According to the European Commission Winter 2017 report, Europe’s recovery from the financial crisis has been relatively slow. The European economy is now growing again, but at a modest pace with further efforts required to strengthen the region’s economy. The economic recovery in Europe has entered its fifth year and prospects for a continuation overall remain favourable. Following, we’ll reflect on the current European business jet and turboprop fleet. At the end of March 2017, Europe accounted for 2,473 (13%) of the global wholly-owned in-operation business jet fleet, and 1,207 (8%) of the total business turboprop fleet.

That represents 75 more (3.1%) business jets in Europe in 2017 compared to 2016. In last year’s comparison there was a decline of 56 (-2.3% fewer) business jets in 2016 versus 2015. Business turboprops decreased by a single aircraft year-over-year, meanwhile. Europe still ranks second regionally for the total number of business jets (behind North America), and third for the total number of business turboprops (behind North and South America). Europe’s Top Ten Models Tables A and Table B show that Dassault’s Falcon 7X (112 units) and the Pilatus PC-12 NG (93 units) lead the ‘Top 10’ popular business jets and business turboprop models in Europe, respectively. For comparison, included are the worldwide fleet totals for each model along with the European fleet percentage. The Falcon 7X (43%) and Global 6000 (37%) have over a third of their worldwide fleet based in Europe. The Avanti II (37%) and Avanti P.180 (48%) have over a third of their worldwide turboprop fleet based in Europe.

Business Jets & Turboprops (By OEM) Textron (Cessna and Hawker) lead all manufacturers of business jets in-operation in Europe, followed by Bombardier and Dassault Falcon. Tecnam unveiled new versions of the P Twenty Ten, its best-selling P2006T and the P2002 Sierra. The P Twenty Ten MkII, P2006T mkII and P2002 Sierra mkII all come in response to customer demand. P Twenty Ten mkII: Tecnam has developed a more ‘powerful’ aeroplane with the introduction of the 215hp Lycoming IO-390 engine equipped with a VP prop. Featuring a tuned induction system, roller tappets and ‘Slick Start’ ignition, the IO-390 engine has a fuel injection system which meters fuel in proportion to the induction airflow with fuel vaporization taking place at the intake ports. The cylinders have air-cooled heads and fits into the same footprint as the 180-hp IO-360 which powers the original P Twenty Ten model. Higher horsepower notwithstanding another key feature of Tecnam P Twenty Ten MkII is the option of the state-of-the-art Garmin G1000 Nxi Next Generation Flight Deck. And as a further safety enhancement Tecnam has now included the provision of ADS-B Out as standard on all P Twenty Ten aircraft. P2002 MkII: The new version of the P2002 Sierra will feature the Rotax 915 iS/ISC engine. Based on the popular Rotax 912/914 engine series, the Rotax 915 iS/iSC 135hp engine offers the best power-to-weight ratio in its class and is expected to meet customer demand for higher payload and shorter take-off capabilities in this aircraft. Alpi Aviation Back in Britain Italian light aircraft manufacturer Alpi Aviation is back in Britain with a brand new distribution and build centre for their Pioneer range in Essex. Alpi Aviation UK is based at the home of aircraft maintenance and refurbishment experts Cavendish Aviation and is led by Managing Director Steve Allen. “The Pioneer range is recognised worldwide with over 800 aircraft flying across the globe so we’re delighted to be representing Alpi Aviation’s interests in the UK and bringing a first class service to Pioneer pilots up and down the country,” said Steve who will have a 300 Hawk demonstrator on their stand at this year’s Aero Expo in Wycombe Air Park. Steve laid out the plans that Pioneer pilots, old and new, can expect from Alpi Aviation UK going forward: “We’re here to support the existing Alpi community in the UK and get new owners and potential Pioneer pilots excited about this fantastic range of contemporary Italian performance light aircraft which will come with an exclusive UK specification that complies with LAA regulations. “We also stock spare parts straight from the Alpi factory in Italy which means that Pioneer pilots now have a central point in this country for orders and maintenance.” Alpi Aviation UK plan to make the Pioneer 200, 300 Hawk and 400 immediately available to the UK audience with a range of engine and avionic options to ensure pilots can personalise their aircraft. Reborn Launches Remanufactured Piper Warrior PA28 series Thruxton (UK) based Reborn Aviation has launched a range of re-manufactured Piper single engined aircraft. The company aims to develop a European market for their enhanced trainers, offering an alternative to poor quality second hand aircraft. Remanufacturing is a process of deep renovation and enhancement epitomised by the US based company Nextant Aerospace (Hawker 400 and Beech C90). At the heart of the proposition is a unique single piece replacement instrument panel designed and constructed in association with Gama Aviation. This EASA minor modification allows for the conversion of most PA28 series aircraft including Warriors, Archers and Arrows. Following the successful maiden flight of the Reborn prototype, founder Edmund Hewertson said: “Following three years of research and development, we are delighted to open the order book for these unique machines.” He went on: “The process sees each donor aircraft reduced to component form and each part is then inspected, replaced if necessary or restored. The fuselage, wings and flying controls are stripped to bare metal and then given an Alachrome Sponge Bath to ensure they remain corrosion proofed after painting. We believe this gives the aircraft a life extension of up to 20 years. True testament to how well Piper built these machines in the first place.” On rebuild, a new factory engine, new propeller, new avionics and myriad of parts are then added. The full package includes 30 upgrades from the original including a range of aerodynamic fairings, 3 LED landing lights and a steel battery box. Hewertson concluded: “Our goal was always to make a series of subtle changes that when combined make a significant difference. Lighter, quieter, faster, safer and more economical; early indications suggest we have achieved just that.” The process takes approximately 5 months for each aircraft and Reborn plans to complete between 6 and 9 aircraft each year. Just Aircraft SuperSTOL Utilized in Russian Wildlife Studies A team of Russian biologists needed an aircraft to conduct surveys of wildlife populations along the Northeastern Russian Coast, primarily where it borders the Ural Mountains, the Barents Sea and Kara Sea above the Arctic Circle. George V. Kirtaev, a pilot who was trained in Alaska to measure wildlife populations from an aircraft, ordered a SuperSTOL kit from Just Aircraft in the summer of 2015. Russia allows homebuilts to be constructed, certified and flown in their airspace.

Research by aviation giant Boeing proves that the best way of reducing drag and lowering fuel consumption is to keep aerodynamically clean aircraft. Proven by science, Aerocoat is a hydrophobic technology that provides a hard wearing scratch resistance coat and converts a previously amorphous surface into a super smooth finish. It cannot be penetrated by the elements and significantly reduces boundary layer drag. Based in Essex, Aerocoat has already been applied to several Tecnam models: P2006T, P2008JC and P2010. It is possible to fly low and slow which is essential for counting and photography.” Though he admits to an occasional flight for exploring or enjoying the mountains, canyons, rivers and plains along Russia’s north shore, most of his flying has focused on scientific pursuits. He added: “There is a lot of space inside for gear and you can even spend the night in it. With wings that fold easily, one person can move the aircraft on virtually any surface, even on floats.” Before Kirtaev’s team began their surveys, Russia had done very little in the way of monitoring waterfowl populations, breeding grounds or the impact of hunters. The surveys have resulted in protections for wildlife areas and endangered species. In the summer of 2018, Kirtaev will journey farther north in an attempt to measure polar bear populations and habitat. Aircraft owners and pilots operating throughout Europe have been preparing for the upcoming 8.33 kHz channel spacing requirement now for the better part of two decades. By December 31, 2017, all aircraft operating in Eurocontrol airspace will be required to have 8.33 kHz comm radios, which has been enacted by the European Commission and its Single European Sky (SES) initiative. Garmin is happy to offer several feature-rich solutions that ease the transition and address the 8.33 kHz spacing requirement, while also providing some additional benefits to pilots and aircraft owners. This versatile solution not only satisfies the 8.33 kHz channel spacing requirement within the SES initiative, but includes additional valueadded features. The GTR 225 has a bright, sunlight-readable display that will automatically present the tuned frequency’s navigational aid or airport identifier. It also boasts an easy frequency lookup feature and advanced standby monitoring, so it’s easy to monitor ATIS and listen to tower or ground frequency simultaneously. In addition to the GTR 225, the GNC 255 NAV/COM radio adds navigation capability with VOR/ILS and glideslope functionality. The GTR and GNC series automatically store the 20 most recently used frequencies and allow pilots to store up to 15 specified frequencies, such as the pilot’s home airport or other frequently visited destinations. A familiar flip-flop feature allows frequencies to be entered in a standby window and then activated with a press of a button. Both models also include a built-in voice-activated two-place intercom.

The GTN 650/750 touchscreen GPS/NAV/COMs include 8.33 kHz spacing while also providing a full-color moving map, GPS navigation, high-resolution terrain mapping, graphical flight planning, geo-referenced charts, traffic and weather display, connectivity and much more. Saving even more time and cost associated with these upgrades, the GTR 225, GNC 255 and GTN 650/750 are all approved for installation under standard documentation.

New for Android mobile devices, Garmin Pilot is now a fullfeatured navigation application for use throughout the world, including flight planning, global weather information, VFR flight plan filing and more. Rich, interactive maps integrated within Garmin Pilot offer worldwide coverage using Jeppesen NavData. Highly configurable maps also allow pilots to choose between track-up or north-up orientation depending on preference. Unique to Garmin Pilot, a radial menu provides easy on-screen access to perform common tasks in-flight or on the ground, including the option to create user waypoints, navigate direct-to, graphically edit flight plans, view weather conditions and airport information at a glance. Global weather information including METARs, TAFs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs, NOTAMs and winds aloft may be displayed graphically as an overlay on the moving map page, within the airport information page and as a widget in split-screen mode. Additionally, radar and satellite imagery for Western Europe, Canada, Australia and the U.S. provide pilots with even more weather products to it’s easy to determine if precipitation or cloud cover will impact a particular flight. Additional features also included within Garmin Pilot for Android mobile devices: • FastFind, which incorporates predictive logic to suggest airports and waypoints using current GPS location so entering flight plan information is faster and easier. • European Visual Reporting Points (VRPs), which can be overlaid on the moving map and be incorporated into a flight plan for easy navigation throughout Europe. Pilots can download Garmin Pilot on Apple and Android mobile devices as part of a 30-day free trial. After the 30-day trial period, customers may purchase an annual subscription for Garmin Pilot and link up to three mobile devices under a single subscription.

Oldest Flying PBY Catalina The PBY Catalina is one of the most recognizable warbirds in the world and although not exactly common, there are still a number of them being flown worldwide. Gert Jan Mentink, Dutch Aviation Society, highlights the oldest flying Catalina… Surprisingly, the world’s oldest flying PBY Catalina cannot be found in the USA or Canada, but in the Netherlands, where she is lovingly flown and maintained by the Catalina Foundation, or ‘Stichting Exploitatie Catalina PBY’. A chance encounter on a truck travelling to Switzerland put a young aviator on a 40 year journey of discovery and adventure which nearly cost him and his son their lives after an accident in the UK in 2016. Here’s their story… The adventure began for Werner Ammann, then aged 24, in 1968 when he was travelling on the back of a truck from Germany to Switzerland, and he saw a German Klemm Kl35D which had originally been built in 1939 as a training aircraft. However, it was no longer in an airworthy condition but still had its original engine. Werner acquired the aircraft and spent the next five years restoring it back to its former glory. Since then he has become both the pilot and mechanic for

The water tanks were removed and replaced with sixteen passenger seats, eight in the front cabin and eight in the rear. The aircraft was repainted as Royal Netherlands Navy Y-74 in olive drab with orange triangle national insignias, as were carried during the Japanese invasion of the Netherland Indies in 1942. Registration was once again changed to N27311, registered to Western Aviation Maintenance in Mesa, Arizona, but operated by Cat Air. Early in 1997, reservation was made for a Dutch registration, PH-PBY, and was granted the same year. BizAv Activity - Europe European flight activity growth in March rounded off the most positive Q1 for some years, according to WingX. There were 67,231 Business Aviation departures in Europe in March 2017, up 8% YoY.

Following Q1 2017, Business Aviation activity is up +5% versus Q1 2016. Among the highlights, Germany is on the rebound after a weak 2016, whilst France and UK sustained strong activity trends despite macroeconomic turbulence. Flights from Germany were up 18% YoY, and were strongest in the domestic sector, and in connections with the UK and France. The average monthly growth in Germany YTD is 855 flights. Meanwhile, France remains the busiest market, with 22% of total European activity. March’s 4% growth added 560 YoY flights. Activity out of the UK continues to grow, with direct connections to EU destinations up by 7% YoY in March. Whereas flights within Europe were well up this month (almost 10% YoY), flights to the Middle East and CIS regions declined. Flights from Europe to North America and Africa enjoyed double-digit growth. All fleet categories – business jets, props, pistons – increased YoY activity during March, and while Turboprops and Pistons had the strongest growth relatively, Business Jets generated almost 60% of activity, with flights up by 6% YoY. The Charter market is generating the most activity growth, especially in the Light Jet segment. The largest share of flights this month was private mission, increasing 6.5% YoY, following several months of decline. Since its inception in 1939, Wycombe Air Park has been through many phases and seen many changes. In recent years, its current usage had been under threat but now, with the signing of a 50 Year lease by British European Aviation, at last the future of Wycombe Air Park is secure.

A Brief Introduction To BEA

BEA has grown out of a desire to provide the best and most comprehensive services to light aircraft owners, pilots and other users. Their network of six bases consists of Cumbernauld in Scotland, Gloucester and Wellesbourne in the north and midlands, and Thruxton, Denham and Wycombe in the south.

Flexibility is key to all training offered by the group and applies not only to Universities but also to students. This enables training to be carried out as efficiently and quickly as required which appeals to both mature students and school levers alike.

Helicopter Pilot Training

A major part of BEA’s capability is the delivery of all training elements of Commercial Pilot, Air Transport and Aircraft Engineering degree programmes. The group is also dedicated to expanding its capabilities in line with current and on-going University requirements.

Training programmes are rigorously monitored for quality, efficiency, safety and professionalism; ensuring that BEA produces commercially ready pilots and engineers to the highest level of practical skill in optimum time.

Every Heli Air base offers quality assured modular training that is standardised, consistent and thorough. The training covers all levels from PPL(H), Type Ratings and ATPL(H) ground school to CPL(H) (including night rating) and Instructor Rating. Helicopter Engineering Facilities

Their two dedicated maintenance centres provide comprehensive helicopter engineering services from repairs and overhauls to total rebuilds and are one of only two companies in the UK that can train engineers on the Rolls Royce RR300 engine. Apart from Robinson helicopters, work is routinely carried out on a wide spectrum of machines including Bell, Agusta and Eurocopter. In 2014, Heli Air opened its purpose-built ground school approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) providing students with a unique environment in which to learn and to study. The facility is equipped with internet linked laptops, kitchen facilities, a reference library, areas to relax and direct access to the professional maintenance facility. It is a perfect environment for study. This dedicated facility offers both modular and full time training. For instance, the full time fast track ATPL(H) course is designed to provide career focused trainee helicopter pilots the opportunity to gain this essential qualification within six months.

Studying Within a Commercial Aviation Environment

Visits to the hangar and control tower for practical demonstrations as well as external visits which include fly-outs to other operational facilities; both provide operational relevance and greatly deepen understanding and knowledge.

Heli Air Wycombe is a thriving commercial helicopter business within a busy aviation park. Housing, amongst other things, sales and administration offices, meeting rooms and customer hospitality areas, it is also home to Heli Air Ground School and Heli Air’s main engineering and maintenance facility.

This method offers a higher degree of control over individual student’s training, allowing them to structure the various courses as best fits their own lifestyle and other studies.

Aircraft Training Fleet

Booker maintains a 20 strong fleet of aircraft to enable students to experience a variety of aircraft and their capabilities. The main stays of the fleet are two seat Cessna 152s and 4 seat Piper Warriors. The rest of the fleet is made up of two DA42s, a Piper Dakota, a Piper Arrow and a Cessna 172. Booker is also able to boast two state of the art simulators used in the commercial modules for single and multi-engine training and instrument rating. This equipment allows students to be demonstrated and experience the most advance training manoeuvres on the ground before attempting them for real in the skies.

Engineering Department

The Engineering Department of Booker Aviation maintains the company’s fleet of aircraft, and also in excess of 20 privately owned aircraft. Booker enables BEA to offer the same engineering opportunities available at Heli Air but in the fix-wing industry.

Studying in this unique environment provides trainees and students with a daily opportunity to meet commercial pilots, clients, engineering and support staff, providing invaluable insight into and experience of the world of aviation. Booker Aviation

Today, our fleet of R66s are used for a variety of commercial applications, public transport and aerial pipeline inspections, as well as advanced flight training,” explained Heli Air’s Managing Director, Richard Packe. “In addition, the R66 has also proven to be very popular with private helicopter owners.” And whether its rotorcraft are providing commercial work, pipeline patrol or flight training, Heli Air strives to ensure that its helicopters offer pilots and passengers the safest flight possible. That’s why they have Genesys Aerosystems HeliSAS Autopilot and Stability Augmentation System on three of their Robinson R66s. The reason for upgrading your R66 or R44 with HeliSAS is simple, Packe explained, “for the added safety benefits of reducing cockpit workload for both commercial and private pilots.” He said, “As a leading sales distributor for Robinson Helicopters, we have seen how the private, single-pilot helicopter owner benefits from the reduced pilot workload.” “We also wanted to offer modern helicopters, which will introduce students to this type of advanced system early on in their training so they are better prepared should they decide to pursue a career flying larger helicopters,” added Brian Kane, Heli Air’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “The easy-to-fly HeliSAS is the perfect complement to the Aspen and Garmin glass panel avionics we have in our R66 helicopters.”

HeliSAS: The ultimate copilot. According to Jamie Luster, Genesys Aerosystems Director of Sales, the system’s advanced capabilities reduce single-pilot workload, while providing precise control of the aircraft during all modes of flight – regardless of wind conditions or shifts in the aircraft’s weight. “From the second you lift off, HeliSAS acts as a full-time copilot whose ‘hands never leave the controls,’” she said. “Should a pilot become disorientated, all they need to do is to loosen the hold of the helicopter’s cyclic and HeliSAS will automatically return the helicopter to straight-and-level. That gives the pilot time to regain his or her bearings before taking back full control of the aircraft.” “With the addition of the two-axis autopilot option, HeliSAS provides a full array of workload-reducing capabilities including altitude hold and NAV hold,” Ms. Luster stated. “Additionally, should a VFR-rated pilot encounter IMC, they can easily command a 180-degree turn by simply using the HeliSAS heading control and inputs from the helicopter’s HSI or EFIS.” “Pilots initially struggle with loosening their grip of the controls, but soon recognize the robustness of the HeliSAS system and immediately trust it to fly the helicopter,” she said. “That frees them up to do tasks like tune the radios, read their map, scan for traffic, or just sit back and actually enjoy the scenery and fun of flying a light helicopter.” While the Genesys HeliSAS is an incredibly capable and affordable system, it is also very compact and lightweight, which helps make the system’s installation easier for Heli Air’s in-house engineering team. “On the R66, the system processor and roll servo system is installed under the pilot’s luggage compartment and the pitch servo forward of the cyclic stick assembly,” explained John Michalakis, Technical Director for Heli Air. “Genesys supplies the wiring harness as complete assembly and attachment hardware. We also have to route wiring up the cyclic stick and pitot and static signals to the processor, but all told the installation is pretty straightforward.

Also, it is very responsive compared to other systems, and it is very reliable,” Michalakis said. “It is a wonderful aid in the cockpit to help reduce pilot workload. I had the opportunity to personally fly an R44 across Europe back to Greece and the HeliSAS made flying a lot safer as cockpit workload reduced dramatically.” “We recently took our R66s on an extensive demonstration tour around the UK and gave hundreds of demonstration flights to prospective customers,” Packe said. “The majority of these pilots were private individuals and absolutely loved the added safety benefits HeliSAS brings to the R66.” Of course, sooner or later, clients want to know what HeliSAS costs. “The compact HeliSAS was originally designed for the Robinson platform, so while saving weight and cost was a major consideration during the design process,” Ms. Luster said, “we knew how beneficial the systems would be and wanted to ensure most owners could afford the potential lifesaving features HeliSAS provides.” Kane said, “Our customers are both private and business owners who put a very high value on safety, so HeliSAS is something they are very interested in having aboard their Robinson helicopter.”

Leading the orders for 2016 were 188 orders for light-single engine helicopters followed by 163 orders for the H135/H145 light-twins and 23 for the Super Puma family. Mr. Lemos’ remarks about the helicopter market in general and how Airbus was dealing with the environment compared to its competitors in the civil and parapublic markets were made during a presentation at London Oxford Airport last month. Leading the way for Airbus in 2016 was the first delivery of the new H175 medium twin helicopter for the VVIP market with another due for delivery later this year (2017). However, other models doing well were the entry market leading H125/130 series with between 40-80 unit sales per year; with the H135/145 having good market share due to resale values and being able to land on high value yachts.

On the occasion of the recent tour to Italy by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, Leonardo provided a modern AW139 helicopter to allow rapid transport between some of the trip’s main locations in comfort and with the highest safety standards.

The HELP Appeal provides funding for providing helicopter landing pads at major trauma centres and key accident and emergency hospitals across England and Scotland. Robert Bertram, chief executive of the HELP Appeal, said: “The new helipad at The Royal Sussex County Hospital will help to ensure that patients get the fastest access to the often life-saving treatment they require.” The helipad is scheduled to open in 2018.

Built at Aix-les-Milles, the Cabri G2 has been developed by engineer Bruno Guimbal, who previously worked for Airbus Helicopters in the days they were called Eurocopter, and Aerospatiale before that. As a fully composite fuselage, the inherent strength and technically more advanced ground-up approach has been instrumental in the success of the type, which is now flown in 27 countries around the world, with new distributors being added all the time. The Cabri G2 today flies in Canada, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam and most countries in Europe. Earlier in 2017, HeliGroup became the distributor for the Guimbal Cabri G2 in UK and Ireland through the introduction of a significant amount of capital. This move has led to stepping up a gear in both the sales and leasing of Cabri G2 helicopters, building on the existing success in the UK which already has the largest national fleet of this type across the world. The Cabri G2 is itself a disruptor in the piston helicopter market. In 2016, more examples of the Cabri G2 were built at the factory in southern France than Robinson built R22s at their production line in California. In figures distributed by the British Helicopter Association, the Cabri G2 is the only piston engine helicopter to show a fleet increase between 2012 and 2017, growing from zero to 26 at the time of their survey on 1 April. As a comparison, the Robinson R22 fleet fell by 40 from 176 to 136, and the Robinson R44 fleet by 55 from 272 to 217.

The Twin Squirrel has been a very successful aircraft for Airbus since it was first certified, and HeliGroup have been able to secure one of the very last 355s off the production line and have contracted with Airbus Helicopters UK for a comprehensive maintenance plan. Well known as a filming platform and widely popular in taking spectators to sporting events, the AS355NP model has full FADEC for engine control and monitoring, and the Safran Arrius 1A1 engines allow Cat-A take-off at max gross weight in temperatures of up to 25C at sea level. The NP also has an upgraded main rotor gearbox, allowing an extra 200kg external load over earlier models, and the HeliGroup aircraft is fitted with a hook for this sort of work.

Here in the UK the success is well-demonstrated by the 200th Cabri G2 on display at Heli UK Expo. Resplendent in its Union Jack colours, G-IZOO features a full Aspen Avionics EFD1000 Evolution digital avionics system with a Guimbal-developed advanced multi-function vehicle monitor. The two displays now standard on modern glass-cockpits an Attitude Display Indicator and a Horizontal Situation Indicator - although relatively new to the piston helicopter market. The Aspen panels ensure the Cabri G2 is perfectly adapted to the missions it has based its success on - ab-initio professional training and private owner operator flyer. Training schools flying the Cabri G2 are finding that this feature allows an easy and direct transition to twin turbine, glass cockpit helicopters for pilots aiming at flying professionally. HeliGroup's approach to the UK market with the Cabri G2 includes an innovative range of leasing packages - something widely available in the US helicopter market for a number of years, but hardly ever seen up to now in the United Kingdom. Primarily aimed at helicopter schools, HeliGroup has six Cabri G2 helicopters on lease to UK customers at present, and this number will increase - and

HeliGroup operates from both Wycombe Air Park (Booker) and London Oxford Airport, where they have established their Guimbal Cabri G2 Centre of Excellence.
