Bose Introduces a New Forward Thinking Aviation Headset for Professional Pilots

You may know Bose as a global premium audio company that makes high performance noise cancelling headphones, or for its small audio systems that produce big sound. What you may not know is that since its founding, Bose Corporation has been dedicated to research and development of innovative products and technologies that bring real benefits to people’s lives.

One of these innovations was the first commercially available active noise cancelling aviation headset, which Bose introduced in 1989. Since then, Bose has been a leader in the aviation headset market, developing several highlyacclaimed models, including its current offering, the A20® Aviation headset.

Its most recent innovation is the Bose® ProFlight Aviation Headset, which was announced on April 10th at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. The new ProFlight Aviation Headset features advanced Bose technology in an innovative new form factor, with features designed for lower noise environments and the unique needs of pilots who fly in airline flight decks and corporate jet aircraft.

The Bose ProFlight, which incorporates over 30 U.S. design and utility patents, features a headbanded, in-ear design, but does not use the typical earbuds that are inserted deep into the ear canal.

Instead, Bose has utilized its StayHear®+ tips, which can also be found on many of its consumer audio headphones.

Made of very soft silicone, the StayHear+ tips are highly stable and sit

comfortably in the bowl of the ear, without being inserted uncomfortably deep inside the ear.

According to Bose, the ProFlight is its smallest, lightest, digital active noise cancelling communication headset ever.

It delivers the audio clarity pilots expect in a size and configuration designed for comfort over extended flights. Some of the unique features include three user selectable levels of active noise cancellation, a quick-release, sideswappable mic and down cable, and Tap Control for Talk-Through communication, which allows pilots to better communicate with those outside the intercom, without removing an earbud.

The ProFlight, which uses patented Bose digital noise cancellation technology, also features full function Bluetooth connectivity which allows pilots to connect to EFB’s, smart phones or other Bluetooth® devices, thereby helping pilots manage their workload more efficiently. And the Bose Connect app, which is free to download, provides additional capabilities like the ability for two headsets to connect to a single source, like an EFB, at the same time.

The Bose ProFlight Aviation Headset, like the award winning A20 Aviation Headset, is FAA TSO and EASA E/TSO certified. Bose will continue to offer its award winning A20 Aviation Headset, which is ideally suited for louder noise environments like those found in turboprop and piston engine aircraft.

GAMA Confident of Increased Aircraft Sales At Aero Friedrichshafen the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA) reported positive results for the industry with 2,324 aircraft being delivered worldwide in 2017.

Some 939 of these were single-engine piston airplanes, while at the business jet end of the market there was a slight increase in sales (676 aircraft sold). Around 2,300 aircraft were delivered worth around $20 billion at list prices.

XCub Achieves EASA Certification In early April, Yakima, Washington-based manufacturer CubCrafters announced that its XCub had received EASA type certification. “EASA certification is an important step in the continuing expansion of our international markets,� said Randy Lervold, president of CubCrafters. “We’ve received considerable interest from European customers after the XCub’s US launch in 2016.�

EASA certificated in the CS-VLA category.�

Dominique Roland, EASA head of general aviation, said the aircraft completed a flight test programme that started in 2015, the final hurdle being spin tests.

Roland said he was surprised Sonaca took his advice and obtained Design Organisation Approval (DOA), granted by EASA in January.

APPG Targets UK National Planning Policy Changes The UK All Party Parliamentary Group for Aviation (APPG) is spearheading efforts to have the value of general aviation recognized in the next version of the UK’s National Planning Policy Framework.

The consultation ended on May 10th with APPG calling for various amendments, having already succeeded in a change which calls for Local Authorities to take into account the wider economic impact of possible airfield closures when considering planning applications. The APPG stated “The new para 105(f) does for the first time recognize general aviation in the NPPF.�

The History of Aircraft Trusts Aircraft trusts are an acceptable means for registering aircraft in the United States.

What was initially set up to assist the commercial aviation industry is now also used by private aircraft owners to obtain US registration. Aircraft Guaranty elaborates.

The Civil Aeronautics Act of 1938 states that the owner of an aircraft is the person who holds the legal title to it. The FAA expanded this rule in 1939, when it determined that the buyer under a conditional sales agreement is the owner for FAA registration purposes, even though the title to the aircraft was vested in the seller and remained in the seller until all payments were made.

These 1970s FAA opinions were in response to changes in the way aircraft were being financed. Because investors and equity partners from outside the US were investing in aircraft the ruling was used for commercial airlines, and even today it facilitates globalization in our economy.

Once an aircraft owner is identified, the next step is to determine if the owner is eligible to register the aircraft. The Transportation Code states that only aircraft owners who are citizens of the US are permitted to register an aircraft.

On January 1, 1980, an amendment to the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) proposed by the FAA became effective. This amendment covered the registration of aircraft subject to various forms of ownership, which for the first time included trustee-owned aircraft. It set the requirements applicable to the registration of the aircraft owned by trustees. The last sentence in the amendment states that “nothing in this paragraph prevents those persons from having more than 25% of the beneficial interest in the trust”. This refers to people who are neither US citizens nor resident aliens.

Common Practice In the 1970s, ownership of aircraft by trustees became common to accommodate the investment of multiple equity parties in an aircraft. The FAA recognized registrations of these aircraft, even though non-US citizen investors were beneficiaries under the trust agreements.

There have been many changes in financing, leasing, and operating arrangements for aircraft over the years. It is no longer common to find multiple equity investors as beneficiaries under one trust in aircraft financing, leasing, or operating arrangements, although there are often multiple owners of an aircraft which means there may be more than one non-citizen trust (NCT) owner of an aircraft.

Initially, the FAA required that non-US citizen beneficiaries could not have more than 25% interest in the aircraft. For aircraft with non-US citizens having more than 25% interest, the FAA would approve registration of the aircraft in the name of an owner trustee.

Aircraft Guaranty has been helping owners register their aircraft since 1989, and is available to answer any questions you may have on trusts.

As sales became more complex over the years following this ruling, it was expanded to include nominal purchase option leases, synthetic leases and other forms of leases generally referred to as ‘finance’ leases.

Augsburg Air Service announced at Aero Friedrichshafen in April that it has started to offer cockpit conversions for Beechcraft King Air aircraft.

Tarbes, France-based manufacturer Daher announced at the Sun ‘n’ Fun show in Lakeland, Florida in early April that new features had been added to its TBM930 aircraft’s Garmin G3000 flight deck.

Enhancements include Baro Vnav; FlightStream 510 WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity – which enables connectivity to mobile devices running Garmin Pilot, Foreflight, or FltPlan Go apps; and Surface Watch, which improves situational awareness at airports.

The handover of the first customer airplane (to PlaneSense) went ahead before the yearend, and in January 2018, the PC-24 (s/n 101) was flown to US subsidiary Pilatus Business, where the delivery to its future operator took place. Since then, the first PC-24 has amassed over 250 hours flight time.

Across the Group as a whole, the number of full-time employees exceeded 2,000 for the first time during 2017. A total of 152 new jobs were created and at the end of 2017,

Pilatus Group employed 2,113 team members (including 123 apprentices). As much as 94% of the workforce is based in Switzerland, signalling Pilatus’ commitment to the current location.

At 54%, Government Aviation contributed more to total turnover in 2017 than in the previous year: 29 trainers were delivered (almost a third more than in 2016). Sales were supplemented by revenue generated from support agreements. These products are becoming increasingly important, both for customers and for Pilatus.

In General Aviation, 2017 saw further expansion in the after-sales service. PC-12 and PC-24 operators now have 24-hour service – wherever they are located around the world. The General Aviation Business Unit delivered 85 PC-12 NGs, an achievement made even more remarkable given that many aircraft OEMs worldwide reported a reduction in sales revenues.

Investment in Infrastructure With a focus on expanding the PC-24 series production capacity, all production processes were optimised in 2017. The production teams moved into a new assembly hall and Pilatus commissioned the new Surface Treatment Centre (where almost two million individual parts will be primed and painted).

Reflecting on 2017 and looking forward to the year ahead, Oscar J. Schwenk, Chairman of the Board of Pilatus, noted, “2017 was an exceptionally successful financial year for Pilatus…The main goal for 2018 is to ensure a successful and widereaching launch for the PC-24.”

First Electric Air Races To Start in 2020

Electric aircraft manufacturers are being invited to tender to become founding technical partners of a new motorsport series, Air Race E, run by Air Race Events.

Air Race E was created by air racing promoter Jeff Zaltman, who has also founded the Air Race 1 World Cup. It will see electric airplanes racing directly against each other on a tight circuit just above the ground.

Air Race E is expected to be sanctioned by the Formula Air Racing Association (FARA) and Association des Pilotes D’Avions de Formules (APAF), upon launch of the series.

Dominique Milcendeau, President of APAF, said; “There is no doubt that air racing has been significant in aircraft and engine designs and in technological developments. The Schneider Trophy, the Reno Air Races, the Gordon Bennett Trophy and the Cleveland Races ring in the mind of pilots but also engineers worldwide.

Tayside Aviation Orders Alsim ALX Dundee, Scotland-based flight school Tayside Aviation has placed an order for an Alsim ALX, which will join the school’s Alsim AL200 MCC simulator next year. The ALX offers capabilities for multi-engine piston training as well as light/medium turboprops and medium jets.

Jim Watt, managing director of Tayside Aviation, said the company had been a customer of the French simulator manufacturer “for over ten years” and added that the ALX “will allow us to develop an MPL [Multi-crew Pilot Licence] with our partner airline.” The company has been working closely with Loganair in particular, and offers a pilot BSc programme through Middlesex University–the first of its kind in Scotland.

Trig Avionics has introduced a £299 GPS position source for ADS-B transponders following certification to the ETSO-C199 standard.

The TN72 is a certified TABS (Traffic Awareness Beacon System) device that provides visibility to all ADS-B receivers. It is “one of the easiest ways to become ADS-B Out equipped,” said the UK company, which added it is arranging EASA Minor Change approvals for popular aircraft types.

Trig marketing manager Jon Roper said, “In busy skies VFR pilots with a Trig transponder can become ADS-B equipped, using a TN72 GPS position source. This is a logical upgrade and a small price to pay for the benefit of improved safety.

Trig is also offering its 8.33kHz radios. “Growing numbers of airfields are becoming active, using 8.33 channels. It makes sense for pilots to get 8.33 equipped now, ahead of any local 8.33 deadline dates. Having a Trig 8.33 radio will remove the risk of fines and regulatory action. Already it is becoming harder to fly cross-country without inadvertently transmitting across an 8.33 channel if equipped with an older 25 kHz radio,” said Roper.

Both the mounts include a built-in 14V or 28V cooling fan and can be ordered with 2.7A USB power supplies.

3W Expands North American Sales Force German engine maker 3W-International is growing its direct sales structure in the USA, Canada and Mexico with the addition of Constantin Diehl to its team.

The BTX650XX transponder is “designed specifically for the rigorous flying environment characteristic of helicopter operations,” said the company.

“Paired with a FreeFlight Systems 1203C SBAS/GNSS sensor, these remote-mounted solutions provide helicopter operators a complete and cost-effective way to equip with ADS-B Out,” added the Baden-Airpark, Germany-based company.

Karsten Schudt, managing director of SW-International, said, “3W-International is the last remaining German two-stroke combustion engine manufacturer in the UAS industry…all the others are in Chinese hands. Manned-Unmanned Teaming Capailities Demonstrated

Airbus Helicopters and Schiebel have tested Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) capabilities between an H145 platform and a CAMCOPTER S-100 UAS, becoming the first European helicopter OEMs to demonstrate this technology with the highest level of interoperability (LOI 5)…

Airbus Helicopters and Schiebel carried out test flights with the support of the Austrian Armaments and Defence Technology Agency. The two aircraft jointly flew different scenarios including the detection of objects hidden in places not accessible by traditional helicopters. The S-100 was controlled and piloted by an operator sitting in the H145.

During the flights, the control was also temporarily handed over to a ground-based control station by the pilot in order to simulate the return of the manned helicopter for refueling.

The trials went up to MUM-T LOI 5, which allows the manned platform to exercise full control of the UAS including its take-off and landing. LOI 1, the lowest level, is the indirect receipt and /or transmission of sensor data obtained by the UAS to the manned aircraft.

MUM-T Benefits “Manned-Unmanned Teaming multiplies the capabilities of both systems”, notes Mark Henning, Program Manager at Airbus Helicopters.

“Smaller UAS with vertical take-off and landing capabilities can, for example, fly around obstacles such as trees or buildings closer than a helicopter could. They are able to explore unknown territory and deliver information to the helicopter crew which is operating from a safe position and which can then step in with the helicopter’s superior effects, having received a clear picture from the UAS. “Our airborne MUM-T management system will become a highly attractive feature for our entire product range…as it adds an extremely valuable operational capability. The MUM-T capability can be implemented in any kind of helicopter and can interact with all types of unmanned systems, in particular Airbus Helicopters’ new VSR 700 UAS.” In the framework of the test, the challenges of data transfer interference and electromagnetic compatibility of the UAS with the helicopter, as well as the

integration of a complete UAS mission planning and control system into the helicopter’s architecture were successfully managed.

The S-100 mission planning and control system was provided by Schiebel. The next step will be to optimize the human machine interface, based on a thorough analysis of the crew workload using the results of the flight tests.

Russian Helicopters Continues Aeromed Ansat Deliveries

The aircraft is the first of 12 that STLC is due to take delivery of this year, under a federal program to renew the fleet and ensure “timely provision of emergency medical services in difficult-to-reach regions.” Last year Russian Helicopters delivered 29 medical helicopters under the contract with STLC,

and in 2018 it will deliver 31 (also including 13 Mi-8AMTs and six Mi-8MTV-1s).

Meanwhile Russian Helicopters revealed in April that it was working to complete the prototype of a new light single-engine utility helicopter, the VRT500, by the end of 2019.

It will have coaxial rotors and a 1600 kg take-off weight, capacity for five people depending on configuration–it will be available in passenger, utility, cargo, training, VIP, and medevac configurations.

According to Russian Helicopters it will be able to reach a speed of 230 km/h and a range of up to 1000 km with a payload of up to 750 kg.

EASA Approves Arriel 2H

Multiflight Adds Airbus H155

The European Aviation Safety Agency in April awarded certification to the 986shp Arriel 2H turboshaft engine that powers the nine-passenger Avicopter AC312E, which first flew in July last year.

Multiflight has expanded its helicopter charter fleet with a VIP-configured Airbus H155B1. The aircraft, G-HOTB, joins Multiflight’s existing fleet that includes two AS365 Dauphins.

Safran Helicopter Engines developed the variant of the Arriel for China’s Avic Harbin Aircraft Industry Group specifically for its Avicopter, the engine being based on the Arriel 2+.

Steve Borrowdale, Multiflight managing director, said: “We have seen a significant increase in demand for Multiflight’s charter services.” The helicopter has seating for up to eight passengers, a satellite telephone, and offers “speeds in excess of 165mph and a range of over 400 miles,” said the Leeds Bradford Airport, UK-based company.

As well as private jet and helicopter charters, Multiflight offers executive handling, aircraft engineering, aircraft sales and parts.

Curti Shows New Helicopter

A new booking service that enables quotes to be viewed from various UK helicopters has been launched.

Flyt has been created by Andy King, who is a tech entrepreneur and helicopter pilot, and James Palmer, who co-founded Norwich-based operator SaxonAir. Flyt’s operating office is at the London Battersea Heliport.

King stated: “We believe the service will encourage private owners whose machines are looked after by management companies to get on board and offset their operational costs with charter.”

Helicentre Aviation has awarded over £500k GBP to successful pilots through its Scholarship Programme since it launched in 2012, and as it moves into its seventh year offering training scholarships, it is now offering another life-changing opportunity to help budding pilots fast-track their way onto the career ladder.

The training organisation will award a full FAA Commercial Pilot [CPL(H)] Scholarship, with a value of $45,000, to one successful applicant in 2019. The CPL(H) Scholarship will cover the entire cost of all post-PPL(H) hour building, ground school for the commercial written exam and the CPL(H) flying course - a total of up to 110 hours flight time in the Guimbal Cabri G2.

“Our Scholarship programme was created to meet our growing demand for helicopter pilots and flight instructors, and has proven to be the biggest single investment in the future of our industry that we as a company have made,” Head of Training, Captain Sarah Bowen explains.

Successful UK Bell 505 Launch

Helix AV reported a very well supported UK launch event for the Bell 505 JetRanger X at White Waltham Airfield base on April 21. More than 100 people attended, with 22 aircraft flying in (including two fixed-wing aircraft).

Guests were able to have a first close-up look at the Bell 505 and enjoy a brief flying display with the arrival of G-DONE, which flew in to the launch event.

Also present at the event were a range of support service providers, including Hayward Aviation; Lombard; Paragon Bank; Heliwork; AS Aerospace; and Safran.

“The launch event went seamlessly,” Hayley Ash, Customer Service Manager, Helix AV told GA Buyer Europe. “White Waltham Airfield worked really well as the location.

“We have received a lot of positive feedback from those who attended who have said it was a well put together and enjoyable day. And, of course, there was a lot of buzz around the 505.”

The five-seat Bell 505, offering a glass cockpit, was developed with safety, efficiency and reliability at its core. Multi-mission capable, the rotorcraft is powered by a dual channel FADEC Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine and boasts a top cruise of 125kts.

Following the event, one guest took to social media to remark how genuinely exciting it was to see the new Bell 505 in the flesh, and predict a busy time ahead for Helix AV on the sales front.
