From the earliest days of aviation, paper charts have helped pilots determine their positions, safe altitudes and efficient routes, in addition to highlighting useful information such as navigational fixes, alternative landing areas and airspace boundaries. Paper was a reliable medium for these charts, because unlike technology reliant upon a power source, the charts remained accessible even in cases of total aircraft electrical failure.
Although the term “tablet,” as a type of personal computer, was first made popular with the Microsoft Tablet PC concept presented by Microsoft in 2001, it was a decade later that the release of a tablet device from Apple Inc. put the technology into the hands of the masses. Like many business people, aviation industry leaders considered how tablets might positively impact operations and communication. A landmark precedent was set in February 2011 when the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the in-flight use of Apple’s tablet by charter company Executive Jet Management. Following a rigorous approval process, which included rapid-decompression testing at 51,000 feet, pilots were authorized to use iPads equipped with a Jeppesen electronic chart app in lieu of paper charts. In the months following the initial FAA approval, many business aircraft operators in the U.S. applied for approved tablet usage – some with Jeppesen’s assistance. The aviation company continues to work closely with industry and government authorities from around the globe to ensure quality and streamline adoption.
A: The app is available to general and business aviation customers with a JeppView or NavSuite data subscription at no additional charge. Customers may use one of their four JeppView site keys for this application. Note: Express Coverage options are available for JeppView subscriptions, providing low-cost options for general and business aviation customers.
A Practical Solution: MOBILE FLITEDECK Mobile FliteDeck is an interactive flight app that provides pilots with immediate, direct and reliable access to enroute chart data, IFR and VFR terminal charts and Jeppesen Airway Manual text scaled to fit their subscription areas.
Q: How does Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck compare to Jeppesen Mobile TC? A: Jeppesen Mobile TC supports only Terminal Charts. Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck supports terminal charts, enroute, and Jeppesen Airway Manual text. When enabled, Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck can also show “own-ship” position on enroute charts and airport diagrams.

Because an airport operates much like a small town, there are a wide variety of duties. From entry-level to upper management, there are many different types of job opportunities available in many different fields.
At general aviation airports (as well as those with airline service), you would find: Aircraft Mechanics and Service Technicians: These employees work to diagnose and repair any aircraft maintenance issues. In addition to mechanical work, there are also cleaning technicians who work to keep the aircraft clean and tidy and technicians who re-stock the aircraft with food and beverages. These workers also help guide the aircraft in and out of the terminal. At FBOs, they provide scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters.

The departure city crew is responsible for making sure all baggage makes it from the flight check-in point to the correct aircraft, and the arrival city crew is responsible for making sure the baggage makes it from the aircraft to the correct pick-up spot. Some airlines also offer mail and cargo transportation to clients. Employees in this sector of the airline industry sell cargo space, weigh and track cargo and move cargo from a warehouse location to an airport ramp and onto the correct aircraft. Information Technology (IT) Workers:
Whether it is an electrician, plumber or janitor, airports need these types of workers to keep the airport in top condition.
Since most airline operations are handled via computer, it is necessary for all major airlines to have their own IT departments. Employees in this sector work to trouble-shoot any system operations errors or issues. They also work on creative projects to meet the IT demands of the airline. These employees often work at the airline’s corporate headquarters.
Airport Management:
Airports are always working to improve their operations and property, as well as to manage their investments. Airport managers work in many areas, including finance, construction and general administrative work. All airport project development and implementation is managed by these workers. Design Giotto has completed the coaming design, and the pattern is now being machined. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also completed the design of the main undercarriage leg and the front carry-though spar. Meanwhile Juan is focussing on designing the patterns for each part as Giotto completes the design.
Production Rob has already made frame 2, and will soon complete the mould for the canopy. This mould will be sent off to the Czech Republic to make the prototype canopy. Wednesday 1st February 2012, marked one hundred years to the day that the original BE2 prototype made its maiden flight from the Royal Aircraft Factory at Farnborough in the handsof its designer Geoffrey de Havilland. A century on, the “Biggles Biplane” BE-2 replica is a flying tribute to the world’s first purpose designed military aeroplane, which in 1912 represented the cutting edge of technology. A few months after its first flight, the BE established a new altitude record of over 10,500 feet. More importantly, it was also the world’s first naturally stable aeroplane. Earlier designs such as the Bleriot and Boxkite are unstable in all three axes and require constant pilot input to remain on an even keel.
Coincidentally, the Squadron continues to operate its Tornado jets from RAF Marham (a former BE2 base) on similar reconnaissance duties to those first envisaged for the BE2. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the aircraft have once again been “the eyes of the Army”, one hundred years on. In May 2012, “Biggles Biplane” will help celebrate 100 years since the creation of the Royal Flying Corps. Already the aircraft has become a popular sight at air shows around the UK as it pays tribute to the pioneer days of British aviation.
The Brief Story of Biggles Biplane Built at Sywell in 1969 for a Biggles film, the aircraft is a replica of a WW1 BE2c observation biplane, Britain’s first purpose-built military aeroplane. It was also used in TV series such as BBC TV’s ‘Wings’. Shipped to the USA, the aircraft flew until a crash in 1977. The remains were ‘lost’ until discovered in 2005, in a barn in upstate New York.

The BE was designed for aerial observation and its ability to fly hands-off allowed pilots to sketch military dispositions on a speciallydeveloped drawing board in the cockpit, in the days preceding aerial photography.
Stephen Slater and Matthew Boddington, son of the aircraft’s original constructor Charles Boddington, acquired the wreck and returned it to Sywell. After six years of restoration, Biggles Biplane took to the air again in May 2011.
Among other distinctive features of the BE-2 are its large diameter wheels and undercarriage skids. In the absence of airfields, these allowed it to meet an Army requirement to be able to land on rough, even ploughed, fields! Centurion 4.0 Engine
Since starting production ten years ago, the jet fuel aircraft engines from the Centurion series have achieved some notable accomplishments. Now they have crossed a new record threshold: Centurion engines have logged over 3 million flight hours by the end of 2011. Being far the most flown jet fuel piston engines in the world, they consistently prove their reliability and economy in the General Aviation and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) applications. The company has also announced its contract partnership with AeroDiesel Baltics as a sales partner for Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, and Kazakhstan. Four additional Service Centers are also expanding the service network in China. Based in the city of Lichtenstein in Saxony, Germany, Centurion Aircraft Engines AG & Co. KG, the market leader for diesel aircraft engines in General Aviation, has announced that engines from the Centurion series have exceeded 3 million flight hours by the end of 2011. "About 1.4 million of these flight hours were logged by the Centurion 1.7, whose market launch in 2002 provided the necessary momentum for developing alternative propulsion systems for small aircraft and UAVs. The other 1.6 million flight hours were logged with the successors that are series-produced today: the Centurion 2.0 and Centurion 2.0s," explains Centurion CEO Jasper M. Wolffson. He is also pleased with the continuing expansion of the sales and service network. There are now 330 service centers located around the globe. Engines from the Centurion series are characterized by their excellent economy and reliability. They all have the same weight and, unlike those of competitors, are specifically designed to be installed into existing cowlings. This makes application in various manned and unmanned aerial vehicles possible, as well as making the switch from a Centurion 1.7 to a Centurion 2.0 or 2.0s a technically simple issue.

Cambridge Airport has this month further consolidated its position as a dedicated East of England aviation hub as new tenant, international flight training organisation Pilot Training College (PTC) confirms CAA approval on its Boeing 737 simulator. Approval of the remaining professional pilot training courses is expected shortly. The recent installation of the Boeing 737 NGW simulator in hangar one took eight weeks to complete. Constructed from an actual 737 cockpit, the simulator is fitted with a CFM-567B26 Engine Simulation Model and certified to a FNPTII-MCC level. Centurion engines have shown above-average reliability. According to the information from the FAA, an engine fails in flight every 10,000 flight hours in General Aviation. The failure rate with Centurion engines is considerably lower than that figure – by more than 50 percent. As a technological progression from the 1.7, all the knowledge gained from the experience with this predecessor was naturally incorporated into the development of the Centurion 2.0. For example, the lifetime of the Centurion 2.0 is 1500 hours surpassing the one of the 1.7 by 50 percent. The lifetime of the clutch’s current design level for the diesel engines Centurion 2.0 and Centurion 2.0s has been extended from 300 to 600 hours. For this reason, the exchange of the friction disk after 300 hours is no longer necessary for all Centurion 2.0 and 2.0s which are equipped with the current clutch design. The current gearbox is also designed for this lifetime and is awaiting official authorization for extension. "Centurion engines are viable for the future from both an economic and an ecological perspective as they can run on standard jet fuel (Jet A) and do not rely on aviation gasoline (avgas)," says Jasper M. Wolffson. "Along with independence from avgas, Centurion engines offer a wide range of 'green' values: They do not emit any lead, and nitrogen and hydrocarbon emissions are considerably lower than their avgas counterparts. Additionally, Centurion engines consume less fuel and fulfill stringent noise pollution requirements. Recently, the jet fuel standard ASTM 1655 was expanded to allow blends of components that have been manufactured using the Fischer-Tropsch method or of biological fats. Operators of Centurion engines are on the safe side: The engines are perfectly suited for fuels with semi-synthetic or biofuel components. Even future fully synthetic fuels will not present any problem."
Centurion’s Clutch Lifetime Doubled to 600 hours Centurion Aircraft Engines have achieved a further milestone in the lifetime extension programme for components of their Centurion piston aircraft engines. The lifetime of the clutch’s current design level for the diesel engines Centurion 2.0 and Centurion 2.0s has been extended from 300 to 600 hours. For this reason, the exchange of the friction disk after 300 hours is no longer necessary for all Centurion 2.0 and 2.0s which are equipped with the current clutch design. pilots. The SIM is fitted with TCAS-27.0, Weather Radar, EGPWS, DEU, Dual FMC, Dual GPS, plus many pre-programmed system faults and failures for training. The simulator represents a substantial investment for Pilot Training College in the United Kingdom bringing another level of training experience to the airport. Pilot Training College will also base a fleet of Piper Seminole aircraft at the airport that will enable training up to Multi-engine Instrument Rating Standard and it expects to receive delivery of a FNPTII procedural trainer which it will use to train to MEIR standard. The Boeing 737 simulator at Cambridge will be used to train to Multi-Crew Co-operation and Jet Orientation standard which is necessary in helping students transition to larger multi-crew turboprop and jet aircraft. The training period for the Multi-Crew Cooperation Course is approximately eight days. Pilot Training College expects to train up to 300 pilots next year; a significant proportion of which will be streamed through the Cambridge Training Centre.

Cessna has rolled out its 400th Citation Mustang off the assembly line at its Independence, Kansas, USA facility. This milestone was accomplished in a little more than five years since the Mustang’s first delivery in November 2006. “What an achievement for Cessna and for the employees in Wichita and Independence who engineer, design, support and manufacture this great airplane,” said Brian Rohloff, Cessna's Citation Mustang and M2 business leader. "Mustang sales remain strong, pilots like its ease of operation and low operating costs — it’s a compelling airplane, designed and built with Cessna ingenuity and pride.” The Mustang's most common use is corporate business or personal travel. Its second most common use is air taxi service. In growing popularity, the Mustang is also being used for special missions as medical air transport and as an airline flight training tool.
“Having the Mustang in our fleet is a great way to get pilots into a jet for the first time - when they get behind the controls, the excitement is written all over their face,” said Rohloff. “Then, when they are ready to move up, the rest of our Citation fleet is right there waiting.” The worldwide fleet of Mustangs is averaging 480 hours, with 45 Mustangs having accumulated more than 1,000 hours each. since World War II, according to Superior Area Chamber of Commerce President Dave Miner. “Six-hundred is a reasonable number and we hope to eventually have even more,” added Kestrel chairman and CEO Alan Klapmeier, who also co-founded Duluth-based Cirrus Aircraft. Superior’s effort to recruit Kestrel began in July last year, according to Mayor Bruce Hagen. A package of generous incentives helped lure Kestrel to Superior. Construction will begin on Kestrel’s Winter Street composite plant this spring and in 2013 on the Bong Airport assembly plant. Its headquarters will remain in Brunswick, Maine, where it has a 10-year lease on 93,000 - square-feet of hangar space at the former Naval Air Station. It’s unclear what aspect of manufacturing would occur in Maine versus Superior. In an October 20 story, however, The Reader Weekly reported the Maine facility might be used for a separate Kestrel division that will refurbish aircraft made by other firms. Session 2: This session was an open forum discussion with a focus on the JSSI-Broker/Dealer relationship and opportunities that mutually benefit their respective businesses. “At JSSI we’re always looking for new ways to keep our clients flying efficiently and cost effectively, anywhere in the world,” Seno outlined. “That’s why we introduced JSSI Platinum in the Spring of 2010. “We didn’t stop at JSSI Platinum. We know that when engines go in for overhaul, owners can find themselves without their aircraft for up to three months. And so JSSI introduced ‘Supplemental Lift’ during last year’s NBAA Convention. This provides reimbursement for charter aircraft to keep owners flying, in the event that rental engines are unavailable while their own engines are in the shop for overhaul.” Early this year it became evident that JSSI Supplemental Lift wasn’t enough. Its clients needed more access to loaner engines. The only way to solve the problem was for JSSI to expand the small rental engine pool by investing in two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines that will be available for its clients. Additional news of interest is that JSSI has been elected as a new member of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), and Seno has been invited to serve on the GAMA Board of Directors. This represents a 0.3% decreased over October and the return of a positive trend after several months of leveling off. For turbo-props, 10.2% of the worldwide fleet is currently for sale, which represents a 0.5% decrease from Q3.

In Q3 2011 business turbo-prop resale retail transaction activity showed positive growth whereas the business jets took a small step backwards. These roles were reversed for Q4. In this latest quarter, 2.5% of the worldwide fleet of business Jets changed ownership via resale retail transactions, making it the best performing quarter for 2011, slightly edging Q4 2010 (2,4%). By contrast, resale retail transactions in the turbo-prop market decreased from 2.6% in Q3 to 2.4% in Q4 coming in just below the Q4 2010 performance (2.5%). In both market segments, Q4 resale retail transaction activity was below the 20-year averages of 3% for jets and 3.2% for turbo-props.
On this most recent activity, Tom Benson, Executive Vice President of AMSTAT noted that “the past two years have been marked by slow improvements, often interrupted by periods of leveling off, and even setbacks…It would be nice to see a full calendar year of uninterrupted improvements, even if small in magnitude. During 2011 the company delivered just over 500 helicopters, generating a turnover of €5.4 billion the first time the manufacturers turnover has exceeded the €5 billion mark. Orders also increased from 346 during 2010 to 457, with the most significant orders from the light Ecureuil and EC130 family, of which 238 were sold. Orders for the EC145 light-twin have doubled, helped by the launch of the EC145 T2. During 2011, the majority of the company’s turnover came from the civil market. Just over half of the turnover was a result of helicopter production, but Bertling also noted the importance of the company’s customer support side of the business, which now represented some 38% of the firm’s turnover up from 33% just a year before.

Eurocopter’s CEO Lutz Bertling has high confidence that the world civil helicopter market is making a strong recovery. Speaking at the company’s press conference in Paris on 24 January, Bertling said he was optimistic the market was returning to boom years of 2007 and 2008 when manufacturers were enjoying large backlogs of orders.
In the meantime, the company is progressing with the development of the Dauphin replacement, the X4; drawings showing the configuration were shown at the event and were exactly the same at those published inside an in-house magazine produced by Safran in mid2011. The UK is advancing its plans for a National Police Air Service (NPAS), with the government getting ready to mandate those forces standing in the project's way. The plans for NPAS represent a radical shake-up in the way British police forces provide air support.

Rather than each force having its own helicopter patrolling its region, the new national service will be responsible for the whole of England and Wales and be operated from one central command centre. While the plan has the approval of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and most of the UK police authorities, several have expressed alarm at the proposals and turned down entry to the project. The NPAS plan is to reduce the number of aircraft in England and Wales from the current 31 across 29 bases to 23 (plus three spares) across 20 geographically evenly spread bases. This means that, under the NPAS basing structure, helicopters will be distributed more efficiently, so that at least one aircraft is able to reach 56% of the country’s population within ten minutes, 87% in 15 minutes and 99% within a 35-minute flight time. It is hoped that the scheme will shave around £15 million a year from the current annual air support cost of £70 million.
