine portion of the market, this year is down from last year at 162 units compared with 176 last year, a reduction of almost 8%. Of the 14 single-engine piston manufacturers listed, three had gains, seven had losses, three were even and one failed to report. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is Cirrus and then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s everybody else,â&#x20AC;? observed Mike Potts, aviation analyst; the Chinese-owned manufacturer led the market with 74 deliveries, up from 57 last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;an increase of almost 30%. In second place is Cessna, with 21 deliveries, down from 41 a year ago. This included one TTx, the single it bought from Lancair in 2007 to compete with the Cirrus SR-22 but has now discontinued.
Piper delivered 19 airplanes this quarter, up from 17 a year ago, and Italyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Tecnam â&#x20AC;&#x153;captured fourth placeâ&#x20AC;? with 15 units for the quarter, down from 19 last year. UK Military Aerodrome Sell-off Reviewed
The UKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s air navigation services provider, NATS, has invested almost â&#x201A;Ź60 million in ADS-B pioneer Aireon, giving it a 10% stake. Aireonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five other equity investors are Iridium Communications, Nav Canada, the Irish Aviation Authority, Italyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ENAV, and Denmarkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Naviair. Don Thomas, Aireon CEO, said NATSâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; investment will allow Aireon to begin paying Iridium Communications fees for hosting the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s space-based ADS-B transceivers on every low earth orbit Next satellite that Iridium launches. Aireonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s global Air Traffic Management surveillance service is due to become fully operational in 2019. The UK defence minister, Tobias Ellwood (who has an FAA PPL), has pledged to look again at the sell-off of 15 surplus UK military airfields for housing following discussions with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on General Aviation. The Minister and officials from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (the body responsible for the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s defence infrastructure) acknowledged that retaining at least some of these aerodromes for aviation use could be beneficial, not only to local economies, but also to potential future UK defence needs. Is Your Trustee Legitimate? Just because a Company has the name ‘Trust’ or ‘Trustee’ in it doesn’t mean they have authority to act as a Trustee. So how can you establish that they do have the authority? Aircraft Guaranty offers advice… It can be confusing when searching the market for a Trustee provider, as the cost of Trust services vary widely. Don’t be fooled into considering the lower cost alone. There is more to providing trust services than many people know. FAA Does not vet Trustees The hard truth is that many Trust Companies offering trust services are not legally authorized to do so. The FAA DOES NOT vet the entities applying for registration as a Trustee. By law, Corporate Trustees must be granted Trustee authority by either the state banking commissioner or by a court in the Company’s state of incorporation, AND their trust powers must be granted in their Articles of Incorporation. Unfortunately, the FAA DOES NOT demand verifiable state governmentissued proof of this authority. The result is that many companies with the words “Trust” or “Trustee” in their name are allowed to register aircraft in trust at the FAA, though they do not have the legal authority to do so.

Cost/Service Ratio Many Trust Companies try to compete on cost alone, but often these companies sacrifice service for cost leading to slow response times, delays in receiving legal ownership documents, and a general lack of professionalism in dealing with clients. How to Protect Yourself To protect yourself and your assets, be sure to ask the Trustee provider for written proof of state court confirmation or state bank commissioner granted Trustee power. And don’t be afraid to ask them about their capital reserve requirements and whether they have met them or not. Just because your Trust Company says they are a Trustee, don’t assume they have the authority to act as one.
Capital Requirements Furthermore, most valid Trust Companies are required to have US$500k to $1m in capital reserves with the state banking commissioner.
Be informed and educated, and don’t be afraid to ask the right questions. Remember, this is the safety of your money and your property so you have a right to know. Don’t be afraid to ensure that your Trust Company is Legitimate.

Alpi Aviation UK returns to AeroExpo UK this year with the Pioneer 300 Hawk, the Italian manufacturer’s updated aircraft built to a UK Light Aircraft Association (LAA) specification… Having unveiled the initial design of the aircraft at last year’s AeroExpo UK event, the 300 Hawk will be on static display at Wycombe Air Park, June 14-16, after undergoing the test flight phase at Alpi Aviation’s UK headquarters in Earls Colne (EGSR), which it shares with aircraft maintenance and refurbishment expert Cavendish Aviation. The UK specification of the Pioneer 300 Hawk meets all LAA requirements and includes a Rotax 912 iS engine. Alpi Aviation UK’s Managing Director Steve Allen says, “We’re looking to revolutionise the light sport market with a quality product and first-class support.” Pilots can buy the UK range of Pioneer aircraft in a fast kit-build format across three models, including the Pioneer 200 VLA, Pioneer 300 Hawk and Pioneer 400 which allows four seats and luggage space.

Pilatus Hands PC-24 Over to Peter Brabeck-Letmathe Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, former Chairman and CEO of the Nestlé Group, accepted the keys to his PC-24, serial number 104, becoming one of the very first owners to fly the brand-new Swiss business jet. Businessman and experienced pilot Peter Brabeck-Letmathe personally took delivery of his PC-24, ordered in 2013, from Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of Pilatus, at a handover ceremony in Stans, Switzerland. Flying is Mr Brabeck-Letmathe’s big passion having logged over 3,000 hours so far. Brabeck-Letmathe attracted attention a year ago with the announcement that his new PC-24 would be purchased by his company, Brabair, and would be made available to private and business travellers in Europe, together with his existing PC-12 NG, within a newly founded ‘Flying Club 24’. “It’s been worth the wait, my serial number 104 looks just fantastic,” said Brabeck-Letmathe at the handover. “I’ve been totally convinced by the PC-24 project since the earliest days. It’s a logical continuation of the Pilatus product family. “The cockpit environment is exceptional within this category and the quality of the workmanship is exactly as one would expect from a Swiss product. I’m really looking
forward to taking the pilot’s seat and getting familiar with the unique capabilities of my Super Versatile Jet.” The PC-24 will be based in Sion, and the Brabair Super Versatile Jet will carry seven passengers plus pilot in a luxurious, ergonomic environment. The large cargo door which comes as standard allows easy loading and unloading of large items of luggage and bulky cargo. The PC-24’s short take-off and landing capabilities also open up new possibilities in terms of arriving closer to the final destination, thereby saving valuable time. Indeed, organisations such as the U.S. government (with their U-28A version of the PC-12), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Australian Royal Flying Doctors rely on Swiss engineering for rugged dependability, since the PC-12 was first introduced. What is it that makes these aircraft such a success? Perhaps two often overlooked factors are residual value and service / maintenance philosophy and Pilatus has been voted number one for service yet again, for the sixteenth consecutive year, by Professional Pilot Magazine. This success is largely due to the confluence of Pilatus’ quality airframe, with a proven powerplant and the fact that many operators of the PC-12’s highly acclaimed Pratt and Whitney Canada’s PT6A engine have successfully undergone life development programmes to extend hot section inspection intervals and engine overhaul lives by significant margins, highlights this engine’s proven record of durability and reliability.

In addition, Pilatus and Pilatus Centres worldwide are highly disciplined in their ‘no-discount’ culture, which further protects our customers’ asset’s value. The aircraft is priced at the correct level for the market and Pilatus manufacture what the Pilatus Centres order, thereby minimising excessive levels of stock at any one time with its ensuing negative effect on prices and residual values.
Furthermore, one of the key attributes of PC-12 success is its low operating costs and Pilatus is constantly committed to continue striving to reduce these, for its customers. For this reason, they have recently announced an extension of scheduled maintenance intervals from 100/150 hours to 300 hours. This will result in a reduction of required maintenance labour by 20% for operators flying around 300 hours per year, to up to 40% for high-utilisation operators, flying 800 hours per year. This translates to less down-time and fewer shop visits and allows for greater utilisation of our customers’ assets. Operators may now also package scheduled maintenance tasks to suit their own, unique operations, which allows for even greater flexibility.

Honda Unveils “Elite” Honda Aircraft has unveiled an upgraded version of its HA-420 HondaJet. Announcing the plans at the EBACE business aviation show in Geneva at the end of May, the Japanese manufacturer said the HondaJet Elite would have additional range (increased by 214 nautical miles, to 1,437nm) and a quieter cabin thanks to noise attenuating engine inlets.

“We had a lot of interest in the aircraft at AERO Friedrichshafen [in April],” noted Edwin Brenninkmeyer, CEO of Oriens Aviation. “It is a show that goes from strength from strength for us,” he added. Sales director Craig Lammiman added that the business is seeing increased interest from existing and potential customers about connectivity and WiFi installations – on both new units and retrofits. Meanwhile, Oriens’ new Service Centre at Biggin Hill, Oriens Maintenance Services, which complements its sales activity with MRO support, plus warranty work, AOC and pilot training advisory, has had a good start since its formal opening in February. It has performed one annual inspection, a couple of 100-hour checks, handled a few AOG situations and has a healthy number of forward bookings for maintenance over the next few months, said the company. As GA Buyer Europe closed for press, PC-12 owners were preparing for the annual convention of the Pilatus Owners and Pilots Association (POPA) in New Orleans, 7-9 June.

Pilatus Lessens PC-12 Maintenance Burden
Business Aviation traffic bounced back in April with a 5% YoY increase, according to WingX Advance, after a slowdown in March.
Stans, Switzerland-based Pilatus Aircraft has announced a new PC-12 Master Maintenance Plan, reducing required maintenance man-hours by 20-40%.
Traffic improved in France, the UK, Switzerland and Germany (the latter seeing activity jump 11% in April) and is up 4.8% through the first four months of the year. Overall, charter flights saw a 6% increase, and private flights a 4% increase in April. Turboprop flights enjoyed the greatest gains during April, up 7% YoY, while the business jet segment was up by 4%. Super-midsize business jets marked the strongest growth (up 20% YoY), reflecting the rejuvenation of fractional fleets, according to WingX. Small jet flights climbed by more than 10% in France, Germany and Switzerland, offsetting declines in Italy and Spain. www.wingx-advance.com

GE Tests Catalyst Engine For Denali GE Aviation has started the certification test program for its newly-named Catalyst engine that will power the Cessna Denali single-engine turboprop, which is due to enter service in 2020. A PC-24 at EBACE.
Meanwhile Pilatus is to increase the production rate for its new PC-24 jet to 40 next year and 50 in 2020. It has delivered the first four, with around 23 due to roll off the production line this year. Quest Aircraft has launched an upgraded version of its Kodiak single-engine turboprop aircraft. The $2.1m list-price Series II (Kodiak II) will feature Garmin G1000 NXi avionics and a two-year subscription to Garmin Pilot. Attention to the airframe includes features designed to reduce cabin noise, while the aircraft’s Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 engine now includes a chip detector in the accessory gearbox. Safe Flight’s angle of attack indexer has been added, with an indicator mounted in the pilot’s field of view. A single digital fourin-one standby instrument is included. Cedar City, Utah-based SyberJet Aircraft has started ground testing the SJ30i in preparation for the revamped light business jet’s first flight in Q3 this year. The $8.3m, Williams International FJ44-2Apowered SJ30i is an upgraded version of the SJ30-2, which was certificated in 2005 by its former owner, Emivest Aerospace. Four examples were delivered and remain in service today. The program was acquired in 2011 by SyberJet’s parent company MTI, whose subsidiary Metalcraft Technologies was the aft fuselage supplier. The SJ30i's flight-test campaign is expected to take a year to complete and will involve around 250 hours of flying. The company hopes to get an amendment to the type certificate in mid-2019 with first delivery soon afterwards. www.syberjet.com

Italy’s Piaggio Aerospace, which was acquired by Abu Dhabi, UAE-based Mubadala in 2014, said its new five-year plan unveiled in December has already led to positive results with sales of its $7.7 million Avanti Evo turboprop twin picking up, and plans to gradually increase production. As of late May there were 20 aircraft in various stages of assembly on Piaggio's production line in Villa d’Albenga, Italy, including 12 Avanti Evos. The other eight airframes are Hammerhead P.1HH unmanned variants destined for the UAE armed forces. More than 230 P.180 Avantis are now in service worldwide, 10 of which are the new-generation Evos. Meanwhile the company has partnered with Walterboro, South Carolina-based LowCountry Aviation to develop an STC for upgrading the P.180 Avanti I turboprop twin with the Magnaghi Aeronautica main and nose landing gear (featuring digital steering system) developed for the current Avanti Evo. The FAA STC should be available by the end of 2018, with EASA approval expected later. Piaggio has also unveiled its 100th anniversary logo. The company dates back to Rinaldo Piaggio S.p.A in Genoa in 1884, but was officially established in 1918.
Of this total, 56.8% were accounted for by the retrofit market, while forward-fit sales accounted for the remaining 43.2% sales. Daher Preps For Wider Adoption of SETs Daher was at the EBACE show in Geneva in May to promote single-engine turboprop for commercial operations now EU regulations allow so-called ‘SET-IMC’. “These European regulations…open up new market opportunities for the TBM, including the latest TBM 910 and TBM 930 versions,” said Nicolas Chabbert, senior vice president of the Daher’s Airplane Business Unit. He noted that already TBM commercial operators in Europe had increased their activity, especially in France “where labor strikes have impacted the scheduled air transport sector.” TBM continues to improve its aircraft. Its 2018 aircraft have an improved pilot interface including backlighting on the cockpit’s central console to provide enhanced visibility at night. Additionally, a high-fidelity microphone has been incorporated into the pilot’s oxygen mask for clear communications with ATC when the mask is in use. At EBACE Daher was also demonstrating the functionality of its new “Me & My TBM” app. The Tarbes, France-based company said it is now planning for Oshkosh in July. “Looking to the second half of 2018, ‘longevity’ will be one of our themes at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in – where we’ll be exhibiting an aircraft that represents a true milestone in the TBM’s production run, while also celebrating the 30th anniversary of the TBM’s first flight in July 2008,” said Chabbert.

The company says it is “working with a number of aircraft manufacturers.” “BRS Aerospace is at the early stages of creating technology that could make eVTOL aircraft a reality,” said BRS Aerospace president Enrique Dillon. BRS Aerospace was represented at Uber Elevate as one of four critical gap technologies necessary for the successful development of the eVTOL ecosystem. ForeFlight Approaches European Launch Nav-app provider ForeFlight attended the EBACE show in Geneva in June to demo its navigation application, long popular in the USA, to attendees at Europe’s biggest business aviation event. “Homebriefing” Makes Flight Planning Easy Austro Control and Frequentis have reported a successful first few months of filing flight plans using its new Homebriefing service, launched last December. Austrian airports have been equipped with self-briefing terminals. The system draws data from the European AIS Database (EAD), which is operated by Frequentis on behalf of Eurocontrol. “By basing the system on the European AIS Database we were able to develop a more cost-effective system, which allows us to provide our briefing services free of charge to our customers,” said Thomas Hoffmann, Austro Control COO. Frequentis has been working with Austro Control for more than 60 years, its first job being to install voice communication equipment at Vienna Airport. www.homebriefing.com
Finland Added to Openflightmaps Finland is the latest country to have been added to Openflightmaps, taking the total to 18. With Finland the openflightmaps project reached into the Arctic Circle, the furthest north of all of the territories supported. Finland’s openflightmaps are developed and maintained in co-operation with AOPA Finland. AOPA Finland has agreed with Pocket FMS Foundation that EFIN openflightmaps will be available soon for free download and use in the EasyVFR application. AOPA Finland teamed up over four years ago with PocketFMS Foundation. Alsim Sells Sims to Aéropyrénées Alsim has sold an ALX device and an AL250 to Aéropyrénées, a flight school located in Perpignan, South of France. The school has owned an Alsim AL200 MCC device since 2006. The AL250 will be based at Toussus-le-Noble, an airfield near Paris, where Aéropyrénées opened a base in 2012. Benjamin Vanlierde, Aéropyrénées communication & marketing manager, said: “We were very satisfied with the quality of the sim we had been using until now, and with the maintenance service offered by Alsim. After comparing several manufacturers, we naturally came back to Alsim to expand our simulator fleet, but also to maintain a certain uniformity of our training tools. Furthermore, the ALX allows us to train MCC/ JOC: we are able to offer a comprehensive package to our students.” The company operates various types: Piper Seneca, Socata TB-9 and TB-20, among others. Garmin Pilot on iOS Improved Garmin has added new features to Garmin Pilot for Apple iOS devices, with for example a weather feature that allows storm cell movements to be shown in the radar overlay, along with icing information (levels and probability / severity of icing). It also has airspace alerting and better displaying of traffic, and runway extended centerlines. In addition, SiriusXM Aviation Weather subscribers can view the surface analysis layer on their moving map so that the display shows how weather might affect a flight. MT Receives Rockwell Commander STC Atting, Germany-based MT-Propeller has obtained an EASA STC for the installation of a three-blade composite propeller on Rockwell Commander 112 turbocharged models. The FAA STC is in progress, the company said. MT-Propeller vice president Martin Albrecht said the propeller has excellent vibration damping characteristics, requires no engine modifications, and reduces ground roll and takeoff distance requirements over a 50foot obstacle by approximately 90m (295ft). Climb performance is “slightly improved” and the cruise is smooth with “no speed penalty.” In addition, the propeller is 13 kg (29 lbs) lighter than the original three-blade metal propeller, and is quieter. Jewers Installs Doors at Solent Airport Another six GA hangars have been completed at Solent Airport in the UK. Five hangars, dedicated to GA aircraft, were opened in December 2017 as the local authority (and airport owner since 2015), Fareham Borough Council, pushes ahead with plans to develop the airfield to attract more aviation and aerospace businesses. The total for the 11 hangars was £6.1 million. “Our aim is for Solent Airport to become an attractive destination for visiting aircraft, but also offer the hangarage, facilities and services to attract more corporate and commercial aviation activities,” said Andy Wannell, director of finance and resources

The FAST solution captures and analyzes full-flight engine and aircraft data, enabling high visibility on a multitude of key operating parameters within 15 minutes of the pilot shutting down the engine, which can be used to optimize maintenance planning and operations and further increase aircraft availability. PlaneSense, a US fractional ownership provider, will launch the FAST solution on its fleet of PC-12 NG aircraft. The FAST solution is certified on the Beechcraft King Air 200/300 series, Textron Aviation’s Cessna Caravan 208/208B as well as Air Tractor platforms. Honeywell has introduced a new flight data monitoring iPad app for helicopter operators equipped with Sky Connect Tracker III systems. The Sky Connect FDM app can be used to configure data alerting and recording, in accordance with new helicopter air ambulance regulations. Sky Connect allows ground maintenance and operations teams to easily download and view recorded flight data on their iPads. The Sky Connect Tracking System uses the Iridium satellite network’s voice, tracking and messaging functions. uAvionix Offers Affordable ADS-B Dallas Avionics has started to take preorders for its soon-to-be-certified uAvionix skyBeacon, allowing owners of certified aircraft to upgrade them to ADS-B. The skyBeacon offers wing-tip mounted ADS-B OUT with WAAS GPS and LED position and anti-collision strobe lights, and os designed to be paired with an existing Mode C transponder. “The skyBeacon offers owners of light aircraft a cost effective, ADS-B solution that is easy to install and also provides nice LED navigation and anti-collision lighting as a value add,” said Dallas Avionics sales representative Scott Edwards. Installation time is expected to be less than 15 minutes and the introductory retail price is $1,849. Helicompany: It is a fantastic way to travel about the UK, the increased speed, performance and ease of use have made traveling much more enjoyable and stress free. GA Buyer: Compared to other helicopters you’ve flown, what is it like to fly? Are there any noticeable characteristics about the Bell 505 that have surprised you?
It offers a 125kts maximum cruise speed and capability for 1,500lbs useful load. Operators can enjoy a range of up to 306 nautical miles.
Helicompany: The Bell 505 is an amazing helicopter for the pilot, it is very easy to operate and has an enormous amount of power.
Versatility at its Core
The reliability, speed, performance and manoeuvrability of the Bell 505 is integrated with a flat floor, open cabin that is configurable for a wide variety of missions and payloads. The spacious cabin can be configured to carry up to four passengers or for internal cargo missions by removing quick disconnect rear cabin seats and/or co-pilot seat.
The seats are much more comfortable than the old JetRanger and the visibility for both the pilots and passengers is fantastic. GA Buyer: And how about passenger comfort – how would you say the Bell 505 ranks? Helicompany: The passenger seats are comfortable and there is lots of legroom. The visibility from the back seats is fantastic.
The Bell 505’s flat floor cabin design and large rectangular baggage compartment lets the Bell 505 adapt to changing mission needs very easily, and these features combined with a reliable drivetrain and rotor system make the Bell 505 an excellent multi-mission aircraft in the short light single-engine market.
GA Buyer: What are some of the missions the Bell 505 has flown for you since you had it delivered? Helicompany: We flew the 505 from Yorkshire to Jersey in around 2.5 hours with four people and luggage. The great thing is, we were able to take full-fuel so we only had to stop for fuel once.
GA Buyer: Helicompany is the proud operator of a new Bell 505. As an ‘early adopter’ in the UK, what is it about the Bell 505 that led you to purchase this aircraft?
The helicopter cruised comfortably at 125 knots and made the trip so easy and enjoyable.
Helicompany: As an operator of a Bell 206 for over 10 years, we were keen to update our aircraft and the Bell 505 was an easy choice for us.
GA Buyer: Are there any plans to expand the types of missions your Bell 505 flies in the future?
The new technology as well as the speed, power and performance was what made the Bell 505 stand out. It is unbeatable.
Helicompany: In the future we would like to put the 505 onto an Air Operators Certificate so we can provide a charter service with the aircraft.
GA Buyer: And having placed the Bell 505 in operation, how is it helping you to deliver on your objectives better?

Kopter Receives Aerosuisse Award Kopter has been granted this year’s Aerosuisse Award for its pioneering role in the construction of the first new and innovative light helicopter in Switzerland. Maintenance Check Flight Training at Ruag RUAG Aviation test pilots have started to train other Swiss pilots for helicopter Maintenance Check Flights (MCF), which will be subject to EASA regulation for the first time from 2019. “Maintenance Check Flights are a critical aspect of the safety process for all aircraft. As a centre of excellence in this specific area, we have considerable expertise and resources to contribute,” states Heinz Scholl, senior vice president military aviation, RUAG Aviation. In 2019 EASA will introduce regulations for MCF, clearly defining pilot requirements and applying stringent procedures to the testing process for helicopters and other complex platforms. www.ruag.com

RUAG Aviation was named as one of the first helicopter services providers in Europe to earn OEM approvals for MRO on the new Bell Helicopter 505 (JRX). RUAG also holds reassembly capabilities. “We are dedicated to providing complete, state-of-the-art support on behalf of our customers and all the helicopters in their fleet. Attending the first available technical courses, like the recent instruction for the Bell 505, is essential to this approach,” states Claudio Zeiter, Team Leader Commercial Helicopter Services, RUAG Aviation. The completion of the Bell Helicopter Training Academy course also allows RUAG to reassemble the new Bell helicopter. The importance of reassembly services becomes evident during the Bell 505 order process. Helicopters are shipped, partially dissembled. While Bell completely assembles and hands over the helicopters at its North America facilities, the helicopter is then separated into airframe, tail boom, main rotor blades and transmission for shipping to Europe.
“The reassembled helicopters require testing and the certificate of release to service. We encourage all Bell 505 customers in Europe to direct the shipping of their new helicopter to our facilities in Sion, Switzerland. Our trained specialists ensure a reliable and prompt reassembly,” confirms Zeiter. Subsequent to training at the Bell Helicopter Training Academy, the RUAG helicopter services center earned the approval ratings for the Bell 505 under its European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Part 145 classification. A Center of Excellence for helicopters, the team at the facility performs all maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services on the Bell 505 and additional support services required before start of operation. The Bell Helicopter 505 (JRX) will be presented at the RUAG facility in Sion as part of the aircraft’s European launch tour.
