One Aviation has announced the successful first flight of its aerodynamic proof-of-concept, EA700 (‘Project Canada’) wing. The experimental test aircraft N990NE was modified to test the new wing shape being used for the EA700 model currently in development. Changes to the wing include the overall four-foot increase in wingspan over that of the EA500/550, and reshaping of the inboard wing airfoils and planform. The expected shape of the production EA700 wing tips have not been included in this modification, however.

“We also decided on a different configuration so we could carry two more passengers. By adding a seventh seat, we can carry eight passengers including the pilot. We like to take as many staff as possible to cover more areas of responsibility on our trips. Previously, we often found ourselves short of one or two seats that we needed.” Time, Efficiency & Competitive Edge In total, Kellerstrass Enterprises has nine centers across three states. “In each of the central locations the average drive time is four and a half to five hours. The average flying time is 35-40 minutes. Instead of my

“Our business model is to purchase fuels from the refiners and take the products to the end user or the customers who are in all types of industries: mining, oil and gas, trucking, retail, construction, gasoline stations - we market in seven US states.” The geography Kellerstrass Enterprises serves requires a business aircraft. A notable portion of its market is nestled within mountain ranges, and the Scheduled Airlines do not serve those locations. It’s because of the geography of these destinations that the company opted to upgrade to a Phenom 100 EV recently. Offering additional operational capability including increased thrust and improved performance for operations into and out of the hot-and-high airports, the Phenom 100 EV also suited Kellerstrass’ need to transport more passengers from these destinations. “The new jet gives extra performance at high altitude and high temperatures, which we fly into a lot,” Craig elaborates. “We can be flying to airports at 6,000-7,500ft altitude. On a hot day, at high altitude, the performance is good for our use, and we find the Phenom 100 EV can do what another airplane could not.

Our cost to maintain and operate the Phenom 100 EV is $1,500 per hour – and most of our flights are within that one-hour range. Making those same flights on the Airlines would come close to $1,000 per person for a round trip – meaning if I take six people on a commercial flight it costs us $6,000. In the business jet we spend $3,000.” “Some days we can do two centers in the same day. Before, that would require a three-day road-trip. We also use the airplane as a tool to get my people safely to locations, more quickly, so they can be more productive and they can get back to the office without the use of company cars.” Craig also highlights how the business jet enables his company to react to both competitive and customer demands far more quickly. “The airplane is available whenever we need it - my staff can board the Phenom 100 EV and be in a location within 1.5 hours in most cases. We can also be at a customer location for any reason very quickly, which enables us to offer a better customer service.” Safety First One of the aspects of the Phenom 100 EV that impresses Craig the most is its safety performance. “In the mountains we have a lot of winter conditions. In winter time, it can be -10°F and snowing. In some of my locations, there is up to two or three feet of snow on the ground. Runways, for most of January, February or even March have some snow packed on them.” Unsurprisingly Craig thrives on the challenges that winter flying presents, and admires the braking system of his latest acquisition. “The Phenom 100 EV is much better on snow-packed icy runways. The jet’s speed-brakes and new braking system; it’s a big improvement.” Thus, with a successful business that demands flying into some of the toughest mountain ranges in the United States, Kellerstrass Enterprises has found the ideal business tool in the Embraer Phenom 100 EV specifically, and Business Aviation generally.

BizAv Activity - Europe

So far this year, inbound flights from the CIS region are up by 0.1% compared to last year.

Air Charter Scotland took delivery of a Citation XLS+ and has been steadily increasing hours on its Falcon 7X, which arrived in December 2016.

August proved to be the peak month so far in 2017, with 78,785 departures, up 5.5% YoY, according to WingX Advance. The latest numbers take the YTD trend to 3.3%, an additional 18,047 flights compared to 2016… Overall, August 2017 was the busiest ever August for flight activity, exceeding August 2008 by 1.3%. Private flight activity saw 3% growth, the highest so far this year. The four countries adding most growth were France, UK, Italy and Spain. 7% YoY growth in departures from France was reflected in a 9.5% jump in domestic flights. France is now trending at +1% YTD, up an average 147 flights per month. In the UK, Italy, Spain and Switzerland AOC activity growth came in double-digit increases. Private (Part 91) flight activity fell in UK and Switzerland, however. Germany was Europe’s second busiest market in August, with the strongest growth coming in Private flights. There was significant growth in south-eastern Europe during August, with flights from Turkey up by 14%, and Greece by 19%. (YTD 2017, Business Aviation activity in Greece is up by 15%, and AOC activity was up by 25%.) Whilst flights in Southern Europe grew more than 10% in August, activity in Eastern Europe was up by 6%, and flights into Europe from Russia increased by 5% YOY.

Business Aviation Traffic Tracker Europe

Business Aviation traffic in August went up by 8.8% compared to the same month last year, according to EBAA, marking ten months of continuous growth (not seen since 2010)… January-August 2017 period saw 6.0% growth (not seen since 2007). Up by 11.5% January-August, Spain and Portugal is amongst the healthiest region in this positive European overall trend. The French internal market is the biggest market in Europe in terms of movements, however, with an average 143 daily flights in August. It’s believed that Single-Engine Turboprops provide a great opportunity for the industry as a whole, and an exciting opportunity for the GA sector in particular to expand its footprint and find new markets for both manufacturers and service providers. The size of aircraft operating in the sector could open up thousands of new airfields and routes for aircraft operators and bring new opportunity for growth in the GA sector across Europe and beyond.

The conference was an opportunity for those in the GA sector to discover the latest developments since the announcement of the change in regulations regarding Single Engine Turboprop operations in Europe by EASA in March 2017. Delegates heard from some of the top administrators within Europe how these changes would impact the GA industry and what advantages these new changes could bring in the future, with separate events covering various aspects ranging from operations to finance.

Airframes Needed

One issue that came through loud and clear was the lack of airframes available at the moment, although others are currently in the pipeline. However, one of the main complaints that both aircraft operators and OEMs receive concerns the lack of certified aircraft simulators available within Europe, a point which was keenly discussed in the Q and A session. Another point that was discussed with some verve was that of aircraft financing which saw entrepreneurs clash with those from the finance sector over who should be helping business start-ups within the GA industry and where the money should come from for the overall good of the industry.

There will be a requirement to upgrade airport facilities, ensuring all runways are all-weather (wherever possible) and that the appropriate landing equipment and fire cover is on site, as well as ensuring that the appropriate ground connections are also available both prior to, and after landing for clients. It was also felt that it would be good pipeline for new pilots to both join the industry and gain sufficient experience prior to embarking on a career flying larger aircraft. However, there was also a cautionary side to the discussion as it is felt that Europe is at least 20 years behind other parts of the world in this area, especially the US, and that there is a difference in perception of GA as a whole within Europe and the US.

It was felt that this would help the industry in two ways, firstly by generating sales for the OEMs, and secondly by increasing the available options for startup companies to select an aircraft to best suit their needs and business model (be that charter, air taxi or other type of subscription-based model).

This issue occurs whenever the aircraft identification, such as an approved call sign, or tail number listed in a flight plan does not exactly match the ADS-B-transmitted identification, AEA said.

Lycoming Extends TBOs The FAA has approved a 200-hour increase for time intervals between engine overhauls. This is welcome news to users of this engine following the FAA decision to sign off on an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMOC) to Airworthiness Directive AD-201219-01 regarding the TBO schedule for a long list of Lycoming engines.

This investment is part of BP Ventures’ strategy to invest to accelerate the development, commercial viability and deployment of digital technologies and offers across the BP group. Air BP, which has a growing digital presence, stands to further benefit from this new collaboration.

The affected engines along with details for overhaul schedules are listed in Service Instruction No. 1009. While the calendar time limit for TBO remains at 12 years, the AMOC extends the TBO by 200 hours.

Always Ask First The best advice is to ask the local tax authorities for a binding advance tax ruling prior to any importation /admission in order to eliminate any doubt about the outcome. All cases are different in the details, and a binding advance tax ruling will also take into account all new ECJ judgements. Even if you think you have a fully working setup, it is too risky to go through with the importation /admission without a binding advance tax ruling from the EU member state into which the aircraft is to be imported.

The Aircraft Electronics Association is warning business aircraft operators about the potential for aircraft identification mismatch when using ADS-B Out equipment.

What to do for a Non-EU Based Entity Use Temporary Admission. Most non-EU operators have already changed to using Temporary Admission. Full importation includes a lot of potential VAT/tax-liability which nobody wants and typically requires five years of correct economic activity and seven years of record-keeping. All these factors are eliminated by using Temporary Admission, and most non-EU operators will in fact have the same flying privileges as under full importation as the few limitations that do exist do not influence the typical corporate flight and will give the declarant more flexibility and extra advantages, such as unrestricted personal/family/guest use, also for EU-resident passengers.

AEA Warns of Potential Aircraft ID Mismatch with ADS-B

BP announced an initial investment and the creation of a strategic partnership between its BP Ventures and Air BP businesses with Victor, one of the world’s leading ‘ondemand’ marketplaces for private jet charters.

The general rule is that 100% of the import VAT can be reclaimed only if the aircraft is used entirely for acceptable VAT taxable economic activities. Any persons using the aircraft for private/personal/entertainment purposes must compensate the importer directly for the use – otherwise the importer will have to pay the “non-business” part of the imposed import VAT back to the appropriate VAT authorities.

BP to Invest $10m With Victor

It is a common misunderstanding that it’s acceptable to reclaim all the import VAT even if the aircraft is only “predominately used for business”. In light of this Opmas commissioned a survey across various EU member states known for aircraft importation to discover how wide the issue may be.

The only exception is that two EU member states allow 100% VAT to be reclaimed up front if the importer’s VAT declaration is later corrected to exclude the non-business part, which must then eventually be paid back to the VAT authorities . What to do for an EU Based Entity Analyse your usage of the aircraft and eventually consult your local VAT adviser for a verification of the exact usage.

While less common, a tail number mismatch could be caused by a “simple typo” when a technician first programs the ADS-B Out unit, it noted. The more likely scenario of such a mismatch lies with operators that use a call sign on some or all of their flights. This is especially true for those using common special call signs for priority ATC handling, such as “Lifeguard,” “Medevac” or “Compassion,” or call signs provided by a flight-planning company. To avoid an aircraft identification mismatch when using a call sign, FAA aviation safety inspector James Kenney recommended that operators install an ADS-B unit with a pilot-programmable call sign feature and require pilots to check that the inputted data matches the aircraft identification block in their FAA flight plan. Those without a pilot-programmable ADS-B unit should use their tail number in the aircraft identification block and include the call sign in the remarks section of their flight plan, he said. ■ More information from: aea.net

H145 Simulator Granted Approval in Germany

The H145 simulator at the Airbus Helicopters Training Academy in Germany has been awarded Level D status by the German Federal Aviation Office – the highest possible certification for a full flight simulator. Not only is it the world’s first certified full flight simulator for the H145, but it is also the first helicopter simulator in Germany to receive EASA Level D certification. The simulator based at Donauwörth fulfils and partially exceeds the requirements. An additional important feature of the new simulator is that it can accommodate developments that are still on the horizon: the simulator cockpit developed and constructed in-house by Airbus Helicopters can be easily rolled on and off the simulator, allowing it to be replaced with other configurations. This guarantees maximum flexibility with regards to future helicopter variants or configurations. Luxaviation Acquires Starspeed

Luxaviation Helicopters announced the acquisition of Starspeed, the global helicopter management, charter and training company. This is Luxaviation Helicopters’ first acquisition since launching in February 2017, and will see the incorporation of Starspeed’s fleet of 23 helicopters into its own fleet of managed and charter helicopters. The goal is to provide clients of both companies an expanded and integrated portfolio of helicopter and jet aviation services. Starspeed will retain its identity, leadership and personnel while benefitting from an expanded back office and the wider breadth of resources which Luxaviation Helicopters provides. In total the group will have 42 helicopters in the new combined fleet.
