Aircraft Comparative Analysis Airbus H125 vs Bell 206L-4
Analyst Mike Chase provides information on a pair of popular single-turbine light helicopters for the purpose of valuing the Airbus H125.
Over the following paragraphs, we’ll analyse the performance of the Airbus H125 and Bell’s 206L-4 to see how they compare within the market. The data contained in Table A is sourced from Conklin & de Decker. A potential operator should focus on payload capability as a key factor. The Airbus H125 ‘Available Payload with Maximum Fuel’ (987lbs) is more than that offered by the Bell 206L-4 (737lbs).
Cabin and Sections
According to Conklin & de Decker, the Airbus H125 cabin volume measures 61 cubic feet. The Bell 206L-4 has more cabin volume (73 cubic feet). Chart A, courtesy of UPCAST JETBOOK, offers a cabin cross-section comparison, showing the Airbus H125 has more width (5.41 ft. vs 3.9 ft.) and slightly more height (4.26 ft. vs 4.2 ft.) than the Bell 206L-4 cabin. Also, the cabin length of the Airbus H125 is longer (6.56 ft. vs 5 ft.). So where does the Bell model get its cabin volume advantage from? Conklin & de Decker measures its cabin volumes based on the full shape, and in this case the more curved windshield of the Airbus model accounts for the difference. Meanwhile, the Airbus H125 has 35 cubic feet of external and no internal baggage space, while the Bell 206L-4 has 20 cubic feet of external baggage space and 2 cubic feet of internal baggage space. The typical seating configuration for Airbus H125 offers one less passenger seat at four seats with one crew member, while the Bell 206L-4 offers five passenger seats with one crew member.
Range Comparison
The Airbus H125 helicopter with a Seats Full range of 300nm is greater than that of the Bell 206L-4 (253nm), according Conklin & de Decker data.
Total Variable Cost
The ‘Total Variable Cost’ illustrated in Chart B is defined as the Cost of Fuel Expense, Maintenance Labor Expense, Scheduled Parts Expense and Miscellaneous Trip Expense. The Total Variable Cost for the Airbus H125 computes at $614 per hour, which is $26 (4.4%) higher than the Bell 206L-4 at $588 per hour.
Asking Prices & Quantity
The current used helicopter market for the Airbus H125 shows a total of 17 helicopters ‘For Sale’ with 13 displaying an asking price ranging from $1.511m to $3.1m. We also reviewed the 40 used Bell 206L-4 helicopters ‘For Sale’, which rendered 24 asking prices ranging

between $720k and $1.9m. While each serial number is unique, the Airframe (AFTT) hours and age/condition will cause great variations in price. Of course, the final negotiated price remains to be decided between the seller and buyer before the sale of an aircraft is completed.
Productivity Comparisons
Others may choose different parameters, but serious helicopter buyers are usually impressed with Price, Range, Speed and Cabin Size. The Airbus H125 shows a higher new retail price than the Bell 206L-4, but greater productivity. Specifically, the Airbus H125 has greater ‘Payload with Full Fuel’ capability, greater range and higher cruise speed (122Kts vs 110 Kts). Meanwhile, the Bell 206L-4 offers a larger cabin volume, lower variable operating cost and an extra passenger seat.
$600
$800
US $ per hour
The Airbus H125 averages 11 units sold per month and is still a popular model on the helicopter sales market today. Operators should weigh up their mission requirements precisely when picking which option is the best for them. The Airbus H125 continues to be popular today. Our expectations are that the Airbus H125 will continue to do well on the new/used helicopter market for the foreseeable future.

Kopter SH09 For Missions Accomplished ! SEE PAGE 2 FOR MORE DETAILS
P05.qxp_Master Page RHPage GA 10/09/2018 15:13 Page 2
Kopter Group
Kopter Group was founded for the purpose of developing, manufacturing and supporting a new generation of helicopters. With this vision in mind, Kopter Group launched the SH09, offering the highest standards of safety, mission capability and cost efficiency. The SH09 delivers best in class hot and high performance, the largest cabin/cargo volumes, outstanding modularity and modern electronic systems. Starting this fall, Kopter will undertake an intensive flight test campaign in Sicily, Italy, first with its third prototype (P3) and then with its pre-series 4 (PS), to reach certification. Many customers from various geographies and mission profiles have already put their trust into the SH09 program.
Why this success? Comparable aircrafts on the market are to a great extent based on 40 year-old platforms and certification standards. There is consequently space to make a difference with a product that will be certified to the most recent authority standards. The SH09 will, by definition, be safer and more reliable on systems level. Kopter is introducing features on the aircraft that are only found on advanced twin engine helicopters.
As an example, the SH09 includes dual redundant hydraulics, double channel FADEC, a full crashworthy fuel system and a modern Garmin Avionics suite, which will significantly reduce pilot workload, increase situation awareness and boost the aircraft operational safety margins. The carbon fiber airframe makes the aircraft not only safer, but also lighter. This grants superior mission performance, more payload, more lift capacity. The cabin layout gives the aircraft an unequalled mission versatility, allowing to perform all EMS, law enforcement, passenger transport or aerial work missions.
Customer Support Kopter will ensure the availability of a solid customer support organization from the beginning of SH09 operations, so that its aircraft will be operated at their full potential. Having all necessary services fully operational at entry into service is key, in particular suitable AOG technical support, AOG parts delivery, training, field support and documentation. Kopter is also working on connected services, to allow operators to have an easy access to all needed data and benefit from the latest technologies in terms of aircraft operation and maintenance. The connected services will reduce operation and maintenance costs, improve safety and increase availability for operators around the globe.

StandardAero
Propels Future Helicopter Equipment Development With a fresh portfolio of helicopter support services and the recent success of
StandardAero’s crash-resistant fuel tank, the opportunity to advance future support offerings and introduce emerging technologies to the helicopter industry has never been greater.
For more than a century, StandardAero has been known as a leading provider in aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul services, and the company’s expertise when it comes to the popular Rolls-Royce M250 engine is, in essence, synonymous with its name.
Administration (FAA) and EASA approvals evidenced that the “industry as a whole is keenly focused on making safety enhancements a reality.” Now, with the overwhelming success of the crashresistant fuel tank, from research and development, to certification and entry into service StandardAero is setting its sights on continuing STC development initiatives that will introduce new technologies and enhance occupant safety for both legacy and production aircraft.
Since joining together with Vector Aerospace in November 2017, however, the new StandardAero has substantially expanded its portfolio of helicopter airframe, component and turboshaft engine services, now encompassing a broad mix of airframe and engine platforms.
The SAFECRAFT Portfolio
These new technologies make up what StandardAero calls its SAFECRAFT portfolio, which includes both STC’d and currently in-development solutions that are designed based on direct feedback from customers and industry. The suite of SAFECRAFT technologies includes:
StandardAero’s comprehensive tip-to-tail capabilities for the Airbus Helicopters’ H125/AS350, AS355 and H130/EC130 family serves as the cornerstone of its recent and ongoing growth. StandardAero’s Vancouver shop has provided expert MRO service to customers operating Airbus helicopters for more than 30 years, and continues to expand its offerings with new repairs, unique capabilities and expanded coverage.
•
•
“We have over 100 repair schemes, extensive airframe and engine capabilities and, as of late last year, are now able to provide OEM-approved dynamic component repair support to Airbus operators worldwide,” said Manny Atwal, Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development for StandardAero’s Commercial Helicopter Services.
•
•
Safety at the Forefront
In addition to its prime capabilities in airframe, engine and dynamic component maintenance and repair, StandardAero has proactively placed safety at the forefront of its business as well, with the Airbus AS350 and EC130 platforms serving as a launching pad for future solutions. The company has invested ample resources into the development of new, innovative Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) solutions that are geared towards increasing occupant safety, with the recently introduced crash-resistant fuel tank at the head of the pack. In June of this year, StandardAero received European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certification for the crash-resistant fuel tank, developed in partnership with Robertson Fuel Systems. With a unique design that features a crash-resistant fuel bladder, magnetic field sensor fuel gauging technology and a recessed sump drain valve, the StandardAero AS350/EC130 fuel tank kit is the only retrofittable solution that meets the current FAR Part 27.952 fuel system crash resistance requirements. Upon receiving EASA certification, Rick Stine, President of StandardAero Components, Helicopters & Accessories commented that the Federal Aviation

Low-cost ADS-B transmitters by leading avionics manufacturers Garmin and L-3 which not only meet, but exceed pending regulatory requirements, with both In and Out functionality; Powerline detection, icing detection and collective cueing systems, developed in partnership with Safe Flight Instrument Corporation, all of which reduce pilot workload and enhance effectiveness; A high-resolution, high-contrast electronic flight instrument upgrade in partnership with Astronautics that provides greater reliability and situational awareness; The Outerlink IRIS solution for cockpit voice and video recording, and essential real-time flight data monitoring; BLR’s FastFin tail rotor enhancement and stability system, which uses advanced airflow management to increase the effectiveness of the anti-torque system; Energy attenuating seating that will provide optimum occupant protection for crew and passengers; and, A lightweight, Instrument Flight Rules (IFR)compatible autopilot solution for improved “eyes out” flying.
The format of the SAFECRAFT portfolio is designed in a manner that will allow operators to select items based on their individual aircraft configuration, mission requirements and budget. StandardAero plans for new technologies and options to be added to the portfolio in response to customer demand and future regulatory requirements. “We have developed strategic, key partnerships with a number of industry-leading companies that we believe share our commitment to safety and quality. Each of these new technologies complement our retrofittable crash-resistant fuel tank and we look forward to bringing those that are in development to market to better serve our customers and our industry as a whole,” concluded Atwal. Cranfield, Blue Bear to Create Drone Corridor
The European Helicopter Association’s position on Brexit states, “Although the Brexit withdrawal and transitional agreement negotiations are still underway, the European Helicopter Association (EHA) would like to express our support for the outcome to be in-line with the four associated countries status (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). Therefore, resulting in an EASA mandate altered to the “new EU-27 and five associated countries including the UK.”
Cranfield University and Blue Bear Systems Research have joined forces to create the UK National Beyond visual line-of-sight Experimentation Corridor (NBEC) for unmanned aerial vehicles. The corridor will stretch from Blue Bear’s headquarters in Oakley to Cranfield.
“We understand that there are still many political hurdles to be overcome, but for the rotorcraft industry to continue operating, with safety as our primary focus, a smooth Brexit with an understandable and comparable status to the current regulatory landscape will help our rotorcraft community to continue to focus on providing European communities with vital services.” It added: “The European Union’s aviation safety legislation [has seen] many changes e.g. transition from JAR-OPS to [EASA] Part OPS. So a period of regulatory stability should be considered an important factor in the Brexit negotiations, with our members now focused on areas such as regulation refinement for better understanding. We therefore re-iterate that EHA currently have a similar position to the UK CAA, to remain inside EASA and transition to a model similar to the four (current) associated countries.” www.eha-heli.eu

Heléna Holt, CEO of Devon Air Ambulance, said “We aim to replace our helicopters, on average, every 10 years. We have undertaken extensive research into what would be the best helicopter to meet our current, and future, operational needs...We feel that the H145 is perfect for our current and future needs. The H145 has much more accessible cabin space than our current EC135s and this gives us greater capacity and flexibility as we continue to enhance the service we can offer to our patients.” Devon Air Ambulance owns its current two aircraft. The new aircraft purchase will cost in the region of £8.5m, but this will be offset by the onward sale of the older helicopter, G-DVAA. Ian Payne, flight operations director for Devon Air Ambulance, added: “We are looking forward to welcoming the H145, registration G-DAAS in 2020.

JETcopter Unveils VTOL Innovation JETcopter has revealed a new propulsion system for VTOL aircraft which uses two centrifugal air turbines in enclosed housings 200 cm (6.6 feet) in diameter. The turbines counter-rotate at very high RPM to produce thrust equivalent to an 11-metre (36 ft) diameter helicopters rotor. The airflow feeds into four movable ducts. JETcopter plans to build and fly a VTOL prototype by the end of 2019. www.jetcopter.com

NBEC will assist investigations into UAV integration into controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Blue Bear and Cranfield believe the key to future drone operations is unification, not segregation, i.e. “fair and equitable use of airspace for all.” The NBEC will be operated with both Blue Bear and Cranfield running their respective systems but also providing a capability that allows other companies to come and test their UTM (Unified Traffic Management) concepts in a safe managed environment. www.bbsr.co.uk

SkyRyse has raised $25 million (€21.5 million) to help fund the development of its self-flying helicopter, which will initially be aimed at emergency services. The California-based company says this will enable it to deploy its technology for the first time next year using Robinson R44s. Its advanced pilot assistance system (APAS) uses artificial intelligence to reduce pilot workload and minimize the chances of human error in rotorcraft and other VTOL aircraft. https://skyryse.com
EASA to Reinforce New GA Vision EASA’s Annual Safety Conference (6-8 November 2018 in Vienna, Austria) will be themed ‘A Vision for the Future of General Aviation.’ The Agency said “safer, simpler and more affordable flying [will introduce] a new era of innovation and sharing of airspace and flights.” André Borschberg, world record holder for the highest solar-powered flights as well as the longest solo flight in an airplane of any kind, will attend as a keynote speaker and panelist. European GA aircraft manufacturers (including hybrid and solar-powered and air taxis/UAVs) will take part, along with cost-sharing platforms. “In 2014 the Rome Conference on GA marked the onset of improved cooperation with the GA community. The Rome Conference led to an engaging GA strategy and greatly improved cooperation and communication between EASA and the European GA community,” said EASA. “After considerable progress to strengthen GA, such as simpler and lighter rules for declared training organisations, balloon operations, introduction of standard changes and repairs and the re-written CS-23 rules, the 2018 Annual Safety Conference will look towards the future of GA. The new European GA strategy is taking off with the recently adopted update of the Basic Regulation, which provides additional flexibility for regulating GA. https://www.easa.europa.eu

Hybrid Touch
Unlike any other GPS navigator on the market, the IFD series was designed with real world flying conditions in mind. The IFDs are touch-screen, yet still have knobs and buttons for all functions to give the pilot the choice for reliable operation with minimum heads down time in rough conditions. There is no compromise with the IFD series – touch-screen when you want it, buttons when you need them.
Remote COM Channel Selection & Frequency Transfer
Helicopter operators will appreciate the IFDs ability to remotely select up to 16 pre-programmed COM channels via an optional cyclicmounted switch which increments through each COM channel number and frequency for display in the standby COM window. A remote frequency transfer input makes it just as easy to switch the selected channel/frequency into the active window when needed.

KT74 ADS-B Solution from BendixKing
Past to Present: BendixKing is Committed to Helping Operators Among a variety of recent product developments, BendixKing is sending clear signals to operators of helicopters that it aims to support their needs, improving the safety and efficiency of their operations into the future… KRA 405B Radar Altimeter BendixKing has been part of the helicopter market for years and will continue to be for many to come, as demonstrated by its KRA 405B radar altimeter. The KRA 405 has been relied on by operators for more than 25 years but its predecessor takes reliability to a new level. Among the improvements, the KRA 405B is 50% lighter, has a 70% reduction in primary circuit boards, and offers more power than its predecessor. Whether operators are doing Level 1 landings or search and rescue, the KRA 405B provides timetested reliability. KT 74 ADS-B Solution Meanwhile, global mandates for ADS-B will soon be realized and will play a vital role for controllers managing the growing number of aircraft in today’s worldwide fleet. The KT 74 supports the ADS-B Out 1090 ES (Extended Squitter), which is the standard for ADS-B around the world, and it’s certified for Part 27 helicopters. The KT 74 is also a plug and play slide-in replacement for the popular BendixKing KT 76A/C and KT 78 Transponders.
Weather Radar Pod
Weather Radar Pod Across the board, BendixKing continues to innovate, creating new equipment to help helicopter operators increase the safety and efficiency of their operations. In 2017, the company partnered with Avionics Services out of Brazil to develop the first ever weather radar pod for the AS 350 helicopter. The system uses a BendixKing RDR 2000/2060 which is fully stabilized to +/- 30° combined pitch and roll, while antenna stabilization keeps your screen clear of ground returns during moderate Helicopter maneuvers. Pilots can analyze storm segments vertically, giving them the information needed to determine the intensity of the storm. The radar can also be used to look at the angle of the cell's leading edge to determine direction of movement. To effectively display this radar information the BendixKing KSN 770/765 has passed vibration testing for installation on helicopters. More information from www.bendixking.com

Mark Clancy Edit Oct18.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 10/09/2018 09:36 Page 1
Ten Tips for Buying Your Ideal Private Helicopter
Private buyers seeking to purchase a used turbine helicopter can
find it challenge to select the right one notes Mark V. Clancy. Following are his top tips for landing the ideal private rotorcraft for you…
Initial visions for helicopter ownership may include room for a pilot, family, luggage for a big trip and perhaps a dog. High-value decisions and long-term commitments like these can be daunting and require more than just scanning the internet and going it alone in the hope of acquiring the best helicopter available. If you’ve never purchased a helicopter before there’s much to understand. If you currently own one and are seeking to upgrade, you may be facing some similar challenges. The following tips help ensure you get the value you want from a helicopter you plan to purchase.
1. Does a single- or twin-engine helicopter meet your interest, needs and budget?
Determine which helicopter makes/models offer the cabin size, performance and weather capabilities that best meet your interests and needs. A range of attractively-priced used Airbus, Bell, Leonardo and MD single-engine turbine helicopters (€350,000-€2,000,000) are available (new models cost between €3,000,000-€4,000,000) and may prove attractive to private buyers interested in flying under Visual-Flight Rules (VFR), and with their families, friends and business associates. Airbus, Bell, Leonardo and Sikorsky twin-engine helicopters offer extra cabin seating, are faster, carry more cargo, and can fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) or in adverse metrological conditions, but they require a seasoned IFR-capable pilot, maintenance service center support, and a budget substantially greater than for single-engine turbine helicopters. There are a variety of late-model and legacy corporate-configured twin-engine helicopter models available at lower prices (€350,000-€3,500,000) than new models (€5,000,000-€10,000,000) that may require varying degrees of refurbishment, Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) and avionics updates (usually between €100,000-€1,500,000). You could also consider reconfiguring available utility, offshore or law enforcement and commercial helicopters for private use, likely requiring similar MRO, refurbishment, reconfiguration and avionics updates. Though it may be a challenge to envision converting a former commercial helicopter into a private/corporate role, great deals are often available on late-model and legacy commercial helicopters. Once complete, the helicopter will enter its ‘second life’ custom-configured, ready to provide years of comfortable, safe and reliable service. You may want to create a helicopter capability, performance, maintenance, reconfiguration update and cost-benefit analysis matrix. This will take some effort and we recommend you obtain the help of an experienced helicopter sales agent and service center to help you weigh the advantages and disadvantages before deciding on the right helicopter.
2. Model Year, Total Time, Optional Equipment, Maintenance Status, History, Condition and Asking Price matter…
Once you’ve selected your ideal make and model, you can begin your search of available helicopters ‘For Sale’. They’ll be advertised in various industry digital and print publications and aircraft sales websites by owners, exclusive and non-exclusive brokers,
18 HELICOPTER BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2018
agents or dealers, and at domestic and international helicopter trade shows. Keep in mind that some sellers are more informed than others, and none represent the buyers’ interests. Gather initial helicopter specifications including a list of installed optional equipment, maintenance status summary and photos, and inquire if a prospective helicopter is actively being flown or run. You should also determine if there has been any damage history and, if so, who performed the repair and returned the aircraft to service. What airframe and engine service centers provide the maintenance support? How long has the helicopter been ‘For Sale’, and has the asking price changed since it was placed on the market. This information will help narrow the field of prospective helicopters.
3. Understand equitable comparisons
Too often we see private buyers “price shopping” for helicopters as though they are commodities, seemingly unaware of how to make equitable comparisons. The devil of helicopter value is in the component detail. Buyers are advised to develop an analytical comparison process to assess the major component values. Buyers should request the full maintenance tracking report from sellers. Substantial value may be excluded from your consideration if you only utilize the summary. Create a spreadsheet of line-items of retirement, overhaul and calendar components, and major inspections for the airframe and engine(s). This process is involved, and your helicopter agent and service center will help you understand the current values and costs. There are also direct maintenance cost software programs available to assist in developing your analytical process. In addition, future component costs can be projected in your spreadsheet analysis, based on anticipated hourly/annual utilization.
4. Hire the right helicopter maintenance service center mechanic or engineer Selecting the right helicopter maintenance service center or mechanic/engineer is one of the most important aspects of purchasing a helicopter. A trusted service center mechanic experienced in maintaining the particular make/model helicopter you intend to purchase will assist you in identifying minor and substantial issues during a pre-purchase inspection, provide estimates for any MRO, refurbishment, reconfiguration and avionics updates, and ensure continuous helicopter airworthiness on your behalf. Create an itemized budget for these categories and consider how an anticipated workscope schedule coordinates with the commencement of your flight operations.
5. Domestic and international acquisitions differ
Helicopters purchased domestically or regionally within one airworthiness authority, are less complicated and easier to relocate, but do not always provide the best acquisition opportunity. Sometimes, the most favorable helicopter acquisition is located oceans away, where governmental airworthiness authority bi-lateral agreements may not exist, but where installed optional equipment may not have Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs), thus requiring removal prior to obtaining airworthiness approval in your country.
Mark Clancy Edit Oct18.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 10/09/2018 09:37 Page 2
Mark V. Clancy is an aerospace engineer and the founder of HelicopterBuyer, Inc., a Minneapolis, Minnesota–based full-service helicopter buyer and seller agent services business with 32 years’ experience and extensive expertise with helicopter and engine sales, valuations, MRO, reconfiguration, and operator support. Contact him at +1-763-753-3700 or via e-mail at mark@helicopterbuyer.com. He welcomes your comments, suggestions, or perspectives.
If you will be shipping the helicopter, obtain a quote from the seller’s service center to properly dismantle and prepare the helicopter for land/sea or air freight shipment. You will also need an experienced international freight-forwarder with good knowledge of the export/import process, and a load master to ensure proper loading and unloading of your helicopter. Helicopter ferry flights can cost €800 per day, plus expenses. Helicopter service center shipping preparations can cost €5,000-€10,000, and freight shipping charges typically range from €25,000-€100,000 depending on the helicopter, location, shipping method, distances and other circumstances. (Note that most aircraft insurance policies do not cover ground/sea/air freight shipping, so be sure to include this with your helicopter shipping.)
9. Take advantage of the ‘professional agent difference’
These hurdles and challenges can be worth the effort, but you may need some assistance. Your service center should be able to help. You may also need to locate an independent designated airworthiness representative able to guide you and perform an acceptable aircraft inspection and issue a civilstandard airworthiness certificate, prior to the helicopter being exported or following import to your home country.
6. Make sure you buy the helicopter correctly
Once you have collected data on all available helicopters of interest; completed your analytical assessment of installed equipment; determined current component values and projected component costs; estimated any anticipated MRO, reconfiguration, refurbishment and relocation expenses; made helicopter valuation assessments and comparisons; and decided on the most interesting helicopter, you’re ready to commence owner or owner-agent negotiations. The more informed and prepared you are, the more likely you’ll be able to negotiate a favorable price. The next step is drafting the Helicopter Purchase Agreement (HPA) which can be complicated without a helicopter sales agent or broker and/or an aviation attorney to guide you as they are generally written by sellers. HPAs typically range between 8-50 pages, cover a wide range of terms and conditions, and can be one of the most challenging aspects of buying a helicopter. Once a mutually-acceptable HPA is approved you are on your way to the helicopter inspection.
In an increasingly changeable market, and to assist you in selecting the right helicopter, assemble a team of support professionals to help navigate the process. You may wish to engage the services of an experienced helicopter sales agent committed solely to representing your acquisition interests. The right professional helicopter buyer agent has: In-depth knowledge of the various helicopter markets; unique knowledge of the makes and models being purchased; maintains fleet data, aircraft ‘For Sale’ and historical sales databases; is able to identify on- and off-market helicopters ‘For Sale’; performs detailed valuations; can offer recent sales insight; prepares buyer-oriented HPAs; is experienced with international transactions; and offers extensive experience for the clients’ exclusive benefit. Helicopter buyer agents work similarly to seller agents, but exclusively represent the buyer’s interests, saving clients a multiple of their earned commission ensuring their clients buy wisely, and update and customize their helicopter seamlessly. They provide a trusted team of support professionals that will guide the buyer during their term of ownership.
10. Enjoy the buying process
Buyers love to buy but hate to be sold to. Buying your own private helicopter correctly is especially important. High-value assets like helicopters can be a challenge and complicated to acquire, especially internationally. By identifying all helicopters available on the market, implementing an analytical comparative assessment and cost projection process, and by securing a trusted support team you are certain to identify, acquire and begin enjoying the best value helicopter anywhere as expeditiously and smoothly as possible. More information from www.helicopterbuyer.com
7. Be thorough with the Pre-Purchase Inspection
Typically, once a written agreement is reached with a seller and a refundable escrow deposit is placed in escrow, a helicopter Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) is performed with your experienced mechanic and helicopter sales agent at the seller’s location. A PPI typically requires one to two days depending if the helicopter is a single or twinengine model and on its age (older helicopters have more data to review). One day is typically spent reviewing and assessing the log books, records and documents and the second day is generally required to perform a physical aircraft inspection and flight test. You may also want to perform an engine borescope inspection and may need to hire an engine service center with the correct equipment and training to complete the engine inspection correctly, determining if there are any issues that must be addressed. A flight test is performed with the seller’s pilot to verify helicopter functionality and engine performance as they need to meet OEM maintenance manual criteria. Upon conclusion of the PPI, there could be major or minor airworthiness issues that need addressing. Your service center mechanic will identify the important issues to be resolved by either you or the seller.
8. Relocate the helicopter using professional ferry flight pilot/freight forwarders
Once you have completed the helicopter inspection and acceptance, it’s time to decide on how to relocate the helicopter to your facility or service center. If you will be flying the helicopter over a substantial distance, you should consider engaging a professional ferry flight pilot experienced in international air operations.

UV Eye OCT`18.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 07/09/2018 11:47 Page 1
Do 100% UV Protection Glasses Really Protect Eyes in the Cockpit?
Just because helicopter pilots and passengers use 100% UV protection sunglasses does not mean their eyes are fully protected from the impact of light energy. It’s vital for those flying rotorcraft to better protect their eyes to prevent eye diseases from forming... Helicopter windshields are bigger than those in other aircraft meaning more light passes through, placing additional light stress upon the eyes which need to neutralize that light during flight operations. Of course, when we think of UV rays there is visible light and infrared hazard rays. The main problem is that people are not informed enough that blue light and infrared light can damage our eyes, too. Today, the commonly held myth is that 100% UV protection provides adequate protection, but while the front part of the eye (the cornea and crystal lens) may be covered, the rear part of the eye (the irreplaceable macular and retina) remain unprotected from the impact of hazardous blue light rays.
Short-Term Investment Saves High Cost Long-Term
As much as 80% of our daily use of the five senses relates to the eyes. So why wouldn’t we seek to invest in their adequate protection? Light is energy, including the UV, visible rays of blue light and the invisible infrared light.
While the impact of light for a small period is low (it could be likened to a water drop), the cumulative impact over many years is substantial (imagine the accumulated impact of 50 years’ worth of waterdrops). Though the impact on the lens can be measured at any time by an ophthalmologist, it is impossible to gauge the impact on the macular and retina over time. While science and medicine are doing a great job in extending life expectancy, living longer opens up a whole new spectrum of eye-related deficiencies including Cataract, Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) or Retinal Detachment. It’s important to act now to lessen the impact of such diseases developing later. Relatively speaking, investing in adequate eye protection now would prove a small investment compared to the £1,000 cost of Cataract surgery or several injections against ARMD later in life (people usually require 3-4 injections per year). The adequate protection for helicopter pilots and passengers would be sunglasses protecting against UV, blue light and infrared, such as CARUSO Pilot sunglasses.

It is expected to come into effect in late 2019 or early 2020, making flight in IFR more accessible for GA pilots in a similar way the UK IMC/IR(R) rating provides an extended operating envelope/safety margin for UK pilots with the add-on qualification to their PPLs. The BIR will differ from the IR(R) in allowing flying on airways, and will be available in all EASA states. Its theoretical knowledge requirements will be less onerous then that Competency-Based IR (CB-IR) which itself was introduced in 2014. www.easa.europa.eu

The CAA now has what it calls its Airspace Modernisation Strategy, working closely with NATS on “integration rather than segregation” so that the utility of airspace is maximized for all user groups from gliders to business jets and scheduled airliners. The consultation on the shape AMS will take, termed a “stakeholder engagement exercise,” ended on 10 September and the AMS is due to be published by the UK government by the end of 2018. Airspace4All meanwhile plans to run a GA Airfield ADS-B Traffic Display Trial to assess the future use of ADS-B real-time traffic displays by GA ATS units. Three UK GA airfields will be equipped: Barton (Manchester), Goodwood (Chichester) and Gloucester. A number of GA aircraft based at the trial airfields will be equipped with ADS-B Out devices. On 15th May 2018 EASA published a report presenting the data and analysis of an investigation it carried out this year to understand the current status of the deployment of ADS-B and other means of surveillance. Aircraft Guaranty EDIT Oct18.qxp_TURBINE NEWS AUG 16 07/09/2018 10:26 Page 1
SPONSORED CONTENT
Aircraft Trusts: What is the Know Your Customer Law?
Aircraft Guaranty Corp offers insights into Know Your Customer
laws within the United States. What is it, how thorough it is, and why is it so important to vet potential aircraft trust customers?
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the term used by businesses in which they verify the identity of prospective customers to determine if the client is someone with whom they should be doing business. KYC laws were introduced as part of the Patriot Act in the United States that was passed after the terrorist atrocities of September 11, 2001. Title III of the Patriot Act requires that financial institutions deliver two requirements to comply with KYC: The Customer Identification Program (CIP) and Customer Due Diligence (CDD). What are the KYC requirements for aircraft trust companies, though? As aircraft trustees, we develop long-term close relationships with the owners for whom we hold trusts, and it is our responsibility to know that our client is eligible and worthy of aircraft ownership.
The Customer Identification Program
Customer Identification Programs (CIP) are a component of the KYC process. Financial institutions are held to the highest CIP standards, and they must implement a program that is appropriate to their size, location and type of business. The CIP must be in writing and approved by the board of directors. Aircraft Guaranty Corporation uses the guidelines created for financial institutions to develop a process that is appropriate for our business. The CIP we use accurately identifies individuals who want to do business with us. Identification is the first step in the due diligence process. Once you know who you are doing business with, you can determine if there are any factors about the individual or entity that require additional information gathering or other action. The following information is gathered for potential corporate customers. Although there are a few software choices, Aircraft Guaranty uses Watchdog to run searches and provide reports including: • • • •
•
Identity of company – name, industry Location - physical address Identity of key personnel and principals Any negative information found in: o The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) at the US Treasury Department o The System for Award Management (SAM) US Federal Government databse of entities that file to do business with the US Government International company profiles from the US Embassy
32 PISTON BUYER EUROPE OCTOBER 2018
We learn about corporate representatives or individual buyers not associated with a corporation by reviewing the following information: • • • •
Name, address, telephone numbers Country – check for Embargo List of countries (sales prohibited) and sanctioned countries Official identification cards of signees, such as a passport and driver’s license News database search (run a Google search)
Customer Due Diligence and Enhanced Due Diligence
Customer Due Diligence (CDD) refers to the risk management steps taken to comply with KYC. The process uses the CIP information to assess your potential customer’s risk profile. Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) is required if the customer is considered high risk. People requiring EDD include: • • •
Politically exposed persons Accounts that deal with high-risk countries Accounts that deal with high risk activities
Aircraft Guaranty Corporation conducts CDD before we consider beginning any business relationship. It’s also prudent to do periodic checks to see if customers move into higher risk categories. We keep all KYC records and reports on hand in digital format.
Third Party Vetting Solutions
How can you be sure your potential customer is NOT involved in nefarious activities? Third party solutions are helpful, but the responsibility is on the trust company. Shell to Restart UL Avgas Testing
The UK All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for General Aviation ended the Parliamentary year by heading to the US to find out more about GA there, and learn lessons to help improve the situation with UK GA.
The testing of unleaded avgas is to start again under a joint initiative between the FAA and industry.
“A cross-party group of MPs successfully completed a visit to Washington, D.C. to discuss the General Aviation sector with US aviation bodies,” said APPG. The group also visited EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin “to learn more about the thriving grassroots sector and how it compares to the UK.”
The Piston Aviation Fuels Initiative (PAFI) will restart towards the end of 2018 with Shell taking part but not Swift Fuels, which has pulled out to focus on developing its own unleaded avgas. PAFI was suspended by the FAA last year but is now due to see testing completed by the end of 2019, the aim being to compare PAFI fuels with 100LL. www.shell.com
Insure-as-you-Fly Policy Launched for GA Tokio Marine Kiln (TMK) and insuretech launched a new insurance policy called FlyCovered in early September.
The delegation was led by Grant Shapps MP, second right.
The MPs met with two of their US counterparts from the Congressional General Aviation Caucus, Rep. Sam Graves and Rep. Marc Veasey, and with organisations such as the FAA, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), National Air Transportation Association (NATA) and Helicopter Association International (HAI). After Oshkosh the parliamentarians headed to Frederick, Maryland to meet with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). www.generalaviationappg.uk
The on-demand coverage offers fully comprehensive damage protection for the aircraft and the pilot’s liability, but only cover for flying when you actually fly. Three policies have been developed: Ground Cover+; On Demand; and Frequent Flyer, which is a “traditional comprehensive annual aviation insurance.” According to TMK: “While customers have been able to purchase on demand home, travel and car insurance, aircraft owners have been unable to benefit until now. Thousands of pilots purchase annual flight coverage, but many are flying less than 20 hours a year, or need to cancel trips due to other commitments or weather.” www.flycovered.com

Becker Avionics has over 60 years’ experience providing Communication, Navigation, Surveillance and Search and Rescue equipment for airborne and ground applications. Customers include Law enforcement, border protection, coastal surveillance, tactical transport, medical evacuation, search and rescue; there are so many duties Becker Avionics’ mission systems fulfil, often in harsh environments and with round-theclock availability.. Irrespective of the utilization, Becker Avionics’ mission systems all have one thing in common. Their operators need them to perform safely and efficiently, at all times, and without surprises. Rising to the challenge, Becker Avionics offers an array of highly configurable solutions designed to allow operators to focus fully on the mission.
Communication
Radio failure in flight is not an option. Becker’s highly robust radios, with superior quality and performance in a compact design, are built for both fixed-wing and rotary-wing applications. Complying with the 8.33 kHz channel spacing mandate, these offer more integrated functions, less weight, with no forced cooling and can be controlled through dedicated control units, integrated radio tuning units or Flight Management Systems (FMS).
or panel mount versions, the radios can be coupled with dedicated control units or integrated tuning units. Interfaces to glass cockpit installations can also be supported.
Surveillance
The operational profiles of today’s aviation platforms demand tailored ADS-B solutions. Designed for both fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft, Becker’s NextGen Mode-S transponders will allow operators to fly in regulated airspaces, with specific integrated functions, and to easily manage their system via dedicated control units, integrated radio tuning units or Flight Management Systems (FMS).
Intercom
Whether for fixed-wing or rotary applications, configurations for different operational profiles are rarely the same. Becker’s modern digital audio systems deliver crystalclear voice communication quality and a proven Man-MachineInterface (MMI). They are also fully-configurable thanks to their software platform and offer seamless interoperability with a variety of wireless intercom systems on the market. COST-EFFECTIVE AVIONICS UPGRADES The G5 electronic flight instrument delivers exceptional performance, reliability and ease of installation as a drop-in replacement for primary attitude and/or directional gyros in type-certificated fixed-wing aircraft. Following, Garmin shares more on its innovative product… Designed for installation in FAR Part 23 Class 1 and Class 2 aircraft (singles and twins weighing less than 6,000lbs), the 3.5” G5 display fits into a standard 3-1/8” round cutout, taking up just a fraction of the space and weight previously required by conventional gyro-based instruments. It’s valid for flight under VFR and IFR conditions. And, by combining visual cues and data readouts once scattered across a myriad of instruments, G5 makes flight information easier to scan so pilots can respond more quickly and intuitively to any inflight situation. When configured as an attitude indicator, G5 uses solid-state AHRS reference to provide smooth, steady and reliable horizon-based pitch and roll indications. In addition to aircraft attitude, G5 will also support display of airspeed, altitude, vertical speed, slip/skid, turn rate, configurable V-speed references, barometric setting and selected altitude — as well as visual alerts upon arriving at a preselected altitude. To provide even more situational awareness, G5 is also approved for installation as a replacement heading indicator/directional gyro (HI or DG) or horizontal situation indicator (HSI). When paired with an affordable GMU 11 magnetometer, GAD 29 navigation data interface and select VHF Nav/Comms or GPS navigators, G5 can serve as a primary reference source for magnetic heading, VOR/LOC guidance and/or GPS course guidance, as well as providing distance and groundspeed indications. Providing an economical upgrade path via a comprehensive approved model list (AML) that contains over 600 aircraft, the compact and
cost-effective G5 is bringing modern “glass cockpit” reference to thousands of aircraft that would otherwise depend on older, vacuumdriven equipment.
GMA 345 Bringing rich “home theatre” quality sound and wireless Bluetooth audio connectivity to the cockpit, the GMA 345 digital audio panel offers a superior inflight audio experience at an affordable price. Featuring 3D spatial sound processing, a USB charging port, marker beacon receiver, advanced Auto Squelch, clearance playback and impressive audio mixing and distribution features, this all-digital unit offers the ideal blend of capabilities for pilots who want to hear and do more with less effort in the cockpit. Plus, it’s an easy slide-in upgrade from select thirdparty audio panels or legacy GMA 340 units.
To help prevent incidents caused by loss of control, the FAA and other regulators encourage the use of key technologies, such as angle-ofattack indicators and autopilots, to help increase situational awareness, reduce pilot workload and enhance safety of flight. GFC 500 is the right product — at the right price — for certified light GA aircraft. Boasting a superior feature set, GFC 500 incorporates a number of safety-enhancing technologies, including Garmin ESP, under-speed and overspeed protection, automatic LVL mode, vertical navigation (VNAV) mode, flight director (FD) command cues and more. Rather than depending on failure-prone mechanical gyros, the GFC 500 system is digitally controlled, using solid-state attitude and air data sensor reference — providing ultra-smooth round-outs, intercepts and more while also enhancing the reliability of the system.
GNC 255 As compact as it is capable, the GNC 255 can bring powerful Nav/Comm capabilities to virtually any cockpit. Not only does the GNC 255 meet the basic needs of most pilots – including adhering to new airspace requirements in Europe – it also features a number of advanced features that save significant time and effort. Additionally, it contains an internal VOR/LOC converter and 40-channel glideslope receiver.
GFC 500 Autopilot The revolutionary GFC 500 autopilot brings unprecedented levels of capability, reliability and affordability to light single-engine, fixed-wing General Aviation aircraft. GFC 500 leverages Garmin’s advanced attitude-based flight control technology developed for the popular GFC 700 autopilot, which drives Garmin’s most advanced glass flight deck systems.
Incorporating Garmin’s crisp, easy-to-read 3.5” G5 electronic flight instrument, a mode controller and “smart” servos, the autopilot’s architecture supports full pitch-and-roll axis control capabilities with optional pitch trim for automatic and manual electric trim. Additionally, yaw damper capability is optionally available for select aircraft models. With the optional GAD 29 nav data adapter, GFC 500 will interface with the GTN 650/750 and legacy GNS 430/530 (WAAS and non-WAAS) series navigators to fly a wide range of precision, non-precision and GPS-guided approaches, as well as holds, procedure turns, missed approaches and more. GFC 500 also includes built-in GPS roll steering capability, which allows smoother navigation tracking and eliminates the need for external roll steering converters.

A surge in charter flights fueled in part by activity linked to the FIFA World Cup in Russia saw business aviation activity in Europe surpassing 94,000 departures in July, a new record (2.8 percent more than the previous top month, June 2008). Charter flights represented almost 60 percent of the activity. WingX said movements of turboprops and piston-powered aircraft were 32,000. The World Cup in Russia between 14 June and 15 July saw flights between the country’s airports and the rest of Europe climb by 26 percent year-on-year, to 2,040. WingX noted that activity between the UK and Russia doubled during the period. France was still the busiest country for business aviation flights. WingX said the growth in movement numbers also reflects the expanding inventory of business aircraft in Europe and an “ efficient supply side, such as air taxi operators and online broker channels.” It sees a downside, however, in that the market at present is driven mostly by leisure travelers, a segment that is vulnerable to an economic shock. www.wingx.com

Redmond, Oregon-based Stratos Aircraft’s 714 has now been renamed Stratos 716, with a larger cabin that the original design following customer feedback. The company displayed an eighth-scale model at Oshkosh. “People told us that the current design is too small to comfortably seat six passengers and crew, plus baggage,” said chief technical officer, Carsten Sundin. “We have lengthened the cabin by 31in [77.5cm], and added 3.5in to the width to give owners and operators that extra space.” The first 716s will be kits branded 716X as the company refines the design for FAR Part 23 type certification, which requires considerable investment. The company expects to deliver the first 716X kit in mid-2019. The 716 is powered by a 2,900lb thrust Pratt & Whitney Canada JT15D-5 engine but the certificated variant will be powered by a 3,400lb-thrust PW535. The Stratos demonstrator first flew in November 2016. It represents competition for Cirrus’s Vision Jet as well as Embraer’s Phenom 100EV (twin jet) and Daher’s TBM 910/930 (single-engined turboprops). www.stratosaircraft.com
Nextant Gets Gogo STC for Phenom 300
London Biggin Hill Airport and WingX say they have stepped up their partnership by utilising the market intelligence company’s recently launched Airport Dashboard.
Nextant Aerospace, provider of the 400XTi and G90XT remanufactured aircraft and Challenger 604XT Fusion upgrade, has received a new STC for installation of Gogo Avance L5 on Embraer Phenom 300s.
Andy Patsalides, marketing manager at LBHA, said: “The WingX Dashboard upgrades this capability by giving us an interactive portal to the fleet disposition and activity of all our current and prospective customers…Last month, we saw from WingX that while the overall trend in market growth is around three percent, London Biggin Hill is seeing more than 15 percent growth, with more than 39 percent YOY in large business jet activity.” This is due in part to the airport’s recently-extended operating hours, he added. www.wingx-advance.com
The Gogo Avance L5 technology solution features 4G inflight internet, an advanced smart router for integrated and automated cabin experience, and improved Wi-Fi performance that includes streaming audio and video content, moving maps, and flight information. The Gogo Avance L5 air-toground system either replaces an existing ATG system on an aircraft or would be a new system installed after delivery from the factory. It operates over the Gogo Biz 4G network and features seamless coverage in the United States and parts of Canada. www.nextantaerospace.com

EASA Praises Bizav Safety
The one-day recurrent training program is sufficient to refresh knowledge and skills of pilots who previously attended its multi-day integrated academic, on-aircraft, and simulator UPRT courses. APS also has a European training base at Seppe Airport in Holland. APS says the recurrent training program is a concentrated day of on-aircraft UPRT that “reinvigorates initial training competencies and updates skills to the industry’s most recent advancements.” Pilots and flight departments can also take a half-day course in high altitude jet upset and stall training, dedicated instrument recovery sessions, simulator UPRT in multi-engine turboprop, turbojet/turbofan, and transport-category aircraft, or customerselectable stall/spin recovery sessions. APS president Paul B.J. Ransbury said: “The addition of high altitude swept-wing jet upset training to the APS menu of recurrent training services ensures our graduates have a variety of training options throughout their career that match their daily flight operations.” www.apstraining.com

Southend Airport Installs AGATS London Southend Airport has installed Aviation Grade Artificial Turf (AGAT) during an overnight operation aimed at remediating jet blast erosion on the end of Runway 05. The work was carried out by Denmark’s Evergreen Aviation in collaboration with a local contractor JKS Group, which laid the sub-base. “Our advisors at Burroughs recommended the AGAT solution to restore and future proof the jet blast area, said the airport’s head of asset management, Marc Taylor. Evergreen Aviation’s special projects liaison Mads Lauritzen led the installation team: “By using AGAT, we can help these issues and provide solutions that are cost beneficial, safe, and long lasting, he said. “In this case, we installed from the end of runway pavement across the main jet blast area and above the approach-bar concrete foundations, preventing foreign object damage (FOD) from eroding natural soil and minimising hazards when cutting grass around the approach lights. “We have seen great success with previous AGAT installations on both military bases and commercial airports around the world and we are delighted to now bring this innovative technology to London Southend Airport, added Lauritzen, who later told GA Buyer the company had received approval for its first commercial AGAT Helipad and TWY, at Roedvig Heliport, Denmark, from the Danish Civil Aviation Authorities. www.evergreenaviation.dk
The upgrade, currently in flight testing, will see an updated Garmin 5000 avionics suite to reduce pilot workload “including climb, cruise and descent vertical navigation, enhanced take-off and landing performance calculations and much more. www.bombardier.com

Garmin has acquired flight planning company FltPlan, which sees more than 6.3 million flight plans created every year on its platform–which has 165,000 registered users for its website and FltPlan Go app. The company also offers a suite of services ranging from scheduling and trip coordination to post-flight reporting, such as the FltLogic flight scheduling program and FltPlan Manager integrated fleet management tool. A flight-plan transfer capability is available with Flight Stream 510 and Flight Stream 210–equipped aircraft, using Garmin 650/750 and 430/530W avionics. Flight plans created on the FltPlan website can be transferred to the Garmin Pilot app. www.garmin.com
Flarm Technology and uAvionix are to jointly develop solutions for electronic conspicuity for GA (manned and unmanned aircraft). The ‘detect and avoid’ solutions will combine ADS-B, transponder technology and GPS position source information, and displays. Flarm’s Open eID standard is the subject of a trial in Europe while uAvionix’s DroneAware system is being tested by NASA and UAV manufacturers. Christian Ramsey, president of uAvionixm, said “As the airspace becomes more and more crowded, it is increasingly important to integrate existing electronic conspicuity solutions into interoperable platforms. ADS-B and Flarm are the two dominating GNSS-based solutions in use today.” According to Daniel Hoffmann, general manager of Flarm Technology, “Combining detect and avoid and remote ID solutions for both manned and unmanned traffic will enable the safe and efficient integration of all traffic in the same airspace and keep the responsibility where it should be: with the pilot.” www.uavionix.com
McFarlane Wins More PMA Approvals McFarlane Aviation Products says it is “quickly becoming the leading supplier of FAA-PMA and STC aftermarket parts for Cessna 208/208B Caravans.” According to company president Dave McFarlane, “We are working with the owners and operators to improve the quality of parts and lower their cost of repairs.” Recent FAA-PMA approvals include flight control cables, spoiler hinges with select fit pins, and flap tracks. Improvements have been made to the conduit and end terminals utilised on the trim actuator cable assemblies – improvements which “make these the superior products offered for these aircraft,” said the company, and with “significant savings over factory OEM parts.” McFarlane also stocks and distributes parts for other PMA manufacturers, e.g. Airforms nose gear torque links for the 208/208B Caravan. www.mcfarlaneaviation.com
McFarlane Brings Out New Window Cleaner McFarlane Aviation Products has released DAM Window Cleaner after more than a year of development and testing. The company said DAM “is a fast, streakfree liquid spray designed for acrylic and other surfaces. It does not contain ammonia or alcohol that are harmful to plastic. It has an amazing melt away cleaning power.” The carnauba wax and polymer formula fills minor scratches and leaves a slick static free surface that makes cleaning bugs easier next time. DAM window cleaner is packaged in trigger spray bottles, not altitude sensitive aerosol cans. “Dave A. McFarlane worked diligently to develop his own DAM Window Cleaner that outperforms the competition,” said the company. “We launched this product at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh this year,” stated McFarlane, president of the US company. www.mcfarlaneaviation.com
