Today Reiner Stemme Utility Air-Systems GmbH (RS-UAS) develops and produces a new generation of aircraft for special missions. The composite aircraft is called Q01 and is designed for surveillance, monitoring and exploration flights. Within only 18 months a team of engineers has brought the Q01 from first drafts to serial standard. In November 2015 Q01 took off for its maiden flight.

Meanwhile the engineers are working on another aircraft: SK202 Geoexplorer is smaller and lighter than the Q01, but not less versatile. It is powered by a 180 hp (132 kW) diesel engine for even lower operating costs. SK202 will be a specialist for all kinds of exploration and observation. First deliveries shall take place in 2018.

Q01 is extraordinary versatile: It is designed both as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and conventional aircraft with one or two pilots on board. During unmanned missions, it may operate in altitudes up to 30.000 ft. It fulfills the EASA CS-23 and FAA rules for IFR operated single engine piston aircraft – that’s required for manned flights in civil airspace. Thanks to 1.000 kg payload, the Q01 may carry an enormous amount of equipment. This contains a wide range of electronic and optical sensor systems as well as transmission technology. “One of the seven wonders of the aeronautical world”: That’s how Reiner Stemme’s first touring motorglider Stemme S10 was called when it was introduced back in 1986. Even today Reiner Stemme’s designs are still being considered as some of the best aerodynamic concepts in the world. Several world records were set with his aircraft and many research missions, for instance in the Andes Mountains and Himalaya, were flown. In 2013, Reiner Stemme founded RS-UAS in the Wildau-based Aviation and Space Center – and a new era of unmanned airborne systems has begun.

Reiner Stemme Utility Air-Systems is not only a specialist for military applications and government tasks. The company based in Wildau, close to Berlin, also sets its focus on General Aviation. With the introduction of the brand-new elfin at AERO, Reiner Stemme recollects on his roots: His career began with the design of outstanding motorgliders. SK10.e elfin is his latest design, a high-performance glider with 20 meters of wing span. The side-by-side doubleseater will be available in three different versions. They all have the electric propulsion in common – but each one has its unique qualities.

has very low operating costs. With its efficient propulsion the Q01 offers up to 50 hours endurance in unmanned mode. The 6-cylinder engine delivers 310 hp (228 kW) and burns Jet A-1 or Diesel. Needless to say that stealth attributes are an important aspect on many special missions. That’s why the exhaust system is designed for as less heat emission as possible. The airframe itself has a very low radar signature. Co-developer and first customer of the Q01 is the State of Qatar. Based on the given specifications, the prototype is equipped for border patrol flights. Other countries are also interested in the Q01. Police in London in mid-April were investigating after an object – reported to be a drone – struck the nose of a British Airways jet over Heathrow in what is believed to be the first case of its kind. The pilot of flight BA727 from Geneva, carrying 132 passengers and five crew members, reported the aircraft had been struck shortly before landing at the airport at 13.31 local time. Although the aircraft – Airbus A320 G-EUYP – landed safely and was later cleared for its next flight to Aberdeen, it has renewed calls for more to be done to curb drone use amid a quadrupling of near-misses involving drones and aircraft in the UK in recent months. Helicopter operations would also be directly affected by this, particularly as they routinely operate at low levels, well within the range of today’s drone technology. The CAA gave a statement saying they were “aware of a possible incident with a drone at Heathrow” and used the opportunity to reiterate the rules for operating drones. This included “It is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment”, and that incidents such as this the CAA would receive a report from an airline within 96 hours. ■ The CAA has a “drone code” at www.caa.co.uk/droneaware

The UK Search and Rescue Helicopter Service has operated out of Lydd Airport on a temporary basis since August 2015. The decision to make this arrangement permanent will enable the operators, Bristow Helicopters Ltd, to push ahead with plans to build a new £7 million search and rescue helicopter hangar at the airport.

The MHCC project utilises SeaPlanner’s latest enhancements that set out to centralise, standardise, automate and make equipment easily deployable and support far offshore projects in order to save cost and ensure safety from day one for the people working offshore.

The new hangar will house 2 state-of-the-art search and rescue helicopters that will operate a lifesaving service around the clock.

Electric multicopter – the Volocopter VC200.

The premiere of manned flights with the world’s first certified multicopter, e-volo’s Volocopter VC200, marks the beginning of a new era in urban mobility. The Volocopter is a personal aerial vehicle that is so easy and safe to fly, literally anyone can command it. Due to its electric propulsion, it has no exhaust emissions and is impressively quiet. For the first time humans’ dream of personal flight as a daily routine becomes attainable. As such it not only offers more widespread use in conventional aircraft domains, but brings us another step closer to air taxi services and entire transportation systems in the third dimension. Surrey and Sussex Police have acquired four new state-of-the-art drones. The Aeryon SkyRangers will add to the existing one which has been used to support policing operations at Gatwick since March 2014. The drones – also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) – are designed to be used to safeguard people and to assist with the investigation of crime. They are capable of operating during daylight and after dark, in high wind and heavy rain, and can reach speeds of about 30mph.

Atlantic Airways latest AW139 delivered early April

Atlantic Airways takes delivery second new AW139.

Faroe Islands operator Atlantic Airways took delivery of the second of the pair of AgustaWestland AW139s that they ordered on April 7. The aircraft will be used to perform Search and Rescue missions and scheduled passenger transportation within the Faroe Islands. The helicopters replace two Bell 412s. This follows the delivery of their first new AW139 OY-HIH in December 2015. FAA projects sales of up to 2.5 million UAS in 2016, growing to 7 million annually in 2020. Working with consultancy Teal Group, FAA developed its UAS forecast based, in part upon the requirement that all UAS weighing between 0.55 and 55 pounds be registered with the FAA before they can legally operate. Registration began in mid-December, and about 410,000 had been registered by mid-March.

- Smaller UAS - costing an average of $2,500 - Larger UAS that cost an average of $40,000 In a separate forecast that focuses on the potential impact of the new rule, and is therefore more conservative, the FAA said the commercial UAS fleet should approach 550,000 in 2020, including 52,000 in the more expensive category. The FAA said the commercial UAS fleet’s most prevalent roles will include industrial inspection (42%), real estate/aerial photography (22%), agriculture (19%) and insurance (11%). Exactly how quickly the fleet grows, however, will be tied to both the development pace and flexibility of the new rules.

UK – Surrey and Sussex Police increase drone fleet from one to five

Surrey and Sussex Police have been awarded almost £250,000 to fund the high-security devices. The new equipment means the project is the largest of any force in the UK.

The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) fleet will mushroom throughout the rest of the decade, aided by new FAA rules and emerging roles for business use of unmanned aircraft, according to the FAA’s latest forecast.

Garmin has announced the new features and capabilities that are now available within the GTN 650/750 touchscreen series for select helicopters on the market. New and existing customers can receive these features by contacting an authorized Garmin dealer.

Meanwhile, the FAA is developing its first small UAS rule. It will govern commercial UAS operations, including (eventually) operations beyond visual line of sight, which is not permitted now.

Electric multicopter – the Volocopter VC200 – makes first manned flight

The Department for Transport has announced that Lydd Airport will be the permanent base for the UK Coastguard’s search and rescue helicopter services in the south-east.

In a contract awarded by DONG Energy (DE), SeaPlanner was confirmed as the system provider for their Marine and Helicopter Coordination Centre (MHCC), acting as a centralised hub for their UK offshore wind farm construction and a number of regional Operations MHCCs.

Bond re-brands to Babcock

WireAware WireAware graphically overlays power line location and relative altitude information on the moving map and terrain pages. Powerlines are depicted in colours corresponding to their height relative to the helicopters’ altitude so it’s easy to identify powerlines that may pose a threat.

British based operator Bond is finally rebranding its operations to the corporate image of parent company Babcock. This is just short of two years since the announcement mid May 2014 that engineering support services company Babcock International Group PLC officially completed its acquisition of the Avincis Group.

Name for second MD Explorer announced by UK - London Air Ambulance Four year old Ethan from Hornchurch is one of the lucky winners to name one of our helicopters. The winning name is ‘Rowan’ after his two year old sister.

All aspects of Bond in the UK are being rebranded, both the offshore fleet with Bond Offshore Helicopters and the onshore fleet under the Bond Air Services banner. While today – Monday 25th April – is the date of the legal name change, it will be some months before everything from helicopters and signage to uniforms will finally all feature the Babcock name and brand – although the signage at the base at Gloucestershire Airport was sorted on Friday 22nd – see below.

On a visit to our helipad at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel last week, Ethan and his sister got to see the chosen name. The name has been placed on one London Air Ambulance of our helicopters, the named “Rowan”. G-EHMS registered MD902 Explorer. Ethan’s chosen name, and winning reason, is as follows: Rowan (G-EHMS) “Rowan is my sister’s name and the ancient meaning of Rowan is ‘little red one’ so seeing as the helicopters are red, it’s an ideal name. Plus my daddy raises money for London’s Air Ambulance.”

It was celebrations for Germany as Matthias Dolderer took a stunning victory at the Red Bull Ring, taking a home race win out of the hands of Hannes Arch. With Qualifying winner Velarde out of the running in the Round of 14, and a shock exit in the Round of 8 from Matt Hall, it was up to McLeod, Arch, Dolderer and Lamb to decide the Spielberg podium. The times were fast, and four error-free flights from the pilots made for a nail-biting final in the second round of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship. McLeod was first out on the track in the Final 4, setting the bar high with one of his fastest performances of the day with 57.598. Hannes Arch had put the memory of a disastrous 2015 home race appearance behind him, as he stalked his way into the track on the hunt for a home win. Arch put in a super-fast and precise performance, surpassing McLeod in the splits and showing no signs of carrying the weight of expectation from local fans as he blazed a decisive trail through the racetrack, finishing with 57.336 on the clock and taking the top spot on the timesheets. Matthias Dolderer was next to fly, and had shown great confidence all week on the Styrian racetrack. The German pilot appeared cool, calm and collected as he blasted through the Start Gate, clearly on a mission to take the race win and showing no mercy to the local fans backing Arch. Dolderer maintained full-throttle speed and an error-free, almost faultless performance together with some beautiful lines in his vertical turns which saw him nudge Arch off the number one spot. With a 0.340s advantage, Dolderer clocked in at 56.996, with only Nigel Lamb left to take a race victory from the German.

Helsinki City Council recently came out strongly in favour of Helsinki’s Malmi Airport (EFHF) remaining in use for aviation, and the Helsinki City Board followed suit by voting for the initiative at its meeting on 30th March 2016. The initiative’s arguments were not challenged but while some councillors (who had familiarized themselves with the matter) were strongly in favour of keeping the airport, others gave less well-informed opinions. For example, it was suggested (wrongly) that officials would ban residential building if

aviation activities were to continue; and also they suggested that there were no international flights at Malmi in the year 2015. In fact there have been hundreds of such flights to and from the EU, Russia and elsewhere, and these are still continuing. AOPA Finland is supporting the continuation of EFHF in aviation use and says that it has a significant number of members operating at Malmi airport. I More information visit -

Before landing, the aircraft performed a fly-by over the Golden Gate Bridge. "I crossed the bridge. I am officially in America," Mr Piccard declared as he flew over the iconic span. The ‘plane normally flies at around 28mph (45kph) but can reach double that speed when the sun's rays are strongest. The wings of the carbon-fibre aircraft stretch wider than those of a Boeing 747 and are covered with 17,000 solar cells that power propellers and charge batteries. It runs on stored energy at night.

The aircraft - with wings wider than a Boeing 747 and a speed of around 28mph - took more than two days to reach California. A solar-powered aircraft has completed a crossing of the Pacific Ocean after a 62-hour non-stop flight.

The Solar Impulse 2 arrived in Hawaii in July but was forced to stay in the islands after the plane's battery system sustained heat damage on its trip from Japan.

Pilot Betrand Piccard landed Solar Impulse 2 in Mountain View outside San Francisco after travelling from Hawaii on the latest stage of his journey around the world. The plane set off from Abu Dhabi in March last year and has made stops in Oman, Myanmar, China and Japan. But the Pacific leg was the most dangerous part of the journey because of the lack of places to make a landing in an emergency.

On May 2, in Seattle, pilot Tracey Curtis-Taylor put on her leather helmet, leather gloves, and leather flying jacket, and climbed into the “Spirit of Artemis”, her fully restored 1942 open-cockpit Boeing biplane. Rarely seen in the skies these days, Boeing Stearmans are typically the stuff of nostalgic air shows—or seen buzzing after Cary Grant in 1959's North by Northwest. Curtis-Taylor has a grander plan for this plane: On a journey that will culminate May 30 in Boston, she will have flown roughly three hours a day down the West Coast over Big Sur, San Francisco, and the Grand Canyon. Up through Albuquerque, New Mexico—and sometime after Wichita, Kansas—she’ll pick up the old airmail routes Charles Lindbergh flew before he took on his famous Atlantic crossing in 1927. The flying, Curtis-Taylor says, will be sensational. Continental Motors Group, announced at Aero that had raised the TBR (time between replacement) of its Diesel CD-100 series engines to 2,100 hours. This lifetime increase affects all CD135 and CD-155 engines manufactured since December 1st, 2015, incorporating revision status 2 design changes. Continental continues to invest in research, development and production quality enhancements, said Jürgen Schwarz, EVP Engineering of CMG: “The continuous improvement of the engine design, based on the evidence and experience of 5 million flight hours, results in lower cost of ownership and operation. This significant TBR increase shows Continental delivering for our OEM partners and to all our customers.” The lifetime extension was possible due to several design improvements engineered in the last two years. Through key improvements, continuous testing and field experience, both the CD-135 and CD-155 are now rated to a TBR of 2,100 hours. The TBR of the CD-155 increases from 1,200 hours to 2,100 hours, the CD-135 from 1,500 to 2,100 hours. In addition, the gearbox and timing chain will be rated for 1,200 hours once EASA issues the final paperwork for these components. The CD-100 family of compression ignition engines are extensively used in flight schools around the world and have been chosen by OEMs such as Cessna Aircraft (Cessna 172 JTA Skyhawk), Diamond Aircraft (DA 40 and DA42), Glasair (Sportsman), Mooney Aircraft (M10), Piper Aircraft (Archer DX) and Robin New Aircraft. 2016 European BizAv Fleet Report This month as eyes turn to Geneva, Switzerland for EBACE2016, Mike Chase assesses the health of the European Business Aviation fleet today… According to the European Commission Winter 2016 report, Europe’s recovery from the financial crisis has been relatively slow. The European economy is now growing again, but at a modest pace with further efforts required to strengthen the region’s economy. Amid growing concerns about the global outlook, the economic recovery in Europe has entered its fourth year and prospects for a continuation overall remain favorable. The good news is that Europe’s economy appears to have so far weathered the recent deterioration in external conditions. The acceleration of economic activity expected this year is minimal. GDP in the Euro-zone is forecast to expand by 1.7% compared to 1.6% in 2015. Meanwhile, the world economy has been slowing down - its growth in 2015 is estimated at only 3%, and the expected recovery is rather shallow and surrounded by risks. Following, we’ll reflect on the current European business jet and turboprop fleet from several views. At the end of March 2016, Europe accounted for 2,398 (13%) of the global wholly-owned business jet fleet currently in operation, and 1,208 (9%) of the total business turboprop fleet (see Table A). That represents 56 fewer (-2.3%) business jets in Europe in 2016 compared to 2015. Business turboprops decreased by 26 aircraft (-2.1%) year-over-year. Europe still ranks second regionally for the total number of business jets (behind North America), and third for the total number of business turboprops (behind North and South America). In March 2011 business jets based in Europe reached their peak at 2,714 units. Over the last five years there has been a decline of 316 business jets to today’s 2,398 units. Over the same period business turboprops have also seen a decrease, but only by 14 units.

Europe’s Top Ten Models

Tables B and C show that the Citation Mustang (98 units) and King Air B200 (92 units) lead the ‘Top Ten’ popular business jet and business turboprop models in Europe, respectively. For comparison, included are the worldwide fleet totals for those models. Dropping out of the top-ten business jet list this year (compared to 2015) are Bombardier’s Challenger 605, Challenger 300 and Embraer’s Legacy 600.

Business Jets & Turboprops (By OEM)

Textron (Cessna and Hawker) lead all manufacturers of business jets in operation in Europe, as depicted in Chart A, followed by Bombardier and Dassault Falcon. These ‘Top Three’ OEMs account for 83% of the 2,398 business jets in Europe. Of the turboprop OEMs and accounting for all models, again Textron leads the way in Europe with 509 units (42%) of the total 1,208 units in operation. Piper and Pilatus comprise the remaining manufacturers that hold more than a 10% share of the business turboprops in operation in Europe, see Chart B.

Top Ten European Nations

As depicted in Tables D and E, Germany has the largest number of business jets and business turboprops in Europe. Activity in the UK also slumped in March, down 5%. Mainly this was due to a fall in private flights (charter activity was flat). In Italy, flight activity was up due to increased AOC activity. This month AOC activity was significantly up 5% in France.

March’s slowdown came mainly in Western Europe, with all major markets apart from Italy experiencing decline. Germany saw the largest drop in activity, with YOY activity down - 8%. In Q1 Germany activity was down -5% (equivalent to 460 fewer flights monthly).

After Q1 2016, activity was down by -2.2% compared to last year. Relatively, the biggest drop came in turboprop activity this month, down -5%. Meanwhile, business jet activity declined by -3%, with charter flights effected the most. On a last 12 month basis, business jet flights are trailing by -1% while prop aircraft maintain a 4% growth trend.

A few smaller markets also saw some growth in March including the Czech Republic, Austria and Portugal. Sweden has most YTD gain. Flights within Europe were down -4% in March and are at -2% for Q1. From Europe to the CIS region the 2016 trend is -8%. Business Aviation flight connections were up from the Middle East, with inbound arrivals up 11% in March (Q1 trend, up 5%). The flight training facility of leading UK private aviation company Multiflight, which is based at Leeds Bradford Airport, has been acquired by Pilot Training and Testing (PTT) Limited. PTT has acquired Multiflight’s Flight Training Centre with the aim of developing and expanding its current flight training offer, from Private Pilot’s Licence (PPL) to Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL), Instrument Rating (IR) and further for fixed wing aircraft. Garmin have announced new enhancements now available within the Garmin Pilot app for iOS mobile devices. Now pilots flying around the globe, including Europe, have the option of filing VFR flight plans for free directly with the country Aeronautical Information Service (AIS) with a Garmin Pilot subscription. Additional features for iOS include a flight profile view, new VFR charts for the United Kingdom and France, customized personal minimums, preferred runway selection, aera 660 integration and new, cost-effective pricing subscriptions. Garmin Pilot streamlines pre-flight planning and now flight plan filing within Europe, allowing pilots to file a VFR flight plan within the application direct with the country Aeronautical Information Service (AIS). Rich, interactive maps integrated within Garmin Pilot offer comprehensive coverage throughout Europe, so flight planning is simple. Unique to Garmin Pilot, a radial menu provides easy on-screen access to create user waypoints, navigate direct-to, graphically edit flight plans, view weather conditions and airport information at a glance.

TURBINE NOTES Airbus Corporate Jets has won its first contracts to retrofit ACJ aircraft with Ka-band satellite communications, from Comlux and an undisclosed customer, paving the way for ACJ operators to have a faster and more capable internet access, via the latest technology. Weather radar and satellite imagery throughout Western Europe can be overlaid on the moving map so pilots can easily discern if precipitation or cloud cover will impact a particular flight. METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs and winds aloft throughout Europe may be displayed graphically as an overlay on the moving map, within the airport information page and as a widget in split-screen mode on an iPad, aiding in the pre-flight planning and VFR flight plan filing processes. VFR chart coverage within France adds to the list of recent enhancements made within Garmin Pilot. France VFR charts join the recent addition of United Kingdom VFR charts, so pilots can easily reference important information for navigating within these countries under Visual Flight Rules. Garmin Pilot encompasses a library of over 50 VFR and IFR charts throughout Europe, which are geo-referenced so it’s easy to determine aircraft location relative to navigation fixes. Helicopter Services, a very active training school based at Wycombe Air Park, have become the eleventh training school to offer the Guimbal Cabri G2 in the UK. Serial number 1140 arrives on April 20 in the UK after a two day delivery flight from the factory in southern France.

Northumbria Helicopters, based at Newcastle Airport, have become the tenth training school to offer the Guimbal G2 Cabri in the UK. The company, now Britain’s notherlymost Cabri operator, has taken a helicopter on lease from Cotswold Helicopter Centre. This will add to the Robinson R44s operated by Northumbria Helicopters, of which they have two at Newcastle and one in Northern Ireland.

Helicopter Services, run by Leon Smith, has been established for over twenty years as one of the UK’s most experienced helicopter training, charter and helicopter tour companies. The company provides training for Private and Commercial Pilot Licences, as well as Flight Instructor and Instrument Ratings. The company fleet includes one Agusta A109C, three Airbus AS355s, one Robinson R66, three R44s and five R22s. The Cabri G2 is a two-seat light helicopter with a three-bladed fully-articulated main rotor and a Fenestron tail rotor. It has a composite-construction fuselage, and is powered by a 180hp Lycoming O360 piston engine derated to 145hp. More Cabri G2 helicopters were built in 2015 than any other two-seat certified helicopter across the world, according to the annual factory production survey by GAMA, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. Northumbria Helicopters was recently bought by Andrew Hutchinson, an experienced pilot with over 5,000 flying hours. Hutchinson has extensive experience on long-line work with Bell 205s, and the leased Cabri will have a hook fitted to it so he can offer those skills as a training school. Hutchinson is working closely with the CAA to extend the current approvals for Northumbria Helicopters, some of which had been allowed to lapse by the previous owner of the company. Displaying at Heli UK Expo Cotswold Helicopter Centre will be displaying the G2 Cabri at Heli UK Expo 1-3 July 2016 at Sywell UK, with at least five examples on site, one of which will be available for demonstration flights. Helipaddy, one of the world's largest moderated databases of helicopter landing sites and points of interest, has started to create suggested helicopter tours as a way of demonstrating the capabilities and value of their system. The first itinerary around the significant First World War (WW1) locations of Northern France has been well received. The suggested route will give pilots and their passengers a unique impression of the length of the Western Front, while enabling a number of the key sites to be viewed from the air such as the huge earth crater near the village of La Boisselle. Helipaddy is also providing an expert guide from the University of Cambridge who will put the history into context at the various chosen landing points en route. Other recommendations include a lunch stop at Chateau de Cocove near St Omer, a town notable for its cemetery of 2,874 graves. This reflects the town's focus on medical support in WW1, and at its peak had eleven separate clearing hospitals, as it was the custom for each regiment to have their own facilities. Two of the six departure dates between May and September 2016 are already sold out. Dynali H3 Sport.

The London Heliport at Battersea, the capital city’s only commercially licensed heliport, achieved its best year for activity since 2008 with over 10,500 movements recorded for the year ending 31st March, 2016. A high proportion of growth was attributable to business movements. There was an uptick especially, in private users during 2015, including the prolific weekly departures from King Power’s Agusta A109, complementing Leicester City FC’s ascension to top flight football. Significantly, around 20% of movements were inter-lining with business jet flights, according to General Manager Simon Hutchins. The top airports for connections last year included London Stansted, London Luton, London Oxford Airport and Farnborough. The heliport also marked its 500,000th movement at the end of last year as it prepared to take local vicinity VFR air traffic control inhouse, with its own staff. NATS provide the wider London area service from whom the heliport receives inbound flights and transfer outbound traffic. This was completed in February 2016 with a view to improving the service and becoming more responsive. VFR ATC staffing had been previously outsourced. I More information visit –

Two years ago, the H3 Sport has been certified as UL helicopter in France. In two years, it has become the bestseller side-by-side UL helicopter in that country, thanks to its interesting operating cost and advantage for ab-initio training of UL pilots. Last year, first H3 Sport was sold to the new Dynali distributor in Spain (Hedespa). After having worked (for a long time) in cooperation with Dynali H3 Sport instrument panel. Spanish Civil Aviation Authorities, for making the H3 Sport the first UL helicopter certified in that country, Dynali has started EASA-based structural tests of one complete helicopter structure. Tests were conducted according to the major EASA CS-VLR / BCAR-VLH / FAR27 certification specifications, and up to the worst loading conditions. The complete helicopter has been sent to the Institute of Aviation (Warsaw), one of the major test center in Europe. The major conclusion is that the structure of the H3 EasyFlyer is one of the safest known UL helicopter structure, with safety factors above all expectations.
