GLIDER/BANNER TOWING With the glider & banner towing option, gliders with a maximum weight of 600 kg can be towed. Instead of traditional mirrors, a camera and monitor can be installed allowing visual contact with the glider. The aircraft can also be equipped with a device to pick-up a banner from a gate.
POWER UNIT The ROTAX 912 iS Sport is a modern 100 HP fuel injected engine with electronic ignition. It offers up to 30% lower fuel consumption compared with carburettor equipped engines with the same power rating. An added benefit is simplified servicing, eliminating the need for carburettor synchronisation.
AVIONICS An economical combination of modern, lightweight avionics and conventional analogue navigation instruments, supplemented with an integrated GARMIN G5 display. An 8.33 kHz Radio and Mode S transponder with a large GARMIN 795 GPS display unit provide an optimal solution for most applications.
WING FUEL TANKS The aircraft can be equipped with optional laminate fuel tanks located in each wing. The fuel capacity of each wing tank is 55 litres, significantly increasing endurance. Wing tanks can replace the centrally located 75 litre fuselage tank, allowing more freedom in the location of panel instruments. LED LIGHTS The aircraft is equipped with modern WHELEN Orion 600 LED integrated navigation lights, strobes and anti-collision light. Landing and taxi lights are also LED, with lower power consumption placing less demands on the electrical system. VFR-Night operations are approved.
MTOW The maximum take-off and landing weight is 600 kg with a manoeuvring load factor of +4.0/-2.0 G. The MTOW has been increased by 18 kg, compared to AT-3R100 aircraft. The maximum weight and load factors satisfy both VLA & LSA standards.
WHEELS AND BRAKES The simplified BERINGER tubeless tyres and braking system allow for a weight saving of 6 kg, compared to previous AT-3 variants.
AERO AT aviation technology is a globally renowned designer and manufacturer of metal 2-seater aircraft incorporating laminate elements. Piston shipments represented the largest segment in the 2016 Year-End GAMA report with 1,019 airplanes delivered. Of the 15 OEMs reporting deliveries to GAMA, five had improved numbers over 2015, seven had falling numbers, and three were even. The largest OEM by far was Cirrus, which contributed 317 pistonpowered airplanes to the total in 2016, including 91 in Q4 2016 alone. This represents a 5.3% increase over the 301 units Cirrus delivered in 2015. Second place in piston deliveries went to Cessna, with 217 units for the year (including 90 in Q4 2016). Cessna’s numbers are down from 2015 when it delivered a total of 271 piston-powered aircraft (and 111 in Q4 2015).

Following Cirrus and Cessna, the major players in the piston market were Tecnam and Piper, with 86 units and 80 respectively, followed by Diamond with 68. Piper’s total was down slightly from its 2015 shipments (and its Q4 2016 total of 24 was well below the 45 reported in Q4 2015). Tecnam, by comparison, was up 26.5% over its Q4 2015 total. Diamond’s 68 shipments represented a downturn from the 97 reported for 2015, but its Q4 2016 shipments were up (22 units versus 19 the year before). Piston twin sales were up 17.3% at 129 units, from 110 in 2015. Three of the four piston twin makers had improved numbers in 2016, with Diamond leading the way. Tecnam was second with Textron’s Beechcraft third. Only fourth-placed Piper trailed its 2015 total. While the piston market is lagging overall, market leader Cirrus certainly won’t be disappointed in how things are going today. ■ More information from www.gama.aero

Luigi â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ginoâ&#x20AC;? Pascale began building and flying model aeroplanes with his brother in the 1930s with his last design, the Tecnam P2012 Traveller currently undergoing flight testing. The brothers built their first aircraft together, the P48 Astore, which had its maiden flight on April 2, 1951 before going on the build a number of other successful aircraft. Life was busy for Professor Pascale as he graduated with a Mastersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Degree in Mechanical Engineering and gained his pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s licence in 1951, before becoming a Professor in 1957. In 1957 he founded Partenavia and began building general aviation planes for everyone with the popular P64 Oscar and the P66 becoming a hugely successful training aircraft leading on to the innovative P68 light twin design. Later Luigi, together with his brother Giovanni, set up Tecnam in 1986 and their first design the P92 was released and has gone on to fly 200,000 hours with more than 2,500 in service worldwide.

Tecnam Begins Production of Second Test P2012

Tecnam has begun production of the second P2012 with an eye on a 2018 certification, says launch customer Cape Air, a regional airline that plans to replace 80 Cessna 402s and Britten-Norman Islanders with the P2012. Vice-president of fleet planning James Goddard said the first aircraft delivery could be in early 2019.

Plans by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to enforce changes to how non-commercial pilots and aircrew licences work within the EU have been delayed until April 2019â&#x20AC;Ś A press release issued by EASA in March said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;The European Commission, EASA and the Member States have planned to extend the validity period of this opt-out (... until April 8, 2017) until April 8, 2019.â&#x20AC;? The statement added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pilots holding a licence and an aeromedical certificate issued by a third country (for example the USA) are still allowed to use their licences for non-commercial operation.â&#x20AC;? While some holders of FAA certification(s) who are based in Europe are unsure of what the best course of action may be in the future, EASA has advised pilots and aircrew from non-members states to check with their national issuing authorities on their status to fly. Unique BBMF Tailchase RAF Cosford Air Show has been selected as one of only three shows to host a special 60th celebration involving a unique fly past by the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) on June 11. It will be a great opportunity for spectators at the ever popular event to see a display that will consist of four BBMF fighters performing alongside the ever-popular Avro Lancaster and will include a four ship tailchase and synchro pair display which has been specially planned for the event. As well as the historic aircraft from the BBMF, the flying display will also consist of displays from all the Royal Air Force Display teams, including the Red Arrows and the Typhoon. Unveiled last year, the Canada will replace the Eclipse 550 - but may not be available until late 2018 or early 2019. The Eclipse Canada, will feature longer wings (by two feet on each side), 7% more cabin and 31% more baggage volume, and an anticipated range of roughly 1,400nm. Delving Beneath the Surface of the ‘Dismal’ New Turbine Delivery Numbers The General Aviation Manufacturers Association issued its annual report for 2016 in February and the numbers were not good. Is there more than meets the eye? Mike Potts investigates…
The jet market was off 7.9% from 718 units in 2015 to 661 this year – the lowest total for business jet deliveries since 2004 when jet sales totaled just 591 units. Meanwhile, turboprops (as reported by GAMA) represented a bright spot, finishing 3.4% ahead of 2015 at 576 units. GAMA President and CEO Pete Bunce characterized the results as “disappointing,” although he acknowledged “some blue sky in the turboprop sector”.
Amid the general calamity:

• There are some bright spots in the jet market; and • Traditional turboprops are doing a little better than GAMA’s numbers suggest.
The Jet Market Jet Deliveries: The jet market finished the year with a very typical year-end surge, as 35% of all the jets sold were delivered in Q4. Looking at the specifics, four of the 10 companies delivering business jets last year had better results than in 2015 while six lagged behind their prior year results. Textron’s Cessna unit was the leader in jet deliveries with 178 units for the first time since 2012, surging ahead of Bombardier which in recent years had led the jet market for deliveries by a wide margin. Cessna’s total was up from 166 units in 2015 while Bombardier’s was down from 199 to 163. Embraer captured third place in jet deliveries with 117 units, narrowly edging out Gulfstream which finished with 115. Embraer’s total was down slightly from the 120 reported in 2015, while Gulfstream was down sharply from the 154 it recorded in 2015. Jet Billings: In spite of its 25% reduction in deliveries, Gulfstream held its traditional position as the leader in jet billings, with a total of $6.24bn. Bombardier was second in billings with $5.87bn. Collectively, that makes for $12.1bn in billings between the two billings leaders, or 68.5% of the total market divided between the two leading companies. Gulfstream’s 2015 total was $8.2bn and Bombardier’s was $7.36bn – a collective total of $15.56bn. For 2016 the two companies’ collective billings were down $3.46bn, which equates almost exactly to the $3.4bn that the industry was down in 2016 versus 2015. Segment Trends: Generally speaking, the downturn in oil prices that began about two years ago has taken the buying power away from many of the international customers that fueled the exceptional demand for Large Cabin business jets and dried up a good segment of this market.
That is not to say that the market for Large Cabin business jets has gone away, however. Gulfstream still delivered 88 of its Large Cabin jets and Bombardier 51 of its Global 5000/6000 series, but in 2015 those totals were 120 and 73, respectively. The middle segment of the jet market is still holding up quite nicely, however. For example, in terms of jet units sold Bombardier’s Challenger 350 was second with 62 deliveries, only narrowly beaten by Embraer’s much smaller and less expensive Phenom 300, which had 63 deliveries. Cessna’s largest selling model, meanwhile, was its new super-mid-size Citation Latitude with 42 units reported. For 2017, Cirrus and Honda both report large backlogs that could help to drive the business jet segment back up over the 700 unit total, ensuring 2016 will stand as a low point in business jet deliveries from which the industry can mount a recovery.
The Turboprop Market By most measures turboprops represent the healthiest segment of Business Aviation today. Deliveries of traditional business turboprops (excluding agricultural turboprops) were up 3.9% (431 units, versus 415 for 2015). The 2016 total includes 316 single engine models and 115 twins. Counting both single - and twin-engine production, the largest maker of turboprops is Textron’s Beechcraft unit with 106 deliveries. The company’s 2016 deliveries (all twins) were down, however, from the 117 reported in 2015. In second place is Pilatus, which made 100 deliveries, including 39 in Q4 2016. The Pilatus total was up 35.14% from its 74 delivered a year ago, although its Q4 total was only three units ahead of the 36 recorded in Q4 2015. If Pilatus sales growth continues at its current rate into 2017, it could eclipse Beechcraft as the largest turboprop OEM – a position Beech has held almost continuously since the 1970s. Third place in turboprop deliveries for 2016 is Cessna, with 84 units, including 26 in Q4. Cessna’s total is down from the 102 delivered in 2015. Fourth place went to Daher (54 units), down a single unit from its 2015 total. Daher had 22 in Q4, up from 19 in Q4 2015.
In Summary Overall, then, this year’s version of the final GAMA report for 2016 represents a very mixed bag. With the exception of the very top end of the jet market, the rest of the industry appears to be lurching in a direction that is generally headed toward recovery. Exhaust Valve Sticking – What’s the @!*)&% deal?
Part 3 Cool Side deposits
Compared with automotive engines, our piston aircraft engines are positively filthy. They have huge pistons and cylinders (to produce enough power while turning so slowly) and extremely sloppy clearances (because they’re air-cooled and have horrible temperature regulation).
When these carbon/sludge deposits build up in the exhaust valve guide, they cause (cool side) valve sticking, (see Figure 4).
How do you Prevent/Minimize Valve Sticking? There are some simple answers to this question… Hot Side: Run your engine hard, at least occasionally, 65-75% ROP or LOP enough to just stay out of the GAMI ‘Red Box’ (www.advancedpilot.com/redbox.html) and Cylinder Head Temperatures (CHTs) below 400°F. These will maximize combustion temperatures and minimize lead deposit build-up on your exhaust valve stems. The ideal range for CHTs is from 325°F-380°F. A lower CHT is fine if you are at a higher power setting.
As a result, the amount of combustion chamber leakage “blow-by” into the crankcase oil is very large compared to small, tight, water-cooled car engines. Blow-by in aircraft engines is the root cause of deposit formation. And deposit formation can cause (cool side) stuck valves as well as stuck rings and sludge problems. Figure 1 shows a cutaway of a Lycoming cylinder. Note the large clearance between the piston, on the left, and the cylinder, on the right, at room temperature. This clearance decreases as the engine heats up, however, it is always much greater than that found in a water-cooled engine. And greater clearance means greater amounts of blow-by contamination.

Varnish films formed on the hottest parts such as the pistons or valve guides eventually degrade to hard black carbon deposits (see Figure 3).
Cool Side: Change your oil frequently enough to prevent varnish build-up. For most aircraft, this is from 25 hours to 35 hours (or every 3-4 months). If you fly a lot, you can stretch it. If you have a big motor (L-540 or C-550) with a 6-8 quart sump, don’t stretch it. The ideal oil temperature range is from 180°F-220°F.
Lines of Defense… How well do aircraft oils deal with this filth? Apparently, not well as we still find copious amounts of deposits in our engines when we service or rebuild them. The first line of defense in the cleanliness war is the Ashless Dispersant (AD). It is considered a ‘keep clean’ additive as it does not clean up existing deposits. ADs work because they are attracted to the VPs and several AD molecules surround each VP molecule as it enters the oil. The AD molecules, encapsulate and suspend the VP molecules, preventing their polymerization into varnish films. The ‘encapsulated’ VPs exit the engine when the oil is dumped at oil change time. It is a common belief that the dispersant holds the lead bromide particles in suspension, but this is incorrect. The only things the dispersants bind to are VPs.

Blow-by consists of raw fuel, partially-combusted (reactive) Fuel, known as ‘Varnish Precursors’ (VPs), steam (water), lead bromide particles and a lot of heat. Most engines introduce one to several ounces of blow-by into the oil every hour of operation. The vast majority of blow-by goes out the crankcase vent (breather), however small amounts of VPs and water remain in the oil to cause us all kinds of grief. Virtually all the deposits in the oil-wetted areas of the engine are caused by these blow-by VPs. Everyone is familiar with VPs. They are what you get when you buy a can of varnish. When applied from the can to a wood or metal surface, VPs react with each other in a process called polymerization, leaving the familiar ‘varnish’ film. VPs act the same way in an engine and looking inside most used engines, you can observe the formation of clear “varnish” films over most of the internal parts. These films darken with heat exposure becoming amber in color (see Figure 2).
Ashless Dispersant makes up 3% of the oil. So there is a limited number of dispersant molecules to keep the engine clean. The base stock, which makes up 90-95% of the oil, helps the dispersant by holding some VPs in solution. When both the dispersant is consumed and the basestock is saturated with VPs, deposit films quickly start forming. During the ‘break-in’ period (the first 10-50 hours from overhaul), most manufacturers and engine builders recommend using a non-dispersant oil, commonly referred to as ‘mineral oil’. Some think the dispersant interferes with the break-in process (it doesn’t) and others want a thin film of varnish to form over the internal parts of the engine for rust protection. Lycoming turbocharged engine owners must use AD oil for the life of the engine from break-in to TBO. This is because the manufacturer realized that any early deposits lead to future problems. Following break-in, everyone is instructed to use AD oil. Another problem caused by varnish formation is sludge formation. Sticky varnish films capture lead bromide particles. (Recall that burning leaded fuel with ethylene dibromide lead scavenger forming lead bromide particles that end up in the oil). The lead bromide particles aren’t a problem until they are captured in a varnish deposit, making it substantially thicker. A little varnish, acting as glue, combines with countless lead bromide particles to form a dense heavy sludge. We see examples of this sludge problem throughout the engine as it settles in the low flow areas like the sump, constant-speed prop hub, and inside the crankshaft. Lead sludge has the consistency of room temperature butter.

You should also lean very aggressively when on the ground, as it reduces the amount of fuel entering the oil. Lean until the engine barely runs smoothly. This will keep your oil and engine cleaner and you will not be able to run to full power risking a take-off with a leaned mixture. I will mention that the oil additive, Camguard, contains unique deposit control additives. These additives work in conjunction with the ashless dispersant to keep engines deposit and sludge free and it is the only product to offer this technology. You and your mechanic should expand the use of a borescope to include looking for hot side valve deposit buildup as well as signs of cool side crankcase varnish deposits. Keeping an eye on these deposit buildups, and modifying operation accordingly is the best way of avoiding some costly problems.

Two unique doors for pilot Gene Buboltz, of Cold Spring, Minnesotta, was looking for two unique hydraulic applications for his lake home and turned to Schweiss Doors for a solution. One door is disguised as a wall, allowing him to drive his ATV into the lower level, where he also stores his jet skis. The room also serves as a recreation room and a place to store his flying memorabilia. The hydraulic door measures 4ft 6in wide by 6ft 7in tall. “The current global economic situation is causing fleet managers to evaluate new helicopter purchases closely, and that's why we're seeing a more cautious five-year demand projection compared with previous years,” said Ben Driggs, president, Americas, Honeywell Aerospace. The survey showed new purchase-plan rates were lower for the next five years across all regions. When considering a new purchase, operators’ results mirrored those from last year, with make and model choices most strongly influenced by range, cabin size, performance, technology upgrades and brand experience. Helicopter fleet utilization in the last year generally increased compared with 2015. Over the next year, usage rates are expected to improve significantly in North America and Latin America. Honeywell’s survey queried more than 1,000 chief pilots and flight department managers of companies operating 3,746 turbine and 362 piston helicopters worldwide. SIKORSKY S-76D VIP HELICOPTER RECEIVES EXPANDED EASA CERTIFICATION The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has completed a second phase of validations for new capabilities and expanded performance of the Sikorsky S-76D helicopter. The announcement was made at the Farnborough International Air Show and Sikorsky expects to make its first delivery to a European VIP customer by the end of this year.

UK Midlands-based utility and survey specialist Helicentre Aviation is modernizing its helicopter fleet for the National Grid gas contract, the UK’s largest onshore pipeline surveillance contract. Russian/Serbian Heli Maintenance Centre? Russia’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Gleb Nikitin, met with Serbia’s Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic and Goran Knezevic, Economy Minister to discuss a prospective maintenance centre for helicopters between the two countries. The Mysteries And Myths of the Modern Rotorcraft… Cutting through the myths of helicopter operations, Dave Higdon discusses some of the questions operators should tackle when considering a rotorcraft for the flight department… Myth 1: Helicopters are More Dangerous Overall, according to the safety statistics of various institutions, the risks of traveling by helicopter run at about the same level as flying fixed-wing. Just like in fixed-wing aircraft, most helicopter accidents stem from operator error as opposed to mechanical failure. Now modern technology offers an increasing array of tools to help avoid common pilot-error accidents like CFIT, wire strikes and weather encounters, however. Myth 2: Helicopter Flying is more Difficult One popular line compares flying a helicopter to trying to balance one-legged atop a beach ball while simultaneously rubbing your stomach. Yet aviators experienced in both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft stress that flying a helicopter is really no more difficult than flying an airplane, though it’s obviously different. Practice is the key component of success in both types. And many a person became a pilot starting out in helicopters.

Myth 3: Helicopters are Exorbitantly Expensive Admittedly, the per-seat costs of turbine helicopters can run higher than comparable aircraft. But the comparisons are relative. Fuel expenses tend to run higher per flight hour on a horsepower-to-horsepower basis because helicopters are not as aerodynamically efficient as airplanes. Maintenance costs can be higher simply because of the complexity of the powerplant, rotor and control systems and because inspection intervals typically are more frequent. But in mission-focused terms, helicopters offer capabilities unavailable from fixed-wing aircraft – and that should be the only basis for comparison. Myth 4: You Can Land Helicopters Anywhere... Airspace and local zoning ordinances have a say in where airports are built, helipads constructed, and where one can legally land a helicopter. More than one property owner learned the hard way that owning a large plot with room to land a helicopter didn’t make actually doing so OK with their local authorities – or their neighbours. That said, the flexibility of helicopters make them ideal for off-airport missions. They’re also very good for travel from legally-established heliports and helipads to airports or other legal landing sites. All they need is sufficient space to handle the vehicle’s approach and departure profile and to prevent rotor strikes. Myth 5: Helicopters are all the Same One size, one version, absolutely does not fit all. The first step in selecting a helicopter involves identifying how the machine will be used. What's its primary mission the majority of the time? If your envisioned use mainly involves cross-country flights of more than 350 miles, a helicopter may not be your best option – unless, that is, the destination frequently requires landing in a remote location. For making short hops between heliports 100-200 miles away, a helicopter may be the suitable option. Do you need to carry a lot of people or equipment to remote locales? There are helicopters suitable for that, just like there are fixed-wing aircraft capable of using short, unimproved strips. Speed wise, they may be closely matched. Perhaps you need to pick up from an urban heliport and fly to a nearby airport. The helicopter beats all alternatives for this scenario, particularly when there is dense traffic between an office building and the airport. Depending on the territory to be travelled, a multi-engine helicopter may be the smart option; particularly for missions over unimproved landscape. Of course, cabins finished for executive transport are an option in almost any size of helicopter – but larger, multi-engine helicopters are better suited to heavy executive transport. Beyond mission considerations, however, it becomes a matter of budget. Once you’ve worked through the myths and concerns about helicopter ownership, for operators with the need for what helicopters do best, then it's a matter of picking the best helicopter to meet those needs.

VVIP Helicopters: The factors contributing to the latest VVIP market trends Hot on the heels of HAI Heli-Expo, Terry Spruce poses questions to helicopter industry experts about the current market for VVIP helicopters…
Terry Spruce began as a freelance aviation journalist in 2005, after working for a well known aviation consultancy group as the editor of their weekly publication. He has written on many business aviation themes over the years.
Offering their views and observations on the market trends for VVIP helicopters were Charlotte Pedersen, CEO of Luxaviation Helicopters; Simon Mitchell, Accountable Manager of Starspeed; and Jakub Hoda, Managing Director, Europe & Russia of Bell Helicopter.
Is the VVIP helicopter market showing signs of an upturn? If so, why is that? CP: I have not seen any signs of this market being in a downturn… All the market research we have performed as well as the feedback we have had from our business jet companies and clients who also own or regularly charter helicopters have shown a steadily rising tendency, especially in the VVIP market. This also goes hand-in-hand with the forecasts for the sector from the OEMs, which indicate expectations for delivery of new helicopters have shifted upwards in the corporate and VIP markets. SM: The VVIP market (as in VVIP, rather than the VIP) never really showed much of a dip. This very high-end of the market was surprisingly resilient to the ‘financial crash’. It showed a dip in the immediate aftermath, but since 2011 it has actually been fairly steady and shows signs of growth. Some of the growth has been directly associated with the number of $100m+ Mega Yachts being built and launched. We do see and hear about a number of new VVIP clients – but the market has never been huge, and it is unlikely to ever be on the scale of offshore or EMS. Nevertheless it is still a very valuable sector and shows a lot more resilience than others. JH: We live in a fast-paced world where immediacy is only getting more important. Our owners/operators want to know they can efficiently get to and from their required destinations, but also know it will be done safely and in a comfortable environment.
Which models are VVIP owners/operators looking at? CP: The six to nine-seat or Five-Ton types are clearly the most popular. They offer spacious cabins and can still fit comfortably on the helipads of yachts. The fact that they are multiengine aircraft is a given. SM: In our observation, VVIP owners are generally going to buy the biggest aircraft they can either afford, or fit aboard their yacht and/or other places they want to go (such as Monaco). As a result, the trend is that the majority of the sector is populated by the eightseat/Five-Ton types. It is also a general truth that most of the purchase decision is driven by the cabin. This is why the S-76 is still used as a benchmark of comparison. Owners do not like ‘locking knees’, and they also prefer a decent amount of headroom.

Are They on the Rise? Other factors do play a part in the purchase decision, of course, but it can be surprising quite how much the seating and cabin environment dominate.
Is the recovery of the VVIP helicopter market happening worldwide, or is it just in Europe? CP: Again, I have not seen any downturn in this market, but the usage of VVIP helicopters is clearly becoming more and more popular, due to security and safety reasons. (CAT VVIP helicopters have probably the very best safety records of all types of aviation/transport and they can ensure a high level of security for their passengers.) Another reason is the increase of HNWIs worldwide where more individuals can afford this kind of transportation. With the new generation helicopters, maintenance costs are pretty reasonable, and by joining a commercial operator, owners often find they can benefit from preferential fuel, insurance and maintenance costs as well as reduce the over-all cost of operating by chartering the helicopter out with the operator. The advantages of owning a helicopter have become very attractive for both individuals and corporations. SM: That is a challenge to answer. I believe the main impediment to growth in other areas is due to unfavourable regulation; regulation that does not permit owners to fully-utilise the flexibility and capability that their helicopters offer. JH: We’re seeing VVIP helicopter transport interest from around the world. In Europe, we’ve seen a keen interest specifically in the Bell 429 model for VVIP transport.
In Summary… Whilst the oil and gas sector of helicopter operations is flat at this time, other areas of operations are growing fast – and the VVIP niche is one such area, according to those involved in that industry. The market may be small compared with the oil and gas segments, but it is growing. And that can only be good for the helicopter manufacturers.

Avanti EVO Special Mission Modification Piaggio Aerospace, a leading Italian aircraft manufacturer active in the business and defence & security sectors, announced it will provide its Avanti EVO aircraft in MedEvac and other special missions configuration with an enlarged cabin door as an option. The announcement was made at AVALON 2017, the Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition staged at Avalon Airport in the city of Geelong, Victoria, Australia, between February 28th and March 5th, 2017. The five-inch-enlarged cabin door, in combination with its already low ground clearance, will allow an easier and more direct stretcher-loading in the aircraft, thus enhancing the overall aircraft capability in ambulance operations. Renato Vaghi, Chief Executive Officer of Piaggio Aerospace, said: “The enlarged door option, specifically designed for special missions, highlights Piaggio Aerospace’s willingness to be a key player in this sector. In particular, Avanti EVO characteristics – overall performance, pressurization and roomy cabin, and now an enlarged door – make it the perfect platform for fulfilling medical operators’ needs”. The Avanti EVO is the third generation of the legendary P.180. Currently, there are more than 220 P.180 Avanti aircraft in operation globally: Six Avanti EVO, 126 of the secondgeneration Avanti II, and 89 of the original Avanti. Milestone Aviation Group will provide two AW139 helicopters from its order book with Leonardo Helicopters to Norsk Luftambulanse AS (NLA) to support EMS in Norway. Last July Norway’s National Air Ambulance Service awarded NLA a six-year contract to operate all twelve HEMS bases in Norway.
