How often do you change your engine oil? Let’s answer this as it applies to the oils and engines in our two favorite toys, cars and airplanes. You might be interested to know that the auto manufacturers, as a group, define the quality of the oil required for their cars. They set all the performance standards for automotive oils. These include wear protection, piston deposits, rust protection, oxidation, fuel economy, sludge control, low temperature viscosity, oil consumption and catalyst protection. You might be surprised to learn that the aircraft engine manufacturers have no input into the quality of the oils used in their engines. They simply approve the use of any FAA certified oil. And that certification standard is merely one of “Do No Harm”. The current SAE spec, J1899, is still based on a WWII Navy Specification, MIL-L-22851. Not exactly a modern high performance standard!

The Big Difference Car engines are very different from aircraft engines. Car engines are water-cooled (radiators) and aircraft engines are air-cooled. This difference is crucial. The reason is that air-cooled aircraft engines have large designed clearances between the pistons and the cylinder walls to prevent piston scuffing as the cold engine warms to operating temperature. Figure 1.

How often do you change the oil in your car? 3000 miles? 5000 miles? 10,000 miles? Do you know why? If you said 3000 miles, is it because you’ve that’s what you’ve always done? And oil is cheap insurance. If you said 10,000 miles, is it because that’s what the manufacturer says? If you said 5000 miles, is it because you feel it’s a good compromise?

Varnish precursors react further to forms acids that collaborate with the abundant amounts of water present, to promote rust (pitting). see Figure 4.

The auto manufacturers determine their oil change intervals based on a combination of three problems: One, the oil wears out (actually the additives get consumed.) Two, it does not hold its viscosity grade thru oxidation or polymer breakdown. Three, it gets contaminated with fuel and water. If the manufacturer sets the oil change interval at 10,000 miles for average use, they know that none of these problems will occur until well after this mileage.

How about your airplane?

First problem – Deposits

How often do you change the oil? 25 hour? 35 hours? 50 hours? Once a year, at annual? If you said 25 hours, is it because that’s what your friends of the forums do? If you said 50, is it because it’s what the manufacturer or mechanic recommends? If you said 35 hours, is it because you feel it’s a good compromise? The aircraft engine manufacturers currently specify an oil change interval of 50 hours or 4 months with a full flow oil filter or 25 hours or 4 months with an oil screen. Current filter technology offers nothing to warrant the doubling of the oil change interval. Filters do not remove water, acids or the important 10 micron abrasive particles. There is no published information from either engine manufacturer that explains or justify this extension.

Water-cooled car engines do not require large clearances between the pistons and the cylinder walls because the of tight temperature control attainable because of water cooling. This difference in cylinder/piston clearance is responsible for the dramatic increase in blow-by contamination of the aircraft oil. Blow-by is the small amount of combustion gas that squirts by the piston rings during every high pressure combustion event. Blow-by consists of unburned fuel, partially burned (and chemically reactive) fuel, water, and copious amounts of heat. And, when using leaded fuel, tiny lead bromide particles.

Oil companies add Ashless Dispersant (AD) to the oil to react with the varnish precursors holding them in suspension until the oil is changed. Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of dispersant and it may be consumed in as little as 20 hours, depending on the engine. To keep an engine clean it would require changing the oil prior to the consumption of the dispersant. But how do you determine when this is? Or is there another option. CamGuard works with the ashless dispersant by neutralizing the reactive precursors preventing varnish formation.

Second Problem – Rust The low utilization of aircraft leading to rust on critical engine components is the major reason for premature and unscheduled maintenance. Deposit control additives, prevent stuck rings and valves Some oils have a very small amount of rust inhibitor, but there is little agreement on what level of protection is required. It is this blow-by contamination that limits the useful life of aircraft oil.

Time, heat and chemical attack cause seals in the engine to harden and weep oil. CamGuard contains additives to recondition seals and stop leaks.

The bad actor in the blow-by is the partially burned and chemically reactive fuel known in the oil formulation business as varnish precursors. It is these varnish precursors that causes virtually all the problems we see in general aviation engines. It forms allthe varnish and carbon deposits that plate out on the hot surfaces of the engine. see Figure 2.

CamGuard is the first real alternative to marginal commercial oils. It demonstrates new standards for levels of cleanliness, rust protection and wear reduction.

Another feature Strange insisted on was to have the door inset about two feet, instead of installing it on the face of the building. “I wanted to do something totally different,� Strange says. “I kind of wanted to go beyond the typical look of an airport hangar door. I like the autolatches and remote opener. The batt-insulated door operates very quietly and is dressed up with a cedar interior trim to match the garage door.� The inside of the hangar is painted in a patriotic red, white and blue with a large American flag on the back wall. Strange says he appreciates the sacrifices veterans have made, including his father, a Vietnam veteran.

J.T. Strange of Goshen, Ohio, is in the process of building a new home at the Obannon Creek Aerodrome Airpark. His hangar, which will hold his Cessna 182T business and pleasure aircraft, is fitted with a Schweiss 45-foot by 15-foot, 11-inch bifold liftstrap door.

Strange says the neighbor was introduced to Schweiss Doors at the Oshkosh (Wis.) Air Show where he talked to company owner Mike Schweiss. “I researched a lot of other hangar door companies, but along the lines of making the personal contact (with my neighbor) I was pretty much sold on Schweiss and went that way,� says Strange. “It wasn’t even a matter of cost at that point anymore. I went on the reputation that Schweiss has.� Strange’s hangar required a 45-foot by 15-foot, 11-inch door to house his Cessna 182T, which he uses for business and pleasure. Bob Beckman of R.D. Beck Services of Harrison, Ohio, a Schweiss Doors installer since 1999, was able to fill the request. Strange wanted a Schweiss bifold liftstrap/autolatch remote opening door, with black horizontal corrugated sheeting on the face of the door. “By mounting the sheeting horizontally, we were able to have the top corrugated panel of the bifold door overlap the lower panel,� Strange says. “When you look at the closed door, even when you are standing very close to it, the two-inch pattern appears to be seamless with no joint in the middle and looks more like a single panel hydraulic door. It came together perfectly. We couldn’t ask for anything better.� Strange’s research and engineering background led him to select a bifold door over a one-piece hydraulic door because there is less surface area for windy

When people ask Beckman why he installs Schweiss doors, he tells them, he’s got one on his hangar. “I tell them that Schweiss is a phone call away with an outstanding support group that will help with any technical question or problem on the spot,� Beckman says. “I still have the old-style cable door on my hangar and it has never failed me, but since then, Schweiss has improved and added even more features to their doors. I tell customers and potential customers that Schweiss will always stand behind their doors.� Beckman keeps busy with cable to liftstrap conversions. He recently replaced cables with liftstraps and auto-latches at the U.C. Health Air Care & Mobile Care bifold door in Butler County. The concern was that with a door that opens up to 10 times a day, every day, it would break down sooner, so the conversion was an easy choice.

The top corrugated panel of the bifold door overlaps the lower panel, making it appear seamless when closed, like that of a one-piece hydraulic door.

Air BP anticipates that the growing number of aviators who want to reduce their carbon impact will welcome the carbon offsetting function of the app. The feature, managed by BP Target Neutral, BP’s not-for-profit initiative, allows customers to offset the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the fuel purchased. This is done via carbon credits which support low carbon development projects around the world. This app feature will be free-of-charge until the end of 2016. After that, customers can continue to neutralize their carbon footprint by paying to offset. The RocketRoute Fuel App is the first in a collection of trip planning applications that will be added to the RocketRoute platform to simplify aviation operations. With the ability to purchase fuel directly from the supplier, its ease of use and capacity to improve productivity, it has already proved successful with the customer test-base. Norbert Kamp, chief commercial officer, Air BP said: “Fuel is the most basic of necessities for flight, and together with RocketRoute we are making fuel purchasing an easier process. This is the first part of a much broader product offering we are developing with RocketRoute. As we add more services to the platform the whole will become greater than the sum of the parts; our ambition is to create a powerful digital marketplace for the aviation community.� Kurt Lyall, co-founder RocketRoute adds: “We have had our heads down working closely with Air BP over the last twelve months to develop an app that aviators from around the globe will find appealing and love to use. We have learned a lot in the design process about what customers need. We want to build on this to transform the face of online trip planning by creating a transparent, efficient, attractive set of services that are easily accessible at competitive pricing.� This latest news follows Air BP’s announcement in April that it had acquired a stake in RocketRoute. Air BP started working with RocketRoute in 2014 to incorporate information about Air BP’s worldwide fuel network. RocketRoute is a cloud-based solution that works online, via the RocketRoute app and on personal electronic devices. Both Air BP and RocketRoute offer 24-hour support to customers to further bolster the service. Air BP and RocketRoute will be exhibiting at Air Ops Europe in Cannes during October 12-13 and at the upcoming NBAA Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition in Orlando, USA during November 1-3, Stand 1457. Red Bull Air Race World Championship Title for Matthias Dolderer Matthias Dolderer takes his third win of the season and is crowned World Champion. Dolderer flew the perfect run in the Final 4 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to take the race win and also the World Championship title. The German pilot has been consistent all season and when the pressure came on in the Final 4 here in the IMS he didn't crack under the pressure.

Aviation (GA) Road Map is to create an option to provide training for GA-related non-commercial licences outside an Approved Training Organisation (ATO). With Opinion 11/2016, the Agency proposes to introduce a new regulatory framework which requires training organisations for LAPL, PPL, SPL and BPL not to seek prior approval but to simply declare its training activities to the competent authority. This new ‘declared training organisation’ (DTO) also benefits from simplified organisational and oversight requirements, all in all granting extensive alleviations to GA training providers.

Rimowa’s Beautiful Junkers F13 Flies for the First Time

Besides its innovative mono cantilever wings, the F13 also features an open cockpit, which is ostensibly designed to increase the pilot’s awareness of weather conditions which was a big concern in an age before radar and accurate weather predictions. Inside, a heated passenger compartment can hold four passengers with relatively small snug leather seats. Seven years of research, planning and approval - plus undisclosed millions of euros - went into the project, which was created with the help of Swiss pleasure flights company Ju-Air, the Association of Friends of Historical Aircraft, and Rimowa. To recreate the aircraft entirely from scratch, the designers reverse engineered the aircraft using scans of a static museum model in France and with any paperwork they could find.

The Junkers F13.

The Junkers F13, an aircraft that was designed nearly 100 years ago and last flew in the Sixties, has flown again thanks to luxury luggage company Rimowa and its aviation-loving CEO Dieter Morszeck. The world’s first all-metal commercial aircraft, which was a decade ahead of its time when it first flew in 1919, set records for altitude (22,000 feet) and endurance (26 hours with added fuel tanks) and was entirely reconstructed from scratch by the luxury luggage company with a team of engineers led by its CEO and other supporters. The company took on this mission thanks largely led by the passion of Morszeck, who personally flies the company’s Embraer Phenom private jet around the world to meetings and events. His company, which sells some of the most iconic and desirable luggage with distinctive “grooves” previously used the same corrugated metal that made up the Junkers’ fuselage and wings.

The only modifications made were to make the plane compliant with modern day safety requirements - for instance, adding brakes - and with a newer more reliable American Pratt and Whitney rotary engine rated at 450 horsepower, up nearly a third on the original Junkers’ 310 horsepower. First commissioned in 1919 and making its first flight in the same year, the Junkers F13 was manufactured at the company’s plant in Dessau, Germany until 1932. By 1933, the Nazis had taken over the company and Hermann Göring turned it into a tool of German re-armament, taking everything (including the company’s patents) from the socialist pacifist Professor Hugo Junkers who started the company, threatening to send him to prison unless he handed them over. The 2016 King’s Cup Air Race organised by the Royal Aero Club Records Racing and Rally Association was held at Shobdon Aerodrome on Sunday the 4th. September. After qualifying, by racing without disqualification in the Stewards Cup the day before (and completing two other races during the 2016 season) 13 planes ranging from a Lake Buchaneer handicapped at 115.88 kts to an RV8 handicapped at 179.53 kts lined up for the historic race. The winner was Dominic Crossan racing with his navigator Roger Scholes in their RV6 handicapped at 176.08 kts. Last year Roger was

The event was established by King George V as an incentive to the development of light aircraft and engine design. According to WingX, there were 74,689 Business Aviation departures in Europe in August 2016, a -0.9% year-over-year (YOY) decline in activity. Notably, business jet activity fell by -2% (versus the same period last year), largely due to declines in flight activity in Germany, Switzerland and Turkey. At last month’s Business Aviation Forum in Moscow, Alexander Kuleshov, chairman of the Russian United Business Aviation Association (RUBAA), revealed they’ve been collecting traffic data on Russian Business Aviation activity since 2014. Figures prepared by the RUBAA for June normally the busiest month for Russian bizav show that business jet movements have steadily declined over the past three years, as represented by Table below. Flights performed by business jets in the region’s busiest destinations, which generate more than 80 percent of traffic (including Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Samara, Nizhy Novgorod, Rostov and Sochi) have trended down. The number of business jet flights have dropped as have the number of passengers carried on these flights.

Business Aircraft: They’re Not Just for Mahogany Row

Yves Roch, Chief Executive of Lausanne-based Fly 7 Executive Aviation, is putting his Pilatus PC-12 to good use providing quick, efficient links throughout Europe – and not only for those who you’d think can afford it. Rani Singh discovers more… oasting a fleet of 13 business aircraft, ten of Fly 7’s aircraft are in fact Pilatus PC-12s. These single-engine turboprops are based in various locations, including Cannes, France; Liege, Belgium; and Lausanne and Geneva, Switzerland. An additional exclusive agreement with Helsinki-based Hendell Aviation gives Fly 7 access to what was the first commercialy operated PC-12 in Europe. According to Mr. Roch, many of his European clientelle have businesses in remote locations. “Flying privately in a PC-12 increases the number of feasible airports in Europe to 2,000 destinations, because we can land on small runways. “We find that our corporate clients appreciate the discretion that smaller airports can offer. Moreover, reduced security controls means less time spent waiting, thus they enjoy a considerable gain of time; more time to be productive in their business activities. It is easy to understand why this is an attractive travel alternative for local business men, such as bankers, who wish to retain a low-profie.” So why is the PC-12 such an instrumental aircraft to Fly 7’s operations? “Being based in Lausanne we offer our clients a very good alternative to flying from Geneva,” Roch explains. “With the PC-12 - the largest aircraft that can land at Lausanne - we can compete with Light jets whilst also accessing other small, local runaways such as Saanen Airport that would otherwise not be accessible to our passengers. “Our customers are flying a lot from St. Tropez or Courchevel and the PC-12 enables us to respond to the needs of our market segment perfectly. Our entrepreneurs can get closer to their preferred destinations, allowing them to make a day trip to visit clients, partners or factories in less time than it would take in a commercial airline, or even a larger private jet.”

Schedules Running Like Clockwork…

There are many puns to be made about a Swiss charter company helping its clients’ business schedules tick like clockwork – but on a serious note, Roch does offer the example of how the local watchmakers benefit greatly from the use of the PC-12. “The famous Swiss watchmakers are mostly based in a region called La Chaux-deFonds, a small town that is a fair distance from the main hubs of Geneva, Basel or Zurich,” Roch explains. “La Chaux-de-Fonds has a good, but small airport. There’s only one aircraft that can fly commercially out of this airport – namely our PC-12. So we are flying a lot from La Chaux-de-Fonds to Paris, or other destinations to enable the watchmakers to get their business done further afield in a single day. We are also able to bring clients directly to the factory doorsteps.” Roch feels that the PC-12 is essentially a niche market. “It’s marketed as an aircraft with a big cabin and an interior capacity that no other small business aircraft can provide. Fly 7 is one of only a few players in the market utilizing a PC-12 for charter.”

Business Aviation for All

Yves is well aware that Business Aviation has an unjustified reputation for being a luxury market, but he is keen to point out a new venutre, Fly Me Home, in which the less prosperous are able to benefit from the services of the company’s PC-12s. “We also conduct medical flights for a local hospital,” he explains. “We reduce ambulance costs by coming much closer to the hospital. The flights are partially funded by the hospital, but are mainly funded by our generous donors. “We are also having flight hours donated by the owners of the aircraft in our fleet, to bring terminally ill patients back to their families and loved ones. Full medical assistance is not always necessary to do that kind of flight – but thanks to Fly Me Home we can offer those patients the opportunity to spend their last moments in the place they love, with the people they love.”

September 2016 marked the 60th anniversary of the first export supplies of Kazan Helicopters. The first export was the delivery of a Mi-4 helicopter to Austria, to take people to local ski resorts. In the early 1990s, hopes for large state orders were low. The management of Kazan Helicopters decided to create its own marketing service. To do that, the export and technical department was restructured and direct contacts with buyers and operators were established within a short time. First, it was necessary to save and develop the ties established over the previous decades. After the reconstruction, the plant faced a shortage of a steady demand for its products.

Russian Helicopters is conducting additional certification tests of the Mi-38-2 helicopter to enhance its operational characteristics for further supplies to the Russian Aerospace Forces. Technical features of the helicopter have already been approved by the Ministry of Defense and by the company’s specialists, and all work on further equipping the helicopter will be completed by 2018. Russian Helicopters will create a wide range of modifications of the Mi-38-2 for various departments of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which include a jamming mode, a medevac version, search-and-rescue and assault transport helicopters. ■ More information visit – www.russianhelicopters.aero

The marketing department of Kazan Helicopters had the task to acquire orders for the plant; in order to do so, the company started to actively promote itself at international airshows in France, Dubai, Taiwan, India and Great Britain. It helped to establish direct ties and to start concluding contracts, which could not be seized by foreign trade organizations. The first export contract after the fall of the USSR was signed by VO Aviaexport to supply three helicopters to Sri Lanka. Along with looking for clients and active promotion of the Mi-17-1V helicopter, the marketing department expanded its business ties with companies producing various additional equipment not available in Russia. New ideas for potential customers were introduced into the next modification of the legendary “Eight”. Due to the changes in the helicopter design adopted in the mid-1990s, the Mi-8MTV-5 helicopter (the export modification of Mi-17V-5) entered into military service in Russia. Since 1998, the marketing service has been conducting regular conferences for operators. Specialists from different countries and operator companies began to join the workforce at the plant. Global aerospace and security company Lockheed Martin has signed a wide ranging Letter of Intent (LoI) with Poland’s state owned defence company Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ). This could lead to Poland’s involvement in some of the world’s most innovative defence and security programmes. The agreement was signed in early September at the International Defence Industry Exhibition (MSPO) in Kielce by Jonathan Hoyle, Lockheed Martin Vice President Europe and Latin America and Arkadiusz Siwko, President, PGZ. It paves the way for PGZ member companies to be directly involved in the manufacture of satellite systems, aircraft, helicopters, weapons and combat systems, training devices and simulators. Both Polish domestic and export customers are set to benefit from the agreement. The LoI builds on an agreement inked by PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin company, and PGZ at the Farnborough International Air Show, in late July. Russian Helicopters, has created a prototype of the new rotorcraft at Kazan Helicopters as part of the Police Helicopter program. The machine features extra equipment and is designed to meet the needs of the Russian law enforcement agencies. The police version of Ansat is equipped with platforms for transporting special forces in groups of 4 to 6 people, as well as with a farm for landing with downhill devices, which can be reset in case of emergency. This equipment can be easily removed and if necessary the helicopter can be converted from the police into a medevac unit. Also, the helicopter has the optoelectronic SON-730 system, which provides non-stop viewing, detection and identification of subjects and objects, as well as stabilized TV and IR images and their transfer to the on-board avionics. The system allows to measure distance to the target, its grip and auto tracking, as well as to transmit data in real time to a ground command center display with a range of up to 5 km. ■ More information visit –

HeliAir Sweden has recently procured a second EC120B helicopter. The EC120B will be used to help with power line inspections, fire-fighting and collapsing trees.. HeliAir Sweden are also going to sell their three MD500s, and demonstration flights were made last week to initial interested parties. Their fleet currently holds three Squirrel AS350s (two B2s and one B3) which have been installed with floats, two EC120s, a Huey and the three MD500s. The new EC120B is favourable as it has better visibility, larger cabin and luggage area, reduced noise levels and better hydraulics. Industry leader Airbus Helicopters Inc. exhibited some of the most efficient helicopters for air medical transport solutions at the Air Medical Transport Conference, Monday, Sept. 26 through Wednesday, Sept. 28 at the Charlotte Convention Center, Charlotte, N.C. On display for close-up inspection by air medical transport operators were an H135-series aircraft operated by STAT MedEvac, a western Pennsylvania provider of emergency medical service and inter-hospital patient transports. The STAT MedEvac aircraft is a recent, upgraded version of the industry’s best-selling and most cost efficient twin-engine family of helicopters.

The National Police Air Service and the Police Service of Northern Ireland conducted a formation fly past over St. Paul’s Cathedral in the afternoon of 25 September as part of the service of remembrance for National Police Memorial Day 2016.

A fitting tribute to honour almost 4,000 fallen colleagues, police air support crews flew in a diamond formation with four aircraft above the congregation as they were leaving the service. Speaking about the fly past, Chief Superintendent Tyron Joyce, Chief Operating Officer for the National Police Air Service said: “National Police Memorial Day recognises the bravery and dedication of serving police officers across the UK. The UK Department for Transport bought 11 Sikorsky S92 and Agusta Westland AW189 helicopters from the American company Bristow for ÂŁ1.9 billion, but the helicopters themselves are too large to land at hospital helipads. The hospitals Newcastle, Glasgow, Leeds, Bristol and Sheffield are being affected by the lack of helicopters available. Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Charity (CMFT Charity) has reached £3.9 million for funds for a new helipad in central Manchester. The Time Saves Lives Helipad Appeal was established in September 2015 and thanks to all the supporters, the generous donations from County Air Ambulance Trust’s HELP and the Government’s LIBOR fines fund. They were able to collect all the funds needed in a year. As reported by Charity Today, they are proud to announce this during National Air Ambulance Week; which is the 19-25 September. The new helipad will be the first of its kind in Central Manchester, operating 24 hours a day on the top of a multi-story car park in Grafton Street. The helipad will be connected to the hospitals by a high-level link bridge and roof top corridors. Hospitals such as the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Saint Mary’s Hospital will be using the helipad. Spectrum Aeromed announced in midSeptember that the company’s equipment was installed on a new Bell 407GXP helicopter for Boise, Idaho based Idaho Helicopters. The new aircraft is equipped with a single patient pivot system and will fly Helicopter Air Ambulance for St. Luke’s Hospital. “We selected the Spectrum Aeromed system for a lot of reasons,” said Idaho Helicopters Director of Operations Steve Sandmeyer. “The Spectrum pivot system was easily installed. It did not require any additional mounting system. It also allows us to easily position the stretcher in a full forward or full aft position. Other systems would require us to remove a seat and are not as easy to maneuver patients. We also liked the build quality of the system. The way it is engineered made it a superior product. The Ministry of Interior of Estonia has decided to purchase a new MSS 7000 equipped aircraft from Bromma Air Maintenance AB. Bromma Air Maintenance AB will purchase, modify and equip an aircraft of the type Beech King Air 350i with the new MSS 7000 maritime surveillance system from ST Airborne Systems. The aircraft will be used for environmental patrol and aerial surveillance of the sea areas under Estonian responsibility. Delivery to the Estonian Border Guard is planned to mid-2018. The MSS 7000 is the latest generation of airborne maritime surveillance systems from ST Airborne Systems replacing the very successful MSS 6000 operated in many countries around the world. The Estonian Border Guard has operated their MSS 6000 system onboard a LET 410 aircraft since 2007. Estonia will be the first country to get the new MSS 7000 system. The new aircraft is currently under production in Wichita, USA and will then be flown to Sweden, where Bromma Air Maintenance will perform additional modifications and install the MSS 7000 system. The mood in the helicopter market has cooled somewhat in recent months. The oil industry turndown that has impacted economic conditions globally has also created significant challenges for the helicopter segment of the Business Aviation community.

2016 so far has been a tough year for the Helicopter market as billings and shipments continue to decline in both new and used models. We hope this downward trend will reverse itself with more new helicopter purchases in H2 2016. Although all of us like the lower gasoline prices that have resulted from lower oil prices, the helicopter market has suffered from the oil glut because of the limited offshore activity in oil drilling operations around the world.

New Helicopter Shipments H1 2016 vs H1 2015 Turbine & Piston Helicopter Shipments and Billings were reported by GAMA for the first six months of 2016 recently. Table A (below) compares the numbers reported with those reported by GAMA for the same period in 2015. We can see more than a -30% drop in total billings and a -16.1% decline in total shipments. Some readers may observe that decline as less of a ‘cool’ market, and more of a market in deep freeze!

New Helicopter Shipment Observations

In spite of the adverse overall market performance in 2016 vs 2015, interestingly Airbus Helicopters actually enjoyed an increase in the number of shipments this year over last (146 vs 113) and in billings ($658m vs $555m).

Civil Helicopter Market by Continent – 2016 As illustrated in Chart A (right), at the end of August 2016 there were 20,744 Turbine helicopters and 9,389 Piston helicopters in operation worldwide. The North American market (including Canada and Mexico) accounts for 42% of all Turbine and 40% of all Piston helicopters in operation worldwide. Europe, meanwhile accounts for a further 22% of the total of Turbine helicopters and 23% of the Piston helicopters. By Continent, Australia/Oceania remains the only Continent with more Piston helicopters (1,366) than Turbine helicopters (1,263).

However, until this year Robinson Helicopter Company has enjoyed a successful introduction of its R66 turbine model. During H1 2016 there were 25 new R66 shipments, representing a large drop from the 64 units reported in H1 2015. Nevertheless, there were 67 shipments of the new R44 Raven II piston powered helicopter representing five more units from the 62 shipments in H1 2015.

Used Turbine & Piston Helicopters Table B (below) shows the used helicopter worldwide trends for June 2016 and a comparison of H1 2016 versus H1 2015. The market for Turbine helicopters finished H1 2016 with 7.0% of the fleet ‘For Sale’ (a 0.5 point increase compared with H1 2015), while the Piston helicopters fleet ‘For Sale’ reached 5.7%, a 0.1 point increase over H1 2015. Reviewing the number of full retail sale transactions in H1 2016 compared to H1 2015, both the Turbine and Piston markets showed double-digit declines. The used Turbine helicopter market declined by -12.4% and there was a decrease of -2.6% in the average asking prices. The used Piston helicopter market saw a decline of -22.4% in the full retail sale transactions but a 5.1% increase in the average asking prices. In addition, used Piston helicopters remained on the market ‘For Sale’ for a shorter period (-40 days) before they sold in H1 2016 compared to H1 2015.
