Friedrichshafen – The home base of Europe's general aviation celebrates its birthday: In April 2017 (April 5 - 8), AERO will embark on its 25th anniversary flight. As Europe's leading trade show for general aviation, AERO also enjoys a strong international reputation. At Lake Constance, manufacturers and companies of the general aviation sector will be displaying their latest products and innovations, covering the entire range from gliders and ultralights to business jets. Members of the supply chain will also be among the exhibitors. AERO Friedrichshafen has become an annual “must-attend” event for over 600 international exhibitors and 33,000 visitors, including pilots, aviation experts and journalists. The public will see world firsts and European firsts, with about 700 journalists from around the world reporting on new developments in aviation: "AERO is general aviation's showcase for innovations and new products, and the close proximity between exhibition grounds and airport also gives our venue a major advantage", says AERO project director Roland Bosch.

Rapid rise

With a special e-flight flying display and the e-flight expo, the focus on electric aircraft will be even stronger and more comprehensive than before. Attention will also be given to other special theme areas such as Avionics Avenue, the Engine Area and the UAS Expo/AERODrones for civilian drones and unmanned aircraft. With its broad, comprehensive range and the many new and innovative products that exhibitors have announced for the show, AERO is one of the world’s most important general aviation trade shows.

At the time, Europe had no comparable trade show for general aviation, so exhibitor numbers immediately doubled in the second year. Further years saw steady growth in the number of exhibitors and visitors, with continual two-digit percentage increases. By the mid-80s, AERO had exceeded RMF in both size and importance. Because of its international significance, AERO was added to the UFI, the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry, in 1985.

Meeting place for the General Aviation community

AERO first began with gliders in 1977. Supported by a booming ultralight aircraft sector, the trade show grew at a tremendous rate. In recent years, the Business Aviation segment also enjoyed significant growth. AERO now covers the industry's complete spectrum and is one of the world's most important trade shows for general aviation, which includes all flying machines except for military aircraft and large airliners.

While AERO had already established an international presence in sports aviation by the early 1980s, increased activities led to new growth areas in the 1990s. This has resulted in strong expansion for the trade show in recent years, especially in avionics, aircraft maintenance and other services, as well as business aviation. In the global market for general aviation, AERO has become a major meeting place for the industry.

1993: First stand-alone AERO

Around 600 exhibitors from 28 countries will occupy more than 80,000 m2 of exhibition space at Friedrichshafen's trade show grounds, representing the full range of general aviation. Major focus will be on business jets, single and twin-engine airplanes, light jets, sports aviation with an extensive range of gliders and ultralights as well as avionics, aircraft maintenance and other services, and pilot supplies. According to trade fair surveys, the typical AERO visitor is a highly qualified professional seeking new technologies, products and industry contacts. More than half of all AERO visitors hold one or more pilot licenses.

1977: Launch with 14 exhibitors AERO Friedrichshafen first began as part of the regional motorsports exhibition RMF. In 1977, that trade show included for the first time some 14 exhibitors who presented gliders and pilot supplies. Audience response was much stronger than organizers expected. Ernst Haller, the former CEO of Messe Friedrichshafen, was the initiator of the first aviation trade show. Roland Bosch, the current AERO project director, came on board in 1988 and has continued developing it. 18 GA BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2017

It was only a matter of time before AERO separated from its “mother trade fair” and continued forwards as a stand-alone aviation event. The jump to becoming a full-blown trade fair happened in 1993. The success of AERO Friedrichshafen has depended not only on its strategic concept as a trade show specifically tailored to the needs of general aviation and with a clearly defined target group, but also on Friedrichshafen’s reputation as a cradle of aviation. The early days saw major aircraft builders such as Zeppelin, Dornier, Kober and Maybach manufacturing their airships, seaplanes, engines and airplanes here at Lake Constance, thus establishing the image and expertise of Messe Friedrichshafen in all aspects of aviation. International corporations such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Dornier, ZF, Zeppelin Metallwerke and Zeppelin Luftschiffbau all have roots in Friedrichshafen, and operate today as leaders in the aviation industry and other high-tech areas. The year 2012 saw a major anniversary in this field: 100 years of seaplane construction at Lake Constance.

2002: Move to new exhibition site Another significant turning point in AERO’s development was the move of Messe Friedrichshafen to its new facilities in 2002, right next to the airport. The new site has a much better infrastructure, offering excellent opportunities for the aviation trade show to develop and expand.

Exhibitors can taxi their airplanes from the runway right into the exhibition halls, using a purpose-built road that provides direct access to the airport facilities. German aviation services provider Atlas Air Service has received FAA certification as a Part 145 repair station and is now authorized to perform limited repairs on U.S.-registered aircraft for accessories, airframe, instruments and power plants, as well as nondestructive inspection, testing and processing. The Bremen-based MRO also carries authorizations from EASA and Russian, Ukrainian and Georgian aviation authorities. “With this extension of approval coverage, we can immediately offer the entire service package for N-registered aircraft as a full repair station: maintenance, repairs and regular inspections in accordance with FAR 91.409(f)(3); pitot-static and transponder checks for Citations, Embraers and King Airs; and EASA form one dual release,” said Atlas quality manager Bernd Dummer. In addition, Atlas operates shops in Ganderkesee, Paderborn and Augsburg. GI Aviation's first PC-12NG inaugurated official operations by landing on the sea runway at Sky Dive Dubai recently, less than two months after receiving its air operator certificate (AOC) from the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority. General manager Marios Belidis said the company's first revenue flight took place on January 9, adding that several demonstration flights would culminate with the airline’s full operational launch on February 26. “GI Aviation is the first company to operate the PC-12 in the region and is pioneering an all-new business model for the Gulf,” Belidis said. “Our goal is to deliver a competitively priced, reliable private charter service that will encourage new clients into this sector.” Finland-based Hendell Aviation, which has operated a similar PC-12 service in its home country since 2013, served as consultant to GI Aviation on the award of its AOC. ■ More information from: www.gi-aviation.com

First Private Aviation Membership Club for Germany Germany will get its first private aviation membership club with the anticipated launch of the JetEight “all you can fly” service in July, “partnering with leading private aircraft operators” and charging members €2,500 ($2,679) a month. JetEight was “initiated” by students at the ESMT business school in Berlin, the company said in a statement issued last week. The number eight in its name reflects the expected passenger load per flight. JetEight’s initial focus will be on Europe, and the club will use “small private jets from lowertraffic terminals,” but also VIP terminals at major airports. It is currently looking at connecting the German business centers of Berlin, Zurich and Frankfurt, “with additional cities to follow.” The company suggested that time savings could average an hour per flight by avoiding the “ever longer” waiting times at commercial airports. According to JetEight founder Ruben Portz, “This is the future of short-haul business travel—fly as much as you want for a fixed monthly fee, and get unlimited access at private terminals and jets.” Portz reflected that JetEight is “the result of European carriers losing focus on value and underserving their business-class passengers. Trying to compete with low-cost carriers, they simply forgot what short-haul business class stands for. Whereas the business traveler would like to travel quickly from A to B, he or she ends up in dreadful security checks, slow boarding procedures and waiting for transfer passengers.” As an incentive for travelers to sign up, JetEight said that initial members will be “reimbursed” for flights taken with airlines, to compensate for the JetEight network being limited to start with. ■ More information from: www.JetSmarter.com

Turkish Operator Buys Learjet 45XR for VIP Work

Redstar, a leading Turkish operator has taken delivery of a Learjet 45XR, which it will use for VIP transportation. The company acquired its first LR45 last February for medical work. General manager Emre Dursun says that demand for the first unit was high: "Everything was going very well, so we decided to invest in a second one. After researching the market extensively we agreed that this aircraft was the right one for our purposes. We are an air ambulance company and we were looking for an aircraft to be used in this way.

How to Get the Best from Your Jet Maintenance

Would You Argue with a Part Replacement? Aviation Director Andre Fodor concludes his discussion on ways to improve the service level of jet maintenance to meet the expectations of corporate aviators and managers… The Hippocratic Oath leaves no doubt of a doctor’s prime directive: Do no harm. When in doubt, cause no hurt. Like medicine, aviation requires highly-skilled professionals with advanced skills and years of specialization - and a physician’s approach to helping patients. Naturally, we want the most experienced technicians to work on our airplanes; those able to swiftly get to the root cause of our pesky maintenance issues. It’s a fact that technology, accumulated experiences and software-driven analysis have changed troubleshooting. Located at the OEM’s headquarters often are teams that focus on fielding calls and dispensing guidance to get airplanes back aloft and into revenue mode. Surely that’s a move in the right direction, but it’s a move that can also have adverse effects since troubleshooting and investigation is taken away from the on-site technician and may be replaced by aggressive parts-swapping.

Too Great Expectations? Several years ago, I took delivery of a brand new large cabin jet and negotiated an all-inclusive parts and labour program. Knowing that a new airplane would have the maintenance challenges covered, I felt confident that there was a vast network of experienced technicians and service centers able to help us manage and correct our discrepancies. As anticipated, issues cropped up. It was something of a letdown, however, to note how quickly orders for expensive parts were placed to be delivered by the fastest (and expensive) courier services. I could visualize dollar signs flying away from our wallet, and I quickly became unhappy with this approach. Clearly my expectations and the OEM’s were not aligned. I expected that with years working on a specific aircraft type, experienced technicians would grab their tool boxes, arrive on the scene and troubleshoot our airplane. Instead, parts-swapping seemed to take precedence. Why, you might ask, should I care if the fix came under warranty and all parts and labour charges were covered? Well, neither the warranty nor the maintenance contracts guaranteed that a faulty part would be replaced with a new part. We risked ending up with a high-time, refurbished part installed on our brand new business jet. 32 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE MARCH 2017 WWW.AVBUYER.COM

Adding insult to injury, due to the parts-swapping merry-go-round, once we had installed the same serial number part that had been exchanged during an earlier maintenance event. It found its way back on our aircraft because the tear down report accompanying the part stated ‘no fault found’. In essence, although the parts don’t cost anything, we wanted to prevent our airplane from becoming a ‘Frankenstein’s Monster’ of exchanged parts, adding reams of paperwork to the aircraft’s logbook and lowering the residual value.

Don’t Be Afraid to Disagree In another instance, we once had a fuel pump that faulted randomly on a wide-cabin jet. At sixty eight thousand dollars (and eight hours of labour), replacing it should have been the last option following exhaustive troubleshooting efforts. Alas, it was the very first thing proposed. Disagreeing, I requested that more time be taken to investigate and find the root of the problem. My request paid off. A bare wire was found that, when exposed to different temperatures, grounded and failed the system. A few minutes of wire splicing remedied a pesky issue, simultaneously saving the OEM serious money. I have been asked why I’m such a stickler for having technicians troubleshoot before exchanging parts. My answer is highlighted above. From a dollars and cents perspective, fixing in lieu of replacing saves everyone big money while maintaining the integrity of the airplane.

Consider This… If the fixed cost Parts and Labour Programs can’t be profitable, the only solution available is for the OEM or provider of the service contract to raise their price, which will impact each of our own bottom lines. Just as applicable, warranty work performed to fix manufacturing flaws will raise costs and cause the parts pool to dwindle. If doctors follow the Hippocratic Oath as a guideline to their actions, why should we not apply the same principles to our aircraft maintenance? I am all for technological enhancements and the development of tools that optimize and reduce maintenance hurdles. That approach is positive. But we should also balance those tools with our natural talents and our years of hands-on experience.

Exhaust Valve Sticking – What’s the @!*)&% deal? Have you ever had a stuck valve? Ever had a terribly shaky startup that suddenly smooths out? Exhaust valve sticking can be an inconvenience or a serious problem, such as a bent pushrod and broken pushrod tube that allows all the oil to drain from the engine. The important thing is to determine early on that you have a sticky valve and do something about it before the worst happens.

Lycoming states the maximum allowable CHT is 500˚F while Continental says 460˚F, but both prefer to see a max cruise temperature of 400˚F. And I agree. As to a lower limit, they really don’t specify.

HOT SIDE

But, what is “too cool” and why? Just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. It seems that human nature has taken over once again when it comes to Cylinder Head Temperatures (CHTs) on our airplane engines. If 380˚ is better than 400˚ then 350˚ must be better than 380˚ and then 300˚ must be better than 350˚. Unlike our water-cooled car engines, we have some say when it comes to CHTs in our airplanes. Throttle, mixture, cowl flaps and airspeed put some control in our hands and what we do with it has consequences in terms of engine reliability and cylinder life.

Valve sticking may show up in multiple ways. It most often presents as morning sickness, the uncontrolled engine shake when the engine is first started. As engine heat is transferred to the non-operational cylinder, the valve often releases and the cylinder springs back to life and smoothness returns. Many pilots treats this as a fouled spark plug, it is not. A bad plug will show up during a mag check. Any sign of morning sickness should be addressed with your mechanic immediately. It can also show up while making a power change while either descending or leveling off after a climb. It can be a subtle shudder due to intermittent sticking or it may stick solid and bring the cylinder off-line with the attention grabbing roughness. Engine analyzers will show wildly fluctuating EGTS and CHTs before the cylinder goes cold. Over the years, much has been said and many articles have been written about valve sticking in piston aircraft engines. Many “solutions” have been tried - ranging from major hardware changes to miracles-in-a-can, but the problem persists.

The race to the bottom, low CHTs, has evolved because of the confluence of several factors. One we have engine analyzers that inform us, literally to the degree, what the CHTs, EGTs and TITs are doing during every phase of flight. Two, we have the GAMI gurus that have opened our eyes to the wonder of LOP operations, like the airlines used to run their big radials. You can run cooler, cleaner and save fuel. And three, you have human nature, if less is better, then a lot less is a lot better (the flipped side of “if some is good then more is better”) .

What is valve sticking? The exhaust valves rides in special tubes called valve guides (figure 1). They are shown installed in a cylinder in a cut away picture (figure 2). One end of the valve and guide is exposed to very hot combustion/exhaust gasses (Hot Side), while the other end is bathed in relatively cool motor oil (Cool Side). The valve stem fits snugly into the valve guide. If enough deposit form on the valve stem or in the guide, the valve stem sticks in the guide. There is good news and bad when it comes to sticky/stuck valves: The bad news is that there are two separate reasons for exhaust valve sticking Hot Side & Cool Side deposits. They are very different. The good news is we understand them both and minimizing them just involves subtle changes in engine operation and routine maintenance.

Most everyone, including pilots, engine manufacturers and oil companies, widely (and wildly) misunderstand the causes of this problem. As a fuels and lubes chemist and longtime gearhead, let me try to shed some light on this issue.

The exhaust valve environment To say that exhaust valves operate under severe conditions is a colossal understatement. The valves seal against controlled cylinder explosions with temperatures up to 4000˚F & pressures up to 1200PSI. And then, they have to survive jets of 2000˚+F exhaust gas blazing past the open valve, at up to 25 times per second!

The convergence of these three effects has brought about a noticeable uptick in exhaust valve sticking reports. And while every engine is susceptible to this scourge, it is Lycoming engines that have most of the problems with this issue. Lately however, valve sticking has been reported in normally aspirated large bore Continental engines (470’s, 520’s and 550’s). This “Hot Side” example is the more common type of valve sticking, caused when lead compounds crystallize on the tulip end of valve stem, exposed to the hot exhaust stream. This deposit gets forced into the valve guide where it reduces the stem/guide clearance until the valve sticks. The $64,000 question is what causes this kind of deposit to form in the first place and why is it seeming rearing its ugly head more often now.

The difference in temperature between the Hot Side and Cool Side of the exhaust valve can be as much as 1500˚F. The tulip end of the valve and guide are hot while the other side is much cooler as it’s bathed in engine oil.

I will delve further into the explanation of the Hot Side deposits, introduce the Cool Side deposits as well as how best to mitigate these problems in Part 2.

It is the heat along with the distinctive chemical activities at each end of the valve guide, which can lead to deposit formation and valve sticking. These are distinct unique phenomena.

On December 23, 2016 R66 S/N 0763 became the 12,000th helicopter to roll off Robinson Helicopter’s production line. “A nice way to end the year,” said Robinson President, Kurt Robinson. S/N 0763 will be delivered to Hover Dynamics, one of three long-time Robinson dealers in South Africa. The helicopter was purchased by a new charter and tour operator, Fly Karoo Air Services, operating in the area of Graaff-Reinet. According to Dean Feldman of Hover Dynamics, Fly Karoo chose the R66 because of its powerful turbine engine, quieter cabin, spacious baggage compartment, and low operating costs. The contract covers from classic engines up to MAKILA model. SIKORSKY S-76D VIP HELICOPTER RECEIVES EXPANDED EASA CERTIFICATION The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has completed a second phase of validations for new capabilities and expanded performance of the Sikorsky S-76D helicopter. The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Air Show and Sikorsky expects to make its first delivery to a European VIP customer by the end of this year. The newly validated capabilities focus on cabin comfort and cockpit architecture. The Silencer® wall panel system is approved for the eight-passenger deluxe VIP/executive interior for improved cabin acoustics, along with C4 air conditioning to provide advanced climate control.

Swiss Rotor Solutions Wins EASA STC for View Kit

Swiss Rotor Solutions announced that the MAXIMUM PILOT VIEW KIT, the next generation aerial work safety and visibility solution for the Airbus H125 / AS350 helicopter family, has received Supplemental Type Certification (STC No. 10060578) from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). The MAXIMUM PILOT VIEW KIT (MPVK) revolutionizes pilot visibility and operational safety via a completely new design, providing the pilot with an uninhibited field of view below and to the RH side of the aircraft. The modification adds a new single piece bubble door to the aircraft, offering a significant increase in lateral visibility, and pilot headroom when leaning to the right, even when wearing a helmet. A large lower viewing aperture and transparent fuselage window fairing significantly increases the vertical field of view forward, aft and directly underneath the aircraft by a factor of ten, compared to existing solutions. The MPVK dramatically improves the capability and safety to perform demanding operations such as sling loading, fire-fighting, SAR/EMS, confined area operations,

aerial survey, seismic, law enforcement and any other tasks performed in close proximity to terrain, obstacles and ground crews or when operating at remote anding sites. To date, Swiss Rotor Solutions has received multiple orders and is ready to supply and support installation throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
