> The new BELL 505 JetRanger X launched in Anaheim, USA earlier in 2014
The New BELL 505 JetRanger X This year’s inaugural HELI UK EXPO event sees the European launch of the new BELL 505 Jet Ranger X. At the world launch in the USA earlier this year John Garrison, CEO of Bell Helicopter said, “Bell Helicopter changed the face of the industry nearly 50 years ago with the introduction of the legendary JetRanger.” “Today we reveal the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, the highperformance, high-value aircraft our customers have been asking for in this category. Not only is the Bell 505 competitively priced, it offers a combination of features, capabilities and support customers have come to expect from Bell Helicopter.”
Customer driven design The customer-driven design of the Bell 505 Jet Ranger X places safety, performance and affordability at its forefront, blending proven systems with advanced technology and a sleek, modern design. The Garmin G1000H Integrated Avionics Suite provides pilots critical flight information at a glance to maximize situational awareness. Pilot workload is further reduced by the Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine with dual channel Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC). The Bell 505 features a high inertia rotor system delivering superior auto rotation capabilities. With the ideal combination of speed, range and useful load, the Jet Ranger X is designed to deliver best-in-class performance. “It’s an exciting time to be at Bell Helicopter, working side-by-side with our customers to create the next generation of vertical lift,” Garrison said. “Throughout our entire planning and development process, we are engaging our customers. They are providing us with actionable insights about how we can improve our products and what they will need for their missions in the coming years. This input has been invaluable in ensuring we deliver the products our customers need to be successful.”
Customers have responded favourably Customers have responded favourably to the new Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, scheduled for first flight late this year. Bell Helicopter has also begun signing letters of intent for the new aircraft at the show. Customers can visit www.bell505.com to select specific models and see pricing options before ordering their aircraft directly online. The Bell 505 Jet Ranger X is a five-seat, single-engine, turbine helicopter leveraging Bell Helicopter’s proven technology and nearly half a century of experience defining the SLS market with the original Bell JetRanger. With a cruise speed of 125 knots, range of 360 nautical miles and useful load of 1,500 pounds, the Bell 505 is designed to be the safest and easiest aircraft to fly in its category while still remaining affordably priced. The Jet Ranger X is a multi-mission helicopter, designed to meet a wide variety of missions with its fully flat floor, increased cabin volume and clam shell doors that will provide customers the configuration flexibility needed in today’s market. It can support a wide variety of operations categories, including the utility segment, corporate and private owners, and training schools. WELCOME TO HELI UK EXPO 2014
Andy Caddick Over Arm to Rotor Arm GUEST SEMINAR SPEAKER - TUESDAY 3:30PM It was at an early age that my passion for flying helicopters was lit while watching helicopters operating throughout the vast expanses of my country of birth, New Zealand. I was born and raised in Christchurch, the son of English emigrants, where I spent my youth growing up until in 1987, as most New Zealanders do, I left the country of my birth and travelled to the UK.
I was introduced into the UK helicopter environment in 1999 by one of my closest mates, who showed me the wonder and benefits of flying helicopters around a very busy Britain.
For the next 3 years I spent my time travelling back and forth from NZ and the UK playing cricket, obtained a contract playing for Somerset CCC, where I played until I retired from all forms of domestic cricket in 2009.
My first flight experience in the UK was in a Robinson R44.
The highlight of my career was in making 62 Test and 54 One-day international appearances for England. In all, I took 234 Test wickets and 69 one-day international victims, climaxing in taking four wickets in an over against the West Indies at the Headingley test match in 2000.
In the 2005 season took my 1,000th first class wicket I was one of Wisden’s ‘Cricketers of the Year’ in 2001. In the 2005 season took my 1,000th first class wicket, becoming one of only six current players to have reached that landmark. My best season for Somerset was in 1998 when he claimed 105 first class wickets. The icing on the cake was when Somerset County Cricket Club honored me in by naming the new pavilion after me, which is known as the Andy Caddick Pavilion.
Even though my first flight experience in the UK was in a Robinson R44, I was soon spoilt by the joys of cruising around the skies in a SA341 Gazelle. With my busy domestic and international cricket career, it was difficult to find the time to do my PPLH course but when I suffered a serious side injury during a test match against Pakistan in 2002, the next 7 weeks of rehab proved the perfect time to start my quest to become a private helicopter pilot. Fourteen months later, I was fully qualified R22 pilot looking to move on to bigger more comfortable aircraft. My next steps were obtaining ratings on the R44, MD500, and B206, and in fact I soon owned my own MD500, G-MACE. Since retiring from Cricket, I felt a move into the aviation industry was the perfect transition for me, so today I run my own business, UKHelisales Ltd, connection with AT Aviation Sales Ltd, helping customers acquire the right aircraft for their personal or business use.
THE UK HELICOPTER SHOW
I do feel it is true that people have various passions and goals in life, that no matter what it takes, you must fulfill and achieve. With this in mind, I can only encourage those of us, thinking, dreaming or even contemplating flying as a career or for pure enjoyment, to take the plunge and experience what most of us now within the industry, take for granted. Safe flying to you all.

100 Years of the Helicopter
consisting of four biplane blades was placed at each of the four corners of the cross, giving a total of 32 separate lifting surfaces. The pilot sat in the centre of the cross next to a 40-hp engine.
The Multi-use Rotor Machine Vertical flight celebrated its centenary in 2007. In a short article Richard Ayling, editor of GA BUYER EUROPE takes a look at some of the brave men who developed the theories of rotor-flight from 1907 and provides some significant examples through the last 107 years of continuous helicopter development. 1907 - The Three French Pioneers Léger, Bréguet and Cornu
In 1907, about four years after the Wright brothers’ first successful powered flights in fixed-wing airplanes at Kitty Hawk in the United States, three French helicopter pioneers were conducting tests with varying success with their relative machines. On June 13, the first > Maurice Léger - the first piloted piloted helicopter flew, helicopter and crashed, in France. Designed and piloted by the engineer Maurice Léger, the machine, fitted with two rotor blades, 13 meters long and powered by four engines, took off, briefly hovered, slipped sideways and fell. The crash left his machine damaged beyond repair and Léger never tried again. But within months two other French aviation pioneers took up the challenge.
> Bréguet’s machine “Gyroplane 1” On August 24, Maurice Volumard made the first recognized vertical flight (although steadied by ground handlers) in “Gyroplane-1”. It is reported to have carried him briefly off the ground. He managed to rise to a height of about 60 centimeters, or two feet, at the Bréguet family’s factory in Douai, in northern France. Photographs show the assistance of several men stabilizing and perhaps even lifting the machine. In following weeks it achieved altitudes of more than a meter, before Bréguet concluded that it was inherently unstable and turned his attention more profitably to horizontal flight. Clearly, the machine never flew completely freely because, like the Cornu machine, it lacked stability and a proper means of control. However, the Bréguet machine was more sophisticated and probably closer to achieving proper vertical flight than the machine built about the same time by Paul Cornu.
Cornu’s Success
Bréguet’s Hover In 1904 French scientist and academician Charles Richet built a small, unpiloted helicopter. While the machine was unsuccessful, one of Richet’s students was the future famous aviation pioneer, Louis Bréguet. During the latter part of 1906 the brothers Louis and Jacques Bréguet had begun to conduct helicopter experiments of their own under the guidance of Professor Richet. The Bréguet Brothers were of an affluent > Louis Bréguet famous clock making family, and were subsequently to become pioneers in French aviation. Louis Bréguet made meticulous tests of airfoil shapes, paralleling those of the Wright Brothers and without a doubt understood the essential aerodynamic theory of the helicopter. In 1907, the Bréguet Brothers built their first helicopter. The ungainly Bréguet-Richet Gyroplane No:1 quad-rotor, weighing more than half a ton, consisted of four long girders made of steel tubes and arranged in the form of a horizontal cross. A rotor
THE UK HELICOPTER SHOW
> Paul Cornu on his machine Less than three months after Bréguet’s first “successful” vertical flight, a French bicycle repairer and inventor, named Paul Cornu built a tandem rotor machine that also lifted off the ground a few feet, near Lisieux, France on November 13th 1907. This is considered to be the first controlled vertical free flight. Comu had constructed a simple, vertical flight airframe with a gross weight (with pilot) of about 575~lbs. Using two 20-foot (6-meter) counter-rotating rotors at each end. Power was supplied to the rotors by a 24-hp (18-kW) Antoinette petrol engine with belt transmission. Each rotor had two relatively large but low aspect ratio blades set at the periphery of a large spoked wheel. The rotors rotated in opposite directions to cancel torque reaction. A primitive means of control was achieved by placing auxiliary wings in the slipstream below the rotors. The machine was reported to have made several tethered and non-tethered flights assisted by sticks held by men on the ground, helping stabilize the machine due to its poor controllability.

was known as “Igor’s nightmare” and reflected the mechanical complexity of his early prototypes. Sikorsky’s first helicopter, the VS-300, was flying by May 1940.
First Production Machines
> Etienne Oehmichen during his record flight in April, 1924 Etienne Oehmichen, a scientist employed by Peugeot, began his experiments in 1920 by suspending a balloon above a twin-rotor helicopter to provide additional lift. A later design had four lifting airscrews and five auxiliary propellers. On April 14, 1924, he flew this type of craft, powered by a 180-horsepower (134-kilowatt) Rhone engine, 1,181 feet (360 meters), establishing the first helicopter distance record officially recognized by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale. On May 4, now powered by eight propellers, lifted by four rotors and stabilized by a centrally mounted gyroscope - he became the first to fly a helicopter at least one kilometre (0.6 mile) in a closed circuit in a 5,550-foot (1.692-kilometer) flight that lasted 14 minutes and rose to 50 feet (15 meters) with a top speed of 24 kilometers, or 15 miles, an hour.
1930-40’s Developments
> Louis Bréguet and Rene Dorand’s 1935 machine > Igor Sikorsky in his VS-300 heli prototype in May 1940 During the period 1930-1936, the famous French aviation pioneers Louis Breguet and Rene Dorand made particularly notable advances in the development of a practical helicopter. Their machine of 1935 was relatively large for the era, with a coaxial rotor configuration. Work on the Breguet-Dorand machine was stopped prior to the outbreak of World War 2. During the period 1938-43, the German, Antoine Flettner, developed several helicopter designs. Flettner’s success came with using a side-by-side intermeshing rotor configuration, which became known as a synchcropter. In 1939, Flettner’s Fl-265 synchropter flew successfully and was the first helicopter to demonstrate transition into autorotation and then back again into powered flight. Flettner built several other machines, including the Fl-282 Hummingbird. With the Focke Fa-266 (Fa-233E), the Fl-282 was one of the first helicopters to enter into production. Before emigrating to the USA, Igor Sikorsky had experimented in Czarist Russia with primitive vertical lift aircraft as early as 1907. In the USA United States, he went on to design and build giant flying boats, but in 1935, Sikorsky was issued a patent, which showed a relatively modern looking single rotor/tail rotor helicopter design. To the workers at the Sikorsky plant in Connecticut, the machine

> The Bell Model 47 > Sikorsky S-55 developed privately in the 1950’s The famous Bell Model 47, became the world’s first commercially certified helicopter. During its nearly 30-year manufacturing period over 5,000 were produced in the United States alone, and at least another 1,000 were license built in more than 20 other countries. The Sikorsky S-55 helicopter was a utility helicopter developed with company funds and without government sponsorship. Sikorsky designed and fabricated a mockup of an entirely new model with many novel features in less than one year. Its most significant novel features included unique placement of its piston engine and the incorporation of offset hinges in its main rotor head.

> The British team enjoying their successes at last year’s championships.
History of the Helicopter Club of Great Britain THE HCGB is the primary representative body for the growing number of private helicopter owners and pilots. The purpose of the club is to promote safe and considerate flying and to encourage its members to actively take part in the many varied sporting and social event the club organises each year. In the latter years, the club has been heavily involved in fighting to preserve the interests of its members in the face of newly proposed European legislation that aims to affect the long established freedoms of general aviation - both rotary and fixed wing. The aim is to ensure that wherever possible, new legislation affecting general aviation is practical, appropriate and cost effective.
The Helicopter Club of Great Britain (HCGB) was formed in 1966 with the aim of bringing together helicopter pilots, owners and enthusiasts.
The club is represented on several committees including the Royal Aero Club, the FAI, the General Aviation Alliance, the General Aviation Consultative Committee and the General Aviation Safety Council as well as other consultative committees. As a member of the RAeC and the FAI, the club organises regular sporting events including the British Helicopter Championship/Air Games. Club members (crews and judges) regularly take part in the World Helicopter Championships and other international events hosted by foreign aero sport organisations.

The Heli UK Expo Challenge Cup The Helicopter Club of Great Britain (HCGB) holds an annual British Helicopter Championship for members and guests to compete. In the past five years the emphasis in helicopter air sports has been to make them more spectator friendly. The Heli UK Expo Air Challenge Cup is the first series of Air Races organised in the UK. It is a crowd facing series of races where the spectator can watch some thrilling flying as helicopters race up and own parallel courses against the clock and speed is of the essence!
Event 1 - The Parallel Fender Rigging The event will be flown by two competitors at the same time on parallel courses. The event requires precise flying with a large boat fender and rope lengths in a sequence of 4, 6 and 8 metres, and a flying time of 60 seconds. The direction of flight through each entrance gate is given to the crews at the event briefing. The helicopter will fly through the entrance gate and the timing will begin. The helicopter then flies to each container in the given order and drop the fender in to that container before proceeding to the
next container. When the fender is dropped in to the third container the timing finishes. There are penalties to be collected along the way for missing the entrance gate, touching the ground and flying the course in the wrong order. The total time for this event is only 90 seconds for the qualifying rounds then 75 seconds for the knock out stage.
Event 2 - Parallel Slalom This event is flown in the same way as the fender rigging as there are again two helicopters flying at the same time on a parallel course. This time the co-pilot is flying with a bucket full of water. The object of the race is for the helicopter to fly from the departure gate with the bucket on the end of three metre rope up to a container of water. The bucket is then filled with water, the helicopter will increase its altitude and the bucket will be five metres below the helicopter. The pilot will then fly
> Austrian military Alouette (lower) and Jet Ranger piloted by Daid Monks during the Parallel Slalom event at the World Air Games, Turin, 2009. This was the first time that the FAI organised event had included helicopters. Photo: Dino Marcellino. up and down the course giving a total of ten gates to pass. The bucket full of water must be between the gates and must pass below the top of the gates. After completing the course of all ten gates the pilot must then fly the helicopter to the target table where the top resembles a bulls eye and place the bucket as close to the centre as possible. The timing concludes when the rope is released.
