Following the meeting, the Academy hosted a panel titled “The Future of Iconic US Channels Around the World,” moderated by Anna Carugati, Group Editorial Director, WSN INC., Editor, World Screen, and featuring speakers Simon Sutton, President,
HBO International & Content Distribution; Greg Moyer, Chief Creative Officer, Scripps Networks International; Steve Ronson, Executive Vice President, Enterprises, A+E Networks; and Bruce Tuchman, President, AMC/Sundance Channel Global Networks.
Steve Ronson “The way we do it, is that we take a global footprint of content and we marry it with a local patine, so that blend, especially for channels like History or Crime & Investigation or Bio become very powerful, (…) and that seems to be a formula that works.”
Bruce Tuchman “The consumers are not going to be as difficult (…) as long as that they don’t have to pay extra for it. That becomes the challenge for the platform operators, particularly in the difficult economic times that we face.”
Simon Sutton “Launching traditional channels now is a real challenge, you have to have an angle, you have to be prepared to spend a lot of money and have an entrée- and I think for HBO our entrée is our original programming, which really stands on its own.”
Greg Moyer “Most of the markets that we are entering today are expecting a high quality digital service at relatively low cost in high definition with some kind of a commitment to regionalizing beyond just simply language dubbing or subtitles.”

INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES
President’s Report Despite political and financial crosscurrents around the world, 2011 has turned out to be another excellent year for The International Academy. Our worldwide Emmy competitions are robust, our membership is strong and growing, and we continue to increase the number and geographic locations of Academy sponsored events. In the early fall, we announced future locations for one of our most popular activities, International Academy Day. In April 2012, an Academy Day will be held in Hong Kong, hosted by Phoenix Satellite Television. We have scheduled another for June 2014 in Rio de Janeiro to coincide with the World Cup. Our host for Rio will be TV Globo.
O
ur board meetings this year were held in New York in March and in Los Angeles in September. The host for the March board meeting was News Corporation’s Jonathan Miller, Chairman & CEO of News Corp.’s Digital Media Group and a director of the Academy. The panel discussion on “The Evolving Media Landscape” was both fascinating and timely, and you will see a more detailed report on it elsewhere in this Almanac. The Los Angeles board meeting took place at CBS in par tnership with The Bold and the Beautiful, one of the last surviving soap operas on US television. The location and the sponsorship provided an oppor tunity for an in-depth exploration of the future of daytime television, both in the U.S. and around the world. It is a sign of the vibrancy and quality of the international television business that the Academy now runs three different International Emmy competitions: Digital, News, and, of course, the Emmys we celebrate at our Gala in November. This year we had over 1,000 entries for these competitions. Starting in 2013, we will launch a separate International Emmy Kids competition and awards ceremony. Based on support we are already getting, we think this will be a most popular and worthwhile addition to our Emmy calendar. Two highlights of my personal year as President were trips to India and China on behalf of the Academy. In February, I visited India to meet with representatives of the Indian media community and to raise awareness of the Academy and the International Emmy. Subhash Chandra, the founder of India’s Zee channel, the recipient of this year’s Directorate Emmy, is the first Indian so honored, and he represents a country that has emerged as a major player on the world stage. Twenty years ago, when he started Zee, such a development was scarcely imaginable. The only television in India was state controlled and there was no private 4

industry in the media sector. But Subhash both led the way and rode the wave to a remarkable transformation of the media in one of the largest countries on earth. It was a special privilege to have an overview of all of this. In March, I was pleased to attend Phoenix Satellite Television’s 15th anniversar y celebration at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing and to receive an award from Phoenix on behalf of the Academy. Phoenix and its chairman, Liu Changle, have been steadfast suppor ters of the Academy and our activities throughout my presidency, and I am deeply grateful for their help. for tunes of our growing and ever more relevant organization. I par ticularly want to thank Fred Cohen, our Chairman; Simon Sutton and Blair Westlake, respectively our Secretar y and Treasurer ; and Larr y Gershman, Rainer Siek and Jim Rosenfield, the heads of our standing committees. Ralph Baruch and Kevin Beggs have also provided invaluable service to the organization. Camille BidermannRoizen, our Senior Vice President and Executive Director, leads a ver y professional staff which does more and better work than anyone could reasonably expect from such a small group. Our colleagues at the TV Academy in Los Angeles, John Shaffner and Alan Perris, and at the National Television Academy in New York, Malachy Wienges, Carolyn Grippi and Herb Granath, have been helpful and suppor tive whenever we have asked. Finally, I want to thank Frank A. Bennack, Jr., the Chief Executive Officer of Hearst Corporation. Frank’s suppor t makes possible many of my activities with the Academy and helped us cover the cost of moving into our gleaming new headquar ters on 52nd street. Frank is a visionary leader, and I and the Academy are indebted to him. The years ahead will surely be challenging. We sit astride and par ticipate in a world and an industr y in tumultuous change. But as a good friend of mine once said, “There is always better fishing in troubled waters,” and if we are well informed, attentive and imaginative, our catch will be great. It is the mission of the International Academy to enable its members to do exactly that. 5

Subhash Chandra The International Emmy Directorate Award is presented to Subhash Chandra, Chairman of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) and founder of the Essel Group of Companies. Among the leading lights of the Indian media industry, Chandra revolutionized India’s television industry in 1992 by launching the country’s first satellite Hindi channel, ZEE TV. Today, the ZEE Network is the largest producer and aggregator of Hindi programming in the world with over 100,000 hours of content, over 3,000 movie titles, 25 channels and 17 international beams, with over 600 million viewers in 167 countries.
R
eferred to as “The Chairman,” Chandra is a media mogul who has consistently demonstrated his ability to identify new businesses and lead them to the path to success. In the U.S., ZEE TV is the leader in the South Asian entertainment space with the largest number of channels by any South Asian broadcaster (nine channels in total) and the first to be Nielsen rated. A passionate health and wellness lifestyle proponent, The Chairman founded and launched Veria Living in 2007—the world’s first comprehensive multimedia platform exclusively showcasing wellness programming and related content in America and beyond. Veria Living and Veria.com offer the world’s largest lineup of first-run, original HD programming, connecting viewers in a contemporary and accessible manner to the benefits and joys of living a healthy lifestyle. The Chairman’s mark on the global media industry goes far beyond creating popular channels and great programs. He also founded Dish TV, the largest and fastest growing satellite television platform in India with more than 11 million subscribers and growing at a dramatic pace. South Asia is one of the most robust regions for growth in the world and Chandra’s enormous contributions in the media space have left an indelible mark on the emerging New India and perhaps the world. Subhash Chandra is also an influential philanthropist in India. He has created TALEEM (Transnational Alternate Learning for Emancipation and Empowerment through Multimedia) to provide access to quality education through distance and open learning. He is also the Chairman of the Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India—a movement to eradicate illiteracy from rural and tribal India. The Foundation provides free education to nearly 80,000 tribal children across 27,000 villages. He is also the moving force behind the Global Vipassana Foundation, a trust set up to help people raise their spiritual quotient. As a firm believer in the concept of Karma, Chandra’s actions are not performed with a selfish motive. He believes that the key to happiness is to take success in your stride and not 6
be depressed when you fail. “Just keep doing your Karma” is his mantra — a true Karma Yogi indeed! The Academy is honored to award the 2011 Directorate Award to The Chairman, Mr. Subhash Chandra.

igel Lythgoe is the CEO of Nigel Lythgoe Productions, a newly formed company with 19 Entertainment and the successor to his previous production entity, Big Red 2 Entertainment. Lythgoe most recently served as president of 19 Television, and prior his tenure there worked at London Weekend Television, where he was Controller of Entertainment and Comedy. Born in 1949, Mr. Lythgoe developed an interest in dance at an early age. His first professional job was with the corps de ballet for the national tour of “The Merry Widow,” and he later went on to choreograph the BBC’s Young Generation dance troupe for more than 500 shows. He became the only person to dance in, choreograph, direct, and produce the Royal Variety Performance for Her Majesty the Queen of England. He has worked with stars such as Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, Shirley Bassey and, most prestigiously, the Muppets, and while at London Weekend Television, he commissioned and produced hit shows such as Gladiators and Blind Date. In 2000 Mr. Lythgoe earned himself the nickname “Nasty Nigel” as a judge on hit show Popstars before leaving for Bob Geldof ’s television company Planet 24, where he executive produced and directed the U.K. version of Survivor. Additionally, he developed and produced the TV phenomenon Pop Idol. Lythgoe has been a driving force in the world of performing arts as the executive producer of the TV juggernaut American Idol, which has been nominated for nearly 60 Emmy Awards, and “Idol Gives Back,” which raised more than $140 million for charity and in 2007 received the prestigious Governors Award, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ highest honor. Lythgoe also served as producer and director of the acclaimed Celine Dion/Elvis Presley duet featured in the special. He is the co-creator and executive producer of the multiple Emmy Award-winning series So You Think You Can Dance. Additionally, he executive produced NBC’s Superstars of Dance and Fox’s Carrie Underwood: An All-Star Holiday Special. In 2010, he took So You Think You Can Dance to the U.K., where he reprised his role as judge, and in 2011, he launched CMT’s Next Superstar along with his son, Simon. In the summer of 2009, the U.K.’s University of Bedfordshire awarded Lythgoe with an honorary Doctor of Arts for his outstanding contribution to the performing arts in television.
Lythgoe is actively involved with numerous charities, serving as the chairman of the British Academy of Film & Television Arts, Los Angeles, and as an honorary national vice president of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He also sits on the honorary board of Center Dance Arts at the Music Center Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County. And in 2009, Lythgoe joined forces with director Adam Shankman, Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba and actress Katie Holmes to found the Dizzy Feet Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to talented young dancers, works to elevate and standardize dance instruction in the U.S., and exposes youth in underprivileged communities to the joys of dance education. Lythgoe lives in Los Angeles. 7

Nadav Palti Chief Executive Officer and President Dori Media Group What does being the 2011 Gala Chair mean to you? I feel truly honored to have been selected, and looking back at the list of Gala Chairs in past years I am also humbled. The International Emmy has been an aspirational motor for the international content community for many years. It encourages excellence, gives exposure and opens doors to many international content creators and, by so doing, helps create a truly global industry. I am proud to become part of this 39-year-old tradition.
trying to be there among the firsts, with the right product and the right ideas. As we are in the heart of the change, and some of its results are still unknown, I believe Dori Media will have two major challenges: to develop the next generation of content at the right time and to expand our distribution arm to more platforms, through joint ventures and company acquisitions.
How important is the international marketplace for Dori Media? The international marketplace is our universe. Ten years ago we started as a local Israeli company, doing fairly well producing and operating channels for the small Israeli market. Very soon we realized that real growth can only be achieved by breaking the glass ceiling and expanding to the international market. We followed a strategic plan, first to produce outside of Israel, starting in Argentina, and then to form an independent distribution arm with presence in the US, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Israel. The next step was to create and operate thematic channels in the world. Five years later the plan worked and we were able to achieve the strategic goals we had set. These days we combine the production and distribution capabilities to maximize the well-known potential of the Israeli talent and creativity for the international marketplace. We also focus on developing and distributing worldwide multiplatform new-media formats. What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for Dori Media in the coming years? A lot has been said about the profound change that we as an industry and we as consumers are undergoing. Dori Media’s strategy has always called for constantly looking at the future of our industry and 8

Usually for me it’s Chairman & CEO, Media Link the other way around.. We are all going to learn something and get some insight from a great group of ket and Wall Street folks ask us about it every single chance folks. Starting furthest from me is Michael Kassan, who is the they get. I’ll start with you John. Will over the top video, in the chairman and founder of MediaLink. MediaLink advises many near future cause what is called cord cutting, a cutting of the different folks including News Corp. in terms of their brand cable cord and there will be less people paying for the full strategies and their marketing strategies. They work with many bundle of television channels that frankly is the majority of this of the big advertisers of the world, the big marketers of the company’s business? world, even some start ups and smaller companies. Next to him is Geoff Sands. Sands is head of the McKinsey media pracROSE: Yes. I think over the top video is going to be transformatice and also someone I’ve known for a long time and I am aptive but the discussion needs to move from cord cutting to a preciative of his insight for many years and in addition to his broader set of economic parameters. So two observations, one duties at McKinsey, you are on the board of Sundance, on the is the enabling part of OTV is going to be when web video shows board of The Paley Center, and you are chairman of the board up on TV set.The analogy back to my music life is there is no real of PBS. And a Channel Thirteen WNET board member. Next impact on the music industry created by peer to peer web comto me is John Rose, head of the media practice at BCG and panies or businesses like Napster in the period where the music formally also in the music industry which as we all know is was going to the PC. It was only until you could take the music off one of the industries that has been most affected by the the PC and use it in all of the ways you use music that there was whole digital revolution. John was at the forefront of that in his a really significant economic impact on the music industry. The running strategy of EMI and now more recently for BCG’s same is true for web video, yes there’s more than a billion people worldwide media practice. So with that, I wanted to start with who visit sites in any given month but as long as they’re watching what I think is the biggest question for the large media comit on the PC, there’s still this the occasion of watching it on your panies, certainly based in the United States, and I think one TV set that isn’t going to go away. What is changing over the next that will affect the world as a whole, which is what’s happen3 years is connected devices: whether they are TV sets, DVD/Bluing with web television and television and video on the interray players, game consoles that are web enabled and that allow net and how it is affecting the traditional television business. I you to go upstream to the web to stream video and watch that will tell you that at News Corp we think and talk about this video on a TV set and one of the CE manufacturers and manuall day, and in part we do it because we are rightfully trying to facturers of Blu-ray players in the United States is seeing a 46% atfigure out what’s going on and in part because the stock martachment rate on the DVD players they sell, attachment rate International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012

meaning those DVD players actually get connected to the web and connected to the TV set. The second thing that’s necessary is better navigation, right now the navigation meaning I have to write a widget, I have to negotiate with a CE manufacturer, things like Google TV In Vision is a software platform or tablets that speak to the DVD players and TV sets that allow you surf and navigate will change that experience. So over the next 3 years, probably 40% or more of US households will have some form of easily navigatable web connection to the TV set. It’s not just about cord cutters, we’ve done some in market proprietary research looking at consumer behavior as it relates to this.Yes there’s a cord cutter trend. Roughly 4% or 5% of the population in the last couple of years has cut the cord, but there are two other very important consumer segments. Probably most important is cord thinners, a group of people who are starting to watch video on their TV set, they still want to get
high def sports or whatever it is that they care about but the $75 to $120 they are paying for their cable, IPTV or satellite service is no longer valuable to them whether they shifted their movies, whether they shifted other ways of viewing to other channels as a result they are reducing and we saw a 19% net part of the population, net being cut of thinners versus those who are adding of people who are reducing their cable spend and then the last population are called nevers. They are people who are setting up their houses for the first time whether they are graduating from college or graduate school, or lived at home and are moving to their first apartment.Ten years ago the first thing that they got was a cable TV subscription, now the first thing that they have is their mobile subscription with a data plan, the second thing that they get is high speed data access at which point they are roughly $100 to $120 a month into infrastructural access for their lives. They then look at the entry point for cable television or satellite TV and at $50 a month, that’s an expense that some of them are deciding not to pursue, almost independent of the salaries they earn. So in one of the cable companies where we were having this conversation in sharing this research, the executive team found this notion of nevers as almost impossible to contemplate until two of the people sitting around the table who joined this company in the last two years and who got their high speed data from the company sort of sheepishly raised their hands and said you know, we didn’t subscribe to the video service. So yes, I think this is going to have profound implications on the video value chain.
“The real question is: are marketers ready to support video on the Internet at this point?” —Jonathan Miller
Academy member Gregg Moyer, President, Scripps Networks International

SANDS: I certainly agree with you and I’ll try to build on that. I think the question is not really is it going to happen but how quickly and to what extent and I think when you try to get your head around that, you see lots of data that at this point is inconclusive and in some cases contradictory. . So what we are looking for is markers, one of the things that we ought to observe in the market to tell us how pervasive cord cutting or cord shaving or cord thinning is, is going to be among which demographics and overall time period and how does that affect the overall economy in the video ecosystem. There are a couple things we are looking at. On the consumer side, it is very hard to tell because most of the research that you see is based on people telling you what they would do. So the same research on that 30% are subscribing to cable or telco video properties, 30% would consider cord shaving or downgrading their subscription or cord cutting all together, 30%. Pretty useless piece of data because it’s what most of them say they would do under these circumstances and that is probably not that helpful. What it tells to the cable companies is that it’s big enough to really start worrying about it if there’s that kind of intention and interest. When you talk about the impact so far, what does that tell you about the future? As John pointed out, you can have two very different conversations. If you talk to the cable operators about sub losses, most of them will say well you can’t read anything because it’s the economy over the last couple of International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012

years that has caused a lot of people to become more price sensitive and when the economy gets better all the people who downgraded their subscription and dropped their VOD or pay per view and got Netflix will come back. You can talk to young people who will say I’ve never had a cable subscription and I never will and the question is how big is that group going to be and how quickly. It takes a long time for that cohort to displace the other so the question is, are there things that will accelerate this behavior? They used to say Facebook was just a young person’s phenomenon and we saw how quickly that changed. So the consumer side of it is a bit murky at the moment and I know a lot of distributors are actually testing where they have a footprint in a college town. They are testing various kinds of offers, different bundles, different packages and Netflix, to try to understand what people will actually respond to and you can actually see research that says that a reasonable percent of people, 20% to 30%, have gone to a Netflix who considered coming back. When we talk about the device manufacturers; that can be quite interesting with the competition of many tablets, with the popularity of boxes like Vudu and Apple TV. A subscription service that does live streaming through Apple TV which has been talked about could be quite interesting because right now if you get Netflix, you get basic cable and your bill goes down and you can pretty much get everything except for sports and live events. Although you’re starting to be able to get those too. So any kind of agreement between any of the device manufacturers and the programmers under the right circumstances could be pretty compelling, so were going to watch those. Then you come back to the biggest swing factor in my view which is what do the programmers do? You pretty much have behavior all across the map and it seems to me, most of the atten26

tion when people talk about this is about the cool new devices or the distribution, but so much of this rests on what are the strategies of the programmers and there, you have ABC taking a very different approach than FOX than NBC and CBS and that’s where I think there’s a lot of value at risk. So watching these program deals and watching what they choose to make available on a service like Netflix, it could just be shows that have gone off the air like 24, or shows that were cancelled in the case of CBS like Medium or shows on a two week delay. It’s a very different value proposition and if they start creeping closer and closer to what people get from their cable subscription, that too could accelerate this, so I think the next 12 months if we really pay attention to those markers on the consumer side, the programming side, the distribution side, and the device side is going to be an interesting ride. KASSAN: I would like to just add something to that. I think the group you left out of that conversation were the marketers, International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012

and we just did this last week and I can speak to it very directly. We took Unilever, the second-largest marketer in the world, they spend $7.2 billion a year on marketing. We took them on a content journey, and the content journey involves spending time at News Corp and at Comcast NBC and at Time Warner. The discussion as we teed it up was interesting, because we reached out to the content creators and the networks and the organizations that we spoke to on behalf of Unilever and the responses we got from the people at the front-end was so interesting because one group said oh no our fall programming schedule isn’t ready and I said well that’s good because I’m not here to talk about your fall programming schedule. What we are going to talk about is the change in business model and the distribution and how a marketer that spends $7.2 billion a year on marketing, they wanted to change the conversation, they want to understand where they are going to fit into this ecosystem because they are the feeder at the end of the day and so the programmers and the CE manufacturers and these folks need to be looking at the marketers further upstream and getting their input.
cussions I was having with a private-equity firm around these trends, two of the guys who were again within two years of having graduated from business school and these guys earn lots of money, were using Boxee to drive their choice of what they watched on a 15-inch flat panel TV.The person who runs the media group at this particular privately owned [company] turned to them and said, but don’t you understand you’re breaking the law? To which they, looked at her and said,Wes. So I think there is this question of the speed at which an industry comes up with solutions.
MILLER: I just came back last night from Abu Dhabi where there was a media conference, but in addition we got together all our folks from News Corp and the different businesses in the Middle East. The film guys were talking about piracy and that they believe the market was essentially 95% piracy, so it really is a strong point. And that’s in addition to trying to think how would you open a film in Egypt right now, which is what they are dealing with. Let me move to another question, Michael I’m going to start with you on this. I’m unfortunately perhaps old enough to remember a couple different things in the industry. I remember ROSE: Just one element I want to add ... one of the other things right out of college, I was a researcher on cable TV in the United I think has to affect this is piracy. States for a brief while, in 1980, and And there is a discussion in the the question was, Should the federal community about what we are government help cable TV get liand aren’t going to allow happen censed in the cities. At that point it to the extent to which the pathwas just used for rural distant imporways exist and to the extent to tation of signals and I was looking at which there is a pirate version of the study and I thought, you know, if the content that you can access. they do this, which it looks like they The ability to define a business are going to do, there’s going to be a model will be lost by the probig opportunity for new channels to grammers and the distributors be created because there is going to who are having lots of interesting be all this now wider bandwith. how do I preserve my business There’s only four networks at the model debates. In one of the distime and a couple of local stations, what’s going to go down there? People are going to think of new channels, Then again when the satellites went up around the world, you’re thinking there’s going to be a whole bunch of new channels around the world because now they have the bandwidth in the sky. This CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in January, I felt, for the third time, and I thought now with the web we have Google trying to get organized through YouTube around channels, we have the Xbox just selling, the Xbox Kinect, selling as fast as they can make them, it’s a huge hit from Microsoft. So for the third time in my professional career, I got that feeling of, it’s going to happen again, there’s going to be now this opportunity for new channel creation. If you were going to say start a company like ViJohn Rose, Senior Partner and Managing Director, The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) acom, which is very strong in cable

television channels, I would probably tend to start on the web today. But we’ve also had false alarms before, so I wanted to ask the folks here what they were thinking, I was going to start with you Michael, because it seems to me just like you were saying about over the top video in general, you need the marketers’ support, you can’t do it without marketing support, so are marketers ready to support video on the Internet at this point? KASSAN: They are very much so and anxious to do it obviously. The hold back has been the metrics and the accountability. As much as we say the promise of online is that accountability and the metrics are going to be more precise, they are not there yet and once they get there, the floodgates will truly open. So I do believe the answer is yes to that.
“The biggest swing factor in my view is, what do the programmers do in this new environment?” —Geoff Sands
MILLER: So Geoff if someone came to you and said I want to start the next Viacom and they had a whole bunch of money, would you say you should buy an established media company that has a strong foothold in satellite channels or would you say take your money and start it on the web? SANDS: If I wanted to start a Viacom anew, I would go into China where you have real tailwind behind you to create new entertainment vehicles. I would go where the growth is. My point being you don’t have a lot of tailwinds in this market right now and it’s a slow growth market. Will the advertisers support new channels? Today, 25% or so of the time on cable networks and broadcast networks is monetized, that number for online videos is less than 2% and is the reason because the industry needs a while to catch up as they did with cable or is it because there are so much out there that you can’t aggregate an audience fast enough, the transactional costs are too high. Most of the research will tell you that people really gravitate towards anywhere between seven and a dozen channels. There are a lot of channels out there. If you take any individual channel, most of them are fighting very hard to generate enough advertising and marketing. 30
ROSE: Folks that have been able to take broad distribution, high version brands with consumer engagement and move them into other areas are more than able to jumpstart. The Food Network to the FoodNetwork.com is the prototypical example that everybody on the planet is starting to do. FoodNetwork.com is the dominant food website in the United States, it was undoubtedly much easier to get there because all of the traffic that you can drive millions of people who watch the Food Network, so there is incredible value in using traditional media assets to drive traffic to business models. So part of this is your time frame. The reason I probably wouldn’t go out and buy a fairly sizable company is, unless I was willing to take it private and keep it in a private environment so that I was able to do things with it that were not in a consistent earnings trajectory. It’s very hard in a public equity environment to sustain and make the kind of bets that you do have to make so if you pick a number, a quarter of a billion dollars or a billion dollars, whatever you want to put into this, very hard to put that into a set of PNL losing ventures that will lose money for a sustainable period of time. The other thing I would add is we need to ask what a channel is in its new environment because the question is if a channel is Hulu there may be a different answer than if the channel’s owning is vertical. And you and I both have a great friend who pioneered what is, from a content experience, a great content experience,YouTube. It will ultimately be, it is a digital channel.
MILLER: Special channel creators [Next New Networks] was just bought by Google last week. Google bought this asset to help them organize YouTube and create more channels, real channels out of YouTube. ROSE: And it’s a really interesting consumer service.... Until somebody organizes it and orchestrates the functional equivalent of double click for video, meaning a place that advertisers can go to place marketing vehicles that can then get served into content that isn’t necessarily going to be watched between 8 and 9 p.m. on a Tuesday night, but is actually going to be watched 24 hours a day by a segment of the population you really want to capture...the whole mental model needs to shift from what programs I buy to get 250 gross rating points in this week in prime time versus who do I go to who could serve enough ads in a framework that is almost independent of the programming its in to aggregate the 250 gross rating points between eight and 12 p.m.That infrastructure doesn’t exist. MILLER: I wanted to just go back to something that John Rose just said [about] the cable network dot com sites gaining a lot of ground. I actually think it’s maybe not for the reason he’s telling me. Let me illustrate. So in the news category Yahoo in America is number one by actually still a considerable amount. Second International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012

on any given month is either CNN.com or MSNBC.com, both related to cable networks. Finance, same thing,Yahoo Finance, second WallStreetJournal.com. Sports, first is Yahoo Sports, then ESPN, then FoxSports.com. So you can go through the categories and that’s what they look like. Health is a little different, it’s not the equivalent of a large cable health channel, so you have Yahoo and you have WebMD. I think the reasons [is] not so much the ability to drive audience, it’s because the cable sites have video. I think this is the age of video that were seeing now because with all the bandwidth around the world, video consumption is exploding. Frankly, Yahoo is not a video rich environment, not a true multimedia environment, its vulnerable in all those regards to those cable sites.
“We and the big advertisers are now looking at this on a truly global market scale.” —Michael Kassan
ROSE: I agree with what you are saying but if you went back five years ago, FoodNetwork.com was still the number one food site and the ability to access video in a rich manner was much less. But I think you’re right about video. SANDS: I think what some of these sites that are doing very well...[have] done some things that you can only do in that medium. ESPN has done a terrific job, figuring out what are the things that really engage its fans and using the dot com site...so its partly driving traffic from one to another. MILLER: Formats are proliferating on American television and those formats are coming from all over the world in a way they never have before in US television. Is this the shape of television to come, where all the markets will sort of be intertwined through formatting and again will advertisers follow it? KASSAN: I think we’ve seen it in manifested in more ways than one. Obviously you can’t underestimate the importance of user[generated content] as it relates to ideas from wherever so I think the answer is yes and I think the ability to communicate those ideas make it so much easier now and you’re going to see that be much more international now, a global phenomenon. It’s not just the user generated but it’s the people who are in the business of doing it and I think somebody, I think John you said it, the five or six hundred people you had to speak to get something done. I’m old enough to remember when there were three people you had to speak to and those three people controlled what we saw and that was the networks chiefs and now that democratization has changed it so I think the ideas are from wherever they can be generated and I think that advertisers will support those good ideas. SANDS: I would also point out that there are probably some second-order effects of that. If you take for instance one -hour dramas in television, it costs you $3 million to make a one-hour drama, half of that is recovered in the US, so the international sales of those dramas are really important profitability with the shows. If you have a lot of formats that have already appeared in international markets, moving back and forth, you could end up really squeezing the backends. Everybody thought DVDs were going to 32
be the backend revenue for one hour dramas, with the exception of Mad Men and a few others it’s not, so I think it is going to happen because everybody likes to follow the trend, and this is a probably a good one from a creative standpoint but it may not be one for business.
ROSE: I just want to raise this and also split into two different discussions. There’s a discussion about formats which I wouldn’t say is new but it will accelerate. I mean Big Brother, Sanford and Son and All in the Family were formats that were pulled from other markets into the United States and Wheel of Fortune was syndicated in 170 countries around the world. So I think this accelerates a clear phenomenon of a statistic over 40 years, but I think it’s going to happen much faster cause things will move and there will be much more agility in this. That’s different than the point Geoff’s making which is viewership will potentially start to fragment with availability and people will start making choices, like the one that I personally make which is Top Gear from the BBC is so much better than Top Gear from the History channel and so because of the explosion of viewing choice, you can actually watch stuff that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to watch. Geoff is making a very important point about the backend value of a specific instance of a program and the economics may in fact get twisted sideways. MILLER: If you were going to start a media company today for the future, what category would you go into? KASSAN: I mean in terms of what you’re talking about at the front end of this I think that platform is the platform with the most exciting group. MILLER: And it’s the one that traditional media companies have never been really strong in particular.

SANDS: Can I say that I was in your shoes on a panel asking this question to Peter Chernin when he was at News Corp. MILLER: What did he say? I’m curious. SANDS: Peter Chernin, said, well I know that what your getting at is and what you want me to say is games, social media, going to India and China, but I really wouldn’t do that. I would go to the Hollywood filmmaking business. … I couldn’t help noticing that what he’s doing now is going into China … and talking about gaming, maybe, so I think gaming is certainly one I think that you have to go where the growth is and you know notwithstanding all the challenges of the piracy issues, the Chinese government has made a huge commitment to double the size of their entertainment industry to $500 billion in the next 5 years. And if you learn anything about the survivability about companies over time, it has less to do with how well they operate and steal market share, and much more to deal with are they in the right growth markets so I would look for games and geographic markets. I would be very interested in marketing services companies. ROSE: So the first place I would go is sideways, I would look at the enabling services that will support the new value chain and of them the first place I would go is to what we were talking about before which is the ad exchange, ad networks that would support the new distribution platforms. Mobile is pretty much gone, but we were talking about video and I think if there’s any cross-platform video, there’s probably a different ecosystem that will support tablets because of the ability to integrate video high-quality magazine-like stills and those businesses migrate to a winner take all position and what’s interesting is that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of skill if you are in one of those ecosystems like search or display, to win in mobile apps or tablet apps or video, so if we believe everything we’ve been saying there’s going to be a lot of viewing through some new distribution platforms for which marketing is going to matter and in the traditional media world, the content guys take somewhere between 85 cents on the advertising dollar apps are created, and in the digital streams
The Academy’s March Board & Members Meeting
there’s 30 to 40 to 50 cents that is captured by the enabling chain. So the first place I’d go to get a meeting business is in that transactional part of the enabling chain and by the way I would become very friendly with you because the pathway into the advertisers into my platform is a path to value and I think that’s the first place I would go. SANDS: If you used to be in the media industry the typical advertiser Proctor and Gamble knew much more about NBC’s audience than NBC and I think that’s going to be one of the biggest changes for media companies—that they will have to understand their audiences much better. MILLER: That’s a terrific point and I’m glad you made it. In the digital era of direct consumer relationships, the data and the understanding that flows from that is the main source of leverage. ROSE: I just haven’t seen the visibility into economic models that are scalable, so there’s a lot of people that have a lot of data, a lot of people have that data proprietarily, some have the ability to use it, some don’t have the ability to use it. The rules around it are very fuzzy and the people who create unique value-added ser vices have done it in very specific focused applications, industry specific, behavior specific, so I think there’s going to be tremendous enterprise value created there.
Academy members Guido Corso, Rainer Siek and Jim Rosenfield

KASSAN: The single biggest issue facing the industry today is what you do with all the data that you have and how you use it properly. You can’t lose sight of the fact that every major market today looks at three buckets. 33

And nowadays, new platforms, ident of Venevision Studios and we produce about 1,500 hours social-media platforms and interactive media, play a key role. a year of telenovelas and shows for daytime and primetime, for We had a recent experience, with one of our telenovelas, Eva Univision, the Spanish-speaking network in the United States, Luna, whereby doing some interactive work we were able to bring 2 million viewers of a younger age that we didn’t have. And we’ve been doing this in Venezuela for 5 years and were amazed that it was not being done as much here. Telenovela is a love story which is hard to achieve, so the audience suffers and smiles and goes through emotions, so it’s very passionate and inspirational. Our telenovela is like a 120-hour movie. It has a beginning and an ending. A happy ending. And the majority of the telenovelas end in a marriage between the 2 main characters who suffered through the whole 120 chapters together for their love to become true. And so we were able to attract The Academy’s September Board & Members luncheon on The Bold and the Beautiful set at CBS Television City in Los Angeles the audience, a majority of 70

women, by going to the interactive world, to expand our audience, and to learn from them. We’ve also prepared special interactive content, for that audience. For example one of the characters, the main character had a communication with the audience, he confided with them his beliefs, his worries, and nothing of that was shown on the program. It was a direct communication with them. Also we were able to do something that was very well liked, to organically put product placement into it. For example, the first love relationship/love scene between the two main characters was in the back of a Chevy Traverse. So while you may say that’s normal, that in the US the first time two young kids make love is in the back of a truck, a Camino, it shows. It’s there, although it’s not clear, it’s not pointed out, when they’re kissing, you see the Chevy logo between them.
going on and I’m curious, what do you see as the future of this genre?
MARCUS: I’m Mort Marcus, I started a little company called Debmar Mercury, in 2003. It’s a small independent entrepreneurial company that is now owned by Lionsgate. We got famous by doing all the Tyler Perry sitcoms. Things have been changing with daytime. I was telling the panel at lunch that actually the people who watch daytime have virtually unchanged. But what has changed is the balance between where it’s being watched. So back in 2000, cable and broadcast represented about 50% of viewing each, so half the people would watch something on cable at daytime, and half would watch something on a broadcast station. But today, 10 years later, 65% of the viewing is done on cable, and only 35% is done at daytime even though cable spends no ROSE: Absolutely, I think you’ve money on programming from 9 to 5 brought up a lot of really interesting during the day. They spend about 99% points, particularly the difference of their programming on prime time between the telenovela and the soaps where they only have about a 50 here. Now, I want to stick to the share, so for some reason, the audifuture of daytime, and what it seems ence is migrating to cable more so in like now, when you turn on your TV daytime, even though all the money by day, there’s a lot being thrown at which is being spent by cable is in the walls. A lot of different genres, primetime. Additionally we found that, whether it’s talk shows, whether it’s a in 2000, CBS, NBC, ABC, the big three telenovela, whether it’s a soap, cernetworks, represented almost about tainly there is a lot of experimentation 75% of the viewing in broadcast. But today, it’s a little more than 50, maybe 55% of the viewing, so they’re getting weaker as well. We actually believe it’s because for some reason in the marketplace and the US in daytime TV, the programs haven’t really changed. It’s kind of the same old thing, I mean think about how long Judge Judy has been on the air, how long Oprah was on the air. It’s the same show every single day, and same soap operas, same thing, so what’s happened over time is those audiences, even though they may be winning the time period, those audiences have been eroding, eroding, eroding, and it’s getting closer to everything else. And so we believe that the marketplace has to be addressed. One other thing, in this country African Americans represent 12% of the United States population and Hispanics about 11. But in daytime TV it’s a very, very different Moderator Lacey Rose, Senior TV Editor, The Hollywood Reporter, and panelist Brad Bell, picture. African Americans represent Executive Producer & Head Writer, The Bold and the Beautiful
“80-90% of our viewers are outside of the States.... There is room for this type of programming. It’s proven to sell, we’re the top-rated daily show in the world, and if the quality is high, there’s room for all different types of genres.” —Brad Bell

about 18% of the population that watches TV during daytime, Hispanics around 15%, but it’s even further than that because on a five day a week program, if you see when you read the trades, you don’t get a rating on Tuesday, you get a rating from the week, so it’s a five-day rating. Most white Americans watch TV about one and a half times a week, they might watch Oprah one and a half times a week, so that viewership is added up over the 5 days, but an African American and a Hispanic viewer watch more like three times a week. So actually from a weight standpoint, you know African Americans and Hispanic, we’re probably talking about more like 40% of the weight of the rating in daytime, not in primetime, in daytime. So we look at it that way, and we see the marketplace continually to evolve that way and in a much more multicultural way. But it’s interesting that African Americans and Hispanics watch at a much higher rate.
“Nowadays, socialmedia platforms and interactive media play a key role in a program’s success.” —Peter Tinoco
ROSE: Brad, you have a show which falls into that category. Approaching 25 years now, which is incredible particularly in a landscape like this. Can you speak to your thoughts to where it goes, and Brad what you think of Mort’s philosophy? BELL: I’m Brad Bell, I’m the head writer and executive producer of The Bold and the Beautiful. We’ve been here since 1987 and completed about 6,100 episodes of this show and we’re in over 100 countries around the world and I think the future of daytime television is better than ever to watch. There are so many choices, there are so many quality choices, even though, Mort, as you pointed out that a lot of this is, that the money going in to the cable channels is for primetime, they’re also airing these shows during the daytime, so it’s really blanketed throughout the whole day, and I just think that like Judge Judy, or Oprah, or a great reality show, the good ones are going to survive, and the bad ones will go by the wayside. ROSE: How are you tailoring your shows to this changing viewership? This is not the same woman or in some cases men that are at home watching, so how do you go about, when you are thinking about writing your episode, or programming a talk show, how are you thinking about who that viewer is changing and tailoring to that viewer? BELL: Well, we’ve always been focused on women 25 to 54. That’s our target audience. And we still are. As our cast grows older we’ve brought in a whole new generation of great young actors, we’re picking up the pace. We’ve been lately blending reality in with the fiction. Last year we went down to skid row and union rescue mission. And we were actually interviewing people, and did an interactive experience with skid row, and we have another reality based story line coming

up. So we’re experimenting. I’ve always thought we were like experimental television. And we’re playing against what’s out there. While Oprah is now gone we’re doing more issue related stories but the core of what we do is always stirring the emotions of the viewers, creating highly addictive television with cliffhangers, and payoffs, and romantically set, that people see as an extension of their family. ROSE: You were talking earlier about the telenovela, and that format, and having a beginning, a middle and an end. Here in the US, people aren’t so willing to put an end date on things. If something is working, let’s ride that out. Has that been a challenge at all? And how do you, as this is clearly a format that has worked brilliantly around the world? As you’re trying to bring more and more here stateside, how does that form fit in to the US landscape? TINOCO: Well, when we were producing in Venezuela, we tried to accommodate to the audience, but also to the general public and tried to see what’s hot in the world. For example, a telenovela will always be a love story, but the theme of that telenovela could be something like Miami Vice where the back story is thieves, robbers and police investigation. We’re now trying a new telenovela where it’s a gang and there is an undercover police girl which is their main character and she falls in love with the head of the gang and you know it’s a mixture of everything where you have the thrilling and suspense, and it has an ending. It’s like with books, you finish this book and want to see what that author wrote, because you want to read his next book. We’re continually monitoring how the audience relates to our characters, and since we’re airing and producing you can have a character that doesn’t have a main role and then all the sudden because

people like him/her we start writing more to that character. That character could be a bad guy, and then you know, he ends up being a good guy at the end because people want him to be a good guy. So it’s constantly about adapting, monitoring what people want and being on top of things. MARCUS: I think that at some point our worlds are coming closer and closer, and we have a tendency to think that our way is the only way and the best way, but as you look around the world, and the way that it’s working now, the way formats work here, they work there, they work here, I think that we need to think about how we address the fact that most of the rest of the world does not do what we do, they don’t do something that stays on the air for 20 years, whether it be a soap or a game show or a talk show. Even game shows, they tend to run them for 13 weeks, 20 weeks. Even if they’re a hit, they pull them off, and they put something else on. And then they bring it back. And I remember we used to look at that in the UK and say “They’re crazy! Why would they stop running that show?” ROSE: Primetime 6th episode, they’re done? MARCUS: Crazy! But the reality is that maybe they’re right and maybe that’s why the audience is eroding, and maybe we need to look at it a little differently. Imagine in the US, if someone produced a telenovela, whether it be in English or whatever, that actually gripped a segment of the population, everyone would be talking about it. Why wouldn’t they? I mean, we got to get a clue sometimes and realize our way isn’t the only way.
whole technological revolution that’s happened in the past 10 or 15 years has shown us anything, it’s that people are specializing, and there are so many forms that we never thought would make it. People selling junk on TV is getting incredible ratings, and repossessing cars, a crab fisherman in Alaska, and it’s all fascinating and compelling drama, so there’s room for everything out there. ROSE: The decision made earlier this year by ABC to not continue some of their soaps; certainly they were cut a lot of flack by avid fans of these programs, and then there was another side of the business that said, you know it’s about time, it was a wise financial decision. Where do you guys come out on this? BELL: I think that everyone is trying to get the cost of production down. And while these are relatively expensive to run, it’s not exorbitant, so it’s really a matter of, if you have a working business model or don’t you. Fortunately with our global reach, we’re able to sell to CBS at an attractive price. And we’ve been renewed for a couple more years, and we’re hoping that that will continue. MARCUS: I can’t speak for what ABC did, but I understand it was about $50 million to make those soaps, so at the end of the day for them it was just a business analysis. So now they’re going to do The Chew and I’m sure it won’t do as well

ROSE: There’s been a lot of talk, whether it’s on primetime, whether it’s on daytime, the commitment that these heavy serialized shows take on viewers. You have to tune back in day after day after day and we are time strapped viewers as is. So I’m curious, how do you approach that and do you think as you are writing, as you’re programming, do you think about that viewer and maybe cateri it to a schedule that doesn’t allow you to come back day after day after day? MARCUS: [Brad] do you know how many shows per week your average viewer watches? Your show?
BELL: I’d say about two. But you know, to look at the soap operas that we do, the daily show, 255 episodes a year, as an American dinosaur just isn’t the case. 80- 90% of our viewers are outside of the States. And the format is embraced all over Europe and Africa, and Australia, and so I think, again there is room for this type of programming. It’s proven to sell, we’re the top-rated daily show in the world, and if the quality is high, there’s room for all different types of genres. I think if this 76

as the soap, but it probably cost $25 million, maybe $30 million if they go crazy. So we do The Wendy Williams Show for $20 million. Anderson Cooper is probably $35 million. But still way less than the cost of a soap, so there is a lot of room for error in their decision to do The Chew but my experience always says that when you start losing viewers, it costs you more than you— you put it on a paper and add it up, it’s worse than you think it is. They’re going to lose viewers for sure. They might get a little younger, but they’re going to lose viewers. There’s no way they’re going to do better. You know it’s a business decision… Maybe those shows didn’t sell as well internationally as Brad’s. ROSE: You’ve got another talk show with Jeremy Kyle. Can you state to the challenges to trying to launch something, and we know how important it is to come out of the gate strong.
MARCUS: Well he just won the Daytime Emmy in the UK for best talk show. We’re realizing now that if something works somewhere else, there’s a good chance it might work here. That wasn’t the case 10 years ago. It used to be that if it worked in the UK, the US broadcasters would say, almost by definition, if it worked there it won’t work here. But now, if it works in the UK in particularly, not just the UK, but if it works in the UK, people are jumping on it, because that means it will work, or could work, or potentially work here. And we look at it that way and have seen all the formats here. We’ve seen Jeremy Kyle, and he’s the number one talk show in the UK for the last six years, we like picking people who know how to do it.This guy is unbelievable at what he does; it’s sort of a Maury Povich/ Dr Phil-ish kind of thing, but he is amazing at it, he’s done 1,500 shows, and so our bet was that we got a guy who knows how to do it, doing the exact same show, but just in the US. So our fingers are crossed. By the way, those shows have a tendency to reach very very high African American [audience share]. Most people don’t’ know that the number one African American rated show in daytime is the Maury Povich show. International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012
MARCUS: They’re after the same thing. They want to be easy, they want something to hit them in the face and say ‘oh my god, I have to have it. They want to replace Oprah Winfrey but know they can’t. Mostly Dr. Oz has moved in to those time periods and is doing relatively well. Anderson Cooper’s got a few of them not doing as well as that, but Katie Couric comes up in a year, I’m sure a lot of them think she could fill that slot. But I think that nobody thinks in the end that they can replace her, I’m sure. But they’re looking for something like that, they’re looking for something that they can run near their newscast to get a really high rating and drive their local programming. ROSE: Do you have to produce and provide storylines in a different way today than you did years ago? BELL: I think there’s more that’s similar to 20 years ago and 50 years ago, hundreds of years ago when good storytelling, again, stirs the emotion. It’s something you can relate to, and we really try to get people— since we have the luxury of having 250 episodes, they give us that time, we really try to make them cry tears of joy as liquid gold for us. And when they have

that payoff of the underdog finally getting his chance in life, and getting the girl, and the wonderful wedding, that’s what we really go for and that’s been the same in drama since the beginning of drama. So I think that lately in soap operas, people have been trying to, they’ve been running a little scared, and have been doing plot driven stories, and they’ve been doing more cops and robbers, and doing things that don’t really fit what we do, and so I think there’s more that’s the same than there is different. ROSE: You said earlier when we were having lunch about how you approach a sexier story line and what not, and how that has differed, and how you’ve focused a little more on issue type fare. Can you speak to that at all? I thought that was quite fascinating. BELL: In the ’80s we were really trying to be sexy, steamy soap operas. We were really pushing the envelope in sexuality, and the bedroom scenes, and we were the go-to people for that type of stuff. Now if you want sexy, erotic satisfaction, you can get that on the Internet, you can get that on pay TV, so we’re realizing that that’s not what we’re all about. We’re about positive family morality issues and a product that can be watched through multi-generations. Grandmas can be comfortable having their granddaughter in the room and watching the show and hopefully maybe say “this woman is a role model, she’s someone you should aspire to.” So that’s where we are right now. TINOCO: I wanted to comment on some of the things we’ve learned through time and we’ve adapted. As you know, things are quicker nowadays, and we have evolved through the years. Before we had the scenes which were a minute or longer; scenes of the telenovela. Now we are 60
82
seconds or shor ter. We have scenes that are 20 seconds. Things move really quickly and we do have a cliffhanger every 10 to 15 minutes. So they don’t go to the control room and change it, people are there and they want to see the guy killed or not because you left it on the cliffhanger, and we don’t do it for every episode, we do it every 10 or 15 minutes when you go to commercials. So things have changed and evolved and we have to be adapting to it. And that is a very important thing to stay alive and to stay on what the people want and how people change.
BELL: What I think is equally important to recognize is that while we deliver in our soap operas and telenovelas, the greatest thing is when you give that actress the role and monologue, and the lights dim down and she gets it and shows what she does. It’s almost operatic, how she does the whole range of emotion, with tears, and anger, and that’s what I think brings them back more than anything. Just that love affair. MARCUS: And in the new world of technology, where everything is available from Netflix or downloads or whatever, most of the stuff in daytime is actually not. In fact the daytime shows are hardly TiVo’d at all. They’re really more, you watch them when you can get them, and you really want to watch them, but you don’t watch them later on. Most people watch it live, which makes it almost more traditional style. ROSE: Going back quickly to that ABC decision. I want to go here only because I think what is interesting now is all the talk about a company like Prospect Park coming in and saying “Ok, we want to move this type of viewing, this type of show, with an audience online.” Do you think that is a future medium for a genre that does require the kind of commitment that it does? BELL: I think that it can work along with television. But I think to solely produce a soap opera for the Internet is ver y challenging. It couldn’t be an hour a day, ever y day. It’s just cost prohibited at this point with the ads and the Internet. At some point that could cer tainly happen. But I think it would have to work in conjunction with a television slate. TINOCO: Our experience is sort of the same, but we do immediately after that you can watch it online, right after it finishes on broadcast. I mean it’s really immediately if you want to see it, it’s there you can really go back and see the
International Emmy Almanac 2011/2012

last 3 episodes. The other thing that changes is our viewers usually watch 5 days of the week. They don’t watch 1 show or 2 shows per day or week, they’re there every day, every day. And it’s because of leaving the cliffhangers, you know you leave it so they want it, they can’t wait until tomorrow the same time to see the continuation. MARCUS: That’s interesting. I wonder if we’re so set in our minds that we don’t think anyone will, but if you did a show like that, would people TiVo it and want to go— they wouldn’t be home 5 days a week, but would they TiVo it and watch it. Someone has to take a bet. It’s a big bet.
.MARCUS: But there’s only 22 of them. TINOCO: Well that’s it.You see it for a month. People liked it, they wanted more, but we don’t have anymore. We’ll show you another one— I don’t know, Grey’s Anatomy or something like that. They took Grey’s Anatomy and made it in to an every day telenovela. It’s called Open Heart. So see, you can take something that the US market made and adapt that to the world and it works.
ROSE: Well also it’s a different business model. You look at a show, this is primetime, you look at a show like 24 which is a heavy serialized show which did incredibly well in the DVD field— MARCUS: But people wanted to watch it back to back to back. They wanted that conclusion. But that’s not the model in which we operate in the US so it would be interesting to see. TINOCO: Let me tell you about an experience we had in Venezuela. We bought Hawaii 5-0, but instead of airing it once a week, we aired it every day. And it worked. And it worked perfectly. It actually exceeded our expectations of viewers
