WORLD FAMILY OF RADIO MARIA ONLUS ANNUAL REPORT 2017

1 Letter of the President

W

e prepared this annual report in its seventh edition keeping in mind that those who support World Family of Radio Maria Onlus activities have the right to know the effect of their sacrifice. World Family of Radio Maria Onlus intends to fulfil the sense of responsibility which comes from serving people worldwide through partnerships with local associations, and from receiving contributions and support from people and institutions of good will in several countries in the world. Therefore it is our responsibility to show what we do and how we do it. This is the reason why we prepared this Annual Report and we invite you to go through it, hoping to provide understandable and useful information about our activities and results. Wo r l d Fa m i l y o f R a d i o M a r i a O n l u s perseveres the belief that promoting local culture needs to ensure the development of human being in its universal rights and values and plays an essential role wherever development is at stake. Countries and societies can develop only if people who are part of them develop as well and communication could play an important training role. Personal and spiritual growth are essential component of the development process of any entity. Efforts are directed to ensure that our partners can communicate freely

and properly in order for people to grow and develop. It is with that in mind that we invested even in 2017 energy, time and funds in planning and developing digital tools that our partners may use t o k e e p o n communicating to their VITTORIO VICCARDI WFRM PRESIDENT listeners and followers in a state-of-the-art way, even where economic and social circumstances make it generally more difficult. The digital tools World Family of Radio Maria Onlus developed are used by many associations in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latina America and also in East Europe, assisting them to reach millions of people with their message of peace, respect, brotherhood and responsible citizenship. During the year considered in this report, the

commitment in Africa and in Asia continued tirelessly. Furthermore it caused an expansion of activities in new countries with significant stakeholders as more local Dioceses and associations requested for a partnership with World Family of Radio Maria Onlus. Such partnerships will be object of our work in the following years. It is the case of countries like Lesotho, Angola and Nazareth (Israel) , where already our staff have being working on studies which showed the feasibility of projects with will be realized.

the ways in which it contributes to improve the world in observance of the principles of the Church and of the international cooperation for development. Every year World Family of Radio Maria Onlus is called by more and more local associations to work together to improve and expand the service they offer to benefit needed people. Since its foundation World Family of Radio Maria Onlus is engaged with many projects in Developing Countries, with several no profit partners mostly Ngos on the fields. In the last years like in 2017, our work was particularly oriented to the regions of the World with dramatic conflicts: we really respond to the call from local population and communities by helping institutions, working directly with local Catholic Dioceses.

Capacity building, technical infrastructure providing, administration assistance, juridical support are some of the important services that World Family of Radio Maria Onlus provides to local organizations, and they are

All such services empower our partners and permit them to optimize costs: in fact the total cost is lower as suppliers have contract directly with World Family on behalf of several associations that benefit from those services. A new radio joined the family in 2017: it is

The activities that World Family of Radio Maria Onlus carries on are divided in two main areas: activity projects and strategic services projects. With activity projects we intend all those activities which have specific objectives to be realized in defined areas with particular partners in a definite time frame. Most of our resources are dedicated to the activity projects that in 2017 were 58 in 47 countries. Instead strategic services are activities that World Family implements at the service of partner associations on an ongoing basis. Those are the satellite service and the streaming service which allow many of our partner radios to broadcast in several parts of their countries via satellite and all over the world via streaming, and the technical

3 History & Identity of the World Family of Radio Maria Onlus

T

he World Family of Radio Maria ONLUS is an association with its registered office in Via Rusticucci 13, 00193 Rome. In 2017 its main operational offices have been moved from Via Mazzini 12, 21020 Casciago (VA) to via Valassina 40, Erba (Como). It was founded and registered in Italy in 1998 as a non-profit association to help people from several countries in the world to develop locally the Radio Maria project. In fact the management of Radio Mara Italy was receiving many requests from Bishops, clergy and lay people to have Radio Maria in their country. In the spirit of being missionaries they registered World Family of Radio Maria with the specific task to respond to such calls and work with local partners to implement their radio for Evangelization and development. Since the beginning members of World Family of Radio Maria are associations from several countries which share the same mission of serving people by providing radio programs that are a source of spiritual and human growth. Each year new local associations request for membership to World Family, that's why the number of members keeps on increasing. World Family's activity has the fundamental task of following the various radios in four fundamental areas: editorial production,

MISSION OF WORLD FAMILY To assist and help, through its own services, the diffusion of the Radio Maria project throughout the world, specifically providing assistance to developing countries in order to create a local organizational culture within the scope of the means of communication and their related activities. associative and administrative management, promotion and dissemination. Besides, it works with other organizations in developing projects and activities in developing countries to improve life of people. Its presence in the panorama of international cooperation has always underlined the importance of good communication for the development of an integral human being. In 2008 such commitment has granted to World Family of Radio Maria the membership to ECOSOC, Economic and Social Council at United Nation, a consultative organ of the UN formed by Non for profit and NonGovernmental Organizations serving people in different parts of the world. In the same year due to the high 7

commitment in Africa, World Family has opened an office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and gave life to the sister organization World Family of Radio Maria Africa to support the African radios with training, technical assistance, administration services and fund raising formation and tools. Later a similar office was opened in New York, USA and Guatemala for the American partners. In the recent past World Family has started to cooperate with Universities by supporting them in training journalists and students interested in communication to become communication agents for peace. In Tanzania a course in Peace Journalism has already started and it will be exported to other developing countries. Not only with public universities, but also with the Pontifical ones. In fact recently a collaboration with Institute John Paul II for studies on Marriage and Family in Benin has been started and it will develop in the next future, to spread knowledge and values

related to family issues in most of the African countries by a wide network of radios. During the course of 2017, World Family had a total income of € 7.412.071 net of variation in inventories. The Association has a workforce of 20 employees and some consultants. It also has 83 volunteers who are involved in several activities in Italy and abroad. This principle is contained in the corporate purpose, in article 2 of the Bylaws, which states: “The purpose of the association is exclusively to achieve social solidarity in the areas of cooperation for development and international solidarity. These goals are pursued in the context of the “Radio Maria” through radio broadcasting, this project has the aim of protecting and affirming the dignity of human rights, support peace processes, postconflict stabilisation and strengthening of 8

The association intends to pursue its objectives in the areas of cooperation for development and international solidarity through: - training and vocational education, for people in developing countries in order to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities by promoting development focused on the centrality of the human person; - planning and implementing of structures, research and exchange of experiences to disseminate the “Radio Maria” project throughout the world; - supporting the social and cultural growth of the countries in which it operates, by promoting their social, cultural and religious values in order to improve coexistence and develop human resources with the help of radio broadcasts and advertising of specific local events”;

It pursues its aims through three main areas: - The socio–cultural–educational area through the implementation of communication projects aimed at development - The professional training area through the implementation of technical training projects in the field of social communication. - The support initiatives to face crisis and/or emergencies especially availing knowhow about telecommunications The recipients of such activities are mainly local organizations in over 50 countries, most of them are developing in Africa, Latin America, Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia. The Association operates according to codes of conduct that consolidated through the years, and specifically with no commercial, advertising or sponsorship contribution whatsoever.

The Association thus operates in the cultural and socio-educational sector, as well as in the sector of professional training, health protection and prevention, agriculture and

he main stakeholders of the World Family of Radio Maria are the Associations that share the same purpose of World Family and work with her to realize her mission. They are 80, distributed in 74 countries, roughly 50 of them are in

developing countries. Many of the local NGOs and not-for-profit associations, initially set up as counterparts in World Family's projects, have enhanced their partnership over time and shared with World Family the ideal inspiration and work method, thus originating an informal

activities realized by World Family of Radio Maria Onlus in every country it is called to operate are possible because of their commitment, effort and generosity. A different type of stakeholders are the Dioceses and Parishes that are in contact with our associate partners and that work to implement locally the projects in which World Family is involved, as well as local NGOs and associations that cooperate with our partners in developing countries. All those are not directly involved in our projects but they have an interest in their implementation.

The main stakeholders are contacted and their involvement is solicited through a monthly newsletter which is sent via email and is published on the Association's website. Besides, an annual institutional meeting and few periodical continental meetings for informational and training purposes are held, at least an annual report and a magazine-type publication are published (“Miracle of Volunteers”).

For the redaction of this 2017 Annual Report only the stakeholders included in the first and second layers of the map have been contacted, with the proposal of expanding the involvement to the rest in the next edition of this document with modalities that are to be established by the management.

Other direct stakeholders are the personnel (20) , the collaborators, the consultants and the volunteers (82) of World Family of Radio Maria Onlus. They make possible all the
