Bursting the Content Bubble
Peak TV had already peaked before the 11,000-plus members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike this month. With negotiations at a standstill, Hollywood—and the global content community—is bracing for a protracted shutdown.
The landscape is far different today than with the last writers’ strike; back in 2007, audiences didn’t have a vast assortment of SVOD and AVOD platforms alongside broadcast and cable networks to fill their entertainment needs. So it may be a while before viewers feel the pinch. According to Ampere Analysis, the U.S. will start to feel the impact of a “content deficit” later this year, as the effects of the strike collide with the overall slowdown in commissioning from platforms looking to best manage their budgets amid a challenging economic climate. Every challenge, of course, creates an opportunity. The 2007 writers’ strike in the U.S. helped lead to a renaissance in reality TV; unscripted producers are hoping for a similar impact this time around. And American audiences are far more open to international fare than they were back then, so distributors across the globe with compelling scripted series are likely to see a bump in their sales to the U.S. should the strike grind on. Meanwhile, Hol lywood is functioning as best as it can right now, with the studios and indies all gearing up to host buyers from across the globe this month. Fernando Szew of FOX Entertainment Global and Agapy Kapouranis of Lionsgate shared with us their plans for the L.A. Screenings this year. We also hear from several film distribution executives about trends in that market in time for the Cannes Film Festival.

Buyers from across the globe are heading back to the FOX lot as FOX Entertainment Global hosts its first-ever L.A. Screenings event. The new unit of FOX Entertainment was unveiled following its acquisition of MarVista Entertainment, marking the company’s return to the international distribution business. Led by MarVista founder Fernando Szew as CEO, FOX Entertainment Global will be showcasing to the assembled buyers a slate of comedies and TV movies while also reminding its clients that as an independent operator that doesn’t have an SVOD service to prioritize, it is open for partnerships across the globe. Szew talks to World Screen about FOX Entertainment Global’s positioning in the landscape today.
Fernando Szew FOX Entertainment Global
By Mansha Daswani
WS: Why was the sale of MarVista Entertainment to FOX Entertainment important for you and the company?
SZEW: It was the right moment for the evolution of MarVista. We found a great platform for us to catapult our further growth. I’m incredibly proud of the business we built at MarVista, how we completed the transaction and who we were able to complete the transaction with. Now that we are 18 months into it, I’m
20 WORLD SCREEN 5/23
most proud of how well we’ve integrated into the FOX ecosystem. It was a transaction that allowed me, as the principal of MarVista, to bring along every single team member and, from there, create further opportunities for our growth as a business unit with in FOX Entertainment and widen the lens and the tent. It’s been an incredible journey. Businesses evolve. MarVista was an independent that started with no capital and was able to find a strong niche in the marketplace and stay relevant and profitable for
close to 20 years, pivoting along the way but always staying true to our core values and our essence of how I formed it with my partners at the time and then as I took the sole leadership role myself.
WS: Tell us about how you’re positioning the company as a partner to platforms, broadcasters and producers across the globe.
SZEW: One of the key things about being a part of FOX is that we are strong yet independent, and we’re not beholden to the paywalls and the streaming strategies of the competitive landscape [that existed] when we launched at MIPCOM. Some things have shifted in the past six-plus months, but the thesis continues to be that we need partnerships. We need to be able to collaborate with others because we cannot be fully vertically integrated into
5/23 WORLD SCREEN 21
“There’s a lot that we bring to the table to help the puzzle of content creation and distribution.”
every thing that we do. We come to the table with great value propositions, whether on the unscripted side, the scripted side, the animation side, on AVOD with Tubi, and the production capabilities of MarVista and the cost-effectiveness. There’s quite a lot that we bring to the table to help the puzzle of content creation and distribution. As we’re building more and more muscles here, we need to be able to amplify what we do in partnership with others. By definition, that’s the open arms that we talked about. We’re not just out there selling; we’re not just pushing our content. We are looking to collaborate. Yes, we will trade, but we’re also looking at what’s incoming from different pockets. Michael Thorn [president of scripted programming at FOX Entertainment] recently announced the pickup of Doc, which is based on an Italian format. Similarly, the work that Allison Wallach [president of unscripted programming] does at FOX Alternative Entertainment is hugely collaborative and global in scope. We talk about those things when we say we have open arms and embrace collaboration.
WS: Talk about the evolution of the TV movie market. In recent years you’ve referred to these as “made-for-platform” films rather

than TV movies. How is the demand for these titles, which you had much success with at MarVista, today?
SZEW: We talked about the staying power and the relevance of MarVista. As we looked ahead, it was clear that FOX, with what they were building, including with Tubi, was a great strategic partner for our production capabilities and growth. It is clearer than ever that those easy-to-watch, easy-to-schedule, easy-topop-in, easy-to-have new originals—creating and curating new talent and existing talent—would be in high demand. We hyperfocused our capabilities on that early on, which is why we shifted away from the made-for-television movie. We stopped calling them that years ago. They weren’t made-for-television movies. People still call them movies of the week in some corners. Funnily enough, that kind of terminology might come back because of the way that they’re being premiered on some platforms, which is a premiere a week. But it’s very different from the monikers of the past when it was a network type of movie of the week or when TV movies were more meant for what ended up happening in the cable landscape. We knew the distribution platform was rapidly shifting, and we developed a wonderful relationship with the biggest AVOD platform in North America, Tubi.
5/23 WORLD SCREEN 23
FOX’s Grimsburg has landed a second season renewal.
WS: What have you learned from that relationship about the AVOD and FAST markets?
SZEW: We’re still learning. The projections of what we can learn are incredible when we have real-time data on how things are consumed, what the audience looks like and what piques the audience’s interest when they come in and out of content. I think it will help shape the evolution of what MarVista has been known for, which is to custom-make the content for the audience. We’re getting closer to a B2C type of model. Those learnings will be great because you can further super-serve audiences. We can also experiment and iterate because you’re not beholden to a time slot or a strong and narrow brand dynamic. That allows for creative freedom. It’s allowed us to be at the forefront of pushing the envelope in some of the stories that we’re telling and how we’re telling them, which is why MarVista has thrived. We’ve been progressive in finding new audiences and different types of representation in front and behind the camera.
WS: What are some of your highlights for the L.A. Screenings?
SZEW: With FOX Entertainment, we have the legacy of the wonderful history of animation that came out of this lot and the partnership with Bento Box. We’re highlighting Krapopolis and
24 WORLD SCREEN 5/23

Grimsburg. Animal Control has been very successful here on the network. We will continue to talk about the success of that show at the L.A. Screenings. We have a vast array of movies coming from the MarVista content pipeline for external parties and Tubi. They’re not all cut from the same cloth as others in the “TV movie” marketplace. We still love our partners at Hallmark and Lifetime, but this is no longer just holiday movies that look like this or thrillers that look like this. The aperture of creativity has opened up, and our creative team is at the forefront of that.
WS: What are you focusing on as you navigate the company through an uncertain landscape?
SZEW: The culture of MarVista, which we’re very much transferring and translating into FOX Entertainment Global, has always been one of adaptability. Change is inevitable, and there is always uncertainty. The whole world learned that lesson because of the pandemic. We all were able to adapt. It does not make it less scary, but at least once you have those muscles organizationally, you resort back to them. Discipline was inherent in the modeling and launching of FOX Entertainment Global. We wanted to make sure that we were doing something adaptable, disciplined and with all the growth potential possible.

Agapy Kapouranis Lionsgate
As president of international television and digital distribution at Lionsgate, Agapy
Kapouranis has structured a broad range of complex global and regional licensing deals with digital and linear platforms around the world. She tells World Screen about the bespoke approach to taking Lionsgate’s programming across the globe.
By Kristin Brzoznowski
WS: What’s driving Lionsgate’s strategy for 2023?
KAPOURANIS: Lionsgate is one of the leading third-party suppliers of premium scripted series in the world, and we are agnostic to platform, so we don’t take a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Our entrepreneurial nature enables us to be flexible and pivot when challenges arise.
This year, we will focus on continuing to open up new markets with existing platforms and those new to the international space. We closed a deal with Paramount+ for the streamer to acquire several of our shows, such as hit comedies Home Economics and Son of a Critch, for audiences in the U.K. and Ireland, and we will continue to create similar opportunities.
26 WORLD SCREEN 5/23
In addition, Lionsgate has become one of the few studios with series on every one of the main free-TV broadcasters in the U.K., placing the Emmy Award-winning series Ramy on Channel 4, the hit anthology series Love Life on BBC and more. We are now replicating this successful strategy across other European markets, including France and Germany.
WS: What are buyers looking for?
KAPOURANIS: Buyers are always looking for premium content driven by strong storylines and acclaimed casts. We offer a diverse slate that includes some of our newer series, such as the CIA thriller Gray, starring Patricia Clarkson, and top films from our library, including The Hunger Games franchise.
We licensed a large package of premium films and series to support the European relaunch of MGM+, reaffirming the value of our content for buyers throughout the ecosystem. This deal made MGM+ the new home of Lionsgate and STARZ’s most popular series in key European countries, including the Power franchise, Mad Men, Nashville and Black Mafia Family, and hit movies ranging from Reservoir Dogs and Halloween to the John Wick franchises, Twilight and beyond. We are also now selling Power Book II: Ghost in Scandinavia and Japan and The Great in France.

Mansha Daswani checks in with three leading executives about trends they’re watching in the film distribution business.
Just as the cable TV market proved to be a valuable window for rights owners with significant film libraries, streaming has ushered in a wealth of new opportunities for distributors of big-budget theatrical titles, straight-to-digital indie releases, traditional TV movies and everything in between. The resurgence of ad-based models and rapid proliferation of FAST channels have amplified the number of possible homes for a project, leaving boutique distributors serving the feature film and TV movie
Cinevest Interactive’s Takers.

mar kets with plenty of optimism, despite the macroeconomic concerns plaguing the media industry at large.
“The demand for quality content never slows down,” observes Vanessa Shapiro, CEO of Nicely Entertainment. “What varies year to year in terms of market climate are price points and windowing expectations. Although it can be a bit hard to forecast in constantly changing environments, that makes our industry fun and allows smaller boutique distributors like Nicely to thrive. We can produce content very efficiently and have been able to provide great titles on tight turnarounds. As we remain nimble, we can pivot quickly when opportunities pop up or new rights categories take hold.”
Acknowledging the “belt-tightening” happening at the streamers amid strategy course corrections and slowing subscriber gains, Shapiro believes Nicely is well-positioned in a challenging landscape with its “quite reliable and low-risk” lineup. “We speak to a core need in the market: modestly budgeted genre films,” Shapiro says. “Our titles organically target female audiences and are very co-viewer friendly, making them perfect for advertisers, streamers and traditional broadcast outlets.”
The co-viewing-friendly TV movie market is one that Artist View Enter tainment is also active in, co-producing six a year that fall into the always popular female thriller and rom-com categories. But a widening pool of clients has also meant that Artist View has been able to expand its offerings with more eclectic fare. Scott J. Jones, the company’s president, cites Para dise as an example, calling it “one of the most unique projects that Artist
Romance at the Vineyard is a new rom-com available from Nicely Entertainment.
5/23 WORLD SCREEN 39
View has rep resented. This musical offers outstanding vocal performances and a fun storyline that crosses religion with a whole lot of laughter.”
Amid a crowded and fragmented landscape, Jones high lights the importance of finding “projects that offer a unique marketing hook.” And discovering those compelling, breakout properties has not become any easier.
“The challenge for independent distributors is to find quality TV movies and libraries because producers are going directly to the leading streaming platforms,” says Arthur Schweitzer, CEO and president of Cinevest Interactive. “We were happy to pick up titles licensed in North America and a few major territories because we could serve them to cable and regional streaming services in smaller territories. Those opportunities are drying up as streamers increase their global footprints worldwide.”
Schweitzer adds that one area of focus for him currently is acquiring a strong library that could be used for a FAST channel in the future. “AVOD and SVOD are providing a growing revenue source for TV movies in the stream ing-dominated marketplace,” he explains.
And AVOD operators are turning to easy-to-produce, limited-budget movies to ramp up their original content aspirations. “At Nicely, we’re already having conversations with major entities about how to utilize cozy TV movies as a method of brand exposure,” Nicely’s Shapiro notes. “We’re excited about the growth of ad-based models, especially as the major U.S. AVOD companies continue their international expansion. AVOD has been a massive growth vehicle in the U.S.; although price points are lower in Europe and elsewhere, the numbers will calibrate, and it will be a major payday.”
