DENMARK A COUNTRY DESIGNED FOR SHIPS, A PEOPLE DEDICATED TO GUESTS One look at the shape of Denmark says it all: This is a country designed for ships, abundant with adventures and experiences. As an old seafaring nation, Denmark’s towns and cities are spread out with their ports as centre – this is still true today. When a ship calls in a Danish port, you’re right in the heart of the city. From any port along the Danish coastline, you’re always within easy access to any sight or experience you feel like exploring – inland included. Denmark is a safe, tiny country with a great history, and a country that offers true variety: Be amazed by world-class art or striking, unique natural phenomenons, browse the latest trends in elegant shops, and explore Denmark’s modern take on architecture, arts and design.

P. 4 Cruising Denmark 2014

Adventures include witnessing the unique meeting of two seas at Skagen, cruising the fairy tale beauty of the Funen Archipelago, visiting the stunning Utzon Center, perusing a 1000 year old Viking Castle, sampling gourmet food and much more. Don’t miss out on visiting Hans Christian Andersen’s childhood home where he hid under bushes as a boy and wrote, the oohs and aahs of numerous fairy tales. See the various renaissance and rococo castles, relax at the golf courses with splendid views, strol on white sandy beaches or visit the Queens regal home: Amalienborg Palace and tiptoe through exquisite rooms and banquet halls, still in use to this day. Denmark is the world’s oldest monarchy, and Queen Margrethe II is a direct descendant of Gorm the Old (Gorm Den Gamle - 900 AD). No other royal family dates back this far.

DID YOU KNOW? Fun facts about Denmark: • Viking King Leif Ericson was officially recognized as the Discoverer of America in 1925 by U.S. President Calvin Coolidge. King Leif and his ship landed in “Vinland” (New Foundland) around the year 999 AD – app. 500 years before Columbus. Spectacular Viking ships and ancient Viking sights are accessible from the Danish cruise ports. • Queen Margrethe II is lovingly called “Daisy” by her husband, family, and friends. She is named after her grandmother, British Princess Margaret, later Swedish Queen. The French name Marguerite means Daisy.

Denmark has a population of only five and a half million, but many world famous sons and daughters mark this tiny country’s greatness: Authors Hans Christian Andersen and Karen Blixen (a.k.a. Isak Dinesen), Nobel Prize Winner physicist Niels Bohr, artists Anna and Michael Ancher, Asger Jorn, Hammershøi, Olafur Eliasson, architect Jørn Utzon, who designed the famous Sydney Opera House, and plenty more. Works, homes and artifacts from all the famous Danes can be seen on the varied excursions. Many of Denmark’s guests have one “experience” they all agree is a true treasure: The people they meet; the Danes. Their easy-going, yet efficient, open-minded, yet respectful manner has made the Danes themselves an attraction. The Danes tend to travel a lot themselves so they know the importance of a warm welcome. Don‘t be afraid to ask for directions – you’ll probably end up having a nice chat with the locals. Denmark welcomes you to its shores, in its historic towns, cosy villages and picturesque landscapes: Explore the blue waters and the green hills, enjoy the regal splendour of castles, the pretty hollyhocks, and get to know these friendly people. Denmark: A country designed for ships, people dedicated to guests.

• Hollywood has its own Danish flavours: Stars Viggo Mortensen and Connie Nielsen are Danish – and so is Scarlett Johansson’s father. • The mobile phone application “Bluetooth” is named after Viking King Harald Bluetooth. Trelleborg Castle, his home, is close to destination port Kalundborg. • Danish gastronomy is thriving: Copenhagen restaurant Noma has claimed the title of World’s Best Restaurant in Restaurant Magazine three years in a row, and a host of Michelin stars are twinkling above Denmark’s eateries. • Football (Soccer) is Denmark’s national sport, and to almost every Danish boy – and many girls – the sport is a major part of their childhood. In 1992, Denmark won the European Football Championship, and Denmark boasts an impressive roster of world famous players, among these are legendary Michael Laudrup (former player for F.C. Barcelona and Real Madrid) and Peter Schmeichel (former Manchester United). Peter Schmeichel has been crowned as the World’s Best Goalkeeper not once, but twice. • The Vikings sailed most of the North Atlantic, North Africa, Russia, and the Middle East. England and Scotland were under Viking reign. To this day, the Scottish word for spider is “edderkop”. Which is, still, what a spider is called in Denmark.

GREEN DENMARK DENMARK IS CLEAN, FRESH AND GREEN Denmark is a pioneering country when it comes to ecology, organic food and environmental issues. Denmark is clean, fresh and green – and there are plenty of opportunities to explore this: Take a simple stroll through a green town centre, enjoy the lush lawns and clean air in one of the many leafy parks, relish local, tasty and fresh produce, bathe in the clean water – yes, it’s even that clean by the city waterfront. Denmark has always been first movers on large scale environmental projects, e.g. The Danish windmill energy giant, VESTAS, and on a smaller scale you’ll find everyday Danes making everyday choices, starting everyday initiatives: Organic, urban gardens, even on rooftops, are thriving, thousands of Danes are bicycling to work, plenty of green areas in the cities, clean water in the tap, and along the entire 7314 km coastline. Denmark is green – refreshingly green.

CLASSIC AND GROUND– BREAKING DANISH DESIGN Danish Design is legendary: U.S. President John F. Kennedy was famously photographed sitting in the iconic chair ”The Chair” - by Danish designer Hans J. Wegner. When President Obama visited Copenhagen, he asked for that very same chair. Other Design legends include Arne Jacobsen, Kaare Klint and of course world famous architect Jørn Utzon, who designed the Sydney Opera House. Today, contemporary Danish Design is sparkling and cutting edge: Architect Bjarke Ingels (BIG) has won a string of prestigious awards with his rounded, modern architecture and Danish designers of furniture, fashion and jewellery are forever winning awards and international fame. Find unique design items in flagship stores, see the award winning buildings, design museums and much more throughout Denmark. Classic and groundbreaking, great beauty, excellent materials: All exquisitely done – and it’s everywhere you look. 2014 Cruising Denmark P. 17
