Looking to the Future - No Urban Limits
Increased urbanisation is pushing our cities’ transport systems to the limits, costing valuable time and money. Airbus believes the solution lies in the sky. From flying vehicles to helicopters on demand, its portfolio of ground-breaking projects is helping to make urban air mobility a reality. City streets are often a blur of movement: cars, trucks, buses, trams, scooters and bicycles all jostle for space, trying to make their way from A to B as quickly as possible. Sometimes, though, that motion grinds to a halt. As traffic jams grow, frustration rises, time is wasted and money lost. Getting around can quickly become a nightmare. Airbus wants to fix this.
Instead of looking at ground level, it is focusing its attention on a part of the city that remains congestion-free: the sky. “Imagine a world in which city travel is faster, safer, more reliable and more stressfree. Adding a third dimension to urban transport networks would revolutionise the way we live,” says Mathias Thomsen, General Manager for Urban Air Mobility at Airbus. “Streets would be safer, air

Thomsen is overseeing several urban air mobility projects at Airbus, from ondemand helicopter rides to shared flying vehicles and delivery drones. If that sounds like science fiction, the company is building on currently viable technology and plans to flight test a single passenger demonstrator as early as the end of this year. Solutions to the urban mobility problem are certainly required. Urbanisation is a dominant trend around the globe and by 2030, more than 60 per cent of the world’s population will be living in cities, stretching struggling ground transportation networks even further. In the EU, traffic congestion currently costs almost €100bn a year. By 2030, it could be closer to €300bn. American drivers lose an average of 42 hours a year in traffic jams. “We can’t keep overloading our roads,” says Thomsen, “but what we can do is take advantage of the space above us.”

CHC Helicopter signed a contract with Airbus Helicopters for an HCare Smart full-by-the-hour (FBH) contract. It will support a smooth entry into service for CHC’s first medium-twin H175.
As one of the key services introduced by the HCare Smart offer, the FBH contract comprises the supply of spare parts and consumables, on top of parts-by-the-hour (PBH) coverage. It bundles in one single contract the provision of all parts needed for the maintenance of the aircraft, leading to better cost control and forecasting, coupled with easier day-to-day management for operators.

Airbus Helicopters recently started autonomous flight trials of a VSR700 Optionally Piloted Vehicle (OPV) demonstrator, paving the way for a first flight of the actual VSR700 prototype in 2018. A light military rotary-wing tactical unmanned aerial vehicle, the VSR700 is being developed jointly by Airbus Helicopters and Helicopteres Guimbal, the original manufacturer of the civil-certified Cabri G2 helicopter from which the VSR700 is derived. This phase of flight trials with a safety pilot will focus on refining Airbus Helicopters’ automatic flight control system aboard the OPV, eventually leading to fully autonomous flights without a safety pilot.

FAA Certifies Robinson R66 Turbine Newscopter
Also standard are Garmin’s G500H PFD/MFD system, Garmin’s GTN 650 navigator, three HD micro cameras, two seven-inch monitors, and two Geneva digital audio controllers. Biggin Hill Airport’s London Heli Shuttle service, operated by Castle Air, is announcing it has grown its fleet to six AugustaWestland AW109 Grands. Since its launch in December 2015, the London Heli Shuttle service has completed 2,500 helicopter transfers. At just six minutes, the heli shuttle affords passengers the fastest transfer to and from the centre of London. Andy Patsalides, marketing manager at London Biggin Hill Airport, said: “We established our helicopter transfer following feedback that our clients wanted the fastest route to central London. From Olympic Heights to Rotor Heights

of the best riders in Europe are competing for a World Cup victory, including Morgenstern.
Born in Spittal on the Drau in Austria on October 30, 1984 it was clear that Thomas Morgenstern would grow up with snow in his childhood. Coming from a very sporty family, he was encouraged to try different sports from a young age, but it was not until he was nine years old that he encountered a ski jumping slope for the first time.
“So far we can be satisfied with our performances especially third place in the Fender competition at the first World Cup stop in Wycombe (GBR) which was a great success,” he reflects. “In contrast to our competition we still lack the experience as a team but we are satisfied with our development and will continue to try to surprise the more experienced crews.”
“During the course of my time as a skier, I also took advantage of numerous flights sitting next to Flying Bulls’ helicopter chief pilot Siegfried Schwarz aboard the BO-105 and EC-135 – and I fell in love with helicopters. In 2012 I learned to fly helicopters.”
”Ski jumping fascinated me, so I trained intensively to become better and to meet the dream of one day becoming an Olympic gold medallist,” he recalls. 21 years later, Morgenstern looks back on a career in which he managed to achieve several gold medals at the Olympic Games, World Championship titles, overall World Cups, and triumphed at the prestigious Four Hills Tournament. Only five people can claim to have won all four big ski jumping competitions, and Morgenstern is understandably proud of his achievements.

But ski jumping isn’t the only passion in Morgenstern’s life. “Even during my ski jumping career, I devoted myself enthusiastically to aviation,” he explains. “The enthusiasm for flying was awakened as part of a photoshoot, during which I was able to fly in an Alpha Jet with Flying Bulls’ chief pilot. Filled with desire to get behind the wheel, I began flying in 2008.

Morgenstern is especially looking forward to the World Cup in Spitzerberg, Austria (September 8-10) and hopes many people will come to watch. “The new head-to-head format makes the competitions equally exciting for spectators and pilots.”
Since gaining a private pilot’s license in helicopters, Morgenstern regularly flies Helina, his Robinson R44 Raven II, and competes in Helicopter sports competitions with the Heliteam Austria. Indeed, in 2015, he was able to take the junior world title as a rookie (less than 250 flight hours) at the Helicopter World Championships in Zielona Gora (POL), and only a few months later flew his way to the bronze medal with co-pilot Stefan Seer at the World Air Games in Dubai (UAE).

Until recently, Airbus was evaluating the E-Fan
aircraft - a programme launched in 2014 but cancelled in early 2017 to enable Airbus to concentrate on collaborating and developing hybrid-electric systems. Italy-based Tecnam has been working closely with NASA in developing an aircraft that uses batteries to fly, and in doing so, the company is completing a second P2006T aircraft. NASA is evaluating LEAPtech (Leading Edge Asynchronous Technology) with the aim of developing a safer, more energy efficient, loweroperating-cost, greener General Aviation aircraft.

In selecting an already cost effective and highly efficient twin piston aircraft NASA will seek to produce an identical platform powered by two e-motors and finally develop “a completely new configuration that will feature the same fuselage and tails with a new design wing with distributed power,” Russo details. “Electric flight, as it is happening within the car industry, will play a great role in the aviation industry and almost everyone (from manufacturers to customers up to Civil Aviation Authorities and ASTM) understand this.” In Russo’s opinion, however, it’s because of shortfalls in battery technology that it will be a while before customers begin preferring electric aircraft over gasoline, however.

‘Parallel’ Hybrid Potential The ‘parallel’ hybrid, as Russo calls it, would enable the propeller to be driven both by gasoline and e-motors, an application that he points out is actually one of the few solutions really capable of accommodating the battery development as it becomes available. A part of the power will be generated by an e-motor, while the rest of the power needed will come via the standard, internal combustion engine. “In all cases, the future is really promising, and Tecnam is ready to play its role in this futuristic scenario,” Russo assures. There is still a long road ahead to developing electric-powered aircraft that can fly for several hours at a time, but there now seems to be momentum, and the required technology is making great strides forward. Along with the automotive industry, where much of the technology will be advanced faster, this form of power will become a reality sooner rather than later.
“Batteries endurance can fulfil training needs, but not those of the longer crosscountry flight operations. One option could be the ‘parallel’ hybrid,” he offers.

Broadening your Cockpit Outlook to Beyond 2020… With the NextGen mandate rapidly bearing down on the Business Aviation community, Brian Wilson highlights how operators can benefit by focussing on life beyond January 1, 2020… Working in Business Aviation, sometimes it seems impossible to get through a morning without reading about NextGen. With just cause, significant emphasis is being placed on the number of aircraft that still need to be upgraded. At such a time as this, however, we can miss the fact that there will be life beyond January 1, 2020… Indeed, some MROs are taking vintage aircraft and offering a ‘remanufactured’ product that features new integrated cockpits meeting both the airspace modernization deadlines and updating the display technology. I have observed both private and charter operators taking advantage of these offers. Crew and passengers can enjoy an increased level of safety, reliability and technology aboard their aircraft.
It’s Later Than You Think…
When approaching NextGen as a topic, pay heed to the old Chinese proverb that warns, ‘It’s later than you think’. If the days of RVSM and TAWS deadlines are any indicator of how the fleet will approach the NextGen mandate, we will see many aircraft parked on the tarmac well past the equipage period awaiting their slot to upgrade. The experiences of the chief pilot of a super-midsized business jet is worth noting. His flight department has operated the aircraft for about five years, and its meets the mission needs of the company well. He learned from the prior RVSM and TAWS mandates that waiting until the last second to comply with NextGen will cost his company more money and likely require an unscheduled maintenance event. This time his company planned the upgrade meticulously. Although the aircraft will be upgraded during a non-scheduled event, this chief pilot’s operation benefitted from choosing when the work would be initiated, and the MRO offered financial incentives to do the upgrade early. An ‘early adopter’ cash incentive is a common theme (although you might have to ask for it). The upgrade the chief pilot requested includes a new flight display system that not only meets all the required mandates, but offers enhanced capability, improved reliability and packaged cost savings. The aircraft owner is getting great value, and the flight department expects to see an immediate Return on Investment (ROI). Cash incentive and immediate ROI proved sufficiently compelling for the chief pilot to down the aircraft for 25 days, begging the question how can non-compliant aircraft sell in today’s buyers’ market. A quick survey of industry brokers reveals the same response—only with difficulty. Second to Wi-Fi, aircraft not equipped with NextGen are impacting resale values negatively. One senior broker summarized “If the aircraft does not have NextGen compliance and Wi-Fi, we inform the owner that the aircraft will only sell at a significant discount.”
Technologies Worth Considering
Following are a few technologies that you might want to consider in addition to NextGen updates you need to make in the coming months. Synthetic Vision System (SVS): Synthetic Vision increases safety and improves situational awareness for the crew by combining an advanced database of topographical maps with GPS position. The resulting 3D terrain view provides the crew with a clear visualization of obstacles and provides a pseudo Highway in the Sky. One pilot recently noted how the system paid for itself on a recent flight when, on a night approach into an unfamiliar airport nestled within a valley, the SVS gave him a clear view of a rocky terrain 24 TURBINE BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2017
directly beneath the glide-path. This capability allowed the crew to prepare their descent and avoid possible TAWS warnings. When on the ground taxiing around the airport, SVS is a gamechanger because many runway and taxiway markings are weathered and difficult to read, especially at night. Electronic Charts/Approach Plates: Having an integrated flight information system reduces the crew workload compared to using remote Electronic Flight Bags (EFB). This embedded system shares data with the onboard Flight Management System (FMS) to automate chart selection and allow an overlay of the aircraft’s present position on the chart. Graphical Broadcast Weather Overlays: The radar system onboard today’s aircraft is a valuable tool for the crew. The ‘art’ of using the radar effectively correlates directly to the experience of the airman flying the aircraft. Having an embedded graphical weather presentation superimposed on the existing aircraft flight plan is highly beneficial. The information is continuously updated, and the crew can check the weather at a destination airport even before they depart – a powerful asset in regions and during seasons where weather can change in a matter of minutes. Embedded Radio Tuning: Today’s modern cockpits also include a centralized control system that eliminates the need for external radio tuning units, FMS and display controllers. They typically incorporate a common control display unit, a keyboard and a cursor control panel. One common controller for each crew member allows the selection of display configuration, waypoints, NAV sources, engine data and even TCAS and transponder control. LPV Approaches: Localizer Performance with Vertical (LPV) Guidance allows the crew to fly the highest precision approach available. The approach criteria can provide the same minima (200ft) as a CAT 1 ground based ILS system. The FMS in the aircraft will have to be replaced with a new Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS) capability within the Flight Management System. To fly LPV approaches, you must either have dual SBAS FMS or a single FMS and a remote LPV monitor. The reduction in flight hours and fuel consumption related to better routing can reap a return on investment within three to five years (based on hours flown annually).
In Summary
There are a few additional points to consider beyond the technology enhancements discussed in this article. For example, with careful applications of technology, your aircraft will hold its value and could increase in value. Almost all the cockpit modernization programs are incorporated into Aircraft Bluebook pricing, allowing your aircraft to stand out from the fleet. In addition, new equipment typically comes with a full warranty. It’s worth considering combining your remaining avionics into a warranty coverage plan that allows you to pay an annual fee for free exchanges. These warranty programs will supplement the financial value of your upgrade and reduce your operating costs in the coming years—a concept CFOs like. Then you’ll be free to look to life beyond NextGen mandates!

A Good Year for Daher
Daher today recognized the TBM community’s strong presence at this year’s EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in July, with the participation of 60 TBM very fast turboprop airplanes – once again representing the largest number of turbine-powered aircraft at the annual fly-in. Several TBMs made long flights to join the world-leading aviation gathering at Wittman Regional Airport, with eight coming from Europe (including an airplane piloted by David Fabry, manager of Flying Smart – the UK TBM distributor), and a TBM 900 from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Daher concluded the sale of four pre-owned TBMs at Oshkosh along with two TBM 930s – one of which will be delivered to a customer in the US state of Georgia. The other TBM 930 is for Canada – an important growth market for Daher – and will be based in the Toronto metropolitan area. The new Canadian owner, who is transitioning from a piston single-engine aircraft, was attracted to the TBM 930 because of its features and capabilities. TBM 900-series aircraft already have received more than 200 orders since their launch, with 185 delivered through July 2017. They are built by Daher on its industrial site at the airport of Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées (Hautes Pyrénées), France.

GAMA Q2 2017 New Airplane Shipment Analysis
In the middle of the jet market things were looking a little better. Newcomer Honda is beginning to hit its deliveries stride, and captured fifth place with 24 units, up from 10 in the same period last year. Dassault, which only reports on the half year cycle, was in sixth place with 17 units for H1 2017 (up from 15 in H1 2016).
Total aircraft deliveries for H1 2017 came in at 995 units, 2.7% ahead of H1 2016, largely on the back of a strong performance in the piston market. Billings totalled $9.0bn, lagging last year’s total by $0.4bn, and reflects continued weakness in the top end of the jet market and some softness in the traditional turboprop market, particularly in the twin-engine segment.
The remaining four companies in the jet market all had results in single-digit range, and thus had limited impact on the overall market. These included One Aviation (four, level-pegging with 2016), Boeing (three, up from one a year ago), Cirrus (two, up from zero), and Airbus (no deliveries in either year). Cirrus reportedly has a strong backlog, so we can expect to see SF-50 shipments advance in the H2 2017.
The General Aviation Manufacturers Association issued its Q2 2017 shipment report and the results were mixed. Mike Potts analyses the statistics to sift the positive trends from the negative…
As reported by GAMA, jet deliveries were 1% ahead of last year at 295 units (versus 292); turboprops totalled 232 deliveries (versus 234 last year) and Pistons were a particularly bright spot with 468 units, up 5.6% from the 443 delivered last year. The Jet Market The overall performance of the jet market was mixed, with five OEMs ahead of their H1 2016 totals, three down from a year ago and two finishing even. To put this in perspective, however, it’s necessary to note that the three companies with reduced totals are in the top four positions for jet deliveries. Leading the jet market by a fairly wide margin was Cessna (81 units), which enjoyed a strong performance from its new Latitude. The Latitude recorded 23 deliveries in H1 2017. The next best-selling Cessna jet was the M2 (15 units), followed by the CJ3+ (11 – less than half the Latitude’s total and offering strong support to the theory that new aircraft models such as the Latitude can drive significant sales growth. Bombardier captured second place in jet sales with 65 units, down from the 73 units reported in H1 2016. Bombardier’s weakness was mostly found in Q2 2017 when it shipped 36 units (versus 42 in Q2 2016). Gulfstream made 60 deliveries, down a single unit from H1 2016. Like Bombardier, Gulfstream’s Q2 2017 was weaker than a year ago, down four units from 34 to 30. Embraer, meanwhile, finished in fourth place with 39 units, down from 49 in H1 2016. Q2 2017 was closer to Embraer’s prior year total at 24 units, down from 26.
The Turboprop Market Among the nine builders of traditional business aircraft, four had improved results from a year ago and five were off their 2016 pace. The companies with downturns were among the bigger players, so the impact of the unit reductions was greater. Among the traditional business turboprops the market is not doing nearly as well as GAMA’s headline numbers suggest. Subtracting agricultural turboprop deliveries, units have totaled 146 units so far in 2017, down from 165 in H1 2016 (a reduction of 11.52%). This included 55 units in Q1 2017 and 91 in Q2, down from 68 in Q1 2016 and 97 in Q2. Much of the weakness in turboprops is in the multi-engine category where the 31 units delivered so far this year is down 34% from the 50 units GAMA listed a year ago. Beechcraft and Pilatus tied for first place in traditional business turboprops with 31 units each (both were down from a year ago when Beechcraft had 49 and Pilatus 38). The next four turboprop companies were bunched fairly tightly, with Daher in third place (23 in H1 2016, up from 18 last year), followed by Cessna (22, down from 32); then Piper (19, up from eight), and Quest (17, up from 16). The balance of the turboprop market was made up of Chinese AVIC (two, up from zero), Pacific Aerospace (one, down from three), and Piaggio (zero, down from one). In the piston market Cirrus was the unsurprising leader with 149 units, followed distantly by Cessna with 98 and Diamond with 67. Collectively Cirrus, Cessna and Diamond accounted for 67% of the total piston market.

PC-6 The End of an Era
It brought fame to the Pilatus name worldwide â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Pilatus Porter PC-6. This multi-role aircraft has been produced at Stans without interruption since 1959, currently in small numbers, i.e. 10 machines per year at most. The PC-6 is one of the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longestrunning production stories in the aviation industry. That will come to an end in early 2019 when production will be ceased. Support will be provided to existing customers for the next 20 years at least, thereby ensuring reliable ongoing PC-6 operations. Pilatus has produced a total of 500 PC-6s in Stans since 1959. Elixir aircraft test pilot Daniel Serres sat expectantly in the pilotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat of his aircraft as he waited on the runway at La Rochelle airport for a Ryanair Boeing 737 take-off for England. The reason for his anticipation was that he was sitting at the controls of the maiden flight of Elixir aircraft, Fox whiskey Lima X - ray Romeo, after five days of ground testing. After taxiing the aircraft to end of the runway Daniel got final clearance from air traffic control and powered the aircraft down the runway and to the delight of all involved took to the skies for the first time in the new aircraft.

Eric Melrose Brown was born in Leith on January 21, 1919, was brought up in Galashiels and schooled at the Royal High School. His interest in aviation stemmed from his father who trained to become a pilot in the Royal Flying Corps in the later stages of the First World War. It was during a trip to Germany in 1936 and already enthusiastic about flying that he flew with the First World War ace Ernst Udet, who persuaded him to learn German and to learn to fly. Brown recalled the incident nearly 80 years later on the BBC radio programme Desert Island Discs, he said: “You talk about aerobatics – we did everyone I think and I was hanging on to my tummy. So, when we landed, and he gave me the fright of my life because we approached upside-down and then he rolled out just in time to land, he said to me as I got out of the cockpit, slapped me between the shoulder-blades, and gave me the old WWI fighter pilots’ greeting, Halsund Beinbruch, which means broken neck and broken legs but that was their greeting. But he said to me, you'll make a fine fighter

It was not only his flying skills that were bought to bear during his career as he was also involved in the interrogation of senior German officers about the captured equipment which ranged from aircraft to V1 and V2 rocket technology. In his test flying career, he achieved the remarkable feat of flying 487 different aircraft types and amassing a world record of 2,407 carrier deck landings. He was a past President of the Royal Aeronautical Society; an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and a Master Pilot of Russia. In 2008 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate (D hc) from Edinburgh University. He died on February 21, 2016 aged 97. In memory of his outstanding achievements the Edinburgh University Air Squadron Association is aiming to raise sufficient funds for a memorial bronze statue of 'Winkle' to be located just outside the main entrance to the terminal building of Edinburgh Airport, formally RAF Turnhouse, where he learned to fly. In addition it is hoped to raise sufficient funds to enable several young people to learn to fly through Flying Scholarships. ■ More information from: www.edinburghuas.com
Archive deHavilland Mosquito Discovered
An astonishing collection of thousands of microfilm aperture cards, containing secret wartime plans for the deHavilland Mosquito, one of the UK’s most innovative aircraft, has been saved from destruction. Just days before the bulldozers were due, The People’s Mosquito, a UK charity that aims to return a Mosquito to British skies, was called with news of the find. An amazing array of specialized modifications are described in the plans, including wartime variants designed to carry torpedoes (possibly for attacking the German battleship Tirpitz), and another featuring desert survival equipment, potentially destined for North Africa. The set of more than 20,000 wartime technical drawings and diagrams has so far raised as many questions as it has answered.
WYCOMBE AIR PARK
When war was declared in September 1939 he was teaching English on a student exchange scheme in Germany, and he rushed back to Edinburgh to join up. The RAF was not short of pilots at that stage – so he joined the Fleet Air Arm as a pilot. After further intensive training for naval aviation, he joined 802 Squadron based at Donibristle. It was his RN colleagues that gave him the nickname ‘Winkle’ - referring to his modest stature that could fit into any cockpit.

This includes cracks on both tail booms, warping of the main bulk heads in the engine compartment and major damage to the gear box. The important factor here was speed of landing. The Sea Vixen suffered a major hydraulic failure of both systems and the pilot, Commander Simon Hargreaves was unable to lower the flaps along with the under-carriage. Universal Aviation UK, based at London-Stansted International Airport (EGSS) has passed an International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) audit and is now an official IS-BAH accredited location. Universal Aviation, the ground support division of Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc., has more than 40 locations in 20 countries. “This is an extremely proud day for Universal Aviation, and is official recognition of our efforts is reducing our clients’ operating risk and stress when on the ground,” explained Sean Raftery, Managing Director, Universal Aviation UK and Ireland. “Our Universal Aviation Safety Team is committed to having the highest global safety standards and has worked tirelessly over the past two years to attain this mark of distinction for our location.” The International Standard for Business Aircraft Handling (IS-BAH) is a set of global industry best practices for business aviation ground handlers, which features at its core a safety management system (SMS). The IS-BAH follows the structure of the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) Program and incorporates the NATA Safety first Ground Audit Program. IS-BAH is the global industry standard for handlers and operators around the world to meet the coming SMS requirements from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Air BP announces third biojet-supplied location in Norway
Air BP, the international aviation fuel products and service supplier, is now offering commercial jet biofuel (biojet) to customers at Bergen airport in Norway (BGO/ENBR). The first batch was delivered to the airport on August 16.
Universal Aviation Singapore is currently going through the IS-BAH accreditation process and more locations are scheduled in the coming year.
This follows Air BP’s successful introduction of biojet at Halmstad airport in Sweden in June 2017 and at Oslo airport in Norway in January 2016. As with Oslo, Air BP has worked with Norwegian airport operator Avinor to make this latest development possible.
ADS-B can help reduce airspace infringements and mid-air collisions
Air BP has also supplied airlines on an ad-hoc basis at airports including Stockholm Arlanda (ARN/ESSA), Stockholm Bromma (BMA/ESSB), Karlstad (KSD/ESOK) and Göteborg Landvetter (GOT/ESGG).

The CAA confirms ADS-B in/out using 1090MHz is its preferred national system to improve electronic conspicuity. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) today confirmed that ADS-B 'in/out' using 1090MHz is its preferred national system to improve electronic conspicuity for general aviation, ideally used through transponders. The CAA is already working with the GA community and industry to develop an integrated electronic surveillance solution offering both airborne and ground environment benefits. Increasing the number of aircraft with electronic conspicuity capability will have the potential to: • Enhance safety through improved situational awareness for both pilots and air traffic control; • Reduce infringements of controlled airspace; • Improve access to the UK's increasingly busy airspace.
To help encourage ADS-B take-up by the GA community, the CAA has today launched a survey seeking information on the types of devices private pilots already use and what they would prefer to use in future. The survey can be seen at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/UKGAEC and closes on September 29. A number of trials will also be taking place to assess systems and potential uses. These include:
A trial at Dundee Airport (run by Highlands and Islands Airports) to investigate a low cost system receiving Mode-S and ADS-B data to provide air traffic controllers with more information on aircraft operating outside of controlled airspace.
The transmission of weather data from the ground direct to a GA aircraft cockpit via 978MHz. This trial is being undertaken by an equipment manufacturer (uAvionix) and aeronautical information service provider (SkyDemon). In the longer term this system may also assist drones in safely integrating into the UK's airspace. Garmin Avionics Package for Cessna 421B Golden Eagle
Southeast Aerospace Southeast Aerospace has recently completed a multifaceted Cessna 421B Garmin Avionics package installation. The Garmin Avionics package included the installation of a GTN-750 and GNC-255A for radio communication. The intercom system was wired for a four passenger ICS. Music inputs were placed on the aircraft instrument panel and one at the VIP seat for music input via a customer personal device. The GTN-750 was interfaced to the new system 55X and G600 EFIS. The dual transponders were interfaced to the GTN-750 for control. The GTX-345 was panel mounted but able to be controlled via its face plate or the GTN-750. The GTX-335 was remote mounted and controlled via the GTN-750.

This installation incorporated the Flight Stream 510 inserted into the GTN-750 to provide wireless interface with a tablet or smart phone for ADS-B In display and database updates for the GTN and the G600 systems.
