INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS & SCIENCES

President’s Report 2015 Rio de Janeiro, Versailles, Los Angeles, Cannes, and, of course, New York. These are just some of the places around the globe where the Academy staged events this year, one of the most productive in our recent history.

Bruce Paisner ur Academy Day in Rio, which took place this past June, featured a keynote speech by Brazil’s president, Dilma Rousseff, and a tour of the rapidly building 2016 Rio Olympic facilities, led by Rio Mayor Eduardo Paez. Our Fall board and members meeting in early October took place where Louis XIV once held court, and featured a private tour and reception at the Versailles chateau itself. Our guest of honor at the reception was Francois Hollande, the president of France. Throughout the year we held panels, judgings and other events to advance our members’ professional and personal interests. Our Emmy judgings took place in 16 countries, and featured many major semi-final judging events, where our member hosts showcased the Academy and their companies with discussions, receptions and dinners. The Academy is deeply grateful to Grupo Globo of Brazil, a supporter of our work for many years and our host for Academy Day in Rio. Globo Chairman Roberto Irineu Marinho received our Directorate Award at last year’s Gala, and he and his son Roberto Marinho Neto and Globo’s CEO, Carlos Henrique Schroder, put on an event our members will remember for a long time. As part of our ongoing effort to move these meetings out of New York and to other places around the world, so that our members in those regions have easier access to the organization, we held our

Fall Board & Members Meeting in Versailles. The producers of the new miniseries Versailles provided essential logistical and financial support to make this event possible, and their help enabled our members to hear about the state of European co-production, see the Palace of Versailles in a way few people get to do and meet with leading industry players, including French Minister of Culture, Fleur Pellerin. I have written before in these Reports about the era of turbulent change our industry is living through, but in the last two years that change has become even more real and impactful. Eligibility for the International Emmy Awards competition now includes OTT and broadband, and many of our programs focus on what is going on in these new and growing areas of media. I am personally delighted that senior executives from so many digital and social media companies have become members of the Academy. As I said when introducing President Rousseff in Rio, “In a very fractionated world, television is one of the few things that unites us. Television professionals, wherever they are in the world, speak the same language, have the same goals, and want to transcend differences so they can increase understanding.” Encouraging and facilitating that is a major reason the Academy exists, and our growth and influence over the last few years is a good indication of how much it is needed. Our other job, of course, is to give out Emmys for excellence in programming outside the U.S. and now, in some cases, inside the U.S., too. In separate ceremonies during the year, we presented Emmys for kids, digital, and news programming. At our November Gala, we award Emmys for ten more categories, and starting last year, for excellence in U.S. primetime programming in a language primarily other than English. In 2016, we will be holding our kids awards at Miptv, with our partner Reed Midem. In a rapidly growing worldwide organization, we have many challenges, and thankfully we have the support of many individuals to help us meet them. I have already talked about Grupo Globo and the Marinho family. Our other major corporate partners are Phoenix Satellite Television of Hong Kong and its chairman, Liu Changle, Semba Communications of Angola and its founder, Correon Du, and Dori Media, the sponsor of our Academy Day in Jerusalem last year, and its president, Nadav Palti. I am grateful to them and to the many other companies which support us. The Academy’s Executive Committee has worked with me for many years in guiding and building our organization. Its members are preoccupied with many other responsibilities, and I am deeply grateful for the time they manage to spend on the Academy. I want to thank Fred Cohen, our Chairman; Simon Sutton, our Secretary; Larry Gershman, Rainer Siek, Jim Rosenfield and Kevin Beggs, the heads of our standing committees; as well as Abbe Raven, Ralph Baruch and Adriana Cisneros. The heart of the Academy is the professional staff that runs it on a day-to-day basis, led by the ever resourceful Camille Bidermann Roizen, our Senior Vice President and Executive Director. Many of our key staff members have been with our organization for many years and have grown with it. We have an excellent working relationship with the Television Academy in Los Angeles and the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in New York. For that I am grateful for the support of Bruce Rosenblum and Maury McIntyre at the Television Academy and Chuck Dages, Malachy Wienges and Bob Mauro at the National Academy. I do not believe I could do this job without the help and support of my company, Hearst, and its president & CEO, Steven R. Swartz. Steve has been at several of our events and is showing by example how established media companies can understand and participate in a changing technological world. Steve and his predecessor as Hearst CEO, Frank A. Bennack, Jr., currently Hearst’s executive vicechairman, believe in the mission of the Academy and my participation in that mission. I thank them deeply for their unwavering backing and support. The Academy in 2016 looks forward to growth and change in all our activities, as we serve our members and the industry in these challenging but fascinating times.

2015 GALA CHAIR

Charo Santos-Concio Charo Santos-Concio is the President, CEO & Chief Content Officer of ABS-CBN Corporation appreciated Asian heart and feel. Our relationships with our audiences have transcended entertainment and commerce. Our audiences consider us as family, in a uniquely powerful embrace we hope to export to the world. Being the 2015 Gala Chair is my chance to share our story of evolution and our vision of an exciting future in media and entertainment. How important is the international marketplace for ABS-CBN? Content knows no boundaries and technology has made the world smaller indeed, so our presence in the international market is vital. As the leading content producer in the Philippines, ABS-CBN has always envisioned Filipino content to travel across the globe and find its niche even among non-Filipino markets. We ventured into international distribution 15 years ago and since then, we have been present in various content markets such as the ATF, Filmart, TIFFCOM, BCWW, DISCOP, NATPE, MIPTV and MIPCOM. To date, ABS-CBN content is present in over 50 territories all over the world and has sold over 30,000 hours of content worldwide. While our traditional buyers come from Southeast Asia and Africa, we achieved breakthroughs this year in new territories, such as Central Asia, the Balkan region in Southeastern Europe, and Latin America. The growing interest of the international market in our content certainly presents bright prospects for further increasing our revenues. But equally important perhaps is being able to share and showcase what Filipinos are capable of to the rest of the world. What does being the 2015 Gala Chair mean to you? It is indeed a great honor for me, on behalf of the ABS-CBN Corporation, to be this year’s Gala Chair. It could not have come at a more perfect time for the Philippines, in the midst of our economic upturn, accompanied by an equivalent boom in our entertainment landscape. For someone like me who, as an ordinary fan, once used to wait outside ABS-CBN’s studio gates to catch my favorite stars, heading the Emmys Gala is a wonderful milestone in my journey leading ABS-CBN. ABS-CBN started as a radio station strung from surplus parts after WWII, and flourished into the country’s biggest television broadcast company. Today, we are also into cable-TV services, film and music production, online content and commerce, mobile telecommunications, magazine publishing, merchandising and licensing, TV shopping services, events, among others. We have also expanded into theme-park development and management, and just recently, released the Philippines’ first-ever movie made for mobile via our own mobile telephony brand. Aside from our various news and entertainment sites, we now have a YouTube multichannel network to boost our online content, and recently unveiled a social media celebrity marketing agency, all pioneering ventures in the country. Yet for all the big moves, our interaction with our consumers remains intimate, and based on a comprehensive reading of their hearts and minds. Through the years, our people’s ways of engaging content have transformed many times over, some of them actually driven by our company. Most of these businesses would have been considered unlikely, perhaps unthinkable, a decade ago. But our commitment to our audiences stays the same. We believe in inspiring, entertaining, and empowering them through compelling and meaningful content, delivered to them in a manner informed by technologies and trends, but retaining a universally 6

What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for ABS-CBN in the coming years? Content creators like ABS-CBN predict and stay attuned to dramatically changing consumer behavior in a way meaningful and beneficial to them. We all know that content is no longer limited to a single platform. Developing the skills and creating the mindsets necessary to create content for these various platforms are crucial. Harnessing the online generation of creatives who have not grown up in our core medium of television is a major area of growth. Another challenge is to develop a pricing model that is platform-independent. Thus, we are continually studying and testing possible scenarios for our evolving businesses, also in the light of intensifying competition offered by non-traditional media and entertainment such as OTT providers. These challenges do keep us awake at night. But what excites us more are the opportunities they offer. In the Philippines, we have pioneered new ways for audiences to experience content outside their TV screens. We are creating an ecosystem for them where we have events, concerts, theme parks, stores, and other ways for them to be engaged, centered around an online and mobile relationship, of course. Fortunately, our preeminent position in the market has further fueled the drive for innovation in our organization, especially in business development, content creation, and people management. We intend to perfect that rare balancing act of being global, while seeing the world as one big family, serving as wide an audience as possible while communicating intimately to reach out to each consumer, and finally, balancing a creative voice that is universal, Asian and Filipino at the same time. assem Youssef, dubbed the Jon Stewart of the Arab World, was the host of popular TV show AlBernameg, the first of its kind political satire show in the Middle East. Originally a 5-minute show on YouTube, AlBernameg became the first online to TV conversion in the Middle East and the most watched show across the region with 30 million viewers every week.

INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

AlBernameg received wide acclaim around the world with coverage in some of the biggest media outlets, topping it off with Youssef’s appearance on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart twice in June 2012 and April 2013. In June 2013, Youssef hosted Jon Stewart on AlBernameg in Cairo, marking the second season’s peak. Throughout its three seasons AlBernameg remained controversial through its humorous yet bold criticism of the ruling powers, which led to tens of lawsuits being filed against the show and its host. Youssef was even issued an arrest warrant in March 2013 and turned himself in the next day where he was questioned for five hours and released on bail. In recognition of his success, Youssef was named among Time Magazine’s most influential list for 2013 under the “Pioneers” category, was awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the CPJ, and was chosen by Foreign Policy magazine as one of the global thinkers during the same year. During its third season, the show achieved unprecedented weekly viewership ratings for 11 consecutive weeks. In June 2014, and after a sixweek break, the AlBernameg team held a press conference where Youssef announced the termination of the show due to overwhelming pressures on both the show and the channel airing it. In the spring of 2015 Youssef served as a resident fellow at the Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government for one semester. During his stay in the U.S. he appeared twice as a Senior Middle East Correspondent on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, commenting on the political situation in the region. Youssef majored in cardiothoracic surgery, passed the United States Medical License Exam (USMLE) and is a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). 7

2015 MARCH BOARD & MEMBERS MEETING

A Conversation on Bloomberg’s Digital Strategy

Josh Steiner

March 20, 2015 Joshua L. Steiner, Head of Industry Verticals, Bloomberg L.P., conducted a discussion with Joshua Topolsky, Editor, Bloomberg Digital, Chief Digital Content Officer, Bloomberg Media. Here is an excerpt of their conversation. Steiner: There are a lot of different ways of defining Bloomberg—we do a variety of things. First and foremost, obviously we think of ourselves as a financial information business. It is at the core of what we do. To Mike Bloomberg’s credit, going back many, many years there was a clear understanding that to be successful, ultimately to our core subscribers we need to serve a whole variety of different kinds of news and information. That led to our news business being started over 20 years ago. We are now, to all due respect to our friends at Reuters, certainly one of if not the leading news organization in the world. We certainly like to think of ourselves as the leading news organization. Certainly based on where people recruit from we are the leading one. It’s essential to our business and it’s essential to our culture. Many of you in the television business, first and foremost, might think, “Okay

T

Bloomberg is a leading provider of business information on the television, so why aren’t we talking about television?” Probably because we thought it would be interesting to do something different and to talk to you about the intersection between our television business and our digital strategy. And to try to talk a little bit about that combination and how we very dramatically over the last 6 months evolved our digital strategy, which is very tightly linked, ultimately, to our linear television business, but it has a life of its own. In order to do that, I was lucky to steal Josh away from what he was doing. It was chosen based partially on his expertise and partially based on the fact that many of you are jetlagged and tired so many of you can remember only one first name.

o be successful, ultimately to our core subscribers we need to serve a whole variety of different kinds of news and information.” — Josh Steiner

INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

Topolsky: Mostly that.

Steiner: Just briefly, my job at Bloomberg is to run the Industry Verticals. Some of you may know that we diversified into other forms of business information. I’ve been here about two years to run those businesses. We are a leading provider of government information, energy information, legal and tax information—those are all web-based subscription products, some of which are available through the terminal and some of which live a life of their 47

take a meeting with Justin.” I loved Businessweek. It’s actually one of the magazines that I would reference whenever anyone would ask, “Who are your competitors? Who do you really worry about? Who do you think is doing a really good job?” I would look at Businessweek and say these guys are killing it. And I looked at what Bloomberg was doing and what they are doing on the media side. What we are doing now is extremely entrepreneurial, extremely forward looking in my opinion, far more than I expected actually when I came in for that first interview. But what’s truly magical about it, what the huge opportunity is, is that this is a company that has a core group of people that are doing this very entrepreneurial—well there are many entrepreneurial people here—but this core group in media is trying to build something brand new, trying to take the Bloomberg brand to a new place, and to a new audience, but backed by these incredible resources of thousands of journalists around the globe, a TV network, magazines, radio, and now a growing digital footprint. So when I saw that opportunity I sort of, this is probably too long of a preamble, but it was impossible to say no, it was an offer I couldn’t refuse. And here I am, building brands at Bloomberg Media and with Bloomberg News.

Joshua Topolsky own on the internet. So let’s start, and Josh before we begin what we are doing why don’t you spend literally a minute talking about what you were doing before and importantly, when Justin Smith, who started here about a year and a half ago and had a very successful career at the Atlantic before that, came to run our whole media business. He and Josh Tyrangiel, who was the editor of Businessweek, helped recruit you. So what were you doing and why did you join us?

Steiner: And the fact that I was here... Topolsky: Joshua, once I heard Joshua was here it was a slam-dunk. Steiner: It was a long preamble without the most important part, so I was a little disappointed with the preamble. Topolsky: Yes, that’s true.

T

he brands that you respect and care about and go back to time and time again are the brands you have real affection for.” — Joshua Topolsky Topolsky: So prior to being at Bloomberg, I was at a company called Vox. I actually founded a company called Vox Media, which was a media startup. I was editor in chief of a website called The Verge for several years, it was part of Vox. You may know the name, you may not. They were recently written about in The Hollywood Reporter because they made a WME deal—some of you may have read that. It’s a very dynamic media startup company, very much along the lines of Buzzfeed, but taking a different approach. Our approach was doing very high quality, deeply reported journalism in new ways; on the web, through mobile, in video. So I started the business, I was there for several years, was not expecting to leave, and I came for a meeting. Justin called, Justin Smith, and I said, “Well, I had to at least INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

Steiner: So we had a website for many years which was functional, actually we had a good business. Topolsky: Yes. Steiner: We had pretty good traffic. Topolsky: Yes. Steiner: And so you say to yourself, given the fact that it was sort of working, why blow it up? And you guys pretty much blew it up. So what was wrong? What was the problem you were trying to solve? Topolsky: Well, we had two websites: we had Businessweek.com and Bloomberg.com, both of them were serving very specific purposes. One was kind of a funnel for some of the news that we would do for the terminal customers—that was Bloomberg.com. One was the funnel for the magazine. Neither one them were deeply connected, they were often duplicative, where you would have the same story in two different places and neither one did the thing that I think was most needed, and is most needed right now, in media, particularly in news. Neither one had a well-defined brand for the website. You didn’t go, 49

news people forget this and don’t think about it. But the brands that you respect and you care about and you go back to time and time again are the brands you have a real affection for. And this isn’t just about do they have a great logo or are they using the right color set. It’s about who they are, what kind of voice they speak in. Steiner: Before we get to what we did, we have to look at the media business and you’ll have to say the history of established media companies taking their existing brands and moving onto new platforms— with all due respect to some of you, I’m sure there are exceptions to this rule—is pretty terrible, right? Topolsky: Yes that’s right, nor did they buy them. Steiner: Nor did they buy them! Like Turner did as it turns out. I’m going to be a little bit U.S.-centric here, so I apologize for that, because I know many of you are thinking more internationally, appropriately enough. The best brands either in print or in linear television actually very rarely created a new format. So print didn’t create linear cable and linear cable hasn’t generally speaking migrated to digital. Topolsky: Right, right. Steiner: So when you look at that experience, what did you learn from that and say, wait a minute, if you want to take these powerful linear brands either in terms of print or linear television and make something successful, what do we have to learn from this experience?

View from the Bloomberg building onto the East River I have to read Businessweek today or I have to read Bloomberg today. We did have a good audience for Bloomberg but it wasn’t a growing audience. We kind of plateaued and we were flat and being flat is not a place you want to be when you’ve got a very aggressive set of competitors. So part of this, the blowing up of the website—what you see here is the blown-up version. Steiner: Before you criticize, this is the new one. Topolsky: This is the new website. Steiner: We didn’t give you the before and after, so if you thought we were doing the before and after, which is sometimes is done, this is the after. Topolsky: It wasn’t just about a redesign of a website, it was about— there obviously was of course a huge redesign of the website. But it was also about how do you bring together all those things that I mentioned, those resources, the thousands of journalists that work for Bloomberg News, the TV people, the radio people, the digital people that are here. How do you bring them together and put them into a brand that feels like something you can know, and something you can love? I actually feel like in 50

Topolsky: In many cases those businesses you described have this legacy product, and a legacy product is established and makes money. And to try to shift a legacy product you can’t simply say, “Shut off the legacy, forget about TV we don’t need to that anymore, we are going to focus on digital.” The interesting thing about Bloomberg, not to bring this back to Bloomberg, but I think one of the reasons that a New York Times or Wall Street Journal has more of a challenge than we do here to build a 21st century media brand is they have to worry about the legacy. The legacy— Steiner: Cannibalization Topolsky: Well, cannibalization of the legacy, but also of supporting the legacy and trying to hold on to the legacy. Where our legacy actually makes $9 billion a year, our legacy is the terminal, and it is a technology product first and foremost. And so the terminal is built on instant speed in a digital realm and so when you look at the legacy by comparison we actually have a pretty good legacy product that can support many different types of businesses. That can be infused by businesses’ like we do on the web but it is not solely linked to that one thing. So if you are talking about these companies that had had difficulty, the most difficult part in my opinion with any business is when you have to shift to a new reality. I think you see this in technology all the time. It’s not being able to stop the thing you are doing that ultimately is a losing endeavor, that if you can look at the long view and see that sort of wedeling down at some point. Dina Foxx - Todlicher Kontakt (Dina Foxx - Deadly Contact) ZDF / UFA / Exozet Germany Director and Concept Coordinator: Max Zeitler Producer Online: Kristian Costa-Zahn Producer TV and Webseries: Leif Alexis Commissioning Editor: Milena Bonse Dina Foxx – Deadly Contact is a dramatic crime story that tackles relevant contemporary topics (functional food, epigenetic) and turns transmedia entertainment into a fluid experience: on-demand, broadcast, and multi-device (website and app). A two-part TV movie, a 7-episode webseries, a casualgame, interactive 360-degree videos and around 30 hours of engagement all enable viewers to access a different reality within the second movie. At the end of the first TV movie, main character Dina Foxx is seen running away from a mysterious persecutor and viewers receive a clear call to action: go online, to first: find out who’s chasing Dina (webseries, woven into the plot of the second TV film); second: help Kilian fight the epidemic (casualgame that is part of the story universe); and third: join Jason in discovering the whole truth by interactive 360-degree videos which contain vital clues. Each clue leads to a riddle that users must solve by finding fictitious websites, by scanning the movie and by employing their own deductive logic. If the viewer manages to solve all three online parts within one week, they will receive exclusive access to the movie before it is broadcast on TV. INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

Reverse the Odds Maverick Television / Chunk / Channel 4 / Cancer Research UK United Kingdom Executive Producer: Claire McArdle Producer: Alex Hryniewicz Game Lead: Donnie Kerrigan Commissioning Editor: Colin MacDonald In October 2014, Channel 4 teamed up with Cancer Research UK for Stand Up 2 Cancer, a live fundraising show packed with stars and inspirational stories. We wanted younger viewers to be able to donate time instead of money, so we created a companion mobile game – “Reverse the Odds.” It features a race of fun characters – The Odds. Players help them to transform their world from a drab wasteland into a colourful wonderland. In the game, players see real images of cancer cells from patients, just like researchers analyse in the lab, and answer simple questions about what cells they see, how many there are and how bright they are glowing. This information is key for researchers who use it to reveal clues about cancer – how it behaves and ultimately achieve better treatments for patients. We partnered with youth YouTube channel DailyMix to bring the fight against cancer to an audience of younger players, working with YouTube stars – Joe Sugg and Jim Chapman – to enthuse their followers with challenges around the game. Young people became citizen scientists, helping researchers get through massive datasets. 58

PRIMETIME EMMY WEEKEND MEMBERS EVENT

An International Academy Media Update: Transgender Characters & Storylines on Television Today

Brad Bell, Patrick Mulcahey, Jeff Jenkins, Zackary Drucker, Rhys Ernst, Mary McNamara

September 18, 2015 Bradley P. Bell, Stage 31, Los Angeles Nick Adams: Hi everyone. I’m the Director of Programs for Transgender Media at GLAAD, and for those of you who don’t know, GLAAD is a nonprofit organization founded about 30 years ago with the mission of working specifically with the media to improve the way the media — Hollywood and journalists — talk about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. We have been working very hard on improving the way transgender people are portrayed in the media for well over 20 years. [In 1999] we began distributing to the media GLAAD’s media reference guide on how to respectfully, fairly and accurately talk about transgender people and issues. Our media reference guide on trans issues was subsequently used by the Associated Press, The New York Times and many other media outlets to improve their own style guides on how to talk about transgender people. I’ve actually worked at GLAAD for 17 years and that was about the time that I began my own transition, and I probably would have transitioned much younger if I had ever seen a single media image of a transgender man growing up. I didn’t know any transgender people in my life or at least I didn’t think that I did, and the internet didn’t exist because I’m old. So I couldn’t really even imagine or articulate why I was different or how

W

I was different until I could see myself and my experience reflected back to me in the media, which is why I’m so incredibly passionate about media images of transgender people being done well, being done fairly, being done respectfully and actually accurately portraying our own experiences. I work with a lot of transgender youth and I want them to be able to see themselves in the media in a way that gives them hope for the future. While it’s never too late to transition and become your authentic self, it’s a lot easier if you can do it sooner rather than later, so I’m very, very passionate about GLAAD’s mission and about the media being able to tell the stories of transgender people. I work with a lot of films and TV shows as they begin to prepare to tell transgender stories and that has certainly increased in the last couple of years as there’s really been an increasing interest in us and our lives, but the thing that’s also impressed me recently is when showrunners and creators and writers and producers come to GLAAD, they really want to get it right and they want to do a good job of telling transgender stories, and they’re curious and open to feedback on how to do that and that really represents a lot of the shows as well that you’ll be hearing from today. We are, as Time Magazine said, at a transgender tipping point. The Laverne Cox cover last year, that was the cover headline, and it certainly is a lot better today than I think it’s probably ever been in my lifetime,

e want to make a statement and be a positive force.” —Brad Bell

but we still have a very long way to go. When it comes to scripted characters on television, it may seem like there’s this boom of trans characters everywhere, but Maya Avant — now Maya Forrester — is actually the only series regular transgender character on broadcast or cable television, and this morning when I counted, GLAAD was currently tracking 146 shows on broadcast and cable television that have series regular lesbian, gay and bisexual characters, so 146 shows versus 1. We’re also going to be talking today about some of the great shows on the streaming networks like Transparent that have series regular trans characters, but on broadcast and cable, it’s really just The Bold and The Beautiful at this point. Let’s welcome our first panel, I’m very thrilled to have them. Thank you very much.

Rhys Ernst: I think social media and the internet just are hitting critical mass. That’s a huge part of it alongside the gay, lesbian marriage equality movement having paved the way for so many years, and well, media also in terms of representation of gay and lesbian characters. People realized that the transgender movement was this last bastion of civil rights that just hadn’t been looked at. It was this T at the end of LGBT that people had heard of, but yet it was invisible and underexplored.

Panel 1:

Mary McNamara: Has television changed? Obviously the actual nature of television has changed a lot, and actually, does that have something to do with the fact that we now have Netflix and Amazon and arenas that are not afraid to do something different? They are demanding that they do something different to stand out. I mean what happened in TV that made you say, “Okay, it’s time”? With I Am Cait, you had a well-known

Moderator, Mary McNamara, TV Critic, Los Angeles Times Panelists: Bradley Phillip Bell, President, Bell-Phillip Television Productions; Patrick Mulcahey, Writer, The Bold and The Beautiful; Jeff Jenkins, VP, Bunim/Murray Productions; Zackary Drucker, Co-Producer, Transparent; Rhys Ernst, Co-Producer, Transparent Rhys Ernst: I’m a co-producer on Transparent. I made the opening title sequence as well, and along with my colleague here, we recently produced a series called This is Me that was nominated for an Emmy. Zackary Drucker: I am also a co-producer. I also produced the Emmy-nominated series This is Me. I’m also an artist; I’ve shown my work at The Whitney Museum, MoMA PS1, The Pompidou, among other venues.

Jeff Jenkins: Younger generations coming up are just – as Rhys said, through social media and TV programs like The Real World, which introduced you to a trans character – was that five years ago? Younger generations are just so much more accepting and things like being trans or LBGT is a non-issue, and that’s why we’re able to be embraced now.

I

work with a lot of transgender youth and I want them to be able to see themselves in the media in a way that gives them hope for the future.” — Nick Adams

Jeff Jenkins: I’m a VP at Bunim/Murray Productions and I am one of the executive producers on the show I Am Cait, also the executive producer of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, Stewarts and Hamiltons, Total Divas and Dash Dolls. Patrick Mulcahey: My first job in daytime television was in 1979 working for Mary-Ellis Bunim on Search for Tomorrow. I’m a story consultant and a writer on The Bold and the Beautiful. Brad Bell: I’m executive producer and head writer of The Bold and Beautiful. Welcome to our stage. Mary McNamara: Thank you for having us. I’m a television critic at the Los Angeles Times. When Nick approached me about moderating this panel, he and I were talking about the fact that we met 14 years ago when I did a series of stories about the transgender community, based on the fact that the transgender characters were starting to appear on television. Obviously it was in very small roles...but we felt that something was going to happen, that we were on the verge of something happening, and that was 14 years ago. Now it’s finally happening, and so my question to you all, is why now? Zackary Drucker: I think that for so long, a trans identity was predicated on disappearing, on being invisible. Because of that, you had an evaporating community, and I think that with this new generation of out and proud trans people has come a new wave of representation. I don’t think it could’ve happened without it. 88

D’Lo: I’m mostly a stand up [comedian] and actor, soul theater artist. I’ve been on Transparent, and a little part in Glee, and Sense8 and Looking. Trace Lysette: I am part of the guest cast on Transparent, and Blunt Talk on Starz, and I appeared on I Am Cait a couple of times. Candis Cayne: I started in 2007 with a role on Dirty Sexy Money on ABC. I did a CSI: New York episode, that was my first appearance in TV. I’ve worked on a lot of different things. Recently I’ve been on the amazing I Am Cait, which is changing the world. Candis Cayne, Trace Lysette, D’Lo, Karla Mosley, Nick Adams brand who came out the way no one else had come out before, but what made you think “Okay, this is the time, we can do this now”? Jeff Jenkins: Our showrunner, Andrea Metz is here; that’s why I keep looking out in the front row. I think when we started at the very beginning, we didn’t know if it was time at all. At the very beginning, Andrea and I were like, “Hmm, I wonder if we’re going to get shot or harassed or hate mail, or I wonder if Bruce — Caitlyn Jenner is going to get harassed or vilified.” We actually had a lot of discussions about, “Wow, this could go really badly,” and it was the most beautiful surprise to see it slowly unfurl and be received not only positively, but overwhelmingly positively, and I think a lot of that is attributed to the guidance we got from GLAAD, from Nick and Jenny, but I don’t think we were in a mind space of “Oh, the world’s ready.” Patrick Mulcahey: It’s a great trend that’s happening now. Mary McNamara: You guys are the only representation of broadcast television. So what made you think, “It’s time, we’re going to do this”? Brad Bell: I think it’s really a change of attitude that’s gone on here at CBS. Where before we would have storylines that might be considered a little edgy or not right for our viewers, now, because of what’s going on in Netflix and what’s going on in social media, we were encouraged and supported and it’s really wonderful, and we want to be one of the trailblazers. Now, CBS is encouraging it and it’s fun to be a part of this whole move. I think it’s a great sign for the time that we live in because people are much more accepting and embracing.

Panel 2: Moderators: Nick Adams, Director of Programs, Transgender Media, GLAAD Panelists: Karla Mosley, Actress; Candis Cayne, Actress; D’Lo, Actor, Writer, Comedian; Trace Lysette, Actress Karla Mosley: I am an actress and I play Maya Avant Forrester on The Bold and the Beautiful.

INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

Nick Adams: So, I want to start with Karla. The one difference that you have from the other panelists is that you are not a trans actor. You were hired to play Maya and she was not a trans character when you were hired. What were your thoughts when they came to you and told you that Maya was going to be a transgender woman? How did you prepare when you got the news that you were going to play this part? Karla Mosley: I was really pleasantly surprised that our show was planning on tackling this issue. It was important to me and what I heard from Brad is that they were interested in telling the story in an authentic and grounded and human way. One of my first questions is, “Why me?” I’m a black actor and I understand the importance of being able to tell our own stories. So as a cisgender woman, why am I the person to tell this story? But I think that there have been benefits to the fact that the audience has known Maya as a cisgender woman for two years and now has been introduced to the fact that she’s trans. The audience has had to go through many of the emotions that friends and family go through with people that they have known. That’s been an interesting positive side. Then, just to recognize my privilege as a cisgender woman being in the position to tell the story, and to prepare, as much as I could, to educate myself, to talk to friends and read as much material — and listen — and I continue to do that. Nick Adams: For those of you who don’t know, the word “cisgender” – “cis” is the Latin for same, where “trans” is the Latin for different or crossing over. So cisgender simply is a word for someone who is not transgender, that is not commonly known so I thought I’d throw that out there.... [Karla] when I met you early on in the process and they asked me to come in and do a media training for the actors ... one of the first things you said to me was, “I’ve already read Janet Mock’s book, and I watched the hour-long conversation between Laverne Cox and Bell Hooks.” I was like, “Oh, this actor is already so far ahead of most people in terms of you really wanting to do your homework and do the story justice.” There is also a trans actor on this show named Scott Turner Schofield, who couldn’t be here today. He is a transgender actor who has been brought on to play Maya’s friend from early on in her transition and, in fact, performed the wedding for Rick and Maya in the room where we’re going to have our lunch. That’s been good too for the audience of The Bold and the Beautiful to meet that character who they know is played by a trans actor.

91

EMMY_2015_PRIMETIME_EMMY_1109_MARCH 11/5/15 12:00 PM Page 4

Karla Mosley: It’s amazing how awareness happens and how activism seeps into our daily lives and how life can imitate art. In the beginning, when this secret was leaking to the cast and crew, [there’d be] little jokes and comments, but as time has gone on people are educated, and correct themselves, and are to open to other experiences. Nick Adams: Candis, those of us in the LGBT community certainly have known of you for years, been fans of you for years, knew how talented and successful you had been in Hollywood. Your role on Dirty Sexy Money was the first regular transgender character in a series played by a transgender actress. How have you seen things change over the last 10 or 15 years that you have been a working actor in Hollywood?

E “

ination. The way those characters have largely been portrayed over the entirety of television has been sex workers, the most common profession shown for a transgender character on television. As Zachary mentioned before, oftentimes as the victim and not an empathetic victim, not the a victim that you care about the fact that they died. They’re just there to be dead body, or a villain, a psychopathic serial killer. The linking of being trans and being some sort of serial-killing psychopath is very common. So, it has to be difficult as an actor when you look at those roles. I hope that, [like] the shows we’re talking about today, we are going to begin to see more diverse range. So Trace, what have you been experiencing when you go out for auditions? Are you interested in going out for auditions for the trans roles that are out there, but now also non-trans roles?

ntertainment at its very best has the power to expand our culture’s notions of difference.” — Zackary Drucker

Candis Cayne: Well, when I first started, there was no archetype, there was no one. So, you just were hoping that you would get a part — maybe they’ll write a trans character in and I would just go to auditions and hope. Now, there are a lot of trans characters that are being written so a lot of actors out there who are trans feel like now they can have a way to break into the industry. There was no one for me to look up to and say, “Oh, I want to be and do that.” There was Tula, a Bond girl, but other than that, there wasn’t really anybody that I could remember. For the first time in my life I feel like the wind is at my back as opposed to on my face. I’m going to auditions all the time, I’m doing projects, it’s an amazing feeling to be considered just an actress as opposed to an oddity. [Laughter] Nick Adams: What have you felt has been the response to I Am Cait? Do you feel like Hollywood is more like interested in you? What has been the impact of being on I Am Cait? Candis Cayne: Well, I mean the visibility level is pretty huge. I get stopped all the time now, which is really cool, but everybody comes up to me and just gives me a lot of love. Yesterday in Whole Foods, this one Latin guy came up to me and said, “Me and my girlfriend wait for Sunday so we can watch the show,” and I told her, “You come in to the Glendale Whole Foods all the time,” and she was like, “Shut up!” he was like, “No, he does, and so I had to tell you that.” [Laughter] I was like, “Oh my God, this is really crazy.” But it’s amazing. So it’s been really, really good. Just as far as the industry having general meetings for the first time with networks and casting directors, which I never had before because I was always just put away, and “If a trans prostitute role comes up you can be — you can audition for this.” That kind of thing, that’s where it started. Then Dirty Sexy changed it because they wrote a love story for the first time. So it wasn’t only of a first trans being on a network show as a recurring character, it was really the first time that you saw a trans character have feelings and emotions with somebody who was cisgender. Nick Adams: GLAAD, every November, puts out a report that looks at transgender images on TV. We actually have looked back now at the last 13 years of how television specifically has portrayed trans characters. We ranked them according to fairness and accuracy or whether the character was multi-dimensional or not. Using that ranking, about 88 percent of the portrayals ranged from horrifically offensive to mediocre barely acceptable. Twelve percent that we looked at were considered really groundbreaking enough, for example, to get a GLAAD Media Award nom92

Trace Lysette: Yes. Well I started that way. I started acting back in 2008. There really wasn’t much work around trans characters. We weren’t as far along in understanding trans people in general. So, at that point in my life, I was living what we call “stealth” in the trans community — where you just really don’t disclose your trans history, your gender history to people. I compartmentalized my life, and certainly in the acting world, I didn’t disclose to anyone besides my agent about my gender history. So, I started auditioning for cisgender and non-trans roles and I lucked up on a guest spot on Law & Order, which was like my first big job, I guess. I did one other independent film that was like a 30-minute film that actually never got released because the producers found out about my gender history and they canned the film, and so we never got to see it. But it wasn’t the best quality anyway, so it’s okay. [Laughter] Then around the time I landed Law & Order, I had a really powerful conversation with my good, good friend Laverne Cox from Orange is the New Black, who I’ve known for over a decade. I saw her success walking in her truth and playing an out proud trans woman on TV in a trans role and just living her life and being transparent. It inspired me, and I knew that that’s the direction I had to go. I had this burning feeling inside of me to go that way and around that same time a woman by the name of Islan Nettles was beaten to death a block from my apartment in New York City. [She was] a trans woman of color. It just shook me to my

Nick Adams: I know that also your family is from Sri Lanka and you took your show and your artistry to Sri Lanka and India. What was that like, doing your trans artwork overseas?

A scene from Maya's wedding episode core and so I knew I wasn’t doing my trans brothers and sisters any justice by existing in the closet and not living as my full authentic self. So I made the decision to start auditioning for trans roles. Sense8 came along, Transparent came along. I landed a small recurring role on Transparent as Shea, the yoga teacher. I love it. It’s fulfilling to be able to play trans characters and that was my coming out party. [Laughter] But now the challenge for me as an actor and not a series regular on any particular show is to find stable, steady work and not only auditioning for trans roles but for cisgender, non-trans roles as well, and getting back to that. I think that’s the next frontier — when maybe we just let the audience decide. Why does the gender history always have to be specified and sensationalized? Maybe we can get to a point where trans actors can play a character and their gender history is more of an afterthought than the first thing that is disclosed. Nick Adams: D’Lo, transgender men are still not as commonly seen in the media. I’m glad Scott is on The Bold and the Beautiful, and Ian Harvey was in season one of Transparent in a couple of episodes. So from your perspective as a transgender actor and transgender man working in Hollywood, what do you hope to see in terms of more visibility for transgender men? I know that you also taken matters in your own hands of sort [by] creating your own stories, and shows, and theater work around your own experiences. D’Lo: As transgender people, we — queer and trans people — are creatives, are artists, are always creating with that different lens, and yet it’s only when the cis world co-ops our stuff that it gets blown up — thank you, Madonna. [Laughter] I knew I could always act, and I love performing, but understanding the Hollywood world and the industry, whether I was passing or not passing, I knew that I couldn’t sustain [myself] financially. You talked about stability, and that’s definitely on my mind. Is it that trans men get roles only when they are passing, when they look like what cisgender men are supposed to look like? What happens to the gender nonconforming trans community? I feel like as a trans masculine person, I too crave to see full stories fleshed out around trans masculinity. That’s something that privileged cisgender men don’t have to think about — how they want to walk with their masculinity or their man-ness. The same way that we’re talking about activism in Hollywood. I think that’s the same route that can be taken with sharing these stories. So I’m interested to see it, of course, I’m interested to play it, but really I think that there’s a dearth of trans masculine people in the media. INTERNATIONAL EMMY® 2015 -2016

D’Lo: Sometimes I feel like India is way ahead of the curve on trans stuff than the States, because they actually allow you to identify as trans on your passport. there’s a whole history of the Aravani or the Hijra community in South Asia. I got to go on a six-city tour throughout India with a stand-up storytelling show. When I went to Sri Lanka to visit some family, I had received a Ford Foundation travel grant to workshop with theater folk who were trans and queer. It’s incredible because they do look to America on some of the media stuff and around queer stuff and around activist stuff as well, or not America, maybe just the Western world, where there’s a lot more language. But one thing that is just amazing to me as a foreigner coming in is the amount of talent and the amount of creative outlets that I saw, especially in the south of India. They do have, I think, two trans people who are on news stations over there regularly. I often think about the privilege that we have in the States, how that resonates for trans people and trans artists internationally, and how they look to us to prove to networks or to prove to other creative people, “Look, we too want to do stuff and make a living.” Nick Adams: Karla, you recently accepted an award, in Monte Carlo, for The Bold and the Beautiful, and your speech there was very powerful. Have you gotten a sense of the international impact of The Bold and the Beautiful yet at this point?

I

t's amazing how awareness happens and how activism seeps into our daily lives and how life can imitate art.” — Karla Mosley Karla Mosley: So far it’s been overwhelmingly positive. It will be interesting to see as we get to some of the more conservative countries what the response is, but the way that it’s being structured is such a love story and even just in the States and in the more conservative areas where I saw resistance from the beginning, now people are rooting for them to be together. The resistance — so much of it was confusion. Like, what does this mean? So I made myself available to people as much as I could and tried to direct them, if I hadn’t had the experience, to someone who had. Or the internet is amazing for that. It is about just being known and hearing these stories, and beginning to know people because once we attach stories to humanity, then we can’t help but at least have some inkling, even if it’s in the back of our minds, behind all of our prejudice and preconceived notions, that there might be a different possibility.
