The sleek looking Sluka with the type designation LK-2H “grandfathers” back to the genuine Letov Sluka LK-2 Type Certificate, which was issued in the early 1990s. After a major make-over allowing a comprehensive all-complete aircraft kit the TC was updated in 1994. No less than 50 of these aircraft have been delivered as factory built or kit. • Introduction of new technologies and new ways of doing things so that it is affordable and much simpler yet safer to home built this great aircraft. • Update the shape to address improvements in looks and performance. • Design a new propulsion unit to replace the not available anymore Rotax 447 engine for existing Sluka planes. We left the core design pretty much unchanged to keep the well-known reliability and safety of the Sluka. We had also in mind that for the new Sluka friend the community of the present Sluka enthusiasts would be a great resource of experience by maintaining utmost commonality between the former models and the LK-2H. Due to the great commonality natural spin-offs are modification kits compatible with the LK-2 and

LK-2M. We offer updates for the wing, new covers, the great performing composite wing tips, the sharp tail feathers from composite sandwich, a mount system for the custom packed Galaxy Parachute only to mention a few. Many details further improve usability and comfort for the pilot of the LK-2H, such as removable 30 litre fuel tank, better pilot seating position with adjustable pedals, new differential breaking system among those. The open cockpit provides the ultimate flying experience and contact to nature. The folding wing mechanism allows you to easily slim the footprint of your Sluka appropriate for road transportation on our dedicated trailer and for space efficient parking. The age of E-flight ONE OF THE BEST TIMES in aeronautical history?

The first electric driven air vehicles had been Zeppelins and flew more than 100 years ago. But a little more than just 10 years ago the history started new and now you find e-flight and electric aviation everywhere. Companies from Siemens up to Airbus look at this field. And they look at small aircraft to realize concepts to the ultralight and LSA class because nowhere else you can realize new concepts quicker than here. Now may be the best time for aircraft designers ever since the jet age. Taking the advantages of smaller, faster and cheaper computer chips and sensors, cheaper and more powerful batteries and motors, autonomous software from smart phones, consumer drones, and automobile industries, electric aircraft and new concepts for electric vertical flight are mushrooming. This eVTOL concept became a hot topic when Uber released its white paper on an on-demand eVTOL urban mobility called “Elevate” last October, and became viral after the Elevate Summit conference in Dallas, USA this April. When anything draws the attention of Silicon Valley, it is on the fast track. Silicon Valley has the passion, determination, capital(lots of), and the desire to succed. Kitty Hawk Flyer, the company financed by Google founder Larry Page, has announced they are accepting deposits for this single seat Vertical take off manned Multicopter in the Part 103 Ultralight class which will be in the market by the end of 2017. Elon Musk has mentioned the supersonic (that’s correct) eVTOL aircraft at a dozen occasions. Even Airbus set up its eVTOL branch at Silicon Valley. The Elevate Summit is a gathering of who’s who in the aerospace community. Almost all the names you have heard of or are about to hear of in the industry showed up. Uber ended up forming partnerships with five aircraft manufacturers to design, build and test eVTOL prototypes by 2020. Volocopter, the two seat electric multirotor eVTOL, has obtained the ultralight type certificate in Germany. Dubai has partnered with Volocopter to test fly their X2 multirotor in the Dubai city by the end of year. Dallas, US is also eager to try out the urban aerial mobility concept. Tilt wings, tilt rotors, multirotor, multi electric ducted fans (EDF), fixed wings, helicopters are all the indicators of the diversity, possibilities and excitement brought about by electric aviation. Startups and Sillicon Valley are not the only players in this game. Incumbents are all in. Just look at the member companies of electric population and innovation committee (EPIC) of GAMA. Airbus has set up two separate entities for electric aviation research, in Silicon Valley developing the Vahana eVTOL planned for test flight by the end of the year, and the Urban Air Mobility division at the head office respectively. Airbus has decided to upgrade its F-Fan fixed wing project to E-Fan X, a hybrid/electric regional passenger airplane. Boeing, jointly with Jet Blue, invested in Zunum Aero to develop hybrid/electric regional aircraft as well. Bell helicopter and Embraer signed up with Uber to develop eVTOL technologies. Even more serious is when a national government wants to explore the possibility of using electric aircraft and wants to become a leading country in this field. The Norwegian Government has announced in spring 2017 that the country, which has already achieved the highest density of electric cars per inhabitant in the past 10 years, over a government program is evaluating the possibilities of electrifying the network of state owned airfields around the country. The conditions are ideal. As Norway has money in the budget from the oil, and a production of electric energy from water turbines which exceeds its consumption. It also has a network of airfields from which a lot of commuter flights mostly under 300km distance are operated as part of the state transport plan, because the

road network is very loose and ground transport out of the centers slow. For pilots and especially for new pilots who are just about to begin training, the cheaper, quieter and more environmental and neighbor community friendly electric flight now becomes more practical and closer to reality than ever. Several electric airplanes have obtained certification such as Pipistrel’s Alpha Electro (UL/LSA in Australia) and the Chinese RX1E (LSA). Although the situation of light – electric Aircraft in many countries is still unclear for the Microlight in Europe (demand for weight increase pending) and LSA in US (no electric motors allowed in LSA class), several electric flight training programs have been set up. The Swiss company AlpinAirPlanes is going to deploy 10 Alpha Electro at 10 trial airfields with flight schools, Each airfield will have a solar power recharging station and the distance between the airfields is selected so that they are within the 1.5 hours of endurance of the aircraft so you always can reach at least one of the other fields. A similar project will start this summer in Fresno county in California (USA) a team around Joseph Oldham. They will purchase four Alpha electro and use it in flight schools from four airfields. It is interesting that both projects are financed by sponsors and state support and in both countries the authorities allowed to fly in this test phase in the flight Training with permit to fly. There are two more flight training programs using the Alpha electro. One is organized by SpaceX because according to an old US law all astronauts must have a pilots licence, the private space travel organizer is going to train the future space tourist on the two Alpha Electro which will be delivered in summer 2017. finally the French Aeroclub Federation Française Aeronautique (FFA) announced at the Paris Airshow 2017 that they purchased thee Alpha electro which will fly with first Permit to Fly and then later as CSVLA. The French authorities will handle the operations and Pipistrel do the certification with EASA. In all cases also the standard Rotax-equipped Alphas will be available to assure that the new pilots also can fly with combustion engine aircraft. Another example for e-development getting practice news has been the world’s first e-flight-show which accompanied the e-flight-expo at the AERO exhibition. Various electric airplanes from unlimited class aerobatic airplane, to self-launch gliders, to ultralight trainers, to

multi world record airplanes gave the crowds impressive but much quieter demonstration flights at the e-flightshow. The diversity and implementation of electric aviation is more than eVTOL and flight training. The Swiss company H55 is now working with the Solar Impulse project co-founder and pilot André Borschberg. They use the Silence Aircraft Twister and jointly with Siemens they developed a single seat aerobatic airplane. At the AERO 2017 another Siss company MSW presented the project Evolaris, an electric aerobatic plane with an empty weight of 500kg and 221Kw electric motor power. Finally at the moment the most impressive e-Plane the Extra 330 LE, another high performance electric aerobatic airplane jointly developed by Extra Aircraft and Siemens, have successfully demonstrated the aerobatic performance as well as the capacity of glider towing and has beaten several world records. At the Paris Airshow the aircraft towed an aerobatic glider to 1000 Meter (with an average climb rate of 9.5 meters per second) then the glider performed aerobatics while the Extra landed and then after the glider landed the Extra, without recharging, took off again and for an impressive aerobatic show with 260Kw on the prop. In fact there are so many new electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) designs showing up that the world leading aircraft guide in this Class the world directory of light Aviation (WDLA) has newly added “multirotor” category in the WDLA which came out at the end of July this year (www.Widola.com) . There are also more electric aircraft in nearly all categories of the new WDLA. The editors around Willi Tacke and Xin Gou received so much information regarding all kinds of electric aircraft projects almost on a daily basis that they have decided to start a new publication called e-flight-Journal (www. e-flightJournal.com) to accommodate all the information and to better inform the curious readers of all the exciting and latest development of electric aircraft. The brave new world of electric aviation is forming. Electric aircraft are real and ready for purchase and to fly, at least in ultralight and LSA area. We sincerely hope that you are as excited as we are to read the intriguing new electric aircraft designs and to look forward even just five years from today.

Flying abroad is one of the most exciting parts of GA. It takes some preparation, of course, and one of the main questions is whether or not one has to take special precautions, or submit special forms like GAR, GENDEC etc. AOPA UK has organised the administration around GARs very well. But how has this been arranged in other countries? Is a GAR required or can you just fly into them? We received input from various countries and wish you happy and safe international flying this summer. Germany There are no GAR/ GENDEC Regulations for non-commercial aviation in Germany. Switzerland No GENDEC is needed in the whole of Switzerland. Switzerland does not know anything similar to GAR. Because Switzerland isn’t part of the Custom Union, the use of CUST AD is mandatory. Most of the aerodromes in Switzerland offer a limited CUST service (no import of declarable goods) on a PPR basis. The procedures may vary at each aerodrome - so refer to the AIP, Jeppesen/Bottlang, or visit the website of the appropriate aerodrome, where the requested forms are available. If in doubt call the aerodrome staff by phone. A guess is not good enough and won’t be understood by customs officers. An important fact: Switzerland is a Schengen State. Most GA pilots in Europe confuse Custom Union with Schengen and think that customs is not required anymore. That’s a serious mistake. As usual for cross border flights, a Flight Plan is required. Italy Italy has no such thing as GAR either. A fight plan is needed when crossing borders, and when entering/crossing CTR in local flights (an abbreviated Flight Plan can be requested in air for that purpose, so it is not a big deal). Intra Schengen flights do not require any Custom/Document checks, so theoretically they can land at any airport/ field. However, some local area authorities could require an early-warning for security purposes (Police). For private strips, landing must be approved by local owners.

Textron Aviation Receives Order for 15 Skyhawks

Textron Aviation Inc., announced at the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture that ATP Flight School has ordered 15 Cessna Skyhawk 172 aircraft. With the addition of these aircraft, the school’s training fleet will grow to include nearly 130 Skyhawks. “We’re thrilled that ATP has chosen the Skyhawk time and time again to train its new pilots,� said Doug May, vice president, Piston Aircraft. “

Cyprus In Cyprus, for local flights no GENDEC is required, but a local simplified flight plan is necessary. Having said that, since there is no General Aviation airport, access to Larnaca or Paphos airports (which are both International) are highly restricted and people applying for passes are vetted. For international flights prior notice has to be given to AIS providing details of the flight (Dates of outward and inward flights, Origin, Destination, Type of aircraft, Crew names and IDs, Pax names and IDs, Route, purpose of flight). Once the flight has been approved (yes, in Cyprus one has to obtain approval to fly, even for flights within the EU), the AIS registers the flight with the online GENDEC system of the airport’s operator (Hermes Airports). Every operator has to make prior arrangements and register with Hermes Airports so that he/she can access their online GENDEC system. Twelve hours before each flight (outward or inward), the aircraft operator must login and complete the online GENDEC. A flight plan is of course required for all trips. Spain The GAR might only be required in the Canary Islands, but AOPA Spain never saw this paper. A flight plan is required when crossing borders and to fly/depart/arrive into Controlled Airspace (even for touch and gos). Any flight from outside Schengen is required to land at an Airport with Custom services, which not all AENA (public) network airports have. Any airplane heading to a non-controlled airport from outside Schengen must contact the airport in advance and check procedures with local authorities. More information from: www.iaopa.eu

EASA has issued its Major Change approval for the G1000Nxi avionics suite for the P2006T in June. The G1000Nxi is available in the MkII version of the P2006T and is now available for delivery in EASA countries. The FAA validation of this major change is now underway and will be completed in the coming weeks. The twin Lycoming-engined 11-seat P2012 Traveller prototype took centre stage on Tecnam's stand at Aero ’17 in Friedrichshafen, Germany earlier this year. Many airfields built in the heat of war have done their duty and faded into history, the majority returning to their former lives serving agricultural needs, probably unrecognisable as airfields today. Not so all airfields borne of war's necessity, a few would be destined to serve their country's needs far beyond the call of combat. Blackbushe Airport is one such airfield. The recent “Festival of Flight” celebrating her 75th Anniversary confirmed Blackbushe is still very much ‘operational’.

weather proved a bonus when Heathrow fell below limits! Heathrow bound flights would divert to fog-free Blackbushe. The airfield’s importance took a large step forward when the US Navy decided to establish their only UK land base at Blackbushe, while BOAC and BEA carried out extensive crew training with many types, including all the Comet variants. The government elected to close Blackbushe in May, 1960. Following the Gatwick investment Blackbushe had to be closed, despite the airlines of Blackbushe forming a ‘buy and takeover’ consortium. The somewhat fearsome FIDO system was installed in 1943. “Fog Intensive Dispersal Of”, the awe inspiring system consisting of pipes either side of the main runway through which large quantities of petrol were pumped, when ignited the resultant blaze gave the name “flare path” a whole new meaning. Incredibly costly to run, FIDO was used to good effect burning off fog when necessary, but it would never be a “commercial” success. Photo Reconnaissance work carried out from Hartford Bridge prior to D-Day was of the immense value in both the planning and execution of D-Day. PR units photographed the French coast from dawn to dusk. 16 Squadron with PRXI Spitfires certainly emphasised the dawn to dusk element operating blue and also completely pink Spitfires to match the time of day sky. A genuine blue 16 Squadron Spitfire participated in the 75th Anniversary celebrations. The name RAF Hartford Bridge was changed during 1944 after new personnel posted to the airbase sometimes mistakenly travelled to Hartford Bridge in Northumberland 300 miles north of their intended destination. Thankfully, soon after its closure, AVM “Pathfinder” Bennett appreciated the lost potential of Blackbushe, and purchased the 360 acres that form today's airfield. Kings, Queens, Presidents and Prime Ministers, all have flown from Blackbushe. Today, Blackbushe is home to Aerobility, the amazing charity that brings the joy of flight to injured service personnel, and to those who are disabled. Wijet, Europe's largest jet taxi operator, Phoenix Helicopters, and flying schools Air First and Blackbushe Aviation are all established residents. The Airport is now owned by a consortium intent on developing the great potential locked up in what is one of southern UK’s most outstanding airfields. Blackbushe has survived 75 years of war and peace, even closure, but still she lives - a fact not lost on the thousands who joined in to celebrate her 75th birthday this July.

At War

Flying started at the new RAF Hartford Bridge before the official November, 1942 opening. Aero Airborne Flight were suffering from lack of space at their Farnborough base, and fortunately the new Hartford Bridge provided the necessary facility for their ongoing Horsa and Hamilcar glider trials using RAF Whitleys for aero towing. The winter of 1942/43 passed fairly quietly as the airfield's infrastructure was brought to operational readiness. The summer witnessed a rapid build-up of squadrons and the public highway that ran through the airfield was closed 24 hours a day. The airfield took on a distinctly international flavour as the growing number of home based squadrons included the famous Free French “Lorraine Squadron”, together with Canadian, Polish and Dutch squadrons. 88, 226, and 342 Lorraine Squadron flew Bostons and Mitchells to great effect attacking strategic enemy locations. 20 PISTON BUYER EUROPE SEPTEMBER 2017

As war ended the airfield transferred to RAF Transport Command's care. However, the London area was very short of suitable ‘all weather’ runways. As the Ministry of Civil Aviation realised the benefits of Blackbushe, her new life as a commercial airport began. She played a large role in the Berlin Airlift, while becoming a focal point in the post war growth of the British independent airline industry. What Type of Financing Options are Available to the GA Pilot? Financing the purchase of aircraft is, unsurprisingly, not something your typical high street bank will consider, which has led to the establishment of specialist funders. We interviewed Andy Blundell, Director of Aviation and Marine Finance at UK merchant bank Close Brothers to find out more about this niche part of our industry. helped customers purchase thousands of aircraft, ranging from small flying club aircraft to mid-sized corporate jets, historic warbird aircraft, two seat private helicopters to large corporate and air ambulance helicopters. Tell us more about Close Brothers Aviation and Marine

Close Brothers Aviation and Marine has been financing the general and business aviation industry in Britain and Ireland for over four decades after first opening our doors in 1976 as Air and General Finance Limited. A little known fact is that we are one of the founder members of the British Business General Aviation Association, with representation on the board of the main council for the last 17 years. In addition, we are also an active member of both the British Marine Federation and British Helicopter Association. We typically employ people who have worked directly in the aviation sector or have a specialist aviation finance background, which helps us better understand the needs and requirements of our customers.

Is insurance required for aircraft or helicopters?

Yes – all aircraft must be comprehensively insured, with the Lender’s interest in the aircraft noted on the policy.

What are your views on the sector?

It’s fair to say that we don’t have a ‘typical’ customer because we work with all types of people, from private owners who have a passion for aviation all the way up to corporate operators with multi-aircraft fleets.

Arranging the financing for the purchase of private aircraft is usually a straightforward process. A basic transaction for a small personal or corporate aircraft may proceed as follows:

1. The borrower provides information about

themselves and their prospective aircraft to the lender.

2. The lender performs an appraisal of the aircraft's

value and undertakes its own internal credit analysis. The lender would normally expect the borrower to undertake their own pre-purchase survey of the aircraft.

3. The lender and borrower agree terms on the structure of the transaction.

What type of aircraft do you finance?

We can finance a wide range of aircraft, including light piston aircraft, turboprops, helicopters, executive corporate jets and air ambulances. We also finance vintage aircraft and are a strong supporter of historic aviation in the UK and Ireland. Aircraft are usually registered in the UK, USA, Ireland, Isle of Man or Guernsey. We can finance brand new aircraft direct from the manufacturer, or pre-owned aircraft that are being sold from dealers, brokers or via private sale. We can also consider refinancing aircraft that are already owned, to release capital for overhauls, upgrades, rebuilds or other purposes. We can’t; however, finance aircraft operated by major airlines and the Armed Services.

How does aircraft finance work at Close Brothers Aviation and Marine?

The finance facilities are structured by way of a loan with security by way of a mortgage over the aircraft; facility fees normally apply. The mortgage will be registered at the CAA or another national aviation authority. When lending to companies and limited liability partnerships (LLPs) we also register a mortgage with Companies House. Personal guarantees may be required.

4. The lender performs a title search based on the

aircraft's registration number, in order to confirm that no liens or title defects are present. The lender then prepares documentation for the transaction, which includes dealing with the vendor, insurers, maintenance organisations and (where applicable) lawyers.

The general and business aviation sector is a vital part of the aviation industry and the wider UK economy. I feel strongly that its importance should not be overlooked. GA can sometimes suffer from the image of being a luxury industry. Behind the scenes, it is really no different from other more traditional industries. It requires a significant support structure and provides employment for pilots, engineers, flying schools, engineering apprentices, insurers, airport workers, air traffic controllers, parts suppliers, administrators, regulators, caterers, tourist workers and managers. This in itself is a contributor to the national economy, but it can be multiplied several times by what the aircraft can do as a tool for business. Many entrepreneurs are able to optimise their time and maximise the productivity of their business by using private aircraft; however, the use of aircraft as business tools is rarely advertised and happens quite discretely. As such the multiplier effects and subsequent benefits to the economy can also remain hidden. Given the vital role that general and business aviation plays in the UK, Close Brothers is committed to remain an active supporter by continuing to finance aircraft for our customers.

5. At closing, the loan documentation is executed and then funds are transferred.

How are the finance packages structured?

Deciding how to finance an aircraft is a key component in the ownership process. Any good finance house will work with their clients to understand the key drivers of each transaction, taking into account the proposed usage and maintenance cycle of the aircraft, together with the cash flow requirements of the borrower, to offer a tailored and bespoke solution for each transaction. This is not just marketing speak – because of the nature of general and business aviation, you cannot apply a ‘one size fits all’ approach to transactions – each deal is unique in its own right. The sheer variety of aircraft available is another factor to consider and a reason why it’s important each opportunity is assessed individually - we have

Make-sense Makeovers Before Selling:

Get Maximum Value Without Over-Investment in the Refurbishment Owners of business jets may consider investing in improvements in the hope of getting a better sale price, notes Dave Higdon. Although the reality will usually disappoint in today’s market, there are nevertheless items sellers can undertake to refurbish their jets and position them well to sell… The types of refurbishment work discussed below that a seller might undertake will ensure the asset attracts its actual nominal market value. However difficult the topic of residual value is in today’s market, there is every reason for sellers to present their aircraft in a favorable light. Anything less simply cheats the seller, since the aircraft will take longer to attract a buyer in a competitive marketplace and render lower offers from those who do take an interest.

Maximum-Value Turnkey

Market preferences among pre-owned aircraft shoppers seem to take a circular course over several years, with buyer preferences swinging from a high level of ‘Do-ItYourself’ bargain-hunters to cash/credit-flush shoppers seeking a turnkey buy (one already outfitted with the preferred cockpit and cabin amenities). Between the looming mandates for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) and Controller-Pilot Datalink Communications (CPDLC), today’s buyers seem to want aircraft already outfitted to meet those mandates. Both upgrades, however, require significant investment on the part of their present owners, and some scheduled down-time to install. Simpler, shorter lead-time upgrades tend to find favor among many buyers. Of the four basic categories of upgrade (cockpit, engine, exterior and interior), the one with arguably the most flexibility may also offer the biggest bang for the buck: the interior. Interior upgrades come in a variety of forms, from down-to-the-sheet-metal makeovers to updates focused on improving the cosmetics while eschewing more significant, longer-term work. Let's look at the options for making the aircraft look, feel and smell like brand new.

Seating Surfaces

Upholstery takes a lot of wear and tear. It’s inside the cabin that business aircraft often show battle scars. It’s where the owners and users spend most of their time. For the prospective seller, there are a multitude of opportunities to burnish the aircraft's ramp appeal, while focusing on some of the simpler, lower-cost options for renewing or refreshing the interior. Reupholstering seats, for example, requires relatively little downtime compared to other more-invasive jobs such as a full-interior makeover. With advance planning

and coordination, renewing the seating upholstery can fit into the time window of an annual inspection or longer-term C- or D-Check. And by selecting more common materials, you’ll find them readily available when you need them, at a lower cost than customized items, while giving your airplane a pleasant cabin environment that will likely increase the aircraft’s appeal to a wider pool of prospective buyers.

Carpeting & Trim

At the same time as you consider upholstery renewal you may also want to replace foot-worn carpeting, which can be – with advanced planning with the interior shop – accomplished within the downtime of an annual inspection. Unless you want to give the interior an all-new look color-wise (perhaps neutralizing it a little from a highly customized interior for the purpose of achieving a sale), a carpet vendor will be able to help you find variations in carpet nap and depth without changing the overall color scheme of the interior. Conversely, combining the replacement of carpeting and upholstery together can open up the option to change the interior look altogether. Remember, much like upholstering seats and sofas, fitting carpeting to an aircraft interior typically involves more planning than carpeting your rooms at home. Not only does the carpeting need cutting and trimming to fit the floor plan, but the carpet pieces require edging to be sewn and prevent them from fraying. Hence the need for planning prior to the airplane going into the maintenance hangar, so that carpet pieces are ready to install.

Buckles, Trim and Woodwork

If you’re planning on selling your jet at any point in the near future, the shine in your newly refurbished cabin will owe much to the buckles, trim and woodwork. While renewing the appearance of upholstery and carpeting, it makes sense to consider giving equal treatment to related hardware. Seat belts and buckles get as much wear as the upholstery, and they are relatively simple – and inexpensive – to replace… ditto for wood-finish inlays, metal-finished trim-work, and side-panels in the cabin. Again, advanced planning and thorough coordination with the shop charged with producing the replacement hardware is a must for this work to be successfully accomplished during downtime.

Interior Renewal Alternatives

Even if your airplane has been refurbished relatively recently, you should consider hiring a cleaning or detailing crew to give the entire interior a deep cleaning prior to placing it on the market. If the interior of the jet you’re selling is not brandnew, it should certainly seem newer and less worn than its competition.

Regulatory Limitations

One sticking point for some operators involves the more constrained options of fabrics, leathers and carpets for aircraft use. Always remember that fabrics, leathers and carpeting approved for aircraft use under Part 23 or Part 25 must meet FAA burn standards for the type certificate in use.

Ramp Appeal Enhancements

Finally, while the interior appointments may get the most use – and the most attention – never forget that first impressions start with first viewing. A deep cleaning, waxing and polishing of the exterior can make old paint look newer. Of course, new paint is always an option - but a full-blown repaint typically takes a week or two. That's because for the best-quality finish the job starts with the removal of ailerons, elevators, flaps, gear doors, rudder, and trim tabs; windows and door seals must be masked off, the surface prepped, primed and finally painted. The paint then needs time to cure, preferably in a climate-stable environment similar to what's needed to apply the paint. A deep cleaning of the paint, polishing of stainless steel and polished aluminum surfaces can render an old paint job like-new. If the trim colors are faded or dated but the base color is in decent shape, a change in trim-colors design can help make an old paint livery look more contemporary. Often the new trim colors can be applied without the removal of control surfaces.

The shorter the downtime, the lower the cost of accomplishing a renewal that is sure to help improve the ramp appeal – and sale prospects – of your older business jet.

One year after unveiling a cabin mock-up of its all-new high-performance singleengine turboprop at Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh, Textron, has made significant progress in bringing to market the Cessna Denali. Blackhawk Upgrades for King Air 350

Blackhawk Modifications is celebrating completion of certification flight testing for its newest Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) project — the XP67A Engine+ Upgrade for the King Air 350. Certification flight testing was completed at 15,000 pounds maximum take-off weight (MTOW) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval is imminent. Oriens Aviation Confirms Goodwood Sale

Oriens Aviation, the British Isles sales distributor of the Pilatus PC-12 confirmed the sale of a new PC-12NG to a private customer at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June. Accepting the aircraft, Neil Armstrong, entrepreneur owner of Armstrong Group Holdings, acknowledged he had conducted a lot of due diligence on other aircraft types and took several demo flights before determining the PC-12 as best for his business and leisure needs. The aircraft will be based at Leeds Bradford, near to the family’s home in North Yorkshire. Mr. Armstrong anticipates he will fly up to 200 hours a year for his business interests - in housing, oil and gas and utilities, and for leisure. He has interests in Jersey, the west of Ireland and Mallorca, which all suit the PC-12’s flying range. Since 1994 more than 40 of the PC-12 turboprop aircraft have been sold in the UK to people who want to enjoy the real convenience of a private aircraft for business or pleasure. First PC-24 Series Aircraft Now Standing On Its Own “Legs”

Final assembly work on our first PC-24 customer aircraft is proceeding at a swift pace: the fuselage and wings of the first series-built PC-24 were joined together at the head office site in July. Series production is being accelerated continuously to ensure that prompt deliveries of first customer aircraft can go ahead immediately after certification. This operation, referred to as a “marriage”, requires the highest degree of concentration from the Pilatus builders. The process of attaching the wings to the fuselage demands accuracy to within a hundredth of a millimetre. Not to mention that the connection has to be solid enough to last for a “business jet lifetime”. The very first PC-24 will go to the American fractional ownership business PlaneSense immediately after certification, scheduled during Q4 2017. CAA Releases new Skyway Code

GFC 500: Built upon the new and very popular G5 electronic flight instrument, the GFC 500 autopilot uniquely integrates with the G5 to provide pilots with an economical autopilot and modern flight instrument. An optional adapter allows the GFC 500 and G5 to interface with select Garmin GPS or VHF navigators. Initial STC for the GFC 500 is expected to be completed on the Cessna 172 in Q4 2017 with the Cessna 182 and Piper PA-28 aircraft series to follow. The GFC 600 and GFC 500 both incorporate solid state attitude with robust self-monitoring capabilities to provide reliability and safety benefits that are similar to the popular GFC 700 autopilot.

Global Jeppesen Charts Available on ForeFlight

Jeppesen’s library of standard chart coverages are now available as an option with the current release of ForeFlight Mobile. Pilots can choose from 13 coverages that span the globe and include departure, arrival, and terminal procedures, airport charts, and Jeppesen Airway Manuals. Jeppesen charts are also enabled for colour inversion, reducing screen glare when flying at night. Aero-Dienst Extends GE Agreement

General Electric (GE) has extended Aero-Dienst’s Authorized Service Centre Network Agreement for CF34 engine, which powers the Bombardier Challenger 600 series. This extends the 2011 agreement when GE elected Aero-Dienst as one of the first authorized service providers for the Business and General Aviation platforms within the GE European network. Aero-Dienst also offers AOG and mobile repair teams (MRT) services together with all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, engine R&R, removal/reinstallation of external engine components including warranty and “GEOnPoint” support. IFR Approaches to Non-Instrument Runways

EASA has focused on making instrument flying more accessible for GA pilots as part of the GA roadmap initiative, resulting in the competency-based instrument rating, the enroute instrument rating and more proportionate theoretical knowledge requirements. The process is still ongoing with the basic instrument rating already well on its way. However, the goal also is to remove other obstacles for IFR in GA operations, such as certification of equipment and the IFR operating environment for example.

AOPA EU GA-Desk Cleared for Take-Off

The IAOPA EU General Aviation Desk is now operational, the purpose of which is to make sure that European Regulations are implemented in the same way throughout Europe. Some European National Aviation Authorities do not implement EU regulations, whilst others implement them incorrectly. Some National Aviation Authorities might even enforce outdated National regulations which may neutralize the European ones. The Garmin G5 electronic flight instrument will soon be compatible with a wide-range of third-party autopilots available on the market. Utilizing the new GAD 29B adapter, the G5 directional gyro (DG)/horizontal situation indicator (HSI) can interface with a variety of autopilots to provide heading and course error to drive the autopilot.

MT-Propeller Entwicklung GmbH has received the EASA Certification for STC 10062183 for the Quiet Fan Jet composite propeller for various aircraft types. President Gerd Muehlbauer highlighted the following advantages to the installation: • No engine modifications (no cam or beta tube change) • Ground roll distance reduced by approx. 30m (98 ft) • Twin- and single-engine climb performance slightly improved by up to 100ft/min • Cruise performance slightly improved by up to 4kts • Same weight of MT five-blade natural composite propeller compared to original three-blade metal propeller • Cabin noise reduced by 3-5dB(A) depending on location • Cooler ITTS during engine start up due to a shorter starting time of one-third. Due to the smaller diameter the MT-Propeller for the SA226 series has more ground clearance for less blade tip erosion while the MT-Propeller natural composite blades provide significant inside and outside noise reduction. They have no life limitation, and are repairable in case of an FOD. They also provide best vibration damping characteristics for almost vibration free propeller operation and have bonded on nickel alloy leading edges for superior erosion protection of the blades.

With a compatible navigation source, the G5 can also interface with select autopilots for coupled flight in heading and navigation modes. Additionally, when interfaced with a GTN 650/750 or GNS 430W/530W, the G5 can provide GPSS roll steering navigation from the navigator to the autopilot. Pilots can simply select GPSS on the G5 and heading mode on the autopilot and the autopilot will fly smooth intercepts, holding patterns, procedure turns and more. ■ More information from: www.garmin.com/aviation

For private pilots traveling to new destinations, the amount of information required can be overwhelming, notes Saxer. Garmin Unveils GA Retrofit Autopilots Garmin has announced the GFC 600 and GFC 500 solid state attitude-based (AHRS-derived) autopilots for fixed-wing General Aviation aircraft.

Redbird Flight VTO Helicopter Trainer Approval

The FAA has approved the Redbird VTO full motion helicopter trainer as an Advanced Aviation Training Device (AATD). This approval will allow pilots to credit a portion of the time spent training in the VTO towards the aeronautical experience requirements for the pilot certificate or rating being sought. Private pilot applicants will be able to credit up to 7.5 hours and instrument applicants may credit up to 20 hours of

training time in the helicopter trainer. Currently, the Robinson R22 configuration of the VTO is approved. The approval as an AATD is valid for five years as long as the requirements of the FAA’s Letter of Authorization (LOA) are met.

Development Program Takes Huge Step Forwards The programme development made another huge step forward with the rollout of the prototype three (P3) on June 28, 2017. Thus, in future two prototypes will be used for test flights: the prototype two and now also the new P3, which comes close to the serial version. Andreas Löwenstein Chief Executive Officer

Both prototypes will contribute to achieving a quicker progress to the Type Certificate. P2 flew in total already more than 50 flight hours whereof 30 alone in the last three months. If the ground tests are included into this calculation, the rotor system is already rotating for more than 100 hours. A fourth helicopter will reinforce the fleet in the first quarter of the next year. Simultaneously already today those parts are ordered for serial production, which have a delivery time of several months. Currently there are 12 fixed purchase contracts and more than 100 international purchasing commitments. From an entrepreneurial view MSH reached important milestones in the first half-year. In Mollis we had the

opportunity to celebrate the construction of the 3800m2 production hall. With these modern facilities beyond mere production space also administration rooms as well as training and product support infrastructure will be available. A second production hall is located in Näfels. It will serve after a comprehensive modernisation and reconstruction as a logistics centre as well as for the production of cell structures and our rotor blades. One of the largest autoclaves (”baking oven” for composite parts) in Switzerland is also located in Näfels and will be ready for production in August of this year. The personnel increased from 136 (June 2016) to 213 employees as of (June 2017), who are mainly

highly specialised and qualified engineers. The continuous personnel development will be continued during the next months, mainly in the production area for preparing to serial production of the SH09 helicopter, which will start in about 20 months in Mollis and Näfels. The management was reinforced with Michele Riccobono, Head of Flight Operations and Flight Testing, and Jan Nowacki, Chief Operating Officer. Tecnam announced that NASA has acquired a second Tecnam P2006T fuselage to speed the evaluating process and the survey of potentialities of Leading Edge Asynchronous Technology (LEAPtech), with the aim of developing safer, more energy efficient, lower operating cost and greener GA aircraft. X-57 is the first NASA X-plane to feature a fully distributed electric propulsion system, which researchers will use to demonstrate an increase in cruise energy efficiency, as well as reductions in carbon emission and aircraft noise. The wing will be manufactured and integrated on the P2006T fuselage by the US based company Xperimental.
