VITTORIO VICCARDI WFRM PRESIDENT

Therefore we are here once again to explain some of the activities and the results we had last year. I believe you will find relevant and comprehensive information in this Annual Report. Here let me just underline some of the most important lines of work that World Family of Radio Maria carried out in 2016. First of all our commitment to spread the voice of the Gospel by supporting Associations that are partners in our projects continued in all the continents. In particular our attention is towards Africa and Asia, where we invest a consistent amount of our energies both with personnel involved in several projects and activities that we implemented, in particular training and formation. A particular attention is given to those people who are victim of conflicts and are forced to flee their

of many people who are troubled by war and political and economic instability. On the other hand we keep on supporting projects to develop communication for development and its means and skills. In fact also in 2016 we dedicated resources to the improvement of technical infrastructures and progress in the poor countries, where our partners are beneficiaries of our know how in technical, editorial and management areas. The implementation of 3 years plan 2016-2018 was the main focus of our Organization. Support projects of human formation, peace building through the importance of local

communication especially in conflict areas were some of the most important goals of the 2016. The Year of Mercy gave us important guidelines that we received directly from His Holiness Pope Francis in October 2015 in Vatican City during a private audience with delegates of all our associated members from more than sixty countries. This is what our organization, our staff and our many volunteers keep on doing every day in several parts of the world. This is what we want to highlight in this Annual Report and great part of our effort during 2016. Enjoy reading Vittorio Viccardi, WFRM President

Introduction and methodological note

D

uring the year 2016, World Family of Radio Maria Onlus continued to work following the guidelines and the plans established during the Conference of Radio Maria delegates (Directors and Presidents) held in October 2015, which constitute a kind of three years road map and that will be verified in the next conference in 2018.

at the service of partner associations on an ongoing basis. They are in particular the satellite service and the streaming service which allow many of local no profit beneficiaries to produce local news and develop their local culture in their local languages in several parts of their countries.

The activities that our organization carries on are divided in two main areas: activity projects and strategic services projects. With activity projects we intend all those activities which have specific objectives to be realized in In 2016 WF was defined areas with particular involved in 54 partners in a projects with a definite time frame. Most of wide range of our resources activities: training, are dedicated the activity realization of social to projects that in and educational 2016 were 54 programs, in 51 countries. As strategic technical services instead assistance, etc. we mean those activities that World Family implements 5

The year 2016 saw our organization committed in 54 projects with a wide range of activities: from management assistance to develop new and old networks, to training journalists; from supporting realization of social and educational programs, to professional formation of media operators. The project with Saint Augustine University in Tanzania was interested by a remarkable growth: a pilot course in Peace Journalism done in Songea during 2015 has been transformed in a proper course which in 2016 was made compulsory for students attending the Bachelor in Mass Communication.

An important project was in Liberia to enforce a local Association in collaboration with important local partners as the Diocese of Monrovia: World Family contributed to renovate and strengthen the possibility of information and formation through a new media covering not only Monrovia but also neighboring cities.

Radio Mariam the web radio in Arabic language born at the end of 2015 had a sudden development in terms of listenership and participations from several countries especially in the Middle East. Our local partners requested our support in order to provide services in the refugee camps in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda and to sensitize the population about refugees’ life conditions. History & Identity of the World Family of Radio Maria Onlus

T

he World Family of Radio Maria ONLUS is an association with its registered office in Via Rusticucci 13, 00193 Rome. Its main operational offices are located in Via Mazzini 12, 21020 Casciago (VA).

MISSION OF WORLD FAMILY To assist and help, through its own services, the diffusion of the Radio Maria project throughout the world, specifically providing assistance to developing countries in order to create a local organizational culture within the scope of the means of communication and their related activities.

Since the beginning members of World Family of Radio Maria are associations from several countries which share the same mission of serving people by providing radio programs that are a source of spiritual and human growth. Each year new local associations request for membership to World Family, that’s why the number of members keeps on increasing. Nowadays World Family has also the task of following the various radios in four fundamental areas: editorial production, associative and administrative management, promotion and dissemination. Besides, it works with other organizations in developing projects and activities in developing countries to improve the life of their people. Its presence in the panorama of international cooperation has always underlined the importance of good communication for the development

of an integral human being. In 2008 such commitment has granted to World Family of Radio Maria the membership to ECOSOC, Economic and Social Council at United Nation, a consultative organ of the UN formed by Non for profit and Non-Governmental Organizations serving people in different parts of the world. In the same year due to the high commitment in Africa, World Family has opened an office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and gave life to the sister organization World Family of Radio Maria Africa to support the African radios with training, technical assistance, administration 7

Fr. Livio Fanzaga, WFRM Directors Advisor services and fund raising formation and tools. Later a similar office was opened in New York, USA and Guatemala for the American partners. In the recent past World Family has started to cooperate with Universities by supporting them in training journalists and students interested in communication to become communication agents for peace. In Tanzania a course in Peace Journalism has already started and it will be exported to other developing countries. Not only with public universities, but also with the Pontifical ones. In fact recently a collaboration with Institute John Paul II for studies on Marriage and Family in Benin has been explored and it will develop in the next future, to spread knowledge and values related to family issues in most of the African countries

by a wide network of radios. During the course of 2016, World Family had a total income of € 6.410.153 net of variation in inventories. The Association has a workforce of 22 employees and some consultants. It also has 82 volunteers who are involved in several activities in Italy and abroad. According to the article 2 of the Bylaws of the World Family of Radio Maria Onlus: “The purpose of the association is exclusively to achieve social solidarity in the areas of cooperation for development and international solidarity. These goals are pursued in the context of the “Radio Maria” through radio broadcasting, this project has the aim of protecting and affirming the dignity of human rights, support peace processes, postconflict stabilisation and strengthening of democratic institutions by affirming the uniqueness and 8

centrality of the human person, bearer of inalienable rights. The association intends to pursue its objectives in the areas of cooperation for development and international solidarity through: - training and vocational education, for people in developing countries in order to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities by promoting development focused on the centrality of the human person; - planning and implementing of structures, research and exchange of experiences to disseminate the ‘Radio Maria’ project throughout the world; - supporting the social and cultural growth of the countries in which it operates, by promoting their social, cultural and religious values in order to improve coexistence and develop human resources with the help of radio broadcasts and advertising of specific local events”; The Association thus operates in the cultural and socio-educational sector, as well as in

the sector of professional training, health protection and prevention, agriculture and environment. It pursues its aims through two main areas: ~ The socio–cultural–educational area through the implementation of communication projects aimed at development ~ The professional training area through the implementation of technical training projects in the field of social communication. ~ The support initiatives to face crisis and/or emergencies especially availing know-how about telecommunications The recipients of such activities are mainly local organizations in over 50 countries, most of them are developing in Africa, Latin America, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. 

T

he main stakeholders of the World Family of Radio Maria are the Associations that share the same purpose of World Family and work with her to realize her mission. They are 79, distributed in 72 countries, roughly 50 of them

are in developing countries. Many of the local NGOs and not-for-profit associations, initially set up as counterparts in World Family’s projects, have enhanced their partnership over time and shared with World Family the ideal inspiration and work method, thus originating an informal

network that is basically located in the southern regions of the world and in transition countries. Most of the Associations that belong to the network have also become members of World Family, to confirm the existing deep bond and collaboration. Other direct stakeholders are the personnel (22) and the volunteers (82) of World Family of Radio Maria. They make possible all the activities that we carry out in every country World Family is called to operate. A different type of stakeholders are the Dioceses and Parishes that are in contact with our associate partners and that work to implement locally the projects in which World Family is involved, as well as local NGOs and associations that cooperate with our partners in developing countries. All those are not directly involved in our projects but they have an interest in their implementation.

11

STAKEOHLDERS’ MAP AND INVOLVEMENT IN MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES

The main stakeholders are contacted and their involvement is solicited through a monthly newsletter which is also published on the Association’s website. Besides, an annual institutional meeting and few periodical continental meetings for informational and training purposes are held, at least an annual report and a magazine-type publication are published (“Miracle of Volunteers”). A different type of stakeholders are the Dioceses and Parishes that are in contact with our associate partners and that work to implement locally the projects in which World Family is involved, as well as local NGOs, local Universities and Associations and some Governmental Institutions that cooperate with our partners in developing countries. They are involved in editorial activities in Rome where they support the staff in producing radio programs, reports and documents for our partners in the world. In Casciago volunteers assist in administrative and logistic work. In particular their contribute is extremely valuable when delegations from abroad visit WF headquarter, when they are in charge of

welcoming the delegates and assure their staying is enjoyable. Among the Associations that are members of World Family, the Chairmen and the members of the Board are all volunteers. The volunteers in Italy always attend the convivial holiday events held at the headquarters, especially during Christmas, while for the ones abroad there are some regional meetings organized according to the needs.
