The Brazilian capital is preparing for the peaceful invasion of young people from all over the world ery little time separates us from the inauguration of the XXVIII World Youth Day. South America will be the protagonist of this planetary event.

Only two years have passed since the end of the World Youth Day in Madrid. In August 2011, Pope Benedict had made an appointment with the young people in Brazil. Since then, the young people have been preparing themselves for the event with Peter’s Successor.

It will be the first time for Pope Francis, an enormous crowd which will represent the only Apostolic Journey of 2013. The programme of the 28th WYD will continue ac-

THE POPE'S INVITATION a pag. 18

Young people need to tell the world: it is good to follow Jesus; it is good to go with Jesus; the message of Jesus is good; it is good to come out of ourselves, from the edges of the existence of the world and to bring Jesus to others! Three words: joy, cross, young people.

From Rome to Rio passing through Toronto, Sydney and Manila: the story of the World Youth Days

o tell the story of the World Youth Days is like describing a great mirac l e which has unfolded for almost three decades of history. It was 1985 when Pope John Paul II had the idea to create a meeting with all the young people of the world, even if he never wanted to be considered its founder (“The young people have created them” he would repeat many times). Following the first edition in Rome in 1985, two years later it took place in Argentina in Buenos Aires and at the end of the 1980s the pilgrims found themselves in Spain in the shadow of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. An event which, for the first time, is held in summer rather than on Palm Sunday. In 1991 it was Poland’s turn to host the meeting. With the fall of the communist block Czestochowa welcomed pilgrims from all over the world. Each time everything is perfected: in 1993, in Denver (USA), the Stations of the Cross are introduced for the first time and the event begins to achieve media importance. The explo-

sion occurred in Manila (Philippines) in 1995. In the Asian country, which has a Catholic majority, 5 million people welcomed Pope Wojtyla. In 1997 and in 2000 it is Europe's turn: Paris and three years later the Great Jubilee in Rome. Over two million people flock to the level ground of Tor Vergata to pray with the Pope. With the start of the new century it is Canada to host the event; in a world which is still shaken by the fall of the Twin Towers, the young people give all their af-

fection to a Pope, who is already very ill. Following the death of John Paul II it will be Pope Benedict XVI to continue the journey and host the pilgrims in his native Germany. With the WYD in Cologne in 2005 the theme is referred to the Magi, whose reliquaries are supposed to be preserved in the city crossed by the Rhine. Three years later it will be Sydney (Australia) to welcome the young people and, finally, in 2011 the Spanish capital saw the invasion of two million young people. In the years when there is no international World Youth Day the meeting is organised at diocesan level with different national initiatives. The period in which it is celebrated also changes: Palm Sunday.

“We will give life to the missionary task”

O

JULY 2013

Father Francisco Palacios gives an account of his experience of the last World Days

n 21st August 2011, at Cuatro Vientos airport, the Eucharistic celebration officiated by who is now the Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI had just ended, when the same communicated the following message to two million people who had arrived from 193 different countries: “It is with great joy that I announce that the World Youth Day 2013 will be held in Rio de Janeiro..” Twentythree months have passed since then, and we are now very close to this new W Y D , the theme of which is: “Go and make disciples of all nations” from the Gospel according to Matthew, 28,19.

To have the opportunity to participate, collaborate and become a tool so that this day is transmitted to the Radio Maria stations of the five continents, to reach all those young people who cannot be present in Rio, is something which I would never have imagined

THE PRECEDING WYDs For the second time a World Youth Day takes place in South America. The first time was in 1987, when the event was organised in Argentina and saw the participation of 1 million young people from all over the world in Buenos Aires.

to be able to do when I took part for the first time in a WYD, which was held in Argentina that year.

It was 1986 when the Beatified John Paul II announced that the next world youth meeting would be held in Argentina. It was the first time that this event was held outside Italy, and the second visit of the Beatified Pope to the most southerly country of Latin America.

So, in April 1987, with the motto “we ourselves h a v e known and put our faith in God’s love towards ourselves” (1Jn 4,16) more than a million people arrived to the appointment with John Paul II. Those days obviously had a different structure and dynamic from those of today, which are enriched by catechism, musical and many other events.

During one of the celebrations officiated by John Paul II, a little before the end, there was a change in the programme: the Pope called all the concelebrating priests to him, to greet us one by one. It was an extraordinary moment. I was a young priest at the time and, on taking the hand of the Holy Father, felt not only his closeness, but also the need of being confirmed in Faith; of being, through him, in communion with the Church of Jesus. 16 years have passed since that meeting, and today, to-

gether with an editorial team of members of different Radio Maria stations in the world, I am preparing to participate in the Rio day, which will have a highly missionary spirit. In this way we will give life to the missionary task which Pope Francis attributed to the World Family during the blessing on 11th May this year: “.. I encourage all the people of good will from the 65 countries of the world in the 5 continents which participate in these missionary days".

We invite all listeners and users of the Radio Maria website to join us with their prayer, so that the Great Communicator, the Holy Spirit, may ignite our hearts, and we can respond with and like Mary to the missionary call of Jesus. “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28,19).
