Interview with Mikael Rosén, Ramp Manager at Grafair Jet Center FBO. Grafair Jet Center FBO has been voted the N°1 FBO in the EBAN Survey. What distinguishes you from other FBO’s? Two main things: Firstly, we have our own terminal building, ramp and ground servicing equipment, and the ability to provide all necessary servicing in house. This gives us the possibility to assist all our customers within a few minutes after receiving the request. Secondly, we have well educated and highly trained staff with the intention to provide absolute top-quality service. For example, all our line service personnel have the same technical background as an airplane mechanic which is a great advantage when servicing our customers out on the ramp. Besides that, all personnel involved in the handling operation always strive to go one step further and will be happy to help.

When choosing a supplier of chemicals it’s important to know that the products are as safe as they can be. I prefer to work with trusted chemicals, not harming me or our personnel. In today’s strive for a better environment we need to trust the chemicals have been produced in a safe way and that the nature won’t take too much damage in case of an eventual pollution. Grafair has a strong link with the USA (Founder Mr Bengt Grafström lived in the USA to manage Swedens largest aviation school for aspiring pilots). Despite this, you choose to work with European suppliers. Is that an informed choice? The link to the USA is still strong since we buy a lot of spare parts, aircraft tow trucks, service equipment and so on from the land of aviation. But the choice to work with European suppliers of de-icing fluids, cleaning detergents, other chemicals and so on is conscious. A local supplier knows the local regulations. Besides that, the lead times when ordering products will be shortened when the distributor is located not too far away. How would you describe the service Aero-Sense is giving you? We are honored to be working with Aero-Sense. They have a great local knowledge, and a very good range of products. We are using the Aero-Sense products for in-flight de-icing (TKS) and also the ICE-5 anti-icing additive for the turbine fuel. When performing aircraft interior and exterior cleaning, we are currently almost solely using Aero-Sense products. What we are hoping to see from Aero-Sense in the future are even more cleaning products for the interiors like an Ink and Stain Remover for leathers and a general leather cleaner/ conditioner. Aero-Sense has ambitious future plans Aero-Sense will be expanding in many ways during the coming months!

We are adding a completely new line of commercial aircraft interior cleaning and caring products to the product catalogue. The aircraft industry has been facing several outbreaks of communicable diseases in the recent years. Now more than ever, the importance of aircraft cleaning and hygiene control is emphasized! Also we are revising labeling and will be presenting a new, even more professional, line of product labels. The aim is to create a label 100% conform EU-regulations (unlike many imported chemicals from the United States), adapted to the REACH regulation. Air BP strengthens French presence - Additional site at Biarritz Airport Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and service supplier has strengthened its French network with the addition of a new location at Biarritz Airport (BIQ). The new location, which has been operational from October 1st, represents further expansion for Air BP in France following the addition of Pau Pyrenees in July and Cannes Mandelieu in February. Garmin have celebrated the maiden flight of the Beechjet 400A featuring the G5000 Integrated Flight Deck. This marks a significant step towards completion of the G5000 upgrade for the popular Beechjet 400A and Hawker 400XP. The G5000 modernizes the cockpit, increases aircraft utility, provides additional weight savings, exceeds NextGen requirements and solves parts obsolescence, giving operators superior avionics capability and increasing value of their aircraft.

The world’s last surviving Dornier Do 17 has now moved into the second phase of its conservation at the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford. It’s been a little over 15 months since the aircraft was lifted from the bottom of the Dover Straits and transported to the Museum’s Cosford site for ground breaking conservation work. This process has helped to remove marine accretions and subsequently the neutralised corrosion impurities in the aluminium aircraft structure. The project is progressing at a much faster rate than previously anticipated and the Museum is delighted to see second stage conservation work commence on the aircraft’s forward fuselage. Confident that the citric acid solution has done its job, the fuselage was removed from the tunnels early September and has undergone an intense wash down, before being moved into the Conservation Centre. Aircraft Technician Andy Woods is now working on the Dornier full time, with his initial efforts focused on internal cleaning and removing any remaining marine deposits with the use of plastic scrapers. Control rods and other smaller items are being carefully removed allowing Technicians greater access to the airframe structure beneath. A team of Volunteers will work on the components removed from the aircraft and which will be put back at a later date. The construction of the wings has made the process of removing salt and sand from internal sections much slower than the fuselage. The wing section has recently been subject to a deep clean by a team of Apprentices and over a tonne of salt and sand has been removed from the aircraft. Further time in the hydration tunnels is required to allow the citric acid to do its work before the wings join the fuselage in the Conservation Centre. Both engines and propellers have been removed from the tunnels and mounted on purpose built stands allowing easier access for Technicians to begin treatment. During the aircrafts time underwater the magnesium components disintegrated but the steel components remained fully intact. The majority of the marine deposits have now been removed and a test section has been coated in a 2-pac polly acrylic mix. The TKS system for the Beechcraft G36 FIKI weighs 54 pounds (24.49 kilograms) without fluid and 119 pounds (53.97 kilograms) with a full tank of fluid. A full tank of ice protection fluid at 7 gallons (26.49 litres) provides up to 2.5 hours of operation. Minimum upkeep is required. As the TKS system is used, it flushes out any accumulation of debris on the panels. Glycol has cleaning properties and will not harm the paint finish of the aircraft. There is also no performance loss; only significant ice protection capabilities are added.

CAV Ice Protection announced it has achieved Supplemental Type Certification (STC) approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification to install aftermarket TKS systems for the Beechcraft G36 – allowing flight into known icing (FIKI). Cessna received type certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for the Cessna Citation CJ3+. The approval came less than six months after the company introduced the new model (in March).

The EASA A350-900 Type Certificate was signed by EASA’s Executive Director, Patrick Ky. The document was handed over to Airbus’ Executive Vice President Engineering, Charles Champion and Airbus’ A350 XWB Chief Engineer, Gordon McConnell.

The Citation CJ3+, with seating for up to nine people, is certified for single pilot operation, featuring a number of new systems designed to reduce pilot workload.

UK - Wales Air Ambulance gets Government commitment for doctors on all flights A new clinical emergency service to stabilise and transfer the most critically-ill and injured patients to hospital by road and air, ensuring they receive the best life-saving care, will be UK Welsh Air Ambulance operational in Wales EC135. from April 2015, Deputy Minister for Health Vaughan Gething announced The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service Cymru (EMRTS Cymru) is the first national service of its kind in the UK and has been developed using the latest evidence from military and civilian experience. The service is designed to bring teams of doctors to an injured patient, giving them access to life-saving treatment at the scene of their injury or accident.It is estimated EMRTS Cymru could contribute to at least a 40% improvement in survival rates from major trauma in Wales and could reduce transfer times to specialist hospital care by more than 40%.  More information visit www.walesairambulance.com

Future of Helicopter Safety Outlined at Oil & Gas UK Breakfast Briefing The continuing steps being taken to improve further the safety of offshore helicopter flights were outlined to the oil and gas sector on Thursday October 2. Seven months after the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published its ‘CAP1145’ report containing a series of actions and recommendations for helicopter safety, Oil & Gas UK is hosting a helicopter safety breakfast briefing at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. Mark Swan, group director, safety and airspace regulation, CAA will give a talk about the report at the Safety in the North Sea - What is the future for our Helicopters? event sponsored by Petrotechnics.

UK - LIGHTHOUSE SUPPORT

PDG Helicopters wins combined British/Irish lighthouse support contract The General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of the UK and Ireland have announced a £13M sevenyear contract to PDG Helicopters for the provision of helicopter services to cover all three Authorities. The provision of one helicopter supplier across the GLAs will deliver significant cost savings of around £7.9M to the General Lighthouse Fund, which pays for the safety critical work of the GLAs to provide a reliable, efficient and cost-effective Maritime Aids to Navigation service around the coast of UK and Ireland. Until now each Authority has contracted its own helicopter service provider and co-ordinated its own activities. The decision to award a single tri-GLA contract for helicopter services is a first for the participating Authorities, who established a cross-GLA project team to manage the procurement process. Helicopters have been contracted by the GLAs since the 1970’s for the transportation of personnel to remote and difficult-to-access sites and for specialised operations to transport materials to and from their support vessels and lighthouses.  More information visit - www.pdghelicopters.com

INAER Aviation Italia, a leading provider of offshore transportation, medical emergency and resuce services and fire-fighting, has recently been awarded a contract for the provision of off-shore transportation and medevac services by ENI Cyprus. The two helicopters will transport passengers engaged in the exploration project in Cyprus onto the vessel ‘Saipem 10.000’ which is equipped with a helipad of 27 meters diameter and a capability of 22 tons. The new service, which started last month, will also include the provision of ground services in cooperation with Skylink Services and a complete new hangar dedicated to the maintenance of the AW 139 local fleet. “The delivery of the Mi-8AMT Mi-8AMT. to the Almaty City Rescue Service represents another important step in the continued development of Russia-Kazakhstan cooperation in the operation of Russian helicopter technology,” Russian Helicopters’ Deputy CEO for Sales and Marketing Grigory Kozlov said. “Today about 200 helicopters built at our facilities are operated by private companies and state agencies in Kazakhstan. The civilian helicopter fleet here is growing rapidly, and we are committed to meeting in full our Kazakh partners’ requirements for the latest helicopters.” “The city of Almaty boasts a population of 1.5 million, and is the rapidly growing southern capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

We pay significant attention to issues related to equipping the Rescue Service with the latest technology, specialist technology and equipment,” said Almaty’s Akim (head of a local government) Akhmetzhan Esimov. “We hope that the Mi-8AMT will successfully carry out operations to prevent emergencies, emergency response operations, and to offer first aid to residents of and visitors to the capital. SAFETY CLOTHING RULES Skirts and dresses banned from offshore helicopter flights Women travelling to and from offshore oil and gas installations are now banned from wearing skirts and dresses as part of new safety measures. Passengers will also have to wear three layers of clothing under their survival suits in winter, and two in summer. The standardised clothing policy is designed to improve the chance of survival for workers if helicopters have to ditch into the sea.
