1. About World Summit Award Mobile The World Summit Award (WSA) was initiated by Austria in 2003 in the framework of the United Nations’ World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and is organised by a global partner network, coordinated by the International Center for New Media. WSA partners come from governments, private sector and civil society in over 160 UN member states. WSA implements the UN agenda for the development of the Information Society and supports specifically the UN Millennium Development Goals of ending poverty, hunger and disease, providing education for all, saving the environment and giving a fair share to women through the use of ICTs.

NEW TIMES – NEW CHALLENGES! THE START OF WSA-MOBILE IN 2010 New times bring new challenges. It is a well known fact that today, in terms of access, mobile usage has outgrown Internet usage by threefold with more than 6+ billion connections registered around the world to date. Mobile phones are becoming smarter, while touch screens are revolutionizing what can be done with them. They are undoubtedly becoming more intimate and most used by all age groups across their life span. We can do more and more in using mobile phones with many essential tasks becoming unthinkable without them. We have entered the age of mobile applications and mobile content.

The challenge

• Mobile usage has outgrown three time Internet usage in terms of access • More than 6 Billion connections are registered around the world • Mobile phones are turning smarter and smarter and touch screens revolutionize the devices

• The mobile phone is the most intimate and most used device in the life of all who have one

• We live in the age of mobile applications and content! The Questions

• Which m-contents are the best, which mobile apps deliver the most value? • Which apps and contents are outstanding for specific usages? • What is there in terms of richness and diversity beyond SMS, games and pics? • Which apps and contents are closing digital divides and information gaps?

3.1. United Nations Partner Network Between 2011 and 2014 WSA-mobile started strategic Partnerships with the following Institutions/Organisations

Throughout the world today, mobile technologies are becoming a key channel through which we connect, inform and make the decisions that shape our future. In Africa and elsewhere they bring the power of the Internet right into the hands of the people, bossting business and entrepre neurship. UNIDO welcomes and supports the efforts of the WSA-mobile and its events in Abu Dhabi. H.E. Kandeh K. Yumkella, DG UNIDO

Mobile technology has helped to create new links among people and it has enhanced opportunities for marginalized groups to participate in social, political and economic life. It has also facilitated the creation and dissemination of knowledge across borders. For all these reasons, mobile technology is one of our most powerful assets to build inclusive knowledge societies. For this, we need more than technology. We must produce and share relevant quality content to create the conditions for a truly inclusive dialogue among all people and cultures. This is why UNESCO is working to harness the power of mobile technology to fulfill the promises of quality education for all, to deepen mutual understanding and to empower people. The WSA Mobile Congress in Abu Dhabi is a unique opportunity to promote excellence in mobile content, and UNESCO is proud to contribute to this global effort. H.E. Irina Bokova, Director-General UNESCO

3.1. United Nations Partner Network

Established in the framework of the World Summit on the Information Society, The World Summit Award (WSA) has been selecting and promoting the world’s best e- Content and most innovative ICT applications, created by young people. Partnering with governments, private sector and civil society in over 160 UN member states, the WSA supports the implementation of the UN Agenda for Development of the Information Society and the Millennium Development Goals of ending poverty, hunger and disease, providing education for all, saving the environment and giving a fair share to women through the use of ICTs. Using a unique mechanism of a global contest supported by national selections of best practice and a sequence of content-focused national and international events, content conferences and promotional exhibitions, the WSA offers a worldwide platform for all who value the creative use of ICTs and who are committed to making today’s information society more inclusive. Responding to rapid changes in the information society, the new WSA-mobile initiative emphasizes cultural diversity and identity, the creation of varied information content and the digitalization of educational, scientific and cultural heritage. It aims to make the benefits of the new Information Society accessible and meaningful for all. I wish the WSA-mobile Global Conferences in Abu Dhabi success. H.E. Thomas Stelzer, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs, Department of Economic and Social Affairs

World Summit Awards (WSA) has, throughout the years, directed its focus on global efforts to support and develop high-quality e– and m-Content and innovative ICT applications, thus demonstrating what people in developing countries can do to meet their own needs. By selecting, presenting and promoting the best products from all over the world in that field, it encourages, harnesses and channels youth energy and abilities and makes a contribution to narrowing the Content Gap. Rich and relevant e– and m-content is what drives the development of a meaningful information society, as access expands, efforts must be redoubled to foster local content and application. The strong partnership WSA developed with the Global Alliance for ICT and Development (GAID) has developed a solid platform and a one of a kind award showcase, that has become a vehicle that effectively advocates for the use of ICT in all areas of social and economic development. Daniel Stauffacher, Chairman UN GAID
